Phonetic (Hebrew): a֚z yiqera֣ yehoshshu֔'a larֽ'ubeni֖y velagּadi֑y velachatzi֖y matּe֥h menashshּeֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then Joshua summoned the Reubenites, the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh

אָ֚ז יִקְרָ֣א יְהוֹשֻׁ֔עַ לָרֽאוּבֵנִ֖י וְלַגָּדִ֑י וְלַחֲצִ֖י מַטֵּ֥ה מְנַשֶּֽׁה׃

2
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֣'mer 'aleyhe֔m 'atּe֣m shshemaretּe֔m 'e֚t kּal-'ashshe֣r tziua֣h 'eteke֔m moshshe֖h 'e֣bed yehva֑h vatּishsheme'֣u beqoli֔y leko֥l 'ashsher-tziui֖ytiy 'etekeֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)and said to them, "You have done all that Moses the servant of the LORD commanded, and you have obeyed me in everything I commanded.

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֲלֵיהֶ֔ם אַתֶּ֣ם שְׁמַרְתֶּ֔ם אֵ֚ת כָּל־אֲשֶׁ֣ר צִוָּ֣ה אֶתְכֶ֔ם מֹשֶׁ֖ה עֶ֣בֶד יְהוָ֑ה וַתִּשְׁמְע֣וּ בְקוֹלִ֔י לְכֹ֥ל אֲשֶׁר־צִוִּ֖יתִי אֶתְכֶֽם׃

3
Phonetic (Hebrew): loֽ'-'azabetּe֣m 'et-'acheyke֗m ze֚h yami֣ym rabּi֔ym 'a֖d hayּ֣om hazּe֑h ushshemaretּe֕m 'et-mishsheme֕ret mitzeva֖t yehva֥h 'eloheykeֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)For a long time now, to this very day, you have not deserted your fellow Israelites but have carried out the mission the LORD your God gave you.

לֹֽא־עֲזַבְתֶּ֣ם אֶת־אֲחֵיכֶ֗ם זֶ֚ה יָמִ֣ים רַבִּ֔ים עַ֖ד הַיּ֣וֹם הַזֶּ֑ה וּשְׁמַרְתֶּ֕ם אֶת־מִשְׁמֶ֕רֶת מִצְוַ֖ת יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֵיכֶֽם׃

4
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'atּa֗h heni֨ycha yehva֤h 'eloֽheykem֙ laֽ'acheyke֔m kּa'ashshe֖r dּibּe֣r lahe֑m ve'atּa֡h pּenu֩ ulek֨u lake֜m le'aholeyke֗m 'el-'e֨retz֙ 'achuzּateke֔m 'ashshe֣r ׀ nata֣n lake֗m moshsheh֙ 'e֣bed yehva֔h bּe'e֖ber hayּaredּeֽn׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Now that the LORD your God has given them rest as he promised, return to your homes in the land that Moses the servant of the LORD gave you on the other side of the Jordan.

וְעַתָּ֗ה הֵנִ֨יחַ יְהוָ֤ה אֱלֹֽהֵיכֶם֙ לַֽאֲחֵיכֶ֔ם כַּאֲשֶׁ֖ר דִּבֶּ֣ר לָהֶ֑ם וְעַתָּ֡ה פְּנוּ֩ וּלְכ֨וּ לָכֶ֜ם לְאָהֳלֵיכֶ֗ם אֶל־אֶ֨רֶץ֙ אֲחֻזַּתְכֶ֔ם אֲשֶׁ֣ר ׀ נָתַ֣ן לָכֶ֗ם מֹשֶׁה֙ עֶ֣בֶד יְהוָ֔ה בְּעֵ֖בֶר הַיַּרְדֵּֽן׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ra֣q ׀ shshimer֣u me'o֗d la'ashs֨ot 'et-hamּitzeva֣h ve'et-hatּorah֮ 'ashshe֣r tziua֣h 'etekem֮ moshshe֣h 'eֽbed-yehvah֒ le֠'ahabah 'et-yehva֨h 'eloֽheyke֜m velale֧ket bּekal-dּeraka֛yv velishshemo֥r mitzevota֖yv uledabeqah-b֑o ule'abed֕o bּekal-lebabeke֖m ubekal-napeshshekeֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)But be very careful to keep the commandment and the law that Moses the servant of the LORD gave you: to love the LORD your God, to walk in obedience to him, to keep his commands, to hold fast to him and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul."

רַ֣ק ׀ שִׁמְר֣וּ מְאֹ֗ד לַעֲשׂ֨וֹת אֶת־הַמִּצְוָ֣ה וְאֶת־הַתּוֹרָה֮ אֲשֶׁ֣ר צִוָּ֣ה אֶתְכֶם֮ מֹשֶׁ֣ה עֶֽבֶד־יְהוָה֒ לְ֠אַהֲבָה אֶת־יְהוָ֨ה אֱלֹֽהֵיכֶ֜ם וְלָלֶ֧כֶת בְּכָל־דְּרָכָ֛יו וְלִשְׁמֹ֥ר מִצְוֺתָ֖יו וּלְדָבְקָה־ב֑וֹ וּלְעָבְד֕וֹ בְּכָל־לְבַבְכֶ֖ם וּבְכָל־נַפְשְׁכֶֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vaֽyebareke֖m yehoshshu֑'a vaֽyeshshalּeche֔m vayּelek֖u 'el-'aholeyheֽm׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)Then Joshua blessed them and sent them away, and they went to their homes.

וַֽיְבָרְכֵ֖ם יְהוֹשֻׁ֑עַ וַֽיְשַׁלְּחֵ֔ם וַיֵּלְכ֖וּ אֶל־אָהֳלֵיהֶֽם׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): velachatzi֣y ׀ shshe֣bet haֽmenashshּe֗h nata֣n moshsheh֮ bּabּashshan֒ ulechetzey֗o nata֤n yehoshshu֨'a֙ 'im-'acheyhe֔m m'br bּe'e֥ber hayּaredּe֖n ya֑mּah ve֠gam kּi֣y shshilּecha֧m yehoshshu֛'a 'el-'aholeyhe֖m vayebarakeֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)(To the half-tribe of Manasseh Moses had given land in Bashan, and to the other half of the tribe Joshua gave land on the west side of the Jordan with their fellow Israelites.) When Joshua sent them home, he blessed them,

וְלַחֲצִ֣י ׀ שֵׁ֣בֶט הַֽמְנַשֶּׁ֗ה נָתַ֣ן מֹשֶׁה֮ בַּבָּשָׁן֒ וּלְחֶצְי֗וֹ נָתַ֤ן יְהוֹשֻׁ֨עַ֙ עִם־אֲחֵיהֶ֔ם מעבר בְּעֵ֥בֶר הַיַּרְדֵּ֖ן יָ֑מָּה וְ֠גַם כִּ֣י שִׁלְּחָ֧ם יְהוֹשֻׁ֛עַ אֶל־אָהֳלֵיהֶ֖ם וַיְבָרֲכֵֽם׃

8
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֨'mer 'aleyhe֜m le'mo֗r bּinekasi֨ym rabּi֜ym shsh֤ubu 'el-'aֽholeykem֙ ubemiqene֣h rab-me'o֔d bּeke֨sep ubezaha֜b ubinecho֧shshet ubebareze֛l ubishselam֖ot harebּe֣h me'o֑d chileq֥u shshelal-'oyebeyke֖m 'im-'acheykeֽm׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)saying, "Return to your homes with your great wealth, with large herds of livestock, with silver, gold, bronze and iron, and a great quantity of clothing, and divide the plunder from your enemies with your fellow Israelites."

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר אֲלֵיהֶ֜ם לֵאמֹ֗ר בִּנְכָסִ֨ים רַבִּ֜ים שׁ֤וּבוּ אֶל־אָֽהֳלֵיכֶם֙ וּבְמִקְנֶ֣ה רַב־מְאֹ֔ד בְּכֶ֨סֶף וּבְזָהָ֜ב וּבִנְחֹ֧שֶׁת וּבְבַרְזֶ֛ל וּבִשְׂלָמ֖וֹת הַרְבֵּ֣ה מְאֹ֑ד חִלְק֥וּ שְׁלַל־אֹיְבֵיכֶ֖ם עִם־אֲחֵיכֶֽם׃פ

9
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּashshu֣bu vayּelek֡u bּeney-re'ube֨n ubeney-ga֜d vachatzi֣y ׀ shshe֣bet haֽmenashshּe֗h me'et֙ bּene֣y yishsera'e֔l mishshּilo֖h 'ashshe֣r bּe'eֽretz-kּena֑'an lale֜ket 'el-'e֣retz hagּile'a֗d 'el-'e֤retz 'achuzּatam֙ 'ashshe֣r noֽ'chazu-ba֔hּ 'al-pּi֥y yehva֖h bּeyad-moshsheֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)So the Reubenites, the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh left the Israelites at Shiloh in Canaan to return to Gilead, their own land, which they had acquired in accordance with the command of the LORD through Moses.

וַיָּשֻׁ֣בוּ וַיֵּלְכ֡וּ בְּנֵי־רְאוּבֵ֨ן וּבְנֵי־גָ֜ד וַחֲצִ֣י ׀ שֵׁ֣בֶט הַֽמְנַשֶּׁ֗ה מֵאֵת֙ בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל מִשִּׁלֹ֖ה אֲשֶׁ֣ר בְּאֶֽרֶץ־כְּנָ֑עַן לָלֶ֜כֶת אֶל־אֶ֣רֶץ הַגִּלְעָ֗ד אֶל־אֶ֤רֶץ אֲחֻזָּתָם֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר נֹֽאחֲזוּ־בָ֔הּ עַל־פִּ֥י יְהוָ֖ה בְּיַד־מֹשֶֽׁה׃

10
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּabo֨'u֙ 'el-gּeliyl֣ot hayּaredּe֔n 'ashshe֖r bּe'e֣retz kּena֑'an vayּiben֣u beney-re'ube֣n ubeney-ga֡d vachatzi֣y shshebet֩ haֽmenashshּe֨h shsha֤m mizebּe֨cha֙ 'al-hayּaredּe֔n mizebּe֥cha gּad֖ol lemare'eֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)When they came to Geliloth near the Jordan in the land of Canaan, the Reubenites, the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh built an imposing altar there by the Jordan.

וַיָּבֹ֨אוּ֙ אֶל־גְּלִיל֣וֹת הַיַּרְדֵּ֔ן אֲשֶׁ֖ר בְּאֶ֣רֶץ כְּנָ֑עַן וַיִּבְנ֣וּ בְנֵי־רְאוּבֵ֣ן וּבְנֵי־גָ֡ד וַחֲצִ֣י שֵׁבֶט֩ הַֽמְנַשֶּׁ֨ה שָׁ֤ם מִזְבֵּ֨חַ֙ עַל־הַיַּרְדֵּ֔ן מִזְבֵּ֥חַ גָּד֖וֹל לְמַרְאֶֽה׃

11
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּishsheme'֥u beneֽy-yishsera'e֖l le'mo֑r hinּe֣h ban֣u beneֽy-re'ube֣n ubeney-ga֡d vachatziy֩ shshe֨bet haֽmenashshּe֜h 'et-hamּizebּe֗cha 'el-mul֙ 'e֣retz kּena֔'an 'el-gּeliylot֙ hayּaredּe֔n 'el-'e֖ber bּene֥y yishsera'eֽl׃
Edified Edition (EDE)And when the Israelites heard that they had built the altar on the border of Canaan at Geliloth near the Jordan on the Israelite side,

וַיִּשְׁמְע֥וּ בְנֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל לֵאמֹ֑ר הִנֵּ֣ה בָנ֣וּ בְנֵֽי־רְאוּבֵ֣ן וּבְנֵי־גָ֡ד וַחֲצִי֩ שֵׁ֨בֶט הַֽמְנַשֶּׁ֜ה אֶת־הַמִּזְבֵּ֗חַ אֶל־מוּל֙ אֶ֣רֶץ כְּנַ֔עַן אֶל־גְּלִילוֹת֙ הַיַּרְדֵּ֔ן אֶל־עֵ֖בֶר בְּנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

12
Phonetic (Hebrew): vaֽyּishsheme'֖u bּene֣y yishsera'e֑l vayּiqּa֨hal֜u kּal-'ada֤t bּeneֽy-yishsera'el֙ shshilo֔h la'al֥ot 'aleyhe֖m latzּabaֽ'׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)the whole assembly of Israel gathered at Shiloh to go to war against them.

וַֽיִּשְׁמְע֖וּ בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וַיִּקָּ֨הֲל֜וּ כָּל־עֲדַ֤ת בְּנֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ שִׁלֹ֔ה לַעֲל֥וֹת עֲלֵיהֶ֖ם לַצָּבָֽא׃פ

13
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּishshelech֨u beneֽy-yishsera'e֜l 'el-bּeney-re'ube֧n ve'el-bּeney-ga֛d ve'el-chatzi֥y shsheֽbet-menashshּe֖h 'el-'e֣retz hagּile'a֑d 'et-pּiynecha֖s bּen-'ele'aza֥r hakּoheֽn׃
Edified Edition (EDE)So the Israelites sent Phinehas son of Eleazar, the priest, to the land of Gilead, to the Reubenites, the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh.

וַיִּשְׁלְח֨וּ בְנֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵ֜ל אֶל־בְּנֵי־רְאוּבֵ֧ן וְאֶל־בְּנֵי־גָ֛ד וְאֶל־חֲצִ֥י שֵֽׁבֶט־מְנַשֶּׁ֖ה אֶל־אֶ֣רֶץ הַגִּלְעָ֑ד אֶת־פִּינְחָ֖ס בֶּן־אֶלְעָזָ֥ר הַכֹּהֵֽן׃

14
Phonetic (Hebrew): va'ashsara֤h neshsi'iym֙ 'imּ֔o nashsi֨y 'echa֜d nashsi֤y 'echad֙ lebe֣yt 'a֔b leko֖l matּ֣ot yishsera'e֑l ve'i֨yshsh ro֧'shsh bּeyt-'abota֛m he֖mּah le'alepe֥y yishsera'eֽl׃
Edified Edition (EDE)With him they sent ten of the chief men, one from each of the tribal clans of Israel, each the head of a family division among the Israelite clans.

וַעֲשָׂרָ֤ה נְשִׂאִים֙ עִמּ֔וֹ נָשִׂ֨יא אֶחָ֜ד נָשִׂ֤יא אֶחָד֙ לְבֵ֣ית אָ֔ב לְכֹ֖ל מַטּ֣וֹת יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וְאִ֨ישׁ רֹ֧אשׁ בֵּית־אֲבוֹתָ֛ם הֵ֖מָּה לְאַלְפֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

15
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּabo֜'u 'el-bּeney-re'ube֧n ve'el-bּeney-ga֛d ve'el-chatzi֥y shsheֽbet-menashshּe֖h 'el-'e֣retz hagּile'a֑d vayedabּer֥u 'itּa֖m le'moֽr׃
Edified Edition (EDE)When they went to Gilead, to the Reubenites, the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh, they said to them:

וַיָּבֹ֜אוּ אֶל־בְּנֵי־רְאוּבֵ֧ן וְאֶל־בְּנֵי־גָ֛ד וְאֶל־חֲצִ֥י שֵֽׁבֶט־מְנַשֶּׁ֖ה אֶל־אֶ֣רֶץ הַגִּלְעָ֑ד וַיְדַבְּר֥וּ אִתָּ֖ם לֵאמֹֽר׃

16
Phonetic (Hebrew): kּo֣h 'amer֞u kּo֣l ׀ 'ada֣t yehva֗h maֽh-hamּa֤'al hazּeh֙ 'ashshe֤r me'aletּem֙ bּe'lohe֣y yishsera'e֔l lashsh֣ub hayּ֔om me'achare֖y yehva֑h bּibenֽoteke֤m lakem֙ mizebּe֔cha limeradeke֥m hayּ֖om bּayhvaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"The whole assembly of the LORD says: 'How could you break faith with the God of Israel like this? How could you turn away from the LORD and build yourselves an altar in rebellion against him now?

כֹּ֣ה אָמְר֞וּ כֹּ֣ל ׀ עֲדַ֣ת יְהוָ֗ה מָֽה־הַמַּ֤עַל הַזֶּה֙ אֲשֶׁ֤ר מְעַלְתֶּם֙ בֵּאלֹהֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל לָשׁ֣וּב הַיּ֔וֹם מֵאַחֲרֵ֖י יְהוָ֑ה בִּבְנֽוֹתְכֶ֤ם לָכֶם֙ מִזְבֵּ֔חַ לִמְרָדְכֶ֥ם הַיּ֖וֹם בַּיהוָֽה׃

17
Phonetic (Hebrew): hame'at-la֨nu֙ 'et-'avo֣n pּe'֔or 'ashshe֤r loֽ'-hitּaha֨renu֙ mimּe֔nּu 'a֖d hayּ֣om hazּe֑h vayehi֥y hanּe֖gep bּa'ada֥t yehvaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Was not the sin of Peor enough for us? Up to this very day we have not cleansed ourselves from that sin, even though a plague fell on the community of the LORD!

הַמְעַט־לָ֨נוּ֙ אֶת־עֲוֺ֣ן פְּע֔וֹר אֲשֶׁ֤ר לֹֽא־הִטַּהַ֨רְנוּ֙ מִמֶּ֔נּוּ עַ֖ד הַיּ֣וֹם הַזֶּ֑ה וַיְהִ֥י הַנֶּ֖גֶף בַּעֲדַ֥ת יְהוָֽה׃

18
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'atּem֙ tּashshu֣bu hayּ֔om me'achare֖y yehva֑h vehaya֗h 'atּe֞m tּimered֤u hayּom֙ bּaֽyhva֔h umacha֕r 'eֽl-kּal-'ada֥t yishsera'e֖l yiqetzoֽp׃
Edified Edition (EDE)And are you now turning away from the LORD? If you rebel against the LORD today, tomorrow he will be angry with the whole community of Israel.

וְאַתֶּם֙ תָּשֻׁ֣בוּ הַיּ֔וֹם מֵאַחֲרֵ֖י יְהוָ֑ה וְהָיָ֗ה אַתֶּ֞ם תִּמְרְד֤וּ הַיּוֹם֙ בַּֽיהוָ֔ה וּמָחָ֕ר אֶֽל־כָּל־עֲדַ֥ת יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל יִקְצֹֽף׃

19
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'a֨ke 'im-teme'a֜h 'e֣retz 'achuzּateke֗m 'iber֨u lake֜m 'el-'e֨retz 'achuzּa֤t yehvah֙ 'ashshe֤r shshaֽkan-shsham֙ mishshekּa֣n yehva֔h vehe'achaz֖u bּetoke֑nu ubaֽyhva֣h 'al-tּimero֗du ve'ota֨nu֙ 'el-tּimero֔du bּibenoֽteke֤m lakem֙ mizebּe֔cha miֽbּale'ade֔y mizebּa֖ch yehva֥h 'eloheֽynu׃
Edified Edition (EDE)If the land you possess is defiled, come over to the LORD’s land, where the LORD’s tabernacle stands, and share the land with us. But do not rebel against the LORD or against us by building an altar for yourselves, other than the altar of the LORD our God.

וְאַ֨ךְ אִם־טְמֵאָ֜ה אֶ֣רֶץ אֲחֻזַּתְכֶ֗ם עִבְר֨וּ לָכֶ֜ם אֶל־אֶ֨רֶץ אֲחֻזַּ֤ת יְהוָה֙ אֲשֶׁ֤ר שָֽׁכַן־שָׁם֙ מִשְׁכַּ֣ן יְהוָ֔ה וְהֵאָחֲז֖וּ בְּתוֹכֵ֑נוּ וּבַֽיהוָ֣ה אַל־תִּמְרֹ֗דוּ וְאֹתָ֨נוּ֙ אֶל־תִּמְרֹ֔דוּ בִּבְנֹֽתְכֶ֤ם לָכֶם֙ מִזְבֵּ֔חַ מִֽבַּלְעֲדֵ֔י מִזְבַּ֖ח יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֵֽינוּ׃

20
Phonetic (Hebrew): hal֣o ׀ 'aka֣n bּen-ze֗rach ma֤'al ma֨'al֙ bּache֔rem ve'aֽl-kּal-'ada֥t yishsera'e֖l ha֣yah qa֑tzep vehu'֙ 'i֣yshsh 'echa֔d lo֥ gava֖ bּa'avonֽo׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)When Achan son of Zerah was unfaithful in regard to the devoted things, did not wrath come on the whole community of Israel? He was not the only one who died for his sin.'"

הֲל֣וֹא ׀ עָכָ֣ן בֶּן־זֶ֗רַח מָ֤עַל מַ֨עַל֙ בַּחֵ֔רֶם וְעַֽל־כָּל־עֲדַ֥ת יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל הָ֣יָה קָ֑צֶף וְהוּא֙ אִ֣ישׁ אֶחָ֔ד לֹ֥א גָוַ֖ע בַּעֲוֺנֽוֹ׃פ

21
Phonetic (Hebrew): vaֽyּa'anu֙ bּeney-re'ube֣n ubeney-ga֔d vachatzi֖y shshe֣bet haֽmenashshּe֑h vaֽyedabּer֔u 'et-ra'shshe֖y 'alepe֥y yishsera'eֽl׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then the Reubenites, the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh replied to the heads of the clans of Israel:

וַֽיַּעֲנוּ֙ בְּנֵי־רְאוּבֵ֣ן וּבְנֵי־גָ֔ד וַחֲצִ֖י שֵׁ֣בֶט הַֽמְנַשֶּׁ֑ה וַֽיְדַבְּר֔וּ אֶת־רָאשֵׁ֖י אַלְפֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

22
Phonetic (Hebrew): el֩ ׀ 'elohi֨ym ׀ yehva֜h 'e֣l ׀ 'elohi֤ym ׀ yehvah֙ h֣u yode֔'a veyishsera'e֖l h֣u yeda֑ 'im-bּeme֤red ve'im-bּema֨'al֙ bּaֽyhva֔h 'al-tּoshshiy'e֖nu hayּ֥om hazּeֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"The Mighty One, God, the LORD! The Mighty One, God, the LORD! He knows! And let Israel know! If this has been in rebellion or unfaithfulness to the LORD, do not spare us this day.

אֵל֩ ׀ אֱלֹהִ֨ים ׀ יְהוָ֜ה אֵ֣ל ׀ אֱלֹהִ֤ים ׀ יְהוָה֙ ה֣וּא יֹדֵ֔עַ וְיִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל ה֣וּא יֵדָ֑ע אִם־בְּמֶ֤רֶד וְאִם־בְּמַ֨עַל֙ בַּֽיהוָ֔ה אַל־תּוֹשִׁיעֵ֖נוּ הַיּ֥וֹם הַזֶּֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): liben֥ot la֨nu֙ mizebּe֔cha lashsh֖ub me'achare֣y yehva֑h ve'im-leha'al֨ot 'ala֜yv 'ola֣h uminecha֗h ve'im-la'ashs֤ot 'alayv֙ zibeche֣y shshelami֔ym yehva֖h h֥u yebaqּeֽshsh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)If we have built our own altar to turn away from the LORD and to offer burnt offerings and grain offerings, or to sacrifice fellowship offerings on it, may the LORD himself call us to account.

לִבְנ֥וֹת לָ֨נוּ֙ מִזְבֵּ֔חַ לָשׁ֖וּב מֵאַחֲרֵ֣י יְהוָ֑ה וְאִם־לְהַעֲל֨וֹת עָלָ֜יו עוֹלָ֣ה וּמִנְחָ֗ה וְאִם־לַעֲשׂ֤וֹת עָלָיו֙ זִבְחֵ֣י שְׁלָמִ֔ים יְהוָ֖ה ה֥וּא יְבַקֵּֽשׁ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'im-lo֤ midּe'agah֙ midּaba֔r 'ashsi֥ynu 'et-zo֖'t le'mo֑r macha֗r yo'mer֨u beneyke֤m lebane֨ynu֙ le'mo֔r mah-lּake֕m velaֽyhva֖h 'elohe֥y yishsera'eֽl׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"No! We did it for fear that some day your descendants might say to ours, 'What do you have to do with the LORD, the God of Israel?

וְאִם־לֹ֤א מִדְּאָגָה֙ מִדָּבָ֔ר עָשִׂ֥ינוּ אֶת־זֹ֖את לֵאמֹ֑ר מָחָ֗ר יֹאמְר֨וּ בְנֵיכֶ֤ם לְבָנֵ֨ינוּ֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר מַה־לָּכֶ֕ם וְלַֽיהוָ֖ה אֱלֹהֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

25
Phonetic (Hebrew): ugeb֣ul naֽtan-ye֠hvah bּeyne֨nu ubeyneyke֜m bּeney-re'ube֤n ubeney-gad֙ 'et-hayּaredּe֔n 'eyn-lake֥m che֖leq bּaֽyhva֑h vehishshebּi֤ytu beneykem֙ 'et-bּane֔ynu lebiletּi֖y yero֥ 'et-yehvaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The LORD has made the Jordan a boundary between us and you, you Reubenites and Gadites! You have no share in the LORD.' So your descendants might cause ours to stop fearing the LORD.

וּגְב֣וּל נָֽתַן־יְ֠הוָה בֵּינֵ֨נוּ וּבֵינֵיכֶ֜ם בְּנֵי־רְאוּבֵ֤ן וּבְנֵי־גָד֙ אֶת־הַיַּרְדֵּ֔ן אֵין־לָכֶ֥ם חֵ֖לֶק בַּֽיהוָ֑ה וְהִשְׁבִּ֤יתוּ בְנֵיכֶם֙ אֶת־בָּנֵ֔ינוּ לְבִלְתִּ֖י יְרֹ֥א אֶת־יְהוָֽה׃

26
Phonetic (Hebrew): vanּo֕'mer na'ashseh-nּa֣ la֔nu liben֖ot 'et-hamּizebּe֑cha lo֥ le'ola֖h velo֥ lezaֽbach׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"That is why we said, 'Let us get ready and build an altar, but not for burnt offerings or sacrifices.'

וַנֹּ֕אמֶר נַעֲשֶׂה־נָּ֣א לָ֔נוּ לִבְנ֖וֹת אֶת־הַמִּזְבֵּ֑חַ לֹ֥א לְעוֹלָ֖ה וְלֹ֥א לְזָֽבַח׃

27
Phonetic (Hebrew): kּiy֩ 'e֨d h֜u bּeyne֣ynu ubeyneyke֗m ube֣yn dּoroteynu֮ 'achareynu֒ la'abo֞d 'et-'aboda֤t yehvah֙ lepana֔yv bּe'olote֥ynu ubizebache֖ynu ubishshelame֑ynu velo'-yo'mer֨u beneyke֤m machar֙ lebane֔ynu 'eyn-lake֥m che֖leq bּayhvaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)On the contrary, it is to be a witness between us and you and the generations that follow, that we will worship the LORD at his sanctuary with our burnt offerings, sacrifices and fellowship offerings. Then in the future your descendants will not be able to say to ours, 'You have no share in the LORD.'

כִּי֩ עֵ֨ד ה֜וּא בֵּינֵ֣ינוּ וּבֵינֵיכֶ֗ם וּבֵ֣ין דֹּרוֹתֵינוּ֮ אַחֲרֵינוּ֒ לַעֲבֹ֞ד אֶת־עֲבֹדַ֤ת יְהוָה֙ לְפָנָ֔יו בְּעֹלוֹתֵ֥ינוּ וּבִזְבָחֵ֖ינוּ וּבִשְׁלָמֵ֑ינוּ וְלֹא־יֹאמְר֨וּ בְנֵיכֶ֤ם מָחָר֙ לְבָנֵ֔ינוּ אֵין־לָכֶ֥ם חֵ֖לֶק בַּיהוָֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vanּo֕'mer vehaya֗h kּiֽy-yo'mer֥u 'ele֛ynu ve'el-dּorote֖ynu macha֑r ve'ama֡renu re'֣u 'et-tּabeniyt֩ mizebּa֨ch yehva֜h 'ashsher-'ashs֣u 'abote֗ynu lo֤ le'olah֙ velo֣ leze֔bach kּiy-'e֣d h֔u bּeyne֖ynu ubeyneykeֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"And we said, 'If they ever say this to us, or to our descendants, we will answer: Look at the replica of the LORD’s altar, which our ancestors built, not for burnt offerings or sacrifices, but as a witness between us and you.'

וַנֹּ֕אמֶר וְהָיָ֗ה כִּֽי־יֹאמְר֥וּ אֵלֵ֛ינוּ וְאֶל־דֹּרֹתֵ֖ינוּ מָחָ֑ר וְאָמַ֡רְנוּ רְא֣וּ אֶת־תַּבְנִית֩ מִזְבַּ֨ח יְהוָ֜ה אֲשֶׁר־עָשׂ֣וּ אֲבוֹתֵ֗ינוּ לֹ֤א לְעוֹלָה֙ וְלֹ֣א לְזֶ֔בַח כִּי־עֵ֣ד ה֔וּא בֵּינֵ֖ינוּ וּבֵינֵיכֶֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): chaliylah֩ lּa֨nu mimּe֜nּu limero֣d bּaֽyhva֗h velashsh֤ub hayּom֙ me'achare֣y yehva֔h liben֣ot mizebּe֔cha le'ola֖h leminecha֣h uleza֑bach milּeba֗d mizebּach֙ yehva֣h 'elohe֔ynu 'ashshe֖r lipene֥y mishshekּanֽo׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)"Far be it from us to rebel against the LORD and turn away from him today by building an altar for burnt offerings, grain offerings and sacrifices, other than the altar of the LORD our God that stands before his tabernacle."

חָלִילָה֩ לָּ֨נוּ מִמֶּ֜נּוּ לִמְרֹ֣ד בַּֽיהוָ֗ה וְלָשׁ֤וּב הַיּוֹם֙ מֵאַחֲרֵ֣י יְהוָ֔ה לִבְנ֣וֹת מִזְבֵּ֔חַ לְעֹלָ֖ה לְמִנְחָ֣ה וּלְזָ֑בַח מִלְּבַ֗ד מִזְבַּח֙ יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֵ֔ינוּ אֲשֶׁ֖ר לִפְנֵ֥י מִשְׁכָּנֽוֹ׃פ

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּishshema֞ pּiֽynecha֣s hakּohe֗n uneshsiy'e֨y ha'eda֜h vera'shshe֨y 'alepe֤y yishsera'el֙ 'ashshe֣r 'itּ֔o 'et-ha֨dּebari֔ym 'ashshe֧r dּibּer֛u bּeney-re'ube֥n ubeney-ga֖d ubene֣y menashshּe֑h vayּiyta֖b bּe'eyneyheֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)When Phinehas the priest and the leaders of the community, the heads of the clans of the Israelites, heard what the Reubenites, Gadites and Manassites had to say, they were pleased.

וַיִּשְׁמַ֞ע פִּֽינְחָ֣ס הַכֹּהֵ֗ן וּנְשִׂיאֵ֨י הָעֵדָ֜ה וְרָאשֵׁ֨י אַלְפֵ֤י יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר אִתּ֔וֹ אֶת־הַ֨דְּבָרִ֔ים אֲשֶׁ֧ר דִּבְּר֛וּ בְּנֵי־רְאוּבֵ֥ן וּבְנֵי־גָ֖ד וּבְנֵ֣י מְנַשֶּׁ֑ה וַיִּיטַ֖ב בְּעֵינֵיהֶֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֣'mer pּiֽynecha֣s bּen-'ele'aza֣r hakּohe֡n 'el-bּeney-re'ube֨n ve'el-bּeney-ga֜d ve'el-bּene֣y menashshּe֗h hayּ֤om ׀ yada֨'enu֙ kּiֽy-betoke֣nu yehva֔h 'ashshe֛r loֽ'-me'aletּe֥m bּaֽyhva֖h hamּa֣'al hazּe֑h 'a֗z hitzּaletּe֛m 'et-bּene֥y yishsera'e֖l miyּa֥d yehvaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)And Phinehas son of Eleazar, the priest, said to the Reubenites, Gadites and Manassites, "Today we know that the LORD is with us, because you have not been unfaithful to the LORD in this matter. Now you have rescued the Israelites from the LORD’s hand."

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר פִּֽינְחָ֣ס בֶּן־אֶלְעָזָ֣ר הַכֹּהֵ֡ן אֶל־בְּנֵי־רְאוּבֵ֨ן וְאֶל־בְּנֵי־גָ֜ד וְאֶל־בְּנֵ֣י מְנַשֶּׁ֗ה הַיּ֤וֹם ׀ יָדַ֨עְנוּ֙ כִּֽי־בְתוֹכֵ֣נוּ יְהוָ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֛ר לֹֽא־מְעַלְתֶּ֥ם בַּֽיהוָ֖ה הַמַּ֣עַל הַזֶּ֑ה אָ֗ז הִצַּלְתֶּ֛ם אֶת־בְּנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל מִיַּ֥ד יְהוָֽה׃

32
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֣shshab pּiֽynecha֣s bּen-'ele'aza֣r hakּohe֣n ׀ vehanּeshsiy'i֡ym me'e֣t bּeneֽy-re'uben֩ ume'e֨t bּeney-ga֜d me'e֧retz hagּile'a֛d 'el-'e֥retz kּena֖'an 'el-bּene֣y yishsera'e֑l vayּashshi֥bu 'ota֖m dּabaֽr׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then Phinehas son of Eleazar, the priest, and the leaders returned to Canaan from their meeting with the Reubenites and Gadites in Gilead and reported to the Israelites.

וַיָּ֣שָׁב פִּֽינְחָ֣ס בֶּן־אֶלְעָזָ֣ר הַכֹּהֵ֣ן ׀ וְהַנְּשִׂיאִ֡ים מֵאֵ֣ת בְּנֵֽי־רְאוּבֵן֩ וּמֵאֵ֨ת בְּנֵי־גָ֜ד מֵאֶ֧רֶץ הַגִּלְעָ֛ד אֶל־אֶ֥רֶץ כְּנַ֖עַן אֶל־בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וַיָּשִׁ֥בוּ אוֹתָ֖ם דָּבָֽר׃

33
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiyta֣b hadּaba֗r bּe'eyney֙ bּene֣y yishsera'e֔l vayebarak֥u 'elohi֖ym bּene֣y yishsera'e֑l velo֣ 'amer֗u la'al֤ot 'aleyhem֙ latzּaba֔ leshshachet֙ 'et-ha'a֔retz 'ashshe֛r bּeney-re'ube֥n ubeney-ga֖d yoshshebi֥ym bּaֽhּ׃
Edified Edition (EDE)They were glad to hear the report and praised God. And they talked no more about going to war against them to devastate the country where the Reubenites and the Gadites lived.

וַיִּיטַ֣ב הַדָּבָ֗ר בְּעֵינֵי֙ בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל וַיְבָרֲכ֥וּ אֱלֹהִ֖ים בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וְלֹ֣א אָמְר֗וּ לַעֲל֤וֹת עֲלֵיהֶם֙ לַצָּבָ֔א לְשַׁחֵת֙ אֶת־הָאָ֔רֶץ אֲשֶׁ֛ר בְּנֵי־רְאוּבֵ֥ן וּבְנֵי־גָ֖ד יֹשְׁבִ֥ים בָּֽהּ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vaֽyּiqere'֛u bּeney-re'ube֥n ubeney-ga֖d lamּizebּe֑cha kּi֣y 'e֥d hu'֙ bּeֽynote֔ynu kּi֥y yehva֖h ha'elohiֽym׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)And the Reubenites and the Gadites gave the altar this name: A Witness [1] Between Us, that the LORD is God.

וַֽיִּקְרְא֛וּ בְּנֵי־רְאוּבֵ֥ן וּבְנֵי־גָ֖ד לַמִּזְבֵּ֑חַ כִּ֣י עֵ֥ד הוּא֙ בֵּֽינֹתֵ֔ינוּ כִּ֥י יְהוָ֖ה הָאֱלֹהִֽים׃פ
