Chapter 20

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayedabּe֥r yehva֖h 'el-moshshe֥h lּe'moֽr׃

Edified Edition (EDE)The LORD said to Moses,

וַיְדַבֵּ֥ר יְהוָ֖ה אֶל־מֹשֶׁ֥ה לֵּאמֹֽר׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'el-bּene֣y yishsera'e֘l tּo'mar֒ 'i֣yshsh 'iyshsh֩ mibּene֨y yishsera'e֜l umin-hagּe֣r ׀ hagּa֣r bּeyishsera'e֗l 'ashshe֨r yitּe֧n mizּare'֛o lamּo֖leke m֣ot yuma֑t 'a֥m ha'a֖retz yiregּemu֥hu ba'aֽben׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"Say to the Israelites: ‘Any Israelite or any foreigner residing in Israel who sacrifices any of his children to Molek is to be put to death. The people of the community are to stone him.

וְאֶל־בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֘ל תֹּאמַר֒ אִ֣ישׁ אִישׁ֩ מִבְּנֵ֨י יִשְׂרָאֵ֜ל וּמִן־הַגֵּ֣ר ׀ הַגָּ֣ר בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל אֲשֶׁ֨ר יִתֵּ֧ן מִזַּרְע֛וֹ לַמֹּ֖לֶךְ מ֣וֹת יוּמָ֑ת עַ֥ם הָאָ֖רֶץ יִרְגְּמֻ֥הוּ בָאָֽבֶן׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): va'ani֞y 'etּe֤n 'et-pּanay֙ bּa'i֣yshsh hah֔u vehikeratּi֥y 'ot֖o miqּe֣reb 'amּ֑o kּi֤y mizּare'o֙ nata֣n lamּo֔leke lema֗'an tamּe'֙ 'et-miqedּashshi֔y ulechalּe֖l 'et-shshe֥m qadeshshiֽy׃

Edified Edition (EDE)I will set my face against that man and will cut him off from his people; for by giving his children to Molek, he has defiled my sanctuary and profaned my holy name.

וַאֲנִ֞י אֶתֵּ֤ן אֶת־פָּנַי֙ בָּאִ֣ישׁ הַה֔וּא וְהִכְרַתִּ֥י אֹת֖וֹ מִקֶּ֣רֶב עַמּ֑וֹ כִּ֤י מִזַּרְעוֹ֙ נָתַ֣ן לַמֹּ֔לֶךְ לְמַ֗עַן טַמֵּא֙ אֶת־מִקְדָּשִׁ֔י וּלְחַלֵּ֖ל אֶת־שֵׁ֥ם קָדְשִֽׁי׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'i֡m ha'ele֣m ya'eliymֽu֩ 'a֨m ha'a֜retz 'et-'eֽyneyhem֙ min-ha'i֣yshsh hah֔u bּetitּ֥o mizּare'֖o lamּo֑leke lebiletּi֖y hami֥yt 'otֽo׃

Edified Edition (EDE)If the people of the community close their eyes to his sin, and fail to put him to death,

וְאִ֡ם הַעְלֵ֣ם יַעְלִימֽוּ֩ עַ֨ם הָאָ֜רֶץ אֶת־עֵֽינֵיהֶם֙ מִן־הָאִ֣ישׁ הַה֔וּא בְּתִתּ֥וֹ מִזַּרְע֖וֹ לַמֹּ֑לֶךְ לְבִלְתִּ֖י הָמִ֥ית אֹתֽוֹ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): veshsametּi֨y 'ani֧y 'et-pּana֛y bּa'i֥yshsh hah֖u ubemishshepּachetּ֑o vehikeratּi֨y 'ot֜o ve'e֣t ׀ kּal-hazּoni֣ym 'achara֗yv lizen֛ot 'achare֥y hamּo֖leke miqּe֥reb 'amּaֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)I myself will set my face against him and his family and will cut them off from their people, together with all who follow him in prostituting themselves to Molek.

וְשַׂמְתִּ֨י אֲנִ֧י אֶת־פָּנַ֛י בָּאִ֥ישׁ הַה֖וּא וּבְמִשְׁפַּחְתּ֑וֹ וְהִכְרַתִּ֨י אֹת֜וֹ וְאֵ֣ת ׀ כָּל־הַזֹּנִ֣ים אַחֲרָ֗יו לִזְנ֛וֹת אַחֲרֵ֥י הַמֹּ֖לֶךְ מִקֶּ֥רֶב עַמָּֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vehanּe֗peshsh 'ashshe֨r tּipene֤h 'el-haֽ'obot֙ ve'el-hayּidּe'oni֔ym lizen֖ot 'achareyhe֑m venatatּi֤y 'et-pּanay֙ bּanּe֣peshsh hahi֔v vehikeratּi֥y 'ot֖o miqּe֥reb 'amּֽo׃

Edified Edition (EDE)“‘I will set my face against anyone who turns to mediums and spiritists to prostitute themselves by following them, and I will cut them off from their people.

וְהַנֶּ֗פֶשׁ אֲשֶׁ֨ר תִּפְנֶ֤ה אֶל־הָֽאֹבֹת֙ וְאֶל־הַיִּדְּעֹנִ֔ים לִזְנ֖וֹת אַחֲרֵיהֶ֑ם וְנָתַתִּ֤י אֶת־פָּנַי֙ בַּנֶּ֣פֶשׁ הַהִ֔וא וְהִכְרַתִּ֥י אֹת֖וֹ מִקֶּ֥רֶב עַמּֽוֹ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vehi֨teqadּishshetּe֔m viheyiyte֖m qedoshshi֑ym kּi֛y 'ani֥y yehva֖h 'eloheykeֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)“‘Consecrate yourselves and be holy, because I am the LORD your God.

וְהִ֨תְקַדִּשְׁתֶּ֔ם וִהְיִיתֶ֖ם קְדֹשִׁ֑ים כִּ֛י אֲנִ֥י יְהוָ֖ה אֱלֹהֵיכֶֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ushshemaretּem֙ 'et-chuqּota֔y va'ashsiyte֖m 'ota֑m 'ani֥y yehva֖h meqadּishshekeֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Keep my decrees and follow them. I am the LORD, who makes you holy.

וּשְׁמַרְתֶּם֙ אֶת־חֻקֹּתַ֔י וַעֲשִׂיתֶ֖ם אֹתָ֑ם אֲנִ֥י יְהוָ֖ה מְקַדִּשְׁכֶֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): kּiֽy-'i֣yshsh 'i֗yshsh 'ashshe֨r yeqalּe֧l 'et-'abi֛yv ve'et-'imּ֖o m֣ot yuma֑t 'abi֧yv ve'imּ֛o qilּe֖l dּama֥yv bּֽo׃

Edified Edition (EDE)“‘Anyone who curses their father or mother is to be put to death. Because they have cursed their father or mother, their blood will be on their own head.

כִּֽי־אִ֣ישׁ אִ֗ישׁ אֲשֶׁ֨ר יְקַלֵּ֧ל אֶת־אָבִ֛יו וְאֶת־אִמּ֖וֹ מ֣וֹת יוּמָ֑ת אָבִ֧יו וְאִמּ֛וֹ קִלֵּ֖ל דָּמָ֥יו בּֽוֹ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'i֗yshsh 'ashshe֤r yine'ap֙ 'et-'e֣shshet 'i֔yshsh 'ashshe֥r yine'a֖p 'et-'e֣shshet re'e֑hu mֽot-yuma֥t hanּo'e֖p vehanּo'aֽpet׃

Edified Edition (EDE)If a man commits adultery with another man’s wife, with the wife of his neighbour, both the adulterer and the adulteress are to be put to death.

וְאִ֗ישׁ אֲשֶׁ֤ר יִנְאַף֙ אֶת־אֵ֣שֶׁת אִ֔ישׁ אֲשֶׁ֥ר יִנְאַ֖ף אֶת־אֵ֣שֶׁת רֵעֵ֑הוּ מֽוֹת־יוּמַ֥ת הַנֹּאֵ֖ף וְהַנֹּאָֽפֶת׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'i֗yshsh 'ashshe֤r yishshekּab֙ 'et-'e֣shshet 'abi֔yv 'ereva֥t 'abi֖yv gּilּa֑h mֽot-yumet֥u shsheneyhe֖m dּemeyhe֥m bּaֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)If a man has sexual relations with his father’s wife, he has dishonoured his father. Both the man and the woman are to be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads.

וְאִ֗ישׁ אֲשֶׁ֤ר יִשְׁכַּב֙ אֶת־אֵ֣שֶׁת אָבִ֔יו עֶרְוַ֥ת אָבִ֖יו גִּלָּ֑ה מֽוֹת־יוּמְת֥וּ שְׁנֵיהֶ֖ם דְּמֵיהֶ֥ם בָּֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'i֗yshsh 'ashshe֤r yishshekּab֙ 'et-kּalּat֔o m֥ot yumet֖u shsheneyhe֑m tּe֥bel 'ashs֖u dּemeyhe֥m bּaֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)If a man has sexual relations with his daughter-in-law, both of them are to be put to death. What they have done is a perversion; their blood will be on their own heads.

וְאִ֗ישׁ אֲשֶׁ֤ר יִשְׁכַּב֙ אֶת־כַּלָּת֔וֹ מ֥וֹת יוּמְת֖וּ שְׁנֵיהֶ֑ם תֶּ֥בֶל עָשׂ֖וּ דְּמֵיהֶ֥ם בָּֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'i֗yshsh 'ashshe֨r yishshekּa֤b 'et-zakar֙ mishshekּebe֣y 'ishshּa֔h tּo'eba֥h 'ashs֖u shsheneyhe֑m m֥ot yuma֖tu dּemeyhe֥m bּaֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)If a man has sexual relations with a man as one does with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They are to be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads.

וְאִ֗ישׁ אֲשֶׁ֨ר יִשְׁכַּ֤ב אֶת־זָכָר֙ מִשְׁכְּבֵ֣י אִשָּׁ֔ה תּוֹעֵבָ֥ה עָשׂ֖וּ שְׁנֵיהֶ֑ם מ֥וֹת יוּמָ֖תוּ דְּמֵיהֶ֥ם בָּֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'i֗yshsh 'ashshe֨r yiqּa֧ch 'et-'ishshּa֛h ve'et-'imּa֖hּ zimּa֣h hi֑v bּa'e֞shsh yishserep֤u 'oto֙ ve'etehe֔n velo'-tiheye֥h zimּa֖h bּetokekeֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)If a man marries both a woman and her mother, it is wicked. Both he and they must be burned in the fire, so that no wickedness will be among you.

וְאִ֗ישׁ אֲשֶׁ֨ר יִקַּ֧ח אֶת־אִשָּׁ֛ה וְאֶת־אִמָּ֖הּ זִמָּ֣ה הִ֑וא בָּאֵ֞שׁ יִשְׂרְפ֤וּ אֹתוֹ֙ וְאֶתְהֶ֔ן וְלֹא־תִהְיֶ֥ה זִמָּ֖ה בְּתוֹכְכֶֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'i֗yshsh 'ashshe֨r yitּe֧n shshekabetּ֛o bּibehema֖h m֣ot yuma֑t ve'et-habּehema֖h tּaharoֽgu׃

Edified Edition (EDE)If a man has sexual relations with an animal, he is to be put to death, and you must kill the animal.

וְאִ֗ישׁ אֲשֶׁ֨ר יִתֵּ֧ן שְׁכָבְתּ֛וֹ בִּבְהֵמָ֖ה מ֣וֹת יוּמָ֑ת וְאֶת־הַבְּהֵמָ֖ה תַּהֲרֹֽגוּ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'ishshּa֗h 'ashshe֨r tּiqera֤b 'el-kּal-bּehemah֙ leribe'a֣h 'ota֔hּ veharagetּa֥ 'et-ha'ishshּa֖h ve'et-habּehema֑h m֥ot yuma֖tu dּemeyhe֥m bּaֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)If a woman approaches an animal to have sexual relations with it, kill both the woman and the animal. They are to be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads.

וְאִשָּׁ֗ה אֲשֶׁ֨ר תִּקְרַ֤ב אֶל־כָּל־בְּהֵמָה֙ לְרִבְעָ֣ה אֹתָ֔הּ וְהָרַגְתָּ֥ אֶת־הָאִשָּׁ֖ה וְאֶת־הַבְּהֵמָ֑ה מ֥וֹת יוּמָ֖תוּ דְּמֵיהֶ֥ם בָּֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'i֣yshsh 'ashsher-yiqּa֣ch 'et-'achot֡o bּat-'abi֣yv '֣o bat-'i֠mּo vera'a֨h 'et-'erevata֜hּ vehiֽy'-tire'e֤h 'et-'erevato֙ che֣sed h֔u veni֨keret֔u le'eyne֖y bּene֣y 'amּa֑m 'ereva֧t 'achot֛o gּilּa֖h 'avon֥o yishsּaֽ'׃

Edified Edition (EDE)If a man marries his sister, whether the daughter of his father or the daughter of his mother, it is a disgrace. They must be publicly cut off from their people; he has dishonoured his sister and will be held responsible.

וְאִ֣ישׁ אֲשֶׁר־יִקַּ֣ח אֶת־אֲחֹת֡וֹ בַּת־אָבִ֣יו א֣וֹ בַת־אִ֠מּוֹ וְרָאָ֨ה אֶת־עֶרְוָתָ֜הּ וְהִֽיא־תִרְאֶ֤ה אֶת־עֶרְוָתוֹ֙ חֶ֣סֶד ה֔וּא וְנִ֨כְרְת֔וּ לְעֵינֵ֖י בְּנֵ֣י עַמָּ֑ם עֶרְוַ֧ת אֲחֹת֛וֹ גִּלָּ֖ה עֲוֺנ֥וֹ יִשָּֽׂא׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve֠'iyshsh 'ashsher-yishshekּa֨b 'et-'ishshּa֜h dּava֗h vegilּa֤h 'et-'erevatahּ֙ 'et-meqora֣hּ heֽ'era֔h vehi֕y gּilּeta֖h 'et-meq֣or dּame֑yha venikeret֥u shsheneyhe֖m miqּe֥reb 'amּaֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)If a man has sexual relations with a woman during her monthly period and uncovers her source, he has exposed the source of her flow, and she has also uncovered it. Both of them are to be cut off from their people.

וְ֠אִישׁ אֲשֶׁר־יִשְׁכַּ֨ב אֶת־אִשָּׁ֜ה דָּוָ֗ה וְגִלָּ֤ה אֶת־עֶרְוָתָהּ֙ אֶת־מְקֹרָ֣הּ הֶֽעֱרָ֔ה וְהִ֕יא גִּלְּתָ֖ה אֶת־מְק֣וֹר דָּמֶ֑יהָ וְנִכְרְת֥וּ שְׁנֵיהֶ֖ם מִקֶּ֥רֶב עַמָּֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'ereva֨t 'ach֧ot 'imּeka֛ va'ach֥ot 'abi֖yka lo֣ tegalּe֑h kּi֧y 'et-shshe'er֛o he'era֖h 'avona֥m yishsּaֽ'u׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Do not have sexual relations with the sister of your mother or of your father; anyone who does so has dishonoured a close relative and will be held responsible.

וְעֶרְוַ֨ת אֲח֧וֹת אִמְּךָ֛ וַאֲח֥וֹת אָבִ֖יךָ לֹ֣א תְגַלֵּ֑ה כִּ֧י אֶת־שְׁאֵר֛וֹ הֶעֱרָ֖ה עֲוֺנָ֥ם יִשָּֽׂאוּ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'i֗yshsh 'ashshe֤r yishshekּab֙ 'et-dּo֣dat֔o 'ereva֥t dּod֖o gּilּa֑h chete'a֥m yishsּa֖'u 'ariyri֥ym yamuֽtu׃

Edified Edition (EDE)If a man has sexual relations with his aunt, he has dishonoured his uncle. They will be held responsible and will die childless.

וְאִ֗ישׁ אֲשֶׁ֤ר יִשְׁכַּב֙ אֶת־דֹּ֣דָת֔וֹ עֶרְוַ֥ת דֹּד֖וֹ גִּלָּ֑ה חֶטְאָ֥ם יִשָּׂ֖אוּ עֲרִירִ֥ים יָמֻֽתוּ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'i֗yshsh 'ashshe֥r yiqּa֛ch 'et-'e֥shshet 'achi֖yv nidּa֣h hi֑v 'ereva֥t 'achi֛yv gּilּa֖h 'ariyri֥ym yiheyֽu׃

Edified Edition (EDE)If a man marries his brother’s wife, it is an act of impurity; he has dishonoured his brother, and they will be childless.

וְאִ֗ישׁ אֲשֶׁ֥ר יִקַּ֛ח אֶת־אֵ֥שֶׁת אָחִ֖יו נִדָּ֣ה הִ֑וא עֶרְוַ֥ת אָחִ֛יו גִּלָּ֖ה עֲרִירִ֥ים יִהְיֽוּ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ushshemaretּe֤m 'et-kּal-chuqּotay֙ ve'et-kּal-mishshepּata֔y va'ashsiyte֖m 'ota֑m velo'-taqi֤y 'etekem֙ ha'a֔retz 'ashshe֨r 'ani֜y mebi֥y 'eteke֛m shsha֖mּah lashshe֥bet bּaֽhּ׃

Edified Edition (EDE)“‘Keep all my decrees and laws and follow them, so that the land where I am bringing you to live may not vomit you out.

וּשְׁמַרְתֶּ֤ם אֶת־כָּל־חֻקֹּתַי֙ וְאֶת־כָּל־מִשְׁפָּטַ֔י וַעֲשִׂיתֶ֖ם אֹתָ֑ם וְלֹא־תָקִ֤יא אֶתְכֶם֙ הָאָ֔רֶץ אֲשֶׁ֨ר אֲנִ֜י מֵבִ֥יא אֶתְכֶ֛ם שָׁ֖מָּה לָשֶׁ֥בֶת בָּֽהּ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): velo֤ teֽleku֙ bּechuqּo֣t hagּ֔oy 'ashsher-'ani֥y meshshalּe֖cha mipּeneyke֑m kּi֤y 'et-kּal-'e֨lּeh֙ 'ashs֔u va'aqu֖tz bּaֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)You must not live according to the customs of the nations I am going to drive out before you. Because they did all these things, I abhorred them.

וְלֹ֤א תֵֽלְכוּ֙ בְּחֻקֹּ֣ת הַגּ֔וֹי אֲשֶׁר־אֲנִ֥י מְשַׁלֵּ֖חַ מִפְּנֵיכֶ֑ם כִּ֤י אֶת־כָּל־אֵ֨לֶּה֙ עָשׂ֔וּ וָאָקֻ֖ץ בָּֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): va'oma֣r lake֗m 'atּem֮ tּiֽyreshsh֣u 'et-'adematam֒ va'ani֞y 'etּene֤nּah lakem֙ lare֣shshet 'ota֔hּ 'e֛retz zaba֥t chala֖b udeba֑shsh 'aniy֙ yehva֣h 'eloֽheyke֔m 'ashsher-hibedּa֥letּiy 'eteke֖m min-haֽ'amּiֽym׃

Edified Edition (EDE)But I said to you, ‘You will possess their land; I will give it to you as an inheritance, a land flowing with milk and honey.’ I am the LORD your God, who has set you apart from the nations.

וָאֹמַ֣ר לָכֶ֗ם אַתֶּם֮ תִּֽירְשׁ֣וּ אֶת־אַדְמָתָם֒ וַאֲנִ֞י אֶתְּנֶ֤נָּה לָכֶם֙ לָרֶ֣שֶׁת אֹתָ֔הּ אֶ֛רֶץ זָבַ֥ת חָלָ֖ב וּדְבָ֑שׁ אֲנִי֙ יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹֽהֵיכֶ֔ם אֲשֶׁר־הִבְדַּ֥לְתִּי אֶתְכֶ֖ם מִן־הָֽעַמִּֽים׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vehibedּaletּe֞m bּeֽyn-habּehema֤h hatּehorah֙ latּeme'a֔h ubeyn-ha'֥op hatּame֖ latּaho֑r veloֽ'-teshshaqּetz֨u 'et-napeshshoֽteyke֜m bּabּehema֣h uba'֗op ubekol֙ 'ashshe֣r tּiremo֣shs haֽ'adama֔h 'ashsher-hibedּa֥letּiy lake֖m letamּeֽ'׃

Edified Edition (EDE)You must therefore distinguish between clean and unclean animals and between unclean and clean birds. Do not defile yourselves by any animal or bird or anything that moves along the ground, those that I have set apart as unclean for you.

וְהִבְדַּלְתֶּ֞ם בֵּֽין־הַבְּהֵמָ֤ה הַטְּהֹרָה֙ לַטְּמֵאָ֔ה וּבֵין־הָע֥וֹף הַטָּמֵ֖א לַטָּהֹ֑ר וְלֹֽא־תְשַׁקְּצ֨וּ אֶת־נַפְשֹֽׁתֵיכֶ֜ם בַּבְּהֵמָ֣ה וּבָע֗וֹף וּבְכֹל֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר תִּרְמֹ֣שׂ הָֽאֲדָמָ֔ה אֲשֶׁר־הִבְדַּ֥לְתִּי לָכֶ֖ם לְטַמֵּֽא׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): viheyi֤ytem liy֙ qedoshshi֔ym kּi֥y qad֖oshsh 'ani֣y yehva֑h va'abedּi֥l 'eteke֛m min-hֽa'amּi֖ym lihey֥ot liֽy׃

Edified Edition (EDE)You are to be holy to me because I, the LORD, am holy, and I have set you apart from the nations to be my own.

וִהְיִ֤יתֶם לִי֙ קְדֹשִׁ֔ים כִּ֥י קָד֖וֹשׁ אֲנִ֣י יְהוָ֑ה וָאַבְדִּ֥ל אֶתְכֶ֛ם מִן־הָֽעַמִּ֖ים לִהְי֥וֹת לִֽי׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'i֣yshsh 'ֽo-'ishshּa֗h kּiֽy-yiheye֨h bahe֥m '֛ob '֥o yidּe'oni֖y m֣ot yuma֑tu bּa'e֛ben yiregּem֥u 'ota֖m dּemeyhe֥m bּaֽm׃p

Edified Edition (EDE)“‘A man or woman who is a medium or spiritist among you must be put to death. You are to stone them; their blood will be on their own heads.’

וְאִ֣ישׁ אֽוֹ־אִשָּׁ֗ה כִּֽי־יִהְיֶ֨ה בָהֶ֥ם א֛וֹב א֥וֹ יִדְּעֹנִ֖י מ֣וֹת יוּמָ֑תוּ בָּאֶ֛בֶן יִרְגְּמ֥וּ אֹתָ֖ם דְּמֵיהֶ֥ם בָּֽם׃פ
