Chapter 6
1
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa'ashs֧u beney-yishsera'e֛l hara֖ bּe'eyne֣y yehva֑h vayּitּene֧m yehva֛h bּeyad-mideya֖n shshe֥ba shshaniֽym׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The Israelites did evil in the eyes of the LORD, and for seven years he gave them into the hands of the Midianites.

וַיַּעֲשׂ֧וּ בְנֵי־יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל הָרַ֖ע בְּעֵינֵ֣י יְהוָ֑ה וַיִּתְּנֵ֧ם יְהוָ֛ה בְּיַד־מִדְיָ֖ן שֶׁ֥בַע שָׁנִֽים׃

2
Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּa֥'az yad-mideya֖n 'al-yishsera'e֑l mipּene֨y mideya֜n 'ashsֽu lahe֣m ׀ bּene֣y yishsera'e֗l 'et-hamּineharot֙ 'ashshe֣r bּeֽhari֔ym ve'et-hamּe'ar֖ot ve'et-hamּetzadֽot׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Because the power of Midian was so oppressive, the Israelites prepared shelters for themselves in mountain clefts, caves and strongholds.

וַתָּ֥עָז יַד־מִדְיָ֖ן עַל־יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל מִפְּנֵ֨י מִדְיָ֜ן עָשֽׂוּ לָהֶ֣ם ׀ בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל אֶת־הַמִּנְהָרוֹת֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר בֶּֽהָרִ֔ים וְאֶת־הַמְּעָר֖וֹת וְאֶת־הַמְּצָדֽוֹת׃

3
Phonetic (Hebrew): vehaya֖h 'im-zara֣ yishsera'e֑l ve'ala֨h mideya֧n vֽa'amale֛q ubeney-qe֖dem ve'al֥u 'alaֽyv׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Whenever the Israelites planted their crops, the Midianites, Amalekites and other eastern peoples invaded the country.

וְהָיָ֖ה אִם־זָרַ֣ע יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וְעָלָ֨ה מִדְיָ֧ן וַֽעֲמָלֵ֛ק וּבְנֵי־קֶ֖דֶם וְעָל֥וּ עָלָֽיו׃

4
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּachan֣u 'aleyhe֗m vayּashshechi֨ytu֙ 'et-yeb֣ul ha'a֔retz 'ad-bּo'aka֖ 'azּa֑h veloֽ'-yashshe'i֤yru miֽcheyah֙ bּeyishsera'e֔l veshse֥h vashsh֖or vachamֽor׃
Edified Edition (EDE)They camped on the land and ruined the crops all the way to Gaza and did not spare a living thing for Israel, neither sheep nor cattle nor donkeys.

וַיַּחֲנ֣וּ עֲלֵיהֶ֗ם וַיַּשְׁחִ֨יתוּ֙ אֶת־יְב֣וּל הָאָ֔רֶץ עַד־בּוֹאֲךָ֖ עַזָּ֑ה וְלֹֽא־יַשְׁאִ֤ירוּ מִֽחְיָה֙ בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל וְשֶׂ֥ה וָשׁ֖וֹר וַחֲמֽוֹר׃

5
Phonetic (Hebrew): kּi֡y hem֩ umiqeneyhe֨m ya'al֜u ve'aholeyhe֗m yb'v uba֤'u kedeֽy-'arebּeh֙ laro֔b velahe֥m veligemalּeyhe֖m 'e֣yn misepּa֑r vayּabo֥'u ba'a֖retz leshshachataֽhּ׃
Edified Edition (EDE)They came up with their livestock and their tents like swarms of locusts. It was impossible to count them or their camels; they invaded the land to ravage it.

כִּ֡י הֵם֩ וּמִקְנֵיהֶ֨ם יַעֲל֜וּ וְאָהֳלֵיהֶ֗ם יבאו וּבָ֤אוּ כְדֵֽי־אַרְבֶּה֙ לָרֹ֔ב וְלָהֶ֥ם וְלִגְמַלֵּיהֶ֖ם אֵ֣ין מִסְפָּ֑ר וַיָּבֹ֥אוּ בָאָ֖רֶץ לְשַׁחֲתָֽהּ׃

6
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּidּa֧l yishsera'e֛l me'o֖d mipּene֣y mideya֑n vayּize'aq֥u beneֽy-yishsera'e֖l 'el-yehvaֽh׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)Midian so impoverished the Israelites that they cried out to the LORD for help.

וַיִּדַּ֧ל יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל מְאֹ֖ד מִפְּנֵ֣י מִדְיָ֑ן וַיִּזְעֲק֥וּ בְנֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל אֶל־יְהוָֽה׃פ

7
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehi֕y kּiֽy-za'aq֥u beneֽy-yishsera'e֖l 'el-yehva֑h 'a֖l 'od֥ot mideyaֽn׃
Edified Edition (EDE)When the Israelites cried out to the LORD because of Midian,

וַיְהִ֕י כִּֽי־זָעֲק֥וּ בְנֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל אֶל־יְהוָ֑ה עַ֖ל אֹד֥וֹת מִדְיָֽן׃

8
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּishshela֧ch yehva֛h 'i֥yshsh nabi֖y 'el-bּene֣y yishsera'e֑l vayּo֨'mer lahe֜m kּoh-'ama֥r yehva֣h ׀ 'elohe֣y yishsera'e֗l 'anoki֞y he'ele֤ytiy 'etekem֙ mimּitzera֔yim va'otzi֥y 'eteke֖m mibּe֥yt 'abadiֽym׃
Edified Edition (EDE)he sent them a prophet, who said, "This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: I brought you up out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.

וַיִּשְׁלַ֧ח יְהוָ֛ה אִ֥ישׁ נָבִ֖יא אֶל־בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וַיֹּ֨אמֶר לָהֶ֜ם כֹּה־אָמַ֥ר יְהוָ֣ה ׀ אֱלֹהֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל אָנֹכִ֞י הֶעֱלֵ֤יתִי אֶתְכֶם֙ מִמִּצְרַ֔יִם וָאֹצִ֥יא אֶתְכֶ֖ם מִבֵּ֥ית עֲבָדִֽים׃

9
Phonetic (Hebrew): va'atzּi֤l 'etekem֙ miyּa֣d mitzera֔yim umiyּa֖d kּal-lochatzeyke֑m va'agare֤shsh 'otam֙ mipּeneyke֔m va'etּena֥h lake֖m 'et-'aretzaֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)I rescued you from the hand of the Egyptians. And I delivered you from the hand of all your oppressors; I drove them out before you and gave you their land.

וָאַצִּ֤ל אֶתְכֶם֙ מִיַּ֣ד מִצְרַ֔יִם וּמִיַּ֖ד כָּל־לֹחֲצֵיכֶ֑ם וָאֲגָרֵ֤שׁ אוֹתָם֙ מִפְּנֵיכֶ֔ם וָאֶתְּנָ֥ה לָכֶ֖ם אֶת־אַרְצָֽם׃

10
Phonetic (Hebrew): va'omera֣h lake֗m 'aniy֙ yehva֣h 'eloheyke֔m lo֤ tiֽyre'u֙ 'et-'elohe֣y ha'emori֔y 'ashshe֥r 'atּe֖m yoshshebi֣ym bּe'aretza֑m velo֥ shshema'etּe֖m bּeqoliֽy׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)I said to you, 'I am the LORD your God; do not worship the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you live.' But you have not listened to me."

וָאֹמְרָ֣ה לָכֶ֗ם אֲנִי֙ יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֵיכֶ֔ם לֹ֤א תִֽירְאוּ֙ אֶת־אֱלֹהֵ֣י הָאֱמֹרִ֔י אֲשֶׁ֥ר אַתֶּ֖ם יוֹשְׁבִ֣ים בְּאַרְצָ֑ם וְלֹ֥א שְׁמַעְתֶּ֖ם בְּקוֹלִֽי׃פ

11
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּabo֞ male'a֣ke yehva֗h vayּe֨shsheb֙ tּa֤chat haֽ'elah֙ 'ashshe֣r bּe'apera֔h 'ashshe֥r leyo'a֖shsh 'abi֣y haֽ'ezeri֑y vegide'֣on bּen֗o chobe֤t chitּiym֙ bּagּa֔t lehani֖ys mipּene֥y mideyaֽn׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The angel of the LORD came and sat down under the oak in Ophrah that belonged to Joash the Abiezrite, where his son Gideon was threshing wheat in a winepress to keep it from the Midianites.

וַיָּבֹ֞א מַלְאַ֣ךְ יְהוָ֗ה וַיֵּ֨שֶׁב֙ תַּ֤חַת הָֽאֵלָה֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר בְּעָפְרָ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר לְיוֹאָ֖שׁ אֲבִ֣י הָֽעֶזְרִ֑י וְגִדְע֣וֹן בְּנ֗וֹ חֹבֵ֤ט חִטִּים֙ בַּגַּ֔ת לְהָנִ֖יס מִפְּנֵ֥י מִדְיָֽן׃

12
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּera֥ 'ela֖yv malּe'a֣ke yehva֑h vayּo֣'mer 'ela֔yv yehva֥h 'imּeka֖ gּibּ֥or hechaֽyil׃
Edified Edition (EDE)When the angel of the LORD appeared to Gideon, he said, "The LORD is with you, mighty warrior."

וַיֵּרָ֥א אֵלָ֖יו מַלְּאַ֣ךְ יְהוָ֑ה וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֵלָ֔יו יְהוָ֥ה עִמְּךָ֖ גִּבּ֥וֹר הֶחָֽיִל׃

13
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֨'mer 'ela֤yv gּide'on֙ bּi֣y 'adoni֔y veye֤shsh yehvah֙ 'imּa֔nu vela֥mּah metza'a֖tenu kּal-zo֑'t ve'ayּe֣h kaֽl-nipele'ota֡yv 'ashsher֩ sipּeru-la֨nu 'abote֜ynu le'mo֗r halo֤ mimּitzera֨yim֙ he'ela֣nu yehva֔h ve'atּah֙ netashsha֣nu yehva֔h vaֽyּitּene֖nu bּekap-mideyaֽn׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"Pardon me, my lord," Gideon replied, "but if the LORD is with us, why has all this happened to us? Where are all his wonders that our ancestors told us about when they said, 'Did not the LORD bring us up out of Egypt?' But now the LORD has abandoned us and given us into the hand of Midian."

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר אֵלָ֤יו גִּדְעוֹן֙ בִּ֣י אֲדֹנִ֔י וְיֵ֤שׁ יְהוָה֙ עִמָּ֔נוּ וְלָ֥מָּה מְצָאַ֖תְנוּ כָּל־זֹ֑את וְאַיֵּ֣ה כָֽל־נִפְלְאֹתָ֡יו אֲשֶׁר֩ סִפְּרוּ־לָ֨נוּ אֲבוֹתֵ֜ינוּ לֵאמֹ֗ר הֲלֹ֤א מִמִּצְרַ֨יִם֙ הֶעֱלָ֣נוּ יְהוָ֔ה וְעַתָּה֙ נְטָשָׁ֣נוּ יְהוָ֔ה וַֽיִּתְּנֵ֖נוּ בְּכַף־מִדְיָֽן׃

14
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּi֤pen 'elayv֙ yehva֔h vayּo֗'mer le֚ke bּekochaka֣ ze֔h vehoshsha'etּa֥ 'et-yishsera'e֖l mikּa֣p mideya֑n halo֖ shshelachetּiֽyka׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The LORD turned to him and said, "Go in the strength you have and save Israel out of Midian’s hand. Am I not sending you?"

וַיִּ֤פֶן אֵלָיו֙ יְהוָ֔ה וַיֹּ֗אמֶר לֵ֚ךְ בְּכֹחֲךָ֣ זֶ֔ה וְהוֹשַׁעְתָּ֥ אֶת־יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל מִכַּ֣ף מִדְיָ֑ן הֲלֹ֖א שְׁלַחְתִּֽיךָ׃

15
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֤'mer 'elayv֙ bּi֣y 'adona֔y bּamּa֥h 'oshshi֖y'a 'et-yishsera'e֑l hinּe֤h 'alepּiy֙ hadּa֣l bּimenashshּe֔h ve'anoki֥y hatzּa'i֖yr bּebe֥yt 'abiֽy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"Pardon me, my lord," Gideon replied, "but how can I save Israel? My clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my family."

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֵלָיו֙ בִּ֣י אֲדֹנָ֔י בַּמָּ֥ה אוֹשִׁ֖יעַ אֶת־יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל הִנֵּ֤ה אַלְפִּי֙ הַדַּ֣ל בִּמְנַשֶּׁ֔ה וְאָנֹכִ֥י הַצָּעִ֖יר בְּבֵ֥ית אָבִֽי׃

16
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֤'mer 'elayv֙ yehva֔h kּi֥y 'eheye֖h 'imּa֑ke vehikּiyta֥ 'et-mideya֖n kּe'i֥yshsh 'echaֽd׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The LORD answered, "I will be with you, and you will strike down all the Midianites, leaving none alive."

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֵלָיו֙ יְהוָ֔ה כִּ֥י אֶהְיֶ֖ה עִמָּ֑ךְ וְהִכִּיתָ֥ אֶת־מִדְיָ֖ן כְּאִ֥ישׁ אֶחָֽד׃

17
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֣'mer 'ela֔yv 'im-na֛ matza֥'tiy che֖n bּe'eyne֑yka ve'ashsi֤yta lּiy֙ '֔ot shsha'atּa֖h medabּe֥r 'imּiֽy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Gideon replied, "If now I have found favour in your eyes, give me a sign that it is really you talking to me.

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֵלָ֔יו אִם־נָ֛א מָצָ֥אתִי חֵ֖ן בְּעֵינֶ֑יךָ וְעָשִׂ֤יתָ לִּי֙ א֔וֹת שָׁאַתָּ֖ה מְדַבֵּ֥ר עִמִּֽי׃

18
Phonetic (Hebrew): al-na֨ tamu֤shsh mizּeh֙ 'ad-bּo'i֣y 'ele֔yka vehoֽtze'tiy֙ 'et-minechati֔y vehinּachetּi֖y lepane֑yka vayּo'ma֕r 'anoki֥y 'eshshe֖b 'a֥d shshubeֽka׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Please do not go away until I come back and bring my offering and set it before you." And the LORD said, "I will wait until you return."

אַל־נָ֨א תָמֻ֤שׁ מִזֶּה֙ עַד־בֹּאִ֣י אֵלֶ֔יךָ וְהֹֽצֵאתִי֙ אֶת־מִנְחָתִ֔י וְהִנַּחְתִּ֖י לְפָנֶ֑יךָ וַיֹּאמַ֕ר אָנֹכִ֥י אֵשֵׁ֖ב עַ֥ד שׁוּבֶֽךָ׃

19
Phonetic (Hebrew): vegide'֣on bּa֗ vayּa֤'ashs gּediֽy-'izּiym֙ ve'eypat-qe֣mach matzּ֔ot habּashsar֙ shsa֣m bּasּa֔l vehamּara֖q shsa֣m bּapּar֑ur vayּotze֥ 'ela֛yv 'el-tּa֥chat ha'ela֖h vayּagּaֽshsh׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)Gideon went in, prepared a young goat, and from an ephah of flour he made bread without yeast. Putting the meat in a basket and its broth in a pot, he brought them out and offered them to him under the oak.

וְגִדְע֣וֹן בָּ֗א וַיַּ֤עַשׂ גְּדִֽי־עִזִּים֙ וְאֵיפַת־קֶ֣מַח מַצּ֔וֹת הַבָּשָׂר֙ שָׂ֣ם בַּסַּ֔ל וְהַמָּרַ֖ק שָׂ֣ם בַּפָּר֑וּר וַיּוֹצֵ֥א אֵלָ֛יו אֶל־תַּ֥חַת הָאֵלָ֖ה וַיַּגַּֽשׁ׃ס

20
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֨'mer 'ela֜yv male'a֣ke ha'elohi֗ym qa֣ch 'et-habּashsa֤r ve'et-hamּatzּot֙ vehanּach֙ 'el-hasּe֣la halּa֔z ve'et-hamּara֖q shshep֑oke vayּa֖'ashs kּeֽn׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The angel of God said to him, "Take the meat and the unleavened bread, place them on this rock, and pour out the broth." And Gideon did so.

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר אֵלָ֜יו מַלְאַ֣ךְ הָאֱלֹהִ֗ים קַ֣ח אֶת־הַבָּשָׂ֤ר וְאֶת־הַמַּצּוֹת֙ וְהַנַּח֙ אֶל־הַסֶּ֣לַע הַלָּ֔ז וְאֶת־הַמָּרַ֖ק שְׁפ֑וֹךְ וַיַּ֖עַשׂ כֵּֽן׃

21
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּishshela֞ch male'a֣ke yehva֗h 'et-qetze֤h hamּishshe'e֨net֙ 'ashshe֣r bּeyad֔o vayּigּa֥ bּabּashsa֖r ubamּatzּ֑ot vatּa֨'al ha'e֜shsh min-hatzּ֗ur vatּo֤'kal 'et-habּashsar֙ ve'et-hamּatzּ֔ot umale'a֣ke yehva֔h hala֖ke me'eynaֽyv׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then the angel of the LORD touched the meat and the unleavened bread with the tip of the staff that was in his hand. Fire flared from the rock, consuming the meat and the bread. And the angel of the LORD disappeared.

וַיִּשְׁלַ֞ח מַלְאַ֣ךְ יְהוָ֗ה אֶת־קְצֵ֤ה הַמִּשְׁעֶ֨נֶת֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר בְּיָד֔וֹ וַיִּגַּ֥ע בַּבָּשָׂ֖ר וּבַמַּצּ֑וֹת וַתַּ֨עַל הָאֵ֜שׁ מִן־הַצּ֗וּר וַתֹּ֤אכַל אֶת־הַבָּשָׂר֙ וְאֶת־הַמַּצּ֔וֹת וּמַלְאַ֣ךְ יְהוָ֔ה הָלַ֖ךְ מֵעֵינָֽיו׃

22
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֣re gּide'֔on kּiֽy-male'a֥ke yehva֖h h֑u s vayּo֣'mer gּide'֗on 'ahahּ֙ 'adona֣y yehvi֔h kּiֽy-'al-kּe֤n ra'i֨ytiy֙ male'a֣ke yehva֔h pּani֖ym 'el-pּaniֽym׃
Edified Edition (EDE)When Gideon realised that it was the angel of the LORD, he exclaimed, "Alas, Sovereign the LORD! I have seen the angel of the LORD face to face!"

וַיַּ֣רְא גִּדְע֔וֹן כִּֽי־מַלְאַ֥ךְ יְהוָ֖ה ה֑וּא ס וַיֹּ֣אמֶר גִּדְע֗וֹן אֲהָהּ֙ אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהוִ֔ה כִּֽי־עַל־כֵּ֤ן רָאִ֨יתִי֙ מַלְאַ֣ךְ יְהוָ֔ה פָּנִ֖ים אֶל־פָּנִֽים׃

23
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֨'mer l֧o yehva֛h shshal֥om leka֖ 'al-tּiyra֑ lo֖ tּamֽut׃
Edified Edition (EDE)But the LORD said to him, "Peace! Do not be afraid. You are not going to die."

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר ל֧וֹ יְהוָ֛ה שָׁל֥וֹם לְךָ֖ אַל־תִּירָ֑א לֹ֖א תָּמֽוּת׃

24
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiben֩ shsha֨m gּide'֤on mizebּe֨cha֙ laֽyhva֔h vayּiqera'-l֥o yehva֖h shshal֑om 'a֚d hayּ֣om hazּe֔h 'ode֕nּu bּe'apera֖t 'abi֥y ha'ezeriֽy׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)So Gideon built an altar to the LORD there and called it the LORD Is Peace. To this day it stands in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.

וַיִּבֶן֩ שָׁ֨ם גִּדְע֤וֹן מִזְבֵּ֨חַ֙ לַֽיהוָ֔ה וַיִּקְרָא־ל֥וֹ יְהוָ֖ה שָׁל֑וֹם עַ֚ד הַיּ֣וֹם הַזֶּ֔ה עוֹדֶ֕נּוּ בְּעָפְרָ֖ת אֲבִ֥י הָעֶזְרִֽי׃פ

25
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehiy֮ bּalּa֣yelah hahu'֒ vayּo֧'mer l֣o yehva֗h qa֤ch 'et-pּar-hashshּor֙ 'ashshe֣r le'abi֔yka upa֥r hashshּeni֖y shshe֣ba shshani֑ym veharasetּa֗ 'et-mizebּa֤ch habּa֨'al֙ 'ashshe֣r le'abi֔yka ve'et-ha'ashshera֥h 'ashsher-'ala֖yv tּikeroֽt׃
Edified Edition (EDE)That same night the LORD said to him, "Take the second bull from your father’s herd, the one seven years old. Tear down your father’s altar to Baal and cut down the Asherah pole beside it.

וַיְהִי֮ בַּלַּ֣יְלָה הַהוּא֒ וַיֹּ֧אמֶר ל֣וֹ יְהוָ֗ה קַ֤ח אֶת־פַּר־הַשּׁוֹר֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר לְאָבִ֔יךָ וּפַ֥ר הַשֵּׁנִ֖י שֶׁ֣בַע שָׁנִ֑ים וְהָרַסְתָּ֗ אֶת־מִזְבַּ֤ח הַבַּ֨עַל֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר לְאָבִ֔יךָ וְאֶת־הָאֲשֵׁרָ֥ה אֲשֶׁר־עָלָ֖יו תִּכְרֹֽת׃

26

Edified Edition (EDE)Then build a proper kind of altar to the LORD your God on the top of this height. Using the wood of the Asherah pole that you cut down, offer the second bull as a burnt offering."

וּבָנִ֨יתָ מִזְבֵּ֜חַ לַיהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֶ֗יךָ עַ֣ל רֹ֧אשׁ הַמָּע֛וֹז הַזֶּ֖ה בַּמַּֽעֲרָכָ֑ה וְלָֽקַחְתָּ֙ אֶת־הַפָּ֣ר הַשֵּׁנִ֔י וְהַעֲלִ֣יתָ עוֹלָ֔ה בַּעֲצֵ֥י הָאֲשֵׁרָ֖ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר תִּכְרֹֽת׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiqּa֨ch gּide'֜on 'ashsara֤h 'anashshiym֙ meֽ'abada֔yv vayּa֕'ashs kּa'ashshe֛r dּibּe֥r 'ela֖yv yehva֑h vayehi֡y kּa'ashshe֣r yare'֩ 'et-bּe֨yt 'abi֜yv ve'et-'aneshshe֥y ha'i֛yr me'ashs֥ot yoma֖m vayּa֥'ashs laֽyelah׃
Edified Edition (EDE)So Gideon took ten of his servants and did as the LORD told him. But because he was afraid of his family and the townspeople, he did it at night rather than in the daytime.

וַיִּקַּ֨ח גִּדְע֜וֹן עֲשָׂרָ֤ה אֲנָשִׁים֙ מֵֽעֲבָדָ֔יו וַיַּ֕עַשׂ כַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר דִּבֶּ֥ר אֵלָ֖יו יְהוָ֑ה וַיְהִ֡י כַּאֲשֶׁ֣ר יָרֵא֩ אֶת־בֵּ֨ית אָבִ֜יו וְאֶת־אַנְשֵׁ֥י הָעִ֛יר מֵעֲשׂ֥וֹת יוֹמָ֖ם וַיַּ֥עַשׂ לָֽיְלָה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּashshekּi֜ymu 'aneshshe֤y ha'iyr֙ bּabּo֔qer vehinּe֤h nutּatz֙ mizebּa֣ch habּa֔'al veha'ashshera֥h 'ashsher-'ala֖yv kּora֑tah ve'et֙ hapּa֣r hashshּeni֔y hoֽ'ala֔h 'al-hamּizebּe֖cha habּanֽuy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)In the morning when the townspeople got up, there was Baal’s altar, demolished, with the Asherah pole beside it cut down and the second bull sacrificed on the newly built altar!

וַיַּשְׁכִּ֜ימוּ אַנְשֵׁ֤י הָעִיר֙ בַּבֹּ֔קֶר וְהִנֵּ֤ה נֻתַּץ֙ מִזְבַּ֣ח הַבַּ֔עַל וְהָאֲשֵׁרָ֥ה אֲשֶׁר־עָלָ֖יו כֹּרָ֑תָה וְאֵת֙ הַפָּ֣ר הַשֵּׁנִ֔י הֹֽעֲלָ֔ה עַל־הַמִּזְבֵּ֖חַ הַבָּנֽוּי׃

29
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּoֽ'meru֙ 'i֣yshsh 'el-re'e֔hu mi֥y 'ashsa֖h hadּaba֣r hazּe֑h vaֽyּidereshshu֙ vayebaqeshsh֔u vayּo֣'mer֔u gּide'on֙ bּen-yo'a֔shsh 'ashsa֖h hadּaba֥r hazּeֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)They asked each other, "Who did this?" When they carefully investigated, they were told, "Gideon son of Joash did it."

וַיֹּֽאמְרוּ֙ אִ֣ישׁ אֶל־רֵעֵ֔הוּ מִ֥י עָשָׂ֖ה הַדָּבָ֣ר הַזֶּ֑ה וַֽיִּדְרְשׁוּ֙ וַיְבַקְשׁ֔וּ וַיֹּ֣אמְר֔וּ גִּדְעוֹן֙ בֶּן־יוֹאָ֔שׁ עָשָׂ֖ה הַדָּבָ֥ר הַזֶּֽה׃

30
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֨'mer֜u 'aneshshe֤y ha'iyr֙ 'el-yo'a֔shsh hotze֥ 'et-bּineka֖ veyamo֑t kּi֤y natatz֙ 'et-mizebּa֣ch habּa֔'al veki֥y kara֖t ha'ashshera֥h 'ashsher-'alaֽyv׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The townspeople demanded of Joash, "Bring out your son. He must die, because he has broken down Baal’s altar and cut down the Asherah pole beside it."

וַיֹּ֨אמְר֜וּ אַנְשֵׁ֤י הָעִיר֙ אֶל־יוֹאָ֔שׁ הוֹצֵ֥א אֶת־בִּנְךָ֖ וְיָמֹ֑ת כִּ֤י נָתַץ֙ אֶת־מִזְבַּ֣ח הַבַּ֔עַל וְכִ֥י כָרַ֖ת הָאֲשֵׁרָ֥ה אֲשֶׁר־עָלָֽיו׃

31
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֣'mer yo'a֡shsh lekol֩ 'ashsher-'amed֨u 'ala֜yv ha'atּe֣m ׀ tּeriyb֣un labּa֗'al 'im-'atּem֙ tּoshshiy'֣un 'ot֔o 'ashshe֨r yari֥yb l֛o yuma֖t 'ad-habּo֑qer 'im-'elohi֥ym hu'֙ ya֣reb l֔o kּi֥y nata֖tz 'eֽt-mizebּechֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)But Joash replied to the hostile crowd around him, "Are you going to plead Baal’s cause? Are you trying to save him? Whoever fights for him shall be put to death by morning! If Baal really is a god, he can defend himself when someone breaks down his altar."

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר יוֹאָ֡שׁ לְכֹל֩ אֲשֶׁר־עָמְד֨וּ עָלָ֜יו הַאַתֶּ֣ם ׀ תְּרִיב֣וּן לַבַּ֗עַל אִם־אַתֶּם֙ תּוֹשִׁיע֣וּן אוֹת֔וֹ אֲשֶׁ֨ר יָרִ֥יב ל֛וֹ יוּמַ֖ת עַד־הַבֹּ֑קֶר אִם־אֱלֹהִ֥ים הוּא֙ יָ֣רֶב ל֔וֹ כִּ֥י נָתַ֖ץ אֶֽת־מִזְבְּחֽוֹ׃

32
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiqera'-l֥o bayּom-hah֖u yerubּa֣'al le'mo֑r ya֤reb bּo֙ habּa֔'al kּi֥y nata֖tz 'eֽt-mizebּechֽo׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)So because Gideon broke down Baal’s altar, they gave him the name Jerub-Baal that day, saying, "Let Baal contend with him."

וַיִּקְרָא־ל֥וֹ בַיּוֹם־הַה֖וּא יְרֻבַּ֣עַל לֵאמֹ֑ר יָ֤רֶב בּוֹ֙ הַבַּ֔עַל כִּ֥י נָתַ֖ץ אֶֽת־מִזְבְּחֽוֹ׃פ

33
Phonetic (Hebrew): vekal-mideya֧n va'amale֛q ubeney-qe֖dem ne'esep֣u yachedּa֑v vayּa'aber֥u vaֽyּachan֖u bּe'e֥meq yizere'eֽ'l׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Now all the Midianites, Amalekites and other eastern peoples joined forces and crossed over the Jordan and camped in the Valley of Jezreel.

וְכָל־מִדְיָ֧ן וַעֲמָלֵ֛ק וּבְנֵי־קֶ֖דֶם נֶאֶסְפ֣וּ יַחְדָּ֑ו וַיַּעַבְר֥וּ וַֽיַּחֲנ֖וּ בְּעֵ֥מֶק יִזְרְעֶֽאל׃

34
Phonetic (Hebrew): ver֣ucha yehva֔h labeshsha֖h 'et-gּide'֑on vayּiteqa'֙ bּashshּopa֔r vayizּa'e֥q 'abiy'e֖zer 'acharaֽyv׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then the Spirit of the LORD came on Gideon, and he blew a trumpet, summoning the Abiezrites to follow him.

וְר֣וּחַ יְהוָ֔ה לָבְשָׁ֖ה אֶת־גִּדְע֑וֹן וַיִּתְקַע֙ בַּשּׁוֹפָ֔ר וַיִזָּעֵ֥ק אֲבִיעֶ֖זֶר אַחֲרָֽיו׃

35
Phonetic (Hebrew): umale'akiym֙ shshala֣ch bּekal-menashshּe֔h vayizּa'e֥q gּam-h֖u 'achara֑yv umale'aki֣ym shshala֗ch bּe'ashshe֤r ubizebulun֙ ubenapetּali֔y vaֽyּa'al֖u liqera'taֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)He sent messengers throughout Manasseh, calling them to arms, and also into Asher, Zebulun and Naphtali, so that they too went up to meet them.

וּמַלְאָכִים֙ שָׁלַ֣ח בְּכָל־מְנַשֶּׁ֔ה וַיִזָּעֵ֥ק גַּם־ה֖וּא אַחֲרָ֑יו וּמַלְאָכִ֣ים שָׁלַ֗ח בְּאָשֵׁ֤ר וּבִזְבֻלוּן֙ וּבְנַפְתָּלִ֔י וַֽיַּעֲל֖וּ לִקְרָאתָֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֥'mer gּide'֖on 'el-ha'elohi֑ym 'im-yeshsheka֞ moshshi֧y'a bּeyadi֛y 'et-yishsera'e֖l kּa'ashshe֥r dּibּaֽretּa׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Gideon said to God, "If you will save Israel by my hand as you have promised,

וַיֹּ֥אמֶר גִּדְע֖וֹן אֶל־הָאֱלֹהִ֑ים אִם־יֶשְׁךָ֞ מוֹשִׁ֧יעַ בְּיָדִ֛י אֶת־יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר דִּבַּֽרְתָּ׃

37
Phonetic (Hebrew): hinּe֣h 'anoki֗y matzּi֛yg 'et-gּizּa֥t hatzּe֖mer bּagּo֑ren 'i֡m tal֩ yiheye֨h 'aֽl-hagּizּa֜h lebadּa֗hּ ve'al-kּal-ha'a֨retz֙ cho֔reb veyada'etּi֗y kּiֽy-toshshi֧y'a bּeyadi֛y 'et-yishsera'e֖l kּa'ashshe֥r dּibּaֽretּa׃
Edified Edition (EDE)look, I will place a fleece [1] on the threshing floor. If there is dew only on the fleece and all the ground is dry, then I will know that you will save Israel by my hand, as you said."

הִנֵּ֣ה אָנֹכִ֗י מַצִּ֛יג אֶת־גִּזַּ֥ת הַצֶּ֖מֶר בַּגֹּ֑רֶן אִ֡ם טַל֩ יִהְיֶ֨ה עַֽל־הַגִּזָּ֜ה לְבַדָּ֗הּ וְעַל־כָּל־הָאָ֨רֶץ֙ חֹ֔רֶב וְיָדַעְתִּ֗י כִּֽי־תוֹשִׁ֧יעַ בְּיָדִ֛י אֶת־יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר דִּבַּֽרְתָּ׃

38
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehiy-ke֕n vayּashshekּem֙ miֽmּachora֔t vayּa֖zar 'et-hagּizּa֑h vayּi֤metz tal֙ min-hagּizּa֔h mel֥o hasּe֖pel maֽyim׃
Edified Edition (EDE)And that is what happened. Gideon rose early the next day; he squeezed the fleece and wrung out the dew, a bowlful of water.

וַיְהִי־כֵ֕ן וַיַּשְׁכֵּם֙ מִֽמָּחֳרָ֔ת וַיָּ֖זַר אֶת־הַגִּזָּ֑ה וַיִּ֤מֶץ טַל֙ מִן־הַגִּזָּ֔ה מְל֥וֹא הַסֵּ֖פֶל מָֽיִם׃

39
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֤'mer gּide'on֙ 'el-ha֣'elohi֔ym 'al-yi֤char 'apּeka֙ bּi֔y va'adabּera֖h 'a֣ke hapּa֑'am 'anasּe֤h nּa'-raq-hapּa֨'am֙ bּagּizּa֔h yehiy-na֨ cho֤reb 'el-hagּizּah֙ lebadּa֔hּ ve'al-kּal-ha'a֖retz yiֽheyeh-tּaֽl׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then Gideon said to God, "Do not be angry with me. Let me make just one more request. Allow me one more test with the fleece, but this time make the fleece dry and let the ground be covered with dew."

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר גִּדְעוֹן֙ אֶל־הָ֣אֱלֹהִ֔ים אַל־יִ֤חַר אַפְּךָ֙ בִּ֔י וַאֲדַבְּרָ֖ה אַ֣ךְ הַפָּ֑עַם אֲנַסֶּ֤ה נָּא־רַק־הַפַּ֨עַם֙ בַּגִּזָּ֔ה יְהִי־נָ֨א חֹ֤רֶב אֶל־הַגִּזָּה֙ לְבַדָּ֔הּ וְעַל־כָּל־הָאָ֖רֶץ יִֽהְיֶה־טָּֽל׃

40
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֧'ashs 'elohi֛ym kּe֖n bּalּa֣yelah hah֑u vayehiy-cho֤reb 'el-hagּizּah֙ lebadּa֔hּ ve'al-kּal-ha'a֖retz ha֥yah taֽl׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)That night God did so. Only the fleece was dry; all the ground was covered with dew.

וַיַּ֧עַשׂ אֱלֹהִ֛ים כֵּ֖ן בַּלַּ֣יְלָה הַה֑וּא וַיְהִי־חֹ֤רֶב אֶל־הַגִּזָּה֙ לְבַדָּ֔הּ וְעַל־כָּל־הָאָ֖רֶץ הָ֥יָה טָֽל׃פ
