Hosea

Chapter 4

Phonetic (Hebrew): shshime'֥u debar-yehva֖h bּene֣y yishsera'e֑l kּi֣y ri֤yb laֽyhvah֙ 'im-yoshshebe֣y ha'a֔retz kּi֠y 'eyn-'eme֧t veֽ'eyn-che֛sed ve'eֽyn-dּa֥'at 'elohi֖ym bּa'aֽretz׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Hear the word of the LORD, you children of Israel: for the LORD has a controversy with the inhabitants of the land, because there is no truth, nor mercy, nor knowledge of God in the land.

שִׁמְע֥וּ דְבַר־יְהוָ֖ה בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל כִּ֣י רִ֤יב לַֽיהוָה֙ עִם־יוֹשְׁבֵ֣י הָאָ֔רֶץ כִּ֠י אֵין־אֱמֶ֧ת וְֽאֵין־חֶ֛סֶד וְאֵֽין־דַּ֥עַת אֱלֹהִ֖ים בָּאָֽרֶץ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): alo֣h vekache֔shsh veratzo֥cha vegano֖b vena'o֑p pּara֕tzu vedami֥ym bּedami֖ym nagaֽ'u׃

Edified Edition (EDE)By swearing, and lying, and killing, and stealing, and committing adultery, they break out, and blood touches blood.

אָלֹ֣ה וְכַחֵ֔שׁ וְרָצֹ֥חַ וְגָנֹ֖ב וְנָאֹ֑ף פָּרָ֕צוּ וְדָמִ֥ים בְּדָמִ֖ים נָגָֽעוּ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): al-kּe֣n ׀ tּe'eba֣l ha'a֗retz ve'umelal֙ kּal-yoshshe֣b bּa֔hּ bּechayּa֥t hashsּade֖h ube'֣op hashshּama֑yim vegam-dּege֥y hayּa֖m ye'aseֽpu׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Therefore shall the land mourn, and every one that dwells therein shall languish, with the beasts of the field, and with the fowls of heaven; yes, the fishes of the sea also shall be taken away.

עַל־כֵּ֣ן ׀ תֶּאֱבַ֣ל הָאָ֗רֶץ וְאֻמְלַל֙ כָּל־יוֹשֵׁ֣ב בָּ֔הּ בְּחַיַּ֥ת הַשָּׂדֶ֖ה וּבְע֣וֹף הַשָּׁמָ֑יִם וְגַם־דְּגֵ֥י הַיָּ֖ם יֵאָסֵֽפוּ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): a֥ke 'i֛yshsh 'al-yare֖b ve'al-yoka֣ch 'i֑yshsh ve'amּeka֖ kּimeriybe֥y koheֽn׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Yet let no man strive, nor reprove another: for your people are as they that strive with the priest.

אַ֥ךְ אִ֛ישׁ אַל־יָרֵ֖ב וְאַל־יוֹכַ֣ח אִ֑ישׁ וְעַמְּךָ֖ כִּמְרִיבֵ֥י כֹהֵֽן׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vekashshaletּa֣ hayּ֔om vekashsha֧l gּam-nabi֛y 'imּeka֖ la֑yelah vedami֖ytiy 'imּeֽka׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Therefore shall you fall in the day, and the prophet also shall fall with you in the night, and I will destroy your mother.

וְכָשַׁלְתָּ֣ הַיּ֔וֹם וְכָשַׁ֧ל גַּם־נָבִ֛יא עִמְּךָ֖ לָ֑יְלָה וְדָמִ֖יתִי אִמֶּֽךָ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): nidem֥u 'amּi֖y mibּeli֣y hadּa֑'at kּiֽy-'atּa֞h hadּa֣'at ma'a֗setּa ve'eme'aֽse'ka֙ mikּahe֣n li֔y vatּishshekּach֙ tּora֣t 'elohe֔yka 'eshshekּa֥ch bּane֖yka gּam-'aֽniy׃

Edified Edition (EDE)My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because you hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject you, that you shall be no priest to Me: seeing you hast forgotten the law of your God, I will also forget your children.

נִדְמ֥וּ עַמִּ֖י מִבְּלִ֣י הַדָּ֑עַת כִּֽי־אַתָּ֞ה הַדַּ֣עַת מָאַ֗סְתָּ וְאֶמְאָֽסְאךָ֙ מִכַּהֵ֣ן לִ֔י וַתִּשְׁכַּח֙ תּוֹרַ֣ת אֱלֹהֶ֔יךָ אֶשְׁכַּ֥ח בָּנֶ֖יךָ גַּם־אָֽנִי׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): kּerubּa֖m kּe֣n chaֽte'u-li֑y kּeboda֖m bּeqal֥on 'amiֽyr׃

Edified Edition (EDE)As they were increased, so they sinned against Me: therefore will I change their glory into shame.

כְּרֻבָּ֖ם כֵּ֣ן חָֽטְאוּ־לִ֑י כְּבוֹדָ֖ם בְּקָל֥וֹן אָמִֽיר׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): chatּa֥'t 'amּi֖y yo'ke֑lu ve'el-'avona֖m yishse'֥u napeshshֽo׃

Edified Edition (EDE)They eat up the sin of My people, and they set their heart on their iniquity.

חַטַּ֥את עַמִּ֖י יֹאכֵ֑לוּ וְאֶל־עֲוֺנָ֖ם יִשְׂא֥וּ נַפְשֽׁוֹ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vehaya֥h ka'a֖m kּakּohe֑n upaqadetּi֤y 'alayv֙ dּeraka֔yv uma'alala֖yv 'ashshi֥yb lֽo׃

Edified Edition (EDE)And there shall be, like people, like priest: and I will punish them for their ways, and reward them their doings.

וְהָיָ֥ה כָעָ֖ם כַּכֹּהֵ֑ן וּפָקַדְתִּ֤י עָלָיו֙ דְּרָכָ֔יו וּמַעֲלָלָ֖יו אָשִׁ֥יב לֽוֹ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'aֽkelu֙ velo֣ yishsebּa֔'u hizen֖u velo֣ yipero֑tzu kּiֽy-'et-yehva֥h 'azeb֖u lishshemoֽr׃

Edified Edition (EDE)For they shall eat, and not have enough: they shall commit whoredom, and shall not increase: because they have left off to take heed to the LORD.

וְאָֽכְלוּ֙ וְלֹ֣א יִשְׂבָּ֔עוּ הִזְנ֖וּ וְלֹ֣א יִפְרֹ֑צוּ כִּֽי־אֶת־יְהוָ֥ה עָזְב֖וּ לִשְׁמֹֽר׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): zen֛ut veya֥yin vetiyr֖oshsh yiֽqּaֽch-leֽb׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Whoredom and wine and new wine take away the heart.

זְנ֛וּת וְיַ֥יִן וְתִיר֖וֹשׁ יִֽקַּֽח־לֵֽב׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): amּiy֙ bּe'etz֣o yishshe'a֔l umaqel֖o yagּi֣yd l֑o kּi֣y r֤ucha zenuniym֙ hite'a֔h vayּizen֖u mitּa֥chat 'eloheyheֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)My people ask counsel at their stocks, and their staff declares to them: for the spirit of whoredoms has caused them to err, and they have gone a whoring from under their God.

עַמִּי֙ בְּעֵצ֣וֹ יִשְׁאָ֔ל וּמַקְל֖וֹ יַגִּ֣יד ל֑וֹ כִּ֣י ר֤וּחַ זְנוּנִים֙ הִתְעָ֔ה וַיִּזְנ֖וּ מִתַּ֥חַת אֱלֹהֵיהֶֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): al-ra'shshe֨y hehari֜ym yezabּe֗chu ve'al-hagּeba'ot֙ yeqatּe֔ru tּa֣chat 'alּ֧on velibene֛h ve'ela֖h kּi֣y t֣ob tzilּa֑hּ 'al-kּe֗n tּizene֨ynah֙ bּen֣oteyke֔m vekalּoteyke֖m tּena'aֽpenah׃

Edified Edition (EDE)They sacrifice upon the tops of the mountains, and burn incense upon the hills, under oaks and poplars and elms, because the shadow thereof is good: therefore your daughters shall commit whoredom, and your spouses shall commit adultery.

עַל־רָאשֵׁ֨י הֶהָרִ֜ים יְזַבֵּ֗חוּ וְעַל־הַגְּבָעוֹת֙ יְקַטֵּ֔רוּ תַּ֣חַת אַלּ֧וֹן וְלִבְנֶ֛ה וְאֵלָ֖ה כִּ֣י ט֣וֹב צִלָּ֑הּ עַל־כֵּ֗ן תִּזְנֶ֨ינָה֙ בְּנ֣וֹתֵיכֶ֔ם וְכַלּוֹתֵיכֶ֖ם תְּנָאַֽפְנָה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): loֽ'-'epeq֨od 'al-bּenoteyke֜m kּi֣y tizene֗ynah ve'al-kּalּֽoteykem֙ kּi֣y tena'a֔penah kּiy-hem֙ 'im-hazּon֣ot yepare֔du ve'im-haqּedeshsh֖ot yezabּe֑chu ve'a֥m loֽ'-yabi֖yn yilּabeֽt׃

Edified Edition (EDE)I will not punish your daughters when they commit whoredom, nor your spouses when they commit adultery: for themselves are separated with whores, and they sacrifice with harlots: therefore the people that does not understand shall fall.

לֹֽא־אֶפְק֨וֹד עַל־בְּנוֹתֵיכֶ֜ם כִּ֣י תִזְנֶ֗ינָה וְעַל־כַּלּֽוֹתֵיכֶם֙ כִּ֣י תְנָאַ֔פְנָה כִּי־הֵם֙ עִם־הַזֹּנ֣וֹת יְפָרֵ֔דוּ וְעִם־הַקְּדֵשׁ֖וֹת יְזַבֵּ֑חוּ וְעָ֥ם לֹֽא־יָבִ֖ין יִלָּבֵֽט׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): im-zone֤h 'atּah֙ yishsera'e֔l 'al-ye'eshsha֖m yehuda֑h ve'al-tּabo֣'u hagּilegּa֗l ve'aֽl-tּa'alu֙ bּe֣yt 'a֔ven ve'al-tּishshּabe'֖u chay-yehvaֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Though you, Israel, play the harlot, yet let not Judah offend; and come not you to Gilgal, neither go you up to Bethaven, nor swear, 'The LORD lives.'

אִם־זֹנֶ֤ה אַתָּה֙ יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל אַל־יֶאְשַׁ֖ם יְהוּדָ֑ה וְאַל־תָּבֹ֣אוּ הַגִּלְגָּ֗ל וְאַֽל־תַּעֲלוּ֙ בֵּ֣ית אָ֔וֶן וְאַל־תִּשָּׁבְע֖וּ חַי־יְהוָֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): kּi֚y kּepara֣h soֽrera֔h sara֖r yishsera'e֑l 'atּah֙ yire'e֣m yehva֔h kּeke֖beshs bּamּerechaֽb׃

Edified Edition (EDE)For Israel slides back as a backsliding heifer: now the LORD will feed them as a lamb in a large place.

כִּ֚י כְּפָרָ֣ה סֹֽרֵרָ֔ה סָרַ֖ר יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל עַתָּה֙ יִרְעֵ֣ם יְהוָ֔ה כְּכֶ֖בֶשׂ בַּמֶּרְחָֽב׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): chab֧ur 'atzabּi֛ym 'epera֖yim haֽnּaֽch-lֽo׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Ephraim is joined to idols: let him alone.

חֲב֧וּר עֲצַבִּ֛ים אֶפְרָ֖יִם הַֽנַּֽח־לֽוֹ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): sa֖r sabe'a֑m hazene֣h hizen֔u 'ahab֥u heb֛u qal֖on maginּeֽyha׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Their drink is sour: they have committed whoredom continually: her rulers with shame do love, 'Give you.'

סָ֖ר סָבְאָ֑ם הַזְנֵ֣ה הִזְנ֔וּ אָהֲב֥וּ הֵב֛וּ קָל֖וֹן מָגִנֶּֽיהָ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): tzara֥r r֛ucha 'ota֖hּ bּikenape֑yha veyebo֖shshu mizּibechotaֽm s

Edified Edition (EDE)The wind has bound her up in her wings, and they shall be ashamed because of their sacrifices.

צָרַ֥ר ר֛וּחַ אוֹתָ֖הּ בִּכְנָפֶ֑יהָ וְיֵבֹ֖שׁוּ מִזִּבְחוֹתָֽם ס
