Chapter 17

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayedabּe֥r yehva֖h 'el-moshshe֥h lּe'moֽr׃

Edified Edition (EDE)The LORD said to Moses,

וַיְדַבֵּ֥ר יְהוָ֖ה אֶל־מֹשֶׁ֥ה לֵּאמֹֽר׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): dּabּe֨r 'eֽl-'aharo֜n ve'el-bּana֗yv ve'el֙ kּal-bּene֣y yishsera'e֔l ve'amaretּa֖ 'aleyhe֑m ze֣h hadּaba֔r 'ashsher-tziua֥h yehva֖h le'moֽr׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"Speak to Aaron and his sons and to all the Israelites and say to them: ‘This is what the LORD has commanded:

דַּבֵּ֨ר אֶֽל־אַהֲרֹ֜ן וְאֶל־בָּנָ֗יו וְאֶל֙ כָּל־בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל וְאָמַרְתָּ֖ אֲלֵיהֶ֑ם זֶ֣ה הַדָּבָ֔ר אֲשֶׁר־צִוָּ֥ה יְהוָ֖ה לֵאמֹֽר׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): i֥yshsh 'iyshsh֙ mibּe֣yt yishsera'e֔l 'ashshe֨r yishshecha֜t shsh֥or 'o-ke֛shseb 'o-'e֖z bּaֽmּachane֑h '֚o 'ashshe֣r yishshecha֔t mich֖utz laֽmּachaneֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Any Israelite who sacrifices an ox, a lamb or a goat in the camp or outside of it

אִ֥ישׁ אִישׁ֙ מִבֵּ֣ית יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל אֲשֶׁ֨ר יִשְׁחַ֜ט שׁ֥וֹר אוֹ־כֶ֛שֶׂב אוֹ־עֵ֖ז בַּֽמַּחֲנֶ֑ה א֚וֹ אֲשֶׁ֣ר יִשְׁחַ֔ט מִח֖וּץ לַֽמַּחֲנֶֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'el-pּe֜tach 'o֣hel mo'ed֮ lo֣ hebiy'o֒ lehaqeri֤yb qarebּan֙ laֽyhva֔h lipene֖y mishshekּa֣n yehva֑h dּa֣m yechashshe֞b la'i֤yshsh hahu'֙ dּa֣m shshapa֔ke venikera֛t ha'i֥yshsh hah֖u miqּe֥reb 'amּֽo׃

Edified Edition (EDE)instead of bringing it to the entrance to the Tent of Meeting to present it as an offering to the LORD in front of the tabernacle of the LORD, that person shall be considered guilty of bloodshed; they have shed blood and must be cut off from their people.

וְאֶל־פֶּ֜תַח אֹ֣הֶל מוֹעֵד֮ לֹ֣א הֱבִיאוֹ֒ לְהַקְרִ֤יב קָרְבָּן֙ לַֽיהוָ֔ה לִפְנֵ֖י מִשְׁכַּ֣ן יְהוָ֑ה דָּ֣ם יֵחָשֵׁ֞ב לָאִ֤ישׁ הַהוּא֙ דָּ֣ם שָׁפָ֔ךְ וְנִכְרַ֛ת הָאִ֥ישׁ הַה֖וּא מִקֶּ֥רֶב עַמּֽוֹ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): lema'an֩ 'ashshe֨r yabi֜y'u bּene֣y yishsera'e֗l 'eֽt-zibecheyhem֮ 'ashshe֣r he֣m zobechiym֮ 'al-pּene֣y hashsּadeh֒ vֽehebiy'u֣m laֽyhva֗h 'el-pּe֛tach 'o֥hel mo'e֖d 'el-hakּohe֑n veza֨bech֜u zibeche֧y shshelami֛ym laֽyhva֖h 'otaֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)This is so that the Israelites will bring to the LORD the sacrifices they are now making in the open fields. They must bring them to the priest, that is, to the LORD, at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting and sacrifice them as peace offerings.

לְמַעַן֩ אֲשֶׁ֨ר יָבִ֜יאוּ בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל אֶֽת־זִבְחֵיהֶם֮ אֲשֶׁ֣ר הֵ֣ם זֹבְחִים֮ עַל־פְּנֵ֣י הַשָּׂדֶה֒ וֶֽהֱבִיאֻ֣ם לַֽיהוָ֗ה אֶל־פֶּ֛תַח אֹ֥הֶל מוֹעֵ֖ד אֶל־הַכֹּהֵ֑ן וְזָ֨בְח֜וּ זִבְחֵ֧י שְׁלָמִ֛ים לַֽיהוָ֖ה אוֹתָֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vezara֨q hakּohe֤n 'et-hadּam֙ 'al-mizebּa֣ch yehva֔h pּe֖tach 'o֣hel mo'e֑d vehiqeti֣yr hache֔leb lere֥ycha niycho֖cha layhvaֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)The priest shall splash the blood against the altar of the LORD at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting and burn the fat as a pleasing aroma to the LORD.

וְזָרַ֨ק הַכֹּהֵ֤ן אֶת־הַדָּם֙ עַל־מִזְבַּ֣ח יְהוָ֔ה פֶּ֖תַח אֹ֣הֶל מוֹעֵ֑ד וְהִקְטִ֣יר הַחֵ֔לֶב לְרֵ֥יחַ נִיחֹ֖חַ לַיהוָֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): velo'-yizebּech֥u 'od֙ 'et-zibecheyhe֔m lashsּe'iyri֕m 'ashshe֛r he֥m zoni֖ym 'achareyhe֑m chuqּa֥t 'ola֛m tּiֽheyeh-zּo֥'t lahe֖m ledorotaֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)They must no longer offer any of their sacrifices to the goat idols to whom they prostitute themselves. This is to be a lasting ordinance for them and for the generations to come.’

וְלֹא־יִזְבְּח֥וּ עוֹד֙ אֶת־זִבְחֵיהֶ֔ם לַשְּׂעִירִ֕ם אֲשֶׁ֛ר הֵ֥ם זֹנִ֖ים אַחֲרֵיהֶ֑ם חֻקַּ֥ת עוֹלָ֛ם תִּֽהְיֶה־זֹּ֥את לָהֶ֖ם לְדֹרֹתָֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): va'alehe֣m tּo'ma֔r 'i֥yshsh 'iyshsh֙ mibּe֣yt yishsera'e֔l umin-hagּe֖r 'ashsher-yag֣ur bּetoka֑m 'ashsher-ya'ale֥h 'ola֖h 'o-zaֽbach׃

Edified Edition (EDE)“Say to them: ‘Any Israelite or any foreigner residing among them who offers a burnt offering or sacrifice

וַאֲלֵהֶ֣ם תֹּאמַ֔ר אִ֥ישׁ אִישׁ֙ מִבֵּ֣ית יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל וּמִן־הַגֵּ֖ר אֲשֶׁר־יָג֣וּר בְּתוֹכָ֑ם אֲשֶׁר־יַעֲלֶ֥ה עֹלָ֖ה אוֹ־זָֽבַח׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'el-pּe֜tach 'o֤hel mo'ed֙ lo֣ yebiy'e֔nּu la'ashs֥ot 'ot֖o layhva֑h venikera֛t ha'i֥yshsh hah֖u me'amּaֽyv׃

Edified Edition (EDE)and does not bring it to the entrance to the Tent of Meeting to sacrifice it to the LORD must be cut off from the people.

וְאֶל־פֶּ֜תַח אֹ֤הֶל מוֹעֵד֙ לֹ֣א יְבִיאֶ֔נּוּ לַעֲשׂ֥וֹת אֹת֖וֹ לַיהוָ֑ה וְנִכְרַ֛ת הָאִ֥ישׁ הַה֖וּא מֵעַמָּֽיו׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'i֨yshsh 'i֜yshsh mibּe֣yt yishsera'e֗l umin-hagּer֙ hagּa֣r bּetoka֔m 'ashshe֥r yo'ka֖l kּal-dּa֑m venatatּi֣y pana֗y bּanּe֨peshsh֙ ha'oke֣let 'et-hadּa֔m vehikeratּi֥y 'ota֖hּ miqּe֥reb 'amּaֽhּ׃

Edified Edition (EDE)“‘I will set my face against any Israelite or any foreigner residing among them who eats blood, and I will cut them off from the people.

וְאִ֨ישׁ אִ֜ישׁ מִבֵּ֣ית יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל וּמִן־הַגֵּר֙ הַגָּ֣ר בְּתוֹכָ֔ם אֲשֶׁ֥ר יֹאכַ֖ל כָּל־דָּ֑ם וְנָתַתִּ֣י פָנַ֗י בַּנֶּ֨פֶשׁ֙ הָאֹכֶ֣לֶת אֶת־הַדָּ֔ם וְהִכְרַתִּ֥י אֹתָ֖הּ מִקֶּ֥רֶב עַמָּֽהּ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): kּi֣y ne֣peshsh habּashsar֮ bּadּa֣m hiv'֒ va'ani֞y netatּi֤yv lakem֙ 'al-hamּizebּe֔cha lekapּe֖r 'al-napeshshoteyke֑m kּiֽy-hadּa֥m h֖u bּanּe֥peshsh yekapּeֽr׃

Edified Edition (EDE)For the life of a creature is in the blood, and I have given it to you to make atonement for yourselves on the altar; it is the blood that makes atonement for one’s life.

כִּ֣י נֶ֣פֶשׁ הַבָּשָׂר֮ בַּדָּ֣ם הִוא֒ וַאֲנִ֞י נְתַתִּ֤יו לָכֶם֙ עַל־הַמִּזְבֵּ֔חַ לְכַפֵּ֖ר עַל־נַפְשֹׁתֵיכֶ֑ם כִּֽי־הַדָּ֥ם ה֖וּא בַּנֶּ֥פֶשׁ יְכַפֵּֽר׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): al-kּe֤n 'ama֨retּiy֙ libene֣y yishsera'e֔l kּal-ne֥peshsh mikּe֖m lo'-to֣'kal dּa֑m vehagּe֛r hagּa֥r bּetokeke֖m lo'-yo֥'kal dּaֽm׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)Therefore I say to the Israelites, "None of you may eat blood, nor may any foreigner residing among you eat blood."

עַל־כֵּ֤ן אָמַ֨רְתִּי֙ לִבְנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל כָּל־נֶ֥פֶשׁ מִכֶּ֖ם לֹא־תֹ֣אכַל דָּ֑ם וְהַגֵּ֛ר הַגָּ֥ר בְּתוֹכְכֶ֖ם לֹא־יֹ֥אכַל דָּֽם׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'i֨yshsh 'i֜yshsh mibּene֣y yishsera'e֗l umin-hagּer֙ hagּa֣r bּetoka֔m 'ashshe֨r yatz֜ud tze֥yd chayּa֛h 'o-'֖op 'ashshe֣r ye'ake֑l veshshapake֙ 'et-dּam֔o vekisּa֖hu bּe'apaֽr׃

Edified Edition (EDE)“‘Any Israelite or any foreigner residing among them who hunts any animal or bird that may be eaten must drain out the blood and cover it with earth,

וְאִ֨ישׁ אִ֜ישׁ מִבְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל וּמִן־הַגֵּר֙ הַגָּ֣ר בְּתוֹכָ֔ם אֲשֶׁ֨ר יָצ֜וּד צֵ֥יד חַיָּ֛ה אוֹ־ע֖וֹף אֲשֶׁ֣ר יֵאָכֵ֑ל וְשָׁפַךְ֙ אֶת־דָּמ֔וֹ וְכִסָּ֖הוּ בֶּעָפָֽר׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): kּiֽy-ne֣peshsh kּal-bּashsa֗r dּam֣o benapeshsho֮ hu'֒ vaֽ'omar֙ libene֣y yishsera'e֔l dּa֥m kּal-bּashsa֖r lo֣ to'ke֑lu kּi֣y ne֤peshsh kּal-bּashsar֙ dּam֣o hi֔v kּal-'okela֖yv yikּareֽt׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Because the life of every creature is its blood. That is why I have said to the Israelites, "You must not eat the blood of any creature, because the life of every creature is its blood; anyone who eats it must be cut off."

כִּֽי־נֶ֣פֶשׁ כָּל־בָּשָׂ֗ר דָּמ֣וֹ בְנַפְשׁוֹ֮ הוּא֒ וָֽאֹמַר֙ לִבְנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל דַּ֥ם כָּל־בָּשָׂ֖ר לֹ֣א תֹאכֵ֑לוּ כִּ֣י נֶ֤פֶשׁ כָּל־בָּשָׂר֙ דָּמ֣וֹ הִ֔וא כָּל־אֹכְלָ֖יו יִכָּרֵֽת׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vekal-ne֗peshsh 'ashshe֨r tּo'ka֤l nebelah֙ uterepa֔h bּa'ezera֖ch ubagּe֑r vekibּe֨s bּegada֜yv veracha֥tz bּamּa֛yim vetame֥ 'ad-ha'e֖reb vetaheֽr׃

Edified Edition (EDE)“‘Anyone, whether native-born or foreigner, who eats anything found dead or torn by wild animals must wash their clothes and bathe with water, and they will be unclean till evening; then they will be clean.

וְכָל־נֶ֗פֶשׁ אֲשֶׁ֨ר תֹּאכַ֤ל נְבֵלָה֙ וּטְרֵפָ֔ה בָּאֶזְרָ֖ח וּבַגֵּ֑ר וְכִבֶּ֨ס בְּגָדָ֜יו וְרָחַ֥ץ בַּמַּ֛יִם וְטָמֵ֥א עַד־הָעֶ֖רֶב וְטָהֵֽר׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'im֙ lo֣ yekabּe֔s ubeshsar֖o lo֣ yirecha֑tz venashsa֖ 'avonֽo׃p

Edified Edition (EDE)But if they do not wash their clothes and bathe themselves, they will be held responsible.’”

וְאִם֙ לֹ֣א יְכַבֵּ֔ס וּבְשָׂר֖וֹ לֹ֣א יִרְחָ֑ץ וְנָשָׂ֖א עֲוֺנֽוֹ׃פ
