Chapter 2

Phonetic (Hebrew): eykah֩ ya'i֨yb bּe'apּ֤o ׀ 'adonay֙ 'et-bּat-tziyּ֔on hishsheli֤yke mishshּama֨yim֙ 'e֔retz tּipe'e֖ret yishsera'e֑l velo'-zaka֥r hadom-ragela֖yv bּey֥om 'apּֽo׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)How has the Lord covered the daughter of Zion with a cloud in His anger, and cast down from heaven to the earth the beauty of Israel, and remembered not His footstool in the day of His anger!

אֵיכָה֩ יָעִ֨יב בְּאַפּ֤וֹ ׀ אֲדֹנָי֙ אֶת־בַּת־צִיּ֔וֹן הִשְׁלִ֤יךְ מִשָּׁמַ֨יִם֙ אֶ֔רֶץ תִּפְאֶ֖רֶת יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וְלֹא־זָכַ֥ר הֲדֹם־רַגְלָ֖יו בְּי֥וֹם אַפּֽוֹ׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): bּilּa֨ 'adona֜y l velo֣ chama֗l 'e֚t kּal-ne'֣ot ya'aqo֔b hara֧s bּe'eberat֛o mibetzere֥y bat-yehuda֖h higּi֣y'a la'a֑retz chilּe֥l mamelaka֖h veshsareֽyha׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)The Lord has swallowed up all the habitations of Jacob, and has not pitied: He has thrown down in His wrath the strongholds of the daughter of Judah; He has brought them down to the ground: He has polluted the kingdom and the princes thereof.

בִּלַּ֨ע אֲדֹנָ֜י לא וְלֹ֣א חָמַ֗ל אֵ֚ת כָּל־נְא֣וֹת יַעֲקֹ֔ב הָרַ֧ס בְּעֶבְרָת֛וֹ מִבְצְרֵ֥י בַת־יְהוּדָ֖ה הִגִּ֣יעַ לָאָ֑רֶץ חִלֵּ֥ל מַמְלָכָ֖ה וְשָׂרֶֽיהָ׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): gּada֣ bּaֽchoriy 'a֗p kּo֚l qe֣ren yishsera'e֔l heshshi֥yb 'ach֛or yemiyn֖o mipּene֣y 'oye֑b vayּibe'a֤r bּeya'aqob֙ kּe'e֣shsh leֽhaba֔h 'akela֖h sabiֽyb׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)He has cut off in His fierce anger all the horn of Israel: He has drawn back His right hand from before the enemy, and He burned against Jacob like a flaming fire, which devours round about.

גָּדַ֣ע בָּֽחֳרִי אַ֗ף כֹּ֚ל קֶ֣רֶן יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל הֵשִׁ֥יב אָח֛וֹר יְמִינ֖וֹ מִפְּנֵ֣י אוֹיֵ֑ב וַיִּבְעַ֤ר בְּיַעֲקֹב֙ כְּאֵ֣שׁ לֶֽהָבָ֔ה אָכְלָ֖ה סָבִֽיב׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): dּara֨ke qashshetּ֜o kּe'oye֗b nitzּa֤b yemiyno֙ kּetza֔r vaֽyּaharo֔g kּo֖l machamadּey-'a֑yin bּe'o֨hel֙ bּat-tziyּ֔on shshapa֥ke kּa'e֖shsh chamatֽo׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)He has bent His bow like an enemy: He stood with His right hand as an adversary, and slew all that were pleasant to the eye in the tabernacle of the daughter of Zion: He poured out His fury like fire.

דָּרַ֨ךְ קַשְׁתּ֜וֹ כְּאוֹיֵ֗ב נִצָּ֤ב יְמִינוֹ֙ כְּצָ֔ר וַֽיַּהֲרֹ֔ג כֹּ֖ל מַחֲמַדֵּי־עָ֑יִן בְּאֹ֨הֶל֙ בַּת־צִיּ֔וֹן שָׁפַ֥ךְ כָּאֵ֖שׁ חֲמָתֽוֹ׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): haya֨h 'adona֤y ׀ kּe'oyeb֙ bּilּa֣ yishsera'e֔l bּilּa'֙ kּal-'aremenote֔yha shshiche֖t mibetzara֑yv vayּe֨reb֙ bּebat-yehuda֔h tּa'aniyּa֖h va'aniyּaֽh׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)The Lord was as an enemy: He has swallowed up Israel, He has swallowed up all her palaces: He has destroyed his strongholds, and has increased in the daughter of Judah mourning and lamentation.

הָיָ֨ה אֲדֹנָ֤י ׀ כְּאוֹיֵב֙ בִּלַּ֣ע יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל בִּלַּע֙ כָּל־אַרְמְנוֹתֶ֔יהָ שִׁחֵ֖ת מִבְצָרָ֑יו וַיֶּ֨רֶב֙ בְּבַת־יְהוּדָ֔ה תַּאֲנִיָּ֖ה וַאֲנִיָּֽה׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּachemo֤s kּagּan֙ shsukּ֔o shshiche֖t mo'ad֑o shshikּa֨ch yehva֤h ׀ bּetziyּon֙ mo'e֣d veshshabּa֔t vayּine'a֥tz bּezaֽ'am-'apּ֖o me֥leke vekoheֽn׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)And He has violently taken away His tabernacle, as if it were of a garden: He has destroyed His places of the assembly: the LORD has caused the solemn feasts and sabbaths to be forgotten in Zion, and has despised in the indignation of His anger the king and the priest.

וַיַּחְמֹ֤ס כַּגַּן֙ שֻׂכּ֔וֹ שִׁחֵ֖ת מוֹעֲד֑וֹ שִׁכַּ֨ח יְהוָ֤ה ׀ בְּצִיּוֹן֙ מוֹעֵ֣ד וְשַׁבָּ֔ת וַיִּנְאַ֥ץ בְּזַֽעַם־אַפּ֖וֹ מֶ֥לֶךְ וְכֹהֵֽן׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): zana֨ch 'adona֤y ׀ mizebּecho֙ ni'e֣r miqedּashsh֔o hisegּiyr֙ bּeyad-'oye֔b chomo֖t 'aremenote֑yha q֛ol naten֥u bּebeyt-yehva֖h kּey֥om mo'eֽd׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)The Lord has cast off His altar, He has abhorred His sanctuary, He has given up into the hand of the enemy the walls of her palaces; they have made a noise in the house of the LORD, as in the day of a solemn feast.

זָנַ֨ח אֲדֹנָ֤י ׀ מִזְבְּחוֹ֙ נִאֵ֣ר מִקְדָּשׁ֔וֹ הִסְגִּיר֙ בְּיַד־אוֹיֵ֔ב חוֹמֹ֖ת אַרְמְנוֹתֶ֑יהָ ק֛וֹל נָתְנ֥וּ בְּבֵית־יְהוָ֖ה כְּי֥וֹם מוֹעֵֽד׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): chashsha֨b yehva֤h ׀ lehashshechiyt֙ choma֣t bּat-tziyּ֔on na֣tah qa֔v lo'-heshshi֥yb yad֖o mibּalּe֑'a vayּֽa'abel-che֥l vechoma֖h yachedּa֥v 'umelaֽlu׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)The LORD has purposed to destroy the wall of the daughter of Zion: He has stretched out a line, He has not withdrawn His hand from destroying: therefore He made the rampart and the wall to lament; they languished together.

חָשַׁ֨ב יְהוָ֤ה ׀ לְהַשְׁחִית֙ חוֹמַ֣ת בַּת־צִיּ֔וֹן נָ֣טָה קָ֔ו לֹא־הֵשִׁ֥יב יָד֖וֹ מִבַּלֵּ֑עַ וַיַּֽאֲבֶל־חֵ֥ל וְחוֹמָ֖ה יַחְדָּ֥ו אֻמְלָֽלוּ׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): tabe'֤u ba'a֨retz֙ shshe'are֔yha 'ibּa֥d veshshibּa֖r bּeriyche֑yha malekּa֨hּ veshsare֤yha bagּoyim֙ 'e֣yn tּora֔h gּam-nebiy'e֕yha lo'-matze'֥u chaz֖on meyehvaֽh׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)Her gates are sunk into the ground; He has destroyed and broken her bars: her king and her princes are among the Gentiles: the law is no more; her prophets also find no vision from the LORD.

טָבְע֤וּ בָאָ֨רֶץ֙ שְׁעָרֶ֔יהָ אִבַּ֥ד וְשִׁבַּ֖ר בְּרִיחֶ֑יהָ מַלְכָּ֨הּ וְשָׂרֶ֤יהָ בַגּוֹיִם֙ אֵ֣ין תּוֹרָ֔ה גַּם־נְבִיאֶ֕יהָ לֹא־מָצְא֥וּ חָז֖וֹן מֵיְהוָֽה׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): yeshsheb֨u la'a֤retz yidּemu֙ ziqene֣y bat-tziyּ֔on heֽ'el֤u 'apar֙ 'al-ro'shsha֔m chager֖u shsaqּi֑ym hori֤ydu la'a֨retz֙ ro'shsha֔n bּetulo֖t yerushshalaiֽm׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)The elders of the daughter of Zion sit upon the ground, and keep silence: they have cast up dust upon their heads; they have girded themselves with sackcloth: the virgins of Jerusalem hang down their heads to the ground.

יֵשְׁב֨וּ לָאָ֤רֶץ יִדְּמוּ֙ זִקְנֵ֣י בַת־צִיּ֔וֹן הֶֽעֱל֤וּ עָפָר֙ עַל־רֹאשָׁ֔ם חָגְר֖וּ שַׂקִּ֑ים הוֹרִ֤ידוּ לָאָ֨רֶץ֙ רֹאשָׁ֔ן בְּתוּלֹ֖ת יְרוּשָׁלִָֽם׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): kּal֨u badּema'֤ot 'eynay֙ chomaremer֣u me'a֔y nishshepּa֤ke la'a֨retz֙ kּebedi֔y 'al-shshe֖ber bּat-'amּi֑y bּeֽ'ate֤p 'olel֙ veyone֔q bּirechob֖ot qireyaֽh׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)Mine eyes do fail with tears, my bowels are troubled, my liver is poured upon the earth, for the destruction of the daughter of my people; because the children and the sucklings swoon in the streets of the city.

כָּל֨וּ בַדְּמָע֤וֹת עֵינַי֙ חֳמַרְמְר֣וּ מֵעַ֔י נִשְׁפַּ֤ךְ לָאָ֨רֶץ֙ כְּבֵדִ֔י עַל־שֶׁ֖בֶר בַּת־עַמִּ֑י בֵּֽעָטֵ֤ף עוֹלֵל֙ וְיוֹנֵ֔ק בִּרְחֹב֖וֹת קִרְיָֽה׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): le'imּotam֙ yoֽ'mer֔u 'ayּe֖h dּaga֣n vaya֑yin bּehiֽte'atּepa֤m kּeֽchalal֙ bּirechob֣ot 'i֔yr bּehishshetּapּe֣ke napeshsha֔m 'el-che֖yq 'imּotaֽm׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)They say to their mothers, "Where is corn and wine?" when they swooned as the wounded in the streets of the city, when their soul was poured out into their mothers' bosom.

לְאִמֹּתָם֙ יֹֽאמְר֔וּ אַיֵּ֖ה דָּגָ֣ן וָיָ֑יִן בְּהִֽתְעַטְּפָ֤ם כֶּֽחָלָל֙ בִּרְחֹב֣וֹת עִ֔יר בְּהִשְׁתַּפֵּ֣ךְ נַפְשָׁ֔ם אֶל־חֵ֖יק אִמֹּתָֽם׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): maֽh-'a'iyde֞ke ma֣h 'adamּeh-lּa֗ke habּat֙ yer֣ushshalai֔m ma֤h 'ashsheveh-lּake֙ va'anaֽchame֔ke bּetula֖t bּat-tziyּ֑on kּiֽy-gad֥ol kּayּa֛m shshibere֖ke mi֥y yirepּa'-laֽke׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)What thing shall I take to witness for you? what thing shall I liken to you, O daughter of Jerusalem? what shall I equal to you, that I may comfort you, O virgin daughter of Zion? for your breach is great like the sea: who can heal you?

מָֽה־אֲעִידֵ֞ךְ מָ֣ה אֲדַמֶּה־לָּ֗ךְ הַבַּת֙ יְר֣וּשָׁלִַ֔ם מָ֤ה אַשְׁוֶה־לָּךְ֙ וַאֲנַֽחֲמֵ֔ךְ בְּתוּלַ֖ת בַּת־צִיּ֑וֹן כִּֽי־גָד֥וֹל כַּיָּ֛ם שִׁבְרֵ֖ךְ מִ֥י יִרְפָּא־לָֽךְ׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): nebiy'a֗yike cha֤zu lake֙ shsha֣ve vetape֔l veloֽ'-gilּ֥u 'al-'avone֖ke lehashshi֣yb shbytk shshebute֑ke vayּe֣chezu la֔ke mashse'֥ot shsha֖ve umadּuchiֽym׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)Your prophets have seen vain and foolish things for you: and they have not discovered your iniquity, to turn away your captivity; but have seen for you false burdens and causes of banishment.

נְבִיאַ֗יִךְ חָ֤זוּ לָךְ֙ שָׁ֣וְא וְתָפֵ֔ל וְלֹֽא־גִלּ֥וּ עַל־עֲוֺנֵ֖ךְ לְהָשִׁ֣יב שביתך שְׁבוּתֵ֑ךְ וַיֶּ֣חֱזוּ לָ֔ךְ מַשְׂא֥וֹת שָׁ֖וְא וּמַדּוּחִֽים׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): saֽpeq֨u 'ala֤yike kּapּa֨yim֙ kּal-'o֣berey de֔reke shshaֽrequ֙ vayּani֣'u ro'shsha֔m 'al-bּa֖t yerushshala֑im hazo֣'t ha'i֗yr shsheyּoֽ'meru֙ kּeli֣ylat yo֔piy mashs֖oshs lekal-ha'aֽretz׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)All that pass by clap their hands at you; they hiss and wag their head at the daughter of Jerusalem, saying, "Is this the city that men call The perfection of beauty, The joy of the whole earth?"

סָֽפְק֨וּ עָלַ֤יִךְ כַּפַּ֨יִם֙ כָּל־עֹ֣בְרֵי דֶ֔רֶךְ שָֽׁרְקוּ֙ וַיָּנִ֣עוּ רֹאשָׁ֔ם עַל־בַּ֖ת יְרוּשָׁלִָ֑ם הֲזֹ֣את הָעִ֗יר שֶׁיֹּֽאמְרוּ֙ כְּלִ֣ילַת יֹ֔פִי מָשׂ֖וֹשׂ לְכָל־הָאָֽרֶץ׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): pּatz֨u 'ala֤yike pּiyhem֙ kּal-'֣oyeba֔yike shshaֽrequ֙ vayּaֽcharequ-shshe֔n 'amer֖u bּilּa֑'enu 'a֣ke ze֥h hayּ֛om shsheqּiuiynu֖hu matza֥'nu ra'iֽynu׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)All your enemies have opened their mouth against you: they hiss and gnash the teeth: they say, "We have swallowed her up: certainly this is the day that we looked for; we have found, we have seen it."

פָּצ֨וּ עָלַ֤יִךְ פִּיהֶם֙ כָּל־א֣וֹיְבַ֔יִךְ שָֽׁרְקוּ֙ וַיַּֽחַרְקוּ־שֵׁ֔ן אָמְר֖וּ בִּלָּ֑עְנוּ אַ֣ךְ זֶ֥ה הַיּ֛וֹם שֶׁקִּוִּינֻ֖הוּ מָצָ֥אנוּ רָאִֽינוּ׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): ashsa֨h yehva֜h 'ashshe֣r zama֗m bּitzּa֤ 'emerato֙ 'ashshe֣r tziua֣h miֽymey-qe֔dem hara֖s velo֣ chama֑l vayeshsamּa֤ch 'ala֨yike֙ 'oye֔b heri֖ym qe֥ren tzaraֽyike׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)The LORD has done that which He had devised; He has fulfilled His word that He had commanded in the days of old: He has thrown down, and has not pitied: and He has caused your enemy to rejoice over you, He has set up the horn of your adversaries.

עָשָׂ֨ה יְהוָ֜ה אֲשֶׁ֣ר זָמָ֗ם בִּצַּ֤ע אֶמְרָתוֹ֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר צִוָּ֣ה מִֽימֵי־קֶ֔דֶם הָרַ֖ס וְלֹ֣א חָמָ֑ל וַיְשַׂמַּ֤ח עָלַ֨יִךְ֙ אוֹיֵ֔ב הֵרִ֖ים קֶ֥רֶן צָרָֽיִךְ׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): tza'a֥q libּa֖m 'el-'adona֑y choma֣t bּat-tzi֠yּon hori֨ydiy kanּa֤chal dּime'ah֙ yoma֣m vala֔yelah 'aֽl-tּitּeni֤y pugat֙ la֔ke 'al-tּidּo֖m bּat-'eyneֽke׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)Their heart cried to the Lord, "O wall of the daughter of Zion, let tears run down like a river day and night: give yourself no rest; let not the apple of your eye cease."

צָעַ֥ק לִבָּ֖ם אֶל־אֲדֹנָ֑י חוֹמַ֣ת בַּת־צִ֠יּוֹן הוֹרִ֨ידִי כַנַּ֤חַל דִּמְעָה֙ יוֹמָ֣ם וָלַ֔יְלָה אַֽל־תִּתְּנִ֤י פוּגַת֙ לָ֔ךְ אַל־תִּדֹּ֖ם בַּת־עֵינֵֽךְ׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): q֣umiy ׀ ro֣nּiy blyl balּa֗yelah lero'shsh֙ 'ashshemur֔ot shshipeki֤y kamּa֨yim֙ libּe֔ke no֖kach pּene֣y 'adona֑y shse'i֧y 'ela֣yv kּapּa֗yike 'al-ne֨peshsh֙ 'ֽolala֔yike ha'atupi֥ym bּera'a֖b bּero֥'shsh kּal-chutzֽot׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)"Arise, cry out in the night: in the beginning of the watches pour out your heart like water before the face of the Lord: lift up your hands toward Him for the life of your young children, that faint for hunger in the top of every street."

ק֣וּמִי ׀ רֹ֣נִּי בליל בַלַּ֗יְלָה לְרֹאשׁ֙ אַשְׁמֻר֔וֹת שִׁפְכִ֤י כַמַּ֨יִם֙ לִבֵּ֔ךְ נֹ֖כַח פְּנֵ֣י אֲדֹנָ֑י שְׂאִ֧י אֵלָ֣יו כַּפַּ֗יִךְ עַל־נֶ֨פֶשׁ֙ עֽוֹלָלַ֔יִךְ הָעֲטוּפִ֥ים בְּרָעָ֖ב בְּרֹ֥אשׁ כָּל־חוּצֽוֹת׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): re'e֤h yehvah֙ veֽhabּi֔ytah lemi֖y 'ola֣letּa kּo֑h 'im-tּo'ka֨lenah nashshi֤ym pּireyam֙ 'olale֣y tipּuchi֔ym 'im-yehare֛g bּemiqedּa֥shsh 'adona֖y kּohe֥n venabiֽy'׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)Behold, O LORD, and consider to whom You hast done this. Shall the women eat their fruit, and children of a span long? shall the priest and the prophet be slain in the sanctuary of the Lord?

רְאֵ֤ה יְהוָה֙ וְֽהַבִּ֔יטָה לְמִ֖י עוֹלַ֣לְתָּ כֹּ֑ה אִם־תֹּאכַ֨לְנָה נָשִׁ֤ים פִּרְיָם֙ עֹלֲלֵ֣י טִפֻּחִ֔ים אִם־יֵהָרֵ֛ג בְּמִקְדַּ֥שׁ אֲדֹנָ֖י כֹּהֵ֥ן וְנָבִֽיא׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): shshakeb֨u la'a֤retz chutzot֙ na֣'ar vezaqe֔n bּetulota֥y ubachura֖y napel֣u becha֑reb hara֨getּa֙ bּey֣om 'apּe֔ka taba֖chetּa lo֥ chamaֽletּa׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)The young and the old lie on the ground in the streets: my virgins and my young men are fallen by the sword; You hast slain them in the day of Your anger; You hast killed, and not pitied.

שָׁכְב֨וּ לָאָ֤רֶץ חוּצוֹת֙ נַ֣עַר וְזָקֵ֔ן בְּתוּלֹתַ֥י וּבַחוּרַ֖י נָפְל֣וּ בֶחָ֑רֶב הָרַ֨גְתָּ֙ בְּי֣וֹם אַפֶּ֔ךָ טָבַ֖חְתָּ לֹ֥א חָמָֽלְתָּ׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): tּiqera'֩ key֨om mo'e֤d meguray֙ misּabi֔yb velo֥ haya֛h bּey֥om 'ap-yehva֖h pּali֣yt veshsari֑yd 'ashsher-tipּa֥chetּiy veribּi֖ytiy 'oyebi֥y kilּaֽm׃p

Edified Edition (EDE)You hast called as in a solemn day my terrors round about, so that in the day of the LORD's anger none escaped nor remained: those that I have swaddled and brought up has mine enemy consumed.

תִּקְרָא֩ כְי֨וֹם מוֹעֵ֤ד מְגוּרַי֙ מִסָּבִ֔יב וְלֹ֥א הָיָ֛ה בְּי֥וֹם אַף־יְהוָ֖ה פָּלִ֣יט וְשָׂרִ֑יד אֲשֶׁר־טִפַּ֥חְתִּי וְרִבִּ֖יתִי אֹיְבִ֥י כִלָּֽם׃פ
