Chapter 3

Phonetic (Hebrew): kּiy֩ hinּe֨h ha'ad֜on yehva֣h tzeba'֗ot mesi֤yr miyrushshalai֨m֙ umi֣yhuda֔h mashshe'e֖n umashshe'ena֑h kּo֚l mishshe'an-le֔chem veko֖l mishshe'an-maֽyim׃

Edified Edition (EDE)For, behold, the Lord, the LORD of hosts, does take away from Jerusalem and from Judah the stay and the staff, the whole stay of bread, and the whole stay of water,

כִּי֩ הִנֵּ֨ה הָאָד֜וֹן יְהוָ֣ה צְבָא֗וֹת מֵסִ֤יר מִירוּשָׁלִַ֨ם֙ וּמִ֣יהוּדָ֔ה מַשְׁעֵ֖ן וּמַשְׁעֵנָ֑ה כֹּ֚ל מִשְׁעַן־לֶ֔חֶם וְכֹ֖ל מִשְׁעַן־מָֽיִם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): gּibּ֖or ve'i֣yshsh milechama֑h shshope֥t venabi֖y veqose֥m vezaqeֽn׃

Edified Edition (EDE)The mighty man, and the man of war, the judge, and the prophet, and the prudent, and the ancient,

גִּבּ֖וֹר וְאִ֣ישׁ מִלְחָמָ֑ה שׁוֹפֵ֥ט וְנָבִ֖יא וְקֹסֵ֥ם וְזָקֵֽן׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): shsar-chamishshּi֖ym uneshs֣u pani֑ym veyo'e֛tz vachaka֥m charashshi֖ym uneb֥on laֽchashsh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)The captain of fifty, and the honourable man, and the counsellor, and the cunning artificer, and the eloquent orator.

שַׂר־חֲמִשִּׁ֖ים וּנְשׂ֣וּא פָנִ֑ים וְיוֹעֵ֛ץ וַחֲכַ֥ם חֲרָשִׁ֖ים וּנְב֥וֹן לָֽחַשׁ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): venatatּi֥y ne'ari֖ym shsareyhe֑m veta'aluli֖ym yimeshshelu-baֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)And I will give children to be their princes, and babes shall rule over them.

וְנָתַתִּ֥י נְעָרִ֖ים שָׂרֵיהֶ֑ם וְתַעֲלוּלִ֖ים יִמְשְׁלוּ־בָֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): venigּa֣shs ha'a֔m 'i֥yshsh bּe'i֖yshsh ve'i֣yshsh bּere'e֑hu yirehab֗u hanּa֨'ar֙ bּazּaqe֔n vehanּiqele֖h bּanּikebּaֽd׃

Edified Edition (EDE)And the people shall be oppressed, every one by another, and every one by his neighbour: the child shall behave himself proudly against the ancient, and the base against the honourable.

וְנִגַּ֣שׂ הָעָ֔ם אִ֥ישׁ בְּאִ֖ישׁ וְאִ֣ישׁ בְּרֵעֵ֑הוּ יִרְהֲב֗וּ הַנַּ֨עַר֙ בַּזָּקֵ֔ן וְהַנִּקְלֶ֖ה בַּנִּכְבָּֽד׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): kּiֽy-yitepּo֨shs 'i֤yshsh bּe'achiyv֙ bּe֣yt 'abi֔yv shsimela֣h leka֔h qatzi֖yn tּiֽheyeh-lּa֑nu vehamּakeshshela֥h hazּo֖'t tּa֥chat yadeֽka׃

Edified Edition (EDE)When a man shall take hold of his brother of the house of his father, saying, "You have clothing, be you our ruler, and let this ruin be under your hand:"

כִּֽי־יִתְפֹּ֨שׂ אִ֤ישׁ בְּאָחִיו֙ בֵּ֣ית אָבִ֔יו שִׂמְלָ֣ה לְכָ֔ה קָצִ֖ין תִּֽהְיֶה־לָּ֑נוּ וְהַמַּכְשֵׁלָ֥ה הַזֹּ֖את תַּ֥חַת יָדֶֽךָ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): yishsּa'֩ bayּ֨om hah֤u ׀ le'mor֙ lo'-'eheye֣h chobe֔shsh ubebeyti֕y 'e֥yn le֖chem ve'e֣yn shsimela֑h lo֥ teshsiymu֖niy qetzi֥yn 'aֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)In that day shall he swear, saying, "I will not be an healer; for in my house is neither bread nor clothing: make me not a ruler of the people."

יִשָּׂא֩ בַיּ֨וֹם הַה֤וּא ׀ לֵאמֹר֙ לֹא־אֶהְיֶ֣ה חֹבֵ֔שׁ וּבְבֵיתִ֕י אֵ֥ין לֶ֖חֶם וְאֵ֣ין שִׂמְלָ֑ה לֹ֥א תְשִׂימֻ֖נִי קְצִ֥ין עָֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): kּi֤y kashshelah֙ yer֣ushshalai֔m viyhuda֖h napa֑l kּiֽy-leshshona֤m umaֽ'aleleyhem֙ 'el-yehva֔h lamer֖ot 'ene֥y kebodֽo׃

Edified Edition (EDE)For Jerusalem is ruined, and Judah is fallen: because their tongue and their doings are against the LORD, to provoke the eyes of His glory.

כִּ֤י כָשְׁלָה֙ יְר֣וּשָׁלִַ֔ם וִיהוּדָ֖ה נָפָ֑ל כִּֽי־לְשׁוֹנָ֤ם וּמַֽעַלְלֵיהֶם֙ אֶל־יְהוָ֔ה לַמְר֖וֹת עֵנֵ֥י כְבוֹדֽוֹ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): hakּara֤t pּeneyhem֙ 'a֣netah bּa֔m vechatּa'ta֛m kּisedo֥m higּi֖ydu lo֣ kiche֑du '֣oy lenapeshsha֔m kּiֽy-gamel֥u lahe֖m ra'aֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)The show of their countenance does witness against them; and they declare their sin as Sodom, they hide it not. Woe to their soul! for they have rewarded evil to themselves.

הַכָּרַ֤ת פְּנֵיהֶם֙ עָ֣נְתָה בָּ֔ם וְחַטָּאתָ֛ם כִּסְדֹ֥ם הִגִּ֖ידוּ לֹ֣א כִחֵ֑דוּ א֣וֹי לְנַפְשָׁ֔ם כִּֽי־גָמְל֥וּ לָהֶ֖ם רָעָֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): imer֥u tzadּi֖yq kּiy-t֑ob kּiֽy-peri֥y ma'aleleyhe֖m yo'keֽlu׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Say you to the righteous, that it shall be well with him: for they shall eat the fruit of their doings.

אִמְר֥וּ צַדִּ֖יק כִּי־ט֑וֹב כִּֽי־פְרִ֥י מַעַלְלֵיהֶ֖ם יֹאכֵֽלוּ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ֖oy lerashsha֣ ra֑ kּiֽy-gem֥ul yada֖yv ye'a֥shseh lּֽo׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Woe to the wicked! it shall be ill with him: for the reward of his hands shall be given him.

א֖וֹי לְרָשָׁ֣ע רָ֑ע כִּֽי־גְמ֥וּל יָדָ֖יו יֵעָ֥שֶׂה לּֽוֹ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): amּiy֙ nogeshsa֣yv me'ole֔l venashshi֖ym ma֣shshelu b֑o 'amּiy֙ me'ashshּere֣yka mate'i֔ym vede֥reke 'oֽrechote֖yka bּilּeֽ'u׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)As for My people, children are their oppressors, and women rule over them. O My people, they which lead you cause you to err, and destroy the way of your paths.

עַמִּי֙ נֹגְשָׂ֣יו מְעוֹלֵ֔ל וְנָשִׁ֖ים מָ֣שְׁלוּ ב֑וֹ עַמִּי֙ מְאַשְּׁרֶ֣יךָ מַתְעִ֔ים וְדֶ֥רֶךְ אֹֽרְחֹתֶ֖יךָ בִּלֵּֽעוּ׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): nitzּa֥b lari֖yb yehva֑h ve'ome֖d ladi֥yn 'amּiֽym׃

Edified Edition (EDE)The LORD stands up to plead, and stands to judge the people.

נִצָּ֥ב לָרִ֖יב יְהוָ֑ה וְעֹמֵ֖ד לָדִ֥ין עַמִּֽים׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): yehvah֙ bּemishshepּa֣t yab֔o 'im-ziqene֥y 'amּ֖o veshsara֑yv ve'atּem֙ bּiֽ'aretּe֣m hakּe֔rem gּezela֥t heֽ'ani֖y bּebatּeykeֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)The LORD will enter into judgement with the ancients of His people, and the princes thereof: for you have eaten up the vineyard; the spoil of the poor is in your houses.

יְהוָה֙ בְּמִשְׁפָּ֣ט יָב֔וֹא עִם־זִקְנֵ֥י עַמּ֖וֹ וְשָׂרָ֑יו וְאַתֶּם֙ בִּֽעַרְתֶּ֣ם הַכֶּ֔רֶם גְּזֵלַ֥ת הֶֽעָנִ֖י בְּבָתֵּיכֶֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): mlkm mah-lּakem֙ tּedakּe'֣u 'amּi֔y upene֥y 'aniyּi֖ym tּitecha֑nu ne'um-'adona֥y yehvi֖h tzeba'ֽot׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)What mean you that you beat My people to pieces, and grind the faces of the poor? says the Lord GOD of hosts.

מלכם מַה־לָּכֶם֙ תְּדַכְּא֣וּ עַמִּ֔י וּפְנֵ֥י עֲנִיִּ֖ים תִּטְחָ֑נוּ נְאֻם־אֲדֹנָ֥י יְהוִ֖ה צְבָאֽוֹת׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֣'mer yehva֗h ya֚'an kּi֤y gaֽbehu֙ bּen֣ot tziyּ֔on vatּela֨kenah֙ ntvvt netuy֣ot gּar֔on uֽmeshsaqּer֖ot 'eyna֑yim hal֤oke vetapop֙ tּela֔kenah uberageleyhe֖m tּe'akּaֽsenah׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Moreover the LORD says, "Because the daughters of Zion are haughty, and walk with stretched forth necks and wanton eyes, walking and mincing as they go, and making a tinkling with their feet:"

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר יְהוָ֗ה יַ֚עַן כִּ֤י גָֽבְהוּ֙ בְּנ֣וֹת צִיּ֔וֹן וַתֵּלַ֨כְנָה֙ נטוות נְטוּי֣וֹת גָּר֔וֹן וּֽמְשַׂקְּר֖וֹת עֵינָ֑יִם הָל֤וֹךְ וְטָפֹף֙ תֵּלַ֔כְנָה וּבְרַגְלֵיהֶ֖ם תְּעַכַּֽסְנָה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): veshsipּa֣ch 'adona֔y qadeqo֖d bּen֣ot tziyּ֑on vayhva֖h pּatehe֥n ye'areֽh׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)Therefore the Lord will smite with a scab the crown of the head of the daughters of Zion, and the LORD will discover their secret parts.

וְשִׂפַּ֣ח אֲדֹנָ֔י קָדְקֹ֖ד בְּנ֣וֹת צִיּ֑וֹן וַיהוָ֖ה פָּתְהֵ֥ן יְעָרֶֽה׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): bּayּ֨om hah֜u yasi֣yr 'adona֗y 'e֣t tּipe'e֧ret ha'akasi֛ym vehashshּebiysi֖ym vehashsּaharoniֽym׃

Edified Edition (EDE)In that day the Lord will take away the bravery of their tinkling ornaments about their feet, and their cauls, and their round tires like the moon,

בַּיּ֨וֹם הַה֜וּא יָסִ֣יר אֲדֹנָ֗י אֵ֣ת תִּפְאֶ֧רֶת הָעֲכָסִ֛ים וְהַשְּׁבִיסִ֖ים וְהַשַּׂהֲרֹנִֽים׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): hanּetiyp֥ot vehashshּeyr֖ot vehaֽre'alֽot׃

Edified Edition (EDE)The chains, and the bracelets, and the mufflers,

הַנְּטִיפ֥וֹת וְהַשֵּׁיר֖וֹת וְהָֽרְעָלֽוֹת׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): hapּe'eri֤ym vehatzּe'adot֙ vehaqּishshּuri֔ym ubatּe֥y hanּe֖peshsh vehalּechashshiֽym׃

Edified Edition (EDE)The bonnets, and the ornaments of the legs, and the headbands, and the tablets, and the earrings,

הַפְּאֵרִ֤ים וְהַצְּעָדוֹת֙ וְהַקִּשֻּׁרִ֔ים וּבָתֵּ֥י הַנֶּ֖פֶשׁ וְהַלְּחָשִֽׁים׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): hatּabּa'֖ot venizeme֥y ha'aֽp׃

Edified Edition (EDE)The rings, and nose jewels,

הַטַּבָּע֖וֹת וְנִזְמֵ֥י הָאָֽף׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): hamּaֽchalatzot֙ vehamּa֣'atap֔ot vehamּitepּach֖ot vehachariytiֽym׃

Edified Edition (EDE)The changeable suits of apparel, and the mantles, and the wimples, and the crisping pins,

הַמַּֽחֲלָצוֹת֙ וְהַמַּ֣עֲטָפ֔וֹת וְהַמִּטְפָּח֖וֹת וְהָחֲרִיטִֽים׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vehagּileyoniym֙ vehasּediyni֔ym vehatzּeniyp֖ot veharediydiֽym׃

Edified Edition (EDE)The glasses, and the fine linen, and the hoods, and the veils.

וְהַגִּלְיֹנִים֙ וְהַסְּדִינִ֔ים וְהַצְּנִיפ֖וֹת וְהָרְדִידִֽים׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vehayah֩ ta֨chat bּo֜shsem ma֣q yiֽheye֗h veta֨chat chagora֤h niqepּah֙ veta֨chat ma'ashse֤h miqeshsheh֙ qarecha֔h veta֥chat pּetiygi֖yl machago֣ret shsa֑q kּiy-ta֖chat yoֽpiy׃

Edified Edition (EDE)And it shall come to pass, that instead of sweet smell there shall be stink; and instead of a girdle a rent; and instead of well set hair baldness; and instead of a stomacher a girding of sackcloth; and burning instead of beauty.

וְהָיָה֩ תַ֨חַת בֹּ֜שֶׂם מַ֣ק יִֽהְיֶ֗ה וְתַ֨חַת חֲגוֹרָ֤ה נִקְפָּה֙ וְתַ֨חַת מַעֲשֶׂ֤ה מִקְשֶׁה֙ קָרְחָ֔ה וְתַ֥חַת פְּתִיגִ֖יל מַחֲגֹ֣רֶת שָׂ֑ק כִּי־תַ֖חַת יֹֽפִי׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): meta֖yike bּache֣reb yipּo֑lu ugeburate֖ke bּamּilechamaֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Your men shall fall by the sword, and your mighty in the war.

מְתַ֖יִךְ בַּחֶ֣רֶב יִפֹּ֑לוּ וּגְבוּרָתֵ֖ךְ בַּמִּלְחָמָֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'an֥u ve'abel֖u pּetache֑yha veniqּa֖tah la'a֥retz tּeshsheֽb׃

Edified Edition (EDE)And her gates shall lament and mourn; and she being desolate shall sit upon the ground.

וְאָנ֥וּ וְאָבְל֖וּ פְּתָחֶ֑יהָ וְנִקָּ֖תָה לָאָ֥רֶץ תֵּשֵֽׁב׃
