Chapter 20

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּetze'u֮ kּal-bּene֣y yishsera'el֒ vatּiqּahe֨l ha'eda֜h kּe'i֣yshsh 'echa֗d lemidּan֙ ve'ad-bּe'e֣r shshe֔ba ve'e֖retz hagּile'a֑d 'el-yehva֖h hamּitzepּaֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Then all the Israelites from Dan to Beersheba and from the land of Gilead came out as one and assembled before the LORD in Mizpah.

וַיֵּצְאוּ֮ כָּל־בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵל֒ וַתִּקָּהֵ֨ל הָעֵדָ֜ה כְּאִ֣ישׁ אֶחָ֗ד לְמִדָּן֙ וְעַד־בְּאֵ֣ר שֶׁ֔בַע וְאֶ֖רֶץ הַגִּלְעָ֑ד אֶל־יְהוָ֖ה הַמִּצְפָּֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiֽteyatzּeb֞u pּinּ֣ot kּal-ha'a֗m kּo֚l shshibete֣y yishsera'e֔l bּiqeha֖l 'a֣m ha'elohi֑ym 'arebּa֨ me'֥ot 'e֛lep 'i֥yshsh rageli֖y shsho֥leֽp chaֽreb׃p

Edified Edition (EDE)The leaders of all the people of the tribes of Israel took their places in the assembly of the people of God, four hundred thousand swordsmen.

וַיִּֽתְיַצְּב֞וּ פִּנּ֣וֹת כָּל־הָעָ֗ם כֹּ֚ל שִׁבְטֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל בִּקְהַ֖ל עַ֣ם הָאֱלֹהִ֑ים אַרְבַּ֨ע מֵא֥וֹת אֶ֛לֶף אִ֥ישׁ רַגְלִ֖י שֹׁ֥לֵֽף חָֽרֶב׃פ

Phonetic (Hebrew): vaֽyּishsheme'u֙ bּene֣y bineyami֔n kּiֽy-'al֥u beneֽy-yishsera'e֖l hamּitzepּa֑h vayּoֽ'meru֙ bּene֣y yishsera'e֔l dּabּer֕u 'eyka֥h niheyeta֖h hara'a֥h hazּoֽ't׃

Edified Edition (EDE)(The Benjamites heard that the Israelites had gone up to Mizpah.) Then the Israelites said, "Tell us how this awful thing happened."

וַֽיִּשְׁמְעוּ֙ בְּנֵ֣י בִנְיָמִ֔ן כִּֽי־עָל֥וּ בְנֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל הַמִּצְפָּ֑ה וַיֹּֽאמְרוּ֙ בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל דַּבְּר֕וּ אֵיכָ֥ה נִהְיְתָ֖ה הָרָעָ֥ה הַזֹּֽאת׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֜'an ha'i֣yshsh halּevi֗y 'i֛yshsh ha'ishshּa֥h hanּiretzacha֖h vayּo'ma֑r hagּibe'a֨tah֙ 'ashshe֣r lebineyami֔n bּa֛'tiy 'ani֥y upiֽylageshshi֖y lalֽun׃

Edified Edition (EDE)So the Levite, the husband of the murdered woman, said, "I and my concubine came to Gibeah in Benjamin to spend the night.

וַיַּ֜עַן הָאִ֣ישׁ הַלֵּוִ֗י אִ֛ישׁ הָאִשָּׁ֥ה הַנִּרְצָחָ֖ה וַיֹּאמַ֑ר הַגִּבְעָ֨תָה֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר לְבִנְיָמִ֔ן בָּ֛אתִי אֲנִ֥י וּפִֽילַגְשִׁ֖י לָלֽוּן׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּaqu֤mu 'alay֙ bּa'ale֣y hagּibe'a֔h vayּaso֧bּu 'ala֛y 'et-habּa֖yit la֑yelah 'otiy֙ dּimּ֣u laharo֔g ve'et-pּiylageshshi֥y 'inּ֖u vatּamoֽt׃

Edified Edition (EDE)During the night the men of Gibeah came after me and surrounded the house, intending to kill me. They raped my concubine, and she died.

וַיָּקֻ֤מוּ עָלַי֙ בַּעֲלֵ֣י הַגִּבְעָ֔ה וַיָּסֹ֧בּוּ עָלַ֛י אֶת־הַבַּ֖יִת לָ֑יְלָה אוֹתִי֙ דִּמּ֣וּ לַהֲרֹ֔ג וְאֶת־פִּילַגְשִׁ֥י עִנּ֖וּ וַתָּמֹֽת׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vaֽ'oche֤z bּepiֽylageshshiy֙ vaֽ'anatּeche֔ha vֽa'ashshalּeche֔ha bּekal-shsede֖h nachala֣t yishsera'e֑l kּi֥y 'ashs֛u zimּa֥h unebala֖h bּeyishsera'eֽl׃

Edified Edition (EDE)I took my concubine, cut her into pieces and sent one piece to each region of Israel’s inheritance, because they committed this lewd and outrageous act in Israel.

וָֽאֹחֵ֤ז בְּפִֽילַגְשִׁי֙ וָֽאֲנַתְּחֶ֔הָ וָֽאֲשַׁלְּחֶ֔הָ בְּכָל־שְׂדֵ֖ה נַחֲלַ֣ת יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל כִּ֥י עָשׂ֛וּ זִמָּ֥ה וּנְבָלָ֖ה בְּיִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): hinּe֥h kulּeke֖m bּene֣y yishsera'e֑l hab֥u lake֛m dּaba֥r ve'etza֖h haloֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Now, all you Israelites, speak up and tell me what you have decided to do."

הִנֵּ֥ה כֻלְּכֶ֖ם בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל הָב֥וּ לָכֶ֛ם דָּבָ֥ר וְעֵצָ֖ה הֲלֹֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֨qam֙ kּal-ha'a֔m kּe'i֥yshsh 'echa֖d le'mo֑r lo֤ neleke֙ 'i֣yshsh le'ahol֔o velo֥ nas֖ur 'i֥yshsh lebeytֽo׃

Edified Edition (EDE)All the people rose as one, saying, "None of us will go home. No, not one of us will return to his house.

וַיָּ֨קָם֙ כָּל־הָעָ֔ם כְּאִ֥ישׁ אֶחָ֖ד לֵאמֹ֑ר לֹ֤א נֵלֵךְ֙ אִ֣ישׁ לְאָהֳל֔וֹ וְלֹ֥א נָס֖וּר אִ֥ישׁ לְבֵיתֽוֹ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'atּa֕h ze֣h hadּaba֔r 'ashshe֥r na'ashse֖h lagּibe'a֑h 'ale֖yha bּegoraֽl׃

Edified Edition (EDE)But now this is what we’ll do to Gibeah: We’ll go up against it as the lot directs.

וְעַתָּ֕ה זֶ֣ה הַדָּבָ֔ר אֲשֶׁ֥ר נַעֲשֶׂ֖ה לַגִּבְעָ֑ה עָלֶ֖יהָ בְּגוֹרָֽל׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): velaqa֣chenu 'ashsarah֩ 'anashshi֨ym lamּe'a֜h leko֣l ׀ shshibete֣y yishsera'e֗l ume'a֤h la'e֨lep֙ ve'e֣lep larebaba֔h laqa֥chat tzeda֖h la'a֑m la'ashs֗ot lebo'am֙ lege֣ba bּineyami֔n kּekal-ha֨nּebala֔h 'ashshe֥r 'ashsa֖h bּeyishsera'eֽl׃

Edified Edition (EDE)We’ll take ten men out of every hundred from all the tribes of Israel, and a hundred from a thousand, and a thousand from ten thousand, to find provisions for the army. Then, when the army arrives at Gibeah in Benjamin, it can give them what they deserve for all this outrageous act done in Israel."

וְלָקַ֣חְנוּ עֲשָׂרָה֩ אֲנָשִׁ֨ים לַמֵּאָ֜ה לְכֹ֣ל ׀ שִׁבְטֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל וּמֵאָ֤ה לָאֶ֨לֶף֙ וְאֶ֣לֶף לָרְבָבָ֔ה לָקַ֥חַת צֵדָ֖ה לָעָ֑ם לַעֲשׂ֗וֹת לְבוֹאָם֙ לְגֶ֣בַע בִּנְיָמִ֔ן כְּכָל־הַ֨נְּבָלָ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר עָשָׂ֖ה בְּיִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּeֽ'ase֞p kּal-'i֤yshsh yishsera'el֙ 'el-ha'i֔yr kּe'i֥yshsh 'echa֖d chaberiֽym׃p

Edified Edition (EDE)So all the Israelites got together and united as one against the city.

וַיֵּֽאָסֵ֞ף כָּל־אִ֤ישׁ יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ אֶל־הָעִ֔יר כְּאִ֥ישׁ אֶחָ֖ד חֲבֵרִֽים׃פ

Phonetic (Hebrew): vaֽyּishshelech֞u shshibete֤y yishsera'el֙ 'anashshi֔ym bּekal-shshibete֥y bineyami֖n le'mo֑r ma֚h hara'a֣h hazּo֔'t 'ashshe֥r niheyeta֖h bּakeֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)The tribes of Israel sent messengers throughout the tribe of Benjamin, saying, "What about this awful crime that was committed among you?

וַֽיִּשְׁלְח֞וּ שִׁבְטֵ֤י יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ אֲנָשִׁ֔ים בְּכָל־שִׁבְטֵ֥י בִנְיָמִ֖ן לֵאמֹ֑ר מָ֚ה הָרָעָ֣ה הַזֹּ֔את אֲשֶׁ֥ר נִהְיְתָ֖ה בָּכֶֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'atּa֡h tּenu֩ 'et-ha'anashshi֨ym bּeneֽy-beliyּa֜'al 'ashshe֤r bּagּibe'ah֙ unemiyte֔m uneba'ara֥h ra'a֖h miyּishsera'e֑l velo֤ 'abu֙ bּene֣y bּineyami֔n lishshemo֕'a bּeq֖ol 'acheyhe֥m bּeneֽy-yishsera'eֽl׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Now surrender those wicked men of Gibeah so that we may put them to death and purge the evil from Israel." But the Benjamites would not listen to their fellow Israelites.

וְעַתָּ֡ה תְּנוּ֩ אֶת־הָאֲנָשִׁ֨ים בְּנֵֽי־בְלִיַּ֜עַל אֲשֶׁ֤ר בַּגִּבְעָה֙ וּנְמִיתֵ֔ם וּנְבַעֲרָ֥ה רָעָ֖ה מִיִּשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וְלֹ֤א אָבוּ֙ בְּנֵ֣י בִּנְיָמִ֔ן לִשְׁמֹ֕עַ בְּק֖וֹל אֲחֵיהֶ֥ם בְּנֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּe'asep֧u beneֽy-bineyami֛n min-he'ari֖ym hagּibe'a֑tah latze֥'t lamּilechama֖h 'im-bּene֥y yishsera'eֽl׃

Edified Edition (EDE)From their towns they came together at Gibeah to fight against the Israelites.

וַיֵּאָסְפ֧וּ בְנֵֽי־בִנְיָמִ֛ן מִן־הֶעָרִ֖ים הַגִּבְעָ֑תָה לָצֵ֥את לַמִּלְחָמָ֖ה עִם־בְּנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּitepּaֽqedu֩ bene֨y bineyami֜n bּayּ֤om hahu'֙ mehe֣'ari֔ym 'eshseri֨ym veshshishshּa֥h 'e֛lep 'i֖yshsh shsho֣leֽp cha֑reb le֠bad miyּoshshebe֤y hagּibe'ah֙ hitepּa֣qed֔u shsheba֥ me'֖ot 'i֥yshsh bּachֽur׃

Edified Edition (EDE)At once the Benjamites mobilised twenty-six thousand swordsmen from their towns, in addition to seven hundred able-bodied men from those living in Gibeah.

וַיִּתְפָּֽקְדוּ֩ בְנֵ֨י בִנְיָמִ֜ן בַּיּ֤וֹם הַהוּא֙ מֵהֶ֣עָרִ֔ים עֶשְׂרִ֨ים וְשִׁשָּׁ֥ה אֶ֛לֶף אִ֖ישׁ שֹׁ֣לֵֽף חָ֑רֶב לְ֠בַד מִיֹּשְׁבֵ֤י הַגִּבְעָה֙ הִתְפָּ֣קְד֔וּ שְׁבַ֥ע מֵא֖וֹת אִ֥ישׁ בָּחֽוּר׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): mikּo֣l ׀ ha'a֣m hazּe֗h shsheba֤ me'ot֙ 'i֣yshsh bּach֔ur 'itּe֖r yad-yemiyn֑o kּal-ze֗h qole֧'a bּa'e֛ben 'el-haֽshsּa'ara֖h velo֥ yachatiֽ'׃p

Edified Edition (EDE)Among all these soldiers there were seven hundred select troops who were left-handed, each of whom could sling a stone at a hair and not miss.

מִכֹּ֣ל ׀ הָעָ֣ם הַזֶּ֗ה שְׁבַ֤ע מֵאוֹת֙ אִ֣ישׁ בָּח֔וּר אִטֵּ֖ר יַד־יְמִינ֑וֹ כָּל־זֶ֗ה קֹלֵ֧עַ בָּאֶ֛בֶן אֶל־הַֽשַּׂעֲרָ֖ה וְלֹ֥א יַחֲטִֽא׃פ

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'i֨yshsh yishsera'e֜l hitepּaֽqed֗u lebad֙ mibּineyami֔n 'arebּa֨ me'֥ot 'e֛lep 'i֖yshsh shsho֣leֽp cha֑reb kּal-ze֖h 'i֥yshsh milechamaֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Israel, apart from Benjamin, mustered four hundred thousand swordsmen, all of them fighting men.

וְאִ֨ישׁ יִשְׂרָאֵ֜ל הִתְפָּֽקְד֗וּ לְבַד֙ מִבִּנְיָמִ֔ן אַרְבַּ֨ע מֵא֥וֹת אֶ֛לֶף אִ֖ישׁ שֹׁ֣לֵֽף חָ֑רֶב כָּל־זֶ֖ה אִ֥ישׁ מִלְחָמָֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּaqu֜mu vayּa'al֣u beֽyt-'el֮ vayּishshe'al֣u be'lohiym֒ vayּoֽ'meru֙ bּene֣y yishsera'e֔l mi֚y ya'aleh-lּa֣nu batּechilּa֔h lamּilechama֖h 'im-bּene֣y bineyami֑n vayּo֥'mer yehva֖h yehuda֥h batּechilּaֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)The Israelites went up to Bethel and inquired of God. They said, "Who of us shall go first to fight against the Benjamites?" the LORD replied, "Judah shall go first."

וַיָּקֻ֜מוּ וַיַּעֲל֣וּ בֵֽית־אֵל֮ וַיִּשְׁאֲל֣וּ בֵאלֹהִים֒ וַיֹּֽאמְרוּ֙ בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל מִ֚י יַעֲלֶה־לָּ֣נוּ בַתְּחִלָּ֔ה לַמִּלְחָמָ֖ה עִם־בְּנֵ֣י בִנְיָמִ֑ן וַיֹּ֥אמֶר יְהוָ֖ה יְהוּדָ֥ה בַתְּחִלָּֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּaq֥umu beneֽy-yishsera'e֖l bּabּo֑qer vayּֽachan֖u 'al-hagּibe'aֽh׃p

Edified Edition (EDE)The next morning the Israelites got up and pitched camp near Gibeah.

וַיָּק֥וּמוּ בְנֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל בַּבֹּ֑קֶר וַיַּֽחֲנ֖וּ עַל־הַגִּבְעָֽה׃פ

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּetze'֙ 'i֣yshsh yishsera'e֔l lamּilechama֖h 'im-bּineyami֑n vayּa'arek֨u 'itּa֧m 'iֽyshsh-yishsera'e֛l milechama֖h 'el-hagּibe'aֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)The Israelites went out to fight the Benjamites and took up battle positions against them at Gibeah.

וַיֵּצֵא֙ אִ֣ישׁ יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל לַמִּלְחָמָ֖ה עִם־בִּנְיָמִ֑ן וַיַּעַרְכ֨וּ אִתָּ֧ם אִֽישׁ־יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל מִלְחָמָ֖ה אֶל־הַגִּבְעָֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּetze'֥u beneֽy-bineyami֖n min-hagּibe'a֑h vayּashshechi֨ytu beyishsera'e֜l bּayּ֣om hah֗u shshena֨yim ve'eshseri֥ym 'e֛lep 'i֖yshsh 'aֽretzah׃

Edified Edition (EDE)The Benjamites came out of Gibeah and cut down twenty-two thousand Israelites on the battlefield that day.

וַיֵּצְא֥וּ בְנֵֽי־בִנְיָמִ֖ן מִן־הַגִּבְעָ֑ה וַיַּשְׁחִ֨יתוּ בְיִשְׂרָאֵ֜ל בַּיּ֣וֹם הַה֗וּא שְׁנַ֨יִם וְעֶשְׂרִ֥ים אֶ֛לֶף אִ֖ישׁ אָֽרְצָה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּitechazּe֥q ha'a֖m 'i֣yshsh yishsera'e֑l vayּosi֨pu֙ la'aro֣ke milechama֔h bּamּaq֕om 'ashsher-'a֥reku shsha֖m bּayּ֥om hari'shshֽon׃

Edified Edition (EDE)But the Israelites encouraged one another and again took up their positions where they had stationed themselves the first day.

וַיִּתְחַזֵּ֥ק הָעָ֖ם אִ֣ישׁ יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וַיֹּסִ֨פוּ֙ לַעֲרֹ֣ךְ מִלְחָמָ֔ה בַּמָּק֕וֹם אֲשֶׁר־עָ֥רְכוּ שָׁ֖ם בַּיּ֥וֹם הָרִאשֽׁוֹן׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa'al֣u beneֽy-yishsera'e֗l vayּibekּ֣u lipeneֽy-yehvah֮ 'ad-ha'ereb֒ vayּishshe'al֤u baֽyhvah֙ le'mo֔r ha'osi֗yp lage֨shshet֙ lamּilechama֔h 'im-bּene֥y bineyami֖n 'achi֑y vayּo֥'mer yehva֖h 'al֥u 'elaֽyv׃p

Edified Edition (EDE)The Israelites went up and wept before the LORD until evening, and they inquired of the LORD. They said, "Shall we go up again to fight against the Benjamites, our fellow Israelites?" the LORD answered, "Go up against them."

וַיַּעֲל֣וּ בְנֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל וַיִּבְכּ֣וּ לִפְנֵֽי־יְהוָה֮ עַד־הָעֶרֶב֒ וַיִּשְׁאֲל֤וּ בַֽיהוָה֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר הַאוֹסִ֗יף לָגֶ֨שֶׁת֙ לַמִּלְחָמָ֔ה עִם־בְּנֵ֥י בִנְיָמִ֖ן אָחִ֑י וַיֹּ֥אמֶר יְהוָ֖ה עֲל֥וּ אֵלָֽיו׃פ

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiqereb֧u beneֽy-yishsera'e֛l 'el-bּene֥y bineyami֖n bּayּ֥om hashshּeniֽy׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Then the Israelites drew near to Benjamin the second day.

וַיִּקְרְב֧וּ בְנֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל אֶל־בְּנֵ֥י בִנְיָמִ֖ן בַּיּ֥וֹם הַשֵּׁנִֽי׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּetze'֩ bineyami֨n ׀ liqera'ta֥m ׀ miֽn-hagּibe'ah֮ bּayּ֣om hashshּeniy֒ vayּashshechiytu֩ bibene֨y yishsera'e֜l '֗od shshemona֨t 'ashsa֥r 'e֛lep 'i֖yshsh 'a֑retzah kּal-'e֖lּeh shsho֥lepey chaֽreb׃

Edified Edition (EDE)This time, when the Benjamites came out from Gibeah to oppose them, they cut down another eighteen thousand Israelites, all of them armed with swords.

וַיֵּצֵא֩ בִנְיָמִ֨ן ׀ לִקְרָאתָ֥ם ׀ מִֽן־הַגִּבְעָה֮ בַּיּ֣וֹם הַשֵּׁנִי֒ וַיַּשְׁחִיתוּ֩ בִבְנֵ֨י יִשְׂרָאֵ֜ל ע֗וֹד שְׁמֹנַ֨ת עָשָׂ֥ר אֶ֛לֶף אִ֖ישׁ אָ֑רְצָה כָּל־אֵ֖לֶּה שֹׁ֥לְפֵי חָֽרֶב׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa'al֣u kal-bּeney֩ yishsera'e֨l vekal-ha'a֜m vayּabo֣'u beֽyt-'e֗l vayּibekּu֙ vayּe֤shshebu shsham֙ lipene֣y yehva֔h vayּatz֥umu bayּom-hah֖u 'ad-ha'a֑reb vaֽyּa'al֛u 'ol֥ot ushshelami֖ym lipene֥y yehvaֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Then all the Israelites, the whole army, went up to Bethel, and there they sat weeping before the LORD. They fasted that day until evening and presented burnt offerings and fellowship offerings to the LORD.

וַיַּעֲל֣וּ כָל־בְּנֵי֩ יִשְׂרָאֵ֨ל וְכָל־הָעָ֜ם וַיָּבֹ֣אוּ בֵֽית־אֵ֗ל וַיִּבְכּוּ֙ וַיֵּ֤שְׁבוּ שָׁם֙ לִפְנֵ֣י יְהוָ֔ה וַיָּצ֥וּמוּ בַיּוֹם־הַה֖וּא עַד־הָעָ֑רֶב וַֽיַּעֲל֛וּ עֹל֥וֹת וּשְׁלָמִ֖ים לִפְנֵ֥י יְהוָֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּishshe'al֥u beneֽy-yishsera'e֖l bּaֽyhva֑h veshsha֗m 'aron֙ bּeri֣yt ha'elohi֔ym bּayּami֖ym haheֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)And the Israelites inquired of the LORD. (In those days the ark of the covenant of God was there,

וַיִּשְׁאֲל֥וּ בְנֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל בַּֽיהוָ֑ה וְשָׁ֗ם אֲרוֹן֙ בְּרִ֣ית הָאֱלֹהִ֔ים בַּיָּמִ֖ים הָהֵֽם׃

Edified Edition (EDE)with Phinehas son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, ministering before it.) They asked, "Shall we go up again to fight against the Benjamites, our fellow Israelites, or shall we stop?" the LORD responded, "Go, for tomorrow I will give them into your hands."

וּ֠פִינְחָס בֶּן־אֶלְעָזָ֨ר בֶּֽן־אַהֲרֹ֜ן עֹמֵ֣ד ׀ לְפָנָ֗יו בַּיָּמִ֣ים הָהֵם֮ לֵאמֹר֒ הַאוֹסִ֨ף ע֜וֹד לָצֵ֧את לַמִּלְחָמָ֛ה עִם־בְּנֵֽי־בִנְיָמִ֥ן אָחִ֖י אִם־אֶחְדָּ֑ל וַיֹּ֤אמֶר יְהוָה֙ עֲל֔וּ כִּ֥י מָחָ֖ר אֶתְּנֶ֥נּוּ בְיָדֶֽךָ׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Then Israel set an ambush around Gibeah.

וַיָּ֤שֶׂם יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ אֹֽרְבִ֔ים אֶל־הַגִּבְעָ֖ה סָבִֽיב׃פ

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa'al֧u beneֽy-yishsera'e֛l 'el-bּene֥y bineyami֖n bּayּ֣om hashshּeliyshshi֑y vayּa'arek֥u 'el-hagּibe'a֖h kּepa֥'am bּepaֽ'am׃

Edified Edition (EDE)They went up against the Benjamites on the third day and took up their positions against Gibeah as they had done before.

וַיַּעֲל֧וּ בְנֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל אֶל־בְּנֵ֥י בִנְיָמִ֖ן בַּיּ֣וֹם הַשְּׁלִישִׁ֑י וַיַּעַרְכ֥וּ אֶל־הַגִּבְעָ֖ה כְּפַ֥עַם בְּפָֽעַם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּetze'֤u beneֽy-bineyamin֙ liqera֣'t ha'a֔m hanetּeq֖u min-ha'i֑yr vayּache֡lּu lehakּot֩ meha'a֨m chalali֜ym kּepa֣'am ׀ bּepa֗'am bּaֽmesilּot֙ 'ashshe֨r 'acha֜t 'ola֣h beֽyt-'e֗l ve'acha֤t gּibe'a֨tah֙ bּashsּade֔h kּishsheloshshi֥ym 'i֖yshsh bּeyishsera'eֽl׃

Edified Edition (EDE)The Benjamites came out to meet them and were drawn away from the city. They began to inflict casualties on the Israelites as before, so that about thirty men fell in the open field and on the roads, the one leading to Bethel and the other to Gibeah.

וַיֵּצְא֤וּ בְנֵֽי־בִנְיָמִן֙ לִקְרַ֣את הָעָ֔ם הָנְתְּק֖וּ מִן־הָעִ֑יר וַיָּחֵ֡לּוּ לְהַכּוֹת֩ מֵהָעָ֨ם חֲלָלִ֜ים כְּפַ֣עַם ׀ בְּפַ֗עַם בַּֽמְסִלּוֹת֙ אֲשֶׁ֨ר אַחַ֜ת עֹלָ֣ה בֵֽית־אֵ֗ל וְאַחַ֤ת גִּבְעָ֨תָה֙ בַּשָּׂדֶ֔ה כִּשְׁלֹשִׁ֥ים אִ֖ישׁ בְּיִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּoֽ'meru֙ bּene֣y bineyami֔n nigּapi֥ym he֛m lepane֖ynu kּebari'shshona֑h ubene֧y yishsera'e֣l 'amer֗u nan֨usah֙ uֽnetaqּenu֔hu min-ha'i֖yr 'el-haֽmesilּֽot׃

Edified Edition (EDE)While the Benjamites were saying, "We are defeating them as before," the Israelites were saying, "Let’s retreat and draw them away from the city to the roads."

וַיֹּֽאמְרוּ֙ בְּנֵ֣י בִנְיָמִ֔ן נִגָּפִ֥ים הֵ֛ם לְפָנֵ֖ינוּ כְּבָרִאשֹׁנָ֑ה וּבְנֵ֧י יִשְׂרָאֵ֣ל אָמְר֗וּ נָנ֨וּסָה֙ וּֽנְתַקְּנֻ֔הוּ מִן־הָעִ֖יר אֶל־הַֽמְסִלּֽוֹת׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): veko֣l ׀ 'i֣yshsh yishsera'e֗l qa֚mu mimּeqom֔o vayּa'arek֖u bּeba֣'al tּama֑r ve'ore֧b yishsera'e֛l megi֥ycha mimּeqom֖o mimּaֽ'areh-gaֽba'׃

Edified Edition (EDE)All the men of Israel moved from their places and took up positions at Baal Tamar, and the Israelite ambush rushed out of its place in the vicinity of Gibeah.

וְכֹ֣ל ׀ אִ֣ישׁ יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל קָ֚מוּ מִמְּקוֹמ֔וֹ וַיַּעַרְכ֖וּ בְּבַ֣עַל תָּמָ֑ר וְאֹרֵ֧ב יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל מֵגִ֥יחַ מִמְּקֹמ֖וֹ מִמַּֽעֲרֵה־גָֽבַע׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּabo'u֩ minּe֨ged lagּibe'a֜h 'ashseret֩ 'alapi֨ym 'i֤yshsh bּachur֙ mikּal-yishsera'e֔l vehamּilechama֖h kּabe֑dah vehem֙ lo֣ yade'֔u kּiֽy-noga֥'at 'aleyhe֖m hara'aֽh׃p

Edified Edition (EDE)Then ten thousand of Israel’s able-bodied troops made a frontal attack on Gibeah. The fighting was so heavy that the Benjamites did not realise how near disaster was.

וַיָּבֹאוּ֩ מִנֶּ֨גֶד לַגִּבְעָ֜ה עֲשֶׂרֶת֩ אֲלָפִ֨ים אִ֤ישׁ בָּחוּר֙ מִכָּל־יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל וְהַמִּלְחָמָ֖ה כָּבֵ֑דָה וְהֵם֙ לֹ֣א יָדְע֔וּ כִּֽי־נֹגַ֥עַת עֲלֵיהֶ֖ם הָרָעָֽה׃פ

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּigּo֨p yehva֥h ׀ 'eֽt-bּineyamin֮ lipene֣y yishsera'el֒ vayּashshechiytu֩ bene֨y yishsera'e֤l bּebineyamin֙ bּayּ֣om hah֔u 'eshseri֨ym vachamishshּa֥h 'e֛lep ume'a֖h 'i֑yshsh kּal-'e֖lּeh shsho֥lep chaֽreb׃

Edified Edition (EDE)The LORD defeated Benjamin before Israel, and on that day the Israelites struck down 25,100 Benjamites, all armed with swords.

וַיִּגֹּ֨ף יְהוָ֥ה ׀ אֶֽת־בִּנְיָמִן֮ לִפְנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵל֒ וַיַּשְׁחִיתוּ֩ בְנֵ֨י יִשְׂרָאֵ֤ל בְּבִנְיָמִן֙ בַּיּ֣וֹם הַה֔וּא עֶשְׂרִ֨ים וַחֲמִשָּׁ֥ה אֶ֛לֶף וּמֵאָ֖ה אִ֑ישׁ כָּל־אֵ֖לֶּה שֹׁ֥לֵף חָֽרֶב׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּire'֥u beneֽy-bineyami֖n kּi֣y nigּa֑pu vayּitּen֨u 'iֽyshsh-yishsera'e֤l maqom֙ lebineyami֔n kּi֤y baֽtechu֙ 'el-ha֣'ore֔b 'ashsher shsa֖mu 'el-hagּibe'aֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Then the Benjamites realised they were defeated. Now the men of Israel had given way before Benjamin, because they relied on the ambush they had set near Gibeah.

וַיִּרְא֥וּ בְנֵֽי־בִנְיָמִ֖ן כִּ֣י נִגָּ֑פוּ וַיִּתְּנ֨וּ אִֽישׁ־יִשְׂרָאֵ֤ל מָקוֹם֙ לְבִנְיָמִ֔ן כִּ֤י בָֽטְחוּ֙ אֶל־הָ֣אֹרֵ֔ב אֲשֶׁר שָׂ֖מוּ אֶל־הַגִּבְעָֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): veha'ore֣b hechi֔yshshu vaֽyּipeshshet֖u 'el-hagּibe'a֑h vayּimeshshoke֙ ha'ore֔b vayּa֥ke 'et-kּal-ha'i֖yr lepiy-chaֽreb׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Those who had been in ambush rushed suddenly into Gibeah; they spread out and put the whole city to the sword.

וְהָאֹרֵ֣ב הֵחִ֔ישׁוּ וַֽיִּפְשְׁט֖וּ אֶל־הַגִּבְעָ֑ה וַיִּמְשֹׁךְ֙ הָאֹרֵ֔ב וַיַּ֥ךְ אֶת־כָּל־הָעִ֖יר לְפִי־חָֽרֶב׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vehamּo'e֗d haya֛h le'i֥yshsh yishsera'e֖l 'im-ha'ore֑b he֕reb leha'alota֛m mashse'a֥t he'ashsha֖n min-ha'iֽyr׃

Edified Edition (EDE)The Israelites had arranged a signal with the ambush, that they should send up a great cloud of smoke from the city,

וְהַמּוֹעֵ֗ד הָיָ֛ה לְאִ֥ישׁ יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל עִם־הָאֹרֵ֑ב הֶ֕רֶב לְהַעֲלוֹתָ֛ם מַשְׂאַ֥ת הֶעָשָׁ֖ן מִן־הָעִֽיר׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּahapo֥ke 'iֽyshsh-yishsera'e֖l bּamּilechama֑h ubineyami֡n hechel֩ lehakּ֨ot chalali֤ym bּe'iֽyshsh-yishsera'el֙ kּishsheloshshi֣ym 'i֔yshsh kּi֣y 'amer֔u 'ake֩ nigּ֨op nigּa֥p hu'֙ lepane֔ynu kּamּilechama֖h hari'shshonaֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)and then the Israelites would counter-attack. The Benjamites had begun to inflict casualties on the Israelites (about thirty), and they said, "We are defeating them as in the first battle."

וַיַּהֲפֹ֥ךְ אִֽישׁ־יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל בַּמִּלְחָמָ֑ה וּבִנְיָמִ֡ן הֵחֵל֩ לְהַכּ֨וֹת חֲלָלִ֤ים בְּאִֽישׁ־יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ כִּשְׁלֹשִׁ֣ים אִ֔ישׁ כִּ֣י אָמְר֔וּ אַךְ֩ נִגּ֨וֹף נִגָּ֥ף הוּא֙ לְפָנֵ֔ינוּ כַּמִּלְחָמָ֖ה הָרִאשֹׁנָֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vehamּashse'e֗t heche֛lּah la'al֥ot min-ha'i֖yr 'amּ֣ud 'ashsha֑n vayּi֤pen bּineyamin֙ 'achara֔yv vehinּe֛h 'ala֥h keliyl-ha'i֖yr hashshּamaֽyemah׃

Edified Edition (EDE)But when the column of smoke began to rise from the city, the Benjamites turned and saw the whole city going up in smoke.

וְהַמַּשְׂאֵ֗ת הֵחֵ֛לָּה לַעֲל֥וֹת מִן־הָעִ֖יר עַמּ֣וּד עָשָׁ֑ן וַיִּ֤פֶן בִּנְיָמִן֙ אַחֲרָ֔יו וְהִנֵּ֛ה עָלָ֥ה כְלִיל־הָעִ֖יר הַשָּׁמָֽיְמָה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'i֤yshsh yishsera'el֙ hapa֔ke vayּibּahe֖l 'i֣yshsh bּineyami֑n kּi֣y ra'a֔h kּiֽy-nage'a֥h 'ala֖yv hara'aֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Then the Israelites counter-attacked, and the Benjamites were terrified, because they realised that disaster had come on them.

וְאִ֤ישׁ יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ הָפַ֔ךְ וַיִּבָּהֵ֖ל אִ֣ישׁ בִּנְיָמִ֑ן כִּ֣י רָאָ֔ה כִּֽי־נָגְעָ֥ה עָלָ֖יו הָרָעָֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּipen֞u lipene֨y 'i֤yshsh yishsera'el֙ 'el-dּe֣reke hamּidebּa֔r vehamּilechama֖h hidebּiyqa֑tehu va'ashsher֙ mehe֣'ari֔ym mashshechiyti֥ym 'ot֖o bּetokֽo׃

Edified Edition (EDE)So they fled before the Israelites in the direction of the wilderness, but they could not escape the battle. And the Israelites who came out of the towns cut them down there.

וַיִּפְנ֞וּ לִפְנֵ֨י אִ֤ישׁ יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ אֶל־דֶּ֣רֶךְ הַמִּדְבָּ֔ר וְהַמִּלְחָמָ֖ה הִדְבִּיקָ֑תְהוּ וַאֲשֶׁר֙ מֵהֶ֣עָרִ֔ים מַשְׁחִיתִ֥ים אוֹת֖וֹ בְּתוֹכֽוֹ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): kּitּer֤u 'et-bּineyamin֙ hirediypu֔hu menucha֖h hideriyku֑hu 'a֛d no֥kach hagּibe'a֖h mimּizerach-shshaֽmeshsh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)They surrounded the Benjamites, chasing them and easily overrunning them in the vicinity of Gibeah on the east.

כִּתְּר֤וּ אֶת־בִּנְיָמִן֙ הִרְדִיפֻ֔הוּ מְנוּחָ֖ה הִדְרִיכֻ֑הוּ עַ֛ד נֹ֥כַח הַגִּבְעָ֖ה מִמִּזְרַח־שָֽׁמֶשׁ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vaֽyּipּelu֙ mibּineyami֔n shshemonaֽh-'ashsa֥r 'e֖lep 'i֑yshsh 'et-kּal-'e֖lּeh 'aneshshey-chaֽyil׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Eighteen thousand Benjamites fell, all of them valiant fighters.

וַֽיִּפְּלוּ֙ מִבִּנְיָמִ֔ן שְׁמֹנָֽה־עָשָׂ֥ר אֶ֖לֶף אִ֑ישׁ אֶת־כָּל־אֵ֖לֶּה אַנְשֵׁי־חָֽיִל׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּipen֞u vayּanu֤su hamּidebּa֨rah֙ 'el-se֣la haֽrimּ֔on vaye'oֽlelu֨hu֙ bּaֽmesilּ֔ot chame֥shshet 'alapi֖ym 'i֑yshsh vayּadebּi֤yqu 'acharayv֙ 'ad-gּide'o֔m vayּakּ֥u mimּe֖nּu 'alepּa֥yim 'iֽyshsh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)As they turned and fled toward the wilderness to the Rock of Rimmon, the Israelites cut down five thousand men along the roads. They kept pressing after the Benjamites as far as Gidom and struck down two thousand more.

וַיִּפְנ֞וּ וַיָּנֻ֤סוּ הַמִּדְבָּ֨רָה֙ אֶל־סֶ֣לַע הָֽרִמּ֔וֹן וַיְעֹֽלְלֻ֨הוּ֙ בַּֽמְסִלּ֔וֹת חֲמֵ֥שֶׁת אֲלָפִ֖ים אִ֑ישׁ וַיַּדְבִּ֤יקוּ אַחֲרָיו֙ עַד־גִּדְעֹ֔ם וַיַּכּ֥וּ מִמֶּ֖נּוּ אַלְפַּ֥יִם אִֽישׁ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehiy֩ kal-hanּo֨peli֜ym mibּineyami֗n 'eshseriym֩ vachamishshּa֨h 'e֥lep 'i֛yshsh shsho֥leֽp che֖reb bּayּ֣om hah֑u 'eֽt-kּal-'e֖lּeh 'aneshshey-chaֽyil׃

Edified Edition (EDE)On that day twenty-five thousand Benjamite swordsmen fell, all of them valiant fighters.

וַיְהִי֩ כָל־הַנֹּ֨פְלִ֜ים מִבִּנְיָמִ֗ן עֶשְׂרִים֩ וַחֲמִשָּׁ֨ה אֶ֥לֶף אִ֛ישׁ שֹׁ֥לֵֽף חֶ֖רֶב בַּיּ֣וֹם הַה֑וּא אֶֽת־כָּל־אֵ֖לֶּה אַנְשֵׁי־חָֽיִל׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּipen֞u vayּanu֤su hamּidebּa֨rah֙ 'el-se֣la haֽrimּ֔on shshe֥shsh me'֖ot 'i֑yshsh vayּeֽshshebu֙ bּese֣la rimּ֔on 'arebּa'a֖h chodashshiֽym׃

Edified Edition (EDE)But six hundred of them turned and fled into the wilderness to the Rock of Rimmon, where they stayed four months.

וַיִּפְנ֞וּ וַיָּנֻ֤סוּ הַמִּדְבָּ֨רָה֙ אֶל־סֶ֣לַע הָֽרִמּ֔וֹן שֵׁ֥שׁ מֵא֖וֹת אִ֑ישׁ וַיֵּֽשְׁבוּ֙ בְּסֶ֣לַע רִמּ֔וֹן אַרְבָּעָ֖ה חֳדָשִֽׁים׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'i֨yshsh yishsera'e֜l shsha֣bu 'el-bּene֤y bineyamin֙ vayּakּ֣um lepiy-che֔reb me'i֤yr metom֙ 'ad-bּehema֔h 'a֖d kּal-hanּimetza֑ gּa֛m kּal-he'ari֥ym hanּimetza'֖ot shshilּech֥u ba'eֽshsh׃p

Edified Edition (EDE)The men of Israel went back to Benjamin and put all the towns to the sword, including the animals and everything else they found. And they burned down every town they came to.

וְאִ֨ישׁ יִשְׂרָאֵ֜ל שָׁ֣בוּ אֶל־בְּנֵ֤י בִנְיָמִן֙ וַיַּכּ֣וּם לְפִי־חֶ֔רֶב מֵעִ֤יר מְתֹם֙ עַד־בְּהֵמָ֔ה עַ֖ד כָּל־הַנִּמְצָ֑א גַּ֛ם כָּל־הֶעָרִ֥ים הַנִּמְצָא֖וֹת שִׁלְּח֥וּ בָאֵֽשׁ׃פ
