Chapter 14
1
Phonetic (Hebrew): ashshe֨r haya֤h debar-yehvah֙ 'eֽl-yiremeya֔hu 'al-dּibere֖y habּatzּarֽot׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The word of the LORD that came to Jeremiah concerning the dearth.

אֲשֶׁ֨ר הָיָ֤ה דְבַר־יְהוָה֙ אֶֽל־יִרְמְיָ֔הוּ עַל־דִּבְרֵ֖י הַבַּצָּרֽוֹת׃

2
Phonetic (Hebrew): abela֣h yehuda֔h ushshe'are֥yha 'umelel֖u qader֣u la'a֑retz vetzivecha֥t yerushshala֖im 'alaֽtah׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Judah mourns, and the gates thereof languish; they are black to the ground; and the cry of Jerusalem is gone up.

אָבְלָ֣ה יְהוּדָ֔ה וּשְׁעָרֶ֥יהָ אֻמְלְל֖וּ קָדְר֣וּ לָאָ֑רֶץ וְצִוְחַ֥ת יְרוּשָׁלִַ֖ם עָלָֽתָה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'adּi֣reyhe֔m shshalech֥u tz'vryhm tze'iyreyhe֖m lamּa֑yim bּa֣'u 'al-gּebi֞ym lo'-ma֣tze'u ma֗yim shsha֤bu keleyhem֙ reyqa֔m bּo֥shshu vehakelem֖u vechap֥u ro'shshaֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)And their nobles have sent their little ones to the waters: they came to the pits, and found no water; they returned with their vessels empty; they were ashamed and confounded, and covered their heads.

וְאַדִּ֣רֵיהֶ֔ם שָׁלְח֥וּ צעוריהם צְעִירֵיהֶ֖ם לַמָּ֑יִם בָּ֣אוּ עַל־גֵּבִ֞ים לֹא־מָ֣צְאוּ מַ֗יִם שָׁ֤בוּ כְלֵיהֶם֙ רֵיקָ֔ם בֹּ֥שׁוּ וְהָכְלְמ֖וּ וְחָפ֥וּ רֹאשָֽׁם׃

4
Phonetic (Hebrew): bּa'ab֤ur ha'adamah֙ cha֔tּah kּi֛y lo'-haya֥h ge֖shshem bּa'a֑retz bּo֥shshu 'ikּari֖ym chap֥u ro'shshaֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Because the ground is chapt, for there was no rain in the earth, the plowmen were ashamed, they covered their heads.

בַּעֲב֤וּר הָאֲדָמָה֙ חַ֔תָּה כִּ֛י לֹא־הָיָ֥ה גֶ֖שֶׁם בָּאָ֑רֶץ בֹּ֥שׁוּ אִכָּרִ֖ים חָפ֥וּ רֹאשָֽׁם׃

5
Phonetic (Hebrew): kּi֤y gam-'ayּe֨let֙ bּashsּade֔h yaleda֖h ve'az֑ob kּi֥y loֽ'-haya֖h dּeֽshshe'׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Yes, the hind also calved in the field, and forsook it, because there was no grass.

כִּ֤י גַם־אַיֶּ֨לֶת֙ בַּשָּׂדֶ֔ה יָלְדָ֖ה וְעָז֑וֹב כִּ֥י לֹֽא־הָיָ֖ה דֶּֽשֶׁא׃

6
Phonetic (Hebrew): upera'iym֙ 'amed֣u 'al-shshepayi֔m shsha'ap֥u r֖ucha kּatּanּi֑ym kּal֥u 'eyneyhe֖m kּiy-'e֥yn 'eֽshseb׃
Edified Edition (EDE)And the wild asses did stand in the high places, they snuffed up the wind like dragons; their eyes did fail, because there was no grass.

וּפְרָאִים֙ עָמְד֣וּ עַל־שְׁפָיִ֔ם שָׁאֲפ֥וּ ר֖וּחַ כַּתַּנִּ֑ים כָּל֥וּ עֵינֵיהֶ֖ם כִּי־אֵ֥ין עֵֽשֶׂב׃

7
Phonetic (Hebrew): im-'avone֨ynu֙ 'a֣nu ba֔nu yehva֕h 'ashse֖h lema֣'an shsheme֑ka kּiֽy-rabּ֥u meshshubote֖ynu leka֥ chataֽ'nu׃
Edified Edition (EDE)O LORD, though our iniquities testify against us, do You it for Your name's sake: for our backslidings are many; we have sinned against You.

אִם־עֲוֺנֵ֨ינוּ֙ עָ֣נוּ בָ֔נוּ יְהוָ֕ה עֲשֵׂ֖ה לְמַ֣עַן שְׁמֶ֑ךָ כִּֽי־רַבּ֥וּ מְשׁוּבֹתֵ֖ינוּ לְךָ֥ חָטָֽאנוּ׃

8
Phonetic (Hebrew): miqeveh֙ yishsera'e֔l mֽoshshiy'֖o bּe'e֣t tzara֑h la֤mּah tiֽheyeh֙ kּege֣r bּa'a֔retz uke'ore֖cha nata֥h lalֽun׃
Edified Edition (EDE)O the hope of Israel, the saviour thereof in time of trouble, why should You be as a stranger in the land, and as a wayfaring man that turns aside to tarry for a night?

מִקְוֵה֙ יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל מֽוֹשִׁיע֖וֹ בְּעֵ֣ת צָרָ֑ה לָ֤מָּה תִֽהְיֶה֙ כְּגֵ֣ר בָּאָ֔רֶץ וּכְאֹרֵ֖חַ נָטָ֥ה לָלֽוּן׃

9
Phonetic (Hebrew): la֤mּah tiֽheyeh֙ kּe'i֣yshsh nideha֔m kּegibּ֖or lo'-yuka֣l lehoshshi֑y'a ve'atּa֧h beqirebּe֣nu yehva֗h veshshimeka֛ 'ale֥ynu niqera֖ 'al-tּanּicheֽnu׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)Why should You be as a man astonied, as a mighty man that cannot save? yet You, O LORD, are in the midst of us, and we are called by Your name; leave us not.

לָ֤מָּה תִֽהְיֶה֙ כְּאִ֣ישׁ נִדְהָ֔ם כְּגִבּ֖וֹר לֹא־יוּכַ֣ל לְהוֹשִׁ֑יעַ וְאַתָּ֧ה בְקִרְבֵּ֣נוּ יְהוָ֗ה וְשִׁמְךָ֛ עָלֵ֥ינוּ נִקְרָ֖א אַל־תַּנִּחֵֽנוּ׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): kּoֽh-'ama֨r yehva֜h la'a֣m hazּe֗h kּe֤n 'aֽhabu֙ lan֔u'a rageleyhe֖m lo֣ chashsa֑ku vayhvah֙ lo֣ ratza֔m 'atּah֙ yizekּo֣r 'avona֔m veyipeqo֖d chatּo'taֽm׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)Thus says the LORD to this people, "Thus have they loved to wander, they have not refrained their feet, therefore the LORD does not accept them; He will now remember their iniquity, and visit their sins."

כֹּֽה־אָמַ֨ר יְהוָ֜ה לָעָ֣ם הַזֶּ֗ה כֵּ֤ן אָֽהֲבוּ֙ לָנ֔וּעַ רַגְלֵיהֶ֖ם לֹ֣א חָשָׂ֑כוּ וַיהוָה֙ לֹ֣א רָצָ֔ם עַתָּה֙ יִזְכֹּ֣ר עֲוֺנָ֔ם וְיִפְקֹ֖ד חַטֹּאתָֽם׃ס

11
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֥'mer yehva֖h 'ela֑y 'al-tּitepּalּe֛l bּe'ad-ha'a֥m hazּe֖h letobaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then said the LORD to me, "Pray not for this people for their good."

וַיֹּ֥אמֶר יְהוָ֖ה אֵלָ֑י אַל־תִּתְפַּלֵּ֛ל בְּעַד־הָעָ֥ם הַזֶּ֖ה לְטוֹבָֽה׃

12
Phonetic (Hebrew): kּi֣y yatzu֗mu 'eyne֤nּiy shshome֨'a֙ 'el-rinּata֔m veki֧y ya'al֛u 'ola֥h uminecha֖h 'eyne֣nּiy rotza֑m kּi֗y bּache֨reb֙ ubara'a֣b ubadּe֔ber 'anoki֖y mekalּe֥h 'otaֽm׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)"When they fast, I will not hear their cry; and when they offer burnt offering and an oblation, I will not accept them: but I will consume them by the sword, and by the famine, and by the pestilence."

כִּ֣י יָצֻ֗מוּ אֵינֶ֤נִּי שֹׁמֵ֨עַ֙ אֶל־רִנָּתָ֔ם וְכִ֧י יַעֲל֛וּ עֹלָ֥ה וּמִנְחָ֖ה אֵינֶ֣נִּי רֹצָ֑ם כִּ֗י בַּחֶ֨רֶב֙ וּבָרָעָ֣ב וּבַדֶּ֔בֶר אָנֹכִ֖י מְכַלֶּ֥ה אוֹתָֽם׃ס

13
Phonetic (Hebrew): va'oma֞r 'aha֣hּ ׀ 'adona֣y yehvi֗h hinּe֨h hanּebi'i֜ym 'omeri֤ym lahem֙ loֽ'-tire'֣u che֔reb vera'a֖b loֽ'-yiheye֣h lake֑m kּiֽy-shshel֤om 'emet֙ 'etּe֣n lake֔m bּamּaq֖om hazּeֽh׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)Then said I, "Ah, Lord GOD! behold, the prophets say to them, 'You shall not see the sword, neither shall you have famine; but I will give you assured peace in this place.'"

וָאֹמַ֞ר אֲהָ֣הּ ׀ אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהוִ֗ה הִנֵּ֨ה הַנְּבִאִ֜ים אֹמְרִ֤ים לָהֶם֙ לֹֽא־תִרְא֣וּ חֶ֔רֶב וְרָעָ֖ב לֹֽא־יִהְיֶ֣ה לָכֶ֑ם כִּֽי־שְׁל֤וֹם אֱמֶת֙ אֶתֵּ֣ן לָכֶ֔ם בַּמָּק֖וֹם הַזֶּֽה׃ס

14
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֨'mer yehva֜h 'ela֗y shshe֚qer hanּebi'iym֙ nibּe'i֣ym bּishshemi֔y lo֤ shshelachetּiym֙ velo֣ tziuiyti֔ym velo֥ dibּa֖retּiy 'aleyhe֑m chaz֨on shshe֜qer veqe֤sem v'lvl veֽ'eliyl֙ vtrmvt vetaremi֣yt libּa֔m he֖mּah miֽtenabּe'i֥ym lakeֽm׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)Then the LORD said to me, "The prophets prophesy lies in My name: I sent them not, neither have I commanded them, neither spoke to them: they prophesy to you a false vision and divination, and a thing of nought, and the deceit of their heart."

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר יְהוָ֜ה אֵלַ֗י שֶׁ֚קֶר הַנְּבִאִים֙ נִבְּאִ֣ים בִּשְׁמִ֔י לֹ֤א שְׁלַחְתִּים֙ וְלֹ֣א צִוִּיתִ֔ים וְלֹ֥א דִבַּ֖רְתִּי אֲלֵיהֶ֑ם חֲז֨וֹן שֶׁ֜קֶר וְקֶ֤סֶם ואלול וֶֽאֱלִיל֙ ותרמות וְתַרְמִ֣ית לִבָּ֔ם הֵ֖מָּה מִֽתְנַבְּאִ֥ים לָכֶֽם׃ס

15
Phonetic (Hebrew): lake֞n kּoֽh-'ama֣r yehva֗h 'aֽl-hanּebi'i֞ym hanּibּe'i֣ym bּishshemiy֮ va'ani֣y loֽ'-shshelachetּiym֒ vehe֨mּah֙ 'oֽmeri֔ym che֣reb vera'a֔b lo֥ yiheye֖h bּa'a֣retz hazּo֑'t bּache֤reb ubaֽra'ab֙ yitּa֔mּu hanּebi'i֖ym haheֽmּah׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Therefore thus says the LORD concerning the prophets that prophesy in My name, and I sent them not, yet they say, "Sword and famine shall not be in this land;" "By sword and famine shall those prophets be consumed."

לָכֵ֞ן כֹּֽה־אָמַ֣ר יְהוָ֗ה עַֽל־הַנְּבִאִ֞ים הַנִּבְּאִ֣ים בִּשְׁמִי֮ וַאֲנִ֣י לֹֽא־שְׁלַחְתִּים֒ וְהֵ֨מָּה֙ אֹֽמְרִ֔ים חֶ֣רֶב וְרָעָ֔ב לֹ֥א יִהְיֶ֖ה בָּאָ֣רֶץ הַזֹּ֑את בַּחֶ֤רֶב וּבָֽרָעָב֙ יִתַּ֔מּוּ הַנְּבִאִ֖ים הָהֵֽמָּה׃

16
Phonetic (Hebrew): veha'a֣m 'ashsher-he֣mּah nibּe'i֣ym lahe֡m yiֽhey֣u mushshelakiym֩ bּechutz֨ot yerushshalai֜m mipּene֣y ׀ hara'a֣b vehache֗reb ve'e֤yn meqabּer֙ lahe֔mּah he֣mּah neshsheyhe֔m ubeneyhe֖m ubenoֽteyhe֑m veshshapaketּi֥y 'aleyhe֖m 'et-ra'ataֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"And the people to whom they prophesy shall be cast out in the streets of Jerusalem because of the famine and the sword; and they shall have none to bury them, them, their wives, nor their sons, nor their daughters: for I will pour their wickedness upon them."

וְהָעָ֣ם אֲשֶׁר־הֵ֣מָּה נִבְּאִ֣ים לָהֶ֡ם יִֽהְי֣וּ מֻשְׁלָכִים֩ בְּחֻצ֨וֹת יְרוּשָׁלִַ֜ם מִפְּנֵ֣י ׀ הָרָעָ֣ב וְהַחֶ֗רֶב וְאֵ֤ין מְקַבֵּר֙ לָהֵ֔מָּה הֵ֣מָּה נְשֵׁיהֶ֔ם וּבְנֵיהֶ֖ם וּבְנֹֽתֵיהֶ֑ם וְשָׁפַכְתִּ֥י עֲלֵיהֶ֖ם אֶת־רָעָתָֽם׃

17
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'amaretּa֤ 'aleyhem֙ 'et-hadּaba֣r hazּe֔h tּera֨denah 'eyna֥y dּime'a֛h la֥yelah veyoma֖m ve'al-tּideme֑ynah kּiy֩ shshe֨ber gּad֜ol nishshebּera֗h bּetulat֙ bּat-'amּi֔y makּa֖h nachela֥h me'oֽd׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"Therefore you shall say this word to them; 'Let my eyes run down with tears night and day, and let them not cease: for the virgin daughter of my people is broken with a great breach, with a very grievous blow.'"

וְאָמַרְתָּ֤ אֲלֵיהֶם֙ אֶת־הַדָּבָ֣ר הַזֶּ֔ה תֵּרַ֨דְנָה עֵינַ֥י דִּמְעָ֛ה לַ֥יְלָה וְיוֹמָ֖ם וְאַל־תִּדְמֶ֑ינָה כִּי֩ שֶׁ֨בֶר גָּד֜וֹל נִשְׁבְּרָ֗ה בְּתוּלַת֙ בַּת־עַמִּ֔י מַכָּ֖ה נַחְלָ֥ה מְאֹֽד׃

18
Phonetic (Hebrew): im-yatza֣'tiy hashsּade֗h vehinּeh֙ chaleley-che֔reb ve'im֙ bּa֣'tiy ha'i֔yr vehinּe֖h tּachalu'e֣y ra'a֑b kּiֽy-gam-nabi֧y gam-kּohe֛n sachar֥u 'el-'e֖retz velo֥ yadaֽ'u׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)"If I go forth into the field, then behold the slain with the sword! and if I enter into the city, then behold them that are sick with famine! yes, both the prophet and the priest go about into a land that they know not."

אִם־יָצָ֣אתִי הַשָּׂדֶ֗ה וְהִנֵּה֙ חַלְלֵי־חֶ֔רֶב וְאִם֙ בָּ֣אתִי הָעִ֔יר וְהִנֵּ֖ה תַּחֲלוּאֵ֣י רָעָ֑ב כִּֽי־גַם־נָבִ֧יא גַם־כֹּהֵ֛ן סָחֲר֥וּ אֶל־אֶ֖רֶץ וְלֹ֥א יָדָֽעוּ׃ס

19
Phonetic (Hebrew): hama'o֨s ma'a֜setּa 'et-yehuda֗h 'im-bּetziyּon֙ gּa'ala֣h napeshshe֔ka madּ֨u'a֙ hikּiyta֔nu ve'e֥yn la֖nu marepּe֑ qaue֤h leshshalom֙ ve'e֣yn t֔ob ule'e֥t marepּe֖ vehinּe֥h be'ataֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Hast You utterly rejected Judah? has Your soul loathed Zion? why hast You smitten us, and there is no healing for us? we looked for peace, and there is no good; and for the time of healing, and behold trouble!

הֲמָאֹ֨ס מָאַ֜סְתָּ אֶת־יְהוּדָ֗ה אִם־בְּצִיּוֹן֙ גָּעֲלָ֣ה נַפְשֶׁ֔ךָ מַדּ֨וּעַ֙ הִכִּיתָ֔נוּ וְאֵ֥ין לָ֖נוּ מַרְפֵּ֑א קַוֵּ֤ה לְשָׁלוֹם֙ וְאֵ֣ין ט֔וֹב וּלְעֵ֥ת מַרְפֵּ֖א וְהִנֵּ֥ה בְעָתָֽה׃

20
Phonetic (Hebrew): yada֧'enu yehva֛h rishshe'e֖nu 'avo֣n 'abote֑ynu kּi֥y chata֖'nu laֽke׃
Edified Edition (EDE)We acknowledge, O LORD, our wickedness, and the iniquity of our fathers: for we have sinned against You.

יָדַ֧עְנוּ יְהוָ֛ה רִשְׁעֵ֖נוּ עֲוֺ֣ן אֲבוֹתֵ֑ינוּ כִּ֥י חָטָ֖אנוּ לָֽךְ׃

21
Phonetic (Hebrew): al-tּine'atz֙ lema֣'an shshimeka֔ 'al-tּenabּe֖l kּisּe֣ kebode֑ka zeko֕r 'al-tּape֥r bּeriֽyteka֖ 'itּaֽnu׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Do not abhor us, for Your name's sake, do not disgrace the throne of Your glory: remember, break not Your covenant with us.

אַל־תִּנְאַץ֙ לְמַ֣עַן שִׁמְךָ֔ אַל־תְּנַבֵּ֖ל כִּסֵּ֣א כְבוֹדֶ֑ךָ זְכֹ֕ר אַל־תָּפֵ֥ר בְּרִֽיתְךָ֖ אִתָּֽנוּ׃

22
Phonetic (Hebrew): haye֨shsh bּehabele֤y hagּoyim֙ mageshshimi֔ym ve'im-hashshּama֖yim yitּen֣u rebibi֑ym halo֨ 'atּah-h֜u yehva֤h 'elohe֨ynu֙ u֨neqaueh-lּa֔ke kּiֽy-'atּa֥h 'ashsi֖yta 'et-kּal-'eֽlּeh׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)Are there any among the vanities of the Gentiles that can cause rain? or can the heavens give showers? are not you He, O LORD our God? therefore we will wait upon you: for You hast made all these things.

הֲיֵ֨שׁ בְּהַבְלֵ֤י הַגּוֹיִם֙ מַגְשִׁמִ֔ים וְאִם־הַשָּׁמַ֖יִם יִתְּנ֣וּ רְבִבִ֑ים הֲלֹ֨א אַתָּה־ה֜וּא יְהוָ֤ה אֱלֹהֵ֨ינוּ֙ וּ֨נְקַוֶּה־לָּ֔ךְ כִּֽי־אַתָּ֥ה עָשִׂ֖יתָ אֶת־כָּל־אֵֽלֶּה׃פ
