Chapter 28

Phonetic (Hebrew): kּi֤y ye֣shsh lakּe֣sep motza֑ u֝maq֗om lazּaha֥b yazoֽqּu׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"There is a mine for silver and a place where gold is refined."

כִּ֤י יֵ֣שׁ לַכֶּ֣סֶף מוֹצָ֑א וּ֝מָק֗וֹם לַזָּהָ֥ב יָזֹֽקּוּ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): bּa֭rezel me'apa֣r yuqּa֑ch ve֝'e֗ben yatz֥uq nechushshaֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"Iron is taken from the earth, and copper is smelted from ore."

בַּ֭רְזֶל מֵעָפָ֣ר יֻקָּ֑ח וְ֝אֶ֗בֶן יָצ֥וּק נְחוּשָֽׁה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): qe֤tz ׀ shsa֤m lacho֗shsheke uֽlekal-tּa֭keliyt h֣u choqe֑r 'e֖ben 'o֣pel vetzalemaֽvet׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"Mortals put an end to the darkness; they search out the farthest recesses for ore in the blackest darkness."

קֵ֤ץ ׀ שָׂ֤ם לַחֹ֗שֶׁךְ וּֽלְכָל־תַּ֭כְלִית ה֣וּא חוֹקֵ֑ר אֶ֖בֶן אֹ֣פֶל וְצַלְמָֽוֶת׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): pּa֤ratz na֨chal ׀ meֽ'im-gּa֗r haֽnּishshekּachi֥ym minּiy-ra֑gel dּa֖lּu me'en֣oshsh naֽ'u׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"Far from human dwellings they cut a shaft, in places forgotten by the foot; far from other people they dangle and sway."

פָּ֤רַץ נַ֨חַל ׀ מֵֽעִם־גָּ֗ר הַֽנִּשְׁכָּחִ֥ים מִנִּי־רָ֑גֶל דַּ֖לּוּ מֵאֱנ֣וֹשׁ נָֽעוּ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): e֗retz mimּe֥nּah yeֽtze'-la֑chem ve֝tachetּe֗yha nehepּa֥ke kּemo-'eֽshsh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"The earth, from which food comes, is transformed below as by fire;"

אֶ֗רֶץ מִמֶּ֥נָּה יֵֽצֵא־לָ֑חֶם וְ֝תַחְתֶּ֗יהָ נֶהְפַּ֥ךְ כְּמוֹ־אֵֽשׁ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): meqom-sapּi֥yr 'abane֑yha ve'apero֖t zaha֣b lֽo׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"its rocks contain sapphires, and its dust contains gold."

מְקוֹם־סַפִּ֥יר אֲבָנֶ֑יהָ וְעַפְרֹ֖ת זָהָ֣ב לֽוֹ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): na֭tiyb loֽ'-yeda֣'o 'a֑yit velo֥ shshe֝zapa֗tּu 'e֣yn 'ayּaֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"No bird of prey knows that hidden path, no falcon’s eye has seen it."

נָ֭תִיב לֹֽא־יְדָ֣עוֹ עָ֑יִט וְלֹ֥א שְׁ֝זָפַ֗תּוּ עֵ֣ין אַיָּֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): loֽ'-hideriyku֥hu beney-shsha֑chatz loֽ'-'ada֖h 'ala֣yv shshaֽchal׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"Proud beasts do not set foot on it, and no lion prowls there."

לֹֽא־הִדְרִיכֻ֥הוּ בְנֵי־שָׁ֑חַץ לֹֽא־עָדָ֖ה עָלָ֣יו שָֽׁחַל׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): bּaֽ֭chalּamiyshsh shshala֣ch yad֑o hapa֖ke mishshּo֣reshsh hariֽym׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"The miner’s hand assaults the flinty rock and lays bare the roots of the mountains."

בַּֽ֭חַלָּמִישׁ שָׁלַ֣ח יָד֑וֹ הָפַ֖ךְ מִשֹּׁ֣רֶשׁ הָרִֽים׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): bּa֭tzּurot ye'ori֣ym bּiqּe֑'a vekal-ye֝qa֗r ra'ata֥h 'eynֽo׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"He tunnels through the rock; his eyes see all its treasures."

בַּ֭צּוּרוֹת יְאֹרִ֣ים בִּקֵּ֑עַ וְכָל־יְ֝קָ֗ר רָאֲתָ֥ה עֵינֽוֹ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): mi֭bּekiy nehar֣ot chibּe֑shsh ve֝ta'aluma֗hּ yo֣tzi 'ֽor׃p

Edified Edition (EDE)"He searches the sources of the rivers and brings hidden things to light."

מִ֭בְּכִי נְהָר֣וֹת חִבֵּ֑שׁ וְ֝תַעֲלֻמָ֗הּ יֹ֣צִא אֽוֹר׃פ

Phonetic (Hebrew): veֽ֭hachakemah me'a֣yin tּimּatze֑ ve'e֥y ze֝h meq֣om bּiynaֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"But where can wisdom be found? Where does understanding dwell?"

וְֽ֭הַחָכְמָה מֵאַ֣יִן תִּמָּצֵ֑א וְאֵ֥י זֶ֝ה מְק֣וֹם בִּינָֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): lo'-yada֣ 'en֣oshsh 'erekּa֑hּ velo֥ ti֝mּatze֗ bּe'e֣retz hֽachayּiֽym׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"No mortal comprehends its worth; it cannot be found in the land of the living."

לֹא־יָדַ֣ע אֱנ֣וֹשׁ עֶרְכָּ֑הּ וְלֹ֥א תִ֝מָּצֵ֗א בְּאֶ֣רֶץ הַֽחַיִּֽים׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): tּeh֣om 'a֭mar lo֣ biy-hi֑y veya֥m 'a֝ma֗r 'e֣yn 'imּadiֽy׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"The deep says, 'It is not in me'; the sea says, 'It is not with me.'"

תְּה֣וֹם אָ֭מַר לֹ֣א בִי־הִ֑יא וְיָ֥ם אָ֝מַ֗ר אֵ֣ין עִמָּדִֽי׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): lo'-yutּa֣n seg֣or tּachetּe֑yha velo֥ yi֝shshּaqe֗l kּe֣sep mechiyraֽhּ׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"It cannot be bought with the finest gold, nor can its price be weighed out in silver."

לֹא־יֻתַּ֣ן סְג֣וֹר תַּחְתֶּ֑יהָ וְלֹ֥א יִ֝שָּׁקֵ֗ל כֶּ֣סֶף מְחִירָֽהּ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): loֽ'-te֭sulּeh bּeke֣tem 'opi֑yr bּeshsho֖ham yaqa֣r vesapּiֽyr׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"It cannot be bought with the gold of Ophir, with precious onyx or lapis lazuli."

לֹֽא־תְ֭סֻלֶּה בְּכֶ֣תֶם אוֹפִ֑יר בְּשֹׁ֖הַם יָקָ֣ר וְסַפִּֽיר׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): lo'-ya'areke֣nּah za֭hab uzekoki֑yt utem֖urata֣hּ kּeliy-paֽz׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"Neither gold nor crystal can compare with it, nor can it be had for jewels of gold."

לֹא־יַעַרְכֶ֣נָּה זָ֭הָב וּזְכוֹכִ֑ית וּתְמ֖וּרָתָ֣הּ כְּלִי־פָֽז׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ra'm֣ot ve֭gabiyshsh lo֣ yizּake֑r ume֥shsheke cha֝kema֗h mipּeniyniֽym׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"Coral and crystal are not even to be mentioned; the price of wisdom is far beyond rubies."

רָאמ֣וֹת וְ֭גָבִישׁ לֹ֣א יִזָּכֵ֑ר וּמֶ֥שֶׁךְ חָ֝כְמָ֗ה מִפְּנִינִֽים׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): loֽ'-ya֭'arekenּah pּitedat-kּ֑ushsh bּeke֥tem ta֝h֗or lo֣ tesulּeֽh׃p

Edified Edition (EDE)"The topaz of Cush cannot compare with it; it cannot be bought with pure gold."

לֹֽא־יַ֭עַרְכֶנָּה פִּטְדַת־כּ֑וּשׁ בְּכֶ֥תֶם טָ֝ה֗וֹר לֹ֣א תְסֻלֶּֽה׃פ

Phonetic (Hebrew): veֽ֭hachakemah me'a֣yin tּab֑o ve'e֥y ze֝֗h meq֣om bּiynaֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"Where then does wisdom come from? Where does understanding dwell?"

וְֽ֭הַחָכְמָה מֵאַ֣יִן תָּב֑וֹא וְאֵ֥י זֶ֝֗ה מְק֣וֹם בִּינָֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): veֽ֭ne'elemah me'eyne֣y kal-cha֑y ume'֖op hashshּama֣yim nisetּaֽrah׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"It is hidden from the eyes of every living creature, concealed even from the birds in the sky."

וְֽ֭נֶעֶלְמָה מֵעֵינֵ֣י כָל־חָ֑י וּמֵע֖וֹף הַשָּׁמַ֣יִם נִסְתָּֽרָה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): abadּ֣on va֭mavet 'a֣mer֑u bּe֝'azene֗ynu shshama֥'enu shshime'aֽhּ׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"Destruction and Death say, 'Only a rumour of it has reached our ears.'"

אֲבַדּ֣וֹן וָ֭מָוֶת אָ֣מְר֑וּ בְּ֝אָזְנֵ֗ינוּ שָׁמַ֥עְנוּ שִׁמְעָֽהּ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): e֭lohiym hebi֣yn dּarekּa֑hּ ve֝h֗u yada֥ 'et-meqomaֽhּ׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"God understands the way to it and he alone knows where it dwells,"

אֱ֭לֹהִים הֵבִ֣ין דַּרְכָּ֑הּ וְ֝ה֗וּא יָדַ֥ע אֶת־מְקוֹמָֽהּ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): kּiy-h֭u liqetzot-ha'a֣retz yabּi֑yt tּa֖chat kּal-hashshּama֣yim yire'eֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"for he views the ends of the earth and sees everything under the heavens."

כִּי־ה֭וּא לִקְצוֹת־הָאָ֣רֶץ יַבִּ֑יט תַּ֖חַת כָּל־הַשָּׁמַ֣יִם יִרְאֶֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): la'ashs֣ot lar֣ucha mishsheqa֑l u֝ma֗yim tּikּe֥n bּemidּaֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"When he established the force of the wind and measured out the waters,"

לַעֲשׂ֣וֹת לָר֣וּחַ מִשְׁקָ֑ל וּ֝מַ֗יִם תִּכֵּ֥ן בְּמִדָּֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): bּa'ashsot֣o lamּata֣r cho֑q ve֝de֗reke lachazi֥yz qolֽot׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"when he made a decree for the rain and a path for the thunderstorm,"

בַּעֲשֹׂת֣וֹ לַמָּטָ֣ר חֹ֑ק וְ֝דֶ֗רֶךְ לַחֲזִ֥יז קֹלֽוֹת׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): a֣z ra֭'ahּ vaֽyesapּera֑hּ he֝kiyna֗hּ vegam-chaqaraֽhּ׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"then he looked at wisdom and appraised it; he confirmed it and tested it."

אָ֣ז רָ֭אָהּ וַֽיְסַפְּרָ֑הּ הֱ֝כִינָ֗הּ וְגַם־חֲקָרָֽהּ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֤'mer ׀ laֽ'ada֗m he֤n yire'a֣t 'a֭donay hi֣y chakema֑h ves֖ur mera֣ bּiynaֽh׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)"And he said to the human race, 'The fear of the Lord, that is wisdom, and to shun evil is understanding.'"

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר ׀ לָֽאָדָ֗ם הֵ֤ן יִרְאַ֣ת אֲ֭דֹנָי הִ֣יא חָכְמָ֑ה וְס֖וּר מֵרָ֣ע בִּינָֽה׃ס
