Chapter 2
1
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehi֣y hayּ֔om vayּabo֨'u֙ bּene֣y haֽ'elohi֔ym lehiteyatzּe֖b 'al-yehva֑h vayּab֤o gaֽm-hashsּatan֙ bּetoka֔m lehiteyatzּe֖b 'al-yehvaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)On another day the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and the adversary also came among them to present himself.

וַיְהִ֣י הַיּ֔וֹם וַיָּבֹ֨אוּ֙ בְּנֵ֣י הָֽאֱלֹהִ֔ים לְהִתְיַצֵּ֖ב עַל־יְהוָ֑ה וַיָּב֤וֹא גַֽם־הַשָּׂטָן֙ בְּתֹכָ֔ם לְהִתְיַצֵּ֖ב עַל־יְהוָֽה׃

2
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֤'mer yehvah֙ 'el-hashsּata֔n 'e֥y mizּe֖h tּabo֑ vayּa֨'an hashsּata֤n 'et-yehvah֙ vayּo'ma֔r mishshּu֣t bּa'a֔retz umehitehalּe֖ke bּaֽhּ׃
Edified Edition (EDE)And the LORD said to the adversary, "Where have you come from?" He answered, "From roaming through the earth and walking back and forth in it."

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר יְהוָה֙ אֶל־הַשָּׂטָ֔ן אֵ֥י מִזֶּ֖ה תָּבֹ֑א וַיַּ֨עַן הַשָּׂטָ֤ן אֶת־יְהוָה֙ וַיֹּאמַ֔ר מִשֻּׁ֣ט בָּאָ֔רֶץ וּמֵהִתְהַלֵּ֖ךְ בָּֽהּ׃

3
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֨'mer yehva֜h 'el-hashsּata֗n hashsa֣metּa libּeka֮ 'el-'abedּi֣y 'iyּob֒ kּiy֩ 'e֨yn kּamo֜hu bּa'a֗retz 'i֣yshsh tּa֧m veyashsha֛r yere֥ 'elohi֖ym vesa֣r mera֑ ve'ode֨nּu֙ machazi֣yq bּetumּat֔o vatּesiyte֥niy b֖o lebalּe'֥o chinּaֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then the LORD said to the adversary, "Have you considered my servant Job? There is no one on earth like him; he is blameless and upright, a man who fears God and shuns evil. He still maintains his integrity, even though you incited me against him to ruin him without any reason."

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר יְהוָ֜ה אֶל־הַשָּׂטָ֗ן הֲשַׂ֣מְתָּ לִבְּךָ֮ אֶל־עַבְדִּ֣י אִיּוֹב֒ כִּי֩ אֵ֨ין כָּמֹ֜הוּ בָּאָ֗רֶץ אִ֣ישׁ תָּ֧ם וְיָשָׁ֛ר יְרֵ֥א אֱלֹהִ֖ים וְסָ֣ר מֵרָ֑ע וְעֹדֶ֨נּוּ֙ מַחֲזִ֣יק בְּתֻמָּת֔וֹ וַתְּסִיתֵ֥נִי ב֖וֹ לְבַלְּע֥וֹ חִנָּֽם׃

4
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֧'an hashsּata֛n 'et-yehva֖h vayּo'ma֑r '֣or bּe'ad-'֗or vekol֙ 'ashshe֣r la'i֔yshsh yitּe֖n bּe'a֥d napeshshֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"Skin for skin!" the adversary replied. "A man will give everything he has for his own life."

וַיַּ֧עַן הַשָּׂטָ֛ן אֶת־יְהוָ֖ה וַיֹּאמַ֑ר ע֣וֹר בְּעַד־ע֗וֹר וְכֹל֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר לָאִ֔ישׁ יִתֵּ֖ן בְּעַ֥ד נַפְשֽׁוֹ׃

5
Phonetic (Hebrew): ulam֙ shsheֽlaֽch-na֣ yaֽdeka֔ vega֥ 'el-'atzem֖o ve'el-bּeshsar֑o 'im-lo֥ 'el-pּane֖yka yebarakeֽkּa׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"But now stretch out your hand and strike his flesh and bones, and he will surely curse you to your face."

אוּלָם֙ שְֽׁלַֽח־נָ֣א יָֽדְךָ֔ וְגַ֥ע אֶל־עַצְמ֖וֹ וְאֶל־בְּשָׂר֑וֹ אִם־לֹ֥א אֶל־פָּנֶ֖יךָ יְבָרֲכֶֽךָּ׃

6
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֧'mer yehva֛h 'el-hashsּata֖n hinּ֣o beyade֑ka 'a֖ke 'et-napeshsh֥o shshemoֽr׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The LORD said to the adversary, "Very well, he is in your hands, but you must spare his life."

וַיֹּ֧אמֶר יְהוָ֛ה אֶל־הַשָּׂטָ֖ן הִנּ֣וֹ בְיָדֶ֑ךָ אַ֖ךְ אֶת־נַפְשׁ֥וֹ שְׁמֹֽר׃

7
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּetze'֙ hashsּata֔n me'e֖t pּene֣y yehva֑h vayּa֤ke 'et-'iyּob֙ bּishshechi֣yn ra֔ mikּa֥p ragel֖o 'd ve'a֥d qadeqodֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)So the adversary went out from the presence of the LORD and afflicted Job with painful boils from the soles of his feet to the crown of his head.

וַיֵּצֵא֙ הַשָּׂטָ֔ן מֵאֵ֖ת פְּנֵ֣י יְהוָ֑ה וַיַּ֤ךְ אֶת־אִיּוֹב֙ בִּשְׁחִ֣ין רָ֔ע מִכַּ֥ף רַגְל֖וֹ עד וְעַ֥ד קָדְקֳדֽוֹ׃

8
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiֽqּaֽch-l֣o che֔reshs lehitegּare֖d bּ֑o veh֖u yoshshe֥b bּetoke-ha'eֽper׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then Job took a piece of broken pottery and scraped himself with it as he sat among the ashes.

וַיִּֽקַּֽח־ל֣וֹ חֶ֔רֶשׂ לְהִתְגָּרֵ֖ד בּ֑וֹ וְה֖וּא יֹשֵׁ֥ב בְּתוֹךְ־הָאֵֽפֶר׃

9
Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּo֤'mer lo֙ 'ishshetּ֔o 'odeka֖ machazi֣yq bּetumּate֑ka bּare֥ke 'elohi֖ym vamuֽt׃
Edified Edition (EDE)His wife said to him, "Are you still maintaining your integrity? Curse God and die!"

וַתֹּ֤אמֶר לוֹ֙ אִשְׁתּ֔וֹ עֹדְךָ֖ מַחֲזִ֣יק בְּתֻמָּתֶ֑ךָ בָּרֵ֥ךְ אֱלֹהִ֖ים וָמֻֽת׃

10
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֣'mer 'ele֗yha kּedabּe֞r 'acha֤t hanּebalot֙ tּedabּe֔riy gּa֣m 'et-hatּ֗ob neqabּel֙ me'e֣t ha'elohi֔ym ve'et-hara֖ lo֣ neqabּe֑l bּekal-zo֛'t lo'-chata֥ 'iyּ֖ob bּishsepataֽyv׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)He replied, "You are talking like a foolish woman. Shall we accept good from God, and not trouble?" In all this, Job did not sin in what he said.

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֵלֶ֗יהָ כְּדַבֵּ֞ר אַחַ֤ת הַנְּבָלוֹת֙ תְּדַבֵּ֔רִי גַּ֣ם אֶת־הַטּ֗וֹב נְקַבֵּל֙ מֵאֵ֣ת הָאֱלֹהִ֔ים וְאֶת־הָרָ֖ע לֹ֣א נְקַבֵּ֑ל בְּכָל־זֹ֛את לֹא־חָטָ֥א אִיּ֖וֹב בִּשְׂפָתָֽיו׃פ

11
Phonetic (Hebrew): vaֽyּishsheme'֞u shshelo֣shshet ׀ re'e֣y 'iyּ֗ob 'e֣t kּal-hara'a֣h hazּo't֮ habּa֣'ah 'alayv֒ vayּabo֨'u֙ 'i֣yshsh mimּeqom֔o 'eliypa֤z hatּeymaniy֙ ubiledּa֣d hashshּuchi֔y vetzopa֖r hanּaֽ'amati֑y vayּiua'ad֣u yachedּa֔v lab֥o lanֽud-l֖o uֽlenachamֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)When Job’s three friends, Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite and Zophar the Naamathite, heard about all the troubles that had come upon him, they set out from their homes and met together by agreement to go and sympathize with him and comfort him.

וַֽיִּשְׁמְע֞וּ שְׁלֹ֣שֶׁת ׀ רֵעֵ֣י אִיּ֗וֹב אֵ֣ת כָּל־הָרָעָ֣ה הַזֹּאת֮ הַבָּ֣אָה עָלָיו֒ וַיָּבֹ֨אוּ֙ אִ֣ישׁ מִמְּקֹמ֔וֹ אֱלִיפַ֤ז הַתֵּימָנִי֙ וּבִלְדַּ֣ד הַשּׁוּחִ֔י וְצוֹפַ֖ר הַנַּֽעֲמָתִ֑י וַיִּוָּעֲד֣וּ יַחְדָּ֔ו לָב֥וֹא לָנֽוּד־ל֖וֹ וּֽלְנַחֲמֽוֹ׃

12
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּishse'֨u 'et-'eyneyhe֤m merachoq֙ velo֣ hikּiyru֔hu vayּishse'֥u qola֖m vayּibekּ֑u vaֽyּiqere'u֙ 'i֣yshsh me'il֔o vayּizereq֥u 'apa֛r 'al-ra'shsheyhe֖m hashshּamaֽyemah׃
Edified Edition (EDE)When they saw him from a distance, they could hardly recognise him; they began to weep aloud, and they tore their robes and sprinkled dust on their heads toward heaven.

וַיִּשְׂא֨וּ אֶת־עֵינֵיהֶ֤ם מֵרָחוֹק֙ וְלֹ֣א הִכִּירֻ֔הוּ וַיִּשְׂא֥וּ קוֹלָ֖ם וַיִּבְכּ֑וּ וַֽיִּקְרְעוּ֙ אִ֣ישׁ מְעִל֔וֹ וַיִּזְרְק֥וּ עָפָ֛ר עַל־רָאשֵׁיהֶ֖ם הַשָּׁמָֽיְמָה׃

13
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּeshsheb֤u 'itּo֙ la'a֔retz shshibe'a֥t yami֖ym veshshibe'a֣t leyl֑ot ve'eyn-dּobe֤r 'elayv֙ dּaba֔r kּi֣y ra'֔u kּiֽy-gada֥l hakּe'e֖b me'oֽd׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then they sat on the ground with him for seven days and seven nights. No one said a word to him, because they saw how great his suffering was.

וַיֵּשְׁב֤וּ אִתּוֹ֙ לָאָ֔רֶץ שִׁבְעַ֥ת יָמִ֖ים וְשִׁבְעַ֣ת לֵיל֑וֹת וְאֵין־דֹּבֵ֤ר אֵלָיו֙ דָּבָ֔ר כִּ֣י רָא֔וּ כִּֽי־גָדַ֥ל הַכְּאֵ֖ב מְאֹֽד׃
