Chapter 19
1
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehiy֙ bּayּami֣ym hahe֔m ume֖leke 'e֣yn bּeyishsera'e֑l vayehi֣y ׀ 'i֣yshsh levi֗y gּa֚r bּeyarekּete֣y har-'epera֔yim vayּiֽqּaֽch-lo֙ 'ishshּa֣h piyle֔geshsh mibּe֥yt le֖chem yehudaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)In those days Israel had no king. Now a Levite who lived in a remote area in the hill country of Ephraim took a concubine from Bethlehem in Judah.

וַיְהִי֙ בַּיָּמִ֣ים הָהֵ֔ם וּמֶ֖לֶךְ אֵ֣ין בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וַיְהִ֣י ׀ אִ֣ישׁ לֵוִ֗י גָּ֚ר בְּיַרְכְּתֵ֣י הַר־אֶפְרַ֔יִם וַיִּֽקַּֽח־לוֹ֙ אִשָּׁ֣ה פִילֶ֔גֶשׁ מִבֵּ֥ית לֶ֖חֶם יְהוּדָֽה׃

2
Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּizene֤h 'alayv֙ pּiֽylageshsh֔o vatּe֤leke meֽ'itּo֙ 'el-bּe֣yt 'abi֔yha 'el-bּe֥yt le֖chem yehuda֑h vatּehiy-shsha֕m yami֖ym 'arebּa'a֥h chodashshiֽym׃
Edified Edition (EDE)But she was unfaithful to him. She left him and went back to her father’s house in Bethlehem, Judah. After she had been there four months,

וַתִּזְנֶ֤ה עָלָיו֙ פִּֽילַגְשׁ֔וֹ וַתֵּ֤לֶךְ מֵֽאִתּוֹ֙ אֶל־בֵּ֣ית אָבִ֔יהָ אֶל־בֵּ֥ית לֶ֖חֶם יְהוּדָ֑ה וַתְּהִי־שָׁ֕ם יָמִ֖ים אַרְבָּעָ֥ה חֳדָשִֽׁים׃

3
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֨qam 'iyshsha֜hּ vayּe֣leke 'achare֗yha ledabּe֤r 'al-libּahּ֙ lhshybv lahashshiyba֔hּ vena'ar֥o 'imּ֖o vetze֣med chamori֑ym vatּebiy'e֨hu֙ bּe֣yt 'abi֔yha vayּire'e֨hu֙ 'abi֣y haֽnּa'ara֔h vayּishsema֖ch liqera'tֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)her husband went to her to persuade her to return. He had with him his servant and two donkeys. She took him into her father’s house, and when her father saw him, he gladly welcomed him.

וַיָּ֨קָם אִישָׁ֜הּ וַיֵּ֣לֶךְ אַחֲרֶ֗יהָ לְדַבֵּ֤ר עַל־לִבָּהּ֙ להשיבו לַהֲשִׁיבָ֔הּ וְנַעֲר֥וֹ עִמּ֖וֹ וְצֶ֣מֶד חֲמֹרִ֑ים וַתְּבִיאֵ֨הוּ֙ בֵּ֣ית אָבִ֔יהָ וַיִּרְאֵ֨הוּ֙ אֲבִ֣י הַֽנַּעֲרָ֔ה וַיִּשְׂמַ֖ח לִקְרָאתֽוֹ׃

4
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּechezaq-bּ֤o choֽteno֙ 'abi֣y haֽnּa'ara֔h vayּe֥shsheb 'itּ֖o shshelo֣shshet yami֑ym vayּo'kelu֙ vayּishshetּ֔u vayּali֖ynu shshaֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)His father-in-law, the girl's father, prevailed upon him to stay; so he remained with him three days, eating and drinking, and sleeping there.

וַיֶּחֱזַק־בּ֤וֹ חֹֽתְנוֹ֙ אֲבִ֣י הַֽנַּעֲרָ֔ה וַיֵּ֥שֶׁב אִתּ֖וֹ שְׁלֹ֣שֶׁת יָמִ֑ים וַיֹּאכְלוּ֙ וַיִּשְׁתּ֔וּ וַיָּלִ֖ינוּ שָֽׁם׃

5
Phonetic (Hebrew): vaֽyehiy֙ bּayּ֣om harebiy'i֔y vayּashshekּi֥ymu babּo֖qer vayּa֣qam lale֑ket vayּo'mer֩ 'abi֨y haֽnּa'ara֜h 'el-chatan֗o se'a֧d libּeka֛ pּat-le֖chem ve'acha֥r tּeleֽku׃
Edified Edition (EDE)On the fourth day they got up early and he prepared to leave, but the girl’s father said to his son-in-law, "Refresh yourself with something to eat; then you can go."

וַֽיְהִי֙ בַּיּ֣וֹם הָרְבִיעִ֔י וַיַּשְׁכִּ֥ימוּ בַבֹּ֖קֶר וַיָּ֣קָם לָלֶ֑כֶת וַיֹּאמֶר֩ אֲבִ֨י הַֽנַּעֲרָ֜ה אֶל־חֲתָנ֗וֹ סְעָ֧ד לִבְּךָ֛ פַּת־לֶ֖חֶם וְאַחַ֥ר תֵּלֵֽכוּ׃

6
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּeshsheb֗u vayּo'kel֧u shsheneyhe֛m yachedּa֖v vayּishshetּ֑u vayּo֜'mer 'abi֤y haֽnּa'arah֙ 'el-ha'i֔yshsh hֽo'el-na֥ veli֖yn veyita֥b libּeֽka׃
Edified Edition (EDE)So the two of them sat down to eat and drink together. Afterward the girl’s father said, "Please stay tonight and enjoy yourself."

וַיֵּשְׁב֗וּ וַיֹּאכְל֧וּ שְׁנֵיהֶ֛ם יַחְדָּ֖ו וַיִּשְׁתּ֑וּ וַיֹּ֜אמֶר אֲבִ֤י הַֽנַּעֲרָה֙ אֶל־הָאִ֔ישׁ הֽוֹאֶל־נָ֥א וְלִ֖ין וְיִטַ֥ב לִבֶּֽךָ׃

7
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֥qam ha'i֖yshsh lale֑ket vayּipetzar-bּo֙ choten֔o vayּa֖shshab vayּa֥len shshaֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)And when the man got up to go, his father-in-law persuaded him, so he stayed there that night also.

וַיָּ֥קָם הָאִ֖ישׁ לָלֶ֑כֶת וַיִּפְצַר־בּוֹ֙ חֹתְנ֔וֹ וַיָּ֖שָׁב וַיָּ֥לֶן שָֽׁם׃

8
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּashshekּe֨m bּabּo֜qer bּayּ֣om hachamiyshshiy֮ laleket֒ vayּo֣'mer ׀ 'abi֣y haֽnּa'ara֗h se'ad-na'֙ leba֣beka֔ vehiֽtemahemeh֖u 'ad-net֣ot hayּ֑om vayּo'kel֖u shsheneyheֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)On the morning of the fifth day, when he got up to left, the girl’s father said, "Refresh yourself. Wait till afternoon!" So the two of them ate together.

וַיַּשְׁכֵּ֨ם בַּבֹּ֜קֶר בַּיּ֣וֹם הַחֲמִישִׁי֮ לָלֶכֶת֒ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר ׀ אֲבִ֣י הַֽנַּעֲרָ֗ה סְעָד־נָא֙ לְבָ֣בְךָ֔ וְהִֽתְמַהְמְה֖וּ עַד־נְט֣וֹת הַיּ֑וֹם וַיֹּאכְל֖וּ שְׁנֵיהֶֽם׃

9
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֤qam ha'iyshsh֙ lale֔ket h֥u upiylageshsh֖o vena'ar֑o vayּo֣'mer l֣o choten֣o 'abi֣y haֽnּa'ara֡h hinּe֣h na'֩ rapa֨h hayּ֜om la'aro֗b liֽynu-na֞ hinּe֨h chan֤ot hayּom֙ li֥yn pּoh֙ veyiyta֣b lebabe֔ka vehishshekּametּe֤m machar֙ ledarekּeke֔m vehalaketּa֖ le'ohaleֽka׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then when the man, with his concubine and his servant, got up to leave, his father-in-law, the girl’s father, said, "Now look, it’s almost evening. Spend the night here; the day is nearly over. Stay and enjoy yourself. Early tomorrow morning you can get up and be on your way home."

וַיָּ֤קָם הָאִישׁ֙ לָלֶ֔כֶת ה֥וּא וּפִילַגְשׁ֖וֹ וְנַעֲר֑וֹ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר ל֣וֹ חֹתְנ֣וֹ אֲבִ֣י הַֽנַּעֲרָ֡ה הִנֵּ֣ה נָא֩ רָפָ֨ה הַיּ֜וֹם לַעֲרֹ֗ב לִֽינוּ־נָ֞א הִנֵּ֨ה חֲנ֤וֹת הַיּוֹם֙ לִ֥ין פֹּה֙ וְיִיטַ֣ב לְבָבֶ֔ךָ וְהִשְׁכַּמְתֶּ֤ם מָחָר֙ לְדַרְכְּכֶ֔ם וְהָלַכְתָּ֖ לְאֹהָלֶֽךָ׃

10
Phonetic (Hebrew): veloֽ'-'aba֤h ha'iyshsh֙ lal֔un vayּa֣qam vayּe֗leke vayּabo'֙ 'ad-no֣kach yeb֔us hi֖y yerushshala֑im ve'imּ֗o tze֤med chamoriym֙ chabushshi֔ym upiylageshsh֖o 'imּֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)But, unwilling to stay another night, the man left and went toward Jebus (that is, Jerusalem), with his two saddled donkeys and his concubine.

וְלֹֽא־אָבָ֤ה הָאִישׁ֙ לָל֔וּן וַיָּ֣קָם וַיֵּ֗לֶךְ וַיָּבֹא֙ עַד־נֹ֣כַח יְב֔וּס הִ֖יא יְרוּשָׁלִָ֑ם וְעִמּ֗וֹ צֶ֤מֶד חֲמוֹרִים֙ חֲבוּשִׁ֔ים וּפִילַגְשׁ֖וֹ עִמּֽוֹ׃

11
Phonetic (Hebrew): he֣m 'im-yeb֔us vehayּ֖om ra֣d me'o֑d vayּo֨'mer hanּa֜'ar 'el-'adona֗yv lekah-nּa֛ venas֛urah 'el-'iֽyr-hayebusi֥y hazּo֖'t venali֥yn bּaֽhּ׃
Edified Edition (EDE)When they were near Jebus and the day was almost gone, the servant said to his master, "Come, let’s stop at this city of the Jebusites and spend the night."

הֵ֣ם עִם־יְב֔וּס וְהַיּ֖וֹם רַ֣ד מְאֹ֑ד וַיֹּ֨אמֶר הַנַּ֜עַר אֶל־אֲדֹנָ֗יו לְכָה־נָּ֛א וְנָס֛וּרָה אֶל־עִֽיר־הַיְבוּסִ֥י הַזֹּ֖את וְנָלִ֥ין בָּֽהּ׃

12
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֤'mer 'elayv֙ 'adona֔yv lo֤ nasur֙ 'el-'i֣yr nakeri֔y 'ashshe֛r loֽ'-mibּene֥y yishsera'e֖l he֑nּah ve'aba֖renu 'ad-gּibe'aֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)His master replied, "No. We won’t go into any city whose people are not Israelites. We will go on to Gibeah."

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֵלָיו֙ אֲדֹנָ֔יו לֹ֤א נָסוּר֙ אֶל־עִ֣יר נָכְרִ֔י אֲשֶׁ֛ר לֹֽא־מִבְּנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל הֵ֑נָּה וְעָבַ֖רְנוּ עַד־גִּבְעָֽה׃

13
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֣'mer lena'ar֔o leka֥ veniqereba֖h bּe'acha֣d hamּeqom֑ot vela֥nּu bagּibe'a֖h '֥o baramaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)He added, "Come, let’s try to reach Gibeah or Ramah and spend the night in one of those places."

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר לְנַעֲר֔וֹ לְךָ֥ וְנִקְרְבָ֖ה בְּאַחַ֣ד הַמְּקֹמ֑וֹת וְלַ֥נּוּ בַגִּבְעָ֖ה א֥וֹ בָרָמָֽה׃

14
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa'aber֖u vayּele֑ku vatּabo֤ lahem֙ hashshּe֔meshsh 'e֥tzel hagּibe'a֖h 'ashshe֥r lebineyamiֽn׃
Edified Edition (EDE)So they went on, and the sun set as they neared Gibeah in Benjamin.

וַיַּעַבְר֖וּ וַיֵּלֵ֑כוּ וַתָּבֹ֤א לָהֶם֙ הַשֶּׁ֔מֶשׁ אֵ֥צֶל הַגִּבְעָ֖ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר לְבִנְיָמִֽן׃

15
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּasu֣ru shsha֔m lab֖o lal֣un bּagּibe'a֑h vayּabo֗ vayּe֨shsheb֙ bּirech֣ob ha'i֔yr ve'e֥yn 'i֛yshsh me'asּeֽp-'ota֥m habּa֖yetah lalֽun׃
Edified Edition (EDE)They stopped there to spend the night. They went and sat in the city square, but no one took them in for the night.

וַיָּסֻ֣רוּ שָׁ֔ם לָב֖וֹא לָל֣וּן בַּגִּבְעָ֑ה וַיָּבֹ֗א וַיֵּ֨שֶׁב֙ בִּרְח֣וֹב הָעִ֔יר וְאֵ֥ין אִ֛ישׁ מְאַסֵּֽף־אוֹתָ֥ם הַבַּ֖יְתָה לָלֽוּן׃

16
Phonetic (Hebrew): vehinּe֣h ׀ 'i֣yshsh zaqe֗n bּa֣ miֽn-ma'ashse֤hu min-hashsּadeh֙ bּa'e֔reb veha'iyshsh֙ meha֣r 'epera֔yim vehu'-ga֖r bּagּibe'a֑h ve'aneshshe֥y hamּaq֖om bּene֥y yemiyniֽy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)That evening an old man from the hill country of Ephraim, who was living in Gibeah (the inhabitants of the place were Benjamites), came in from his work in the fields.

וְהִנֵּ֣ה ׀ אִ֣ישׁ זָקֵ֗ן בָּ֣א מִֽן־מַעֲשֵׂ֤הוּ מִן־הַשָּׂדֶה֙ בָּעֶ֔רֶב וְהָאִישׁ֙ מֵהַ֣ר אֶפְרַ֔יִם וְהוּא־גָ֖ר בַּגִּבְעָ֑ה וְאַנְשֵׁ֥י הַמָּק֖וֹם בְּנֵ֥י יְמִינִֽי׃

17
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּishsּa֣ 'eyna֗yv vayּa֛re 'et-ha'i֥yshsh ha'ore֖cha bּirecho֣b ha'i֑yr vayּo֨'mer ha'i֧yshsh hazּaqe֛n 'a֥nah tele֖ke ume'a֥yin tּabֽo'׃
Edified Edition (EDE)When he looked and saw the traveller in the city square, the old man asked, "Where are you going? Where did you come from?"

וַיִּשָּׂ֣א עֵינָ֗יו וַיַּ֛רְא אֶת־הָאִ֥ישׁ הָאֹרֵ֖חַ בִּרְחֹ֣ב הָעִ֑יר וַיֹּ֨אמֶר הָאִ֧ישׁ הַזָּקֵ֛ן אָ֥נָה תֵלֵ֖ךְ וּמֵאַ֥יִן תָּבֽוֹא׃

18
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֣'mer 'ela֗yv 'oberi֨ym 'ana֜chenu mibּeֽyt-le֣chem yehudah֮ 'ad-yarekּete֣y har-'eperayim֒ mishshּa֣m 'ano֔kiy va'ele֕ke 'ad-bּe֥yt le֖chem yehuda֑h ve'et-bּe֤yt yehvah֙ 'ani֣y hole֔ke ve'e֣yn 'i֔yshsh me'asּe֥p 'oti֖y habּaֽyetah׃
Edified Edition (EDE)He answered, "We are on our way from Bethlehem in Judah to a remote area in the hill country of Ephraim where I live. I have been to Bethlehem in Judah and now I am going to the house of the LORD. No one has taken me in for the night.

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֵלָ֗יו עֹבְרִ֨ים אֲנַ֜חְנוּ מִבֵּֽית־לֶ֣חֶם יְהוּדָה֮ עַד־יַרְכְּתֵ֣י הַר־אֶפְרַיִם֒ מִשָּׁ֣ם אָנֹ֔כִי וָאֵלֵ֕ךְ עַד־בֵּ֥ית לֶ֖חֶם יְהוּדָ֑ה וְאֶת־בֵּ֤ית יְהוָה֙ אֲנִ֣י הֹלֵ֔ךְ וְאֵ֣ין אִ֔ישׁ מְאַסֵּ֥ף אוֹתִ֖י הַבָּֽיְתָה׃

19
Phonetic (Hebrew): vegam-tּe֤ben gּam-misepּo'֙ ye֣shsh lachamore֔ynu ve֠gam le֣chem vaya֤yin yeshsh-liy֙ velaֽ'amate֔ka velanּa֖'ar 'im-'abade֑yka 'e֥yn maches֖or kּal-dּabaֽr׃
Edified Edition (EDE)We have both straw and fodder for our donkeys and bread and wine for ourselves your servants, me, your female servant and the young man with us. We don’t need anything."

וְגַם־תֶּ֤בֶן גַּם־מִסְפּוֹא֙ יֵ֣שׁ לַחֲמוֹרֵ֔ינוּ וְ֠גַם לֶ֣חֶם וָיַ֤יִן יֶשׁ־לִי֙ וְלַֽאֲמָתֶ֔ךָ וְלַנַּ֖עַר עִם־עֲבָדֶ֑יךָ אֵ֥ין מַחְס֖וֹר כָּל־דָּבָֽר׃

20
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֨'mer ha'i֤yshsh hazּaqen֙ shshal֣om la֔ke ra֥q kּal-machesoreka֖ 'ala֑y ra֥q bּarech֖ob 'al-tּalaֽn׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"You are welcome at my house," the old man said. "Let me take care of all your needs. Only don’t spend the night in the square."

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר הָאִ֤ישׁ הַזָּקֵן֙ שָׁל֣וֹם לָ֔ךְ רַ֥ק כָּל־מַחְסוֹרְךָ֖ עָלָ֑י רַ֥ק בָּרְח֖וֹב אַל־תָּלַֽן׃

21
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayebiy'e֣hu lebeyt֔o vayּa֖bavl lachamori֑ym vaֽyּirechatzu֙ rageleyhe֔m vayּo'kel֖u vayּishshetּֽu׃
Edified Edition (EDE)So he took him into his house and fed his donkeys. After they had washed their feet, they had something to eat and drink.

וַיְבִיאֵ֣הוּ לְבֵית֔וֹ וַיָּ֖בָול לַחֲמוֹרִ֑ים וַֽיִּרְחֲצוּ֙ רַגְלֵיהֶ֔ם וַיֹּאכְל֖וּ וַיִּשְׁתּֽוּ׃

22
Phonetic (Hebrew): hemּah֮ meytiybi֣ym 'et-libּam֒ vehinּeh֩ 'aneshshe֨y ha'i֜yr 'aneshshe֣y beneֽy-beliyּa֗'al nasa֨bּu֙ 'et-habּa֔yit miֽtedּapּeqi֖ym 'al-hadּa֑let vayּo'mer֗u 'el-ha֠'iyshsh bּa֣'al habּa֤yit hazּaqen֙ le'mo֔r hotze֗ 'et-ha'i֛yshsh 'ashsher-bּa֥ 'el-bּeyteka֖ veneda'eֽnּu׃
Edified Edition (EDE)While they were enjoying themselves, some of the wicked men of the city surrounded the house. Pounding on the door, they shouted to the old man who owned the house, "Bring out the man who came to your house so we can have sex with him."

הֵמָּה֮ מֵיטִיבִ֣ים אֶת־לִבָּם֒ וְהִנֵּה֩ אַנְשֵׁ֨י הָעִ֜יר אַנְשֵׁ֣י בְנֵֽי־בְלִיַּ֗עַל נָסַ֨בּוּ֙ אֶת־הַבַּ֔יִת מִֽתְדַּפְּקִ֖ים עַל־הַדָּ֑לֶת וַיֹּאמְר֗וּ אֶל־הָ֠אִישׁ בַּ֣עַל הַבַּ֤יִת הַזָּקֵן֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר הוֹצֵ֗א אֶת־הָאִ֛ישׁ אֲשֶׁר־בָּ֥א אֶל־בֵּיתְךָ֖ וְנֵדָעֶֽנּוּ׃

23
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּetze֣ 'aleyhe֗m ha'iyshsh֙ bּa֣'al habּa֔yit vayּo֣'mer 'alehe֔m 'al-'acha֖y 'al-tּare֣'u na֑ 'a֠charey 'ashsher-bּa֞ ha'i֤yshsh hazּeh֙ 'al-bּeyti֔y 'aֽl-tּa'ashs֖u 'et-hanּebala֥h hazּoֽ't׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The owner of the house went outside and said to them, "No, my friends, don’t be so vile. Since this man is my guest, don’t do this outrageous thing.

וַיֵּצֵ֣א אֲלֵיהֶ֗ם הָאִישׁ֙ בַּ֣עַל הַבַּ֔יִת וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֲלֵהֶ֔ם אַל־אַחַ֖י אַל־תָּרֵ֣עוּ נָ֑א אַ֠חֲרֵי אֲשֶׁר־בָּ֞א הָאִ֤ישׁ הַזֶּה֙ אַל־בֵּיתִ֔י אַֽל־תַּעֲשׂ֖וּ אֶת־הַנְּבָלָ֥ה הַזֹּֽאת׃

24
Phonetic (Hebrew): hinּeh֩ bitּi֨y habּetula֜h upiֽylageshshe֗hu 'otziֽy'ah-nּa֤ 'otam֙ ve'anּ֣u 'ota֔m va'ashs֣u lahe֔m hatּ֖ob bּe'eyneyke֑m vela'i֤yshsh hazּeh֙ lo֣ ta'ashs֔u dּeba֖r hanּebala֥h hazּoֽ't׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Look, here is my virgin daughter, and this man’s concubine. I will bring them out to you now, and you can use them and do to them whatever you wish. But to this man, don’t do such an outrageous thing."

הִנֵּה֩ בִתִּ֨י הַבְּתוּלָ֜ה וּפִֽילַגְשֵׁ֗הוּ אוֹצִֽיאָה־נָּ֤א אוֹתָם֙ וְעַנּ֣וּ אוֹתָ֔ם וַעֲשׂ֣וּ לָהֶ֔ם הַטּ֖וֹב בְּעֵינֵיכֶ֑ם וְלָאִ֤ישׁ הַזֶּה֙ לֹ֣א תַעֲשׂ֔וּ דְּבַ֖ר הַנְּבָלָ֥ה הַזֹּֽאת׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): veloֽ'-'ab֤u ha'anashshiym֙ lishshemo֣'aֽ l֔o vayּachaze֤q ha'iyshsh֙ bּepi֣ylageshsh֔o vayּotze֥ 'aleyhe֖m hach֑utz vayּede'֣u '֠otahּ vayּiֽte'alּelu-ba֤hּ kּal-halּa֨yelah֙ 'ad-habּo֔qer vaֽyeshshalּech֖uha b'lvt kּa'al֥ot hashshּaֽchar׃
Edified Edition (EDE)But the men would not listen to him. So the man took his concubine and sent her outside to them, and they raped her and abused her throughout the night, and at dawn they let her go.

וְלֹֽא־אָב֤וּ הָאֲנָשִׁים֙ לִשְׁמֹ֣עַֽ ל֔וֹ וַיַּחֲזֵ֤ק הָאִישׁ֙ בְּפִ֣ילַגְשׁ֔וֹ וַיֹּצֵ֥א אֲלֵיהֶ֖ם הַח֑וּץ וַיֵּדְע֣וּ א֠וֹתָהּ וַיִּֽתְעַלְּלוּ־בָ֤הּ כָּל־הַלַּ֨יְלָה֙ עַד־הַבֹּ֔קֶר וַֽיְשַׁלְּח֖וּהָ בעלות כַּעֲל֥וֹת הַשָּֽׁחַר׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּabo֥ ha'ishshּa֖h lipen֣ot habּo֑qer vatּipּo֞l pּe֧tach bּeyt-ha'i֛yshsh 'ashsher-'adone֥yha shshּa֖m 'ad-ha'ֽor׃
Edified Edition (EDE)At daybreak the woman went back to the house where her master was staying, fell down at the door and lay there until daylight.

וַתָּבֹ֥א הָאִשָּׁ֖ה לִפְנ֣וֹת הַבֹּ֑קֶר וַתִּפֹּ֞ל פֶּ֧תַח בֵּית־הָאִ֛ישׁ אֲשֶׁר־אֲדוֹנֶ֥יהָ שָּׁ֖ם עַד־הָאֽוֹר׃

27
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֨qam 'adone֜yha bּabּo֗qer vayּipetּach֙ dּalet֣ot habּa֔yit vayּetze֖ lale֣ket ledarekּ֑o vehinּe֧h ha'ishshּa֣h piֽylageshsh֗o nope֨let֙ pּe֣tach habּa֔yit veyade֖yha 'al-hasּaֽp׃
Edified Edition (EDE)When her master got up in the morning and opened the doors of the house and stepped out to continue on his way, there lay his concubine, fallen in the doorway of the house, with her hands on the threshold.

וַיָּ֨קָם אֲדֹנֶ֜יהָ בַּבֹּ֗קֶר וַיִּפְתַּח֙ דַּלְת֣וֹת הַבַּ֔יִת וַיֵּצֵ֖א לָלֶ֣כֶת לְדַרְכּ֑וֹ וְהִנֵּ֧ה הָאִשָּׁ֣ה פִֽילַגְשׁ֗וֹ נֹפֶ֨לֶת֙ פֶּ֣תַח הַבַּ֔יִת וְיָדֶ֖יהָ עַל־הַסַּֽף׃

28
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֧'mer 'ele֛yha q֥umiy venele֖kah ve'e֣yn 'one֑h vayּiqּache֨ha֙ 'aֽl-hacham֔or vayּa֣qam ha'i֔yshsh vayּe֖leke limeqomֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)He said to her, "Get up; let’s go." But there was no answer. Then the man put her on his donkey and set out for home.

וַיֹּ֧אמֶר אֵלֶ֛יהָ ק֥וּמִי וְנֵלֵ֖כָה וְאֵ֣ין עֹנֶ֑ה וַיִּקָּחֶ֨הָ֙ עַֽל־הַחֲמ֔וֹר וַיָּ֣קָם הָאִ֔ישׁ וַיֵּ֖לֶךְ לִמְקֹמֽוֹ׃

29
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּabo֣ 'el-bּeyt֗o vayּiqּa֤ch 'et-haֽmּa'ake֨let֙ vayּachaze֣q bּepiֽylageshsh֔o vaֽyenatּeche֨ha֙ la'atzame֔yha lishshene֥ym 'ashsa֖r netachi֑ym vaֽyeshshalּeche֔ha bּeko֖l gּeb֥ul yishsera'eֽl׃
Edified Edition (EDE)When he reached home, he took a knife and cut his concubine into twelve pieces, limb by limb, and sent them into all the areas of Israel.

וַיָּבֹ֣א אֶל־בֵּית֗וֹ וַיִּקַּ֤ח אֶת־הַֽמַּאֲכֶ֨לֶת֙ וַיַּחֲזֵ֣ק בְּפִֽילַגְשׁ֔וֹ וַֽיְנַתְּחֶ֨הָ֙ לַעֲצָמֶ֔יהָ לִשְׁנֵ֥ים עָשָׂ֖ר נְתָחִ֑ים וַֽיְשַׁלְּחֶ֔הָ בְּכֹ֖ל גְּב֥וּל יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

30
Phonetic (Hebrew): vehaya֣h kal-haro'e֗h ve'amar֙ loֽ'-niheyeta֤h veloֽ'-nire'atah֙ kּazo֔'t lemiyּ֞om 'al֤ot bּeneֽy-yishsera'el֙ me'e֣retz mitzera֔yim 'a֖d hayּ֣om hazּe֑h shsiֽymu-lake֥m 'ale֖yha 'u֥tzu vedabּeֽru׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)Everyone who saw it said, "Such a thing has never been seen or done, not since the day the Israelites came up out of Egypt. Just imagine! We must do something! So, speak up!"

וְהָיָ֣ה כָל־הָרֹאֶ֗ה וְאָמַר֙ לֹֽא־נִהְיְתָ֤ה וְלֹֽא־נִרְאֲתָה֙ כָּזֹ֔את לְמִיּ֞וֹם עֲל֤וֹת בְּנֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ מֵאֶ֣רֶץ מִצְרַ֔יִם עַ֖ד הַיּ֣וֹם הַזֶּ֑ה שִֽׂימוּ־לָכֶ֥ם עָלֶ֖יהָ עֻ֥צוּ וְדַבֵּֽרוּ׃פ
