Chapter 2
1
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּishshela֣ch yehoshshu֣'a-bּin-n֠un miֽn-hashshּitּi֞ym shshenaֽyim-'anashshi֤ym meragּeliym֙ che֣reshsh le'mo֔r lek֛u re'֥u 'et-ha'a֖retz ve'et-yeriych֑o vayּe֨lek֜u va֠yּabo'u bּeyt-'ishshּa֥h zona֛h ushshema֥hּ racha֖b vayּishshekּebu-shshaֽmּah׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then Joshua son of Nun secretly sent two spies from Shittim. "Go, look over the land," he said, "especially Jericho." So they went and entered the house of a prostitute named Rahab and stayed there.

וַיִּשְׁלַ֣ח יְהוֹשֻׁ֣עַ־בִּן־נ֠וּן מִֽן־הַשִּׁטִּ֞ים שְׁנַֽיִם־אֲנָשִׁ֤ים מְרַגְּלִים֙ חֶ֣רֶשׁ לֵאמֹ֔ר לְכ֛וּ רְא֥וּ אֶת־הָאָ֖רֶץ וְאֶת־יְרִיח֑וֹ וַיֵּ֨לְכ֜וּ וַ֠יָּבֹאוּ בֵּית־אִשָּׁ֥ה זוֹנָ֛ה וּשְׁמָ֥הּ רָחָ֖ב וַיִּשְׁכְּבוּ־שָֽׁמָּה׃

2
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּe֣'ama֔r leme֥leke yeriych֖o le'mo֑r hinּe֣h 'a֠nashshiym bּa֣'u he֧nּah halּa֛yelah mibּene֥y yishsera'e֖l lachepּo֥r 'et-ha'aֽretz׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The king of Jericho was told, "Look, some of the Israelites have come here tonight to spy out the land."

וַיֵּ֣אָמַ֔ר לְמֶ֥לֶךְ יְרִיח֖וֹ לֵאמֹ֑ר הִנֵּ֣ה אֲ֠נָשִׁים בָּ֣אוּ הֵ֧נָּה הַלַּ֛יְלָה מִבְּנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל לַחְפֹּ֥ר אֶת־הָאָֽרֶץ׃

3
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּishshelach֙ me֣leke yeriych֔o 'el-racha֖b le'mo֑r h֠otziy'iy ha'anashshi֨ym habּa'i֤ym 'ela֨yike֙ 'ashsher-bּa֣'u lebeyte֔ke kּi֛y lachepּo֥r 'et-kּal-ha'a֖retz bּaֽ'u׃
Edified Edition (EDE)So the king of Jericho sent this message to Rahab: "Bring out the men who came to you and entered your house, because they have come to spy out the whole land."

וַיִּשְׁלַח֙ מֶ֣לֶךְ יְרִיח֔וֹ אֶל־רָחָ֖ב לֵאמֹ֑ר ה֠וֹצִיאִי הָאֲנָשִׁ֨ים הַבָּאִ֤ים אֵלַ֨יִךְ֙ אֲשֶׁר־בָּ֣אוּ לְבֵיתֵ֔ךְ כִּ֛י לַחְפֹּ֥ר אֶת־כָּל־הָאָ֖רֶץ בָּֽאוּ׃

4
Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּiqּa֧ch hֽa'ishshּa֛h 'et-shshene֥y ha'anashshi֖ym vaֽtּitzepּen֑o vatּo֣'mer ׀ kּe֗n bּa֤'u 'elay֙ hֽa'anashshi֔ym velo֥ yada֖'etּiy me'a֥yin heֽmּah׃
Edified Edition (EDE)But the woman had taken the two men and hidden them. She replied, "Yes, the men came to me, but I did not know where they had come from.

וַתִּקַּ֧ח הָֽאִשָּׁ֛ה אֶת־שְׁנֵ֥י הָאֲנָשִׁ֖ים וַֽתִּצְפְּנ֑וֹ וַתֹּ֣אמֶר ׀ כֵּ֗ן בָּ֤אוּ אֵלַי֙ הָֽאֲנָשִׁ֔ים וְלֹ֥א יָדַ֖עְתִּי מֵאַ֥יִן הֵֽמָּה׃

5
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehi֨y hashshּa֜'ar lisegּ֗or bּacho֨shsheke֙ veha'anashshi֣ym yatza֔'u lo֣ yada֔'etּiy 'a֥nah halek֖u hֽa'anashshi֑ym ridep֥u mahe֛r 'achareyhe֖m kּi֥y tashsּiygֽum׃
Edified Edition (EDE)At dusk, when it was time to close the city gate, they left. I don't know which way they went. Go after them quickly. You may catch up with them."

וַיְהִ֨י הַשַּׁ֜עַר לִסְגּ֗וֹר בַּחֹ֨שֶׁךְ֙ וְהָאֲנָשִׁ֣ים יָצָ֔אוּ לֹ֣א יָדַ֔עְתִּי אָ֥נָה הָלְכ֖וּ הָֽאֲנָשִׁ֑ים רִדְפ֥וּ מַהֵ֛ר אַחֲרֵיהֶ֖ם כִּ֥י תַשִּׂיגֽוּם׃

6
Phonetic (Hebrew): vehi֖y he'ela֣tam hagּa֑gah vaֽtּitemenem֙ bּepishshetּe֣y ha'e֔tz ha'aruk֥ot la֖hּ 'al-hagּaֽg׃
Edified Edition (EDE)(But she had taken them up to the roof and hidden them under the stalks of flax she had laid out on the roof.)

וְהִ֖יא הֶעֱלָ֣תַם הַגָּ֑גָה וַֽתִּטְמְנֵם֙ בְּפִשְׁתֵּ֣י הָעֵ֔ץ הָעֲרֻכ֥וֹת לָ֖הּ עַל־הַגָּֽג׃

7
Phonetic (Hebrew): veha'anashshi֗ym radep֤u 'ֽachareyhem֙ dּe֣reke hayּaredּe֔n 'a֖l haֽmּa'ebּer֑ot vehashshּa֣'ar saga֔ru 'achare֕y kּa'ashshe֛r yatze'֥u harodepi֖ym 'achareyheֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)So the men set out in pursuit of the spies on the road that leads to the fords of the Jordan, and as soon as the pursuers had gone out, the gate was shut.

וְהָאֲנָשִׁ֗ים רָדְפ֤וּ אַֽחֲרֵיהֶם֙ דֶּ֣רֶךְ הַיַּרְדֵּ֔ן עַ֖ל הַֽמַּעְבְּר֑וֹת וְהַשַּׁ֣עַר סָגָ֔רוּ אַחֲרֵ֕י כַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר יָצְא֥וּ הָרֹדְפִ֖ים אַחֲרֵיהֶֽם׃

8
Phonetic (Hebrew): vehe֖mּah te֣rem yishshekּab֑un vehi֛y 'aleta֥h 'aleyhe֖m 'al-hagּaֽg׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Before the spies lay down for the night, she went up on the roof

וְהֵ֖מָּה טֶ֣רֶם יִשְׁכָּב֑וּן וְהִ֛יא עָלְתָ֥ה עֲלֵיהֶ֖ם עַל־הַגָּֽג׃

9
Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּo֨'mer֙ 'el-ha֣'anashshi֔ym yada֕'etּiy kּiֽy-nata֧n yehva֛h lake֖m 'et-ha'a֑retz vekiֽy-napela֤h 'eֽymatekem֙ 'ale֔ynu veki֥y namo֛gu kּal-yoshshebe֥y ha'a֖retz mipּeneykeֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)and said to them, "I know that the LORD has given this land to you and that a great fear of you has fallen on us, so that all who live in this country are melting in fear because of you.

וַתֹּ֨אמֶר֙ אֶל־הָ֣אֲנָשִׁ֔ים יָדַ֕עְתִּי כִּֽי־נָתַ֧ן יְהוָ֛ה לָכֶ֖ם אֶת־הָאָ֑רֶץ וְכִֽי־נָפְלָ֤ה אֵֽימַתְכֶם֙ עָלֵ֔ינוּ וְכִ֥י נָמֹ֛גוּ כָּל־יֹשְׁבֵ֥י הָאָ֖רֶץ מִפְּנֵיכֶֽם׃

10
Phonetic (Hebrew): kּi֣y shshama֗'enu 'e֠t 'ashsher-hobi֨yshsh yehva֜h 'et-me֤y yam-sup֙ mipּeneyke֔m bּetze'teke֖m mimּitzera֑yim va'ashshe֣r 'ashsiyte֡m lishsheney֩ maleke֨y ha'emori֜y 'ashshe֨r bּe'e֤ber hayּaredּen֙ lesiycho֣n ule'֔og 'ashshe֥r hecherametּe֖m 'otaֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)We have heard how the LORD dried up the water of the Red Sea for you when you came out of Egypt, and what you did to Sihon and Og, the two kings of the Amorites east of the Jordan, whom you completely destroyed.

כִּ֣י שָׁמַ֗עְנוּ אֵ֠ת אֲשֶׁר־הוֹבִ֨ישׁ יְהוָ֜ה אֶת־מֵ֤י יַם־סוּף֙ מִפְּנֵיכֶ֔ם בְּצֵאתְכֶ֖ם מִמִּצְרָ֑יִם וַאֲשֶׁ֣ר עֲשִׂיתֶ֡ם לִשְׁנֵי֩ מַלְכֵ֨י הָאֱמֹרִ֜י אֲשֶׁ֨ר בְּעֵ֤בֶר הַיַּרְדֵּן֙ לְסִיחֹ֣ן וּלְע֔וֹג אֲשֶׁ֥ר הֶחֱרַמְתֶּ֖ם אוֹתָֽם׃

11
Phonetic (Hebrew): vanּishshema'֙ vayּimּa֣s lebabe֔nu velo'-qa֨mah '֥od r֛ucha bּe'i֖yshsh mipּeneyke֑m kּi֚y yehva֣h 'eloֽheyke֔m h֤u 'elohiym֙ bּashshּama֣yim mimּa֔'al ve'al-ha'a֖retz mitּaֽchat׃
Edified Edition (EDE)When we heard of it, our hearts melted in fear and everyone’s courage failed because of you, for the LORD your God is God in heaven above and on the earth below.

וַנִּשְׁמַע֙ וַיִּמַּ֣ס לְבָבֵ֔נוּ וְלֹא־קָ֨מָה ע֥וֹד ר֛וּחַ בְּאִ֖ישׁ מִפְּנֵיכֶ֑ם כִּ֚י יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹֽהֵיכֶ֔ם ה֤וּא אֱלֹהִים֙ בַּשָּׁמַ֣יִם מִמַּ֔עַל וְעַל־הָאָ֖רֶץ מִתָּֽחַת׃

12
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'atּa֗h hishshּaֽbe'u-na֥ liy֙ bּaֽyhva֔h kּiy-'ashsi֥ytiy 'imּake֖m cha֑sed va'ashsiyte֨m gּam-'atּe֜m 'im-bּe֤yt 'abiy֙ che֔sed unetatּe֥m li֖y '֥ot 'emeֽt׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"Now then, please swear to me by the LORD that you will show kindness to my family, because I have shown kindness to you. Give me a sure sign

וְעַתָּ֗ה הִשָּֽׁבְעוּ־נָ֥א לִי֙ בַּֽיהוָ֔ה כִּי־עָשִׂ֥יתִי עִמָּכֶ֖ם חָ֑סֶד וַעֲשִׂיתֶ֨ם גַּם־אַתֶּ֜ם עִם־בֵּ֤ית אָבִי֙ חֶ֔סֶד וּנְתַתֶּ֥ם לִ֖י א֥וֹת אֱמֶֽת׃

13
Phonetic (Hebrew): vehachayite֞m 'et-'abi֣y ve'et-'imּi֗y ve'et-'achay֙ ve'et-'chvty 'acheyota֔y ve'e֖t kּal-'ashshe֣r lahe֑m vehitzּaletּe֥m 'et-napeshshote֖ynu mimּaֽvet׃
Edified Edition (EDE)that you will spare the lives of my father and mother, my brothers and sisters, and all who belong to them, and that you will save us from death."

וְהַחֲיִתֶ֞ם אֶת־אָבִ֣י וְאֶת־אִמִּ֗י וְאֶת־אַחַי֙ וְאֶת־אחותי אַחְיוֹתַ֔י וְאֵ֖ת כָּל־אֲשֶׁ֣ר לָהֶ֑ם וְהִצַּלְתֶּ֥ם אֶת־נַפְשֹׁתֵ֖ינוּ מִמָּֽוֶת׃

14
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֧'meru la֣hּ ha'anashshi֗ym napeshshe֤nu tachetּeykem֙ lam֔ut 'i֚m lo֣ tagּi֔ydu 'et-dּebare֖nu ze֑h vehaya֗h bּetet-yehva֥h la֨nu֙ 'et-ha'a֔retz ve'ashsi֥ynu 'imּa֖ke che֥sed ve'emeֽt׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"Our lives for your lives!" the men assured her. "If you don’t tell what we are doing, we will treat you kindly and faithfully when the LORD gives us the land."

וַיֹּ֧אמְרוּ לָ֣הּ הָאֲנָשִׁ֗ים נַפְשֵׁ֤נוּ תַחְתֵּיכֶם֙ לָמ֔וּת אִ֚ם לֹ֣א תַגִּ֔ידוּ אֶת־דְּבָרֵ֖נוּ זֶ֑ה וְהָיָ֗ה בְּתֵת־יְהוָ֥ה לָ֨נוּ֙ אֶת־הָאָ֔רֶץ וְעָשִׂ֥ינוּ עִמָּ֖ךְ חֶ֥סֶד וֶאֱמֶֽת׃

15
Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּoride֥m bּache֖bel bּe'a֣d hֽachalּ֑on kּi֤y beytahּ֙ bּeqi֣yr haֽchoma֔h ubaֽchoma֖h hi֥y yoshshaֽbet׃
Edified Edition (EDE)So she let them down by a rope through the window, for the house she lived in was part of the city wall.

וַתּוֹרִדֵ֥ם בַּחֶ֖בֶל בְּעַ֣ד הַֽחַלּ֑וֹן כִּ֤י בֵיתָהּ֙ בְּקִ֣יר הַֽחוֹמָ֔ה וּבַֽחוֹמָ֖ה הִ֥יא יוֹשָֽׁבֶת׃

16
Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּo֤'mer lahem֙ haha֣rah lּe֔ku pּeֽn-yipegּe'֥u bake֖m harodepi֑ym venachebּete֨m shsha֜mּah shshelo֣shshet yami֗ym 'a֚d shsh֣ob haroֽdepi֔ym ve'acha֖r tּelek֥u ledarekּekeֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)She said to them, "Go to the hills so the pursuers will not find you. Hide yourselves there three days until they return, and then go on your way."

וַתֹּ֤אמֶר לָהֶם֙ הָהָ֣רָה לֵּ֔כוּ פֶּֽן־יִפְגְּע֥וּ בָכֶ֖ם הָרֹדְפִ֑ים וְנַחְבֵּתֶ֨ם שָׁ֜מָּה שְׁלֹ֣שֶׁת יָמִ֗ים עַ֚ד שׁ֣וֹב הָרֹֽדְפִ֔ים וְאַחַ֖ר תֵּלְכ֥וּ לְדַרְכְּכֶֽם׃

17
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo'mer֥u 'ele֖yha ha'anashshi֑ym neqiyּi֣m 'ana֔chenu mishshּebu'ate֥ke hazּe֖h 'ashshe֥r hishshebּa'etּaֽnu׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Now the men had said to her, "This oath you made us swear will not be binding on us

וַיֹּאמְר֥וּ אֵלֶ֖יהָ הָאֲנָשִׁ֑ים נְקִיִּ֣ם אֲנַ֔חְנוּ מִשְּׁבֻעָתֵ֥ךְ הַזֶּ֖ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר הִשְׁבַּעְתָּֽנוּ׃

18
Phonetic (Hebrew): hinּe֛h 'ana֥chenu ba'i֖ym bּa'a֑retz 'et-tּiqeva֡t chut֩ hashshּani֨y hazּe֜h tּiqeshsheri֗y bּaֽchalּon֙ 'ashshe֣r horadetּe֣nu b֔o ve'et-'abi֨yke ve'et-'imּe֜ke ve'et-'acha֗yike ve'et֙ kּal-bּe֣yt 'abi֔yke tּa'asepi֥y 'ela֖yike habּaֽyetah׃
Edified Edition (EDE)unless, when we enter the land, you have tied this scarlet cord [1] in the window through which you let us down, and unless you have brought your father and mother, your brothers and all your family into your house.

הִנֵּ֛ה אֲנַ֥חְנוּ בָאִ֖ים בָּאָ֑רֶץ אֶת־תִּקְוַ֡ת חוּט֩ הַשָּׁנִ֨י הַזֶּ֜ה תִּקְשְׁרִ֗י בַּֽחַלּוֹן֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר הוֹרַדְתֵּ֣נוּ ב֔וֹ וְאֶת־אָבִ֨יךְ וְאֶת־אִמֵּ֜ךְ וְאֶת־אַחַ֗יִךְ וְאֵת֙ כָּל־בֵּ֣ית אָבִ֔יךְ תַּאַסְפִ֥י אֵלַ֖יִךְ הַבָּֽיְתָה׃

19
Phonetic (Hebrew): vehaya֡h kּo֣l 'ashsher-yetze'֩ midּalete֨y beyte֧ke ׀ hach֛utzah dּam֥o bero'shsh֖o va'ana֣chenu neqiyּi֑m ve֠kol 'ashshe֨r yiֽheye֤h 'itּake֙ bּabּa֔yit dּam֣o bero'shshe֔nu 'im-ya֖d tּiֽheyeh-bּֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)If any of them go outside your house into the street, their blood will be on their own heads; we will not be responsible. As for those who are in the house with you, their blood will be on our head if a hand is laid on them.

וְהָיָ֡ה כֹּ֣ל אֲשֶׁר־יֵצֵא֩ מִדַּלְתֵ֨י בֵיתֵ֧ךְ ׀ הַח֛וּצָה דָּמ֥וֹ בְרֹאשׁ֖וֹ וַאֲנַ֣חְנוּ נְקִיִּ֑ם וְ֠כֹל אֲשֶׁ֨ר יִֽהְיֶ֤ה אִתָּךְ֙ בַּבַּ֔יִת דָּמ֣וֹ בְרֹאשֵׁ֔נוּ אִם־יָ֖ד תִּֽהְיֶה־בּֽוֹ׃

20
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'im-tּagּi֖ydiy 'et-dּebare֣nu ze֑h vehayi֣ynu neqiyּi֔m mishshּebu'ate֖ke 'ashshe֥r hishshebּa'etּaֽnu׃
Edified Edition (EDE)But if you tell what we are doing, we will be released from the oath you made us swear."

וְאִם־תַּגִּ֖ידִי אֶת־דְּבָרֵ֣נוּ זֶ֑ה וְהָיִ֣ינוּ נְקִיִּ֔ם מִשְּׁבֻעָתֵ֖ךְ אֲשֶׁ֥ר הִשְׁבַּעְתָּֽנוּ׃

21
Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּo֨'mer֙ kּedibereyke֣m kּen-h֔u vaֽtּeshshalּeche֖m vayּele֑ku vatּiqeshsho֛r 'et-tּiqeva֥t hashshּani֖y bּachalּֽon׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"Agreed," she replied. "Let it be as you say." So she sent them away, and they departed. And she tied the scarlet cord in the window.

וַתֹּ֨אמֶר֙ כְּדִבְרֵיכֶ֣ם כֶּן־ה֔וּא וַֽתְּשַׁלְּחֵ֖ם וַיֵּלֵ֑כוּ וַתִּקְשֹׁ֛ר אֶת־תִּקְוַ֥ת הַשָּׁנִ֖י בַּחַלּֽוֹן׃

22
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּeleku֙ vayּabo֣'u haha֔rah vayּe֤shshebu shsham֙ shshelo֣shshet yami֔ym 'ad-shsha֖bu harodepi֑ym vayebaqeshsh֧u harodepi֛ym bּekal-hadּe֖reke velo֥ matzaֽ'u׃
Edified Edition (EDE)When they left, they went into the hills and stayed there three days, until the pursuers had searched all along the road and returned without finding them.

וַיֵּלְכוּ֙ וַיָּבֹ֣אוּ הָהָ֔רָה וַיֵּ֤שְׁבוּ שָׁם֙ שְׁלֹ֣שֶׁת יָמִ֔ים עַד־שָׁ֖בוּ הָרֹדְפִ֑ים וַיְבַקְשׁ֧וּ הָרֹדְפִ֛ים בְּכָל־הַדֶּ֖רֶךְ וְלֹ֥א מָצָֽאוּ׃

23
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּashshu֜bu shshene֤y haֽ'anashshiym֙ vayּered֣u meֽhaha֔r vayּa'aberu֙ vayּabo֔'u 'el-yehoshshu֖'a bּin-n֑un vayesa֨pּeru-l֔o 'e֥t kּal-hamּotze'֖ot 'otaֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then the two men started back. They went down out of the hills, forded the river and came to Joshua son of Nun and told him everything that had happened to them.

וַיָּשֻׁ֜בוּ שְׁנֵ֤י הָֽאֲנָשִׁים֙ וַיֵּרְד֣וּ מֵֽהָהָ֔ר וַיַּעַבְרוּ֙ וַיָּבֹ֔אוּ אֶל־יְהוֹשֻׁ֖עַ בִּן־נ֑וּן וַיְסַ֨פְּרוּ־ל֔וֹ אֵ֥ת כָּל־הַמֹּצְא֖וֹת אוֹתָֽם׃

24
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo'meru֙ 'el-yehoshshu֔'a kּiֽy-nata֧n yehva֛h bּeyade֖nu 'et-kּal-ha'a֑retz vegam-namo֛gu kּal-yoshshebe֥y ha'a֖retz mipּaneֽynu׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)They said to Joshua, "The LORD has surely given the whole land into our hands; all the people are melting in fear because of us."

וַיֹּאמְרוּ֙ אֶל־יְהוֹשֻׁ֔עַ כִּֽי־נָתַ֧ן יְהוָ֛ה בְּיָדֵ֖נוּ אֶת־כָּל־הָאָ֑רֶץ וְגַם־נָמֹ֛גוּ כָּל־יֹשְׁבֵ֥י הָאָ֖רֶץ מִפָּנֵֽינוּ׃ס
