Chapter 2

Phonetic (Hebrew): bּashshּebiy'i֕y bּe'eshseri֥ym ve'echa֖d lacho֑deshsh hayah֙ dּebar-yehva֔h bּeyad-chagּa֥y hanּabi֖y le'moֽr׃

Edified Edition (EDE)In the seventh month, in the one and twentieth day of the month, came the word of the LORD by the prophet Haggai, saying,

בַּשְּׁבִיעִ֕י בְּעֶשְׂרִ֥ים וְאֶחָ֖ד לַחֹ֑דֶשׁ הָיָה֙ דְּבַר־יְהוָ֔ה בְּיַד־חַגַּ֥י הַנָּבִ֖יא לֵאמֹֽר׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): emar-na֗ 'el-zerubּabe֤l bּen-shshaletּiy'el֙ pּacha֣t yehuda֔h ve'el-yehoshshu֥'a bּen-yehotzada֖q hakּohe֣n hagּad֑ol ve'el-shshe'eri֥yt ha'a֖m le'moֽr׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"Speak now to Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest, and to the residue of the people, saying,"

אֱמָר־נָ֗א אֶל־זְרֻבָּבֶ֤ל בֶּן־שַׁלְתִּיאֵל֙ פַּחַ֣ת יְהוּדָ֔ה וְאֶל־יְהוֹשֻׁ֥עַ בֶּן־יְהוֹצָדָ֖ק הַכֹּהֵ֣ן הַגָּד֑וֹל וְאֶל־שְׁאֵרִ֥ית הָעָ֖ם לֵאמֹֽר׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): mi֤y bakem֙ hanּishshe'a֔r 'ashshe֤r ra'ah֙ 'et-habּa֣yit hazּe֔h bּikebod֖o hari'shsh֑on uma֨h 'atּe֜m ro'i֤ym 'oto֙ 'a֔tּah hal֥o kamo֛hu kּe'a֖yin bּe'eyneykeֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"Who is left among you that saw this house in her first glory? and how do you see it now? is it not in your eyes in comparison of it as nothing?"

מִ֤י בָכֶם֙ הַנִּשְׁאָ֔ר אֲשֶׁ֤ר רָאָה֙ אֶת־הַבַּ֣יִת הַזֶּ֔ה בִּכְבוֹד֖וֹ הָרִאשׁ֑וֹן וּמָ֨ה אַתֶּ֜ם רֹאִ֤ים אֹתוֹ֙ עַ֔תָּה הֲל֥וֹא כָמֹ֛הוּ כְּאַ֖יִן בְּעֵינֵיכֶֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'atּa֣h chaza֣q zerubּabe֣l ׀ ne'um-yehva֡h vachaza֣q yehoshshu֣'a bּen-yehotzadaq֩ hakּohe֨n hagּad֜ol vachaza֨q kּal-'a֥m ha'a֛retz ne'um-yehva֖h vaֽ'ashs֑u kּiֽy-'ani֣y 'itּeke֔m ne'u֖m yehva֥h tzeba'ֽot׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"Yet now be strong, O Zerubbabel," says the LORD; "and be strong, O Joshua, son of Josedech, the high priest; and be strong, all you people of the land," says the LORD, "and work: for I am with you, says the LORD of hosts:"

וְעַתָּ֣ה חֲזַ֣ק זְרֻבָּבֶ֣ל ׀ נְאֻם־יְהוָ֡ה וַחֲזַ֣ק יְהוֹשֻׁ֣עַ בֶּן־יְהוֹצָדָק֩ הַכֹּהֵ֨ן הַגָּד֜וֹל וַחֲזַ֨ק כָּל־עַ֥ם הָאָ֛רֶץ נְאֻם־יְהוָ֖ה וַֽעֲשׂ֑וּ כִּֽי־אֲנִ֣י אִתְּכֶ֔ם נְאֻ֖ם יְהוָ֥ה צְבָאֽוֹת׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): eֽt-hadּaba֞r 'ashsher-kּara֤tּiy 'itּekem֙ bּetze'teke֣m mimּitzera֔yim veruchi֖y 'ome֣det bּetokeke֑m 'al-tּiyraֽ'u׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)"According to the word that I covenanted with you when you came out of Egypt, so My spirit remains among you: fear you not."

אֶֽת־הַדָּבָ֞ר אֲשֶׁר־כָּרַ֤תִּי אִתְּכֶם֙ בְּצֵאתְכֶ֣ם מִמִּצְרַ֔יִם וְרוּחִ֖י עֹמֶ֣דֶת בְּתוֹכְכֶ֑ם אַל־תִּירָֽאוּ׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): kּi֣y ko֤h 'amar֙ yehva֣h tzeba'֔ot '֥od 'acha֖t me'a֣t hi֑y va'ani֗y mare'iyshsh֙ 'et-hashshּama֣yim ve'et-ha'a֔retz ve'et-hayּa֖m ve'et-hecharabaֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)For thus says the LORD of hosts; "Yet once, it is a little while, and I will shake the heavens, and the earth, and the sea, and the dry land;"

כִּ֣י כֹ֤ה אָמַר֙ יְהוָ֣ה צְבָא֔וֹת ע֥וֹד אַחַ֖ת מְעַ֣ט הִ֑יא וַאֲנִ֗י מַרְעִישׁ֙ אֶת־הַשָּׁמַ֣יִם וְאֶת־הָאָ֔רֶץ וְאֶת־הַיָּ֖ם וְאֶת־הֶחָרָבָֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vehire'ashshetּiy֙ 'et-kּal-hagּoyi֔m uba֖'u chemedּa֣t kּal-hagּoyi֑m umilּe'ti֞y 'et-habּa֤yit hazּeh֙ kּab֔od 'ama֖r yehva֥h tzeba'ֽot׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"And I will shake all nations, and the [1] desire of all nations shall come: and I will fill this house with glory," says the LORD of hosts.

וְהִרְעַשְׁתִּי֙ אֶת־כָּל־הַגּוֹיִ֔ם וּבָ֖אוּ חֶמְדַּ֣ת כָּל־הַגּוֹיִ֑ם וּמִלֵּאתִ֞י אֶת־הַבַּ֤יִת הַזֶּה֙ כָּב֔וֹד אָמַ֖ר יְהוָ֥ה צְבָאֽוֹת׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): li֥y hakּe֖sep veli֣y hazּaha֑b ne'u֖m yehva֥h tzeba'ֽot׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"The silver is Mine, and the gold is Mine," says the LORD of hosts.

לִ֥י הַכֶּ֖סֶף וְלִ֣י הַזָּהָ֑ב נְאֻ֖ם יְהוָ֥ה צְבָאֽוֹת׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): gּad֣ol yiֽheye֡h kּebod֩ habּa֨yit hazּe֤h ha'aֽcharon֙ min-ha֣ri'shsh֔on 'ama֖r yehva֣h tzeba'֑ot ubamּaq֤om hazּeh֙ 'etּe֣n shshal֔om ne'u֖m yehva֥h tzeba'ֽot׃p

Edified Edition (EDE)"The glory of this latter house shall be greater than of the former," says the LORD of hosts: "and in this place will I give peace," says the LORD of hosts.

גָּד֣וֹל יִֽהְיֶ֡ה כְּבוֹד֩ הַבַּ֨יִת הַזֶּ֤ה הָאַֽחֲרוֹן֙ מִן־הָ֣רִאשׁ֔וֹן אָמַ֖ר יְהוָ֣ה צְבָא֑וֹת וּבַמָּק֤וֹם הַזֶּה֙ אֶתֵּ֣ן שָׁל֔וֹם נְאֻ֖ם יְהוָ֥ה צְבָאֽוֹת׃פ

Phonetic (Hebrew): bּe'eshseri֤ym ve'arebּa'ah֙ latּeshshiy'i֔y bּishshena֥t shshetּa֖yim ledareya֑veshsh hayah֙ dּebar-yehva֔h 'el-chagּa֥y hanּabi֖y le'moֽr׃

Edified Edition (EDE)In the four and twentieth day of the ninth month, in the second year of Darius, came the word of the LORD by Haggai the prophet, saying,

בְּעֶשְׂרִ֤ים וְאַרְבָּעָה֙ לַתְּשִׁיעִ֔י בִּשְׁנַ֥ת שְׁתַּ֖יִם לְדָרְיָ֑וֶשׁ הָיָה֙ דְּבַר־יְהוָ֔ה אֶל־חַגַּ֥י הַנָּבִ֖יא לֵאמֹֽר׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): kּo֥h 'ama֖r yehva֣h tzeba'֑ot shshe'al-na֧ 'et-hakּohani֛ym tּora֖h le'moֽr׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Thus says the LORD of hosts; "Ask now the priests concerning the law, saying,"

כֹּ֥ה אָמַ֖ר יְהוָ֣ה צְבָא֑וֹת שְׁאַל־נָ֧א אֶת־הַכֹּהֲנִ֛ים תּוֹרָ֖ה לֵאמֹֽר׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): he֣n ׀ yishsּa'-'i֨yshsh bּeshsar-qo֜deshsh bּikena֣p bּiged֗o venaga֣ bּi֠kenapo 'el-halּe֨chem ve'el-hanּazi֜yd ve'el-hayּa֧yin ve'el-shshe֛men ve'el-kּal-ma'aka֖l hayiqedּa֑shsh vayּa'an֧u hakּohani֛ym vayּo'mer֖u loֽ'׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"If one bear holy flesh in the skirt of his garment, and with his skirt do touch bread, or pottage, or wine, or oil, or any meat, shall it be holy?" And the priests answered and said, "No."

הֵ֣ן ׀ יִשָּׂא־אִ֨ישׁ בְּשַׂר־קֹ֜דֶשׁ בִּכְנַ֣ף בִּגְד֗וֹ וְנָגַ֣ע בִּ֠כְנָפוֹ אֶל־הַלֶּ֨חֶם וְאֶל־הַנָּזִ֜יד וְאֶל־הַיַּ֧יִן וְאֶל־שֶׁ֛מֶן וְאֶל־כָּל־מַאֲכָ֖ל הֲיִקְדָּ֑שׁ וַיַּעֲנ֧וּ הַכֹּהֲנִ֛ים וַיֹּאמְר֖וּ לֹֽא׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֣'mer chagּa֔y 'im-yigּa֧ teme'-ne֛peshsh bּekal-'e֖lּeh hayitema֑ vayּa'an֧u hakּohani֛ym vayּo'mer֖u yitemaֽ'׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Then said Haggai, "If one that is unclean by a dead body touch any of these, shall it be unclean?" And the priests answered and said, "It shall be unclean."

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר חַגַּ֔י אִם־יִגַּ֧ע טְמֵא־נֶ֛פֶשׁ בְּכָל־אֵ֖לֶּה הֲיִטְמָ֑א וַיַּעֲנ֧וּ הַכֹּהֲנִ֛ים וַיֹּאמְר֖וּ יִטְמָֽא׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֨'an chagּa֜y vayּo֗'mer kּe֣n haֽ'am-ha֠zּeh veken-hagּ֨oy hazּe֤h lepanay֙ ne'um-yehva֔h veke֖n kּal-ma'ashse֣h yedeyhe֑m va'ashshe֥r yaqeri֛ybu shsha֖m tame֥ hֽu'׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Then answered Haggai, and said, "So is this people, and so is this nation before Me," says the LORD; "and so is every work of their hands; and that which they offer there is unclean."

וַיַּ֨עַן חַגַּ֜י וַיֹּ֗אמֶר כֵּ֣ן הָֽעָם־הַ֠זֶּה וְכֵן־הַגּ֨וֹי הַזֶּ֤ה לְפָנַי֙ נְאֻם־יְהוָ֔ה וְכֵ֖ן כָּל־מַעֲשֵׂ֣ה יְדֵיהֶ֑ם וַאֲשֶׁ֥ר יַקְרִ֛יבוּ שָׁ֖ם טָמֵ֥א הֽוּא׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'atּah֙ shsiֽymu-na֣ lebabeke֔m min-hayּ֥om hazּe֖h vama֑'elah mitּe֧rem shsֽum-'e֛ben 'el-'e֖ben bּeheyka֥l yehvaֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)And now, I pray you, consider from this day and upward, from before a stone was laid upon a stone in the temple of the LORD:

וְעַתָּה֙ שִֽׂימוּ־נָ֣א לְבַבְכֶ֔ם מִן־הַיּ֥וֹם הַזֶּ֖ה וָמָ֑עְלָה מִטֶּ֧רֶם שֽׂוּם־אֶ֛בֶן אֶל־אֶ֖בֶן בְּהֵיכַ֥ל יְהוָֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): miֽheyota֥m bּa'֙ 'el-'arema֣t 'eshseri֔ym vehayeta֖h 'ashsara֑h bּa֣ 'el-hayּe֗qeb lacheshsop֙ chamishshּi֣ym pּura֔h vehayeta֖h 'eshseriֽym׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Since those days were, when one came to an heap of twenty measures, there were but ten: when one came to the pressfat for to draw out fifty vessels out of the press, there were but twenty.

מִֽהְיוֹתָ֥ם בָּא֙ אֶל־עֲרֵמַ֣ת עֶשְׂרִ֔ים וְהָיְתָ֖ה עֲשָׂרָ֑ה בָּ֣א אֶל־הַיֶּ֗קֶב לַחְשֹׂף֙ חֲמִשִּׁ֣ים פּוּרָ֔ה וְהָיְתָ֖ה עֶשְׂרִֽים׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): hikּe֨ytiy 'eteke֜m bּashshּidּap֤on ubayּeֽraqon֙ ubabּara֔d 'e֖t kּal-ma'ashse֣h yedeyke֑m ve'eyn-'eteke֥m 'ela֖y ne'um-yehvaֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)I smote you with blasting and with mildew and with hail in all the labours of your hands; yet you turned not to Me, says the LORD.

הִכֵּ֨יתִי אֶתְכֶ֜ם בַּשִּׁדָּפ֤וֹן וּבַיֵּֽרָקוֹן֙ וּבַבָּרָ֔ד אֵ֖ת כָּל־מַעֲשֵׂ֣ה יְדֵיכֶ֑ם וְאֵין־אֶתְכֶ֥ם אֵלַ֖י נְאֻם־יְהוָֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): shsiymu-na֣ lebabeke֔m min-hayּ֥om hazּe֖h vama֑'elah miyּom֩ 'eshseri֨ym ve'arebּa'a֜h latּeshshiy'i֗y lemin-hayּ֛om 'ashsher-yusּa֥d heֽykal-yehva֖h shsi֥ymu lebabekeֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Consider now from this day and upward, from the four and twentieth day of the ninth month, even from the day that the foundation of the LORD'S temple was laid, consider it.

שִׂימוּ־נָ֣א לְבַבְכֶ֔ם מִן־הַיּ֥וֹם הַזֶּ֖ה וָמָ֑עְלָה מִיּוֹם֩ עֶשְׂרִ֨ים וְאַרְבָּעָ֜ה לַתְּשִׁיעִ֗י לְמִן־הַיּ֛וֹם אֲשֶׁר־יֻסַּ֥ד הֵֽיכַל־יְהוָ֖ה שִׂ֥ימוּ לְבַבְכֶֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ha'֤od hazּe֨ra'֙ bּamּegura֔h ve'ad-hagּe֨pen vehatּe'ena֧h veharimּ֛on ve'e֥tz hazּa֖yit lo֣ nashsa֑ min-hayּ֥om hazּe֖h 'abareֽke׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)Is the seed yet in the barn? yes, as yet the vine, and the fig tree, and the pomegranate, and the olive tree, has not brought forth: from this day will I bless you.

הַע֤וֹד הַזֶּ֨רַע֙ בַּמְּגוּרָ֔ה וְעַד־הַגֶּ֨פֶן וְהַתְּאֵנָ֧ה וְהָרִמּ֛וֹן וְעֵ֥ץ הַזַּ֖יִת לֹ֣א נָשָׂ֑א מִן־הַיּ֥וֹם הַזֶּ֖ה אֲבָרֵֽךְ׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehi֨y debar-yehva֤h ׀ shsheniyt֙ 'el-chagּa֔y bּe'eshseri֧ym ve'arebּa'a֛h lacho֖deshsh le'moֽr׃

Edified Edition (EDE)And again the word of the LORD came to Haggai in the four and twentieth day of the month, saying,

וַיְהִ֨י דְבַר־יְהוָ֤ה ׀ שֵׁנִית֙ אֶל־חַגַּ֔י בְּעֶשְׂרִ֧ים וְאַרְבָּעָ֛ה לַחֹ֖דֶשׁ לֵאמֹֽר׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): emo֕r 'el-zerubּabe֥l pּaֽchat-yehuda֖h le'mo֑r 'ani֣y mare'i֔yshsh 'et-hashshּama֖yim ve'et-ha'aֽretz׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Speak to Zerubbabel, governor of Judah, saying, "I will shake the heavens and the earth;"

אֱמֹ֕ר אֶל־זְרֻבָּבֶ֥ל פַּֽחַת־יְהוּדָ֖ה לֵאמֹ֑ר אֲנִ֣י מַרְעִ֔ישׁ אֶת־הַשָּׁמַ֖יִם וְאֶת־הָאָֽרֶץ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vehaֽpaketּiy֙ kּisּe֣ mamelak֔ot vehi֨shshemadetּi֔y cho֖zeq mamelek֣ot hagּoyi֑m vehapaketּi֤y merekּabah֙ vero֣kebe֔yha veyared֤u susiym֙ vero֣kebeyhe֔m 'i֖yshsh bּeche֥reb 'achiֽyv׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"And I will overthrow the throne of kingdoms, and I will destroy the strength of the kingdoms of the heathen; and I will overthrow the chariots, and those that ride in them; and the horses and their riders shall come down, every one by the sword of his brother."

וְהָֽפַכְתִּי֙ כִּסֵּ֣א מַמְלָכ֔וֹת וְהִ֨שְׁמַדְתִּ֔י חֹ֖זֶק מַמְלְכ֣וֹת הַגּוֹיִ֑ם וְהָפַכְתִּ֤י מֶרְכָּבָה֙ וְרֹ֣כְבֶ֔יהָ וְיָרְד֤וּ סוּסִים֙ וְרֹ֣כְבֵיהֶ֔ם אִ֖ישׁ בְּחֶ֥רֶב אָחִֽיו׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): bּayּ֣om hah֣u ne'um-yehva֣h tzeba'֡ot 'e֠qּachaka zerubּabe֨l bּen-shshe'aletּiy'e֤l 'abedּiy֙ ne'um-yehva֔h veshsametּi֖yka kּaֽchota֑m kּiֽy-beka֣ bacha֔retּiy ne'u֖m yehva֥h tzeba'ֽot׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"In that day," says the LORD of hosts, "will I take you, O Zerubbabel, My servant, the son of Shealtiel," says the LORD, "and will make you as a signet: for I have chosen you," says the LORD of hosts.

בַּיּ֣וֹם הַה֣וּא נְאֻם־יְהוָ֣ה צְבָא֡וֹת אֶ֠קָּחֲךָ זְרֻבָּבֶ֨ל בֶּן־שְׁאַלְתִּיאֵ֤ל עַבְדִּי֙ נְאֻם־יְהוָ֔ה וְשַׂמְתִּ֖יךָ כַּֽחוֹתָ֑ם כִּֽי־בְךָ֣ בָחַ֔רְתִּי נְאֻ֖ם יְהוָ֥ה צְבָאֽוֹת׃
