Chapter 23

Phonetic (Hebrew): vֽayehiy֙ miyּami֣ym rabּi֔ym 'a֠charey 'ashsher-heni֨ycha yehva֧h leyishsera'e֛l mikּal-'oyebeyhe֖m misּabi֑yb viyhoshshu֣'a zaqe֔n bּa֖ bּayּamiֽym׃

Edified Edition (EDE)After a long time had passed and the LORD had given Israel rest from all their enemies around them, Joshua, by then a very old man,

וַֽיְהִי֙ מִיָּמִ֣ים רַבִּ֔ים אַ֠חֲרֵי אֲשֶׁר־הֵנִ֨יחַ יְהוָ֧ה לְיִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל מִכָּל־אֹיְבֵיהֶ֖ם מִסָּבִ֑יב וִיהוֹשֻׁ֣עַ זָקֵ֔ן בָּ֖א בַּיָּמִֽים׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiqera֤ yehoshshu֨'a֙ lekal-yishsera'e֔l lizeqenayv֙ ulera'shsha֔yv uleshshopeta֖yv uleshshoֽtera֑yv vayּo֣'mer 'alehe֔m 'ani֣y zaqa֔netּiy bּa֖'tiy bּayּamiֽym׃

Edified Edition (EDE)summoned all Israel, their elders, leaders, judges and officials, and said to them: "I am very old.

וַיִּקְרָ֤א יְהוֹשֻׁ֨עַ֙ לְכָל־יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל לִזְקֵנָיו֙ וּלְרָאשָׁ֔יו וּלְשֹׁפְטָ֖יו וּלְשֹֽׁטְרָ֑יו וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֲלֵהֶ֔ם אֲנִ֣י זָקַ֔נְתִּי בָּ֖אתִי בַּיָּמִֽים׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'atּe֣m re'iyte֗m 'et֩ kּal-'ashshe֨r 'ashsa֜h yehva֧h 'eloheyke֛m lekal-hagּoyi֥m ha'e֖lּeh mipּeneyke֑m kּi֚y yehva֣h 'eloheyke֔m h֖u hanּilecha֥m lakeֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)You yourselves have seen everything the LORD your God has done to all these nations for your sake; it was the LORD your God who fought for you.

וְאַתֶּ֣ם רְאִיתֶ֗ם אֵת֩ כָּל־אֲשֶׁ֨ר עָשָׂ֜ה יְהוָ֧ה אֱלֹהֵיכֶ֛ם לְכָל־הַגּוֹיִ֥ם הָאֵ֖לֶּה מִפְּנֵיכֶ֑ם כִּ֚י יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֵיכֶ֔ם ה֖וּא הַנִּלְחָ֥ם לָכֶֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): re'u֩ hipּa֨letּiy lake֜m 'eֽt-ha֠gּoyim hanּishshe'ari֥ym ha'e֛lּeh bּenachala֖h leshshibeteyke֑m min-hayּaredּe֗n vekal-hagּoyim֙ 'ashshe֣r hikera֔tּiy vehayּa֥m hagּad֖ol meb֥o hashshּaֽmeshsh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Remember how I have allotted as an inheritance for your tribes all the land of the nations that remain, the nations I conquered, between the Jordan and the Mediterranean Sea in the west.

רְאוּ֩ הִפַּ֨לְתִּי לָכֶ֜ם אֶֽת־הַ֠גּוֹיִם הַנִּשְׁאָרִ֥ים הָאֵ֛לֶּה בְּנַחֲלָ֖ה לְשִׁבְטֵיכֶ֑ם מִן־הַיַּרְדֵּ֗ן וְכָל־הַגּוֹיִם֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר הִכְרַ֔תִּי וְהַיָּ֥ם הַגָּד֖וֹל מְב֥וֹא הַשָּֽׁמֶשׁ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayhva֣h 'eloֽheyke֗m h֚u yehedּope֣m mipּeneyke֔m vehori֥yshsh 'ota֖m milּipeneyke֑m viֽyrishshetּem֙ 'et-'aretza֔m kּa'ashshe֥r dּibּe֛r yehva֥h 'eloheyke֖m lakeֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)The LORD your God himself will push them out for your sake. He will drive them out before you, and you will take possession of their land, as the LORD your God promised you.

וַיהוָ֣ה אֱלֹֽהֵיכֶ֗ם ה֚וּא יֶהְדֳּפֵ֣ם מִפְּנֵיכֶ֔ם וְהוֹרִ֥ישׁ אֹתָ֖ם מִלִּפְנֵיכֶ֑ם וִֽירִשְׁתֶּם֙ אֶת־אַרְצָ֔ם כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר דִּבֶּ֛ר יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֵיכֶ֖ם לָכֶֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vachazaqetּe֣m me'o֔d lishshemo֣r vela'ashs֔ot 'e֚t kּal-hakּat֔ub bּese֖per tּora֣t moshshe֑h lebiletּi֥y sur-mimּe֖nּu yami֥yn ushsemoֽ'vl׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"Be very strong; be careful to obey all that is written in the Book of the Law of Moses, without turning aside to the right or to the left.

וַחֲזַקְתֶּ֣ם מְאֹ֔ד לִשְׁמֹ֣ר וְלַעֲשׂ֔וֹת אֵ֚ת כָּל־הַכָּת֔וּב בְּסֵ֖פֶר תּוֹרַ֣ת מֹשֶׁ֑ה לְבִלְתִּ֥י סוּר־מִמֶּ֖נּוּ יָמִ֥ין וּשְׂמֹֽאול׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): lebiletּiy-bo'֙ bּagּoyi֣m ha'e֔lּeh hanּishshe'ari֥ym ha'e֖lּeh 'itּeke֑m ubeshshe֨m 'eloheyhe֤m lo'-tazekּi֨yru֙ velo֣ tashshebּi֔y'u velo֣ ta'abed֔um velo֥ tiֽshshetּachav֖u laheֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Do not associate with these nations that remain among you; do not invoke the names of their gods or swear by them. You must not serve them or bow down to them.

לְבִלְתִּי־בוֹא֙ בַּגּוֹיִ֣ם הָאֵ֔לֶּה הַנִּשְׁאָרִ֥ים הָאֵ֖לֶּה אִתְּכֶ֑ם וּבְשֵׁ֨ם אֱלֹהֵיהֶ֤ם לֹא־תַזְכִּ֨ירוּ֙ וְלֹ֣א תַשְׁבִּ֔יעוּ וְלֹ֣א תַעַבְד֔וּם וְלֹ֥א תִֽשְׁתַּחֲו֖וּ לָהֶֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): kּi֛y 'im-bּayhva֥h 'eloheyke֖m tּidebּa֑qu kּa'ashshe֣r 'ashsiyte֔m 'a֖d hayּ֥om hazּeֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)But you are to hold fast to the LORD your God, as you have until now.

כִּ֛י אִם־בַּיהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֵיכֶ֖ם תִּדְבָּ֑קוּ כַּאֲשֶׁ֣ר עֲשִׂיתֶ֔ם עַ֖ד הַיּ֥וֹם הַזֶּֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּ֤oreshsh yehvah֙ mipּeneyke֔m gּoyi֖m gּedoli֣ym va'atzumi֑ym ve'atּe֗m lo'-'a֤mad 'iyshsh֙ bּipeneyke֔m 'a֖d hayּ֥om hazּeֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"The LORD has driven out before you great and powerful nations; to this day no one has been able to withstand you.

וַיּ֤וֹרֶשׁ יְהוָה֙ מִפְּנֵיכֶ֔ם גּוֹיִ֖ם גְּדֹלִ֣ים וַעֲצוּמִ֑ים וְאַתֶּ֗ם לֹא־עָ֤מַד אִישׁ֙ בִּפְנֵיכֶ֔ם עַ֖ד הַיּ֥וֹם הַזֶּֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): iyshsh-'echa֥d mikּe֖m yiredּap-'a֑lep kּi֣y ׀ yehva֣h 'eloheyke֗m h֚u hanּilecha֣m lake֔m kּa'ashshe֖r dּibּe֥r lakeֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)One of you routs a thousand, because the LORD your God fights for you, just as he promised.

אִישׁ־אֶחָ֥ד מִכֶּ֖ם יִרְדָּף־אָ֑לֶף כִּ֣י ׀ יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֵיכֶ֗ם ה֚וּא הַנִּלְחָ֣ם לָכֶ֔ם כַּאֲשֶׁ֖ר דִּבֶּ֥ר לָכֶֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): venishshemaretּe֥m me'o֖d lenapeshshoֽteyke֑m le'ahaba֖h 'et-yehva֥h 'eloheykeֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)So be very careful to love the LORD your God.

וְנִשְׁמַרְתֶּ֥ם מְאֹ֖ד לְנַפְשֹֽׁתֵיכֶ֑ם לְאַהֲבָ֖ה אֶת־יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֵיכֶֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): kּi֣y ׀ 'im-shsh֣ob tּashsh֗ubu udebaqetּem֙ bּeye֨ter֙ hagּoyi֣m ha'e֔lּeh hanּishshe'ari֥ym ha'e֖lּeh 'itּeke֑m vehiֽtechatּanetּe֥m bּahe֛m uba'te֥m bּahe֖m vehe֥m bּakeֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"But if you turn away and ally yourselves with the survivors of these nations that remain among you and if you intermarry with them and associate with them,

כִּ֣י ׀ אִם־שׁ֣וֹב תָּשׁ֗וּבוּ וּדְבַקְתֶּם֙ בְּיֶ֨תֶר֙ הַגּוֹיִ֣ם הָאֵ֔לֶּה הַנִּשְׁאָרִ֥ים הָאֵ֖לֶּה אִתְּכֶ֑ם וְהִֽתְחַתַּנְתֶּ֥ם בָּהֶ֛ם וּבָאתֶ֥ם בָּהֶ֖ם וְהֵ֥ם בָּכֶֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): yad֨o'a֙ tּeֽde'֔u kּiy֩ lo֨ yosi֜yp yehva֣h 'eloheyke֗m lehori֛yshsh 'et-hagּoyi֥m ha'e֖lּeh milּipeneyke֑m vehay֨u lake֜m lepa֣ch ulemoqe֗shsh uleshshote֤t bּetzidּeykem֙ velitzenini֣ym bּe'eyneyke֔m 'ad-'abadeke֗m me֠'al ha'adama֤h hatּobah֙ hazּo֔'t 'ashsher֙ nata֣n lake֔m yehva֖h 'eloheykeֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)then you may be sure that the LORD your God will no longer drive out these nations before you. Instead, they will become snares and traps for you, whips on your backs and thorns in your eyes, until you perish from this good land, which the LORD your God has given you.

יָד֨וֹעַ֙ תֵּֽדְע֔וּ כִּי֩ לֹ֨א יוֹסִ֜יף יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֵיכֶ֗ם לְהוֹרִ֛ישׁ אֶת־הַגּוֹיִ֥ם הָאֵ֖לֶּה מִלִּפְנֵיכֶ֑ם וְהָי֨וּ לָכֶ֜ם לְפַ֣ח וּלְמוֹקֵ֗שׁ וּלְשֹׁטֵ֤ט בְּצִדֵּיכֶם֙ וְלִצְנִנִ֣ים בְּעֵינֵיכֶ֔ם עַד־אֲבָדְכֶ֗ם מֵ֠עַל הָאֲדָמָ֤ה הַטּוֹבָה֙ הַזֹּ֔את אֲשֶׁר֙ נָתַ֣ן לָכֶ֔ם יְהוָ֖ה אֱלֹהֵיכֶֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vehinּe֨h 'anoki֤y holeke֙ hayּ֔om bּede֖reke kּal-ha'a֑retz viyda'etּe֞m bּekal-lebabeke֣m ubekal-napeshsheke֗m kּi֣y loֽ'-napal֩ dּaba֨r 'echa֜d mikּo֣l ׀ hadּebari֣ym hatּobi֗ym 'ashshe֨r dּibּe֜r yehva֤h 'eloheykem֙ 'aleyke֔m hakּol֙ bּa֣'u lake֔m loֽ'-napa֥l mimּe֖nּu dּaba֥r 'echaֽd׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"Now I am about to go the way of all the earth. You know with all your heart and soul that not one of all the good promises the LORD your God gave you has failed. Every promise has been fulfiled; not one has failed.

וְהִנֵּ֨ה אָנֹכִ֤י הוֹלֵךְ֙ הַיּ֔וֹם בְּדֶ֖רֶךְ כָּל־הָאָ֑רֶץ וִידַעְתֶּ֞ם בְּכָל־לְבַבְכֶ֣ם וּבְכָל־נַפְשְׁכֶ֗ם כִּ֣י לֹֽא־נָפַל֩ דָּבָ֨ר אֶחָ֜ד מִכֹּ֣ל ׀ הַדְּבָרִ֣ים הַטּוֹבִ֗ים אֲשֶׁ֨ר דִּבֶּ֜ר יְהוָ֤ה אֱלֹהֵיכֶם֙ עֲלֵיכֶ֔ם הַכֹּל֙ בָּ֣אוּ לָכֶ֔ם לֹֽא־נָפַ֥ל מִמֶּ֖נּוּ דָּבָ֥ר אֶחָֽד׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vehaya֗h kּa'ashsher-bּa֤ 'aleykem֙ kּal-hadּaba֣r hatּ֔ob 'ashshe֥r dּibּe֛r yehva֥h 'eloheyke֖m 'aleyke֑m kּen֩ yabi֨y yehva֜h 'aleyke֗m 'e֚t kּal-hadּaba֣r hara֔ 'ad-hashshemiyd֣o 'oteke֗m me֠'al ha'adama֤h hatּobah֙ hazּo֔'t 'ashsher֙ nata֣n lake֔m yehva֖h 'eloheykeֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)But just as every good promise of the LORD your God has come true, so the LORD will bring on you all the evil he has threatened, until he has destroyed you from this good land he has given you.

וְהָיָ֗ה כַּאֲשֶׁר־בָּ֤א עֲלֵיכֶם֙ כָּל־הַדָּבָ֣ר הַטּ֔וֹב אֲשֶׁ֥ר דִּבֶּ֛ר יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֵיכֶ֖ם אֲלֵיכֶ֑ם כֵּן֩ יָבִ֨יא יְהוָ֜ה עֲלֵיכֶ֗ם אֵ֚ת כָּל־הַדָּבָ֣ר הָרָ֔ע עַד־הַשְׁמִיד֣וֹ אוֹתְכֶ֗ם מֵ֠עַל הָאֲדָמָ֤ה הַטּוֹבָה֙ הַזֹּ֔את אֲשֶׁר֙ נָתַ֣ן לָכֶ֔ם יְהוָ֖ה אֱלֹהֵיכֶֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): bּe֠'aberekem 'et-bּeri֨yt yehva֥h 'eloheykem֮ 'ashshe֣r tziua֣h 'etekem֒ vahalaketּe֗m va'abadetּem֙ 'elohi֣ym 'acheri֔ym vehishshetּachaviyte֖m lahe֑m vechara֤h 'ap-yehvah֙ bּake֔m va'abadetּe֣m mehera֔h me'al֙ ha'a֣retz hatּoba֔h 'ashshe֖r nata֥n lakeֽm׃p

Edified Edition (EDE)If you violate the covenant of the LORD your God, which he commanded you, and go and serve other gods and bow down to them, the LORD’s anger will burn against you, and you will quickly perish from the good land he has given you."

בְּ֠עָבְרְכֶם אֶת־בְּרִ֨ית יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֵיכֶם֮ אֲשֶׁ֣ר צִוָּ֣ה אֶתְכֶם֒ וַהֲלַכְתֶּ֗ם וַעֲבַדְתֶּם֙ אֱלֹהִ֣ים אֲחֵרִ֔ים וְהִשְׁתַּחֲוִיתֶ֖ם לָהֶ֑ם וְחָרָ֤ה אַף־יְהוָה֙ בָּכֶ֔ם וַאֲבַדְתֶּ֣ם מְהֵרָ֔ה מֵעַל֙ הָאָ֣רֶץ הַטּוֹבָ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֖ר נָתַ֥ן לָכֶֽם׃פ
