Chapter 9
1
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֥'an 'iyּ֗ob vayּo'maֽr׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then Job replied:

וַיַּ֥עַן אִיּ֗וֹב וַיֹּאמַֽר׃

2
Phonetic (Hebrew): a֭menam yada֣'etּiy kiy-ke֑n umah-yּitzedּa֖q 'en֣oshsh 'im-'eֽl׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"I know very well that this is true. But how can a mortal be righteous before God?"

אָ֭מְנָם יָדַ֣עְתִּי כִי־כֵ֑ן וּמַה־יִּצְדַּ֖ק אֱנ֣וֹשׁ עִם־אֵֽל׃

3
Phonetic (Hebrew): im-ya֭chepּotz lari֣yb 'imּ֑o loֽ'-ya֝'ane֗nּu 'acha֥t minּiy-'aֽlep׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"Even if one wished to argue with him, one could not answer him once in a thousand times."

אִם־יַ֭חְפֹּץ לָרִ֣יב עִמּ֑וֹ לֹֽא־יַ֝עֲנֶ֗נּוּ אַחַ֥ת מִנִּי־אָֽלֶף׃

4
Phonetic (Hebrew): chaka֣m le֭bab ve'amּi֣ytz kּo֑cha miֽy-hiqeshsha֥h 'e֝la֗yv vayּishshelaֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"His wisdom is profound, his power is vast. Who has ever resisted him and come out unharmed?"

חֲכַ֣ם לֵ֭בָב וְאַמִּ֣יץ כֹּ֑חַ מִֽי־הִקְשָׁ֥ה אֵ֝לָ֗יו וַיִּשְׁלָֽם׃

5
Phonetic (Hebrew): hamּa'etּi֣yq ha֭riym velo֣ yada֑'u 'ashshe֖r hapaka֣m bּe'apּֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"He moves mountains without their knowing it and overturns them in his anger."

הַמַּעְתִּ֣יק הָ֭רִים וְלֹ֣א יָדָ֑עוּ אֲשֶׁ֖ר הֲפָכָ֣ם בְּאַפּֽוֹ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): hamּaregּi֣yz 'e֭retz mimּeqoma֑hּ ve֝'amּude֗yha yitepalּatzֽun׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"He shakes the earth from its place and makes its pillars tremble."

הַמַּרְגִּ֣יז אֶ֭רֶץ מִמְּקוֹמָ֑הּ וְ֝עַמּוּדֶ֗יהָ יִתְפַלָּצֽוּן׃

7
Phonetic (Hebrew): ha'ome֣r la֭cheres velo֣ yizera֑ch ube'a֖d kּokabi֣ym yachetּoֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"He speaks to the sun and it does not shine; he seals off the light of the stars."

הָאֹמֵ֣ר לַ֭חֶרֶס וְלֹ֣א יִזְרָ֑ח וּבְעַ֖ד כּוֹכָבִ֣ים יַחְתֹּֽם׃

8
Phonetic (Hebrew): note֣h shshama֣yim lebadּ֑o ve֝dore֗ke 'al-bּa֥motey yaֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"He alone stretches out the heavens and treads on the waves of the sea."

נֹטֶ֣ה שָׁמַ֣יִם לְבַדּ֑וֹ וְ֝דוֹרֵ֗ךְ עַל־בָּ֥מֳתֵי יָֽם׃

9
Phonetic (Hebrew): oֽshseh-'a֭shsh kּesi֥yl vekiyma֗h vechadere֥y temaֽn׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"He is the Maker of the Bear and Orion, the Pleiades and the constellations of the south."

עֹֽשֶׂה־עָ֭שׁ כְּסִ֥יל וְכִימָ֗ה וְחַדְרֵ֥י תֵמָֽן׃

10
Phonetic (Hebrew): oshse֣h ge֭dolot 'ad-'e֣yn che֑qer venipela'֗ot 'ad-'e֥yn misepּaֽr׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"He performs wonders that cannot be fathomed, miracles that cannot be counted."

עֹשֶׂ֣ה גְ֭דֹלוֹת עַד־אֵ֣ין חֵ֑קֶר וְנִפְלָא֗וֹת עַד־אֵ֥ין מִסְפָּֽר׃

11
Phonetic (Hebrew): he֤n ya'abo֣r 'a֭lay velo֣ 'ere'e֑h ve֝yachalo֗p veֽlo'-'abi֥yn lֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"When he passes me, I cannot see him; when he goes by, I cannot perceive him."

הֵ֤ן יַעֲבֹ֣ר עָ֭לַי וְלֹ֣א אֶרְאֶ֑ה וְ֝יַחֲלֹ֗ף וְֽלֹא־אָבִ֥ין לֽוֹ׃

12
Phonetic (Hebrew): he֣n ya֭chetּop mi֣y yeshshiybe֑nּu miֽy-yo'ma֥r 'e֝la֗yv maֽh-tּa'ashseֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"If he snatches away, who can stop him? Who can say to him, 'What are you doing?'"

הֵ֣ן יַ֭חְתֹּף מִ֣י יְשִׁיבֶ֑נּוּ מִֽי־יֹאמַ֥ר אֵ֝לָ֗יו מַֽה־תַּעֲשֶֽׂה׃

13
Phonetic (Hebrew): e֭lohּa lo'-yashshi֣yb 'apּ֑o tchtv tּachetּa֥yv shsha֝chach֗u 'o֣zerey raֽhab׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"God does not restrain his anger; even the cohorts of Rahab cower at his feet."

אֱ֭לוֹהַּ לֹא־יָשִׁ֣יב אַפּ֑וֹ תחתו תַּחְתָּ֥יו שָׁ֝חֲח֗וּ עֹ֣זְרֵי רָֽהַב׃

14
Phonetic (Hebrew): a֭p kּiֽy-'anoki֣y 'eֽ'ene֑nּu 'ebechara֖h debara֣y 'imּֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"How then can I dispute with him? How can I find words to argue with him?"

אַ֭ף כִּֽי־אָנֹכִ֣י אֶֽעֱנֶ֑נּוּ אֶבְחֲרָ֖ה דְבָרַ֣י עִמּֽוֹ׃

15
Phonetic (Hebrew): ashshe֣r 'im-tza֭daqetּiy lo֣ 'e'ene֑h li֝meshshopeti֗y 'etechanּaֽn׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"Though I were innocent, I could not answer him; I could only plead with my Judge for mercy."

אֲשֶׁ֣ר אִם־צָ֭דַקְתִּי לֹ֣א אֶעֱנֶ֑ה לִ֝מְשֹׁפְטִ֗י אֶתְחַנָּֽן׃

16
Phonetic (Hebrew): im-qara֥'tiy vaֽyּa'ane֑niy loֽ'-'a֝'ami֗yn kּiֽy-ya'azi֥yn qoliֽy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"Even if I summoned him and he responded, I do not believe he would give me a hearing."

אִם־קָרָ֥אתִי וַֽיַּעֲנֵ֑נִי לֹֽא־אַ֝אֲמִ֗ין כִּֽי־יַאֲזִ֥ין קוֹלִֽי׃

17
Phonetic (Hebrew): ashsher-bּishse'ara֥h yeshshupe֑niy vehirebּa֖h petza'a֣y chinּaֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"He would crush me with a storm and multiply my wounds for no reason."

אֲשֶׁר־בִּשְׂעָרָ֥ה יְשׁוּפֵ֑נִי וְהִרְבָּ֖ה פְצָעַ֣י חִנָּֽם׃

18
Phonetic (Hebrew): loֽ'-yi֭tּeneniy hashshe֣b ruchi֑y kּi֥y ya֝shsebּi'a֗niy mamּeroriֽym׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"He would not let me catch my breath but would overwhelm me with misery."

לֹֽא־יִ֭תְּנֵנִי הָשֵׁ֣ב רוּחִ֑י כִּ֥י יַ֝שְׂבִּעַ֗נִי מַמְּרֹרִֽים׃

19
Phonetic (Hebrew): im-leko֣cha 'amּi֣ytz hinּe֑h ve'im-le֝mishshepּa֗t mi֣y yo'iydeֽniy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"If it is a matter of strength, he is mighty! And if it is a matter of justice, who can summon him?"

אִם־לְכֹ֣חַ אַמִּ֣יץ הִנֵּ֑ה וְאִם־לְ֝מִשְׁפָּ֗ט מִ֣י יוֹעִידֵֽנִי׃

20
Phonetic (Hebrew): im-'e֭tzedּaq pּi֣y yareshshiy'e֑niy tּaֽm-'a֝֗niy vaֽyּa'eqeshsheֽniy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"Even if I were innocent, my mouth would condemn me; if I were blameless, it would pronounce me guilty."

אִם־אֶ֭צְדָּק פִּ֣י יַרְשִׁיעֵ֑נִי תָּֽם־אָ֝֗נִי וַֽיַּעְקְשֵֽׁנִי׃

21
Phonetic (Hebrew): tּaֽm-'a֭niy loֽ'-'eda֥ napeshshi֗y 'eme'a֥s chayּaֽy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"Although I am blameless, I have no concern for myself; I despise my own life."

תָּֽם־אָ֭נִי לֹֽא־אֵדַ֥ע נַפְשִׁ֗י אֶמְאַ֥ס חַיָּֽי׃

22
Phonetic (Hebrew): acha֗t hi֥y 'al-kּe֥n 'ama֑retּiy tּa֥m ve֝rashsha֗ h֣u mekalּeֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"It is all the same; that is why I say, 'He destroys both the blameless and the wicked.'"

אַחַ֗ת הִ֥יא עַל־כֵּ֥ן אָמַ֑רְתִּי תָּ֥ם וְ֝רָשָׁ֗ע ה֣וּא מְכַלֶּֽה׃

23
Phonetic (Hebrew): im-shsh֭ot yami֣yt pּite'o֑m lemasּa֖t neqiyּi֣m yile'aֽg׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"When a scourge brings sudden death, he mocks the despair of the innocent."

אִם־שׁ֭וֹט יָמִ֣ית פִּתְאֹ֑ם לְמַסַּ֖ת נְקִיִּ֣ם יִלְעָֽג׃

24
Phonetic (Hebrew): e֤retz ׀ nitּena֬h beֽyad-rashsha֗ pּeneֽy-shshopete֥yha yekasּe֑h 'im-lo֖ 'ep֣o miy-hֽu'׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"When a land falls into the hands of the wicked, he blindfolds its judges. If it is not he, then who is it?"

אֶ֤רֶץ ׀ נִתְּנָ֬ה בְֽיַד־רָשָׁ֗ע פְּנֵֽי־שֹׁפְטֶ֥יהָ יְכַסֶּ֑ה אִם־לֹ֖א אֵפ֣וֹא מִי־הֽוּא׃

25
Phonetic (Hebrew): veyama֣y qa֭lּu minּiy-ra֑tz bּaֽ֝rech֗u lo'-ra'֥u tobaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"My days are swifter than a runner; they fly away without a glimpse of joy."

וְיָמַ֣י קַ֭לּוּ מִנִּי־רָ֑ץ בָּֽ֝רְח֗וּ לֹא־רָא֥וּ טוֹבָֽה׃

26
Phonetic (Hebrew): cha֭lepu 'im-'oniyּ֣ot 'ebe֑h kּe֝ne֗shsher yat֥ushs 'aley-'oֽkel׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"They skim past like boats of papyrus, like eagles swooping down on their prey."

חָ֭לְפוּ עִם־אֳנִיּ֣וֹת אֵבֶ֑ה כְּ֝נֶ֗שֶׁר יָט֥וּשׂ עֲלֵי־אֹֽכֶל׃

27
Phonetic (Hebrew): im-'a֭meriy 'eshshekּecha֣h shsiychi֑y 'e'ezeba֖h pana֣y ve'abeliֽygah׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"If I say, 'I will forget my complaint, I will change my expression and smile,'"

אִם־אָ֭מְרִי אֶשְׁכְּחָ֣ה שִׂיחִ֑י אֶעֶזְבָ֖ה פָנַ֣י וְאַבְלִֽיגָה׃

28
Phonetic (Hebrew): yago֥retּiy kal-'atzּebota֑y ya֝da֗'etּiy kּiy-lo֥ tenaqּeֽniy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"I still dread all my sufferings, for I know you will not hold me innocent."

יָגֹ֥רְתִּי כָל־עַצְּבֹתָ֑י יָ֝דַ֗עְתִּי כִּי־לֹ֥א תְנַקֵּֽנִי׃

29
Phonetic (Hebrew): anoki֥y 'ereshsha֑ lamּah-zּe֝֗h he֣bel 'iygaֽ'׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"Since I am already found guilty, why should I struggle in vain?"

אָנֹכִ֥י אֶרְשָׁ֑ע לָמָּה־זֶּ֝֗ה הֶ֣בֶל אִיגָֽע׃

30
Phonetic (Hebrew): im-hiteracha֥tzetּiy bmv bemey-shsha֑leg va֝hazikּ֗otiy bּebo֣r kּapּaֽy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"Even if I washed myself with soap and cleansed my hands with lye,"

אִם־הִתְרָחַ֥צְתִּי במו בְמֵי־שָׁ֑לֶג וַ֝הֲזִכּ֗וֹתִי בְּבֹ֣ר כַּפָּֽי׃

31
Phonetic (Hebrew): a֭z bּashshּa֣chat tּitebּele֑niy ve֝tiֽ'ab֗uniy shsalemotaֽy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"you would plunge me into a slime pit so that even my clothes would detest me."

אָ֭ז בַּשַּׁ֣חַת תִּטְבְּלֵ֑נִי וְ֝תִֽעֲב֗וּנִי שַׂלְמוֹתָֽי׃

32
Phonetic (Hebrew): kּiy-lo'-'i֣yshsh kּamo֣niy 'eֽ'ene֑nּu nab֥o ya֝chedּa֗v bּamּishshepּaֽt׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"He is not a man like me that I might answer him, that we might confront each other in court."

כִּי־לֹא־אִ֣ישׁ כָּמֹ֣נִי אֶֽעֱנֶ֑נּוּ נָב֥וֹא יַ֝חְדָּ֗ו בַּמִּשְׁפָּֽט׃

33
Phonetic (Hebrew): lo֣ yeshsh-bּeyne֣ynu moki֑ycha yashshe֖t yad֣o 'al-shsheneֽynu׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"If only there were someone to arbitrate between us, to lay his hand upon us both,"

לֹ֣א יֵשׁ־בֵּינֵ֣ינוּ מוֹכִ֑יחַ יָשֵׁ֖ת יָד֣וֹ עַל־שְׁנֵֽינוּ׃

34
Phonetic (Hebrew): yase֣r me'ala֣y shshibet֑o ve֝'emat֗o 'aֽl-tּeba'ataֽnּiy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"someone to remove God’s rod from me, so that his terror would frighten me no more."

יָסֵ֣ר מֵעָלַ֣י שִׁבְט֑וֹ וְ֝אֵמָת֗וֹ אַֽל־תְּבַעֲתַֽנִּי׃

35
Phonetic (Hebrew): aֽ֭dabּerah velo֣ 'iyra'e֑nּu kּi֥y lo'-ke֥n 'a֝noki֗y 'imּadiֽy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"Then I would speak up without fear of him, but as it now stands with me, I cannot."

אַֽ֭דַבְּרָה וְלֹ֣א אִירָאֶ֑נּוּ כִּ֥י לֹא־כֵ֥ן אָ֝נֹכִ֗י עִמָּדִֽי׃
