Chapter 12
1
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּitzּa'eq֙ 'i֣yshsh 'epera֔yim vaֽyּa'abo֖r tzap֑onah vayּo'mer֨u leyipetּa֜ch madּ֣u'a ׀ 'aba֣retּa ׀ lehilּache֣m bּibeney-'amּ֗on vela֨nu֙ lo֤ qara֨'ta֙ lale֣ket 'imּa֔ke bּeyteka֕ nishsero֥p 'ale֖yka bּa'eֽshsh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The Ephraimite forces were called out, and they crossed over to Zaphon. They said to Jephthah, "Why did you go to fight the Ammonites without calling us to go with you? We’re going to burn down your house over your head."

וַיִּצָּעֵק֙ אִ֣ישׁ אֶפְרַ֔יִם וַֽיַּעֲבֹ֖ר צָפ֑וֹנָה וַיֹּאמְר֨וּ לְיִפְתָּ֜ח מַדּ֣וּעַ ׀ עָבַ֣רְתָּ ׀ לְהִלָּחֵ֣ם בִּבְנֵי־עַמּ֗וֹן וְלָ֨נוּ֙ לֹ֤א קָרָ֨אתָ֙ לָלֶ֣כֶת עִמָּ֔ךְ בֵּיתְךָ֕ נִשְׂרֹ֥ף עָלֶ֖יךָ בָּאֵֽשׁ׃

2
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֤'mer yipetּach֙ 'aleyhe֔m 'i֣yshsh ri֗yb hayi֛ytiy 'ani֛y ve'amּi֥y ubeneֽy-'amּ֖on me'o֑d va'eze'a֣q 'eteke֔m veloֽ'-hoshsha'etּe֥m 'oti֖y miyּadaֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Jephthah answered, "I and my people were engaged in a great struggle with the Ammonites, and although I called, you didn’t save me out of their hands.

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר יִפְתָּח֙ אֲלֵיהֶ֔ם אִ֣ישׁ רִ֗יב הָיִ֛יתִי אֲנִ֛י וְעַמִּ֥י וּבְנֵֽי־עַמּ֖וֹן מְאֹ֑ד וָאֶזְעַ֣ק אֶתְכֶ֔ם וְלֹֽא־הוֹשַׁעְתֶּ֥ם אוֹתִ֖י מִיָּדָֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vaֽ'ere'e֞h kּiֽy-'eyneka֣ moshshi֗y va'ashsi֨ymah napeshshi֤y bekapּiy֙ vaֽ'e'ebּerah֙ 'el-bּene֣y 'amּ֔on vayּitּene֥m yehva֖h bּeyadi֑y velama֞h 'aliyte֥m 'ela֛y hayּ֥om hazּe֖h lehilּa֥chem bּiֽy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)When I saw that you wouldn’t help, I took my life in my hands and crossed over to fight the Ammonites, and the LORD gave me the victory over them. Now why have you come up today to fight me?"

וָֽאֶרְאֶ֞ה כִּֽי־אֵינְךָ֣ מוֹשִׁ֗יע וָאָשִׂ֨ימָה נַפְשִׁ֤י בְכַפִּי֙ וָֽאֶעְבְּרָה֙ אֶל־בְּנֵ֣י עַמּ֔וֹן וַיִּתְּנֵ֥ם יְהוָ֖ה בְּיָדִ֑י וְלָמָ֞ה עֲלִיתֶ֥ם אֵלַ֛י הַיּ֥וֹם הַזֶּ֖ה לְהִלָּ֥חֶם בִּֽי׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiqebּo֤tz yipetּach֙ 'et-kּal-'aneshshe֣y gile'a֔d vayּilּa֖chem 'et-'epera֑yim vayּakּu֩ 'aneshshe֨y gile'a֜d 'et-'epera֗yim kּi֤y 'ameru֙ pּeliyte֤y 'epera֨yim֙ 'atּe֔m gּile'a֕d bּet֥oke 'epera֖yim bּet֥oke menashshּeֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Jephthah then called together all the men of Gilead and fought against Ephraim. The Gileadites struck them down because the Ephraimites had said, "You Gileadites are renegades from Ephraim and Manasseh."

וַיִּקְבֹּ֤ץ יִפְתָּח֙ אֶת־כָּל־אַנְשֵׁ֣י גִלְעָ֔ד וַיִּלָּ֖חֶם אֶת־אֶפְרָ֑יִם וַיַּכּוּ֩ אַנְשֵׁ֨י גִלְעָ֜ד אֶת־אֶפְרַ֗יִם כִּ֤י אָמְרוּ֙ פְּלִיטֵ֤י אֶפְרַ֨יִם֙ אַתֶּ֔ם גִּלְעָ֕ד בְּת֥וֹךְ אֶפְרַ֖יִם בְּת֥וֹךְ מְנַשֶּֽׁה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּilekּo֥d gּile'a֛d 'eֽt-ma'ebּer֥ot hayּaredּe֖n le'epera֑yim veֽ֠hayah kּi֣y yo'mer֞u pּeliyte֤y 'epera֨yim֙ 'e'ebo֔rah vayּo֨'meru l֧o 'aneshsheֽy-gile'a֛d haֽ'eperati֥y 'a֖tּah vayּo֥'meֽr ׀ loֽ'׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The Gileadites captured the fords of the Jordan leading to Ephraim, and whenever a survivor of Ephraim said, "Let me cross over," the men of Gilead would ask him, "Are you an Ephraimite?" If he replied, "No,"

וַיִּלְכֹּ֥ד גִּלְעָ֛ד אֶֽת־מַעְבְּר֥וֹת הַיַּרְדֵּ֖ן לְאֶפְרָ֑יִם וְֽ֠הָיָה כִּ֣י יֹאמְר֞וּ פְּלִיטֵ֤י אֶפְרַ֨יִם֙ אֶעֱבֹ֔רָה וַיֹּ֨אמְרוּ ל֧וֹ אַנְשֵֽׁי־גִלְעָ֛ד הַֽאֶפְרָתִ֥י אַ֖תָּה וַיֹּ֥אמֶֽר ׀ לֹֽא׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֣'meru lo֩ 'emar-na֨ shshibּo֜let vayּo֣'mer sibּo֗let velo֤ yakiyn֙ ledabּe֣r kּe֔n vayּo'chaz֣u 'ot֔o vayּishshechat֖uhu 'el-ma'ebּer֣ot hayּaredּe֑n vayּipּo֞l bּa'e֤t hahiy'֙ meֽ'epera֔yim 'arebּa'i֥ym ushshena֖yim 'aֽlep׃
Edified Edition (EDE)they said, "All right, say 'Shibboleth [1]'." If he said, "Sibboleth," because he could not pronounce the word correctly, they seized him and killed him at the fords of the Jordan. Forty-two thousand Ephraimites were killed at that time.

וַיֹּ֣אמְרוּ לוֹ֩ אֱמָר־נָ֨א שִׁבֹּ֜לֶת וַיֹּ֣אמֶר סִבֹּ֗לֶת וְלֹ֤א יָכִין֙ לְדַבֵּ֣ר כֵּ֔ן וַיֹּאחֲז֣וּ אוֹת֔וֹ וַיִּשְׁחָט֖וּהוּ אֶל־מַעְבְּר֣וֹת הַיַּרְדֵּ֑ן וַיִּפֹּ֞ל בָּעֵ֤ת הַהִיא֙ מֵֽאֶפְרַ֔יִם אַרְבָּעִ֥ים וּשְׁנַ֖יִם אָֽלֶף׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּishshepּo֥t yipetּa֛ch 'et-yishsera'e֖l shshe֣shsh shshani֑ym vayּa֗mat yipetּach֙ hagּile'adi֔y vayּiqּabe֖r bּe'are֥y gile'aֽd׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)Jephthah led Israel six years. Then Jephthah the Gileadite died and was buried in a town in Gilead.

וַיִּשְׁפֹּ֥ט יִפְתָּ֛ח אֶת־יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל שֵׁ֣שׁ שָׁנִ֑ים וַיָּ֗מָת יִפְתָּח֙ הַגִּלְעָדִ֔י וַיִּקָּבֵ֖ר בְּעָרֵ֥י גִלְעָֽד׃פ

8
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּishshepּo֤t 'aֽcharayv֙ 'et-yishsera'e֔l 'ibetza֖n mibּe֥yt laֽchem׃
Edified Edition (EDE)After him, Ibzan of Bethlehem led Israel.

וַיִּשְׁפֹּ֤ט אַֽחֲרָיו֙ אֶת־יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל אִבְצָ֖ן מִבֵּ֥ית לָֽחֶם׃

9
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehiy-l֞o shsheloshshi֣ym bּani֗ym ushsheloshshi֤ym bּanot֙ shshilּa֣ch hach֔utzah ushsheloshshi֣ym bּan֔ot hebi֥y lebana֖yv min-hach֑utz vayּishshepּo֥t 'et-yishsera'e֖l shshe֥ba shshaniֽym׃
Edified Edition (EDE)He had thirty sons and thirty daughters. He gave his daughters in marriage to those outside his clan, and for his sons he brought in thirty young women as wives from outside his clan. Ibzan led Israel seven years.

וַיְהִי־ל֞וֹ שְׁלֹשִׁ֣ים בָּנִ֗ים וּשְׁלֹשִׁ֤ים בָּנוֹת֙ שִׁלַּ֣ח הַח֔וּצָה וּשְׁלֹשִׁ֣ים בָּנ֔וֹת הֵבִ֥יא לְבָנָ֖יו מִן־הַח֑וּץ וַיִּשְׁפֹּ֥ט אֶת־יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל שֶׁ֥בַע שָׁנִֽים׃

10
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֣mat 'ibetza֔n vayּiqּabe֖r bּebe֥yt laֽchem׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)Then Ibzan died and was buried in Bethlehem.

וַיָּ֣מָת אִבְצָ֔ן וַיִּקָּבֵ֖ר בְּבֵ֥ית לָֽחֶם׃פ

11
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּishshepּo֤t 'ֽacharayv֙ 'et-yishsera'e֔l 'eyl֖on hazּebֽuloni֑y vayּishshepּo֥t 'et-yishsera'e֖l 'e֥shser shshaniֽym׃
Edified Edition (EDE)After him, Elon the Zebulunite led Israel ten years.

וַיִּשְׁפֹּ֤ט אַֽחֲרָיו֙ אֶת־יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל אֵיל֖וֹן הַזְּבֽוּלֹנִ֑י וַיִּשְׁפֹּ֥ט אֶת־יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל עֶ֥שֶׂר שָׁנִֽים׃

12
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֖mat 'el֣on hazּebֽuloni֑y vayּiqּabe֥r bּe'ayּal֖on bּe'e֥retz zebuluֽn׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)Then Elon died and was buried in Aijalon in the land of Zebulun.

וַיָּ֖מָת אֵל֣וֹן הַזְּבֽוּלֹנִ֑י וַיִּקָּבֵ֥ר בְּאַיָּל֖וֹן בְּאֶ֥רֶץ זְבוּלֻֽן׃פ

13
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּishshepּo֥t 'achara֖yv 'et-yishsera'e֑l 'abedּ֥on bּen-hilּe֖l hapּire'atoniֽy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)After him, Abdon son of Hillel, from Pirathon, led Israel.

וַיִּשְׁפֹּ֥ט אַחֲרָ֖יו אֶת־יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל עַבְדּ֥וֹן בֶּן־הִלֵּ֖ל הַפִּרְעָתוֹנִֽי׃

14
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehiy-l֞o 'arebּa'i֣ym bּani֗ym ushsheloshshiym֙ bּene֣y bani֔ym rokebi֖ym 'al-shshibe'i֣ym 'ayari֑m vayּishshepּo֥t 'et-yishsera'e֖l shshemone֥h shshaniֽym׃
Edified Edition (EDE)He had forty sons and thirty grandsons, who rode on seventy donkeys. He led Israel eight years.

וַיְהִי־ל֞וֹ אַרְבָּעִ֣ים בָּנִ֗ים וּשְׁלֹשִׁים֙ בְּנֵ֣י בָנִ֔ים רֹכְבִ֖ים עַל־שִׁבְעִ֣ים עֲיָרִ֑ם וַיִּשְׁפֹּ֥ט אֶת־יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל שְׁמֹנֶ֥ה שָׁנִֽים׃

15
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֛mat 'abedּ֥on bּen-hilּe֖l hapּire'atoni֑y vayּiqּabe֤r bּepire'aton֙ bּe'e֣retz 'epera֔yim bּeha֖r ha'amaleqiֽy׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)Then Abdon son of Hillel died and was buried at Pirathon in Ephraim, in the hill country of the Amalekites.

וַיָּ֛מָת עַבְדּ֥וֹן בֶּן־הִלֵּ֖ל הַפִּרְעָתוֹנִ֑י וַיִּקָּבֵ֤ר בְּפִרְעָתוֹן֙ בְּאֶ֣רֶץ אֶפְרַ֔יִם בְּהַ֖ר הָעֲמָלֵקִֽי׃פ
