Chapter 39

Phonetic (Hebrew): hayada֗'etּa 'e֭t le֣det ya'aley-sa֑la chole֖l 'ayּal֣ot tּishshemoֽr׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"Do you know when the wild goats give birth? Do you watch when the doe bears her fawn?"

הֲיָדַ֗עְתָּ עֵ֭ת לֶ֣דֶת יַעֲלֵי־סָ֑לַע חֹלֵ֖ל אַיָּל֣וֹת תִּשְׁמֹֽר׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): tּisepּo֣r yerachi֣ym tּemalּe֑'nah ve֝yada֗'etּa 'e֣t lidetּaֽnah׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"Do you count the months till they bear? Do you know the time they give birth?"

תִּסְפֹּ֣ר יְרָחִ֣ים תְּמַלֶּ֑אנָה וְ֝יָדַ֗עְתָּ עֵ֣ת לִדְתָּֽנָה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): tּi֭kera'enah yaledeyhe֣n tּepalּa֑chenah chebeleyhe֥m tּeshshalּaֽchenah׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"They crouch down and bring forth their young; their labour pains are over."

תִּ֭כְרַעְנָה יַלְדֵיהֶ֣ן תְּפַלַּ֑חְנָה חֶבְלֵיהֶ֥ם תְּשַׁלַּֽחְנָה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): yachelem֣u be֭neyhem yirebּ֣u babּa֑r ya֝tze'֗u velo'-shsha֥bu laֽmo׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"Their young thrive and grow strong in the wild; they leave and do not return."

יַחְלְמ֣וּ בְ֭נֵיהֶם יִרְבּ֣וּ בַבָּ֑ר יָ֝צְא֗וּ וְלֹא־שָׁ֥בוּ לָֽמוֹ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): miֽy-shshilּa֣ch pּe֣re chapeshshi֑y umoser֥ot 'a֝r֗od mi֣y pitּeֽcha׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"Who let the wild donkey go free? Who untied its ropes?"

מִֽי־שִׁלַּ֣ח פֶּ֣רֶא חָפְשִׁ֑י וּמֹסְר֥וֹת עָ֝ר֗וֹד מִ֣י פִתֵּֽחַ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ashsher-shsa֣metּiy 'araba֣h beyt֑o uֽmishshekּenota֥yv meleֽchah׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"I gave it the wasteland as its home, the salt flats as its habitat."

אֲשֶׁר־שַׂ֣מְתִּי עֲרָבָ֣ה בֵית֑וֹ וּֽמִשְׁכְּנוֹתָ֥יו מְלֵֽחָה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): yi֭shsechaq laham֣on qireya֑h tּeshshu'֥ot n֝oge֗shs lo֣ yishshemaֽ'׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"It laughs at the commotion in the town; it does not hear a driver’s shout."

יִ֭שְׂחַק לַהֲמ֣וֹן קִרְיָ֑ה תְּשֻׁא֥וֹת נ֝וֹגֵ֗שׂ לֹ֣א יִשְׁמָֽע׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): yet֣ur hari֣ym mire'e֑hu ve'acha֖r kּal-yar֣oq yiderֽoshsh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"It ranges the hills for its pasture and searches for any green thing."

יְת֣וּר הָרִ֣ים מִרְעֵ֑הוּ וְאַחַ֖ר כָּל־יָר֣וֹק יִדְרֽוֹשׁ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): hayo֣'beh rּe֣ym 'abede֑ka 'im-ya֝li֗yn 'al-'abuseֽka׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"Will the wild ox consent to serve you? Will it stay by your manger at night?"

הֲיֹ֣אבֶה רֵּ֣ים עָבְדֶ֑ךָ אִם־יָ֝לִ֗ין עַל־אֲבוּסֶֽךָ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): haֽtiqeshshar-re֭ym bּete֣lem 'abot֑o 'im-yeshsadּe֖d 'amaqi֣ym 'achareֽyka׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"Can you hold it to the furrow with a harness? Will it till the valleys behind you?"

הֲֽתִקְשָׁר־רֵ֭ים בְּתֶ֣לֶם עֲבֹת֑וֹ אִם־יְשַׂדֵּ֖ד עֲמָקִ֣ים אַחֲרֶֽיךָ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): haֽtibetach-bּ֭o kּiy-ra֣b kּoch֑o veta'azo֖b 'ela֣yv yegiy'eֽka׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"Will you rely on it for its great strength? Will you leave your heavy work to it?"

הֲֽתִבְטַח־בּ֭וֹ כִּי־רַ֣ב כֹּח֑וֹ וְתַעֲזֹ֖ב אֵלָ֣יו יְגִיעֶֽךָ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): hata'ami֣yn bּ֭o kּiy-yshvb yashshi֣yb zare'e֑ka veֽgareneka֥ ye'esoֽp׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"Can you trust it to haul in your grain and bring it to your threshing-floor?"

הֲתַאֲמִ֣ין בּ֭וֹ כִּי־ישוב יָשִׁ֣יב זַרְעֶ֑ךָ וְֽגָרְנְךָ֥ יֶאֱסֹֽף׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): kּenap-renani֥ym ne'ela֑sah 'im-'e֝bera֗h chasiyda֥h venotzaֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"The wings of the ostrich flap joyfully, though they cannot compare with the feathers and plumage of the stork."

כְּנַף־רְנָנִ֥ים נֶעֱלָ֑סָה אִם־אֶ֝בְרָ֗ה חֲסִידָ֥ה וְנֹצָֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): kּiֽy-ta'azo֣b la'a֣retz bּetze֑yha veֽ'al-'apa֥r tּechamּeֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"She lays her eggs on the ground and lets them warm in the sand,"

כִּֽי־תַעֲזֹ֣ב לָאָ֣רֶץ בֵּצֶ֑יהָ וְֽעַל־עָפָ֥ר תְּחַמֵּֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): va֭tּishshekּach kּiy-re֣gel tּezure֑ha vechayּa֖t hashsּade֣h tּedushsheֽha׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"unmindful that a foot may crush them, that some wild animal may trample them."

וַ֭תִּשְׁכַּח כִּי־רֶ֣גֶל תְּזוּרֶ֑הָ וְחַיַּ֖ת הַשָּׂדֶ֣ה תְּדוּשֶֽׁהָ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): hiqeshshi֣ycha bּane֣yha lּelo'-la֑hּ leri֖yq yegiy'a֣hּ bּeliy-paֽchad׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"She treats her young harshly, as if they were not hers; she cares not that her labour was in vain,"

הִקְשִׁ֣יחַ בָּנֶ֣יהָ לְּלֹא־לָ֑הּ לְרִ֖יק יְגִיעָ֣הּ בְּלִי־פָֽחַד׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): kּiֽy-hishshּa֣hּ 'el֣ohּa chakema֑h velo'-cha֥laq la֝֗hּ bּabּiynaֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"for God did not endow her with wisdom or give her a share of good sense."

כִּֽי־הִשָּׁ֣הּ אֱל֣וֹהַּ חָכְמָ֑ה וְלֹא־חָ֥לַק לָ֝֗הּ בַּבִּינָֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): kּa֭'et bּamּar֣om tּameri֑y tּiֽshsecha֥q la֝sּ֗us uleroֽkebֽo׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"Yet when she spreads her feathers to run, she laughs at horse and rider."

כָּ֭עֵת בַּמָּר֣וֹם תַּמְרִ֑יא תִּֽשְׂחַ֥ק לַ֝סּ֗וּס וּלְרֹֽכְבֽוֹ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): hatitּe֣n lasּ֣us gּebura֑h hatalebּi֖yshsh tzaua'r֣o ra'emaֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"Do you give the horse its strength or clothe its neck with a flowing mane?"

הֲתִתֵּ֣ן לַסּ֣וּס גְּבוּרָ֑ה הֲתַלְבִּ֖ישׁ צַוָּאר֣וֹ רַעְמָֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): heֽ֭tare'iyshshenּu kּa'arebּe֑h h֖od nacher֣o 'eymaֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"Do you make it leap like a locust, striking terror with its proud snorting?"

הְֽ֭תַרְעִישֶׁנּוּ כָּאַרְבֶּ֑ה ה֖וֹד נַחְר֣וֹ אֵימָֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): yachepּer֣u ba֭'emeq veyashsi֣yshs bּeko֑cha ye֝tze֗ liqera't-naֽshsheq׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"It paws fiercely, rejoicing in its strength, and charges into the fray."

יַחְפְּר֣וּ בָ֭עֵמֶק וְיָשִׂ֣ישׂ בְּכֹ֑חַ יֵ֝צֵ֗א לִקְרַאת־נָֽשֶׁק׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): yishsecha֣q le֭pachad velo֣ yecha֑t veloֽ'-ya֝shsh֗ub mipּeney-chaֽreb׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"It laughs at fear, afraid of nothing; it does not shy away from the sword."

יִשְׂחַ֣ק לְ֭פַחַד וְלֹ֣א יֵחָ֑ת וְלֹֽא־יָ֝שׁ֗וּב מִפְּנֵי־חָֽרֶב׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): a֭layv tּirene֣h 'ashshepּa֑h la֖hab chani֣yt vekiydֽon׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"The quiver rattles against its side, along with the flashing spear and lance."

עָ֭לָיו תִּרְנֶ֣ה אַשְׁפָּ֑ה לַ֖הַב חֲנִ֣ית וְכִידֽוֹן׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): bּera֣'ashsh ve֭rogez yegamּe'-'a֑retz veloֽ'-ya֝'ami֗yn kּiy-q֥ol shshopaֽr׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"In frenzied excitement it eats up the ground; it cannot stand still when the trumpet sounds."

בְּרַ֣עַשׁ וְ֭רֹגֶז יְגַמֶּא־אָ֑רֶץ וְלֹֽא־יַ֝אֲמִ֗ין כִּי־ק֥וֹל שׁוֹפָֽר׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): bּede֤y shshopa֨r ׀ yo֘'ma֤r he'a֗ch uֽ֭merachoq yari֣ycha milechama֑h ra֥'am shsa֝riym uteru'aֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"At the blast of the trumpet it snorts, 'Aha!' It catches the scent of battle from afar, the shout of commanders and the battle cry."

בְּדֵ֤י שֹׁפָ֨ר ׀ יֹ֘אמַ֤ר הֶאָ֗ח וּֽ֭מֵרָחוֹק יָרִ֣יחַ מִלְחָמָ֑ה רַ֥עַם שָׂ֝רִים וּתְרוּעָֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): haֽ֭mibּiyna֣teka yaֽ'aber-ne֑tz yipero֖shs knpv kּenapa֣yv leteymaֽn׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"Does the hawk take flight by your wisdom and spread its wings toward the south?"

הֲֽ֭מִבִּינָ֣תְךָ יַֽאֲבֶר־נֵ֑ץ יִפְרֹ֖שׂ כנפו כְּנָפָ֣יו לְתֵימָֽן׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): im-'al-pּi֭yka yagebּi֣yhּa na֑shsher ve֝ki֗y yari֥ym qinּֽo׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"Does the eagle soar at your command and build its nest on high?"

אִם־עַל־פִּ֭יךָ יַגְבִּ֣יהַּ נָ֑שֶׁר וְ֝כִ֗י יָרִ֥ים קִנּֽוֹ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): se֣la yi֭shshekּon veyitelona֑n 'aֽl-shshen-se֝֗la umetzudaֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"It dwells on a cliff and stays there at night; a rocky fortress is its stronghold."

סֶ֣לַע יִ֭שְׁכֹּן וְיִתְלֹנָ֑ן עַֽל־שֶׁן־סֶ֝֗לַע וּמְצוּדָֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): mishshּa֥m chaֽpar-'o֑kel le֝merach֗oq 'eyna֥yv yabּiֽytu׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"From there it looks for food; its eyes detect it from afar."

מִשָּׁ֥ם חָֽפַר־אֹ֑כֶל לְ֝מֵרָח֗וֹק עֵינָ֥יו יַבִּֽיטוּ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): v'prchv ve'eperocha֥yv ye'ale'u-da֑m uba'ashshe֥r cha֝lali֗ym shsha֣m hֽu'׃p

Edified Edition (EDE)"Its young feast on blood, and where the slain are, there it is."

ואפרחו וְאֶפְרֹחָ֥יו יְעַלְעוּ־דָ֑ם וּבַאֲשֶׁ֥ר חֲ֝לָלִ֗ים שָׁ֣ם הֽוּא׃פ
