Chapter 3

Phonetic (Hebrew): le'mo֡r he֣n yeshshalּa֣ch 'i֣yshsh 'et-'ishshetּo֩ vehaleka֨h me'itּ֜o vehayeta֣h le'iyshsh-'ache֗r hayashsh֤ub 'ele֨yha֙ '֔od hal֛o chan֥op tּechena֖p ha'a֣retz hahi֑y ve'a֗tּe zaniyt֙ re'i֣ym rabּi֔ym veshsh֥ob 'ela֖y ne'um-yehovaֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)They say, "If a man put away his wife, and she go from him, and become another man's, shall he return to her again? shall not that land be greatly polluted?" but you hast played the harlot with many lovers; yet return again to Me, says the LORD.

לֵאמֹ֡ר הֵ֣ן יְשַׁלַּ֣ח אִ֣ישׁ אֶת־אִשְׁתּוֹ֩ וְהָלְכָ֨ה מֵאִתּ֜וֹ וְהָיְתָ֣ה לְאִישׁ־אַחֵ֗ר הֲיָשׁ֤וּב אֵלֶ֨יהָ֙ ע֔וֹד הֲל֛וֹא חָנ֥וֹף תֶּחֱנַ֖ף הָאָ֣רֶץ הַהִ֑יא וְאַ֗תְּ זָנִית֙ רֵעִ֣ים רַבִּ֔ים וְשׁ֥וֹב אֵלַ֖י נְאֻם־יְהֹוָֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): shse'iֽy-'eyna֨yike 'al-shshepayi֜m ure'i֗y 'eypoh֙ lo֣ shglt shshukּa֔betּe 'al-dּerakiym֙ yashsha֣betּe lahe֔m kּa'arabi֖y bּamּidebּa֑r vatּachani֣ypiy 'e֔retz bּizenuta֖yike ubera'ateֽke׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Lift up your eyes to the high places, and see where you hast not been lien with. In the ways hast you sat for them, as the Arabian in the wilderness; and you hast polluted the land with your whoredoms and with your wickedness.

שְׂאִֽי־עֵינַ֨יִךְ עַל־שְׁפָיִ֜ם וּרְאִ֗י אֵיפֹה֙ לֹ֣א שגלת שֻׁכַּ֔בְתְּ עַל־דְּרָכִים֙ יָשַׁ֣בְתְּ לָהֶ֔ם כַּעֲרָבִ֖י בַּמִּדְבָּ֑ר וַתַּחֲנִ֣יפִי אֶ֔רֶץ בִּזְנוּתַ֖יִךְ וּבְרָעָתֵֽךְ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּimּane'֣u rebibi֔ym umaleq֖oshsh l֣o haya֑h ume֨tzach 'ishshּa֤h zonah֙ ha֣yah la֔ke me'a֖netּe hikּaleֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Therefore the showers have been withholden, and there has been no latter rain; and you hadst a whore's forehead, you refusedst to be ashamed.

וַיִּמָּנְע֣וּ רְבִבִ֔ים וּמַלְק֖וֹשׁ ל֣וֹא הָיָ֑ה וּמֵ֨צַח אִשָּׁ֤ה זוֹנָה֙ הָ֣יָה לָ֔ךְ מֵאַ֖נְתְּ הִכָּלֵֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): hal֣o me'a֔tּah qr'ty qara֥'t li֖y 'abi֑y 'alּ֥up ne'ura֖y 'aֽtּah׃

Edified Edition (EDE)will you not from this time cry to Me, "My father, You are the guide of my youth?"

הֲל֣וֹא מֵעַ֔תָּה קראתי קָרָ֥את לִ֖י אָבִ֑י אַלּ֥וּף נְעֻרַ֖י אָֽתָּה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): hayineto֣r le'ola֔m 'im-yishshemo֖r lane֑tzach hinּe֥h dbrty dibּa֛retּe vatּa'ashsi֥y hara'֖ot vatּukaֽl׃p

Edified Edition (EDE)"Will He reserve His anger forever? will He keep it to the end?" Behold, you hast spoken and done evil things as you could.

הֲיִנְטֹ֣ר לְעוֹלָ֔ם אִם־יִשְׁמֹ֖ר לָנֶ֑צַח הִנֵּ֥ה דברתי דִבַּ֛רְתְּ וַתַּעֲשִׂ֥י הָרָע֖וֹת וַתּוּכָֽל׃פ

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֨'mer yehva֜h 'ela֗y bּiymey֙ yo'shshiyּa֣hu hamּe֔leke haֽra'i֔yta 'ashshe֥r 'ashseta֖h meshshuba֣h yishsera'e֑l holeka֨h hi֜y 'al-kּal-ha֣r gּabo֗hּa ve'el-tּa֛chat kּal-'e֥tz ra'ana֖n vatּizeniy-shshaֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)The LORD said also to me in the days of Josiah the king, "Hast you seen that which backsliding Israel has done? she is gone up upon every high mountain and under every green tree, and there has played the harlot."

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר יְהוָ֜ה אֵלַ֗י בִּימֵי֙ יֹאשִׁיָּ֣הוּ הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ הֲֽרָאִ֔יתָ אֲשֶׁ֥ר עָשְׂתָ֖ה מְשֻׁבָ֣ה יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל הֹלְכָ֨ה הִ֜יא עַל־כָּל־הַ֣ר גָּבֹ֗הַּ וְאֶל־תַּ֛חַת כָּל־עֵ֥ץ רַעֲנָ֖ן וַתִּזְנִי־שָֽׁם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): va'oma֗r 'achare֨y 'ashsota֧hּ 'et-kּal-'e֛lּeh 'ela֥y tּashsh֖ub velo'-shsha֑bah vtr'h vatּe֛re bּagoda֥h 'achota֖hּ yehudaֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"And I said after she had done all these things, 'Turn you to Me.' But she returned not. And her treacherous sister Judah saw it."

וָאֹמַ֗ר אַחֲרֵ֨י עֲשׂוֹתָ֧הּ אֶת־כָּל־אֵ֛לֶּה אֵלַ֥י תָּשׁ֖וּב וְלֹא־שָׁ֑בָה ותראה וַתֵּ֛רֶא בָּגוֹדָ֥ה אֲחוֹתָ֖הּ יְהוּדָֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): va'e֗re kּi֤y 'al-kּal-'odot֙ 'ashshe֤r niֽ'apah֙ meshshuba֣h yishsera'e֔l shshilּachetּi֕yha va'etּe֛n 'et-se֥per kּeriytute֖yha 'ele֑yha velo֨ yaֽre'a֜h bּoֽgeda֤h yehudah֙ 'achota֔hּ vatּe֖leke vatּi֥zen gּam-hiֽy'׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"And I saw, when for all the causes whereby backsliding Israel committed adultery I had put her away, and given her a bill of divorce; yet her treacherous sister Judah feared not, but went and played the harlot also."

וָאֵ֗רֶא כִּ֤י עַל־כָּל־אֹדוֹת֙ אֲשֶׁ֤ר נִֽאֲפָה֙ מְשֻׁבָ֣ה יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל שִׁלַּחְתִּ֕יהָ וָאֶתֵּ֛ן אֶת־סֵ֥פֶר כְּרִיתֻתֶ֖יהָ אֵלֶ֑יהָ וְלֹ֨א יָֽרְאָ֜ה בֹּֽגֵדָ֤ה יְהוּדָה֙ אֲחוֹתָ֔הּ וַתֵּ֖לֶךְ וַתִּ֥זֶן גַּם־הִֽיא׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vehayah֙ miqּo֣l zenuta֔hּ vatּechena֖p 'et-ha'a֑retz vatּine'a֥p 'et-ha'e֖ben ve'et-ha'eֽtz׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"And it came to pass through the lightness of her whoredom, that she defiled the land, and committed adultery with stones and with stocks."

וְהָיָה֙ מִקֹּ֣ל זְנוּתָ֔הּ וַתֶּחֱנַ֖ף אֶת־הָאָ֑רֶץ וַתִּנְאַ֥ף אֶת־הָאֶ֖בֶן וְאֶת־הָעֵֽץ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vegam-bּekal-zo֗'t lo'-shsha֨bah 'ela֜y bּagoda֧h 'achota֛hּ yehuda֖h bּekal-libּa֑hּ kּi֥y 'im-bּeshshe֖qer ne'um-yehvaֽh׃p

Edified Edition (EDE)"And yet for all this her treacherous sister Judah has not turned to Me with her whole heart, but feignedly," says the LORD.

וְגַם־בְּכָל־זֹ֗את לֹא־שָׁ֨בָה אֵלַ֜י בָּגוֹדָ֧ה אֲחוֹתָ֛הּ יְהוּדָ֖ה בְּכָל־לִבָּ֑הּ כִּ֥י אִם־בְּשֶׁ֖קֶר נְאֻם־יְהוָֽה׃פ

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֤'mer yehvah֙ 'ela֔y tzidּeqa֥h napeshsha֖hּ meshshuba֣h yishsera'e֑l mibּogeda֖h yehudaֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)And the LORD said to me, "The backsliding Israel has justified herself more than treacherous Judah."

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר יְהוָה֙ אֵלַ֔י צִדְּקָ֥ה נַפְשָׁ֖הּ מְשֻׁבָ֣ה יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל מִבֹּגֵדָ֖ה יְהוּדָֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): halo֡ke veqֽara'ta֩ 'et-hadּebari֨ym ha'e֜lּeh tzap֗onah ve֠'amaretּa shsh֣ubah meshshuba֤h yishsera'el֙ ne'um-yehva֔h lֽo'-'apּi֥yl pּana֖y bּake֑m kּiֽy-chasi֤yd 'aniy֙ ne'um-yehva֔h lo֥ 'etּ֖or le'olaֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"Go and proclaim these words toward the north, and say, 'Return, you backsliding Israel,' says the LORD; 'and I will not cause My anger to fall upon you: for I am merciful,' says the LORD, 'and I will not keep anger forever.'"

הָלֹ֡ךְ וְקָֽרָאתָ֩ אֶת־הַדְּבָרִ֨ים הָאֵ֜לֶּה צָפ֗וֹנָה וְ֠אָמַרְתָּ שׁ֣וּבָה מְשֻׁבָ֤ה יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ נְאֻם־יְהוָ֔ה לֽוֹא־אַפִּ֥יל פָּנַ֖י בָּכֶ֑ם כִּֽי־חָסִ֤יד אֲנִי֙ נְאֻם־יְהוָ֔ה לֹ֥א אֶטּ֖וֹר לְעוֹלָֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): a֚ke dּe'i֣y 'avone֔ke kּi֛y bּayhva֥h 'eloha֖yike pּashsha֑'atּe vatּepazּeri֨y 'et-dּeraka֜yike lazּari֗ym tּa֚chat kּal-'e֣tz ra'ana֔n ubeqoli֥y lo'-shshema'etּe֖m ne'um-yehovaֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"'Only acknowledge your iniquity, that you hast transgressed against the LORD your God, and hast scattered your ways to the strangers under every green tree, and you have not obeyed My voice,' says the LORD."

אַ֚ךְ דְּעִ֣י עֲוֺנֵ֔ךְ כִּ֛י בַּיהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהַ֖יִךְ פָּשָׁ֑עַתְּ וַתְּפַזְּרִ֨י אֶת־דְּרָכַ֜יִךְ לַזָּרִ֗ים תַּ֚חַת כָּל־עֵ֣ץ רַעֲנָ֔ן וּבְקוֹלִ֥י לֹא־שְׁמַעְתֶּ֖ם נְאֻם־יְהֹוָֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): shsh֣ubu bani֤ym shshobabiym֙ ne'um-yehva֔h kּi֥y 'anoki֖y bּa'a֣letּiy bake֑m velaqachetּi֨y 'eteke֜m 'echa֣d me'i֗yr ushshena֨yim֙ mimּishshepּacha֔h vehebe'ti֥y 'eteke֖m tziyּֽon׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"Turn, O backsliding children," says the LORD; "for I am married to you: and I will take you one of a city, and two of a family, and I will bring you to Zion:"

שׁ֣וּבוּ בָנִ֤ים שׁוֹבָבִים֙ נְאֻם־יְהוָ֔ה כִּ֥י אָנֹכִ֖י בָּעַ֣לְתִּי בָכֶ֑ם וְלָקַחְתִּ֨י אֶתְכֶ֜ם אֶחָ֣ד מֵעִ֗יר וּשְׁנַ֨יִם֙ מִמִּשְׁפָּחָ֔ה וְהֵבֵאתִ֥י אֶתְכֶ֖ם צִיּֽוֹן׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): venatatּi֥y lake֛m ro'i֖ym kּelibּi֑y vera'֥u 'eteke֖m dּe'a֥h vehashsekּeֽyl׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"And I will give you pastors according to My heart, which shall feed you with knowledge and understanding."

וְנָתַתִּ֥י לָכֶ֛ם רֹעִ֖ים כְּלִבִּ֑י וְרָע֥וּ אֶתְכֶ֖ם דֵּעָ֥ה וְהַשְׂכֵּֽיל׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vehaya֡h kּi֣y tirebּu֩ uperiyte֨m bּa'a֜retz bּayּami֤ym hahe֨mּah֙ ne'um-yehva֔h lo'-yo֣'meru '֗od 'aron֙ bּeriyt-yehva֔h velo֥ ya'ale֖h 'al-le֑b velo֤ yizekּeru-bo֙ velo֣ yipeqo֔du velo֥ ye'ashse֖h 'ֽod׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"And it shall come to pass, when you be multiplied and increased in the land, in those days," says the LORD, "they shall say no more, 'The ark of the covenant of the LORD:' neither shall it come to mind: neither shall they remember it; neither shall they visit it; neither shall that be done any more."

וְהָיָ֡ה כִּ֣י תִרְבּוּ֩ וּפְרִיתֶ֨ם בָּאָ֜רֶץ בַּיָּמִ֤ים הָהֵ֨מָּה֙ נְאֻם־יְהוָ֔ה לֹא־יֹ֣אמְרוּ ע֗וֹד אֲרוֹן֙ בְּרִית־יְהוָ֔ה וְלֹ֥א יַעֲלֶ֖ה עַל־לֵ֑ב וְלֹ֤א יִזְכְּרוּ־בוֹ֙ וְלֹ֣א יִפְקֹ֔דוּ וְלֹ֥א יֵעָשֶׂ֖ה עֽוֹד׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): bּa'e֣t hahi֗y yiqere'֤u liyrushshalai֨m֙ kּisּe֣ yehva֔h veniqeu֨u 'ele֧yha kaֽl-hagּoyi֛m leshshe֥m yehva֖h liyrushshala֑im velo'-yelek֣u '֔od 'achare֕y shsherir֖ut libּa֥m haraֽ'׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)"At that time they shall call Jerusalem the throne of the LORD; and all the nations shall be gathered to it, to the name of the LORD, to Jerusalem: neither shall they walk any more after the imagination of their evil heart."

בָּעֵ֣ת הַהִ֗יא יִקְרְא֤וּ לִירוּשָׁלִַ֨ם֙ כִּסֵּ֣א יְהוָ֔ה וְנִקְוּ֨וּ אֵלֶ֧יהָ כָֽל־הַגּוֹיִ֛ם לְשֵׁ֥ם יְהוָ֖ה לִירוּשָׁלִָ֑ם וְלֹא־יֵלְכ֣וּ ע֔וֹד אַחֲרֵ֕י שְׁרִר֖וּת לִבָּ֥ם הָרָֽע׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): bּayּami֣ym hahe֔mּah yelek֥u beyt-yehuda֖h 'al-bּe֣yt yishsera'e֑l veyabo֤'u yachedּav֙ me'e֣retz tzap֔on 'al-ha'a֕retz 'ashshe֥r hinecha֖letּiy 'et-'aboteykeֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"In those days the house of Judah shall walk with the house of Israel, and they shall come together out of the land of the north to the land that I have given for an inheritance to your fathers."

בַּיָּמִ֣ים הָהֵ֔מָּה יֵלְכ֥וּ בֵית־יְהוּדָ֖ה עַל־בֵּ֣ית יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וְיָבֹ֤אוּ יַחְדָּו֙ מֵאֶ֣רֶץ צָפ֔וֹן עַל־הָאָ֕רֶץ אֲשֶׁ֥ר הִנְחַ֖לְתִּי אֶת־אֲבוֹתֵיכֶֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'anoki֣y 'ama֗retּiy 'e֚yke 'ashshiyte֣ke bּabּani֔ym ve'etּen-lake֙ 'e֣retz chemedּa֔h nachala֥t tzebi֖y tzibe'֣ot gּoyi֑m va'oma֗r 'abiy֙ tqr'v tּiqere'iy-li֔y ume'achara֖y lo֥ tshvbv tashshֽubiy׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"But I said, 'How shall I put you among the children, and give you a pleasant land, a goodly heritage of the hosts of nations?' and I said, 'You shall call Me, My father; and shall not turn away from Me.'"

וְאָנֹכִ֣י אָמַ֗רְתִּי אֵ֚יךְ אֲשִׁיתֵ֣ךְ בַּבָּנִ֔ים וְאֶתֶּן־לָךְ֙ אֶ֣רֶץ חֶמְדָּ֔ה נַחֲלַ֥ת צְבִ֖י צִבְא֣וֹת גּוֹיִ֑ם וָאֹמַ֗ר אָבִי֙ תקראו תִּקְרְאִי־לִ֔י וּמֵאַחֲרַ֖י לֹ֥א תשובו תָשֽׁוּבִי׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ake֛n bּageda֥h 'ishshּa֖h mere'a֑hּ kּe֣n bּegadetּe֥m bּi֛y bּe֥yt yishsera'e֖l ne'um-yehvaֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"Surely as a wife treacherously departs from her husband, so have you dealt treacherously with Me, O house of Israel," says the LORD.

אָכֵ֛ן בָּגְדָ֥ה אִשָּׁ֖ה מֵרֵעָ֑הּ כֵּ֣ן בְּגַדְתֶּ֥ם בִּ֛י בֵּ֥ית יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל נְאֻם־יְהוָֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): q֚ol 'al-shshepayi֣ym nishshema֔ bּeki֥y tachanune֖y bּene֣y yishsera'e֑l kּi֤y he'eu֙ 'et-dּarekּa֔m shshakech֖u 'et-yehova֥h 'eloheyheֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)A voice was heard upon the high places, weeping and supplications of the children of Israel: for they have perverted their way, and they have forgotten the LORD their God.

ק֚וֹל עַל־שְׁפָיִ֣ים נִשְׁמָ֔ע בְּכִ֥י תַחֲנוּנֵ֖י בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל כִּ֤י הֶעֱוּוּ֙ אֶת־דַּרְכָּ֔ם שָׁכְח֖וּ אֶת־יְהֹוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֵיהֶֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): shsh֚ubu bּani֣ym shshobabi֔ym 'erepּa֖h meshshuboֽteyke֑m hinenu֙ 'ata֣nu la֔ke kּi֥y 'atּa֖h yehova֥h 'eloheֽynu׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"Return, you backsliding children, and I will heal your backslidings." "Behold, we come to You; for You are the LORD our God."

שׁ֚וּבוּ בָּנִ֣ים שׁוֹבָבִ֔ים אֶרְפָּ֖ה מְשׁוּבֹֽתֵיכֶ֑ם הִנְנוּ֙ אָתָ֣נוּ לָ֔ךְ כִּ֥י אַתָּ֖ה יְהֹוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֵֽינוּ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ake֥n lashshּe֛qer migּeba'֖ot ham֣on hari֑ym 'aken֙ bּayhova֣h 'elohe֔ynu tּeshshu'a֖t yishsera'eֽl׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"Truly in vain is salvation hoped for from the hills, and from the multitude of mountains: truly in the LORD our God is the salvation of Israel."

אָכֵ֥ן לַשֶּׁ֛קֶר מִגְּבָע֖וֹת הָמ֣וֹן הָרִ֑ים אָכֵן֙ בַּיהֹוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֵ֔ינוּ תְּשׁוּעַ֖ת יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vehabּo֗shshet 'aֽkela֛h 'et-yegi֥y'a 'abote֖ynu minּe'ure֑ynu 'et-tzo'nam֙ ve'et-bּeqara֔m 'et-bּeneyhe֖m ve'et-bּenoteyheֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"For shame has devoured the labour of our fathers from our youth; their flocks and their herds, their sons and their daughters."

וְהַבֹּ֗שֶׁת אָֽכְלָ֛ה אֶת־יְגִ֥יעַ אֲבוֹתֵ֖ינוּ מִנְּעוּרֵ֑ינוּ אֶת־צֹאנָם֙ וְאֶת־בְּקָרָ֔ם אֶת־בְּנֵיהֶ֖ם וְאֶת־בְּנוֹתֵיהֶֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): nishshekּeba֣h bּebashshetּe֗nu uֽtekasּenu֮ kּelimּatenu֒ kּiy֩ layhva֨h 'elohe֜ynu chata֗'nu 'ana֨chenu֙ va'abote֔ynu minּe'ure֖ynu ve'ad-hayּ֣om hazּe֑h velo֣ shshama֔'enu bּeq֖ol yehova֥h 'eloheֽynu׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)"We lie down in our shame, and our confusion covers us: for we have sinned against the LORD our God, we and our fathers, from our youth even to this day, and have not obeyed the voice of the LORD our God."

נִשְׁכְּבָ֣ה בְּבָשְׁתֵּ֗נוּ וּֽתְכַסֵּנוּ֮ כְּלִמָּתֵנוּ֒ כִּי֩ לַיהוָ֨ה אֱלֹהֵ֜ינוּ חָטָ֗אנוּ אֲנַ֨חְנוּ֙ וַאֲבוֹתֵ֔ינוּ מִנְּעוּרֵ֖ינוּ וְעַד־הַיּ֣וֹם הַזֶּ֑ה וְלֹ֣א שָׁמַ֔עְנוּ בְּק֖וֹל יְהֹוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֵֽינוּ׃ס
