Chapter 42
1
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֖'an 'iyּ֥ob 'et-yehva֗h vayּo'maֽr׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then Job replied to the LORD:

וַיַּ֖עַן אִיּ֥וֹב אֶת־יְהוָ֗ה וַיֹּאמַֽר׃

2
Phonetic (Hebrew): yd't ya֭da'etּiy kּiy-ko֣l tּuka֑l velo'-yibּatze֖r mimּeka֣ mezimּaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"I know that you can do all things; no purpose of yours can be thwarted."

ידעת יָ֭דַעְתִּי כִּי־כֹ֣ל תּוּכָ֑ל וְלֹא־יִבָּצֵ֖ר מִמְּךָ֣ מְזִמָּֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): mi֤y ze֨h ׀ ma'eli֥ym 'etza֗h bּeֽli֫y da֥'at lake֣n hi֭gּadetּiy velo֣ 'abi֑yn nipela'֥ot mi֝mּe֗nּiy velo֣ 'edaֽ'׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"You asked, 'Who is this that obscures my plans without knowledge?' Surely I spoke of things I did not understand, things too wonderful for me to know."

מִ֤י זֶ֨ה ׀ מַעְלִ֥ים עֵצָ֗ה בְּֽלִ֫י דָ֥עַת לָכֵ֣ן הִ֭גַּדְתִּי וְלֹ֣א אָבִ֑ין נִפְלָא֥וֹת מִ֝מֶּ֗נִּי וְלֹ֣א אֵדָֽע׃

4
Phonetic (Hebrew): shsheֽmaֽ'-na֭ ve'anoki֣y 'adabּe֑r 'e֝shshe'aleka֗ vehodiy'eֽniy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"You said, 'Listen now, and I will speak; I will question you, and you shall answer me.'"

שְֽׁמַֽע־נָ֭א וְאָנֹכִ֣י אֲדַבֵּ֑ר אֶ֝שְׁאָלְךָ֗ וְהוֹדִיעֵֽנִי׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): leshsheֽma'-'o֥zen shshema'etּi֑yka ve֝'atּa֗h 'eyni֥y ra'aֽteka׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"My ears had heard of you but now my eyes have seen you."

לְשֵֽׁמַע־אֹ֥זֶן שְׁמַעְתִּ֑יךָ וְ֝עַתָּ֗ה עֵינִ֥י רָאָֽתְךָ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): al-kּe֭n 'eme'a֣s venicha֑metּiy 'al-'apa֥r va'eֽper׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)"Therefore I despise [1] myself and repent in dust and ashes."

עַל־כֵּ֭ן אֶמְאַ֣ס וְנִחַ֑מְתִּי עַל־עָפָ֥ר וָאֵֽפֶר׃פ

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehi֗y 'acha֨r dּibּe֧r yehva֛h 'et-hadּebari֥ym ha'e֖lּeh 'el-'iyּ֑ob vayּo֨'mer yehva֜h 'el-'eliypa֣z hatּeֽymani֗y chara֨h 'apּi֤y beka֙ ubishshene֣y re'e֔yka kּi֠y lo֣ dibּaretּe֥m 'ela֛y nekona֖h kּe'abedּi֥y 'iyּֽob׃
Edified Edition (EDE)After the LORD had said these things to Job, he said to Eliphaz the Temanite, "I am angry with you and your two friends, because you have not spoken the truth about me, as my servant Job has."

וַיְהִ֗י אַחַ֨ר דִּבֶּ֧ר יְהוָ֛ה אֶת־הַדְּבָרִ֥ים הָאֵ֖לֶּה אֶל־אִיּ֑וֹב וַיֹּ֨אמֶר יְהוָ֜ה אֶל־אֱלִיפַ֣ז הַתֵּֽימָנִ֗י חָרָ֨ה אַפִּ֤י בְךָ֙ וּבִשְׁנֵ֣י רֵעֶ֔יךָ כִּ֠י לֹ֣א דִבַּרְתֶּ֥ם אֵלַ֛י נְכוֹנָ֖ה כְּעַבְדִּ֥י אִיּֽוֹב׃

8
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'atּa֡h qechֽu-lake֣m shshibe'aֽh-pariym֩ veshshibe'a֨h 'eyli֜ym ulek֣u ׀ 'el-'abedּi֣y 'iyּ֗ob veha'aliyte֤m 'olah֙ bּֽa'adeke֔m ve'iyּ֣ob 'abedּi֔y yitepּalּe֖l 'aleyke֑m kּi֧y 'im-pּana֣yv 'eshsּa֗ lebiletּi֞y 'ashs֤ot 'imּakem֙ nebala֔h kּi֠y lo֣ dibּaretּe֥m 'ela֛y nekona֖h kּe'abedּi֥y 'iyּֽob׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"So now take seven bullocks and seven rams and go to my servant Job and sacrifice a burnt offering for yourselves. My servant Job will pray for you, and I will accept his prayer and not deal with you according to your folly. You have not spoken the truth about me, as my servant Job has."

וְעַתָּ֡ה קְחֽוּ־לָכֶ֣ם שִׁבְעָֽה־פָרִים֩ וְשִׁבְעָ֨ה אֵילִ֜ים וּלְכ֣וּ ׀ אֶל־עַבְדִּ֣י אִיּ֗וֹב וְהַעֲלִיתֶ֤ם עוֹלָה֙ בַּֽעַדְכֶ֔ם וְאִיּ֣וֹב עַבְדִּ֔י יִתְפַּלֵּ֖ל עֲלֵיכֶ֑ם כִּ֧י אִם־פָּנָ֣יו אֶשָּׂ֗א לְבִלְתִּ֞י עֲשׂ֤וֹת עִמָּכֶם֙ נְבָלָ֔ה כִּ֠י לֹ֣א דִבַּרְתֶּ֥ם אֵלַ֛י נְכוֹנָ֖ה כְּעַבְדִּ֥י אִיּֽוֹב׃

9
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּeleku֩ 'eliypa֨z hatּeֽymani֜y ubiledּa֣d hashshּuchi֗y tzopar֙ hanּa֣'amati֔y vaֽyּa'ashs֔u kּa'ashshe֛r dּibּe֥r 'aleyhe֖m yehva֑h vayּishsּa֥ yehva֖h 'et-pּene֥y 'iyּֽob׃
Edified Edition (EDE)So Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite and Zophar the Naamathite did what the LORD told them; and the LORD accepted Job’s prayer.

וַיֵּלְכוּ֩ אֱלִיפַ֨ז הַתֵּֽימָנִ֜י וּבִלְדַּ֣ד הַשּׁוּחִ֗י צֹפַר֙ הַנַּ֣עֲמָתִ֔י וַֽיַּעֲשׂ֔וּ כַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר דִּבֶּ֥ר אֲלֵיהֶ֖ם יְהוָ֑ה וַיִּשָּׂ֥א יְהוָ֖ה אֶת־פְּנֵ֥י אִיּֽוֹב׃

10
Phonetic (Hebrew): vaֽyhva֗h shsha֚b 'et-shbyt shsheb֣ut 'iyּ֔ob bּehiֽtepּaֽlel֖o bּe'a֣d re'e֑hu va֧yּosep yehva֛h 'et-kּal-'ashshe֥r le'iyּ֖ob lemishsheneֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)After Job had prayed for his friends, the LORD restored his fortunes and gave him twice as much as he had before.

וַֽיהוָ֗ה שָׁ֚ב אֶת־שבית שְׁב֣וּת אִיּ֔וֹב בְּהִֽתְפַּֽלְל֖וֹ בְּעַ֣ד רֵעֵ֑הוּ וַ֧יֹּסֶף יְהוָ֛ה אֶת־כָּל־אֲשֶׁ֥ר לְאִיּ֖וֹב לְמִשְׁנֶֽה׃

11
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּabo֣'u 'e֠layv kּal-'echa֨yv vekal-'chytyv 'acheyota֜yv vekal-yode'a֣yv lepani֗ym vayּo'kel֨u 'imּ֣o lechem֮ bּebeyto֒ vayּanu֤du lo֙ vayenacham֣u 'ot֔o 'a֚l kּal-ha֣ra'a֔h 'ashsher-hebi֥y yehva֖h 'ala֑yv vayּitּenu-l֗o 'i֚yshsh qeshsiyta֣h 'echa֔t ve'i֕yshsh ne֥zem zaha֖b 'echaֽd׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)All his brothers and sisters and everyone who had known him before came and ate with him in his house. They comforted and consoled him over all the trouble the LORD had brought on him, and each one gave him a piece of silver and a gold ring.

וַיָּבֹ֣אוּ אֵ֠לָיו כָּל־אֶחָ֨יו וְכָל־אחיתיו אַחְיוֹתָ֜יו וְכָל־יֹדְעָ֣יו לְפָנִ֗ים וַיֹּאכְל֨וּ עִמּ֣וֹ לֶחֶם֮ בְּבֵיתוֹ֒ וַיָּנֻ֤דוּ לוֹ֙ וַיְנַחֲמ֣וּ אֹת֔וֹ עַ֚ל כָּל־הָ֣רָעָ֔ה אֲשֶׁר־הֵבִ֥יא יְהוָ֖ה עָלָ֑יו וַיִּתְּנוּ־ל֗וֹ אִ֚ישׁ קְשִׂיטָ֣ה אֶחָ֔ת וְאִ֕ישׁ נֶ֥זֶם זָהָ֖ב אֶחָֽד׃ס

12
Phonetic (Hebrew): vaֽyhva֗h bּera֛ke 'et-'achari֥yt 'iyּ֖ob mere'shshit֑o vaֽyehiy-l֡o 'arebּa'ah֩ 'ashsa֨r 'e֜lep tzo֗'n veshshe֤shshet 'alapiym֙ gּemalּi֔ym ve'eֽlep-tze֥med bּaqa֖r ve'e֥lep 'atonֽot׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The LORD blessed the latter part of Job’s life more than the former. He had fourteen thousand sheep, six thousand camels, a thousand yoke of oxen and a thousand donkeys.

וַֽיהוָ֗ה בֵּרַ֛ךְ אֶת־אַחֲרִ֥ית אִיּ֖וֹב מֵרֵאשִׁת֑וֹ וַֽיְהִי־ל֡וֹ אַרְבָּעָה֩ עָשָׂ֨ר אֶ֜לֶף צֹ֗אן וְשֵׁ֤שֶׁת אֲלָפִים֙ גְּמַלִּ֔ים וְאֶֽלֶף־צֶ֥מֶד בָּקָ֖ר וְאֶ֥לֶף אֲתוֹנֽוֹת׃

13
Phonetic (Hebrew): vaֽyehiy-l֛o shshibe'a֥nah bani֖ym veshshal֥oshsh bּanֽot׃
Edified Edition (EDE)And he also had seven sons and three daughters.

וַֽיְהִי־ל֛וֹ שִׁבְעָ֥נָה בָנִ֖ים וְשָׁל֥וֹשׁ בָּנֽוֹת׃

14
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiqera֤ shshem-haֽ'achat֙ yemiyma֔h veshshe֥m hashshּeni֖yt qetziy'a֑h veshshe֥m hashshּeliyshshi֖yt qe֥ren hapּֽuke׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The first daughter he named Jemima, the second Kezia and the third Keren-Happuch.

וַיִּקְרָ֤א שֵׁם־הָֽאַחַת֙ יְמִימָ֔ה וְשֵׁ֥ם הַשֵּׁנִ֖ית קְצִיעָ֑ה וְשֵׁ֥ם הַשְּׁלִישִׁ֖ית קֶ֥רֶן הַפּֽוּךְ׃

15
Phonetic (Hebrew): velo֨ nimetza֜ nashshi֥ym yap֛ot kּiben֥ot 'iyּ֖ob bּekal-ha'a֑retz vayּitּe֨n lahe֧m 'abiyhe֛m nachala֖h bּet֥oke 'acheyheֽm׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)Nowhere in all the land were there women as fair as Job’s daughters, and their father granted them an inheritance along with their brothers.

וְלֹ֨א נִמְצָ֜א נָשִׁ֥ים יָפ֛וֹת כִּבְנ֥וֹת אִיּ֖וֹב בְּכָל־הָאָ֑רֶץ וַיִּתֵּ֨ן לָהֶ֧ם אֲבִיהֶ֛ם נַחֲלָ֖ה בְּת֥וֹךְ אֲחֵיהֶֽם׃ס

16
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayechi֤y 'iyּob֙ 'aֽcharey-zo֔'t me'a֥h ve'arebּa'i֖ym shshana֑h vyr vayּire'e֗h 'et-bּanayv֙ ve'et-bּene֣y bana֔yv 'arebּa'a֖h dּorֽot׃
Edified Edition (EDE)After this, Job lived a hundred and forty years; he saw his children and their children to the fourth generation.

וַיְחִ֤י אִיּוֹב֙ אַֽחֲרֵי־זֹ֔את מֵאָ֥ה וְאַרְבָּעִ֖ים שָׁנָ֑ה וירא וַיִּרְאֶ֗ה אֶת־בָּנָיו֙ וְאֶת־בְּנֵ֣י בָנָ֔יו אַרְבָּעָ֖ה דֹּרֽוֹת׃

17
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֣mat 'iyּ֔ob zaqe֖n ushseba֥ yamiֽym׃
Edified Edition (EDE)And so Job died, an old man and full of years.

וַיָּ֣מָת אִיּ֔וֹב זָקֵ֖ן וּשְׂבַ֥ע יָמִֽים׃
