Chapter 9
1
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehi֣y kishshemo֣'a kּaֽl-hamּelaki֡ym 'ashsher֩ bּe'e֨ber hayּaredּe֜n bּaha֣r ubashshּepela֗h ubekol֙ ch֚op hayּa֣m hagּad֔ol 'el-m֖ul halּeban֑on haֽchitּiy֙ veha֣'emori֔y haֽkּena'aniy֙ hapּerizּi֔y hachiui֖y vehayebusiֽy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Now when all the kings west of the Jordan heard about these things, those in the hill country, in the western foothills, and along the entire coast of the Mediterranean Sea as far as Lebanon (the kings of the Hittites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites),

וַיְהִ֣י כִשְׁמֹ֣עַ כָּֽל־הַמְּלָכִ֡ים אֲשֶׁר֩ בְּעֵ֨בֶר הַיַּרְדֵּ֜ן בָּהָ֣ר וּבַשְּׁפֵלָ֗ה וּבְכֹל֙ ח֚וֹף הַיָּ֣ם הַגָּד֔וֹל אֶל־מ֖וּל הַלְּבָנ֑וֹן הַֽחִתִּי֙ וְהָ֣אֱמֹרִ֔י הַֽכְּנַעֲנִי֙ הַפְּרִזִּ֔י הַחִוִּ֖י וְהַיְבוּסִֽי׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiֽteqabּetz֣u yachedּa֔v lehilּache֥m 'im-yehoshshu֖'a ve'im-yishsera'e֑l pּe֖h 'echaֽd׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)they came together to wage war against Joshua and Israel.

וַיִּֽתְקַבְּצ֣וּ יַחְדָּ֔ו לְהִלָּחֵ֥ם עִם־יְהוֹשֻׁ֖עַ וְעִם־יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל פֶּ֖ה אֶחָֽד׃פ

Phonetic (Hebrew): veyoshshebe֨y gibe'֜on shshame'֗u 'et֩ 'ashshe֨r 'ashsa֧h yehoshshu֛'a liֽyriych֖o vela'aֽy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)However, when the people of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done to Jericho and Ai,

וְיֹשְׁבֵ֨י גִבְע֜וֹן שָׁמְע֗וּ אֵת֩ אֲשֶׁ֨ר עָשָׂ֧ה יְהוֹשֻׁ֛עַ לִֽירִיח֖וֹ וְלָעָֽי׃

4
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa'ashs֤u gam-he֨mּah֙ bּe'arema֔h vayּelek֖u vayּitzetayּa֑ru vayּiqech֞u shsaqּi֤ym bּaliym֙ lacham֣oreyhe֔m veno'd֥ot ya֨yin֙ bּali֔ym umebuqּa'i֖ym umetzorariֽym׃
Edified Edition (EDE)they resorted to a ruse [1]: They went as a delegation whose donkeys were loaded with worn-out sacks and old wineskins, cracked and mended.

וַיַּעֲשׂ֤וּ גַם־הֵ֨מָּה֙ בְּעָרְמָ֔ה וַיֵּלְכ֖וּ וַיִּצְטַיָּ֑רוּ וַיִּקְח֞וּ שַׂקִּ֤ים בָּלִים֙ לַחֲמ֣וֹרֵיהֶ֔ם וְנֹאד֥וֹת יַ֨יִן֙ בָּלִ֔ים וּמְבֻקָּעִ֖ים וּמְצֹרָרִֽים׃

5
Phonetic (Hebrew): une'al֨ot bּal֤ot umetulּa'ot֙ bּerageleyhe֔m ushselam֥ot bּal֖ot 'aleyhe֑m vekol֙ le֣chem tzeyda֔m yabe֖shsh haya֥h niqּudiֽym׃
Edified Edition (EDE)They put worn and patched sandals on their feet and wore old clothes. All the bread of their food supply was dry and mouldy.

וּנְעָל֨וֹת בָּל֤וֹת וּמְטֻלָּאוֹת֙ בְּרַגְלֵיהֶ֔ם וּשְׂלָמ֥וֹת בָּל֖וֹת עֲלֵיהֶ֑ם וְכֹל֙ לֶ֣חֶם צֵידָ֔ם יָבֵ֖שׁ הָיָ֥ה נִקֻּדִֽים׃

6
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּelek֧u 'el-yehoshshu֛'a 'el-haֽmּachane֖h hagּilegּa֑l vayּo'mer֨u 'ela֜yv ve'el-'i֣yshsh yishsera'e֗l me'e֤retz rechoqah֙ bּa֔'nu ve'atּa֖h kּiretu-la֥nu beriֽyt׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then they went to Joshua in the camp at Gilgal and said to him and the Israelites, "We have come from a distant country; make a treaty with us."

וַיֵּלְכ֧וּ אֶל־יְהוֹשֻׁ֛עַ אֶל־הַֽמַּחֲנֶ֖ה הַגִּלְגָּ֑ל וַיֹּאמְר֨וּ אֵלָ֜יו וְאֶל־אִ֣ישׁ יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל מֵאֶ֤רֶץ רְחוֹקָה֙ בָּ֔אנוּ וְעַתָּ֖ה כִּרְתוּ־לָ֥נוּ בְרִֽית׃

7
Phonetic (Hebrew): vy'mrv vayּo֥'mer 'iֽyshsh-yishsera'e֖l 'el-hachiui֑y 'ula֗y bּeqirebּiy֙ 'atּa֣h yoshshe֔b ve'e֖yke 'krvt 'eֽkerat-leka֥ beriֽyt׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The Israelites said to the Hivites, "But perhaps you live near us, so how can we make a treaty with you?"

ויאמרו וַיֹּ֥אמֶר אִֽישׁ־יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל אֶל־הַחִוִּ֑י אוּלַ֗י בְּקִרְבִּי֙ אַתָּ֣ה יוֹשֵׁ֔ב וְאֵ֖יךְ אכרות אֶֽכְרָת־לְךָ֥ בְרִֽית׃

8
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo'mer֥u 'el-yehoshshu֖'a 'abade֣yka 'ana֑chenu vayּo֨'mer 'alehe֧m yehoshshu֛'a mi֥y 'atּe֖m ume'a֥yin tּaboֽ'u׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"We are your servants," they said to Joshua. But Joshua asked, "Who are you and where do you come from?"

וַיֹּאמְר֥וּ אֶל־יְהוֹשֻׁ֖עַ עֲבָדֶ֣יךָ אֲנָ֑חְנוּ וַיֹּ֨אמֶר אֲלֵהֶ֧ם יְהוֹשֻׁ֛עַ מִ֥י אַתֶּ֖ם וּמֵאַ֥יִן תָּבֹֽאוּ׃

9
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo'mer֣u 'ela֗yv me'e֨retz rechoqa֤h me'od֙ bּa֣'u 'abade֔yka leshshe֖m yehva֣h 'elohe֑yka kּiֽy-shshama֣'enu shshame'֔o ve'e֛t kּal-'ashshe֥r 'ashsa֖h bּemitzeraֽyim׃
Edified Edition (EDE)They answered: "Your servants have come from a very distant country because of the fame of the LORD your God. For we have heard reports of him: all that he did in Egypt,

וַיֹּאמְר֣וּ אֵלָ֗יו מֵאֶ֨רֶץ רְחוֹקָ֤ה מְאֹד֙ בָּ֣אוּ עֲבָדֶ֔יךָ לְשֵׁ֖ם יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֶ֑יךָ כִּֽי־שָׁמַ֣עְנוּ שָׁמְע֔וֹ וְאֵ֛ת כָּל־אֲשֶׁ֥ר עָשָׂ֖ה בְּמִצְרָֽיִם׃

10
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'e֣t ׀ kּal-'ashshe֣r 'ashsa֗h lishsheney֙ maleke֣y ha'emori֔y 'ashshe֖r bּe'e֣ber hayּaredּe֑n lesiychon֙ me֣leke cheshshebּ֔on ule'֥og meֽleke-habּashsha֖n 'ashshe֥r bּe'ashshetּarֽot׃
Edified Edition (EDE)and all that he did to the two kings of the Amorites east of the Jordan, Sihon king of Heshbon, and Og king of Bashan, who reigned in Ashtaroth.

וְאֵ֣ת ׀ כָּל־אֲשֶׁ֣ר עָשָׂ֗ה לִשְׁנֵי֙ מַלְכֵ֣י הָאֱמֹרִ֔י אֲשֶׁ֖ר בְּעֵ֣בֶר הַיַּרְדֵּ֑ן לְסִיחוֹן֙ מֶ֣לֶךְ חֶשְׁבּ֔וֹן וּלְע֥וֹג מֶֽלֶךְ־הַבָּשָׁ֖ן אֲשֶׁ֥ר בְּעַשְׁתָּרֽוֹת׃

11
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo'mer֣u 'ele֡ynu zeֽqeyneynu֩ vekal-yoshshebe֨y 'aretze֜nu le'mo֗r qech֨u beyedeke֤m tzeydah֙ ladּe֔reke ulek֖u liqera'ta֑m va'amaretּe֤m 'aleyhem֙ 'abedeyke֣m 'ana֔chenu ve'atּa֖h kּiretu-la֥nu beriֽyt׃
Edified Edition (EDE)And our elders and all those living in our country said to us, 'Take provisions for your journey; go and meet them and say to them, "We are your servants; make a treaty with us."'

וַיֹּאמְר֣וּ אֵלֵ֡ינוּ זְֽקֵינֵינוּ֩ וְכָל־יֹשְׁבֵ֨י אַרְצֵ֜נוּ לֵאמֹ֗ר קְח֨וּ בְיֶדְכֶ֤ם צֵידָה֙ לַדֶּ֔רֶךְ וּלְכ֖וּ לִקְרָאתָ֑ם וַאֲמַרְתֶּ֤ם אֲלֵיהֶם֙ עַבְדֵיכֶ֣ם אֲנַ֔חְנוּ וְעַתָּ֖ה כִּרְתוּ־לָ֥נוּ בְרִֽית׃

12
Phonetic (Hebrew): ze֣h ׀ lacheme֗nu cha֞m hitzetayּa֤denu 'oto֙ mibּa֣tּe֔ynu bּey֥om tze'te֖nu lale֣ket 'aleyke֑m ve'atּah֙ hinּe֣h yabe֔shsh vehaya֖h niqּudiֽym׃
Edified Edition (EDE)This bread of ours was warm when we packed it at home on the day we left to come to you. But now see how dry and mouldy it is.

זֶ֣ה ׀ לַחְמֵ֗נוּ חָ֞ם הִצְטַיַּ֤דְנוּ אֹתוֹ֙ מִבָּ֣תֵּ֔ינוּ בְּי֥וֹם צֵאתֵ֖נוּ לָלֶ֣כֶת אֲלֵיכֶ֑ם וְעַתָּה֙ הִנֵּ֣ה יָבֵ֔שׁ וְהָיָ֖ה נִקֻּדִֽים׃

13
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'e֨lּeh no'd֤ot hayּa֨yin֙ 'ashshe֣r milּe֣'nu chadashshi֔ym vehinּe֖h hitebּaqּa֑'u ve'e֤lּeh shsalemote֨ynu֙ une'ale֔ynu bּal֕u mero֥b hadּe֖reke me'oֽd׃
Edified Edition (EDE)And these wineskins that we filled were new, but see how cracked they are. And our clothes and sandals are worn out by the very long journey."

וְאֵ֨לֶּה נֹאד֤וֹת הַיַּ֨יִן֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר מִלֵּ֣אנוּ חֲדָשִׁ֔ים וְהִנֵּ֖ה הִתְבַּקָּ֑עוּ וְאֵ֤לֶּה שַׂלְמוֹתֵ֨ינוּ֙ וּנְעָלֵ֔ינוּ בָּל֕וּ מֵרֹ֥ב הַדֶּ֖רֶךְ מְאֹֽד׃

14
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiqech֥u haֽ'anashshi֖ym mitzּeyda֑m ve'et-pּi֥y yehva֖h lo֥ shsha'aֽlu׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The Israelites sampled their provisions but did not consult the LORD.

וַיִּקְח֥וּ הָֽאֲנָשִׁ֖ים מִצֵּידָ֑ם וְאֶת־פִּ֥י יְהוָ֖ה לֹ֥א שָׁאָֽלוּ׃

15
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֨'ashs lahe֤m yehoshshu֨'a֙ shshal֔om vayּikero֥t lahe֛m bּeri֖yt lechayּota֑m vayּishshּabe'֣u lahe֔m neshsiy'e֖y ha'edaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then Joshua made a treaty of peace with them to let them live, and the leaders of the assembly ratified it by oath.

וַיַּ֨עַשׂ לָהֶ֤ם יְהוֹשֻׁ֨עַ֙ שָׁל֔וֹם וַיִּכְרֹ֥ת לָהֶ֛ם בְּרִ֖ית לְחַיּוֹתָ֑ם וַיִּשָּׁבְע֣וּ לָהֶ֔ם נְשִׂיאֵ֖י הָעֵדָֽה׃

16
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehi֗y miqetzeh֙ shshelo֣shshet yami֔ym 'achare֕y 'ashsher-kּaret֥u lahe֖m bּeri֑yt vaֽyּishsheme'֗u kּiy-qerobi֥ym hem֙ 'ela֔yv ubeqirebּ֖o he֥m yoshshebiֽym׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Three days after they made the treaty with the Gibeonites, the Israelites heard that they were neighbours, living near them.

וַיְהִ֗י מִקְצֵה֙ שְׁלֹ֣שֶׁת יָמִ֔ים אַחֲרֵ֕י אֲשֶׁר־כָּרְת֥וּ לָהֶ֖ם בְּרִ֑ית וַֽיִּשְׁמְע֗וּ כִּי־קְרֹבִ֥ים הֵם֙ אֵלָ֔יו וּבְקִרְבּ֖וֹ הֵ֥ם יֹשְׁבִֽים׃

17
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּise'֣u beneֽy-yishsera'e֗l vayּabo֛'u 'el-'areyhe֖m bּayּ֣om hashshּeliyshshi֑y ve'areyhem֙ gּibe'֣on vehakּepiyra֔h ube'er֖ot veqireya֥t ye'ariֽym׃
Edified Edition (EDE)So the Israelites set out and on the third day came to their cities: Gibeon, Kephirah, Beeroth and Kiriath Jearim.

וַיִּסְע֣וּ בְנֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל וַיָּבֹ֛אוּ אֶל־עָרֵיהֶ֖ם בַּיּ֣וֹם הַשְּׁלִישִׁ֑י וְעָרֵיהֶם֙ גִּבְע֣וֹן וְהַכְּפִירָ֔ה וּבְאֵר֖וֹת וְקִרְיַ֥ת יְעָרִֽים׃

18
Phonetic (Hebrew): velo֤ hikּum֙ bּene֣y yishsera'e֔l kּiֽy-nishshebּe'֤u lahem֙ neshsiy'e֣y haֽ'eda֔h bּaֽyhva֖h 'elohe֣y yishsera'e֑l vayּilּo֥nu kal-ha'eda֖h 'al-hanּeshsiy'iֽym׃
Edified Edition (EDE)But the Israelites did not attack them, because the leaders of the assembly had sworn an oath to them by the LORD, the God of Israel. The whole assembly grumbled against the leaders,

וְלֹ֤א הִכּוּם֙ בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל כִּֽי־נִשְׁבְּע֤וּ לָהֶם֙ נְשִׂיאֵ֣י הָֽעֵדָ֔ה בַּֽיהוָ֖ה אֱלֹהֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וַיִּלֹּ֥נוּ כָל־הָעֵדָ֖ה עַל־הַנְּשִׂיאִֽים׃

19
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo'mer֤u kal-hanּeshsiy'iym֙ 'el-kּal-ha֣'eda֔h 'ana֨chenu֙ nishshebּa֣'enu lahe֔m bּaֽyhva֖h 'elohe֣y yishsera'e֑l ve'atּa֕h lo֥ nuka֖l linegּo֥'a bּaheֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)but all the leaders answered, "We have given them our oath by the LORD, the God of Israel, and we cannot touch them now.

וַיֹּאמְר֤וּ כָל־הַנְּשִׂיאִים֙ אֶל־כָּל־הָ֣עֵדָ֔ה אֲנַ֨חְנוּ֙ נִשְׁבַּ֣עְנוּ לָהֶ֔ם בַּֽיהוָ֖ה אֱלֹהֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וְעַתָּ֕ה לֹ֥א נוּכַ֖ל לִנְגֹּ֥עַ בָּהֶֽם׃

20
Phonetic (Hebrew): zo֛'t na'ashse֥h lahe֖m vehachaye֣h 'ota֑m veloֽ'-yiֽheye֤h 'ale֨ynu֙ qe֔tzep 'al-hashshּebu'a֖h 'ashsher-nishshebּa֥'enu laheֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)This is what we will do to them: We will let them live, so that God’s wrath will not fall on us for breaking the oath we swore to them."

זֹ֛את נַעֲשֶׂ֥ה לָהֶ֖ם וְהַחֲיֵ֣ה אוֹתָ֑ם וְלֹֽא־יִֽהְיֶ֤ה עָלֵ֨ינוּ֙ קֶ֔צֶף עַל־הַשְּׁבוּעָ֖ה אֲשֶׁר־נִשְׁבַּ֥עְנוּ לָהֶֽם׃

21
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo'mer֧u 'aleyhe֛m hanּeshsiy'i֖ym yiֽchey֑u va֠yּiֽheyu chotebe֨y 'etzi֤ym veshshoֽ'abey-ma֨yim֙ lekal-ha֣'eda֔h kּa'ashshe֛r dּibּer֥u lahe֖m hanּeshsiy'iֽym׃
Edified Edition (EDE)They continued, "Let them live, but let them be woodcutters and water carriers in the service of the whole assembly, just as the leaders have promised them."

וַיֹּאמְר֧וּ אֲלֵיהֶ֛ם הַנְּשִׂיאִ֖ים יִֽחְי֑וּ וַ֠יִּֽהְיוּ חֹטְבֵ֨י עֵצִ֤ים וְשֹֽׁאֲבֵי־מַ֨יִם֙ לְכָל־הָ֣עֵדָ֔ה כַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר דִּבְּר֥וּ לָהֶ֖ם הַנְּשִׂיאִֽים׃

22
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiqera֤ lahem֙ yehoshshu֔'a vayedabּe֥r 'aleyhe֖m le'mo֑r lamּah֩ rimּiyte֨m 'ota֜nu le'mo֗r rechoqi֨ym 'ana֤chenu mikּem֙ me'o֔d ve'atּe֖m bּeqirebּe֥nu yoshshebiֽym׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then Joshua summoned the Gibeonites and said, "Why did you deceive us by saying, 'We live a long way from you,' when actually you live near us?

וַיִּקְרָ֤א לָהֶם֙ יְהוֹשֻׁ֔עַ וַיְדַבֵּ֥ר אֲלֵיהֶ֖ם לֵאמֹ֑ר לָמָּה֩ רִמִּיתֶ֨ם אֹתָ֜נוּ לֵאמֹ֗ר רְחוֹקִ֨ים אֲנַ֤חְנוּ מִכֶּם֙ מְאֹ֔ד וְאַתֶּ֖ם בְּקִרְבֵּ֥נוּ יֹשְׁבִֽים׃

23
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'atּa֖h 'aruri֣ym 'atּe֑m veloֽ'-yikּare֨t mikּe֜m 'e֗bed vechotebe֥y 'etzi֛ym veshshoֽ'abey-ma֖yim lebe֥yt 'elohaֽy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)You are now under a curse: You will never be released from service as woodcutters and water carriers for the house of my God."

וְעַתָּ֖ה אֲרוּרִ֣ים אַתֶּ֑ם וְלֹֽא־יִכָּרֵ֨ת מִכֶּ֜ם עֶ֗בֶד וְחֹטְבֵ֥י עֵצִ֛ים וְשֹֽׁאֲבֵי־מַ֖יִם לְבֵ֥ית אֱלֹהָֽי׃

24
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa'an֨u 'et-yehoshshu֜'a vayּo'mer֗u kּiy֩ hugּe֨d hugּa֤d la'abade֨yka֙ 'et֩ 'ashshe֨r tziua֜h yehva֤h 'elohe֨yka֙ 'et-moshshe֣h 'abedּ֔o late֤t lakem֙ 'et-kּal-ha'a֔retz ulehashshemi֛yd 'et-kּal-yoshshebe֥y ha'a֖retz mipּeneyke֑m vanּiyra֨ me'o֤d lenapeshshote֨ynu֙ mipּeneyke֔m vaֽnּa'ashse֖h 'et-hadּaba֥r hazּeֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)They answered Joshua, "Your servants were clearly told how the LORD your God had commanded his servant Moses to give you the whole land and to wipe out all its inhabitants from before you. So we feared for our lives because of you, and that is why we did this.

וַיַּעֲנ֨וּ אֶת־יְהוֹשֻׁ֜עַ וַיֹּאמְר֗וּ כִּי֩ הֻגֵּ֨ד הֻגַּ֤ד לַעֲבָדֶ֨יךָ֙ אֵת֩ אֲשֶׁ֨ר צִוָּ֜ה יְהוָ֤ה אֱלֹהֶ֨יךָ֙ אֶת־מֹשֶׁ֣ה עַבְדּ֔וֹ לָתֵ֤ת לָכֶם֙ אֶת־כָּל־הָאָ֔רֶץ וּלְהַשְׁמִ֛יד אֶת־כָּל־יֹשְׁבֵ֥י הָאָ֖רֶץ מִפְּנֵיכֶ֑ם וַנִּירָ֨א מְאֹ֤ד לְנַפְשֹׁתֵ֨ינוּ֙ מִפְּנֵיכֶ֔ם וַֽנַּעֲשֵׂ֖ה אֶת־הַדָּבָ֥ר הַזֶּֽה׃

25
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'atּa֖h hinen֣u beyade֑ka kּatּ֨ob vekayּashsha֧r bּe'eyne֛yka la'ashs֥ot la֖nu 'ashseֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)We are now in your hands. Do to us whatever seems good and right to you."

וְעַתָּ֖ה הִנְנ֣וּ בְיָדֶ֑ךָ כַּטּ֨וֹב וְכַיָּשָׁ֧ר בְּעֵינֶ֛יךָ לַעֲשׂ֥וֹת לָ֖נוּ עֲשֵֽׂה׃

26
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֥'ashs lahe֖m kּe֑n vayּatzּe֥l 'ota֛m miyּa֥d bּeneֽy-yishsera'e֖l velo֥ haragֽum׃
Edified Edition (EDE)So Joshua saved them from the Israelites, and they did not kill them.

וַיַּ֥עַשׂ לָהֶ֖ם כֵּ֑ן וַיַּצֵּ֥ל אוֹתָ֛ם מִיַּ֥ד בְּנֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל וְלֹ֥א הֲרָגֽוּם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּitּene֨m yehoshshu֜'a bּayּ֣om hah֗u chotebe֥y 'etzi֛ym veshsho֥'abey ma֖yim laֽ'eda֑h ulemizebּa֤ch yehvah֙ 'ad-hayּ֣om hazּe֔h 'el-hamּaq֖om 'ashshe֥r yibechaֽr׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)That day he made the Gibeonites woodcutters and water carriers for the assembly, to provide for the needs of the altar of the LORD at the place the LORD would choose. And that is what they are to this day.

וַיִּתְּנֵ֨ם יְהוֹשֻׁ֜עַ בַּיּ֣וֹם הַה֗וּא חֹטְבֵ֥י עֵצִ֛ים וְשֹׁ֥אֲבֵי מַ֖יִם לָֽעֵדָ֑ה וּלְמִזְבַּ֤ח יְהוָה֙ עַד־הַיּ֣וֹם הַזֶּ֔ה אֶל־הַמָּק֖וֹם אֲשֶׁ֥ר יִבְחָֽר׃פ
