Chapter 36
1
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehi֡y bּe'arebּa'֩ 'eshsere֨h shshana֜h lamּe֣leke chizeqiyּa֗hu 'ala֞h sanecheri֤yb meֽleke-'ashshּur֙ 'a֣l kּal-'are֧y yehuda֛h habּetzur֖ot vaֽyּitepּeshseֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Now it came to pass in the fourteenth year of king Hezekiah, that Sennacherib king of Assyria came up against all the defenced cities of Judah, and took them.

וַיְהִ֡י בְּאַרְבַּע֩ עֶשְׂרֵ֨ה שָׁנָ֜ה לַמֶּ֣לֶךְ חִזְקִיָּ֗הוּ עָלָ֞ה סַנְחֵרִ֤יב מֶֽלֶךְ־אַשּׁוּר֙ עַ֣ל כָּל־עָרֵ֧י יְהוּדָ֛ה הַבְּצֻר֖וֹת וַֽיִּתְפְּשֵֽׂם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּishshela֣ch meֽleke-'ashshּ֣ur ׀ 'et-rab-shshaqe֨h milּaki֧yshsh yerushshala֛emah 'el-hamּe֥leke chizeqiyּa֖hu bּeche֣yl kּabe֑d vaֽyּa'amo֗d bּite'alat֙ habּereka֣h ha'eleyona֔h bּimesilּa֖t shsede֥h kobeֽs׃
Edified Edition (EDE)And the king of Assyria sent Rabshakeh from Lachish to Jerusalem to king Hezekiah with a great army. And he stood by the conduit of the upper pool in the highway of the fuller's field.

וַיִּשְׁלַ֣ח מֶֽלֶךְ־אַשּׁ֣וּר ׀ אֶת־רַב־שָׁקֵ֨ה מִלָּכִ֧ישׁ יְרוּשָׁלְַ֛מָה אֶל־הַמֶּ֥לֶךְ חִזְקִיָּ֖הוּ בְּחֵ֣יל כָּבֵ֑ד וַֽיַּעֲמֹ֗ד בִּתְעָלַת֙ הַבְּרֵכָ֣ה הָעֶלְיוֹנָ֔ה בִּמְסִלַּ֖ת שְׂדֵ֥ה כוֹבֵֽס׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּetze֥ 'ela֛yv 'eleyaqi֥ym bּen-chileqiyּa֖hu 'ashshe֣r 'al-habּa֑yit veshshebena'֙ hasּope֔r veyo'a֥ch bּen-'asa֖p hamּazekּiֽyr׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then came forth to him Eliakim, Hilkiah's son, which was over the house, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah, Asaph's son, the recorder.

וַיֵּצֵ֥א אֵלָ֛יו אֶלְיָקִ֥ים בֶּן־חִלְקִיָּ֖הוּ אֲשֶׁ֣ר עַל־הַבָּ֑יִת וְשֶׁבְנָא֙ הַסֹּפֵ֔ר וְיוֹאָ֥ח בֶּן־אָסָ֖ף הַמַּזְכִּֽיר׃

4
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֤'mer 'aleyhem֙ rab-shshaqe֔h 'imeru-na֖ 'el-chizeqiyּa֑hu kּoֽh-'ama֞r hamּe֤leke hagּadol֙ me֣leke 'ashshּ֔ur ma֧h habּitּach֛on hazּe֖h 'ashshe֥r bּataֽchetּa׃
Edified Edition (EDE)And Rabshakeh said to them, "Say you now to Hezekiah, 'Thus says the great king, the king of Assyria, What confidence is this wherein you trust?'"

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֲלֵיהֶם֙ רַב־שָׁקֵ֔ה אִמְרוּ־נָ֖א אֶל־חִזְקִיָּ֑הוּ כֹּֽה־אָמַ֞ר הַמֶּ֤לֶךְ הַגָּדוֹל֙ מֶ֣לֶךְ אַשּׁ֔וּר מָ֧ה הַבִּטָּח֛וֹן הַזֶּ֖ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר בָּטָֽחְתָּ׃

5
Phonetic (Hebrew): ama֨retּiy֙ 'ake-dּebar-shsepata֔yim 'etza֥h ugebura֖h lamּilechama֑h 'atּah֙ 'al-mi֣y bata֔chetּa kּi֥y mara֖detּa bּiֽy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"I say, say you, (but they are but vain words) I have counsel and strength for war: now on whom do you trust, that you rebel against me?"

אָמַ֨רְתִּי֙ אַךְ־דְּבַר־שְׂפָתַ֔יִם עֵצָ֥ה וּגְבוּרָ֖ה לַמִּלְחָמָ֑ה עַתָּה֙ עַל־מִ֣י בָטַ֔חְתָּ כִּ֥י מָרַ֖דְתָּ בִּֽי׃

6
Phonetic (Hebrew): hinּe֣h bata֡chetּa 'al-mishshe'enet֩ haqּane֨h haratz֤utz hazּeh֙ 'al-mitzera֔yim 'ashshe֨r yisּame֥ke 'iyshsh֙ 'ala֔yv uba֥ bekapּ֖o uneqaba֑hּ kּe֚n pּare'o֣h meֽleke-mitzera֔yim lekaֽl-habּotechi֖ym 'alaֽyv׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"Lo, you trust in the staff of this broken reed, on Egypt; whereon if a man lean, it will go into his hand, and pierce it: so is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all that trust in him."

הִנֵּ֣ה בָטַ֡חְתָּ עַל־מִשְׁעֶנֶת֩ הַקָּנֶ֨ה הָרָצ֤וּץ הַזֶּה֙ עַל־מִצְרַ֔יִם אֲשֶׁ֨ר יִסָּמֵ֥ךְ אִישׁ֙ עָלָ֔יו וּבָ֥א בְכַפּ֖וֹ וּנְקָבָ֑הּ כֵּ֚ן פַּרְעֹ֣ה מֶֽלֶךְ־מִצְרַ֔יִם לְכָֽל־הַבֹּטְחִ֖ים עָלָֽיו׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vekiy-to'ma֣r 'ela֔y 'el-yehva֥h 'elohe֖ynu bּata֑chenu halo'-h֗u 'ashshe֨r hesi֤yr chizeqiyּa֨hu֙ 'et-bּamota֣yv ve'et-mizebּechota֔yv vayּo֤'mer liֽyhudah֙ veliyr֣ushshalai֔m lipene֛y hamּizebּe֥cha hazּe֖h tּiֽshshetּachavֽu׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"But if you say to me, 'We trust in the LORD our God:' is it not He, whose high places and whose altars Hezekiah has taken away, and said to Judah and to Jerusalem, 'You shall worship before this altar?'"

וְכִי־תֹאמַ֣ר אֵלַ֔י אֶל־יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֵ֖ינוּ בָּטָ֑חְנוּ הֲלוֹא־ה֗וּא אֲשֶׁ֨ר הֵסִ֤יר חִזְקִיָּ֨הוּ֙ אֶת־בָּמֹתָ֣יו וְאֶת־מִזְבְּחֹתָ֔יו וַיֹּ֤אמֶר לִֽיהוּדָה֙ וְלִיר֣וּשָׁלִַ֔ם לִפְנֵ֛י הַמִּזְבֵּ֥חַ הַזֶּ֖ה תִּֽשְׁתַּחֲוֽוּ׃

8
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'atּah֙ hite'a֣reb na֔ 'et-'adoni֖y hamּe֣leke 'ashshּ֑ur ve'etּena֤h leka֙ 'alepּa֣yim susi֔ym 'im-tּuka֕l la֥tet leka֖ rokebi֥ym 'aleyheֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"Now therefore give pledges, I pray you, to my master the king of Assyria, and I will give you two thousand horses, if you be able on your part to set riders upon them."

וְעַתָּה֙ הִתְעָ֣רֶב נָ֔א אֶת־אֲדֹנִ֖י הַמֶּ֣לֶךְ אַשּׁ֑וּר וְאֶתְּנָ֤ה לְךָ֙ אַלְפַּ֣יִם סוּסִ֔ים אִם־תּוּכַ֕ל לָ֥תֶת לְךָ֖ רֹכְבִ֥ים עֲלֵיהֶֽם׃

9
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'e֣yke tּashshi֗yb 'e֠t pּene֨y pacha֥t 'acha֛d 'abede֥y 'adoni֖y haqetanּi֑ym vatּibeta֤ch leka֙ 'al-mitzera֔yim lere֖keb uleparashshiֽym׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"How then will you turn away the face of one captain of the least of my master's servants, and put your trust on Egypt for chariots and for horsemen?"

וְאֵ֣יךְ תָּשִׁ֗יב אֵ֠ת פְּנֵ֨י פַחַ֥ת אַחַ֛ד עַבְדֵ֥י אֲדֹנִ֖י הַקְטַנִּ֑ים וַתִּבְטַ֤ח לְךָ֙ עַל־מִצְרַ֔יִם לְרֶ֖כֶב וּלְפָרָשִֽׁים׃

10
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'atּah֙ hamibּale'ade֣y yehva֔h 'ali֛ytiy 'al-ha'a֥retz hazּo֖'t lehashshechiyta֑hּ yehvah֙ 'ama֣r 'ela֔y 'ale֛h 'el-ha'a֥retz hazּo֖'t vehashshechiytaֽhּ׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"And am I now come up without the LORD against this land to destroy it? The LORD said to me, 'Go up against this land, and destroy it.'"

וְעַתָּה֙ הֲמִבַּלְעֲדֵ֣י יְהוָ֔ה עָלִ֛יתִי עַל־הָאָ֥רֶץ הַזֹּ֖את לְהַשְׁחִיתָ֑הּ יְהוָה֙ אָמַ֣ר אֵלַ֔י עֲלֵ֛ה אֶל־הָאָ֥רֶץ הַזֹּ֖את וְהַשְׁחִיתָֽהּ׃

11
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֣'mer 'eleyaqiym֩ veshshebena֨ veyo'a֜ch 'el-rab-shshaqe֗h dּabּer-na֤ 'el-'abade֨yka֙ 'arami֔yt kּi֥y shshome'i֖ym 'ana֑chenu ve'al-tּedabּe֤r 'ele֨ynu֙ yehudi֔yt bּe'azene֣y ha'a֔m 'ashshe֖r 'al-hachomaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then said Eliakim and Shebna and Joah to Rabshakeh, "Speak, I pray you, to your servants in the Syrian language; for we understand it: and speak not to us in the Jews' language, in the ears of the people that are on the wall."

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֶלְיָקִים֩ וְשֶׁבְנָ֨א וְיוֹאָ֜ח אֶל־רַב־שָׁקֵ֗ה דַּבֶּר־נָ֤א אֶל־עֲבָדֶ֨יךָ֙ אֲרָמִ֔ית כִּ֥י שֹׁמְעִ֖ים אֲנָ֑חְנוּ וְאַל־תְּדַבֵּ֤ר אֵלֵ֨ינוּ֙ יְהוּדִ֔ית בְּאָזְנֵ֣י הָעָ֔ם אֲשֶׁ֖ר עַל־הַחוֹמָֽה׃

12
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֣'mer rab-shshaqe֗h ha'e֨l 'adone֤yka ve'ele֨yka֙ shshelacha֣niy 'adoni֔y ledabּe֖r 'et-hadּebari֣ym ha'e֑lּeh halo֣ 'al-ha'anashshi֗ym hayּoֽshshebiym֙ 'al-ha֣choma֔h le'eko֣l 'et-chr'yhm tzo'ata֗m velishshetּ֛ot 'et-shynyhm meyme֥y rageleyhe֖m 'imּakeֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)But Rabshakeh said, "Has my master sent me to your master and to you to speak these words? has he not sent me to the men that sit upon the wall, that they may eat their own dung, and drink their own piss with you?"

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר רַב־שָׁקֵ֗ה הַאֶ֨ל אֲדֹנֶ֤יךָ וְאֵלֶ֨יךָ֙ שְׁלָחַ֣נִי אֲדֹנִ֔י לְדַבֵּ֖ר אֶת־הַדְּבָרִ֣ים הָאֵ֑לֶּה הֲלֹ֣א עַל־הָאֲנָשִׁ֗ים הַיֹּֽשְׁבִים֙ עַל־הַ֣חוֹמָ֔ה לֶאֱכֹ֣ל אֶת־חראיהם צוֹאָתָ֗ם וְלִשְׁתּ֛וֹת אֶת־שיניהם מֵימֵ֥י רַגְלֵיהֶ֖ם עִמָּכֶֽם׃

13
Phonetic (Hebrew): vaֽyּa'amod֙ rab-shshaqe֔h vayּiqera֥ beqol-gּad֖ol yehudi֑yt vayּo֕'mer shshime'֗u 'et-dּibere֛y hamּe֥leke hagּad֖ol me֥leke 'ashshּֽur׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then Rabshakeh stood, and cried with a loud voice in the Jews' language, and said, "Hear you the words of the great king, the king of Assyria."

וַֽיַּעֲמֹד֙ רַב־שָׁקֵ֔ה וַיִּקְרָ֥א בְקוֹל־גָּד֖וֹל יְהוּדִ֑ית וַיֹּ֕אמֶר שִׁמְע֗וּ אֶת־דִּבְרֵ֛י הַמֶּ֥לֶךְ הַגָּד֖וֹל מֶ֥לֶךְ אַשּֽׁוּר׃

14
Phonetic (Hebrew): kּo֚h 'ama֣r hamּe֔leke 'al-yashshּi֥ lake֖m chizeqiyּa֑hu kּi֥y loֽ'-yuka֖l lehatzּi֥yl 'etekeֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"Thus says the king, 'Let not Hezekiah deceive you: for he shall not be able to deliver you.'"

כֹּ֚ה אָמַ֣ר הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ אַל־יַשִּׁ֥א לָכֶ֖ם חִזְקִיָּ֑הוּ כִּ֥י לֹֽא־יוּכַ֖ל לְהַצִּ֥יל אֶתְכֶֽם׃

15
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'al-yabeta֨ch 'eteke֤m chizeqiyּa֨hu֙ 'el-yehva֣h le'mo֔r hatzּe֥l yatzּiyle֖nu yehva֑h lo֤ tinּaten֙ ha'i֣yr hazּo֔'t bּeya֖d me֥leke 'ashshּֽur׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"'Neither let Hezekiah make you trust in the LORD, saying, The LORD will surely deliver us: this city shall not be delivered into the hand of the king of Assyria.'"

וְאַל־יַבְטַ֨ח אֶתְכֶ֤ם חִזְקִיָּ֨הוּ֙ אֶל־יְהוָ֣ה לֵאמֹ֔ר הַצֵּ֥ל יַצִּילֵ֖נוּ יְהוָ֑ה לֹ֤א תִנָּתֵן֙ הָעִ֣יר הַזֹּ֔את בְּיַ֖ד מֶ֥לֶךְ אַשּֽׁוּר׃

16
Phonetic (Hebrew): aֽl-tּishsheme'֖u 'el-chizeqiyּa֑hu s kּiy֩ ko֨h 'ama֜r hamּe֣leke 'ashshּ֗ur 'ashsֽu-'itּi֤y berakah֙ utze'֣u 'ela֔y ve'ikel֤u 'iyshsh-gּapeno֙ ve'i֣yshsh tּe'enat֔o ushshet֖u 'i֥yshsh mey-borֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"Hearken not to Hezekiah: for thus says the king of Assyria, 'Make an agreement with me by a present, and come out to me: and eat you every one of his vine, and every one of his fig tree, and drink you every one the waters of his own cistern;'"

אַֽל־תִּשְׁמְע֖וּ אֶל־חִזְקִיָּ֑הוּ ס כִּי֩ כֹ֨ה אָמַ֜ר הַמֶּ֣לֶךְ אַשּׁ֗וּר עֲשֽׂוּ־אִתִּ֤י בְרָכָה֙ וּצְא֣וּ אֵלַ֔י וְאִכְל֤וּ אִישׁ־גַּפְנוֹ֙ וְאִ֣ישׁ תְּאֵנָת֔וֹ וּשְׁת֖וּ אִ֥ישׁ מֵי־בוֹרֽוֹ׃

17
Phonetic (Hebrew): ad-bּo'i֕y velaqachetּi֥y 'eteke֖m 'el-'e֣retz kּe'aretzeke֑m 'e֤retz dּagan֙ vetiyr֔oshsh 'e֥retz le֖chem ukeramiֽym׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"'Until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, a land of corn and wine, a land of bread and vineyards.'"

עַד־בֹּאִ֕י וְלָקַחְתִּ֥י אֶתְכֶ֖ם אֶל־אֶ֣רֶץ כְּאַרְצְכֶ֑ם אֶ֤רֶץ דָּגָן֙ וְתִיר֔וֹשׁ אֶ֥רֶץ לֶ֖חֶם וּכְרָמִֽים׃

18
Phonetic (Hebrew): pּen-yasּi֨yt 'eteke֤m chizeqiyּa֨hu֙ le'mo֔r yehva֖h yatzּiyle֑nu hahitzּi֜ylu 'elohe֤y hagּoyim֙ 'i֣yshsh 'et-'aretz֔o miyּa֖d me֥leke 'ashshּֽur׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"'Beware lest Hezekiah persuade you, saying, The LORD will deliver us. Has any of the gods of the nations delivered his land out of the hand of the king of Assyria?'"

פֶּן־יַסִּ֨ית אֶתְכֶ֤ם חִזְקִיָּ֨הוּ֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר יְהוָ֖ה יַצִּילֵ֑נוּ הַהִצִּ֜ילוּ אֱלֹהֵ֤י הַגּוֹיִם֙ אִ֣ישׁ אֶת־אַרְצ֔וֹ מִיַּ֖ד מֶ֥לֶךְ אַשּֽׁוּר׃

19
Phonetic (Hebrew): ayּe֞h 'elohe֤y chamat֙ ve'arepּa֔d 'ayּe֖h 'elohe֣y separeva֑yim vekiֽy-hitzּi֥ylu 'et-shshomer֖on miyּadiֽy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"'Where are the gods of Hamath and Arpad? where are the gods of Sepharvaim? and have they delivered Samaria out of my hand?'"

אַיֵּ֞ה אֱלֹהֵ֤י חֲמָת֙ וְאַרְפָּ֔ד אַיֵּ֖ה אֱלֹהֵ֣י סְפַרְוָ֑יִם וְכִֽי־הִצִּ֥ילוּ אֶת־שֹׁמְר֖וֹן מִיָּדִֽי׃

20
Phonetic (Hebrew): mi֗y bּekal-'elohe֤y haֽ'aratzot֙ ha'e֔lּeh 'ashsher-hitzּi֥ylu 'et-'aretza֖m miyּadi֑y kּiֽy-yatzּi֧yl yehva֛h 'et-yerushshala֖im miyּadiֽy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"'Who are they among all the gods of these lands, that have delivered their land out of my hand, that the LORD should deliver Jerusalem out of my hand?'"

מִ֗י בְּכָל־אֱלֹהֵ֤י הָֽאֲרָצוֹת֙ הָאֵ֔לֶּה אֲשֶׁר־הִצִּ֥ילוּ אֶת־אַרְצָ֖ם מִיָּדִ֑י כִּֽי־יַצִּ֧יל יְהוָ֛ה אֶת־יְרוּשָׁלִַ֖ם מִיָּדִֽי׃

21
Phonetic (Hebrew): vaֽyּachari֔yshshu veloֽ'-'an֥u 'ot֖o dּaba֑r kּiֽy-mitzeva֨t hamּe֥leke hi֛y le'mo֖r lo֥ ta'anuֽhu׃
Edified Edition (EDE)But they held their peace, and answered him not a word: for the king's commandment was, saying, "Answer him not."

וַֽיַּחֲרִ֔ישׁוּ וְלֹֽא־עָנ֥וּ אֹת֖וֹ דָּבָ֑ר כִּֽי־מִצְוַ֨ת הַמֶּ֥לֶךְ הִ֛יא לֵאמֹ֖ר לֹ֥א תַעֲנֻֽהוּ׃

22
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּabo֣ 'eleyaqi֣ym bּen-chileqiyּa֣hu 'ashsher-'al-ha֠bּayit veshshebena֨ hasּope֜r veyo'a֨ch bּen-'asa֧p hamּazekּi֛yr 'el-chizeqiyּa֖hu qeru'e֣y begadi֑ym vayּagּi֣ydu l֔o 'e֖t dּibere֥y rab-shshaqeֽh׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)Then came Eliakim, the son of Hilkiah, that was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah, the son of Asaph, the recorder, to Hezekiah with their clothes rent, and told him the words of Rabshakeh.

וַיָּבֹ֣א אֶלְיָקִ֣ים בֶּן־חִלְקִיָּ֣הוּ אֲשֶׁר־עַל־הַ֠בַּיִת וְשֶׁבְנָ֨א הַסּוֹפֵ֜ר וְיוֹאָ֨ח בֶּן־אָסָ֧ף הַמַּזְכִּ֛יר אֶל־חִזְקִיָּ֖הוּ קְרוּעֵ֣י בְגָדִ֑ים וַיַּגִּ֣ידוּ ל֔וֹ אֵ֖ת דִּבְרֵ֥י רַב־שָׁקֵֽה׃ס
