Chapter 11

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayedabּe֧r yehva֛h 'el-moshshe֥h ve'eֽl-'aharo֖n le'mo֥r 'aleheֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The LORD said to Moses and Aaron,

וַיְדַבֵּ֧ר יְהוָ֛ה אֶל־מֹשֶׁ֥ה וְאֶֽל־אַהֲרֹ֖ן לֵאמֹ֥ר אֲלֵהֶֽם׃

2
Phonetic (Hebrew): dּabּer֛u 'el-bּene֥y yishsera'e֖l le'mo֑r zo֤'t haֽchayּah֙ 'ashshe֣r tּo'kel֔u mikּal-habּehema֖h 'ashshe֥r 'al-ha'aֽretz׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"Say to the Israelites: ‘Of all the animals that live on land, these are the ones you may eat:

דַּבְּר֛וּ אֶל־בְּנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל לֵאמֹ֑ר זֹ֤את הַֽחַיָּה֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר תֹּאכְל֔וּ מִכָּל־הַבְּהֵמָ֖ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר עַל־הָאָֽרֶץ׃

3
Phonetic (Hebrew): kּo֣l ׀ mapere֣set pּaresa֗h veshshosa֤'at shshe֨sa'֙ pּeraso֔t ma'ala֥t gּera֖h bּabּehema֑h 'ota֖hּ tּo'keֽlu׃
Edified Edition (EDE)You may eat any animal that has a divided hoof and that chews the cud.

כֹּ֣ל ׀ מַפְרֶ֣סֶת פַּרְסָ֗ה וְשֹׁסַ֤עַת שֶׁ֨סַע֙ פְּרָסֹ֔ת מַעֲלַ֥ת גֵּרָ֖ה בַּבְּהֵמָ֑ה אֹתָ֖הּ תֹּאכֵֽלוּ׃

4
Phonetic (Hebrew): a֤ke 'et-zeh֙ lo֣ toֽ'kel֔u miֽmּa'aley֙ hagּera֔h umimּaperiyse֖y hapּaresa֑h 'eֽt-ha֠gּamal kּiֽy-ma'ale֨h gera֜h h֗u uparesah֙ 'eyne֣nּu maperi֔ys tame֥ h֖u lakeֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)‘There are some that only chew the cud or only have a divided hoof, but you must not eat them. The camel chews the cud but does not have a divided hoof; it is ceremonially unclean for you.

אַ֤ךְ אֶת־זֶה֙ לֹ֣א תֹֽאכְל֔וּ מִֽמַּעֲלֵי֙ הַגֵּרָ֔ה וּמִמַּפְרִיסֵ֖י הַפַּרְסָ֑ה אֶֽת־הַ֠גָּמָל כִּֽי־מַעֲלֵ֨ה גֵרָ֜ה ה֗וּא וּפַרְסָה֙ אֵינֶ֣נּוּ מַפְרִ֔יס טָמֵ֥א ה֖וּא לָכֶֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'et-hashshּapa֗n kּiֽy-ma'ale֤h gerah֙ h֔u uparesa֖h lo֣ yaperi֑ys tame֥ h֖u lakeֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The hyrax chews the cud but does not have a divided hoof; it is unclean for you.

וְאֶת־הַשָּׁפָ֗ן כִּֽי־מַעֲלֵ֤ה גֵרָה֙ ה֔וּא וּפַרְסָ֖ה לֹ֣א יַפְרִ֑יס טָמֵ֥א ה֖וּא לָכֶֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'et-ha'arene֗bet kּiֽy-ma'ala֤t gּerah֙ hi֔v uparesa֖h lo֣ hiperi֑ysah teme'a֥h hi֖v lakeֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The rabbit chews the cud but does not have a divided hoof; it is unclean for you.

וְאֶת־הָאַרְנֶ֗בֶת כִּֽי־מַעֲלַ֤ת גֵּרָה֙ הִ֔וא וּפַרְסָ֖ה לֹ֣א הִפְרִ֑יסָה טְמֵאָ֥ה הִ֖וא לָכֶֽם׃

7
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'et-ha֠chaziyr kּiֽy-maperi֨ys pּaresa֜h h֗u veshshosa֥ shshe֨sa'֙ pּaresa֔h veh֖u gּera֣h loֽ'-yigּa֑r tame֥ h֖u lakeֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)And the pig, though it has a divided hoof, does not chew the cud; it is unclean for you.

וְאֶת־הַ֠חֲזִיר כִּֽי־מַפְרִ֨יס פַּרְסָ֜ה ה֗וּא וְשֹׁסַ֥ע שֶׁ֨סַע֙ פַּרְסָ֔ה וְה֖וּא גֵּרָ֣ה לֹֽא־יִגָּ֑ר טָמֵ֥א ה֖וּא לָכֶֽם׃

8
Phonetic (Hebrew): mibּeshsaram֙ lo֣ to'ke֔lu ubenibelata֖m lo֣ tigּa֑'u teme'i֥ym he֖m lakeֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)You must not eat their meat or touch their carcasses; they are unclean for you.

מִבְּשָׂרָם֙ לֹ֣א תֹאכֵ֔לוּ וּבְנִבְלָתָ֖ם לֹ֣א תִגָּ֑עוּ טְמֵאִ֥ים הֵ֖ם לָכֶֽם׃

9
Phonetic (Hebrew): et-zeh֙ tּoֽ'kel֔u mikּo֖l 'ashshe֣r bּamּa֑yim kּo֣l 'ashsher-lo֩ senapּi֨yr veqashseqe֜shset bּamּa֗yim bּayּamּi֛ym ubanּechali֖ym 'ota֥m tּo'keֽlu׃
Edified Edition (EDE)‘Of all the creatures living in the water of the seas and the streams, you may eat any that have both fins and scales.

אֶת־זֶה֙ תֹּֽאכְל֔וּ מִכֹּ֖ל אֲשֶׁ֣ר בַּמָּ֑יִם כֹּ֣ל אֲשֶׁר־לוֹ֩ סְנַפִּ֨יר וְקַשְׂקֶ֜שֶׂת בַּמַּ֗יִם בַּיַּמִּ֛ים וּבַנְּחָלִ֖ים אֹתָ֥ם תֹּאכֵֽלוּ׃

10
Phonetic (Hebrew): vekol֩ 'ashshe֨r 'eֽyn-l֜o senapּi֣yr veqashseqe֗shset bּayּamּiym֙ ubanּechali֔ym mikּol֙ shshe֣retz hamּa֔yim umikּo֛l ne֥peshsh hachayּa֖h 'ashshe֣r bּamּa֑yim shshe֥qetz he֖m lakeֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)But all creatures in the seas or streams that do not have fins and scales, whether among all the swarming things or among all the other living creatures in the water, you are to regard as detestable.

וְכֹל֩ אֲשֶׁ֨ר אֵֽין־ל֜וֹ סְנַפִּ֣יר וְקַשְׂקֶ֗שֶׂת בַּיַּמִּים֙ וּבַנְּחָלִ֔ים מִכֹּל֙ שֶׁ֣רֶץ הַמַּ֔יִם וּמִכֹּ֛ל נֶ֥פֶשׁ הַחַיָּ֖ה אֲשֶׁ֣ר בַּמָּ֑יִם שֶׁ֥קֶץ הֵ֖ם לָכֶֽם׃

11
Phonetic (Hebrew): veshshe֖qetz yihey֣u lake֑m mibּeshsaram֙ lo֣ to'ke֔lu ve'et-nibelata֖m tּeshshaqּeֽtzu׃
Edified Edition (EDE)And since you are to regard them as detestable, you must not eat their meat and you must regard their carcasses as detestable.

וְשֶׁ֖קֶץ יִהְי֣וּ לָכֶ֑ם מִבְּשָׂרָם֙ לֹ֣א תֹאכֵ֔לוּ וְאֶת־נִבְלָתָ֖ם תְּשַׁקֵּֽצוּ׃

12
Phonetic (Hebrew): kּo֣l 'ashshe֥r 'eֽyn-l֛o senapּi֥yr veqashseqe֖shset bּamּa֑yim shshe֥qetz h֖u lakeֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Anything living in the water that does not have fins and scales is to be detestable to you.

כֹּ֣ל אֲשֶׁ֥ר אֵֽין־ל֛וֹ סְנַפִּ֥יר וְקַשְׂקֶ֖שֶׂת בַּמָּ֑יִם שֶׁ֥קֶץ ה֖וּא לָכֶֽם׃

13
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'et-'e֨lּeh֙ tּeshshaqּetz֣u min-ha'֔op lo֥ ye'akel֖u shshe֣qetz he֑m 'et-hanּe֨shsher֙ ve'et-hapּe֔res ve'e֖t ha'azeniyּaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)‘These are the birds you are to regard as detestable and not eat because they are detestable: the eagle, the vulture, the black vulture,

וְאֶת־אֵ֨לֶּה֙ תְּשַׁקְּצ֣וּ מִן־הָע֔וֹף לֹ֥א יֵאָכְל֖וּ שֶׁ֣קֶץ הֵ֑ם אֶת־הַנֶּ֨שֶׁר֙ וְאֶת־הַפֶּ֔רֶס וְאֵ֖ת הָעָזְנִיָּֽה׃

14
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'et-ha֨dּa'a֔h ve'et-ha'ayּa֖h lemiynaֽhּ׃
Edified Edition (EDE)the red kite, any kind of black kite,

וְאֶת־הַ֨דָּאָ֔ה וְאֶת־הָאַיָּ֖ה לְמִינָֽהּ׃

15
Phonetic (Hebrew): e֥t kּal-'ore֖b lemiynֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)any kind of raven,

אֵ֥ת כָּל־עֹרֵ֖ב לְמִינֽוֹ׃

16
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'et֙ bּa֣t haֽyּa'ana֔h ve'et-hatּachema֖s ve'et-hashshּa֑chap ve'et-hanּe֖tz lemiyneֽhu׃
Edified Edition (EDE)the horned owl, the screech owl, the gull, any kind of hawk,

וְאֵת֙ בַּ֣ת הַֽיַּעֲנָ֔ה וְאֶת־הַתַּחְמָ֖ס וְאֶת־הַשָּׁ֑חַף וְאֶת־הַנֵּ֖ץ לְמִינֵֽהוּ׃

17
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'et-hakּ֥os ve'et-hashshּala֖ke ve'et-hayּaneshshֽup׃
Edified Edition (EDE)the little owl, the cormorant, the great owl,

וְאֶת־הַכּ֥וֹס וְאֶת־הַשָּׁלָ֖ךְ וְאֶת־הַיַּנְשֽׁוּף׃

18
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'et-hatּineshshe֥met ve'et-haqּa'a֖t ve'et-harachaֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)the white owl, the desert owl, the osprey,

וְאֶת־הַתִּנְשֶׁ֥מֶת וְאֶת־הַקָּאָ֖ת וְאֶת־הָרָחָֽם׃

19
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'et֙ hachasiyda֔h ha'anapa֖h lemiyna֑hּ ve'et-hadּukiypa֖t ve'et-ha'atalּeֽp׃
Edified Edition (EDE)the stork, any kind of heron, the hoopoe and the bat.

וְאֵת֙ הַחֲסִידָ֔ה הָאֲנָפָ֖ה לְמִינָ֑הּ וְאֶת־הַדּוּכִיפַ֖ת וְאֶת־הָעֲטַלֵּֽף׃

20
Phonetic (Hebrew): kּo֚l shshe֣retz ha'֔op hahole֖ke 'al-'arebּa֑ shshe֥qetz h֖u lakeֽm׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)‘All flying insects that walk on all fours are to be detestable to you.

כֹּ֚ל שֶׁ֣רֶץ הָע֔וֹף הַהֹלֵ֖ךְ עַל־אַרְבַּ֑ע שֶׁ֥קֶץ ה֖וּא לָכֶֽם׃ס

21
Phonetic (Hebrew): a֤ke 'et-zeh֙ tּoֽ'kel֔u mikּol֙ shshe֣retz ha'֔op hahole֖ke 'al-'arebּa֑ 'ashsher-l l֤o kera'a֨yim֙ mimּa֣'al leragela֔yv lenatּe֥r bּahe֖n 'al-ha'aֽretz׃
Edified Edition (EDE)There are, however, some flying insects that walk on all fours that you may eat: those that have jointed legs for hopping on the ground.

אַ֤ךְ אֶת־זֶה֙ תֹּֽאכְל֔וּ מִכֹּל֙ שֶׁ֣רֶץ הָע֔וֹף הַהֹלֵ֖ךְ עַל־אַרְבַּ֑ע אֲשֶׁר־לא ל֤וֹ כְרָעַ֨יִם֙ מִמַּ֣עַל לְרַגְלָ֔יו לְנַתֵּ֥ר בָּהֵ֖ן עַל־הָאָֽרֶץ׃

22
Phonetic (Hebrew): et-'e֤lּeh mehem֙ tּo'ke֔lu 'et-hֽa'arebּe֣h lemiyn֔o ve'et-hasּale'a֖m lemiyne֑hu ve'et-hacharegּo֣l lemiyne֔hu ve'et-hechaga֖b lemiyneֽhu׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Of these you may eat any kind of locust, katydid, cricket or grasshopper.

אֶת־אֵ֤לֶּה מֵהֶם֙ תֹּאכֵ֔לוּ אֶת־הָֽאַרְבֶּ֣ה לְמִינ֔וֹ וְאֶת־הַסָּלְעָ֖ם לְמִינֵ֑הוּ וְאֶת־הַחַרְגֹּ֣ל לְמִינֵ֔הוּ וְאֶת־הֶחָגָ֖ב לְמִינֵֽהוּ׃

23
Phonetic (Hebrew): vekol֙ shshe֣retz ha'֔op 'ashsher-l֖o 'arebּa֣ ragela֑yim shshe֥qetz h֖u lakeֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)But all other flying insects that have four legs you are to regard as detestable.

וְכֹל֙ שֶׁ֣רֶץ הָע֔וֹף אֲשֶׁר־ל֖וֹ אַרְבַּ֣ע רַגְלָ֑יִם שֶׁ֥קֶץ ה֖וּא לָכֶֽם׃

24
Phonetic (Hebrew): ule'e֖lּeh tּitּamּa֑'u kּal-hanּoge֥'a bּenibelata֖m yitema֥ 'ad-ha'aֽreb׃
Edified Edition (EDE)‘You will make yourselves unclean by these; whoever touches their carcasses will be unclean till evening.

וּלְאֵ֖לֶּה תִּטַּמָּ֑אוּ כָּל־הַנֹּגֵ֥עַ בְּנִבְלָתָ֖ם יִטְמָ֥א עַד־הָעָֽרֶב׃

25
Phonetic (Hebrew): vekal-hanּoshse֖ minּibelata֑m yekabּe֥s bּegada֖yv vetame֥ 'ad-ha'aֽreb׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Whoever picks up one of their carcasses must wash their clothes, and they will be unclean till evening.

וְכָל־הַנֹּשֵׂ֖א מִנִּבְלָתָ֑ם יְכַבֵּ֥ס בְּגָדָ֖יו וְטָמֵ֥א עַד־הָעָֽרֶב׃

26
Phonetic (Hebrew): leֽkal-habּehema֡h 'ashshe֣r hiv'֩ mapere֨set pּaresa֜h veshshe֣sa ׀ 'eyne֣nּah shshosa֗'at vegerah֙ 'eyne֣nּah ma'ala֔h teme'i֥ym he֖m lake֑m kּal-hanּoge֥'a bּahe֖m yitemaֽ'׃
Edified Edition (EDE)‘Every animal that does not have a divided hoof or that does not chew the cud is unclean for you; whoever touches the carcass of any of them will be unclean.

לְֽכָל־הַבְּהֵמָ֡ה אֲשֶׁ֣ר הִוא֩ מַפְרֶ֨סֶת פַּרְסָ֜ה וְשֶׁ֣סַע ׀ אֵינֶ֣נָּה שֹׁסַ֗עַת וְגֵרָה֙ אֵינֶ֣נָּה מַעֲלָ֔ה טְמֵאִ֥ים הֵ֖ם לָכֶ֑ם כָּל־הַנֹּגֵ֥עַ בָּהֶ֖ם יִטְמָֽא׃

27
Phonetic (Hebrew): veko֣l ׀ hole֣ke 'al-kּapּa֗yv bּekal-haֽchayּah֙ hahole֣ket 'al-'arebּa֔ teme'i֥ym he֖m lake֑m kּal-hanּoge֥'a bּenibelata֖m yitema֥ 'ad-ha'aֽreb׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Of all the animals that walk on all fours, those that walk on their paws are unclean for you; whoever touches their carcasses will be unclean till evening.

וְכֹ֣ל ׀ הוֹלֵ֣ךְ עַל־כַּפָּ֗יו בְּכָל־הַֽחַיָּה֙ הַהֹלֶ֣כֶת עַל־אַרְבַּ֔ע טְמֵאִ֥ים הֵ֖ם לָכֶ֑ם כָּל־הַנֹּגֵ֥עַ בְּנִבְלָתָ֖ם יִטְמָ֥א עַד־הָעָֽרֶב׃

28
Phonetic (Hebrew): vehanּoshse'֙ 'et-nibelata֔m yekabּe֥s bּegada֖yv vetame֣ 'ad-ha'a֑reb teme'i֥ym he֖mּah lakeֽm׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)Anyone who picks up their carcasses must wash their clothes, and they will be unclean till evening. These animals are unclean for you.

וְהַנֹּשֵׂא֙ אֶת־נִבְלָתָ֔ם יְכַבֵּ֥ס בְּגָדָ֖יו וְטָמֵ֣א עַד־הָעָ֑רֶב טְמֵאִ֥ים הֵ֖מָּה לָכֶֽם׃ס

29
Phonetic (Hebrew): veze֤h lakem֙ hatּame֔ bּashshּe֖retz hashshּore֣tz 'al-ha'a֑retz hacho֥led veha'akebּa֖r vehatzּa֥b lemiyneֽhu׃
Edified Edition (EDE)‘Of the animals that move along the ground, these are unclean for you: the weasel, the rat, any kind of great lizard,

וְזֶ֤ה לָכֶם֙ הַטָּמֵ֔א בַּשֶּׁ֖רֶץ הַשֹּׁרֵ֣ץ עַל־הָאָ֑רֶץ הַחֹ֥לֶד וְהָעַכְבָּ֖ר וְהַצָּ֥ב לְמִינֵֽהוּ׃

30
Phonetic (Hebrew): veha'anaqa֥h vehakּo֖cha vehalּeta'a֑h vehacho֖met vehatּineshshaֽmet׃
Edified Edition (EDE)the gecko, the monitor lizard, the wall lizard, the skink and the chameleon.

וְהָאֲנָקָ֥ה וְהַכֹּ֖חַ וְהַלְּטָאָ֑ה וְהַחֹ֖מֶט וְהַתִּנְשָֽׁמֶת׃

31
Phonetic (Hebrew): e֛lּeh hatּeme'i֥ym lake֖m bּekal-hashshּa֑retz kּal-hanּoge֧'a bּahe֛m bּemota֖m yitema֥ 'ad-ha'aֽreb׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Of all those that move along the ground, these are unclean for you. Whoever touches them when they are dead will be unclean till evening.

אֵ֛לֶּה הַטְּמֵאִ֥ים לָכֶ֖ם בְּכָל־הַשָּׁ֑רֶץ כָּל־הַנֹּגֵ֧עַ בָּהֶ֛ם בְּמֹתָ֖ם יִטְמָ֥א עַד־הָעָֽרֶב׃

32
Phonetic (Hebrew): veko֣l 'ashsher-yipּol-'alayv֩ mehe֨m ׀ bּemota֜m yitema֗ mikּal-kּeliy-'etz֙ '֣o be֤ged 'o-'or֙ '֣o shsa֔q kּal-kּeli֕y 'ashsher-ye'ashse֥h mela'ka֖h bּahe֑m bּamּa֧yim yuba֛ vetame֥ 'ad-ha'e֖reb vetaheֽr׃
Edified Edition (EDE)When one of them dies and falls on something, that object, whatever its use, will be unclean, whether it is made of wood, cloth, hide or sackcloth. Put it into water; it will be unclean till evening, and then it will be clean.

וְכֹ֣ל אֲשֶׁר־יִפֹּל־עָלָיו֩ מֵהֶ֨ם ׀ בְּמֹתָ֜ם יִטְמָ֗א מִכָּל־כְּלִי־עֵץ֙ א֣וֹ בֶ֤גֶד אוֹ־עוֹר֙ א֣וֹ שָׂ֔ק כָּל־כְּלִ֕י אֲשֶׁר־יֵעָשֶׂ֥ה מְלָאכָ֖ה בָּהֶ֑ם בַּמַּ֧יִם יוּבָ֛א וְטָמֵ֥א עַד־הָעֶ֖רֶב וְטָהֵֽר׃

33
Phonetic (Hebrew): vekal-kּeliy-che֔reshs 'ashsher-yipּo֥l mehe֖m 'el-tּok֑o kּo֣l 'ashshe֧r bּetok֛o yitema֖ ve'ot֥o tishshebּoֽru׃
Edified Edition (EDE)If one of them falls into a clay pot, everything in it will be unclean, and you must break the pot.

וְכָל־כְּלִי־חֶ֔רֶשׂ אֲשֶׁר־יִפֹּ֥ל מֵהֶ֖ם אֶל־תּוֹכ֑וֹ כֹּ֣ל אֲשֶׁ֧ר בְּתוֹכ֛וֹ יִטְמָ֖א וְאֹת֥וֹ תִשְׁבֹּֽרוּ׃

34
Phonetic (Hebrew): mikּal-ha'o֜kel 'ashshe֣r ye'ake֗l 'ashshe֨r yab֥o 'ala֛yv ma֖yim yitema֑ vekal-mashsheqeh֙ 'ashshe֣r yishshּate֔h bּekal-kּeli֖y yitemaֽ'׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Any food that could be eaten but has water on it from such a pot is unclean, and any liquid that could be drunk from it is unclean.

מִכָּל־הָאֹ֜כֶל אֲשֶׁ֣ר יֵאָכֵ֗ל אֲשֶׁ֨ר יָב֥וֹא עָלָ֛יו מַ֖יִם יִטְמָ֑א וְכָל־מַשְׁקֶה֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר יִשָּׁתֶ֔ה בְּכָל־כְּלִ֖י יִטְמָֽא׃

35
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve֠kol 'ashsher-yipּo֨l minּibelata֥m ׀ 'alayv֮ yitema'֒ tּanּ֧ur vekiyra֛yim yutּa֖tz teme'i֣ym he֑m uteme'i֖ym yihey֥u lakeֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Anything that one of their carcasses falls on becomes unclean; an oven or cooking pot must be broken up. They are unclean, and you are to regard them as unclean.

וְ֠כֹל אֲשֶׁר־יִפֹּ֨ל מִנִּבְלָתָ֥ם ׀ עָלָיו֮ יִטְמָא֒ תַּנּ֧וּר וְכִירַ֛יִם יֻתָּ֖ץ טְמֵאִ֣ים הֵ֑ם וּטְמֵאִ֖ים יִהְי֥וּ לָכֶֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): a֣ke ma'eya֥n ub֛or miqeveh-ma֖yim yiheye֣h tah֑or venoge֥'a bּenibelata֖m yitemaֽ'׃
Edified Edition (EDE)A spring, however, or a cistern for collecting water remains clean, but anyone who touches one of these carcasses is unclean.

אַ֣ךְ מַעְיָ֥ן וּב֛וֹר מִקְוֵה־מַ֖יִם יִהְיֶ֣ה טָה֑וֹר וְנֹגֵ֥עַ בְּנִבְלָתָ֖ם יִטְמָֽא׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): veki֤y yipּol֙ minּibelata֔m 'al-kּal-ze֥ra zer֖u'a 'ashshe֣r yizּare֑'a tah֖or hֽu'׃
Edified Edition (EDE)If a carcass falls on any seeds that are to be planted, they remain clean.

וְכִ֤י יִפֹּל֙ מִנִּבְלָתָ֔ם עַל־כָּל־זֶ֥רַע זֵר֖וּעַ אֲשֶׁ֣ר יִזָּרֵ֑עַ טָה֖וֹר הֽוּא׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): veki֤y yutּan-ma֨yim֙ 'al-ze֔ra venapa֥l minּibelata֖m 'ala֑yv tame֥ h֖u lakeֽm׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)But if water has been put on the seed and a carcass falls on it, it is unclean for you.

וְכִ֤י יֻתַּן־מַ֨יִם֙ עַל־זֶ֔רַע וְנָפַ֥ל מִנִּבְלָתָ֖ם עָלָ֑יו טָמֵ֥א ה֖וּא לָכֶֽם׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): veki֤y yamut֙ min-habּehema֔h 'ashsher-hi֥y lake֖m le'akela֑h hanּoge֥'a bּenibelata֖hּ yitema֥ 'ad-ha'aֽreb׃
Edified Edition (EDE)‘If an animal that you are allowed to eat dies, anyone who touches its carcass will be unclean till evening.

וְכִ֤י יָמוּת֙ מִן־הַבְּהֵמָ֔ה אֲשֶׁר־הִ֥יא לָכֶ֖ם לְאָכְלָ֑ה הַנֹּגֵ֥עַ בְּנִבְלָתָ֖הּ יִטְמָ֥א עַד־הָעָֽרֶב׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vehaֽ'okel֙ minּibelata֔hּ yekabּe֥s bּegada֖yv vetame֣ 'ad-ha'a֑reb vehanּoshse'֙ 'et-nibelata֔hּ yekabּe֥s bּegada֖yv vetame֥ 'ad-ha'aֽreb׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Anyone who eats some of its carcass must wash their clothes, and they will be unclean till evening. Anyone who picks up the carcass must wash their clothes, and they will be unclean till evening.

וְהָֽאֹכֵל֙ מִנִּבְלָתָ֔הּ יְכַבֵּ֥ס בְּגָדָ֖יו וְטָמֵ֣א עַד־הָעָ֑רֶב וְהַנֹּשֵׂא֙ אֶת־נִבְלָתָ֔הּ יְכַבֵּ֥ס בְּגָדָ֖יו וְטָמֵ֥א עַד־הָעָֽרֶב׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vekal-hashshּe֖retz hashshּore֣tz 'al-ha'a֑retz shshe֥qetz h֖u lo֥ ye'akeֽl׃
Edified Edition (EDE)‘Every creature that moves along the ground is detestable; it is not to be eaten.

וְכָל־הַשֶּׁ֖רֶץ הַשֹּׁרֵ֣ץ עַל־הָאָ֑רֶץ שֶׁ֥קֶץ ה֖וּא לֹ֥א יֵאָכֵֽל׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): kּol֩ hole֨ke 'al-gּach֜<seg type="x-large">o<seg>n veko֣l ׀ hole֣ke 'al-'arebּa֗ 'a֚d kּal-marebּe֣h ragela֔yim lekal-hashshּe֖retz hashshּore֣tz 'al-ha'a֑retz lo֥ to'kel֖um kּiy-shshe֥qetz heֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)You are not to eat any creature that moves along the ground, whether it moves on its belly or walks on all fours or on many feet; it is detestable.

כֹּל֩ הוֹלֵ֨ךְ עַל־גָּח֜<seg type="x-large">וֹ<seg>ן וְכֹ֣ל ׀ הוֹלֵ֣ךְ עַל־אַרְבַּ֗ע עַ֚ד כָּל־מַרְבֵּ֣ה רַגְלַ֔יִם לְכָל־הַשֶּׁ֖רֶץ הַשֹּׁרֵ֣ץ עַל־הָאָ֑רֶץ לֹ֥א תֹאכְל֖וּם כִּי־שֶׁ֥קֶץ הֵֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): al-tּeshshaqּetzu֙ 'et-napeshsho֣teyke֔m bּekal-hashshּe֖retz hashshּore֑tz velo֤ tiֽtּamּe'u֙ bּahe֔m venitemete֖m bּaֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Do not make yourselves detestable by any of these creatures. Do not make yourselves unclean by them or be defiled by them.

אַל־תְּשַׁקְּצוּ֙ אֶת־נַפְשֹׁ֣תֵיכֶ֔ם בְּכָל־הַשֶּׁ֖רֶץ הַשֹּׁרֵ֑ץ וְלֹ֤א תִֽטַּמְּאוּ֙ בָּהֶ֔ם וְנִטְמֵתֶ֖ם בָּֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): kּi֣y 'ani֣y yehvah֮ 'eloֽheykem֒ vehiteqadּishshetּem֙ viheyiyte֣m qedoshshi֔ym kּi֥y qad֖oshsh 'a֑niy velo֤ tetamּe'u֙ 'et-napeshsho֣teyke֔m bּekal-hashshּe֖retz harome֥shs 'al-ha'aֽretz׃
Edified Edition (EDE)I am the LORD your God; consecrate yourselves and be holy, because I am holy. Do not make yourselves unclean by any creature that moves along the ground.

כִּ֣י אֲנִ֣י יְהוָה֮ אֱלֹֽהֵיכֶם֒ וְהִתְקַדִּשְׁתֶּם֙ וִהְיִיתֶ֣ם קְדֹשִׁ֔ים כִּ֥י קָד֖וֹשׁ אָ֑נִי וְלֹ֤א תְטַמְּאוּ֙ אֶת־נַפְשֹׁ֣תֵיכֶ֔ם בְּכָל־הַשֶּׁ֖רֶץ הָרֹמֵ֥שׂ עַל־הָאָֽרֶץ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): kּi֣y ׀ 'ani֣y yehva֗h haֽmּa'ale֤h 'etekem֙ me'e֣retz mitzera֔yim liheyo֥t lake֖m le'lohi֑ym viheyiyte֣m qedoshshi֔ym kּi֥y qad֖oshsh 'aֽniy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)I am the LORD, who brought you up out of Egypt to be your God; therefore be holy, because I am holy.

כִּ֣י ׀ אֲנִ֣י יְהוָ֗ה הַֽמַּעֲלֶ֤ה אֶתְכֶם֙ מֵאֶ֣רֶץ מִצְרַ֔יִם לִהְיֹ֥ת לָכֶ֖ם לֵאלֹהִ֑ים וִהְיִיתֶ֣ם קְדֹשִׁ֔ים כִּ֥י קָד֖וֹשׁ אָֽנִי׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): zo֣'t tּora֤t habּehemah֙ veha'֔op vekol֙ ne֣peshsh haֽchayּa֔h harome֖shset bּamּa֑yim ulekal-ne֖peshsh hashshּore֥tzet 'al-ha'aֽretz׃
Edified Edition (EDE)‘These are the regulations concerning animals, birds, every living thing that moves in the water and every creature that moves along the ground.

זֹ֣את תּוֹרַ֤ת הַבְּהֵמָה֙ וְהָע֔וֹף וְכֹל֙ נֶ֣פֶשׁ הַֽחַיָּ֔ה הָרֹמֶ֖שֶׂת בַּמָּ֑יִם וּלְכָל־נֶ֖פֶשׁ הַשֹּׁרֶ֥צֶת עַל־הָאָֽרֶץ׃

47
Phonetic (Hebrew): lehabedּi֕yl bּe֥yn hatּame֖ ube֣yn hatּaho֑r ube֤yn haֽchayּah֙ haֽnּe'eke֔let ubeyn֙ haֽchayּa֔h 'ashshe֖r lo֥ te'akeֽl׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)You must distinguish between the unclean and the clean, between living creatures that may be eaten and those that may not be eaten.’

לְהַבְדִּ֕יל בֵּ֥ין הַטָּמֵ֖א וּבֵ֣ין הַטָּהֹ֑ר וּבֵ֤ין הַֽחַיָּה֙ הַֽנֶּאֱכֶ֔לֶת וּבֵין֙ הַֽחַיָּ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֖ר לֹ֥א תֵאָכֵֽל׃פ
