Chapter 15

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehi֣y hagּora֗l lematּe֛h bּene֥y yehuda֖h lemishshepּechota֑m 'el-gּeb֨ul 'ed֧om midebּar-tzi֛n ne֖gebּah miqetze֥h teymaֽn׃

Edified Edition (EDE)The allotment for the tribe of Judah [1], according to its clans, extended down to the territory of Edom, to the Desert of Zin in the extreme south.

וַיְהִ֣י הַגּוֹרָ֗ל לְמַטֵּ֛ה בְּנֵ֥י יְהוּדָ֖ה לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָ֑ם אֶל־גְּב֨וּל אֱד֧וֹם מִדְבַּר־צִ֛ן נֶ֖גְבָּה מִקְצֵ֥ה תֵימָֽן׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehi֤y lahem֙ gּeb֣ul ne֔geb miqetze֖h ya֣m hamּe֑lach min-halּashsho֖n hapּone֥h neֽgebּah׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Their southern boundary started from the bay at the southern end of the Dead Sea,

וַיְהִ֤י לָהֶם֙ גְּב֣וּל נֶ֔גֶב מִקְצֵ֖ה יָ֣ם הַמֶּ֑לַח מִן־הַלָּשֹׁ֖ן הַפֹּנֶ֥ה נֶֽגְבָּה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve֠yatza 'el-minּe֜geb lema'ale֤h 'aqerabּiym֙ ve'a֣bar tzi֔nah ve'ala֥h minּe֖geb leqade֣shsh bּarene֑'a ve'aba֤r chetzeron֙ ve'ala֣h 'adּa֔rah venasa֖b haqּareqaֽ'ah׃

Edified Edition (EDE)crossed south of Scorpion Pass, continued on to Zin and went over to the south of Kadesh Barnea. Then it ran past Hezron up to Addar and curved around to Karka.

וְ֠יָצָא אֶל־מִנֶּ֜גֶב לְמַעֲלֵ֤ה עַקְרַבִּים֙ וְעָ֣בַר צִ֔נָה וְעָלָ֥ה מִנֶּ֖גֶב לְקָדֵ֣שׁ בַּרְנֵ֑עַ וְעָבַ֤ר חֶצְרוֹן֙ וְעָלָ֣ה אַדָּ֔רָה וְנָסַ֖ב הַקַּרְקָֽעָה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'aba֣r 'atzem֗onah veyatza'֙ na֣chal mitzera֔yim vhyh vehay֛u tּotze'֥ot hagּeb֖ul ya֑mּah zeh-yiheye֥h lake֖m gּeb֥ul neֽgeb׃

Edified Edition (EDE)It then passed along to Azmon and joined the Wadi of Egypt, ending at the Mediterranean Sea. This is their southern boundary.

וְעָבַ֣ר עַצְמ֗וֹנָה וְיָצָא֙ נַ֣חַל מִצְרַ֔יִם והיה וְהָי֛וּ תֹּצְא֥וֹת הַגְּב֖וּל יָ֑מָּה זֶה־יִהְיֶ֥ה לָכֶ֖ם גְּב֥וּל נֶֽגֶב׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ugeb֥ul qe֨demah֙ ya֣m hamּe֔lach 'ad-qetze֖h hayּaredּe֑n ugeb֞ul lipe'a֤t tzap֨onah֙ milּeshsh֣on hayּa֔m miqetze֖h hayּaredּeֽn׃

Edified Edition (EDE)The eastern boundary is the Dead Sea as far as the mouth of the Jordan. The northern boundary started from the bay of the sea at the mouth of the Jordan,

וּגְב֥וּל קֵ֨דְמָה֙ יָ֣ם הַמֶּ֔לַח עַד־קְצֵ֖ה הַיַּרְדֵּ֑ן וּגְב֞וּל לִפְאַ֤ת צָפ֨וֹנָה֙ מִלְּשׁ֣וֹן הַיָּ֔ם מִקְצֵ֖ה הַיַּרְדֵּֽן׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'ala֤h hagּebul֙ bּe֣yt chagela֔h ve'aba֕r mitzּep֖on lebe֣yt ha'araba֑h ve'ala֣h hagּeb֔ul 'e֥ben bּo֖han bּen-re'ubeֽn׃

Edified Edition (EDE)went up to Beth Hoglah and continued north of Beth Arabah to the Stone of Bohan son of Reuben.

וְעָלָ֤ה הַגְּבוּל֙ בֵּ֣ית חָגְלָ֔ה וְעָבַ֕ר מִצְּפ֖וֹן לְבֵ֣ית הָעֲרָבָ֑ה וְעָלָ֣ה הַגְּב֔וּל אֶ֥בֶן בֹּ֖הַן בֶּן־רְאוּבֵֽן׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'ala֨h hagּeb֥ul ׀ dּebirah֮ me'e֣meq 'akor֒ vetzap֜onah pּone֣h 'el-hagּilegּa֗l 'ashsher-no֨kach֙ lema'ale֣h 'adumּi֔ym 'ashshe֥r minּe֖geb lanּa֑chal ve'aba֤r hagּebul֙ 'el-mey-'e֣yn shshe֔meshsh vehay֥u totze'ota֖yv 'el-'e֥yn rogeֽl׃

Edified Edition (EDE)The boundary then went up to Debir from the Valley of Achor and turned north to Gilgal, which faces the Pass of Adummim south of the gorge. It continued along to the waters of En Shemesh and came out at En Rogel.

וְעָלָ֨ה הַגְּב֥וּל ׀ דְּבִרָה֮ מֵעֵ֣מֶק עָכוֹר֒ וְצָפ֜וֹנָה פֹּנֶ֣ה אֶל־הַגִּלְגָּ֗ל אֲשֶׁר־נֹ֨כַח֙ לְמַעֲלֵ֣ה אֲדֻמִּ֔ים אֲשֶׁ֥ר מִנֶּ֖גֶב לַנָּ֑חַל וְעָבַ֤ר הַגְּבוּל֙ אֶל־מֵי־עֵ֣ין שֶׁ֔מֶשׁ וְהָי֥וּ תֹצְאֹתָ֖יו אֶל־עֵ֥ין רֹגֵֽל׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'ala֨h hagּeb֜ul gּe֣y ben-hinּo֗m 'el-kּe֤tep hayebusiy֙ minּe֔geb hi֖y yerֽushshala֑im ve'ala֨h hagּeb֜ul 'el-ro֣'shsh haha֗r 'a֠shsher 'al-pּene֤y geֽy-hinּom֙ ya֔mּah 'ashshe֛r bּiqetze֥h 'eֽmeq-repa'i֖ym tzapoֽnah׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Then it ran up the Valley of Ben Hinnom along the southern slope of the Jebusite city (that is, Jerusalem). From there it climbed to the top of the hill west of the Hinnom Valley at the northern end of the Valley of Rephaim.

וְעָלָ֨ה הַגְּב֜וּל גֵּ֣י בֶן־הִנֹּ֗ם אֶל־כֶּ֤תֶף הַיְבוּסִי֙ מִנֶּ֔גֶב הִ֖יא יְרֽוּשָׁלִָ֑ם וְעָלָ֨ה הַגְּב֜וּל אֶל־רֹ֣אשׁ הָהָ֗ר אֲ֠שֶׁר עַל־פְּנֵ֤י גֵֽי־הִנֹּם֙ יָ֔מָּה אֲשֶׁ֛ר בִּקְצֵ֥ה עֵֽמֶק־רְפָאִ֖ים צָפֹֽנָה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): veta'a֨r hagּeb֜ul mero֣'shsh haha֗r 'el-ma'eyan֙ me֣y nepetּ֔ocha veyatza֖ 'el-'are֣y har-'eper֑on veta'a֤r hagּebul֙ bּa'ala֔h hi֖y qireya֥t ye'ariֽym׃

Edified Edition (EDE)From the hilltop the boundary curved toward the spring of the waters of Nephtoah, came out at the towns of Mount Ephron and continued toward Baalah (that is, Kiriath Jearim).

וְתָאַ֨ר הַגְּב֜וּל מֵרֹ֣אשׁ הָהָ֗ר אֶל־מַעְיַן֙ מֵ֣י נֶפְתּ֔וֹחַ וְיָצָ֖א אֶל־עָרֵ֣י הַר־עֶפְר֑וֹן וְתָאַ֤ר הַגְּבוּל֙ בַּעֲלָ֔ה הִ֖יא קִרְיַ֥ת יְעָרִֽים׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): venasab֩ hagּeb֨ul mibּa'ala֥h ya֨mּah֙ 'el-ha֣r shse'i֔yr ve'aba֕r 'el-kּe֧tep har-ye'ari֛ym mitzּap֖onah hi֣y kesal֑on veyara֥d bּeֽyt-shshe֖meshsh ve'aba֥r tּimenaֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Then it curved westward from Baalah to Mount Seir, ran along the northern slope of Mount Jearim (that is, Kesalon), continued down to Beth Shemesh and crossed to Timnah.

וְנָסַב֩ הַגְּב֨וּל מִבַּעֲלָ֥ה יָ֨מָּה֙ אֶל־הַ֣ר שֵׂעִ֔יר וְעָבַ֕ר אֶל־כֶּ֧תֶף הַר־יְעָרִ֛ים מִצָּפ֖וֹנָה הִ֣יא כְסָל֑וֹן וְיָרַ֥ד בֵּֽית־שֶׁ֖מֶשׁ וְעָבַ֥ר תִּמְנָֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): veyatza֨ hagּeb֜ul 'el-kּe֣tep 'eqeron֮ tzaponah֒ veta'a֤r hagּebul֙ shshikּer֔onah ve'aba֥r har-haֽbּa'ala֖h veyatza֣ yabene'e֑l vehay֛u tּotze'֥ot hagּeb֖ul yaֽmּah׃

Edified Edition (EDE)It went to the northern slope of Ekron, turned toward Shikkeron, passed Mount Baalah and reached Jabneel. The boundary ended at the Mediterranean Sea.

וְיָצָ֨א הַגְּב֜וּל אֶל־כֶּ֣תֶף עֶקְרוֹן֮ צָפוֹנָה֒ וְתָאַ֤ר הַגְּבוּל֙ שִׁכְּר֔וֹנָה וְעָבַ֥ר הַר־הַֽבַּעֲלָ֖ה וְיָצָ֣א יַבְנְאֵ֑ל וְהָי֛וּ תֹּצְא֥וֹת הַגְּב֖וּל יָֽמָּה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ugeb֣ul ya֔m hayּa֥mּah hagּad֖ol ugeb֑ul ze֠h gּeb֧ul bּeneֽy-yehuda֛h sabi֖yb lemishshepּechotaֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)The western boundary is the coastline of the Mediterranean Sea. These are the boundaries around the people of Judah by their clans.

וּגְב֣וּל יָ֔ם הַיָּ֥מָּה הַגָּד֖וֹל וּגְב֑וּל זֶ֠ה גְּב֧וּל בְּנֵֽי־יְהוּדָ֛ה סָבִ֖יב לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ulekale֣b bּen-yepunּe֗h na֤tan che֨leq֙ bּet֣oke bּeneֽy-yehuda֔h 'el-pּi֥y yehva֖h liֽyhoshshu֑'a 'et-qireya֥t 'arebּa֛ 'abi֥y ha'ana֖q hi֥y cheberֽon׃

Edified Edition (EDE)In accordance with the LORD’s command to him, Joshua gave to Caleb son of Jephunneh a portion in Judah, Kiriath Arba, that is, Hebron. (Arba was the forefather of Anak.)

וּלְכָלֵ֣ב בֶּן־יְפֻנֶּ֗ה נָ֤תַן חֵ֨לֶק֙ בְּת֣וֹךְ בְּנֵֽי־יְהוּדָ֔ה אֶל־פִּ֥י יְהוָ֖ה לִֽיהוֹשֻׁ֑עַ אֶת־קִרְיַ֥ת אַרְבַּ֛ע אֲבִ֥י הָעֲנָ֖ק הִ֥יא חֶבְרֽוֹן׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֤reshsh mishshּam֙ kּale֔b 'et-shsheloshsha֖h bּene֣y ha'ana֑q 'et-shsheshsha֤y ve'et-'achiyman֙ ve'et-tּalema֔y yeliyde֖y ha'anaֽq׃

Edified Edition (EDE)From Hebron Caleb drove out the three Anakites, Sheshai, Ahiman and Talmai, the descendants of Anak.

וַיֹּ֤רֶשׁ מִשָּׁם֙ כָּלֵ֔ב אֶת־שְׁלוֹשָׁ֖ה בְּנֵ֣י הָעֲנָ֑ק אֶת־שֵׁשַׁ֤י וְאֶת־אֲחִימַן֙ וְאֶת־תַּלְמַ֔י יְלִידֵ֖י הָעֲנָֽק׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֣'al mishshּa֔m 'el-yoshshebe֖y dּebi֑r veshshem-dּebi֥r lepani֖ym qireyat-seֽper׃

Edified Edition (EDE)From there he marched against the people living in Debir (formerly called Kiriath Sepher).

וַיַּ֣עַל מִשָּׁ֔ם אֶל־יֹשְׁבֵ֖י דְּבִ֑ר וְשֵׁם־דְּבִ֥ר לְפָנִ֖ים קִרְיַת־סֵֽפֶר׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֣'mer kּale֔b 'ashsher-yakּe֥h 'et-qireyat-se֖per ulekada֑hּ venata֥tּiy l֛o 'et-'akesa֥h bitּi֖y le'ishshּaֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)And Caleb said, "I will give my daughter Aksah in marriage to the man who attacks and captures Kiriath Sepher."

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר כָּלֵ֔ב אֲשֶׁר־יַכֶּ֥ה אֶת־קִרְיַת־סֵ֖פֶר וּלְכָדָ֑הּ וְנָתַ֥תִּי ל֛וֹ אֶת־עַכְסָ֥ה בִתִּ֖י לְאִשָּֽׁה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vaֽyּilekּeda֛hּ 'ateniy'e֥l bּen-qena֖z 'achi֣y kale֑b vayּitּen-l֛o 'et-'akesa֥h bitּ֖o le'ishshּaֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Othniel son of Kenaz, Caleb’s brother, took it; so Caleb gave him his daughter Aksah in marriage.

וַֽיִּלְכְּדָ֛הּ עָתְנִיאֵ֥ל בֶּן־קְנַ֖ז אֲחִ֣י כָלֵ֑ב וַיִּתֶּן־ל֛וֹ אֶת־עַכְסָ֥ה בִתּ֖וֹ לְאִשָּֽׁה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehi֣y bּebo'a֗hּ vatּesiyte֨hu֙ lishshe'֤ol meֽ'et-'abi֨yha֙ shsade֔h vatּitzena֖ch me'a֣l hacham֑or vayּoֽ'mer-la֥hּ kּale֖b mah-lּaֽke׃

Edified Edition (EDE)One day when she came to Othniel, she urged him to ask her father for a field. When she got off her donkey, Caleb asked her, "What can I do for you?"

וַיְהִ֣י בְּבוֹאָ֗הּ וַתְּסִיתֵ֨הוּ֙ לִשְׁא֤וֹל מֵֽאֵת־אָבִ֨יהָ֙ שָׂדֶ֔ה וַתִּצְנַ֖ח מֵעַ֣ל הַחֲמ֑וֹר וַיֹּֽאמֶר־לָ֥הּ כָּלֵ֖ב מַה־לָּֽךְ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּo֜'mer tּenah-lּi֣y beraka֗h kּi֣y 'e֤retz hanּe֨geb֙ netatּa֔niy venatatּa֥h li֖y gּulּo֣t ma֑yim vayּitּen-la֗hּ 'e֚t gּulּo֣t 'ilּiyּ֔ot ve'e֖t gּulּo֥t tּachetּiyּֽot׃p

Edified Edition (EDE)She replied, "Do me a special favour. Since you have given me land in the Negev, give me also springs of water." So Caleb gave her the upper and lower springs.

וַתֹּ֜אמֶר תְּנָה־לִּ֣י בְרָכָ֗ה כִּ֣י אֶ֤רֶץ הַנֶּ֨גֶב֙ נְתַתָּ֔נִי וְנָתַתָּ֥ה לִ֖י גֻּלֹּ֣ת מָ֑יִם וַיִּתֶּן־לָ֗הּ אֵ֚ת גֻּלֹּ֣ת עִלִּיּ֔וֹת וְאֵ֖ת גֻּלֹּ֥ת תַּחְתִּיּֽוֹת׃פ

Phonetic (Hebrew): zo֗'t nachala֛t matּe֥h beney-yehuda֖h lemishshepּechotaֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)This is the inheritance of the tribe of Judah, according to its clans:

זֹ֗את נַחֲלַ֛ת מַטֵּ֥ה בְנֵי־יְהוּדָ֖ה לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiֽhey֣u he'ari֗ym miqetzeh֙ lematּe֣h beneֽy-yehuda֔h 'el-gּeb֥ul 'ed֖om bּanּe֑gebּah qabetze'e֥l ve'e֖der veyagֽur׃

Edified Edition (EDE)The southernmost towns of the tribe of Judah in the Negev toward the boundary of Edom were: Kabzeel, Eder, Jagur,

וַיִּֽהְי֣וּ הֶעָרִ֗ים מִקְצֵה֙ לְמַטֵּ֣ה בְנֵֽי־יְהוּדָ֔ה אֶל־גְּב֥וּל אֱד֖וֹם בַּנֶּ֑גְבָּה קַבְצְאֵ֥ל וְעֵ֖דֶר וְיָגֽוּר׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): veqiyna֥h vediֽymona֖h ve'ade'adaֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Kinah, Dimonah, Adadah,

וְקִינָ֥ה וְדִֽימוֹנָ֖ה וְעַדְעָדָֽה׃

אֲמָ֥ם וּשְׁמַ֖ע וּמוֹלָדָֽה׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Lebaoth, Shilhim, Ain and Rimmon, twenty-nine towns and their villages.

וּלְבָא֥וֹת וְשִׁלְחִ֖ים וְעַ֣יִן וְרִמּ֑וֹן כָּל־עָרִ֛ים עֶשְׂרִ֥ים וָתֵ֖שַׁע וְחַצְרֵיהֶֽן׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): bּashshּepela֑h 'eshshetּa'֥ol vetzare'a֖h ve'ashshenaֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)In the western foothills: Eshtaol, Zorah, Ashnah,

בַּשְּׁפֵלָ֑ה אֶשְׁתָּא֥וֹל וְצָרְעָ֖ה וְאַשְׁנָֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vezan֨ocha֙ ve'e֣yn gּanּi֔ym tּapּ֖ucha veha'eynaֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Zanoah, En Gannim, Tappuah, Enam,

וְזָנ֨וֹחַ֙ וְעֵ֣ין גַּנִּ֔ים תַּפּ֖וּחַ וְהָעֵינָֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): yaremut֙ va'adulּa֔m shsoko֖h va'azeqaֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Jarmuth, Adullam, Sokoh, Azekah,

יַרְמוּת֙ וַעֲדֻלָּ֔ם שׂוֹכֹ֖ה וַעֲזֵקָֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ashshedּ֞od bּenote֣yha vachatzere֗yha 'azּa֥h bּenote֥yha vachatzere֖yha 'ad-na֣chal mitzera֑yim vehayּa֥m hgbvl hagּad֖ol ugebֽul׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)Ashdod, its surrounding settlements and villages; and Gaza, its settlements and villages, as far as the Wadi of Egypt and the coastline of the Mediterranean Sea.

אַשְׁדּ֞וֹד בְּנוֹתֶ֣יהָ וַחֲצֵרֶ֗יהָ עַזָּ֥ה בְּנוֹתֶ֥יהָ וַחֲצֵרֶ֖יהָ עַד־נַ֣חַל מִצְרָ֑יִם וְהַיָּ֥ם הגבול הַגָּד֖וֹל וּגְבֽוּל׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): ubaha֑r shshami֥yr veyatּi֖yr veshsokoֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)In the hill country: Shamir, Jattir, Sokoh,

וּבָהָ֑ר שָׁמִ֥יר וְיַתִּ֖יר וְשׂוֹכֹֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vedanּa֥h veqireyat-sanּa֖h hi֥y debiֽr׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Dannah, Kiriath Sannah (that is, Debir),

וְדַנָּ֥ה וְקִרְיַת־סַנָּ֖ה הִ֥יא דְבִֽר׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): va'ana֥b ve'eshshetּemo֖h ve'aniֽym׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): bּamּidebּa֑r bּe֚yt ha'araba֔h midּi֖yn usekakaֽh׃

וְהַנִּבְשָׁ֥ן וְעִיר־הַמֶּ֖לַח וְעֵ֣ין גֶּ֑דִי עָרִ֥ים שֵׁ֖שׁ וְחַצְרֵיהֶֽן׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'et-hayebusiy֙ yoshshebe֣y yerֽushshalai֔m loֽ'-yvklv yakel֥u beneֽy-yehuda֖h lehֽoriyshsha֑m vayּe֨shsheb hayebusi֜y 'et-bּene֤y yehudah֙ bּiyr֣ushshalai֔m 'a֖d hayּ֥om hazּeֽh׃p
