Chapter 21

Phonetic (Hebrew): hadּaba֛r 'ashsher-haya֥h 'eֽl-yiremeya֖hu me'e֣t yehva֑h bּishshelo֨cha 'ela֜yv hamּe֣leke tzideqiyּa֗hu 'et-pּashshechur֙ bּen-malekּiyּa֔h ve'et-tzepaneya֧h ben-ma'ashseya֛h hakּohe֖n le'moֽr׃

Edified Edition (EDE)The word which came to Jeremiah from the LORD, when king Zedekiah sent to him Pashur the son of Melchiah, and Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah the priest, saying,

הַדָּבָ֛ר אֲשֶׁר־הָיָ֥ה אֶֽל־יִרְמְיָ֖הוּ מֵאֵ֣ת יְהוָ֑ה בִּשְׁלֹ֨חַ אֵלָ֜יו הַמֶּ֣לֶךְ צִדְקִיָּ֗הוּ אֶת־פַּשְׁחוּר֙ בֶּן־מַלְכִּיָּ֔ה וְאֶת־צְפַנְיָ֧ה בֶן־מַעֲשֵׂיָ֛ה הַכֹּהֵ֖ן לֵאמֹֽר׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): dּerashsh-na֤ ba'ade֨nu֙ 'et-yehva֔h kּi֛y nebukadere'tzּa֥r meֽleke-bּabe֖l nilecha֣m 'ale֑ynu 'ulay֩ ya'ashse֨h yehva֤h 'ota֨nu֙ kּekal-nipele'ota֔yv veya'ale֖h me'aleֽynu׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)"Enquire, I pray you, of the LORD for us; for Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon makes war against us; if so be that the LORD will deal with us according to all His wondrous works, that he may go up from us."

דְּרָשׁ־נָ֤א בַעֲדֵ֨נוּ֙ אֶת־יְהוָ֔ה כִּ֛י נְבוּכַדְרֶאצַּ֥ר מֶֽלֶךְ־בָּבֶ֖ל נִלְחָ֣ם עָלֵ֑ינוּ אוּלַי֩ יַעֲשֶׂ֨ה יְהוָ֤ה אוֹתָ֨נוּ֙ כְּכָל־נִפְלְאֹתָ֔יו וְיַעֲלֶ֖ה מֵעָלֵֽינוּ׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֥'mer yiremeya֖hu 'aleyhe֑m kּo֥h to'meru֖n 'el-tzideqiyּaֽhu׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Then said Jeremiah to them, "Thus shall you say to Zedekiah:"

וַיֹּ֥אמֶר יִרְמְיָ֖הוּ אֲלֵיהֶ֑ם כֹּ֥ה תֹאמְרֻ֖ן אֶל־צִדְקִיָּֽהוּ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): kּoֽh-'ama֨r yehva֜h 'elohe֣y yishsera'e֗l hineni֣y meseb֮ 'et-kּele֣y hamּilechamah֮ 'ashshe֣r bּeyedekem֒ 'ashshe֨r 'atּe֜m nilechami֣ym bּa֗m 'et-me֤leke bּabel֙ ve'et-hakּashsedּi֔ym hatzּari֣ym 'aleyke֔m mich֖utz laֽchoma֑h ve'asapetּi֣y 'ota֔m 'el-tּ֖oke ha'i֥yr hazּoֽ't׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"Thus says the LORD God of Israel; 'Behold, I will turn back the weapons of war that are in your hands, wherewith you fight against the king of Babylon, and against the Chaldeans, which besiege you without the walls, and I will assemble them into the midst of this city.'"

כֹּֽה־אָמַ֨ר יְהוָ֜ה אֱלֹהֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל הִנְנִ֣י מֵסֵב֮ אֶת־כְּלֵ֣י הַמִּלְחָמָה֮ אֲשֶׁ֣ר בְּיֶדְכֶם֒ אֲשֶׁ֨ר אַתֶּ֜ם נִלְחָמִ֣ים בָּ֗ם אֶת־מֶ֤לֶךְ בָּבֶל֙ וְאֶת־הַכַּשְׂדִּ֔ים הַצָּרִ֣ים עֲלֵיכֶ֔ם מִח֖וּץ לַֽחוֹמָ֑ה וְאָסַפְתִּ֣י אוֹתָ֔ם אֶל־תּ֖וֹךְ הָעִ֥יר הַזֹּֽאת׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): venilechametּi֤y 'aniy֙ 'itּeke֔m bּeya֥d netuya֖h ubizer֣o'a chazaqa֑h ube'a֥p ubechema֖h ubeqe֥tzep gּadֽol׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"'And I Myself will fight against you with an outstretched hand and with a strong arm, even in anger, and in fury, and in great wrath.'"

וְנִלְחַמְתִּ֤י אֲנִי֙ אִתְּכֶ֔ם בְּיָ֥ד נְטוּיָ֖ה וּבִזְר֣וֹעַ חֲזָקָ֑ה וּבְאַ֥ף וּבְחֵמָ֖ה וּבְקֶ֥צֶף גָּדֽוֹל׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vehikּeyti֗y 'et-yֽoshshebey֙ ha'i֣yr hazּo֔'t ve'et-ha'ada֖m ve'et-habּehema֑h bּede֥ber gּad֖ol yamuֽtu׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"'And I will smite the inhabitants of this city, both man and beast: they shall die of a great pestilence.'"

וְהִכֵּיתִ֗י אֶת־יֽוֹשְׁבֵי֙ הָעִ֣יר הַזֹּ֔את וְאֶת־הָאָדָ֖ם וְאֶת־הַבְּהֵמָ֑ה בְּדֶ֥בֶר גָּד֖וֹל יָמֻֽתוּ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'acharey-ke֣n ne'um-yehva֡h 'etּe֣n 'et-tzideqiyּa֣hu meֽleke-yehuda֣h ve'et-'abada֣yv ׀ ve'et-ha'a֡m ve'et-hanּishshe'ariym֩ bּa'i֨yr hazּo֜'t min-hadּe֣ber ׀ min-hache֣reb umin-hara'a֗b bּeyad֙ nebukadere'tzּa֣r meֽleke-bּabe֔l ubeyad֙ 'oֽyebeyhe֔m ubeya֖d mebaqeshshe֣y napeshsha֑m vehikּa֣m lepiy-che֔reb loֽ'-yach֣us 'aleyhe֔m velo֥ yachemo֖l velo֥ yeracheֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"'And afterward,' says the LORD, 'I will deliver Zedekiah king of Judah, and his servants, and the people, and such as are left in this city from the pestilence, from the sword, and from the famine, into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon, and into the hand of their enemies, and into the hand of those that seek their life: and he shall smite them with the edge of the sword; he shall not spare them, neither have pity, nor have mercy.'"

וְאַחֲרֵי־כֵ֣ן נְאֻם־יְהוָ֡ה אֶתֵּ֣ן אֶת־צִדְקִיָּ֣הוּ מֶֽלֶךְ־יְהוּדָ֣ה וְאֶת־עֲבָדָ֣יו ׀ וְאֶת־הָעָ֡ם וְאֶת־הַנִּשְׁאָרִים֩ בָּעִ֨יר הַזֹּ֜את מִן־הַדֶּ֣בֶר ׀ מִן־הַחֶ֣רֶב וּמִן־הָרָעָ֗ב בְּיַד֙ נְבוּכַדְרֶאצַּ֣ר מֶֽלֶךְ־בָּבֶ֔ל וּבְיַד֙ אֹֽיְבֵיהֶ֔ם וּבְיַ֖ד מְבַקְשֵׁ֣י נַפְשָׁ֑ם וְהִכָּ֣ם לְפִי־חֶ֔רֶב לֹֽא־יָח֣וּס עֲלֵיהֶ֔ם וְלֹ֥א יַחְמֹ֖ל וְלֹ֥א יְרַחֵֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'el-ha'a֤m hazּeh֙ tּo'ma֔r kּo֖h 'ama֣r yehva֑h hineni֤y noten֙ lipeneyke֔m 'et-dּe֥reke hachayּi֖ym ve'et-dּe֥reke hamּaֽvet׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"And to this people you shall say, 'Thus says the LORD; Behold, I set before you the way of life, and the way of death.'"

וְאֶל־הָעָ֤ם הַזֶּה֙ תֹּאמַ֔ר כֹּ֖ה אָמַ֣ר יְהוָ֑ה הִנְנִ֤י נֹתֵן֙ לִפְנֵיכֶ֔ם אֶת־דֶּ֥רֶךְ הַחַיִּ֖ים וְאֶת־דֶּ֥רֶךְ הַמָּֽוֶת׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): hayּoshsheb֙ bּa'i֣yr hazּo֔'t yam֕ut bּache֖reb ubara'a֣b ubadּa֑ber vehayּotze'֩ venapa֨l 'al-hakּashsedּi֜ym hatzּari֤ym 'aleykem֙ ychyh vechaya֔h vehaֽyetah-lּ֥o napeshsh֖o leshshalaֽl׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"'He that abids in this city shall die by the sword, and by the famine, and by the pestilence: but he that goes out, and falls to the Chaldeans that besiege you, he shall live, and his life shall be to him for a prey.'"

הַיֹּשֵׁב֙ בָּעִ֣יר הַזֹּ֔את יָמ֕וּת בַּחֶ֖רֶב וּבָרָעָ֣ב וּבַדָּ֑בֶר וְהַיּוֹצֵא֩ וְנָפַ֨ל עַל־הַכַּשְׂדִּ֜ים הַצָּרִ֤ים עֲלֵיכֶם֙ יחיה וְחָיָ֔ה וְהָֽיְתָה־לּ֥וֹ נַפְשׁ֖וֹ לְשָׁלָֽל׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): kּi֣y shsa֣metּiy pa֠nay bּa'i֨yr hazּo֧'t lera'a֛h velo֥ letoba֖h ne'um-yehva֑h bּeyad-me֤leke bּabel֙ tּinּate֔n ushserapa֖hּ bּa'eֽshsh׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)"'For I have set My face against this city for evil, and not for good,' says the LORD: 'it shall be given into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he shall burn it with fire.'"

כִּ֣י שַׂ֣מְתִּי פָ֠נַי בָּעִ֨יר הַזֹּ֧את לְרָעָ֛ה וְלֹ֥א לְטוֹבָ֖ה נְאֻם־יְהוָ֑ה בְּיַד־מֶ֤לֶךְ בָּבֶל֙ תִּנָּתֵ֔ן וּשְׂרָפָ֖הּ בָּאֵֽשׁ׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): ulebeyt֙ me֣leke yehuda֔h shshime'֖u dּebar-yehvaֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"And touching the house of the king of Judah, say, 'Hear you the word of the LORD;'"

וּלְבֵית֙ מֶ֣לֶךְ יְהוּדָ֔ה שִׁמְע֖וּ דְּבַר־יְהוָֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): bּe֣yt dּavi֗d kּo֚h 'ama֣r yehva֔h dּi֤ynu labּo֨qer֙ mishshepּa֔t vehatzּi֥ylu gaz֖ul miyּa֣d 'oshshe֑q pּen-tּetze֨ ka'e֜shsh chamati֗y uba'arah֙ ve'e֣yn mekabּe֔h mipּene֖y ro֥'a m'llyhm ma'aleleykeֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"O house of David, thus says the LORD; 'Execute judgement in the morning, and deliver him that is spoiled out of the hand of the oppressor, lest My fury go out like fire, and burn that none can quench it, because of the evil of your doings.'"

בֵּ֣ית דָּוִ֗ד כֹּ֚ה אָמַ֣ר יְהוָ֔ה דִּ֤ינוּ לַבֹּ֨קֶר֙ מִשְׁפָּ֔ט וְהַצִּ֥ילוּ גָז֖וּל מִיַּ֣ד עוֹשֵׁ֑ק פֶּן־תֵּצֵ֨א כָאֵ֜שׁ חֲמָתִ֗י וּבָעֲרָה֙ וְאֵ֣ין מְכַבֶּ֔ה מִפְּנֵ֖י רֹ֥עַ מעלליהם מַעַלְלֵיכֶֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): hineni֨y 'ela֜yike yoshshe֧bet ha'e֛meq tz֥ur hamּiyshsho֖r ne'um-yehva֑h ha'oֽmeriym֙ miֽy-yecha֣t 'ale֔ynu umi֥y yab֖o bּime'onoteֽynu׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"Behold, I am against you, O inhabitant of the valley, and rock of the plain, says the LORD; which say, 'Who shall come down against us? or who shall enter into our habitations?'"

הִנְנִ֨י אֵלַ֜יִךְ יֹשֶׁ֧בֶת הָעֵ֛מֶק צ֥וּר הַמִּישֹׁ֖ר נְאֻם־יְהוָ֑ה הָאֹֽמְרִים֙ מִֽי־יֵחַ֣ת עָלֵ֔ינוּ וּמִ֥י יָב֖וֹא בִּמְעוֹנוֹתֵֽינוּ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): upaqadetּi֧y 'aleyke֛m kּiperi֥y ma'aleleyke֖m ne'um-yehva֑h vehitzּa֤tּiy 'eshsh֙ bּeya'era֔hּ ve'akela֖h kּal-sebiybeֽyha׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)"But I will punish you according to the fruit of your doings, says the LORD: and I will kindle a fire in the forest thereof, and it shall devour all things round about it."

וּפָקַדְתִּ֧י עֲלֵיכֶ֛ם כִּפְרִ֥י מַעַלְלֵיכֶ֖ם נְאֻם־יְהוָ֑ה וְהִצַּ֤תִּי אֵשׁ֙ בְּיַעְרָ֔הּ וְאָכְלָ֖ה כָּל־סְבִיבֶֽיהָ׃ס
