Chapter 12

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayedabּe֥r yehva֖h 'el-moshshe֥h lּe'moֽr׃

Edified Edition (EDE)The LORD said to Moses,

וַיְדַבֵּ֥ר יְהוָ֖ה אֶל־מֹשֶׁ֥ה לֵּאמֹֽר׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): dּabּe֞r 'el-bּene֤y yishsera'el֙ le'mo֔r 'ishshּah֙ kּi֣y tazeri֔y'a veyaleda֖h zaka֑r vetaֽme'ah֙ shshibe'a֣t yami֔ym kּiyme֛y nidּa֥t dּevota֖hּ tּitemaֽ'׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"Say to the Israelites: ‘A woman who becomes pregnant and gives birth to a son will be ceremonially unclean for seven days, just as she is during her monthly period.

דַּבֵּ֞ר אֶל־בְּנֵ֤י יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר אִשָּׁה֙ כִּ֣י תַזְרִ֔יעַ וְיָלְדָ֖ה זָכָ֑ר וְטָֽמְאָה֙ שִׁבְעַ֣ת יָמִ֔ים כִּימֵ֛י נִדַּ֥ת דְּוֺתָ֖הּ תִּטְמָֽא׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ubayּ֖om hashshּemiyni֑y yimּ֖ol bּeshsa֥r 'arelatֽo׃

Edified Edition (EDE)On the eighth day the boy is to be circumcised.

וּבַיּ֖וֹם הַשְּׁמִינִ֑י יִמּ֖וֹל בְּשַׂ֥ר עָרְלָתֽוֹ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ushsheloshshi֥ym yom֙ ushshelo֣shshet yami֔ym tּeshshe֖b bּideme֣y tahora֑h bּekal-qo֣deshsh loֽ'-tigּa֗ ve'el-hamּiqedּashsh֙ lo֣ tabo֔ 'ad-melo֖'t yeme֥y tahoraֽhּ׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Then the woman must wait thirty-three days to be purified from her bleeding. She must not touch anything sacred or go to the sanctuary until the days of her purification are over.

וּשְׁלֹשִׁ֥ים יוֹם֙ וּשְׁלֹ֣שֶׁת יָמִ֔ים תֵּשֵׁ֖ב בִּדְמֵ֣י טָהֳרָ֑ה בְּכָל־קֹ֣דֶשׁ לֹֽא־תִגָּ֗ע וְאֶל־הַמִּקְדָּשׁ֙ לֹ֣א תָבֹ֔א עַד־מְלֹ֖את יְמֵ֥י טָהֳרָֽהּ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'im-neqeba֣h tele֔d vetame'a֥h shshebu'a֖yim kּenidּata֑hּ veshshishshּi֥ym yom֙ veshshe֣shshet yami֔ym tּeshshe֖b 'al-dּeme֥y tahoraֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)If she gives birth to a daughter, for two weeks the woman will be unclean, as during her period. Then she must wait sixty-six days to be purified from her bleeding.

וְאִם־נְקֵבָ֣ה תֵלֵ֔ד וְטָמְאָ֥ה שְׁבֻעַ֖יִם כְּנִדָּתָ֑הּ וְשִׁשִּׁ֥ים יוֹם֙ וְשֵׁ֣שֶׁת יָמִ֔ים תֵּשֵׁ֖ב עַל־דְּמֵ֥י טָהֳרָֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ubimelo֣'t ׀ yeme֣y tahora֗hּ leben֮ '֣o lebat֒ tּabi֞y kּe֤beshs bּen-shshenato֙ le'ola֔h uben-yona֥h 'o-to֖r lechatּa֑'t 'el-pּe֥tach 'oֽhel-mo'e֖d 'el-hakּoheֽn׃

Edified Edition (EDE)‘When the days of her purification for a son or daughter are over, she is to bring to the priest at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting a year-old lamb for a burnt offering and a young pigeon or a turtledove for a sin offering.

וּבִמְלֹ֣את ׀ יְמֵ֣י טָהֳרָ֗הּ לְבֵן֮ א֣וֹ לְבַת֒ תָּבִ֞יא כֶּ֤בֶשׂ בֶּן־שְׁנָתוֹ֙ לְעֹלָ֔ה וּבֶן־יוֹנָ֥ה אוֹ־תֹ֖ר לְחַטָּ֑את אֶל־פֶּ֥תַח אֹֽהֶל־מוֹעֵ֖ד אֶל־הַכֹּהֵֽן׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vehiqeriyb֞o lipene֤y yehvah֙ vekipּe֣r 'ale֔yha vetahara֖h mimּeqo֣r dּame֑yha zo֤'t tּorat֙ hayּole֔det lazּaka֖r '֥o lanּeqebaֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)He shall offer them before the LORD to make atonement for her, and then she will be ceremonially clean from her flow of blood. ‘These are the regulations for the woman who gives birth to a boy or a girl.

וְהִקְרִיב֞וֹ לִפְנֵ֤י יְהוָה֙ וְכִפֶּ֣ר עָלֶ֔יהָ וְטָהֲרָ֖ה מִמְּקֹ֣ר דָּמֶ֑יהָ זֹ֤את תּוֹרַת֙ הַיֹּלֶ֔דֶת לַזָּכָ֖ר א֥וֹ לַנְּקֵבָֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'im-lo֨ timetza֣ yadahּ֮ dּe֣y shseh֒ velaqecha֣h shshetּeֽy-tori֗ym '֤o shsheney֙ bּene֣y yona֔h 'echa֥d le'ola֖h ve'echa֣d lechatּa֑'t vekipּe֥r 'ale֛yha hakּohe֖n vetaheֽrah׃p

Edified Edition (EDE)But if she cannot afford a lamb, she is to bring two turtledoves or two young pigeons, one for a burnt offering and the other for a sin offering. In this way the priest will make atonement for her, and she will be clean.’

וְאִם־לֹ֨א תִמְצָ֣א יָדָהּ֮ דֵּ֣י שֶׂה֒ וְלָקְחָ֣ה שְׁתֵּֽי־תֹרִ֗ים א֤וֹ שְׁנֵי֙ בְּנֵ֣י יוֹנָ֔ה אֶחָ֥ד לְעֹלָ֖ה וְאֶחָ֣ד לְחַטָּ֑את וְכִפֶּ֥ר עָלֶ֛יהָ הַכֹּהֵ֖ן וְטָהֵֽרָה׃פ
