Jonah

Chapter 4
1
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּe֥ra 'el-yona֖h ra'a֣h gedola֑h vayּi֖char lֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)But it displeased Jonah exceedingly, and he was very angry.

וַיֵּ֥רַע אֶל־יוֹנָ֖ה רָעָ֣ה גְדוֹלָ֑ה וַיִּ֖חַר לֽוֹ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּitepּalּe֨l 'el-yehva֜h vayּo'ma֗r 'anּa֤h yehvah֙ halo'-ze֣h debari֗y 'ad-heyotiy֙ 'al-'ademati֔y 'al-kּe֥n qidּa֖metּiy libero֣cha tּareshshi֑yshshah kּi֣y yada֗'etּiy kּi֤y 'atּah֙ 'eֽl-chanּ֣un verach֔um 'e֤reke 'apּa֨yim֙ verab-che֔sed venicha֖m 'al-hara'aֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)And he prayed to the LORD, and said, "I pray You, O LORD, was not this my saying, when I was yet in my country? Therefore I fled before to Tarshish: for I knew that You are a gracious God, and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repentest You of the evil."

וַיִּתְפַּלֵּ֨ל אֶל־יְהוָ֜ה וַיֹּאמַ֗ר אָנָּ֤ה יְהוָה֙ הֲלוֹא־זֶ֣ה דְבָרִ֗י עַד־הֱיוֹתִי֙ עַל־אַדְמָתִ֔י עַל־כֵּ֥ן קִדַּ֖מְתִּי לִבְרֹ֣חַ תַּרְשִׁ֑ישָׁה כִּ֣י יָדַ֗עְתִּי כִּ֤י אַתָּה֙ אֵֽל־חַנּ֣וּן וְרַח֔וּם אֶ֤רֶךְ אַפַּ֨יִם֙ וְרַב־חֶ֔סֶד וְנִחָ֖ם עַל־הָרָעָֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'atּa֣h yehva֔h qach-na֥ 'et-napeshshi֖y mimּe֑nּiy kּi֛y t֥ob moti֖y mechayּaֽy׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)"Therefore now, O LORD, take, I beseech You, my life from me; for it is better for me to die than to live."

וְעַתָּ֣ה יְהוָ֔ה קַח־נָ֥א אֶת־נַפְשִׁ֖י מִמֶּ֑נִּי כִּ֛י ט֥וֹב מוֹתִ֖י מֵחַיָּֽי׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֣'mer yehva֔h haheyte֖b cha֥rah laֽke׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then said the LORD, "Do you well to be angry?"

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר יְהוָ֔ה הַהֵיטֵ֖ב חָ֥רָה לָֽךְ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּetze֤ yonah֙ min-ha'i֔yr vayּe֖shsheb miqּe֣dem la'i֑yr vayּa'ashs֩ l֨o shsha֜m sukּa֗h vayּe֤shsheb tּachetּe֨yha֙ bּatzּe֔l 'a֚d 'ashshe֣r yire'e֔h mah-yּiheye֖h bּa'iֽyr׃
Edified Edition (EDE)So Jonah went out of the city, and sat on the east side of the city, and there made him a booth, and sat under it in the shadow, till he might see what would become of the city.

וַיֵּצֵ֤א יוֹנָה֙ מִן־הָעִ֔יר וַיֵּ֖שֶׁב מִקֶּ֣דֶם לָעִ֑יר וַיַּעַשׂ֩ ל֨וֹ שָׁ֜ם סֻכָּ֗ה וַיֵּ֤שֶׁב תַּחְתֶּ֨יהָ֙ בַּצֵּ֔ל עַ֚ד אֲשֶׁ֣ר יִרְאֶ֔ה מַה־יִּהְיֶ֖ה בָּעִֽיר׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayema֣n yehvaֽh-'e֠lohiym qiyqay֞on vayּa֣'al ׀ me'a֣l leyona֗h liֽhey֥ot tzel֙ 'al-ro'shsh֔o lehatzּi֥yl l֖o meraֽ'at֑o vayּishsema֥ch yona֛h 'al-haqּֽiyqay֖on shsimecha֥h gedolaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)And the LORD God prepared a gourd, and made it to come up over Jonah, that it might be a shadow over his head, to deliver him from his grief. So Jonah was exceeding glad of the gourd.

וַיְמַ֣ן יְהוָֽה־אֱ֠לֹהִים קִיקָי֞וֹן וַיַּ֣עַל ׀ מֵעַ֣ל לְיוֹנָ֗ה לִֽהְי֥וֹת צֵל֙ עַל־רֹאשׁ֔וֹ לְהַצִּ֥יל ל֖וֹ מֵרָֽעָת֑וֹ וַיִּשְׂמַ֥ח יוֹנָ֛ה עַל־הַקִּֽיקָי֖וֹן שִׂמְחָ֥ה גְדוֹלָֽה׃

7
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayema֤n haֽ'elohiym֙ tּola֔'at bּa'al֥ot hashshּa֖char laֽmּachora֑t vatּa֥ke 'et-haqּiֽyqay֖on vayּiybaֽshsh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)But God prepared a worm when the morning rose the next day, and it smote the gourd that it withered.

וַיְמַ֤ן הָֽאֱלֹהִים֙ תּוֹלַ֔עַת בַּעֲל֥וֹת הַשַּׁ֖חַר לַֽמָּחֳרָ֑ת וַתַּ֥ךְ אֶת־הַקִּֽיקָי֖וֹן וַיִּיבָֽשׁ׃

8
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehi֣y ׀ kּizero֣cha hashshּe֗meshsh vayema֨n 'elohi֜ym r֤ucha qadiym֙ chariyshshi֔yt vatּa֥ke hashshּe֛meshsh 'al-ro֥'shsh yona֖h vayּite'alּa֑p vayּishshe'a֤l 'et-napeshsho֙ lam֔ut vayּo֕'mer t֥ob moti֖y mechayּaֽy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)And it came to pass, when the sun did arise, that God prepared a vehement east wind; and the sun beat upon the head of Jonah, that he fainted, and wished in himself to die, and said, "It is better for me to die than to live."

וַיְהִ֣י ׀ כִּזְרֹ֣חַ הַשֶּׁ֗מֶשׁ וַיְמַ֨ן אֱלֹהִ֜ים ר֤וּחַ קָדִים֙ חֲרִישִׁ֔ית וַתַּ֥ךְ הַשֶּׁ֛מֶשׁ עַל־רֹ֥אשׁ יוֹנָ֖ה וַיִּתְעַלָּ֑ף וַיִּשְׁאַ֤ל אֶת־נַפְשׁוֹ֙ לָמ֔וּת וַיֹּ֕אמֶר ט֥וֹב מוֹתִ֖י מֵחַיָּֽי׃

9
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֤'mer 'elohiym֙ 'el-yona֔h haheyte֥b charaֽh-leka֖ 'al-haqּiֽyqay֑on vayּo֕'mer heyte֥b chaֽrah-li֖y 'ad-maֽvet׃
Edified Edition (EDE)And God said to Jonah, "Do you well to be angry for the gourd?" And he said, "I do well to be angry, even to death."

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֱלֹהִים֙ אֶל־יוֹנָ֔ה הַהֵיטֵ֥ב חָרָֽה־לְךָ֖ עַל־הַקִּֽיקָי֑וֹן וַיֹּ֕אמֶר הֵיטֵ֥ב חָֽרָה־לִ֖י עַד־מָֽוֶת׃

10
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֣'mer yehva֔h 'atּa֥h cha֨setּa֙ 'al-haqּi֣yqay֔on 'ashshe֛r lo'-'ama֥letּa bּ֖o velo֣ gidּaletּ֑o shshebּin-la֥yelah haya֖h ubin-la֥yelah 'abaֽd׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then said the LORD, "You hast had pity on the gourd, for the which you hast not laboured, neither madest it grow; which came up in a night, and perished in a night:"

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר יְהוָ֔ה אַתָּ֥ה חַ֨סְתָּ֙ עַל־הַקִּ֣יקָי֔וֹן אֲשֶׁ֛ר לֹא־עָמַ֥לְתָּ בּ֖וֹ וְלֹ֣א גִדַּלְתּ֑וֹ שֶׁבִּן־לַ֥יְלָה הָיָ֖ה וּבִן־לַ֥יְלָה אָבָֽד׃

11
Phonetic (Hebrew): vaֽ'aniy֙ lo֣ 'ach֔us 'al-niyneve֖h ha'i֣yr hagּedola֑h 'ashshe֣r yeshsh-bּa֡hּ harebּeh֩ miֽshshetּeym-'eshsere֨h ribּ֜o 'ada֗m 'ashshe֤r loֽ'-yada'֙ bּeyn-yemiyn֣o lishsemo'l֔o ubehema֖h rabּaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"And should not I spare Nineveh, that great city, wherein are more than sixscore thousand persons that cannot discern between their right hand and their left hand; and also much cattle?"

וַֽאֲנִי֙ לֹ֣א אָח֔וּס עַל־נִינְוֵ֖ה הָעִ֣יר הַגְּדוֹלָ֑ה אֲשֶׁ֣ר יֶשׁ־בָּ֡הּ הַרְבֵּה֩ מִֽשְׁתֵּים־עֶשְׂרֵ֨ה רִבּ֜וֹ אָדָ֗ם אֲשֶׁ֤ר לֹֽא־יָדַע֙ בֵּין־יְמִינ֣וֹ לִשְׂמֹאל֔וֹ וּבְהֵמָ֖ה רַבָּֽה׃
