Chapter 16

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּetze֨ hagּora֜l libene֤y yosep֙ miyּaredּe֣n yeriych֔o leme֥y yeriych֖o mizera֑chah hamּidebּa֗r 'ole֧h miyriych֛o bּaha֖r bּeֽyt-'eֽl׃

Edified Edition (EDE)The allotment for the descendants of Joseph [1] extended from the Jordan, east of the springs of Jericho, and went up from there through the desert into the hill country of Bethel.

וַיֵּצֵ֨א הַגּוֹרָ֜ל לִבְנֵ֤י יוֹסֵף֙ מִיַּרְדֵּ֣ן יְרִיח֔וֹ לְמֵ֥י יְרִיח֖וֹ מִזְרָ֑חָה הַמִּדְבָּ֗ר עֹלֶ֧ה מִירִיח֛וֹ בָּהָ֖ר בֵּֽית־אֵֽל׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): veyatza֥ mibּeֽyt-'e֖l l֑uzah ve'aba֛r 'el-gּeb֥ul ha'arekּi֖y 'atarֽot׃

Edified Edition (EDE)It went on from Bethel (that is, Luz), crossed over to the territory of the Arkites at Ataroth,

וְיָצָ֥א מִבֵּֽית־אֵ֖ל ל֑וּזָה וְעָבַ֛ר אֶל־גְּב֥וּל הָאַרְכִּ֖י עֲטָרֽוֹת׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): veyaֽrad-ya֜mּah 'el-gּeb֣ul hayּapeleti֗y 'a֣d gּeb֧ul bּeyt-choro֛n tּachetּ֖on ve'ad-gּa֑zer vehay֥u ttz'tv totze'ota֖yv yaֽmּah׃

Edified Edition (EDE)descended westward to the territory of the Japhletites as far as the region of Lower Beth Horon and on to Gezer, ending at the Mediterranean Sea.

וְיָֽרַד־יָ֜מָּה אֶל־גְּב֣וּל הַיַּפְלֵטִ֗י עַ֣ד גְּב֧וּל בֵּית־חוֹרֹ֛ן תַּחְתּ֖וֹן וְעַד־גָּ֑זֶר וְהָי֥וּ תצאתו תֹצְאֹתָ֖יו יָֽמָּה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּinechal֥u beney-yose֖p menashshּe֥h ve'eperaֽyim׃

Edified Edition (EDE)So Manasseh and Ephraim, the descendants of Joseph, received their inheritance.

וַיִּנְחֲל֥וּ בְנֵי־יוֹסֵ֖ף מְנַשֶּׁ֥ה וְאֶפְרָֽיִם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehi֛y gּeb֥ul bּeneֽy-'epera֖yim lemishshepּechota֑m vayehi֞y gּeb֤ul nachalatam֙ mizera֔chah 'ater֣ot 'adּa֔r 'ad-bּe֥yt choro֖n 'eleyֽon׃

Edified Edition (EDE)This was the territory of Ephraim, according to its clans: The boundary of their inheritance went from Ataroth Addar in the east to Upper Beth Horon

וַיְהִ֛י גְּב֥וּל בְּנֵֽי־אֶפְרַ֖יִם לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָ֑ם וַיְהִ֞י גְּב֤וּל נַחֲלָתָם֙ מִזְרָ֔חָה עַטְר֣וֹת אַדָּ֔ר עַד־בֵּ֥ית חוֹרֹ֖ן עֶלְיֽוֹן׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): veyatza֨ hagּeb֜ul hayּa֗mּah haֽmּikemetat֙ mitzּap֔on venasa֧b hagּeb֛ul mizera֖chah tּa'ana֣t shshilo֑h ve'aba֣r 'ot֔o mimּizera֖ch yanֽochah׃

Edified Edition (EDE)and continued to the Mediterranean Sea. From Mikmethath on the north it curved eastward to Taanath Shiloh, passing by it to Janoah on the east.

וְיָצָ֨א הַגְּב֜וּל הַיָּ֗מָּה הַֽמִּכְמְתָת֙ מִצָּפ֔וֹן וְנָסַ֧ב הַגְּב֛וּל מִזְרָ֖חָה תַּאֲנַ֣ת שִׁלֹ֑ה וְעָבַ֣ר אוֹת֔וֹ מִמִּזְרַ֖ח יָנֽוֹחָה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): veyara֥d miyּan֖ochah 'atar֣ot vena'ara֑tah upaga'֙ bּiֽyriych֔o veyatza֖ hayּaredּeֽn׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Then it went down from Janoah to Ataroth and Naarah, touched Jericho and came out at the Jordan.

וְיָרַ֥ד מִיָּנ֖וֹחָה עֲטָר֣וֹת וְנַעֲרָ֑תָה וּפָגַע֙ בִּֽירִיח֔וֹ וְיָצָ֖א הַיַּרְדֵּֽן׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): mitּapּ֜ucha yele֨ke hagּeb֥ul ya֨mּah֙ na֣chal qana֔h vehay֥u totze'ota֖yv hayּa֑mּah zo֗'t nachala֛t matּe֥h beney-'epera֖yim lemishshepּechotaֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)From Tappuah the border went western to the Kanah Ravine and ended at the Mediterranean Sea. This was the inheritance of the tribe of Ephraim, according to its clans.

מִתַּפּ֜וּחַ יֵלֵ֨ךְ הַגְּב֥וּל יָ֨מָּה֙ נַ֣חַל קָנָ֔ה וְהָי֥וּ תֹצְאֹתָ֖יו הַיָּ֑מָּה זֹ֗את נַחֲלַ֛ת מַטֵּ֥ה בְנֵי־אֶפְרַ֖יִם לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vehe'ari֗ym hamּibedּalot֙ libene֣y 'epera֔yim bּet֖oke nachala֣t bּeneֽy-menashshּe֑h kּaֽl-he'ari֖ym vechatzereyheֽn׃

Edified Edition (EDE)It also included all the towns and their villages that were set aside for the Ephraimites within the inheritance of the Manassites.

וְהֶעָרִ֗ים הַמִּבְדָּלוֹת֙ לִבְנֵ֣י אֶפְרַ֔יִם בְּת֖וֹךְ נַחֲלַ֣ת בְּנֵֽי־מְנַשֶּׁ֑ה כָּֽל־הֶעָרִ֖ים וְחַצְרֵיהֶֽן׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): velo֣ hori֔yshshu 'et-haֽkּena'ani֖y hayּoshshe֣b bּega֑zer vayּe֨shsheb haֽkּena'ani֜y bּeqe֤reb 'epera֨yim֙ 'ad-hayּ֣om hazּe֔h vayehi֖y lemas-'obeֽd׃p

Edified Edition (EDE)They did not dislodge the Canaanites living in Gezer; to this day the Canaanites live among the people of Ephraim but are required to do forced labour.

וְלֹ֣א הוֹרִ֔ישׁוּ אֶת־הַֽכְּנַעֲנִ֖י הַיּוֹשֵׁ֣ב בְּגָ֑זֶר וַיֵּ֨שֶׁב הַֽכְּנַעֲנִ֜י בְּקֶ֤רֶב אֶפְרַ֨יִם֙ עַד־הַיּ֣וֹם הַזֶּ֔ה וַיְהִ֖י לְמַס־עֹבֵֽד׃פ
