Chapter 9
1
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּe֨leke 'abiyme֤leke bּen-yerubּa֨'al֙ shsheke֔mah 'el-'ache֖y 'imּ֑o vayedabּe֣r 'aleyhe֔m ve'el-kּal-mishshepּa֛chat bּeyt-'abi֥y 'imּ֖o le'moֽr׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Abimelek son of Jerub-Baal went to his mother’s brothers in Shechem and said to them and to all his mother’s clan,

וַיֵּ֨לֶךְ אֲבִימֶ֤לֶךְ בֶּן־יְרֻבַּ֨עַל֙ שְׁכֶ֔מָה אֶל־אֲחֵ֖י אִמּ֑וֹ וַיְדַבֵּ֣ר אֲלֵיהֶ֔ם וְאֶל־כָּל־מִשְׁפַּ֛חַת בֵּית־אֲבִ֥י אִמּ֖וֹ לֵאמֹֽר׃

2
Phonetic (Hebrew): dּabּeru-na֞ bּe'azene֨y kal-bּa'ale֣y shshekem֮ mah-tּ֣ob lakem֒ hameshsho֨l bּake֜m shshibe'i֣ym 'i֗yshsh kּo֚l bּene֣y yerubּa֔'al 'im-meshsho֥l bּake֖m 'i֣yshsh 'echa֑d uzekaretּe֕m kּiֽy-'atzemekem ubeshsareke֖m 'aniֽy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"Ask all the citizens of Shechem, 'Which is better for you: to have all seventy of Jerub-Baal’s sons rule over you, or just one man?' Remember, I am your flesh and blood."

דַּבְּרוּ־נָ֞א בְּאָזְנֵ֨י כָל־בַּעֲלֵ֣י שְׁכֶם֮ מַה־טּ֣וֹב לָכֶם֒ הַמְשֹׁ֨ל בָּכֶ֜ם שִׁבְעִ֣ים אִ֗ישׁ כֹּ֚ל בְּנֵ֣י יְרֻבַּ֔עַל אִם־מְשֹׁ֥ל בָּכֶ֖ם אִ֣ישׁ אֶחָ֑ד וּזְכַרְתֶּ֕ם כִּֽי־עַצְמֵכֶם וּבְשַׂרְכֶ֖ם אָנִֽי׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayedabּer֨u 'acheֽy-'imּ֜o 'ala֗yv bּe'azeney֙ kּal-bּa'ale֣y shsheke֔m 'e֥t kּal-hadּebari֖ym ha'e֑lּeh vayּe֤t libּam֙ 'achare֣y 'abiyme֔leke kּi֥y 'amer֖u 'achi֥ynu hֽu'׃
Edified Edition (EDE)When the brothers repeated all this to the citizens of Shechem, they were inclined to follow Abimelek, for they said, "He is our relative."

וַיְדַבְּר֨וּ אֲחֵֽי־אִמּ֜וֹ עָלָ֗יו בְּאָזְנֵי֙ כָּל־בַּעֲלֵ֣י שְׁכֶ֔ם אֵ֥ת כָּל־הַדְּבָרִ֖ים הָאֵ֑לֶּה וַיֵּ֤ט לִבָּם֙ אַחֲרֵ֣י אֲבִימֶ֔לֶךְ כִּ֥י אָמְר֖וּ אָחִ֥ינוּ הֽוּא׃

4
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּitּenu-lo֙ shshibe'i֣ym kּe֔sep mibּe֖ytּ ba֣'al bּeri֑yt vayּishsekּo֨r bּahe֜m 'abiyme֗leke 'anashshi֤ym reyqiym֙ upo֣chazi֔ym vayּelek֖u 'acharaֽyv׃
Edified Edition (EDE)They gave him seventy shekels of silver from the temple of Baal-Berith, and Abimelek used it to hire reckless scoundrels, who became his followers.

וַיִּתְּנוּ־לוֹ֙ שִׁבְעִ֣ים כֶּ֔סֶף מִבֵּ֖יתּ בַ֣עַל בְּרִ֑ית וַיִּשְׂכֹּ֨ר בָּהֶ֜ם אֲבִימֶ֗לֶךְ אֲנָשִׁ֤ים רֵיקִים֙ וּפֹ֣חֲזִ֔ים וַיֵּלְכ֖וּ אַחֲרָֽיו׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּabo֤ beyt-'abiyv֙ 'apera֔tah vaֽyּaharo֞g 'et-'echa֧yv bּeneֽy-yerubּa֛'al shshibּe'i֥ym 'i֖yshsh 'al-'e֣ben 'echa֑t vayּiuate֞r yota֧m bּen-yerubּa֛'al haqּato֖n kּi֥y nechebּaֽ'׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)He went to his father’s home in Ophrah and on one stone murdered his seventy brothers, the sons of Jerub-Baal. But Jotham, the youngest son of Jerub-Baal, escaped by hiding.

וַיָּבֹ֤א בֵית־אָבִיו֙ עָפְרָ֔תָה וַֽיַּהֲרֹ֞ג אֶת־אֶחָ֧יו בְּנֵֽי־יְרֻבַּ֛עַל שִׁבְּעִ֥ים אִ֖ישׁ עַל־אֶ֣בֶן אֶחָ֑ת וַיִּוָּתֵ֞ר יוֹתָ֧ם בֶּן־יְרֻבַּ֛עַל הַקָּטֹ֖ן כִּ֥י נֶחְבָּֽא׃ס

6
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּe'a֨sep֜u kּal-bּa'ale֤y shshekem֙ vekal-bּe֣yt milּ֔o vayּe֣lek֔u vayּameli֥yku 'et-'abiyme֖leke leme֑leke 'im-'el֥on mutzּa֖b 'ashshe֥r bּishshekeֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then all the citizens of Shechem and Beth Millo gathered beside the great tree at the pillar in Shechem to crown Abimelek king.

וַיֵּאָ֨סְפ֜וּ כָּל־בַּעֲלֵ֤י שְׁכֶם֙ וְכָל־בֵּ֣ית מִלּ֔וֹא וַיֵּ֣לְכ֔וּ וַיַּמְלִ֥יכוּ אֶת־אֲבִימֶ֖לֶךְ לְמֶ֑לֶךְ עִם־אֵל֥וֹן מֻצָּ֖ב אֲשֶׁ֥ר בִּשְׁכֶֽם׃

7
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּagּi֣du leyota֗m vayּe֨leke֙ vaֽyּa'amod֙ bּero֣'shsh har-gּerizi֔ym vayּishsּa֥ qol֖o vayּiqera֑ vayּo֣'mer lahe֗m shshime'֤u 'elay֙ bּa'ale֣y shsheke֔m veyishshema֥ 'aleyke֖m 'elohiֽym׃
Edified Edition (EDE)When Jotham was told about this, he climbed up on the top of Mount Gerizim and shouted to them, "Listen to me, citizens of Shechem, so that God may listen to you.

וַיַּגִּ֣דוּ לְיוֹתָ֗ם וַיֵּ֨לֶךְ֙ וַֽיַּעֲמֹד֙ בְּרֹ֣אשׁ הַר־גְּרִזִ֔ים וַיִּשָּׂ֥א קוֹל֖וֹ וַיִּקְרָ֑א וַיֹּ֣אמֶר לָהֶ֗ם שִׁמְע֤וּ אֵלַי֙ בַּעֲלֵ֣י שְׁכֶ֔ם וְיִשְׁמַ֥ע אֲלֵיכֶ֖ם אֱלֹהִֽים׃

8
Phonetic (Hebrew): hal֤oke haֽleku֙ ha'etzi֔ym limeshsho֥cha 'aleyhe֖m me֑leke vayּo'mer֥u lazּa֖yit mlvkh maleka֥h 'aleֽynu׃
Edified Edition (EDE)One day the trees went out to anoint a king for themselves. They said to the olive tree, 'Be our king.'

הָל֤וֹךְ הָֽלְכוּ֙ הָעֵצִ֔ים לִמְשֹׁ֥חַ עֲלֵיהֶ֖ם מֶ֑לֶךְ וַיֹּאמְר֥וּ לַזַּ֖יִת מלוכה מָלְכָ֥ה עָלֵֽינוּ׃

9
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֤'mer lahem֙ hazּa֔yit hechoda֨letּiy֙ 'et-dּishsheni֔y 'ashsher-bּi֛y yekabּed֥u 'elohi֖ym va'anashshi֑ym veha֣laketּi֔y lan֖u'a 'al-ha'etziֽym׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"But the olive tree answered, 'Should I give up my oil, by which both gods and humans are honoured, to hold sway over the trees?'

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר לָהֶם֙ הַזַּ֔יִת הֶחֳדַ֨לְתִּי֙ אֶת־דִּשְׁנִ֔י אֲשֶׁר־בִּ֛י יְכַבְּד֥וּ אֱלֹהִ֖ים וַאֲנָשִׁ֑ים וְהָ֣לַכְתִּ֔י לָנ֖וּעַ עַל־הָעֵצִֽים׃

10
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo'mer֥u ha'etzi֖ym latּe'ena֑h lekiy-'a֖tּe maleki֥y 'aleֽynu׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"Next, the trees said to the fig tree, 'Come and be our king.'

וַיֹּאמְר֥וּ הָעֵצִ֖ים לַתְּאֵנָ֑ה לְכִי־אַ֖תְּ מָלְכִ֥י עָלֵֽינוּ׃

11
Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּo֤'mer lahem֙ hatּe'ena֔h hechoda֨letּiy֙ 'et-mateqi֔y ve'et-tּenubati֖y hatּoba֑h veha֣laketּi֔y lan֖u'a 'al-ha'etziֽym׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"But the fig tree replied, 'Should I give up my fruit, so good and sweet, to hold sway over the trees?'

וַתֹּ֤אמֶר לָהֶם֙ הַתְּאֵנָ֔ה הֶחֳדַ֨לְתִּי֙ אֶת־מָתְקִ֔י וְאֶת־תְּנוּבָתִ֖י הַטּוֹבָ֑ה וְהָ֣לַכְתִּ֔י לָנ֖וּעַ עַל־הָעֵצִֽים׃

12
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo'mer֥u ha'etzi֖ym lagּa֑pen lekiy-'a֖tּe mlvky maleki֥y 'aleֽynu׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"Then the trees said to the vine, 'Come and be our king.'

וַיֹּאמְר֥וּ הָעֵצִ֖ים לַגָּ֑פֶן לְכִי־אַ֖תְּ מלוכי מָלְכִ֥י עָלֵֽינוּ׃

13
Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּo֤'mer lahem֙ hagּe֔pen hechoda֨letּiy֙ 'et-tּi֣yroshshi֔y haֽmeshsamּe֥cha 'elohi֖ym va'anashshi֑ym veha֣laketּi֔y lan֖u'a 'al-ha'etziֽym׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"But the vine answered, 'Should I give up my wine, which cheers both gods and humans, to hold sway over the trees?'

וַתֹּ֤אמֶר לָהֶם֙ הַגֶּ֔פֶן הֶחֳדַ֨לְתִּי֙ אֶת־תִּ֣ירוֹשִׁ֔י הַֽמְשַׂמֵּ֥חַ אֱלֹהִ֖ים וַאֲנָשִׁ֑ים וְהָ֣לַכְתִּ֔י לָנ֖וּעַ עַל־הָעֵצִֽים׃

14
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo'mer֥u kal-ha'etzi֖ym 'el-ha'ata֑d le֥ke 'atּa֖h melake-'aleֽynu׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"Finally all the trees said to the bramble, 'Come and be our king.'

וַיֹּאמְר֥וּ כָל־הָעֵצִ֖ים אֶל־הָאָטָ֑ד לֵ֥ךְ אַתָּ֖ה מְלָךְ־עָלֵֽינוּ׃

15
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֣'mer ha'atad֮ 'el-ha'etziym֒ 'i֡m bּe'eme֣t 'atּem֩ moshshechi֨ym 'oti֤y leme֨leke֙ 'aleyke֔m bּo֖'u chas֣u betzilּi֑y ve'im-'a֕yin tּe֤tze 'eshsh֙ min-ha֣'ata֔d veto'ka֖l 'et-'areze֥y halּebanֽon׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"The bramble said to the trees, 'If you really want to anoint me king over you, come and take refuge in my shade; but if not, let fire come out of the bramble and consume the cedars of Lebanon!'

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר הָאָטָד֮ אֶל־הָעֵצִים֒ אִ֡ם בֶּאֱמֶ֣ת אַתֶּם֩ מֹשְׁחִ֨ים אֹתִ֤י לְמֶ֨לֶךְ֙ עֲלֵיכֶ֔ם בֹּ֖אוּ חֲס֣וּ בְצִלִּ֑י וְאִם־אַ֕יִן תֵּ֤צֵא אֵשׁ֙ מִן־הָ֣אָטָ֔ד וְתֹאכַ֖ל אֶת־אַרְזֵ֥י הַלְּבָנֽוֹן׃

16
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'atּa֗h 'im-bּe'eme֤t ubetamiym֙ 'ashsiyte֔m vatּameli֖yku 'et-'abiyme֑leke ve'im-toba֤h 'ashsiytem֙ 'im-yerubּa֣'al ve'im-bּeyt֔o ve'im-kּigem֥ul yada֖yv 'ashsi֥ytem lֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"Have you acted honourably and in good faith by making Abimelek king? Have you been fair to Jerub-Baal and his family? Have you treated him as he deserves?

וְעַתָּ֗ה אִם־בֶּאֱמֶ֤ת וּבְתָמִים֙ עֲשִׂיתֶ֔ם וַתַּמְלִ֖יכוּ אֶת־אֲבִימֶ֑לֶךְ וְאִם־טוֹבָ֤ה עֲשִׂיתֶם֙ עִם־יְרֻבַּ֣עַל וְעִם־בֵּית֔וֹ וְאִם־כִּגְמ֥וּל יָדָ֖יו עֲשִׂ֥יתֶם לֽוֹ׃

17
Phonetic (Hebrew): ashsher-nilecha֥m 'abi֖y 'aleyke֑m vayּashshele֤ke 'et-napeshsho֙ minּe֔ged vayּatzּe֥l 'eteke֖m miyּa֥d mideyaֽn׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Remember that my father fought for you and risked his life to rescue you from the hand of Midian.

אֲשֶׁר־נִלְחַ֥ם אָבִ֖י עֲלֵיכֶ֑ם וַיַּשְׁלֵ֤ךְ אֶת־נַפְשׁוֹ֙ מִנֶּ֔גֶד וַיַּצֵּ֥ל אֶתְכֶ֖ם מִיַּ֥ד מִדְיָֽן׃

18
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'atּe֞m qametּe֨m 'al-bּe֤yt 'abiy֙ hayּ֔om vatּahareg֧u 'et-bּana֛yv shshibe'i֥ym 'i֖yshsh 'al-'e֣ben 'echa֑t vatּameli֜yku 'et-'abiyme֤leke bּen-'amato֙ 'al-bּa'ale֣y shsheke֔m kּi֥y 'achiyke֖m hֽu'׃
Edified Edition (EDE)But today you have revolted against my father’s family. You have murdered his seventy sons on a single stone and have made Abimelek, the son of his female slave, king over the citizens of Shechem because he is your relative.

וְאַתֶּ֞ם קַמְתֶּ֨ם עַל־בֵּ֤ית אָבִי֙ הַיּ֔וֹם וַתַּהַרְג֧וּ אֶת־בָּנָ֛יו שִׁבְעִ֥ים אִ֖ישׁ עַל־אֶ֣בֶן אֶחָ֑ת וַתַּמְלִ֜יכוּ אֶת־אֲבִימֶ֤לֶךְ בֶּן־אֲמָתוֹ֙ עַל־בַּעֲלֵ֣י שְׁכֶ֔ם כִּ֥י אֲחִיכֶ֖ם הֽוּא׃

19
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'im-bּe'eme֨t ubetami֧ym 'ashsiyte֛m 'im-yerubּa֥'al ve'im-bּeyt֖o hayּ֣om hazּe֑h shsimechu֙ bּa'abiyme֔leke veyishsema֥ch gּam-h֖u bּakeֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)So if you have acted honourably and in good faith toward Jerub-Baal and his family today, may Abimelek be your joy, and may you be his!

וְאִם־בֶּאֱמֶ֨ת וּבְתָמִ֧ים עֲשִׂיתֶ֛ם עִם־יְרֻבַּ֥עַל וְעִם־בֵּית֖וֹ הַיּ֣וֹם הַזֶּ֑ה שִׂמְחוּ֙ בַּאֲבִימֶ֔לֶךְ וְיִשְׂמַ֥ח גַּם־ה֖וּא בָּכֶֽם׃

20
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'im-'a֕yin tּe֤tze 'eshsh֙ me'abiyme֔leke veto'ka֛l 'et-bּa'ale֥y shsheke֖m ve'et-bּe֣yt milּ֑o vetetze֨ 'e֜shsh mibּa'ale֤y shshekem֙ umibּe֣yt milּ֔o veto'ka֖l 'et-'abiymeֽleke׃
Edified Edition (EDE)But if you have not, let fire come out from Abimelek and consume you, citizens of Shechem and Beth Millo, and let fire come out from you, citizens of Shechem and Beth Millo, and consume Abimelek!"

וְאִם־אַ֕יִן תֵּ֤צֵא אֵשׁ֙ מֵאֲבִימֶ֔לֶךְ וְתֹאכַ֛ל אֶת־בַּעֲלֵ֥י שְׁכֶ֖ם וְאֶת־בֵּ֣ית מִלּ֑וֹא וְתֵצֵ֨א אֵ֜שׁ מִבַּעֲלֵ֤י שְׁכֶם֙ וּמִבֵּ֣ית מִלּ֔וֹא וְתֹאכַ֖ל אֶת־אֲבִימֶֽלֶךְ׃

21
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֣nas yota֔m vayּibera֖ch vayּe֣leke bּe'e֑rah vayּe֣shsheb shsha֔m mipּene֖y 'abiyme֥leke 'achiֽyv׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)Then Jotham fled, escaping to Beer, and he lived there because he was afraid of his brother Abimelek.

וַיָּ֣נָס יוֹתָ֔ם וַיִּבְרַ֖ח וַיֵּ֣לֶךְ בְּאֵ֑רָה וַיֵּ֣שֶׁב שָׁ֔ם מִפְּנֵ֖י אֲבִימֶ֥לֶךְ אָחִֽיו׃פ

22
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֧shsar 'abiyme֛leke 'al-yishsera'e֖l shshalo֥shsh shshaniֽym׃
Edified Edition (EDE)After Abimelek had governed Israel for three years,

וַיָּ֧שַׂר אֲבִימֶ֛לֶךְ עַל־יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל שָׁלֹ֥שׁ שָׁנִֽים׃

23
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּishshela֤ch 'elohiym֙ r֣ucha ra'a֔h bּe֣yn 'abiyme֔leke ube֖yn bּa'ale֣y shsheke֑m vayּibegּed֥u ba'aley-shsheke֖m bּa'abiymeֽleke׃
Edified Edition (EDE)God stirred up animosity between Abimelek and the citizens of Shechem so that they acted treacherously against him.

וַיִּשְׁלַ֤ח אֱלֹהִים֙ ר֣וּחַ רָעָ֔ה בֵּ֣ין אֲבִימֶ֔לֶךְ וּבֵ֖ין בַּעֲלֵ֣י שְׁכֶ֑ם וַיִּבְגְּד֥וּ בַעֲלֵי־שְׁכֶ֖ם בַּאֲבִימֶֽלֶךְ׃

24
Phonetic (Hebrew): lab֕o chama֖s shshibe'i֣ym bּeneֽy-yerubּa֑'al vedama֗m lashs֞um 'al-'abiyme֤leke 'achiyhem֙ 'ashshe֣r hara֣g 'ota֔m ve'al֙ bּa'ale֣y shsheke֔m 'ashsher-chizּeq֥u 'et-yada֖yv laharo֥g 'et-'echaֽyv׃
Edified Edition (EDE)God did this in order that the crime against Jerub-Baal’s seventy sons, the shedding of their blood, might be avenged on their brother Abimelek and on the citizens of Shechem, who had helped him murder his brothers.

לָב֕וֹא חֲמַ֖ס שִׁבְעִ֣ים בְּנֵֽי־יְרֻבָּ֑עַל וְדָמָ֗ם לָשׂ֞וּם עַל־אֲבִימֶ֤לֶךְ אֲחִיהֶם֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר הָרַ֣ג אוֹתָ֔ם וְעַל֙ בַּעֲלֵ֣י שְׁכֶ֔ם אֲשֶׁר־חִזְּק֥וּ אֶת־יָדָ֖יו לַהֲרֹ֥ג אֶת־אֶחָֽיו׃

25
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּashsi֣ymu lo֩ ba'ale֨y shsheke֜m me'arebi֗ym 'a֚l ra'shshe֣y hehari֔ym vayּigezel֗u 'e֛t kּal-'ashsher-ya'abo֥r 'aleyhe֖m bּadּa֑reke vayּugּa֖d la'abiymeֽleke׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)The citizens of Shechem set up ambushes against him on the hilltops, and they robbed everyone who passed that way. And this was reported to Abimelek.

וַיָּשִׂ֣ימוּ לוֹ֩ בַעֲלֵ֨י שְׁכֶ֜ם מְאָרְבִ֗ים עַ֚ל רָאשֵׁ֣י הֶהָרִ֔ים וַיִּגְזְל֗וּ אֵ֛ת כָּל־אֲשֶׁר־יַעֲבֹ֥ר עֲלֵיהֶ֖ם בַּדָּ֑רֶךְ וַיֻּגַּ֖ד לַאֲבִימֶֽלֶךְ׃פ

26
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּabo֞ gּa֤'al bּen-'e֨bed֙ ve'echa֔yv vayּa'aber֖u bּishsheke֑m vayּibetechu-b֖o bּa'ale֥y shshekeֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Now Gaal son of Ebed moved with his clan into Shechem, and its citizens put their confidence in him.

וַיָּבֹ֞א גַּ֤עַל בֶּן־עֶ֨בֶד֙ וְאֶחָ֔יו וַיַּעַבְר֖וּ בִּשְׁכֶ֑ם וַיִּבְטְחוּ־ב֖וֹ בַּעֲלֵ֥י שְׁכֶֽם׃

27
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּetze'֨u hashsּade֜h vaֽyּibetzer֤u 'et-kּaremeyhem֙ vaֽyּiderek֔u vaֽyּa'ashs֖u hilּuli֑ym vayּabo֨'u֙ bּe֣yt 'eֽloֽheyhe֔m vayּoֽ'kelu֙ vayּishshetּ֔u vaֽyeqalel֖u 'et-'abiymeֽleke׃
Edified Edition (EDE)After they had gone out into the fields and gathered the grapes and trodden them, they held a festival in the temple of their god. While they were eating and drinking, they cursed Abimelek.

וַיֵּצְא֨וּ הַשָּׂדֶ֜ה וַֽיִּבְצְר֤וּ אֶת־כַּרְמֵיהֶם֙ וַֽיִּדְרְכ֔וּ וַֽיַּעֲשׂ֖וּ הִלּוּלִ֑ים וַיָּבֹ֨אוּ֙ בֵּ֣ית אֱֽלֹֽהֵיהֶ֔ם וַיֹּֽאכְלוּ֙ וַיִּשְׁתּ֔וּ וַֽיְקַלְל֖וּ אֶת־אֲבִימֶֽלֶךְ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֣'mer ׀ gּa֣'al bּen-'e֗bed miֽy-'abiyme֤leke umiֽy-shshekem֙ kּi֣y na'abede֔nּu halo֥ ben-yerubּa֖'al uzebu֣l pּeqiyd֑o 'ibed֗u 'et-'aneshshe֤y chamor֙ 'abi֣y shsheke֔m umadּ֖u'a na'abede֥nּu 'anaֽchenu׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then Gaal son of Ebed said, "Who is Abimelek, and who is Shechem, that we should be subject to him? Isn’t he Jerub-Baal’s son, and isn’t Zebul his deputy? Serve the family of Hamor, Shechem’s father! Why should we serve Abimelek?

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר ׀ גַּ֣עַל בֶּן־עֶ֗בֶד מִֽי־אֲבִימֶ֤לֶךְ וּמִֽי־שְׁכֶם֙ כִּ֣י נַעַבְדֶ֔נּוּ הֲלֹ֥א בֶן־יְרֻבַּ֖עַל וּזְבֻ֣ל פְּקִיד֑וֹ עִבְד֗וּ אֶת־אַנְשֵׁ֤י חֲמוֹר֙ אֲבִ֣י שְׁכֶ֔ם וּמַדּ֖וּעַ נַעַבְדֶ֥נּוּ אֲנָֽחְנוּ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): umi֨y yitּe֜n 'et-ha'a֤m hazּeh֙ bּeyadi֔y ve'asi֖yrah 'et-'abiyme֑leke vayּo֨'mer֙ la'abiyme֔leke rabּe֥h tzeba'aka֖ vatzeֽ'ah׃
Edified Edition (EDE)If only this people were under my command! Then I would get rid of him. I would say to Abimelek, 'Call up your whole army!'"

וּמִ֨י יִתֵּ֜ן אֶת־הָעָ֤ם הַזֶּה֙ בְּיָדִ֔י וְאָסִ֖ירָה אֶת־אֲבִימֶ֑לֶךְ וַיֹּ֨אמֶר֙ לַאֲבִימֶ֔לֶךְ רַבֶּ֥ה צְבָאֲךָ֖ וָצֵֽאָה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּishshema֗ zebul֙ shsar-ha'i֔yr 'et-dּibere֖y gּa֣'al bּen-'a֑bed vayּi֖char 'apּֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)When Zebul the governor of the city heard what Gaal son of Ebed said, he was very angry.

וַיִּשְׁמַ֗ע זְבֻל֙ שַׂר־הָעִ֔יר אֶת־דִּבְרֵ֖י גַּ֣עַל בֶּן־עָ֑בֶד וַיִּ֖חַר אַפּֽוֹ׃

31
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּishshela֧ch male'aki֛ym 'el-'abiyme֖leke bּetarema֣h le'mo֑r hinּeh֩ ga֨'al bּen-'e֤bed ve'echayv֙ bּa'i֣ym shsheke֔mah vehinּa֛m tzari֥ym 'et-ha'i֖yr 'aleֽyka׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Under cover he sent messengers to Abimelek, saying, "Gaal son of Ebed and his clan have come to Shechem and are stirring up the city against you.

וַיִּשְׁלַ֧ח מַלְאָכִ֛ים אֶל־אֲבִימֶ֖לֶךְ בְּתָרְמָ֣ה לֵאמֹ֑ר הִנֵּה֩ גַ֨עַל בֶּן־עֶ֤בֶד וְאֶחָיו֙ בָּאִ֣ים שְׁכֶ֔מָה וְהִנָּ֛ם צָרִ֥ים אֶת־הָעִ֖יר עָלֶֽיךָ׃

32
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'atּah֙ q֣um la֔yelah 'atּa֖h veha'a֣m 'ashsher-'itּa֑ke ve'ero֖b bּashsּadeֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Now then, during the night come with your men and wait in ambush in the fields.

וְעַתָּה֙ ק֣וּם לַ֔יְלָה אַתָּ֖ה וְהָעָ֣ם אֲשֶׁר־אִתָּ֑ךְ וֶאֱרֹ֖ב בַּשָּׂדֶֽה׃

33
Phonetic (Hebrew): vehaya֤h babּo֨qer֙ kּizero֣cha hashshּe֔meshsh tּashshekּi֖ym upashshatetּa֣ 'al-ha'i֑yr vehinּeh-h֞u veha'a֤m 'ashsher-'itּo֙ yotze'i֣ym 'ele֔yka ve'ashsi֣yta lּ֔o kּa'ashshe֖r tּimetza֥ yadeֽka׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)In the morning at sunrise, advance against the city. When Gaal and those with him come out against you, do whatever your hand finds to do."

וְהָיָ֤ה בַבֹּ֨קֶר֙ כִּזְרֹ֣חַ הַשֶּׁ֔מֶשׁ תַּשְׁכִּ֖ים וּפָשַׁטְתָּ֣ עַל־הָעִ֑יר וְהִנֵּה־ה֞וּא וְהָעָ֤ם אֲשֶׁר־אִתּוֹ֙ יֹצְאִ֣ים אֵלֶ֔יךָ וְעָשִׂ֣יתָ לּ֔וֹ כַּאֲשֶׁ֖ר תִּמְצָ֥א יָדֶֽךָ׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֧qam 'abiyme֛leke vekal-ha'a֥m 'ashsher-'imּ֖o la֑yelah vayּe'ereb֣u 'al-shsheke֔m 'arebּa'a֖h ra'shshiֽym׃
Edified Edition (EDE)So Abimelek and all his troops set out by night and took up their positions near Shechem in four companies.

וַיָּ֧קָם אֲבִימֶ֛לֶךְ וְכָל־הָעָ֥ם אֲשֶׁר־עִמּ֖וֹ לָ֑יְלָה וַיֶּאֶרְב֣וּ עַל־שְׁכֶ֔ם אַרְבָּעָ֖ה רָאשִֽׁים׃

35
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּetze'֙ gּa֣'al bּen-'e֔bed vayּa'amo֕d pּe֖tach shsha֣'ar ha'i֑yr vayּa֧qam 'abiyme֛leke veha'a֥m 'ashsher-'itּ֖o min-hamּa'eraֽb׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Now Gaal son of Ebed had gone out and was standing at the entrance of the city gate just as Abimelek and his troops came out from their ambush.

וַיֵּצֵא֙ גַּ֣עַל בֶּן־עֶ֔בֶד וַיַּעֲמֹ֕ד פֶּ֖תַח שַׁ֣עַר הָעִ֑יר וַיָּ֧קָם אֲבִימֶ֛לֶךְ וְהָעָ֥ם אֲשֶׁר־אִתּ֖וֹ מִן־הַמַּאְרָֽב׃

36
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּare'-gּa'al֮ 'et-ha'am֒ vayּo֣'mer 'el-zebu֔l hinּeh-'a֣m yore֔d mera'shshe֖y hehari֑ym vayּo֤'mer 'elayv֙ zebu֔l 'e֣t tze֧l hehari֛ym 'atּa֥h ro'e֖h kּa'anashshiֽym׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)When Gaal saw them, he said to Zebul, "Look, people are coming down from the tops of the mountains!" Zebul replied, "You mistake the shadows of the mountains for men."

וַיַּרְא־גַּעַל֮ אֶת־הָעָם֒ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֶל־זְבֻ֔ל הִנֵּה־עָ֣ם יוֹרֵ֔ד מֵרָאשֵׁ֖י הֶהָרִ֑ים וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֵלָיו֙ זְבֻ֔ל אֵ֣ת צֵ֧ל הֶהָרִ֛ים אַתָּ֥ה רֹאֶ֖ה כָּאֲנָשִֽׁים׃ס

37
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֨sep '֣od gּa'al֮ ledabּer֒ vayּo֕'mer hinּeh-'am֙ yֽoredi֔ym me'i֖m tabּ֣ur ha'a֑retz vero'shsh-'echa֣d bּa֔ midּe֖reke 'el֥on me'oneniֽym׃
Edified Edition (EDE)But Gaal spoke up again: "Look, people are coming down from the central hill, and a company is coming from the direction of the diviners’ oak tree."

וַיֹּ֨סֶף ע֣וֹד גַּעַל֮ לְדַבֵּר֒ וַיֹּ֕אמֶר הִנֵּה־עָם֙ יֽוֹרְדִ֔ים מֵעִ֖ם טַבּ֣וּר הָאָ֑רֶץ וְרֹאשׁ־אֶחָ֣ד בָּ֔א מִדֶּ֖רֶךְ אֵל֥וֹן מְעוֹנְנִֽים׃

38
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֨'mer 'ela֜yv zebu֗l 'ayּe֨h 'ep֥o pi֨yka֙ 'ashshe֣r tּo'ma֔r mi֥y 'abiyme֖leke kּi֣y na'abede֑nּu halo֨ ze֤h ha'am֙ 'ashshe֣r ma'a֣setּah bּ֔o tze'-na֥ 'atּa֖h vehilּa֥chem bּֽo׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)Then Zebul said to him, "Where is your big talk now, you who said, 'Who is Abimelek that we should be subject to him?' Aren’t these the men you ridiculed? Go out and fight them!"

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר אֵלָ֜יו זְבֻ֗ל אַיֵּ֨ה אֵפ֥וֹא פִ֨יךָ֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר תֹּאמַ֔ר מִ֥י אֲבִימֶ֖לֶךְ כִּ֣י נַעַבְדֶ֑נּוּ הֲלֹ֨א זֶ֤ה הָעָם֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר מָאַ֣סְתָּה בּ֔וֹ צֵא־נָ֥א עַתָּ֖ה וְהִלָּ֥חֶם בּֽוֹ׃ס

39
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּe֣tze ga֔'al lipene֖y bּa'ale֣y shsheke֑m vayּilּa֖chem bּa'abiymeֽleke׃
Edified Edition (EDE)So Gaal led out the citizens of Shechem and fought Abimelek.

וַיֵּ֣צֵא גַ֔עַל לִפְנֵ֖י בַּעֲלֵ֣י שְׁכֶ֑ם וַיִּלָּ֖חֶם בַּאֲבִימֶֽלֶךְ׃

40
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiredּepe֣hu 'abiyme֔leke vayּa֖nas mipּana֑yv vaֽyּipּel֛u chalali֥ym rabּi֖ym 'ad-pּe֥tach hashshּaֽ'ar׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Abimelek chased him all the way to the entrance of the gate, and many were killed as they fled.

וַיִּרְדְּפֵ֣הוּ אֲבִימֶ֔לֶךְ וַיָּ֖נָס מִפָּנָ֑יו וַֽיִּפְּל֛וּ חֲלָלִ֥ים רַבִּ֖ים עַד־פֶּ֥תַח הַשָּֽׁעַר׃

41
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּe֥shsheb 'abiyme֖leke bּa'ruma֑h vayega֧reshsh zebu֛l 'et-gּa֥'al ve'et-'echa֖yv mishshּe֥bet bּishshekeֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Abimelek stayed in Arumah, and Zebul drove Gaal and his clan out of Shechem.

וַיֵּ֥שֶׁב אֲבִימֶ֖לֶךְ בָּארוּמָ֑ה וַיְגָ֧רֶשׁ זְבֻ֛ל אֶת־גַּ֥עַל וְאֶת־אֶחָ֖יו מִשֶּׁ֥בֶת בִּשְׁכֶֽם׃

42
Phonetic (Hebrew): vaֽyehiy֙ miֽmּachora֔t vayּetze֥ ha'a֖m hashsּade֑h vayּagּi֖du la'abiymeֽleke׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The next day the people of Shechem went out to the fields, and this was reported to Abimelek.

וַֽיְהִי֙ מִֽמָּחֳרָ֔ת וַיֵּצֵ֥א הָעָ֖ם הַשָּׂדֶ֑ה וַיַּגִּ֖דוּ לַאֲבִימֶֽלֶךְ׃

43
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiqּa֣ch 'et-ha'a֗m vaֽyּechetzem֙ lishsheloshsha֣h ra'shshi֔ym vayּe'ero֖b bּashsּade֑h vayּa֗re vehinּe֤h ha'am֙ yotze֣ min-ha'i֔yr vayּa֥qam 'aleyhe֖m vayּakּeֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)So he took his men, divided them into three companies and set an ambush in the fields. When he saw the people coming out of the city, he rose to attack them.

וַיִּקַּ֣ח אֶת־הָעָ֗ם וַֽיֶּחֱצֵם֙ לִשְׁלֹשָׁ֣ה רָאשִׁ֔ים וַיֶּאֱרֹ֖ב בַּשָּׂדֶ֑ה וַיַּ֗רְא וְהִנֵּ֤ה הָעָם֙ יֹצֵ֣א מִן־הָעִ֔יר וַיָּ֥קָם עֲלֵיהֶ֖ם וַיַּכֵּֽם׃

44
Phonetic (Hebrew): va'abiyme֗leke vehara'shshiym֙ 'ashshe֣r 'imּ֔o pּashshet֕u vayּa֣'amed֔u pּe֖tach shsha֣'ar ha'i֑yr ushshene֣y hֽara'shshi֗ym pּaֽshshet֛u 'aֽl-kּal-'ashshe֥r bּashsּade֖h vayּakּֽum׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Abimelek and the companies with him rushed forward to a position at the entrance of the city gate. Then two companies attacked those in the fields and struck them down.

וַאֲבִימֶ֗לֶךְ וְהָרָאשִׁים֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר עִמּ֔וֹ פָּשְׁט֕וּ וַיַּ֣עַמְד֔וּ פֶּ֖תַח שַׁ֣עַר הָעִ֑יר וּשְׁנֵ֣י הָֽרָאשִׁ֗ים פָּֽשְׁט֛וּ עַֽל־כָּל־אֲשֶׁ֥ר בַּשָּׂדֶ֖ה וַיַּכּֽוּם׃

45
Phonetic (Hebrew): va'abiyme֜leke nilecha֣m bּa'i֗yr kּo֚l hayּ֣om hah֔u vayּilekּod֙ 'et-ha'i֔yr ve'et-ha'a֥m 'ashsher-bּa֖hּ hara֑g vayּitּotz֙ 'et-ha'i֔yr vayּizera'e֖ha meֽlach׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)All that day Abimelek pressed his attack against the city until he had captured it and killed its people. Then he demolished the city and scattered salt over it.

וַאֲבִימֶ֜לֶךְ נִלְחָ֣ם בָּעִ֗יר כֹּ֚ל הַיּ֣וֹם הַה֔וּא וַיִּלְכֹּד֙ אֶת־הָעִ֔יר וְאֶת־הָעָ֥ם אֲשֶׁר־בָּ֖הּ הָרָ֑ג וַיִּתֹּץ֙ אֶת־הָעִ֔יר וַיִּזְרָעֶ֖הָ מֶֽלַח׃פ

Phonetic (Hebrew): vaֽyּishsheme'֔u kּaֽl-bּa'ale֖y miֽgedּal-shsheke֑m vayּabo֣'u 'el-tzeri֔ycha bּe֖yt 'e֥l bּeriֽyt׃
Edified Edition (EDE)On hearing this, the citizens in the tower of Shechem went into the stronghold of the temple of El-Berith.

וַֽיִּשְׁמְע֔וּ כָּֽל־בַּעֲלֵ֖י מִֽגְדַּל־שְׁכֶ֑ם וַיָּבֹ֣אוּ אֶל־צְרִ֔יחַ בֵּ֖ית אֵ֥ל בְּרִֽית׃

47
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּugּa֖d la'abiyme֑leke kּi֣y hiֽteqabּetz֔u kּaֽl-bּa'ale֖y miֽgedּal-shshekeֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)When Abimelek heard that they had assembled there,

וַיֻּגַּ֖ד לַאֲבִימֶ֑לֶךְ כִּ֣י הִֽתְקַבְּצ֔וּ כָּֽל־בַּעֲלֵ֖י מִֽגְדַּל־שְׁכֶֽם׃

48
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֨'al 'abiyme֜leke har-tzalem֗on hu'֮ vekal-ha'a֣m 'ashsher-'itּo֒ vayּiqּach֩ 'abiyme֨leke 'et-haqּaredּumּ֜ot bּeyad֗o vayּikerot֙ shsoka֣t 'etzi֔ym vayּi֨shsּa'e֔ha vayּa֖shsem 'al-shshikem֑o vayּo֜'mer 'el-ha'a֣m 'ashsher-'imּ֗o ma֤h re'iytem֙ 'ashsi֔ytiy mahar֖u 'ashs֥u kamֽoniy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)he and all his men went up Mount Zalmon. He took an axe and cut off some branches, which he lifted to his shoulders. He ordered the men with him, "Quick! Do what you have seen me do!"

וַיַּ֨עַל אֲבִימֶ֜לֶךְ הַר־צַלְמ֗וֹן הוּא֮ וְכָל־הָעָ֣ם אֲשֶׁר־אִתּוֹ֒ וַיִּקַּח֩ אֲבִימֶ֨לֶךְ אֶת־הַקַּרְדֻּמּ֜וֹת בְּיָד֗וֹ וַיִּכְרֹת֙ שׂוֹכַ֣ת עֵצִ֔ים וַיִּ֨שָּׂאֶ֔הָ וַיָּ֖שֶׂם עַל־שִׁכְמ֑וֹ וַיֹּ֜אמֶר אֶל־הָעָ֣ם אֲשֶׁר־עִמּ֗וֹ מָ֤ה רְאִיתֶם֙ עָשִׂ֔יתִי מַהֲר֖וּ עֲשׂ֥וּ כָמֽוֹנִי׃

49
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּikeret֨u gam-kּal-ha'a֜m 'i֣yshsh shsoko֗h vayּe֨lek֜u 'achare֤y 'abiyme֨leke֙ vayּashsi֣ymu 'aֽl-hatzּeri֔ycha vayּatzּi֧ytu 'aleyhe֛m 'eֽt-hatzּeri֖ycha bּa'e֑shsh vayּamu֜tu gּa֣m kּal-'aneshshe֧y miֽgedּal-shsheke֛m kּe'e֖lep 'i֥yshsh ve'ishshּaֽh׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)So all the men cut branches and followed Abimelek. They piled them against the stronghold and set it on fire with the people still inside. So all the people in the tower of Shechem, about a thousand men and women, also died.

וַיִּכְרְת֨וּ גַם־כָּל־הָעָ֜ם אִ֣ישׁ שׂוֹכֹ֗ה וַיֵּ֨לְכ֜וּ אַחֲרֵ֤י אֲבִימֶ֨לֶךְ֙ וַיָּשִׂ֣ימוּ עַֽל־הַצְּרִ֔יחַ וַיַּצִּ֧יתוּ עֲלֵיהֶ֛ם אֶֽת־הַצְּרִ֖יחַ בָּאֵ֑שׁ וַיָּמֻ֜תוּ גַּ֣ם כָּל־אַנְשֵׁ֧י מִֽגְדַּל־שְׁכֶ֛ם כְּאֶ֖לֶף אִ֥ישׁ וְאִשָּֽׁה׃פ

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּe֥leke 'abiyme֖leke 'el-tּebe֑tz vayּi֥chan bּetebe֖tz vaֽyּilekּedaֽhּ׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Next Abimelek went to Thebez and besieged it and captured it.

וַיֵּ֥לֶךְ אֲבִימֶ֖לֶךְ אֶל־תֵּבֵ֑ץ וַיִּ֥חַן בְּתֵבֵ֖ץ וַֽיִּלְכְּדָֽהּ׃

51
Phonetic (Hebrew): umigedּal-'oz֮ haya֣h betoke-ha'iyr֒ vayּanu֨su shsha֜mּah kּal-ha'anashshi֣ym vehanּashshi֗ym vekol֙ bּa'ale֣y ha'i֔yr vaֽyּisegּer֖u bּa'ada֑m vaֽyּa'al֖u 'al-gּa֥g hamּigedּaֽl׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Inside the city, however, was a strong tower, to which all the men and women, all the people of the city, had fled. They had locked themselves in and climbed up on the tower roof.

וּמִגְדַּל־עֹז֮ הָיָ֣ה בְתוֹךְ־הָעִיר֒ וַיָּנֻ֨סוּ שָׁ֜מָּה כָּל־הָאֲנָשִׁ֣ים וְהַנָּשִׁ֗ים וְכֹל֙ בַּעֲלֵ֣י הָעִ֔יר וַֽיִּסְגְּר֖וּ בַּעֲדָ֑ם וַֽיַּעֲל֖וּ עַל־גַּ֥ג הַמִּגְדָּֽל׃

52
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּabo֤ 'abiyme֨leke֙ 'ad-hamּigedּa֔l vayּilּa֖chem bּ֑o vayּigּa֛shsh 'ad-pּe֥tach hamּigedּa֖l leshsarep֥o ba'eֽshsh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Abimelek went to the tower and attacked it. But as he approached the entrance to the tower to set it on fire,

וַיָּבֹ֤א אֲבִימֶ֨לֶךְ֙ עַד־הַמִּגְדָּ֔ל וַיִּלָּ֖חֶם בּ֑וֹ וַיִּגַּ֛שׁ עַד־פֶּ֥תַח הַמִּגְדָּ֖ל לְשָׂרְפ֥וֹ בָאֵֽשׁ׃

53
Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּashshele֞ke 'ishshּa֥h 'acha֛t pּe֥lach re֖keb 'al-ro֣'shsh 'abiyme֑leke vatּa֖ritz 'et-gּulegּaletּֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)a woman dropped an upper millstone on his head and cracked his skull.

וַתַּשְׁלֵ֞ךְ אִשָּׁ֥ה אַחַ֛ת פֶּ֥לַח רֶ֖כֶב עַל־רֹ֣אשׁ אֲבִימֶ֑לֶךְ וַתָּ֖רִץ אֶת־גֻּלְגָּלְתּֽוֹ׃

54
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiqera֨ mehera֜h 'el-hanּa֣'ar ׀ noshse֣ kela֗yv vayּo֤'mer lo֙ shshelo֤p charebּeka֙ um֣otete֔niy pּen-yo֥'meru li֖y 'ishshּa֣h haraga֑tehu vayּideqere֥hu na'ar֖o vayּamoֽt׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Hurriedly he called to his armour-bearer, "Draw your sword and kill me, so that they can’t say, 'A woman killed him.'" So his servant ran him through, and he died.

וַיִּקְרָ֨א מְהֵרָ֜ה אֶל־הַנַּ֣עַר ׀ נֹשֵׂ֣א כֵלָ֗יו וַיֹּ֤אמֶר לוֹ֙ שְׁלֹ֤ף חַרְבְּךָ֙ וּמ֣וֹתְתֵ֔נִי פֶּן־יֹ֥אמְרוּ לִ֖י אִשָּׁ֣ה הֲרָגָ֑תְהוּ וַיִּדְקְרֵ֥הוּ נַעֲר֖וֹ וַיָּמֹֽת׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּire'֥u 'iֽyshsh-yishsera'e֖l kּi֣y me֣t 'abiyme֑leke vayּelek֖u 'i֥yshsh limeqomֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)When the Israelites saw that Abimelek was dead, they went home.

וַיִּרְא֥וּ אִֽישׁ־יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל כִּ֣י מֵ֣ת אֲבִימֶ֑לֶךְ וַיֵּלְכ֖וּ אִ֥ישׁ לִמְקֹמֽוֹ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֣shsheb 'elohi֔ym 'e֖t ra'a֣t 'abiyme֑leke 'ashshe֤r 'ashsah֙ le'abi֔yv laharo֖g 'et-shshibe'i֥ym 'echaֽyv׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Thus God repaid the wickedness that Abimelek had done to his father by murdering his seventy brothers.

וַיָּ֣שֶׁב אֱלֹהִ֔ים אֵ֖ת רָעַ֣ת אֲבִימֶ֑לֶךְ אֲשֶׁ֤ר עָשָׂה֙ לְאָבִ֔יו לַהֲרֹ֖ג אֶת־שִׁבְעִ֥ים אֶחָֽיו׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'e֗t kּal-ra'at֙ 'aneshshe֣y shsheke֔m heshshi֥yb 'elohi֖ym bּero'shsha֑m vatּabo֣ 'aleyhe֔m qiֽlala֖t yota֥m bּen-yerubּaֽ'al׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)God also made the people of Shechem pay for all their wickedness. The curse of Jotham son of Jerub-Baal came on them.

וְאֵ֗ת כָּל־רָעַת֙ אַנְשֵׁ֣י שְׁכֶ֔ם הֵשִׁ֥יב אֱלֹהִ֖ים בְּרֹאשָׁ֑ם וַתָּבֹ֣א אֲלֵיהֶ֔ם קִֽלֲלַ֖ת יוֹתָ֥ם בֶּן־יְרֻבָּֽעַל׃פ
