Chapter 18

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayedabּe֥r yehva֖h 'el-moshshe֥h lּe'moֽr׃

Edified Edition (EDE)The LORD said to Moses,

וַיְדַבֵּ֥ר יְהוָ֖ה אֶל־מֹשֶׁ֥ה לֵּאמֹֽר׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): dּabּer֙ 'el-bּene֣y yishsera'e֔l ve'amaretּa֖ 'alehe֑m 'ani֖y yehva֥h 'eloheykeֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"Speak to the Israelites and say to them: ‘I am the LORD your God.

דַּבֵּר֙ אֶל־בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל וְאָמַרְתָּ֖ אֲלֵהֶ֑ם אֲנִ֖י יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֵיכֶֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): kּema'ashse֧h 'eֽretz-mitzera֛yim 'ashshe֥r yeshshabetּem-bּa֖hּ lo֣ ta'ashs֑u ukema'ashse֣h 'eֽretz-kּena֡'an 'ashshe֣r 'aniy֩ mebi֨y 'eteke֥m shsha֨mּah֙ lo֣ ta'ashs֔u ubechuqּoteyhe֖m lo֥ teleֽku׃

Edified Edition (EDE)You must not do as they do in Egypt, where you used to live, and you must not do as they do in the land of Canaan, where I am bringing you. Do not follow their practices.

כְּמַעֲשֵׂ֧ה אֶֽרֶץ־מִצְרַ֛יִם אֲשֶׁ֥ר יְשַׁבְתֶּם־בָּ֖הּ לֹ֣א תַעֲשׂ֑וּ וּכְמַעֲשֵׂ֣ה אֶֽרֶץ־כְּנַ֡עַן אֲשֶׁ֣ר אֲנִי֩ מֵבִ֨יא אֶתְכֶ֥ם שָׁ֨מָּה֙ לֹ֣א תַעֲשׂ֔וּ וּבְחֻקֹּתֵיהֶ֖ם לֹ֥א תֵלֵֽכוּ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): et-mishshepּata֧y tּa'ashs֛u ve'et-chuqּota֥y tּishshemer֖u lale֣ket bּahe֑m 'ani֖y yehva֥h 'eloheykeֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)You must obey my laws and be careful to follow my decrees. I am the LORD your God.

אֶת־מִשְׁפָּטַ֧י תַּעֲשׂ֛וּ וְאֶת־חֻקֹּתַ֥י תִּשְׁמְר֖וּ לָלֶ֣כֶת בָּהֶ֑ם אֲנִ֖י יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֵיכֶֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ushshemaretּe֤m 'et-chuqּotay֙ ve'et-mishshepּata֔y 'ashshe֨r ya'ashse֥h 'ota֛m ha'ada֖m vacha֣y bּahe֑m 'ani֖y yehvaֽh׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)Keep my decrees and laws, for the person who obeys them will live by them. I am the LORD.

וּשְׁמַרְתֶּ֤ם אֶת־חֻקֹּתַי֙ וְאֶת־מִשְׁפָּטַ֔י אֲשֶׁ֨ר יַעֲשֶׂ֥ה אֹתָ֛ם הָאָדָ֖ם וָחַ֣י בָּהֶ֑ם אֲנִ֖י יְהוָֽה׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): i֥yshsh 'iyshsh֙ 'el-kּal-shshe'e֣r bּeshsar֔o lo֥ tiqereb֖u legalּ֣ot 'ereva֑h 'ani֖y yehvaֽh׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)“‘No one is to approach any close relative to have sexual relations. I am the LORD.

אִ֥ישׁ אִישׁ֙ אֶל־כָּל־שְׁאֵ֣ר בְּשָׂר֔וֹ לֹ֥א תִקְרְב֖וּ לְגַלּ֣וֹת עֶרְוָ֑ה אֲנִ֖י יְהוָֽה׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): ereva֥t 'abi֛yka ve'ereva֥t 'imּeka֖ lo֣ tegalּe֑h 'imּeka֣ hi֔v lo֥ tegalּe֖h 'erevataֽhּ׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)‘Do not dishonour your father by having sexual relations with your mother; she is your mother.

עֶרְוַ֥ת אָבִ֛יךָ וְעֶרְוַ֥ת אִמְּךָ֖ לֹ֣א תְגַלֵּ֑ה אִמְּךָ֣ הִ֔וא לֹ֥א תְגַלֶּ֖ה עֶרְוָתָֽהּ׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): ereva֥t 'eֽshshet-'abi֖yka lo֣ tegalּe֑h 'ereva֥t 'abi֖yka hiֽv'׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)Do not have sexual relations with your father’s wife; that would dishonour your father.

עֶרְוַ֥ת אֵֽשֶׁת־אָבִ֖יךָ לֹ֣א תְגַלֵּ֑ה עֶרְוַ֥ת אָבִ֖יךָ הִֽוא׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): ereva֨t 'achֽoteka֤ bat-'abi֨yka֙ '֣o bat-'imּe֔ka mole֣det bּa֔yit '֖o mole֣det ch֑utz lo֥ tegalּe֖h 'erevataֽn׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)Do not have sexual relations with your sister, whether she was born in your household or elsewhere.

עֶרְוַ֨ת אֲחֽוֹתְךָ֤ בַת־אָבִ֨יךָ֙ א֣וֹ בַת־אִמֶּ֔ךָ מוֹלֶ֣דֶת בַּ֔יִת א֖וֹ מוֹלֶ֣דֶת ח֑וּץ לֹ֥א תְגַלֶּ֖ה עֶרְוָתָֽן׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): ereva֤t bּat-bּineka֙ '֣o baֽt-bּitּeka֔ lo֥ tegalּe֖h 'erevata֑n kּi֥y 'erevateka֖ heֽnּah׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)Do not have sexual relations with your son’s daughter or your daughter’s daughter; that would dishonour your family.

עֶרְוַ֤ת בַּת־בִּנְךָ֙ א֣וֹ בַֽת־בִּתְּךָ֔ לֹ֥א תְגַלֶּ֖ה עֶרְוָתָ֑ן כִּ֥י עֶרְוָתְךָ֖ הֵֽנָּה׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): ereva֨t bּat-'e֤shshet 'abi֨yka֙ mole֣det 'abi֔yka 'achoteka֖ hi֑v lo֥ tegalּe֖h 'erevataֽhּ׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)Do not have sexual relations with the daughter of your father’s wife.

עֶרְוַ֨ת בַּת־אֵ֤שֶׁת אָבִ֨יךָ֙ מוֹלֶ֣דֶת אָבִ֔יךָ אֲחוֹתְךָ֖ הִ֑וא לֹ֥א תְגַלֶּ֖ה עֶרְוָתָֽהּ׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): ereva֥t 'achot-'abi֖yka lo֣ tegalּe֑h shshe'e֥r 'abi֖yka hiֽv'׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)Do not have sexual relations with your father’s sister; she is your father’s close relative.

עֶרְוַ֥ת אֲחוֹת־אָבִ֖יךָ לֹ֣א תְגַלֵּ֑ה שְׁאֵ֥ר אָבִ֖יךָ הִֽוא׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): ereva֥t 'achֽot-'imּeka֖ lo֣ tegalּe֑h kּiֽy-shshe'e֥r 'imּeka֖ hiֽv'׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)Do not have sexual relations with your mother’s sister; she is your mother’s close relative.

עֶרְוַ֥ת אֲחֽוֹת־אִמְּךָ֖ לֹ֣א תְגַלֵּ֑ה כִּֽי־שְׁאֵ֥ר אִמְּךָ֖ הִֽוא׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): ereva֥t 'achiֽy-'abi֖yka lo֣ tegalּe֑h 'el-'ishshetּo֙ lo֣ tiqera֔b dּodaֽteka֖ hiֽv'׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)Do not dishonour your father’s brother by approaching his wife to have sexual relations; she is your aunt.

עֶרְוַ֥ת אֲחִֽי־אָבִ֖יךָ לֹ֣א תְגַלֵּ֑ה אֶל־אִשְׁתּוֹ֙ לֹ֣א תִקְרָ֔ב דֹּדָֽתְךָ֖ הִֽוא׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): ereva֥t kּalּaֽteka֖ lo֣ tegalּe֑h 'e֤shshet bּineka֙ hi֔v lo֥ tegalּe֖h 'erevataֽhּ׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)Do not have sexual relations with your daughter-in-law; she is your son’s wife.

עֶרְוַ֥ת כַּלָּֽתְךָ֖ לֹ֣א תְגַלֵּ֑ה אֵ֤שֶׁת בִּנְךָ֙ הִ֔וא לֹ֥א תְגַלֶּ֖ה עֶרְוָתָֽהּ׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): ereva֥t 'eֽshshet-'achi֖yka lo֣ tegalּe֑h 'ereva֥t 'achi֖yka hiֽv'׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)Do not have sexual relations with your brother’s wife; that would dishonour your brother.

עֶרְוַ֥ת אֵֽשֶׁת־אָחִ֖יךָ לֹ֣א תְגַלֵּ֑ה עֶרְוַ֥ת אָחִ֖יךָ הִֽוא׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): ereva֥t 'ishshּa֛h ubitּa֖hּ lo֣ tegalּe֑h 'eֽt-bּat-bּena֞hּ ve'et-bּat-bּitּa֗hּ lo֤ tiqּach֙ legalּ֣ot 'erevata֔hּ shsha'ara֥h he֖nּah zimּa֥h hiֽv'

Edified Edition (EDE)Do not have sexual relations with both a woman and her daughter. Do not have relations with her son’s daughter or her daughter’s daughter; that is wickedness.

עֶרְוַ֥ת אִשָּׁ֛ה וּבִתָּ֖הּ לֹ֣א תְגַלֵּ֑ה אֶֽת־בַּת־בְּנָ֞הּ וְאֶת־בַּת־בִּתָּ֗הּ לֹ֤א תִקַּח֙ לְגַלּ֣וֹת עֶרְוָתָ֔הּ שַׁאֲרָ֥ה הֵ֖נָּה זִמָּ֥ה הִֽוא

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'ishshּa֥h 'el-'achota֖hּ lo֣ tiqּa֑ch litzero֗r legalּ֧ot 'erevata֛hּ 'ale֖yha bּechayּeֽyha׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Do not take your wife’s sister as a rival wife and have sexual relations with her while your wife is living.

וְאִשָּׁ֥ה אֶל־אֲחֹתָ֖הּ לֹ֣א תִקָּ֑ח לִצְרֹ֗ר לְגַלּ֧וֹת עֶרְוָתָ֛הּ עָלֶ֖יהָ בְּחַיֶּֽיהָ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'el-'ishshּa֖h bּenidּa֣t tume'ata֑hּ lo֣ tiqera֔b legalּ֖ot 'erevataֽhּ׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Do not approach a woman to have sexual relations during her monthly period.

וְאֶל־אִשָּׁ֖ה בְּנִדַּ֣ת טֻמְאָתָ֑הּ לֹ֣א תִקְרַ֔ב לְגַלּ֖וֹת עֶרְוָתָֽהּ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'el-'e֨shshet֙ 'amiֽyteka֔ lo'-titּe֥n shshekabetּeka֖ leza֑ra letame'ah-baֽhּ׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Do not have sexual relations with your neighbour’s wife and defile yourself with her.

וְאֶל־אֵ֨שֶׁת֙ עֲמִֽיתְךָ֔ לֹא־תִתֵּ֥ן שְׁכָבְתְּךָ֖ לְזָ֑רַע לְטָמְאָה־בָֽהּ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): umiֽzּare'aka֥ lo'-titּe֖n leha'abi֣yr lamּo֑leke velo֧ techalּe֛l 'et-shshe֥m 'elohe֖yka 'ani֥y yehvaֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)“‘Do not give any of your children to be sacrificed to Molek, for you must not profane the name of your God. I am the LORD.

וּמִֽזַּרְעֲךָ֥ לֹא־תִתֵּ֖ן לְהַעֲבִ֣יר לַמֹּ֑לֶךְ וְלֹ֧א תְחַלֵּ֛ל אֶת־שֵׁ֥ם אֱלֹהֶ֖יךָ אֲנִ֥י יְהוָֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'e֨t-zaka֔r lo֥ tishshekּa֖b mishshekּebe֣y 'ishshּa֑h tּo'eba֖h hiֽv'׃

Edified Edition (EDE)“‘Do not have sexual relations with a man as one does with a woman; that is detestable.

וְאֶ֨ת־זָכָ֔ר לֹ֥א תִשְׁכַּ֖ב מִשְׁכְּבֵ֣י אִשָּׁ֑ה תּוֹעֵבָ֖ה הִֽוא׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ubekal-bּehema֛h lo'-titּe֥n shshekabetּeka֖ letame'ah-ba֑hּ ve'ishshּa֗h loֽ'-ta'amo֞d lipene֧y behema֛h leribe'a֖hּ tּe֥bel hֽu'׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Do not have sexual relations with an animal and defile yourself with it; a woman must not present herself to an animal; that is a perversion.

וּבְכָל־בְּהֵמָ֛ה לֹא־תִתֵּ֥ן שְׁכָבְתְּךָ֖ לְטָמְאָה־בָ֑הּ וְאִשָּׁ֗ה לֹֽא־תַעֲמֹ֞ד לִפְנֵ֧י בְהֵמָ֛ה לְרִבְעָ֖הּ תֶּ֥בֶל הֽוּא׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): al-tּiֽtּamּe'֖u bּekal-'e֑lּeh kּi֤y bekal-'e֨lּeh֙ niteme'֣u hagּoyi֔m 'ashsher-'ani֥y meshshalּe֖cha mipּeneykeֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)“‘Do not defile yourselves in any of these ways, because this is how the nations that I am going to drive out before you became defiled.

אַל־תִּֽטַּמְּא֖וּ בְּכָל־אֵ֑לֶּה כִּ֤י בְכָל־אֵ֨לֶּה֙ נִטְמְא֣וּ הַגּוֹיִ֔ם אֲשֶׁר־אֲנִ֥י מְשַׁלֵּ֖חַ מִפְּנֵיכֶֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּitema֣ ha'a֔retz va'epeqo֥d 'avona֖hּ 'ale֑yha vatּaqi֥ ha'a֖retz 'et-yoshshebeֽyha׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Even the land was defiled; so I punished it for its sin, and the land vomited out its inhabitants.

וַתִּטְמָ֣א הָאָ֔רֶץ וָאֶפְקֹ֥ד עֲוֺנָ֖הּ עָלֶ֑יהָ וַתָּקִ֥א הָאָ֖רֶץ אֶת־יֹשְׁבֶֽיהָ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ushshemaretּe֣m 'atּe֗m 'et-chuqּotay֙ ve'et-mishshepּata֔y velo֣ ta'ashs֔u mikּo֥l hatּo'ebo֖t ha'e֑lּeh haֽ'ezera֔ch vehagּe֖r hagּa֥r bּetokekeֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)But you must keep my decrees and my laws. The native-born and the foreigners residing among you must not do any of these detestable things,

וּשְׁמַרְתֶּ֣ם אַתֶּ֗ם אֶת־חֻקֹּתַי֙ וְאֶת־מִשְׁפָּטַ֔י וְלֹ֣א תַעֲשׂ֔וּ מִכֹּ֥ל הַתּוֹעֵבֹ֖ת הָאֵ֑לֶּה הָֽאֶזְרָ֔ח וְהַגֵּ֖ר הַגָּ֥ר בְּתוֹכְכֶֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): kּi֚y 'et-kּal-hatּo'ebo֣t ha'e֔l 'ashs֥u 'aneshsheֽy-ha'a֖retz 'ashshe֣r lipeneyke֑m vatּitema֖ ha'aֽretz׃

Edified Edition (EDE)for all these things were done by the people who lived in the land before you, and the land became defiled.

כִּ֚י אֶת־כָּל־הַתּוֹעֵבֹ֣ת הָאֵ֔ל עָשׂ֥וּ אַנְשֵֽׁי־הָאָ֖רֶץ אֲשֶׁ֣ר לִפְנֵיכֶ֑ם וַתִּטְמָ֖א הָאָֽרֶץ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): veloֽ'-taqi֤y ha'a֨retz֙ 'eteke֔m bּetaֽmּa'ake֖m 'ota֑hּ kּa'ashshe֥r qa'a֛h 'et-hagּ֖oy 'ashshe֥r lipeneykeֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)And if you defile the land, it will vomit you out as it vomited out the nations that were before you.

וְלֹֽא־תָקִ֤יא הָאָ֨רֶץ֙ אֶתְכֶ֔ם בְּטַֽמַּאֲכֶ֖ם אֹתָ֑הּ כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר קָאָ֛ה אֶת־הַגּ֖וֹי אֲשֶׁ֥ר לִפְנֵיכֶֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): kּi֚y kּal-'ashshe֣r ya'ashse֔h mikּo֥l hatּo'eb֖ot ha'e֑lּeh venikeret֛u hanּepashsh֥ot ha'oshso֖t miqּe֥reb 'amּaֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Everyone who does any of these detestable things must be cut off from their people.

כִּ֚י כָּל־אֲשֶׁ֣ר יַעֲשֶׂ֔ה מִכֹּ֥ל הַתּוֹעֵב֖וֹת הָאֵ֑לֶּה וְנִכְרְת֛וּ הַנְּפָשׁ֥וֹת הָעֹשֹׂ֖ת מִקֶּ֥רֶב עַמָּֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ushshemaretּe֣m 'et-mishshemaretּi֗y lebiletּi֨y 'ashs֜ot mechuqּ֤ot hatּֽo'ebot֙ 'ashshe֣r na'ashs֣u lipeneyke֔m velo֥ tiֽtּamּe'֖u bּahe֑m 'ani֖y yehva֥h 'eloheykeֽm׃p

Edified Edition (EDE)Keep my requirements and do not follow any of the detestable customs that were practised before you came and do not defile yourselves with them. I am the LORD your God.’

וּשְׁמַרְתֶּ֣ם אֶת־מִשְׁמַרְתִּ֗י לְבִלְתִּ֨י עֲשׂ֜וֹת מֵחֻקּ֤וֹת הַתּֽוֹעֵבֹת֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר נַעֲשׂ֣וּ לִפְנֵיכֶ֔ם וְלֹ֥א תִֽטַּמְּא֖וּ בָּהֶ֑ם אֲנִ֖י יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֵיכֶֽם׃פ
