Chapter 4

Phonetic (Hebrew): eykah֙ yu'a֣m zaha֔b yishshene֖ hakּe֣tem hatּ֑ob tּishshetּapּe֨kenah֙ 'abeney-qo֔deshsh bּero֖'shsh kּal-chutzֽot׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)How is the gold become dim! how is the most fine gold changed! the stones of the sanctuary are poured out in the top of every street.

אֵיכָה֙ יוּעַ֣ם זָהָ֔ב יִשְׁנֶ֖א הַכֶּ֣תֶם הַטּ֑וֹב תִּשְׁתַּפֵּ֨כְנָה֙ אַבְנֵי־קֹ֔דֶשׁ בְּרֹ֖אשׁ כָּל־חוּצֽוֹת׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): bּene֤y tziyּon֙ hayeqari֔ym hamesulּa'i֖ym bּapּa֑z 'eyka֤h necheshshebu֙ lenibeley-che֔reshs ma'ashse֖h yede֥y yotzeֽr׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)The precious sons of Zion, comparable to fine gold, how are they esteemed as earthen pitchers, the work of the hands of the potter!

בְּנֵ֤י צִיּוֹן֙ הַיְקָרִ֔ים הַמְסֻלָּאִ֖ים בַּפָּ֑ז אֵיכָ֤ה נֶחְשְׁבוּ֙ לְנִבְלֵי־חֶ֔רֶשׂ מַעֲשֵׂ֖ה יְדֵ֥י יוֹצֵֽר׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): gּam-tnyn tּanּiym֙ cha֣letzu shsha֔d heyni֖yqu gּureyhe֑n bּat-'amּi֣y le'akeza֔r ky 'nym kּaye'eni֖ym bּamּidebּaֽr׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)Even the sea monsters draw out the breast, they give suck to their young ones: the daughter of my people is become cruel, like the ostriches in the wilderness.

גַּם־תנין תַּנִּים֙ חָ֣לְצוּ שַׁ֔ד הֵינִ֖יקוּ גּוּרֵיהֶ֑ן בַּת־עַמִּ֣י לְאַכְזָ֔ר כי ענים כַּיְעֵנִ֖ים בַּמִּדְבָּֽר׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): dּaba֨q leshsh֥on yone֛q 'el-chkּ֖o bּatzּama֑ 'ֽolaliym֙ shsha֣'alu le֔chem pּore֖shs 'e֥yn laheֽm׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)The tongue of the sucking child cleaves to the roof of his mouth for thirst: the young children ask bread, and no man breaks it to them.

דָּבַ֨ק לְשׁ֥וֹן יוֹנֵ֛ק אֶל־חכּ֖וֹ בַּצָּמָ֑א עֽוֹלָלִים֙ שָׁ֣אֲלוּ לֶ֔חֶם פֹּרֵ֖שׂ אֵ֥ין לָהֶֽם׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): ha'oֽkeliym֙ lema֣'adanּi֔ym nashsha֖mּu bּachutz֑ot ha'emuniym֙ 'ale֣y tola֔ chibּeq֖u 'ashshepּatּֽot׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)They that did feed delicately are desolate in the streets: they that were brought up in scarlet embrace dunghills.

הָאֹֽכְלִים֙ לְמַ֣עֲדַנִּ֔ים נָשַׁ֖מּוּ בַּחוּצ֑וֹת הָאֱמֻנִים֙ עֲלֵ֣י תוֹלָ֔ע חִבְּק֖וּ אַשְׁפַּתּֽוֹת׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּigedּal֙ 'avo֣n bּat-'amּi֔y meֽchatּa֖'t sedo֑m haֽhapuka֣h kemo-ra֔ga velo'-cha֥lu ba֖hּ yadaֽyim׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)For the punishment of the iniquity of the daughter of my people is greater than the punishment of the sin of Sodom, that was overthrown as in a moment, and no hands stayed on her.

וַיִּגְדַּל֙ עֲוֺ֣ן בַּת־עַמִּ֔י מֵֽחַטַּ֖את סְדֹ֑ם הַֽהֲפוּכָ֣ה כְמוֹ־רָ֔גַע וְלֹא־חָ֥לוּ בָ֖הּ יָדָֽיִם׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): zakּ֤u neziyre֨yha֙ mishshּe֔leg tzach֖u mechala֑b 'a֤demu 'e֨tzem֙ mipּeniyni֔ym sapּi֖yr gּizerataֽm׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)Her Nazarites were purer than snow, they were whiter than milk, they were more ruddy in body than rubies, their polishing was of sapphire:

זַכּ֤וּ נְזִירֶ֨יהָ֙ מִשֶּׁ֔לֶג צַח֖וּ מֵחָלָ֑ב אָ֤דְמוּ עֶ֨צֶם֙ מִפְּנִינִ֔ים סַפִּ֖יר גִּזְרָתָֽם׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): chashsha֤ke mishshּechor֙ tּaֽ'ora֔m lo֥ nikּer֖u bּachutz֑ot tzapa֤d 'oram֙ 'al-'atzema֔m yabe֖shsh haya֥h ka'eֽtz׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)Their visage is blacker than a coal; they are not known in the streets: their skin cleaves to their bones; it is withered, it is become like a stick.

חָשַׁ֤ךְ מִשְּׁחוֹר֙ תָּֽאֳרָ֔ם לֹ֥א נִכְּר֖וּ בַּחוּצ֑וֹת צָפַ֤ד עוֹרָם֙ עַל־עַצְמָ֔ם יָבֵ֖שׁ הָיָ֥ה כָעֵֽץ׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): tobi֤ym hayu֙ chaleley-che֔reb meֽchalele֖y ra'a֑b shshe֣he֤m yaz֨ubu֙ meduqּari֔ym mitּenubo֖t shsadaֽy׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)They that be slain with the sword are better than they that be slain with hunger: for these pine away, stricken through for want of the fruits of the field.

טוֹבִ֤ים הָיוּ֙ חַלְלֵי־חֶ֔רֶב מֵֽחַלְלֵ֖י רָעָ֑ב שֶׁ֣הֵ֤ם יָז֨וּבוּ֙ מְדֻקָּרִ֔ים מִתְּנוּבֹ֖ת שָׂדָֽי׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): yede֗y nashshiym֙ rachama֣niyּ֔ot bּishshּel֖u yaledeyhe֑n hay֤u lebarot֙ la֔mo bּeshshe֖ber bּat-'amּiֽy׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)The hands of the pitiful women have sodden their own children: they were their meat in the destruction of the daughter of my people.

יְדֵ֗י נָשִׁים֙ רַחֲמָ֣נִיּ֔וֹת בִּשְּׁל֖וּ יַלְדֵיהֶ֑ן הָי֤וּ לְבָרוֹת֙ לָ֔מוֹ בְּשֶׁ֖בֶר בַּת־עַמִּֽי׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): kּilּa֤h yehvah֙ 'et-chamat֔o shshapa֖ke char֣on 'apּ֑o vayּatzּet-'e֣shsh bּetziyּ֔on vatּo֖'kal yesodoteֽyha׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)The LORD has accomplished His fury; He has poured out His fierce anger, and has kindled a fire in Zion, and it has devoured the foundations thereof.

כִּלָּ֤ה יְהוָה֙ אֶת־חֲמָת֔וֹ שָׁפַ֖ךְ חֲר֣וֹן אַפּ֑וֹ וַיַּצֶּת־אֵ֣שׁ בְּצִיּ֔וֹן וַתֹּ֖אכַל יְסוֹדֹתֶֽיהָ׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): lo֤ he'emi֨ynu֙ malekey-'e֔retz vkl kּo֖l yoshshebe֣y tebe֑l kּi֤y yabo'֙ tza֣r ve'oye֔b bּeshsha'are֖y yerushshalaiֽm׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)The kings of the earth, and all the inhabitants of the world, would not have believed that the adversary and the enemy should have entered into the gates of Jerusalem.

לֹ֤א הֶאֱמִ֨ינוּ֙ מַלְכֵי־אֶ֔רֶץ וכל כֹּ֖ל יֹשְׁבֵ֣י תֵבֵ֑ל כִּ֤י יָבֹא֙ צַ֣ר וְאוֹיֵ֔ב בְּשַׁעֲרֵ֖י יְרוּשָׁלִָֽם׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): meֽchatּo֣'t nebiy'e֔yha 'avon֖ot kּohane֑yha hashshּopeki֥ym bּeqirebּa֖hּ dּa֥m tzadּiyqiֽym׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)For the sins of her prophets, and the iniquities of her priests, that have shed the blood of the just in the midst of her,

מֵֽחַטֹּ֣את נְבִיאֶ֔יהָ עֲוֺנ֖וֹת כֹּהֲנֶ֑יהָ הַשֹּׁפְכִ֥ים בְּקִרְבָּ֖הּ דַּ֥ם צַדִּיקִֽים׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): na'֤u 'iveriym֙ bּaֽchutz֔ot negoֽ'al֖u bּadּa֑m bּelo֣ yֽukel֔u yigּe'֖u bּilebushsheyheֽm׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)They have wandered as blind men in the streets, they have polluted themselves with blood, so that men could not touch their garments.

נָע֤וּ עִוְרִים֙ בַּֽחוּצ֔וֹת נְגֹֽאֲל֖וּ בַּדָּ֑ם בְּלֹ֣א יֽוּכְל֔וּ יִגְּע֖וּ בִּלְבֻשֵׁיהֶֽם׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): s֣uru tame֞ qa֣re'u la֗mo s֤uru s֨uru֙ 'al-tּigּa֔'u kּi֥y natz֖u gּam-na֑'u 'aֽmeru֙ bּagּoyi֔m lo֥ yosi֖ypu lagֽur׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)They cried to them, "Depart you; it is unclean; depart, depart, touch not:" when they fled away and wandered, they said among the heathen, "They shall no more sojourn there."

ס֣וּרוּ טָמֵ֞א קָ֣רְאוּ לָ֗מוֹ ס֤וּרוּ ס֨וּרוּ֙ אַל־תִּגָּ֔עוּ כִּ֥י נָצ֖וּ גַּם־נָ֑עוּ אָֽמְרוּ֙ בַּגּוֹיִ֔ם לֹ֥א יוֹסִ֖יפוּ לָגֽוּר׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): pּene֤y yehvah֙ chilּeqa֔m lo֥ yosi֖yp lehabּiyta֑m pּene֤y kohaniym֙ lo֣ nashsa֔'u zqnym uzeqeni֖ym lo֥ chanaֽnu׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)The anger of the LORD has divided them; He will no more regard them: they respected not the persons of the priests, they favoured not the elders.

פְּנֵ֤י יְהוָה֙ חִלְּקָ֔ם לֹ֥א יוֹסִ֖יף לְהַבִּיטָ֑ם פְּנֵ֤י כֹהֲנִים֙ לֹ֣א נָשָׂ֔אוּ זקנים וּזְקֵנִ֖ים לֹ֥א חָנָֽנוּ׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): vdynh 'ode֨ynu֙ tּikele֣ynah 'eyne֔ynu 'el-'ezerate֖nu ha֑bel bּetzipּiyּate֣nu tzipּi֔ynu 'el-gּ֖oy lo֥ yoshshiֽ'a׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)As for us, our eyes as yet failed for our vain help: in our watching we have watched for a nation that could not save us.

עודינה עוֹדֵ֨ינוּ֙ תִּכְלֶ֣ינָה עֵינֵ֔ינוּ אֶל־עֶזְרָתֵ֖נוּ הָ֑בֶל בְּצִפִּיָּתֵ֣נוּ צִפִּ֔ינוּ אֶל־גּ֖וֹי לֹ֥א יוֹשִֽׁעַ׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): tzad֣u tze'ade֔ynu milּe֖ket bּirechobote֑ynu qara֥b qitzּe֛ynu male'֥u yame֖ynu kּiy-ba֥ qitzּeֽynu׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)They hunt our steps, that we cannot go in our streets: our end is near, our days are fulfilled; for our end is come.

צָד֣וּ צְעָדֵ֔ינוּ מִלֶּ֖כֶת בִּרְחֹבֹתֵ֑ינוּ קָרַ֥ב קִצֵּ֛ינוּ מָלְא֥וּ יָמֵ֖ינוּ כִּי־בָ֥א קִצֵּֽינוּ׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): qalּi֤ym hayu֙ rodepe֔ynu minּishshere֖y shshama֑yim 'al-hehari֣ym dּelaqu֔nu bּamּidebּa֖r 'a֥rebu laֽnu׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)Our persecutors are swifter than the eagles of the heaven: they pursued us upon the mountains, they laid wait for us in the wilderness.

קַלִּ֤ים הָיוּ֙ רֹדְפֵ֔ינוּ מִנִּשְׁרֵ֖י שָׁמָ֑יִם עַל־הֶהָרִ֣ים דְּלָקֻ֔נוּ בַּמִּדְבָּ֖ר אָ֥רְבוּ לָֽנוּ׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): r֤ucha 'apּe֨ynu֙ meshshi֣ycha yehva֔h nilekּa֖d bּishshechiytota֑m 'ashshe֣r 'ama֔renu bּetzilּ֖o niֽcheye֥h bagּoyiֽm׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)The breath of our nostrils, the anointed of the LORD, was taken in their pits, of whom we said, "Under his shadow we shall live among the heathen."

ר֤וּחַ אַפֵּ֨ינוּ֙ מְשִׁ֣יחַ יְהוָ֔ה נִלְכַּ֖ד בִּשְׁחִיתוֹתָ֑ם אֲשֶׁ֣ר אָמַ֔רְנוּ בְּצִלּ֖וֹ נִֽחְיֶ֥ה בַגּוֹיִֽם׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): shsi֤yshsiy veshsimechiy֙ bּat-'ed֔om yvshbty yoshshe֖bet bּe'e֣retz '֑utz gּam-'ala֨yike֙ tּa'abar-kּ֔os tּishshekּeri֖y vetite'ariֽy׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)Rejoice and be glad, O daughter of Edom, that dwellest in the land of Uz; the cup also shall pass through to you: you shall be drunken, and shall make yourself naked.

שִׂ֤ישִׂי וְשִׂמְחִי֙ בַּת־אֱד֔וֹם יושבתי יוֹשֶׁ֖בֶת בְּאֶ֣רֶץ ע֑וּץ גַּם־עָלַ֨יִךְ֙ תַּעֲבָר־כּ֔וֹס תִּשְׁכְּרִ֖י וְתִתְעָרִֽי׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): tּam-'avoneke֙ bּat-tziyּ֔on lo֥ yosi֖yp lehagelote֑ke pּaqa֤d 'avoneke֙ bּat-'ed֔om gּilּa֖h 'al-chatּo'taֽyike׃p

Edified Edition (EDE)The punishment of your iniquity is accomplished, O daughter of Zion; He will no more carry you away into captivity: He will visit your iniquity, O daughter of Edom; He will discover your sins.

תַּם־עֲוֺנֵךְ֙ בַּת־צִיּ֔וֹן לֹ֥א יוֹסִ֖יף לְהַגְלוֹתֵ֑ךְ פָּקַ֤ד עֲוֺנֵךְ֙ בַּת־אֱד֔וֹם גִּלָּ֖ה עַל־חַטֹּאתָֽיִךְ׃פ
