Chapter 2

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayema֤n yehvah֙ dּa֣g gּad֔ol libelo֖'a 'et-yona֑h vayehi֤y yonah֙ bּime'e֣y hadּa֔g shsheloshsha֥h yami֖ym ushsheloshsha֥h leylֽot׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Then Jonah prayed to the LORD his God out of the fish's belly,

וַיְמַ֤ן יְהוָה֙ דָּ֣ג גָּד֔וֹל לִבְלֹ֖עַ אֶת־יוֹנָ֑ה וַיְהִ֤י יוֹנָה֙ בִּמְעֵ֣י הַדָּ֔ג שְׁלֹשָׁ֥ה יָמִ֖ים וּשְׁלֹשָׁ֥ה לֵילֽוֹת׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּitepּalּe֣l yona֔h 'el-yehva֖h 'eloha֑yv mimּe'e֖y hadּagaֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)And said, "I cried by reason of mine affliction to the LORD, and He heard me; [1] out of the belly of hell cried I, and You heardest my voice."

וַיִּתְפַּלֵּ֣ל יוֹנָ֔ה אֶל־יְהוָ֖ה אֱלֹהָ֑יו מִמְּעֵ֖י הַדָּגָֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֗'mer qa֠ra'tiy mitzּa֥rah li֛y 'el-yehva֖h vaֽyּa'ane֑niy mibּe֧ten shshe'֛ol shshiua֖'etּiy shshama֥'etּa qoliֽy׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"For You hadst cast me into the deep, in the midst of the seas; and the floods compassed me about: all Your billows and Your waves passed over me."

וַיֹּ֗אמֶר קָ֠רָאתִי מִצָּ֥רָה לִ֛י אֶל־יְהוָ֖ה וַֽיַּעֲנֵ֑נִי מִבֶּ֧טֶן שְׁא֛וֹל שִׁוַּ֖עְתִּי שָׁמַ֥עְתָּ קוֹלִֽי׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּashsheliyke֤niy metzulah֙ bּileba֣b yamּi֔ym venaha֖r yesobebe֑niy kּal-mishshebּare֥yka vegalּe֖yka 'ala֥y 'abaֽru׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"Then I said, 'I am cast out of Your sight; yet I will look again toward Your holy temple.'"

וַתַּשְׁלִיכֵ֤נִי מְצוּלָה֙ בִּלְבַ֣ב יַמִּ֔ים וְנָהָ֖ר יְסֹבְבֵ֑נִי כָּל־מִשְׁבָּרֶ֥יךָ וְגַלֶּ֖יךָ עָלַ֥י עָבָֽרוּ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): va'ani֣y 'ama֔retּiy nigera֖shshetּiy minּe֣ged 'eyne֑yka 'a֚ke 'osi֣yp lehabּi֔yt 'el-heyka֖l qadeshsheֽka׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"The waters compassed me about, even to the soul: the depth closed me round about, the weeds were wrapped about my head."

וַאֲנִ֣י אָמַ֔רְתִּי נִגְרַ֖שְׁתִּי מִנֶּ֣גֶד עֵינֶ֑יךָ אַ֚ךְ אוֹסִ֣יף לְהַבִּ֔יט אֶל־הֵיכַ֖ל קָדְשֶֽׁךָ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): apap֤uniy ma֨yim֙ 'ad-ne֔peshsh tּeh֖om yesobebe֑niy s֖up chab֥ushsh lero'shshiֽy׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"I went down to the bottoms of the mountains; the earth with her bars was about me forever: yet hast You brought up my life from corruption, O LORD my God."

אֲפָפ֤וּנִי מַ֨יִם֙ עַד־נֶ֔פֶשׁ תְּה֖וֹם יְסֹבְבֵ֑נִי ס֖וּף חָב֥וּשׁ לְרֹאשִֽׁי׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): leqitzebe֤y hariym֙ yara֔detּiy ha'a֛retz bּeriche֥yha ba'adi֖y le'ola֑m vatּa֧'al mishshּa֛chat chayּa֖y yehva֥h 'elohaֽy׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"When my soul fainted within me I remembered the LORD: and my prayer came in to You, into Your holy temple."

לְקִצְבֵ֤י הָרִים֙ יָרַ֔דְתִּי הָאָ֛רֶץ בְּרִחֶ֥יהָ בַעֲדִ֖י לְעוֹלָ֑ם וַתַּ֧עַל מִשַּׁ֛חַת חַיַּ֖י יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהָֽי׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): bּehite'atּe֤p 'alay֙ napeshshi֔y 'et-yehva֖h zaka֑retּiy vatּab֤o 'ele֨yka֙ tּepilּati֔y 'el-heyka֖l qadeshsheֽka׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"They that observe lying vanities forsake their own mercy."

בְּהִתְעַטֵּ֤ף עָלַי֙ נַפְשִׁ֔י אֶת־יְהוָ֖ה זָכָ֑רְתִּי וַתָּב֤וֹא אֵלֶ֨יךָ֙ תְּפִלָּתִ֔י אֶל־הֵיכַ֖ל קָדְשֶֽׁךָ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): meshshamּeri֖ym habeley-shsha֑ve chasedּa֖m ya'azoֽbu׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"But I will sacrifice to You with the voice of thanksgiving; I will pay that that I have vowed. [2] Salvation is of the LORD."

מְשַׁמְּרִ֖ים הַבְלֵי־שָׁ֑וְא חַסְדָּ֖ם יַעֲזֹֽבוּ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): va'ani֗y bּeq֤ol tּodah֙ 'ezebּechah-lּa֔ke 'ashshe֥r nada֖retּiy 'ashshalּe֑mah yeshshu'a֖tah layhvaֽh׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)And the LORD spoke to the fish, and it vomited out Jonah upon the dry land.

וַאֲנִ֗י בְּק֤וֹל תּוֹדָה֙ אֶזְבְּחָה־לָּ֔ךְ אֲשֶׁ֥ר נָדַ֖רְתִּי אֲשַׁלֵּ֑מָה יְשׁוּעָ֖תָה לַיהוָֽה׃ס

וַיֹּ֥אמֶר יְהוָ֖ה לַדָּ֑ג וַיָּקֵ֥א אֶת־יוֹנָ֖ה אֶל־הַיַּבָּשָֽׁה׃פ
