Chapter 3
1
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּashshekּem֩ yehoshshu֨'a bּabּo֜qer vayּise'֣u meֽhashshּitּi֗ym vayּabo֨'u֙ 'ad-hayּaredּe֔n h֖u vekal-bּene֣y yishsera'e֑l vayּali֥nu shsha֖m te֥rem ya'aboֽru׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Early in the morning Joshua and all the Israelites set out from Shittim and went to the Jordan, where they camped before crossing over.

וַיַּשְׁכֵּם֩ יְהוֹשֻׁ֨עַ בַּבֹּ֜קֶר וַיִּסְע֣וּ מֵֽהַשִּׁטִּ֗ים וַיָּבֹ֨אוּ֙ עַד־הַיַּרְדֵּ֔ן ה֖וּא וְכָל־בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וַיָּלִ֥נוּ שָׁ֖ם טֶ֥רֶם יַעֲבֹֽרוּ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehi֕y miqetze֖h shshelo֣shshet yami֑ym vayּa'aber֥u hashshּoteri֖ym bּeqe֥reb haֽmּachaneֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)After three days the officers went throughout the camp,

וַיְהִ֕י מִקְצֵ֖ה שְׁלֹ֣שֶׁת יָמִ֑ים וַיַּעַבְר֥וּ הַשֹּׁטְרִ֖ים בְּקֶ֥רֶב הַֽמַּחֲנֶֽה׃

3
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayetzau֮ 'et-ha'a֣m le'mor֒ kּire'ֽoteke֗m 'e֣t 'ar֤on bּeriyt-yehvah֙ 'elo֣heyke֔m vehakּoֽhaniym֙ haleviyּi֔m noshse'i֖ym 'ot֑o ve'atּe֗m tּise'u֙ mimּeq֣omeke֔m vahalaketּe֖m 'acharaֽyv׃
Edified Edition (EDE)giving orders to the people: "When you see the ark of the covenant [1] of the LORD your God, and the Levitical priests carrying it, you are to move out from your positions and follow it.

וַיְצַוּוּ֮ אֶת־הָעָ֣ם לֵאמֹר֒ כִּרְאֽוֹתְכֶ֗ם אֵ֣ת אֲר֤וֹן בְּרִית־יְהוָה֙ אֱלֹ֣הֵיכֶ֔ם וְהַכֹּֽהֲנִים֙ הַלְוִיִּ֔ם נֹשְׂאִ֖ים אֹת֑וֹ וְאַתֶּ֗ם תִּסְעוּ֙ מִמְּק֣וֹמְכֶ֔ם וַהֲלַכְתֶּ֖ם אַחֲרָֽיו׃

4
Phonetic (Hebrew): a֣ke ׀ rach֣oq yiheye֗h bּeֽyneykem֙ vbynv ubeyna֔yv kּe'alepּa֥yim 'amּa֖h bּamּidּa֑h 'aֽl-tּiqereb֣u 'ela֗yv lema֤'an 'ashsher-tּeֽde'u֙ 'et-hadּe֨reke֙ 'ashshe֣r tּeֽleku-ba֔hּ kּi֣y lo֧ 'abaretּe֛m bּadּe֖reke mitּem֥ol shshileshshֽom׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)Then you will know which way to go, since you have never been this way before. But keep a distance of about two thousand cubits between you and the ark; do not go near it."

אַ֣ךְ ׀ רָח֣וֹק יִהְיֶ֗ה בֵּֽינֵיכֶם֙ ובינו וּבֵינָ֔יו כְּאַלְפַּ֥יִם אַמָּ֖ה בַּמִּדָּ֑ה אַֽל־תִּקְרְב֣וּ אֵלָ֗יו לְמַ֤עַן אֲשֶׁר־תֵּֽדְעוּ֙ אֶת־הַדֶּ֨רֶךְ֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר תֵּֽלְכוּ־בָ֔הּ כִּ֣י לֹ֧א עֲבַרְתֶּ֛ם בַּדֶּ֖רֶךְ מִתְּמ֥וֹל שִׁלְשֽׁוֹם׃ס

5
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֧'mer yehoshshu֛'a 'el-ha'a֖m hiteqadּa֑shshu kּi֣y macha֗r ya'ashse֧h yehva֛h bּeqirebּeke֖m nipela'ֽot׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Joshua told the people, "Consecrate yourselves, for tomorrow the LORD will do amazing things among you."

וַיֹּ֧אמֶר יְהוֹשֻׁ֛עַ אֶל־הָעָ֖ם הִתְקַדָּ֑שׁוּ כִּ֣י מָחָ֗ר יַעֲשֶׂ֧ה יְהוָ֛ה בְּקִרְבְּכֶ֖ם נִפְלָאֽוֹת׃

6
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֤'mer yehoshshu֨'a֙ 'el-hakּohani֣ym le'mo֔r shse'u֙ 'et-'ar֣on habּeri֔yt ve'iber֖u lipene֣y ha'a֑m vayּishse'u֙ 'et-'ar֣on habּeri֔yt vayּelek֖u lipene֥y ha'aֽm׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)Joshua said to the priests, "Take up the ark of the covenant and pass on ahead of the people." So they took it up and went ahead of them.

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר יְהוֹשֻׁ֨עַ֙ אֶל־הַכֹּהֲנִ֣ים לֵאמֹ֔ר שְׂאוּ֙ אֶת־אֲר֣וֹן הַבְּרִ֔ית וְעִבְר֖וּ לִפְנֵ֣י הָעָ֑ם וַיִּשְׂאוּ֙ אֶת־אֲר֣וֹן הַבְּרִ֔ית וַיֵּלְכ֖וּ לִפְנֵ֥י הָעָֽם׃ס

7
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֤'mer yehvah֙ 'el-yehoshshu֔'a hayּ֣om hazּe֗h 'achel֙ gּadּeleka֔ bּe'eyne֖y kּal-yishsera'e֑l 'ashsher֙ yeֽde'֔un kּi֗y kּa'ashshe֥r hayi֛ytiy 'im-moshshe֖h 'eheye֥h 'imּaֽke׃
Edified Edition (EDE)And the LORD said to Joshua, "Today I will begin to exalt you in the eyes of all Israel, so they may know that I am with you as I was with Moses.

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר יְהוָה֙ אֶל־יְהוֹשֻׁ֔עַ הַיּ֣וֹם הַזֶּ֗ה אָחֵל֙ גַּדֶּלְךָ֔ בְּעֵינֵ֖י כָּל־יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל אֲשֶׁר֙ יֵֽדְע֔וּן כִּ֗י כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר הָיִ֛יתִי עִם־מֹשֶׁ֖ה אֶהְיֶ֥ה עִמָּֽךְ׃

8
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'atּa֗h tּetzaueh֙ 'et-hakּo֣hani֔ym noshse'e֥y 'arֽon-habּeri֖yt le'mo֑r kּebo'ake֗m 'ad-qetzeh֙ me֣y hayּaredּe֔n bּayּaredּe֖n tּa'amoֽdu׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)Tell the priests who carry the ark of the covenant: 'When you reach the edge of the Jordan’s waters, go and stand in the river.'"

וְאַתָּ֗ה תְּצַוֶּה֙ אֶת־הַכֹּ֣הֲנִ֔ים נֹשְׂאֵ֥י אֲרֽוֹן־הַבְּרִ֖ית לֵאמֹ֑ר כְּבֹאֲכֶ֗ם עַד־קְצֵה֙ מֵ֣י הַיַּרְדֵּ֔ן בַּיַּרְדֵּ֖ן תַּעֲמֹֽדוּ׃פ

9
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֥'mer yehoshshu֖'a 'el-bּene֣y yishsera'e֑l gּo֣shshu he֔nּah veshshime'֕u 'et-dּibere֖y yehva֥h 'eloֽheykeֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Joshua said to the Israelites, "Come here and listen to the words of the LORD your God.

וַיֹּ֥אמֶר יְהוֹשֻׁ֖עַ אֶל־בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל גֹּ֣שׁוּ הֵ֔נָּה וְשִׁמְע֕וּ אֶת־דִּבְרֵ֖י יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹֽהֵיכֶֽם׃

10
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֣'mer yehoshshu֔'a bּezo't֙ tּeֽde'֔un kּi֛y 'e֥l cha֖y bּeqirebּeke֑m vehore֣shsh yori֣yshsh mi֠pּeneykem 'et-hakּena'ani֨y ve'et-hachitּi֜y ve'et-hachiui֗y ve'et-hapּerizּiy֙ ve'et-hagּiregּashshi֔y veha'emori֖y vehayebusiֽy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)This is how you will know that the living God is among you and that he will certainly drive out before you the Canaanites, Hittites, Hivites, Perizzites, Girgashites, Amorites and Jebusites.

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר יְהוֹשֻׁ֔עַ בְּזֹאת֙ תֵּֽדְע֔וּן כִּ֛י אֵ֥ל חַ֖י בְּקִרְבְּכֶ֑ם וְהוֹרֵ֣שׁ יוֹרִ֣ישׁ מִ֠פְּנֵיכֶם אֶת־הַכְּנַעֲנִ֨י וְאֶת־הַחִתִּ֜י וְאֶת־הַחִוִּ֗י וְאֶת־הַפְּרִזִּי֙ וְאֶת־הַגִּרְגָּשִׁ֔י וְהָאֱמֹרִ֖י וְהַיְבוּסִֽי׃

11
Phonetic (Hebrew): hinּeh֙ 'ar֣on habּeri֔yt 'ad֖on kּal-ha'a֑retz 'obe֥r lipeneyke֖m bּayּaredּeֽn׃
Edified Edition (EDE)See, the ark of the covenant of the LORD of all the earth will go into the Jordan ahead of you.

הִנֵּה֙ אֲר֣וֹן הַבְּרִ֔ית אֲד֖וֹן כָּל־הָאָ֑רֶץ עֹבֵ֥ר לִפְנֵיכֶ֖ם בַּיַּרְדֵּֽן׃

12
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'atּa֗h qech֤u lakem֙ shshene֣y 'ashsa֣r 'i֔yshsh mishshּibete֖y yishsera'e֑l 'iyshsh-'echa֥d 'iyshsh-'echa֖d lashshּaֽbet׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Now then, choose twelve men from the tribes of Israel, one from each tribe.

וְעַתָּ֗ה קְח֤וּ לָכֶם֙ שְׁנֵ֣י עָשָׂ֣ר אִ֔ישׁ מִשִּׁבְטֵ֖י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל אִישׁ־אֶחָ֥ד אִישׁ־אֶחָ֖ד לַשָּֽׁבֶט׃

13
Phonetic (Hebrew): vehaya֡h kּen֣ocha kּapּ֣ot ragele֣y hakּohani֡ym noshse'ey֩ 'ar֨on yehva֜h 'ad֤on kּal-ha'a֨retz֙ bּeme֣y hayּaredּe֔n me֤y hayּaredּen֙ yikּa֣ret֔un hamּa֥yim hayּoredi֖ym milema֑'elah veya'amed֖u ne֥d 'echaֽd׃
Edified Edition (EDE)And as soon as the priests who carry the ark of the LORD, the LORD of all the earth, set foot in the Jordan, its waters flowing downstream will be cut off and stand up in a heap."

וְהָיָ֡ה כְּנ֣וֹחַ כַּפּ֣וֹת רַגְלֵ֣י הַכֹּהֲנִ֡ים נֹשְׂאֵי֩ אֲר֨וֹן יְהוָ֜ה אֲד֤וֹן כָּל־הָאָ֨רֶץ֙ בְּמֵ֣י הַיַּרְדֵּ֔ן מֵ֤י הַיַּרְדֵּן֙ יִכָּ֣רֵת֔וּן הַמַּ֥יִם הַיֹּרְדִ֖ים מִלְמָ֑עְלָה וְיַעַמְד֖וּ נֵ֥ד אֶחָֽד׃

14
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehi֗y bּineso֤'a ha'am֙ me'a֣holeyhe֔m la'abo֖r 'et-hayּaredּe֑n vehakּohani֗ym noֽshse'e֛y ha'ar֥on habּeri֖yt lipene֥y ha'aֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)So when the people broke camp to cross the Jordan, the priests carrying the ark of the covenant went ahead of them.

וַיְהִ֗י בִּנְסֹ֤עַ הָעָם֙ מֵאָ֣הֳלֵיהֶ֔ם לַעֲבֹ֖ר אֶת־הַיַּרְדֵּ֑ן וְהַכֹּהֲנִ֗ים נֹֽשְׂאֵ֛י הָאָר֥וֹן הַבְּרִ֖ית לִפְנֵ֥י הָעָֽם׃

15
Phonetic (Hebrew): ukeb֞o noshse'e֤y haֽ'aron֙ 'ad-hayּaredּe֔n veragele֤y hakּoֽhaniym֙ noshse'e֣y haֽ'ar֔on nitebּel֖u bּiqetze֣h hamּa֑yim vehayּaredּe֗n male'֙ 'al-kּal-gּedota֔yv kּo֖l yeme֥y qatziֽyr׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Now the Jordan is in flood stage all during harvest. Yet as soon as the priests who carried the ark reached the Jordan and their feet touched the river’s edge,

וּכְב֞וֹא נֹשְׂאֵ֤י הָֽאָרוֹן֙ עַד־הַיַּרְדֵּ֔ן וְרַגְלֵ֤י הַכֹּֽהֲנִים֙ נֹשְׂאֵ֣י הָֽאָר֔וֹן נִטְבְּל֖וּ בִּקְצֵ֣ה הַמָּ֑יִם וְהַיַּרְדֵּ֗ן מָלֵא֙ עַל־כָּל־גְּדוֹתָ֔יו כֹּ֖ל יְמֵ֥י קָצִֽיר׃

16
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa'amed֡u hamּayim֩ hayּoredi֨ym milema֜'elah qa֣mu ned-'echa֗d hareche֨q me'o֜d b'dm meֽ'ada֤m ha'iyr֙ 'ashsher֙ mitzּa֣d tzaֽreta֔n vehayּoredi֗ym 'a֣l ya֧m ha'araba֛h yam-hamּe֖lach tּa֣mּu nikera֑tu veha'a֥m 'aber֖u ne֥ged yeriychֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)the water from upstream stopped flowing. It piled up in a heap a great distance away, at a town called Adam in the vicinity of Zarethan, while the water flowing down to the Sea of the Arabah (that is, the Dead Sea) was completely cut off. So the people crossed over opposite Jericho.

וַיַּעַמְד֡וּ הַמַּיִם֩ הַיֹּרְדִ֨ים מִלְמַ֜עְלָה קָ֣מוּ נֵד־אֶחָ֗ד הַרְחֵ֨ק מְאֹ֜ד באדם מֵֽאָדָ֤ם הָעִיר֙ אֲשֶׁר֙ מִצַּ֣ד צָֽרְתָ֔ן וְהַיֹּרְדִ֗ים עַ֣ל יָ֧ם הָעֲרָבָ֛ה יָם־הַמֶּ֖לַח תַּ֣מּוּ נִכְרָ֑תוּ וְהָעָ֥ם עָבְר֖וּ נֶ֥גֶד יְרִיחֽוֹ׃

17
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa'amed֣u hakּohani֡ym no֠shse'ey ha'ar֨on bּeriyt-yehva֜h bּechֽaraba֛h bּet֥oke hayּaredּe֖n hake֑n vekal-yishsera'e֗l 'oֽberiym֙ bּecha֣raba֔h 'a֤d 'ashsher-tּa֨mּu֙ kּal-hagּ֔oy la'abo֖r 'et-hayּaredּeֽn׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The priests who carried the ark of the covenant of the LORD stopped in the middle of the Jordan and stood on dry ground, while all Israel passed by until the whole nation had completed the crossing on dry ground.

וַיַּעַמְד֣וּ הַכֹּהֲנִ֡ים נֹ֠שְׂאֵי הָאָר֨וֹן בְּרִית־יְהוָ֜ה בֶּחָֽרָבָ֛ה בְּת֥וֹךְ הַיַּרְדֵּ֖ן הָכֵ֑ן וְכָל־יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל עֹֽבְרִים֙ בֶּחָ֣רָבָ֔ה עַ֤ד אֲשֶׁר־תַּ֨מּוּ֙ כָּל־הַגּ֔וֹי לַעֲבֹ֖ר אֶת־הַיַּרְדֵּֽן׃
