Chapter 21

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֤'mer yehvah֙ 'el-moshshe֔h 'emo֥r 'el-hakּohani֖ym bּene֣y 'aharo֑n ve'amaretּa֣ 'alehe֔m lene֥peshsh loֽ'-yitּamּa֖ bּe'amּaֽyv׃

Edified Edition (EDE)The LORD said to Moses, "Speak to the priests, the sons of Aaron, and say to them: ‘A priest must not make himself ceremonially unclean by mourning for any of his people who die,

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר יְהוָה֙ אֶל־מֹשֶׁ֔ה אֱמֹ֥ר אֶל־הַכֹּהֲנִ֖ים בְּנֵ֣י אַהֲרֹ֑ן וְאָמַרְתָּ֣ אֲלֵהֶ֔ם לְנֶ֥פֶשׁ לֹֽא־יִטַּמָּ֖א בְּעַמָּֽיו׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): kּi֚y 'im-lishshe'er֔o haqּaro֖b 'ela֑yv le'imּ֣o ule'abi֔yv veliben֥o ulebitּ֖o ule'achiֽyv׃

Edified Edition (EDE)except for a close relative, such as his mother or father, his son or daughter, his brother,

כִּ֚י אִם־לִשְׁאֵר֔וֹ הַקָּרֹ֖ב אֵלָ֑יו לְאִמּ֣וֹ וּלְאָבִ֔יו וְלִבְנ֥וֹ וּלְבִתּ֖וֹ וּלְאָחִֽיו׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vela'achot֤o habּetulah֙ haqּeroba֣h 'ela֔yv 'ashshe֥r loֽ'-hayeta֖h le'i֑yshsh la֖hּ yitּamּaֽ'׃

Edified Edition (EDE)or an unmarried sister who is dependent on him.

וְלַאֲחֹת֤וֹ הַבְּתוּלָה֙ הַקְּרוֹבָ֣ה אֵלָ֔יו אֲשֶׁ֥ר לֹֽא־הָיְתָ֖ה לְאִ֑ישׁ לָ֖הּ יִטַּמָּֽא׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): lo֥ yitּamּa֖ bּa֣'al bּe'amּa֑yv lehe֖chalּֽo׃

Edified Edition (EDE)He must not make himself ceremonially unclean as a leader among his people and so profane himself.

לֹ֥א יִטַּמָּ֖א בַּ֣עַל בְּעַמָּ֑יו לְהֵ֖חַלּֽוֹ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): loֽ'-yqrchh yiqerech֤u qarechah֙ bּero'shsha֔m upe'a֥t zeqana֖m lo֣ yegalּe֑chu ubi֨beshsara֔m lo֥ yishseret֖u shsaraֽtet׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Priests must not shave their heads or shave off the edges of their beards or cut their bodies.

לֹֽא־יקרחה יִקְרְח֤וּ קָרְחָה֙ בְּרֹאשָׁ֔ם וּפְאַ֥ת זְקָנָ֖ם לֹ֣א יְגַלֵּ֑חוּ וּבִ֨בְשָׂרָ֔ם לֹ֥א יִשְׂרְט֖וּ שָׂרָֽטֶת׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): qedoshshi֤ym yiheyu֙ le'lo֣heyhe֔m velo֣ yechalּel֔u shshe֖m 'eloheyhe֑m kּiy֩ 'et-'ishshּe֨y yehva֜h le֧chem 'eloheyhe֛m he֥m maqeriybi֖m veha֥yu qoֽdeshsh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)They must be holy to their God and must not profane the name of their God. Because they present the food offerings to the LORD, the food of their God, they are to be holy.

קְדֹשִׁ֤ים יִהְיוּ֙ לֵאלֹ֣הֵיהֶ֔ם וְלֹ֣א יְחַלְּל֔וּ שֵׁ֖ם אֱלֹהֵיהֶ֑ם כִּי֩ אֶת־אִשֵּׁ֨י יְהוָ֜ה לֶ֧חֶם אֱלֹהֵיהֶ֛ם הֵ֥ם מַקְרִיבִ֖ם וְהָ֥יוּ קֹֽדֶשׁ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ishshּa֨h zona֤h vachalalah֙ lo֣ yiqּa֔chu ve'ishshּa֛h gּerushsha֥h me'iyshsha֖hּ lo֣ yiqּa֑chu kּiֽy-qado֥shsh h֖u le'lohaֽyv׃

Edified Edition (EDE)They must not marry a woman defiled by prostitution or divorced from her husband, because the priest is holy to his God.

אִשָּׁ֨ה זֹנָ֤ה וַחֲלָלָה֙ לֹ֣א יִקָּ֔חוּ וְאִשָּׁ֛ה גְּרוּשָׁ֥ה מֵאִישָׁ֖הּ לֹ֣א יִקָּ֑חוּ כִּֽי־קָדֹ֥שׁ ה֖וּא לֵאלֹהָֽיו׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): veqidּashshetּ֔o kּiֽy-'et-le֥chem 'elohe֖yka h֣u maqeri֑yb qadoshsh֙ yiֽheyeh-lּa֔ke kּi֣y qad֔oshsh 'ani֥y yehva֖h meqadּishshekeֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Regard them as holy, because they offer up the food of your God. Be holy to them, because I the LORD am holy.

וְקִדַּשְׁתּ֔וֹ כִּֽי־אֶת־לֶ֥חֶם אֱלֹהֶ֖יךָ ה֣וּא מַקְרִ֑יב קָדֹשׁ֙ יִֽהְיֶה־לָּ֔ךְ כִּ֣י קָד֔וֹשׁ אֲנִ֥י יְהוָ֖ה מְקַדִּשְׁכֶֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ubat֙ 'i֣yshsh kּohe֔n kּi֥y teche֖l lizen֑ot 'et-'abi֨yha֙ hi֣y mechalּe֔let bּa'e֖shsh tּishsּareֽp׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)If a priest's daughter defiles herself by becoming a prostitute, she profanes her father; she must be burned in the fire.

וּבַת֙ אִ֣ישׁ כֹּהֵ֔ן כִּ֥י תֵחֵ֖ל לִזְנ֑וֹת אֶת־אָבִ֨יהָ֙ הִ֣יא מְחַלֶּ֔לֶת בָּאֵ֖שׁ תִּשָּׂרֵֽף׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): vehakּohen֩ hagּad֨ol me'echa֜yv 'aֽshsher-yutza֥q 'al-ro'shsh֣o ׀ shshe֤men hamּishshechah֙ umilּe֣ 'et-yad֔o lilebּo֖shsh 'et-habּegadi֑ym 'et-ro'shsho֙ lo֣ yipera֔ ubegada֖yv lo֥ yiperoֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)“‘The High Priest, the one among his brothers who has had the anointing oil poured on his head and who has been ordained to wear the priestly garments, must not let his hair become unkempt or tear his clothes.

וְהַכֹּהֵן֩ הַגָּד֨וֹל מֵאֶחָ֜יו אֲֽשֶׁר־יוּצַ֥ק עַל־רֹאשׁ֣וֹ ׀ שֶׁ֤מֶן הַמִּשְׁחָה֙ וּמִלֵּ֣א אֶת־יָד֔וֹ לִלְבֹּ֖שׁ אֶת־הַבְּגָדִ֑ים אֶת־רֹאשׁוֹ֙ לֹ֣א יִפְרָ֔ע וּבְגָדָ֖יו לֹ֥א יִפְרֹֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'a֛l kּal-napeshsho֥t me֖t lo֣ yabo֑ le'abi֥yv ule'imּ֖o lo֥ yitּamּaֽ'׃

Edified Edition (EDE)He must not go near a dead body. He must not make himself unclean, even for his father or mother,

וְעַ֛ל כָּל־נַפְשֹׁ֥ת מֵ֖ת לֹ֣א יָבֹ֑א לְאָבִ֥יו וּלְאִמּ֖וֹ לֹ֥א יִטַּמָּֽא׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): umin-hamּiqedּashsh֙ lo֣ yetze֔ velo֣ yechalּe֔l 'e֖t miqedּa֣shsh 'eloha֑yv kּi֡y ne֠zer shshe֣men mishshecha֧t 'eloha֛yv 'ala֖yv 'ani֥y yehvaֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)nor leave the sanctuary of his God or profane it, because he has been dedicated by the anointing oil of his God. I am the LORD.

וּמִן־הַמִּקְדָּשׁ֙ לֹ֣א יֵצֵ֔א וְלֹ֣א יְחַלֵּ֔ל אֵ֖ת מִקְדַּ֣שׁ אֱלֹהָ֑יו כִּ֡י נֵ֠זֶר שֶׁ֣מֶן מִשְׁחַ֧ת אֱלֹהָ֛יו עָלָ֖יו אֲנִ֥י יְהוָֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): veh֕u 'ishshּa֥h bibetule֖yha yiqּaֽch׃

Edified Edition (EDE)The woman he marries must be a virgin.

וְה֕וּא אִשָּׁ֥ה בִבְתוּלֶ֖יהָ יִקָּֽח׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): alemana֤h ugerushshah֙ vachalala֣h zona֔h 'et-'e֖lּeh lo֣ yiqּa֑ch kּi֛y 'im-bּetula֥h me'amּa֖yv yiqּa֥ch 'ishshּaֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)He must not marry a widow, a divorced woman, or a woman defiled by prostitution, but only a virgin from his own people,

אַלְמָנָ֤ה וּגְרוּשָׁה֙ וַחֲלָלָ֣ה זֹנָ֔ה אֶת־אֵ֖לֶּה לֹ֣א יִקָּ֑ח כִּ֛י אִם־בְּתוּלָ֥ה מֵעַמָּ֖יו יִקַּ֥ח אִשָּֽׁה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): veloֽ'-yechalּe֥l zare'֖o bּe'amּa֑yv kּi֛y 'ani֥y yehva֖h meqadּeshshֽo׃p

Edified Edition (EDE)so he will not defile his offspring among his people. I am the LORD, who makes him holy.

וְלֹֽא־יְחַלֵּ֥ל זַרְע֖וֹ בְּעַמָּ֑יו כִּ֛י אֲנִ֥י יְהוָ֖ה מְקַדְּשֽׁוֹ׃פ

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayedabּe֥r yehva֖h 'el-moshshe֥h lּe'moֽr׃

Edified Edition (EDE)The LORD said to Moses,

וַיְדַבֵּ֥ר יְהוָ֖ה אֶל־מֹשֶׁ֥ה לֵּאמֹֽר׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): dּabּe֥r 'eֽl-'aharo֖n le'mo֑r 'i֣yshsh miֽzּare'aka֞ ledorota֗m 'ashshe֨r yiheye֥h bo֙ m֔um lo֣ yiqera֔b lehaqeri֖yb le֥chem 'elohaֽyv׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"Say to Aaron: ‘For the generations to come none of your descendants who has a defect may come near to offer the food of his God.

דַּבֵּ֥ר אֶֽל־אַהֲרֹ֖ן לֵאמֹ֑ר אִ֣ישׁ מִֽזַּרְעֲךָ֞ לְדֹרֹתָ֗ם אֲשֶׁ֨ר יִהְיֶ֥ה בוֹ֙ מ֔וּם לֹ֣א יִקְרַ֔ב לְהַקְרִ֖יב לֶ֥חֶם אֱלֹהָֽיו׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): kּi֥y kal-'i֛yshsh 'ashsher-bּ֥o m֖um lo֣ yiqera֑b 'i֤yshsh 'iuer֙ '֣o pisּe֔cha '֥o charu֖m '֥o shsarֽu'a׃

Edified Edition (EDE)No man who has any defect may come near: no man who is blind or lame, disfigured or deformed;

כִּ֥י כָל־אִ֛ישׁ אֲשֶׁר־בּ֥וֹ מ֖וּם לֹ֣א יִקְרָ֑ב אִ֤ישׁ עִוֵּר֙ א֣וֹ פִסֵּ֔חַ א֥וֹ חָרֻ֖ם א֥וֹ שָׂרֽוּעַ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ֣o 'i֔yshsh 'ashsher-yiheye֥h b֖o shshe֣ber ra֑gel '֖o shshe֥ber yaֽd׃

Edified Edition (EDE)no man with a crippled foot or hand,

א֣וֹ אִ֔ישׁ אֲשֶׁר־יִהְיֶ֥ה ב֖וֹ שֶׁ֣בֶר רָ֑גֶל א֖וֹ שֶׁ֥בֶר יָֽד׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ֽo-gibּe֣n 'o-da֔q '֖o tּebalּu֣l bּe'eyn֑o '֤o garab֙ '֣o yalּe֔pet '֖o mer֥ocha 'aֽshsheke׃

Edified Edition (EDE)or who is a hunchback or a dwarf, or who has any eye defect, or who has festering or running sores or damaged testicles.

אֽוֹ־גִבֵּ֣ן אוֹ־דַ֔ק א֖וֹ תְּבַלֻּ֣ל בְּעֵינ֑וֹ א֤וֹ גָרָב֙ א֣וֹ יַלֶּ֔פֶת א֖וֹ מְר֥וֹחַ אָֽשֶׁךְ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): kּal-'i֞yshsh 'ashsher-bּ֣o m֗um mizּe֨ra'֙ 'aharo֣n hakּohe֔n lo֣ yigּa֔shsh lehaqeri֖yb 'et-'ishshּe֣y yehva֑h m֣um bּ֔o 'e֚t le֣chem 'eloha֔yv lo֥ yigּa֖shsh lehaqeriֽyb׃

Edified Edition (EDE)No descendant of Aaron the priest who has any defect is to come near to present the food offerings to the LORD.

כָּל־אִ֞ישׁ אֲשֶׁר־בּ֣וֹ מ֗וּם מִזֶּ֨רַע֙ אַהֲרֹ֣ן הַכֹּהֵ֔ן לֹ֣א יִגַּ֔שׁ לְהַקְרִ֖יב אֶת־אִשֵּׁ֣י יְהוָ֑ה מ֣וּם בּ֔וֹ אֵ֚ת לֶ֣חֶם אֱלֹהָ֔יו לֹ֥א יִגַּ֖שׁ לְהַקְרִֽיב׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): le֣chem 'eloha֔yv miqּadeshshe֖y haqּodashshi֑ym umin-haqּodashshi֖ym yo'keֽl׃

Edified Edition (EDE)He may eat the most holy food of his God, as well as the holy food;

לֶ֣חֶם אֱלֹהָ֔יו מִקָּדְשֵׁ֖י הַקֳּדָשִׁ֑ים וּמִן־הַקֳּדָשִׁ֖ים יֹאכֵֽל׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): a֣ke 'el-hapּaro֜ket lo֣ yabo֗ ve'el-hamּizebּe֛cha lo֥ yigּa֖shsh kּiֽy-m֣um bּ֑o velo֤ yechalּel֙ 'et-miqedּashsha֔y kּi֛y 'ani֥y yehva֖h meqadּeshshaֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Because of his defect, he must not go near the curtain or approach the altar, and so profane my sanctuary. I am the LORD, who makes them holy.’"

אַ֣ךְ אֶל־הַפָּרֹ֜כֶת לֹ֣א יָבֹ֗א וְאֶל־הַמִּזְבֵּ֛חַ לֹ֥א יִגַּ֖שׁ כִּֽי־מ֣וּם בּ֑וֹ וְלֹ֤א יְחַלֵּל֙ אֶת־מִקְדָּשַׁ֔י כִּ֛י אֲנִ֥י יְהוָ֖ה מְקַדְּשָֽׁם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayedabּe֣r moshshe֔h 'eֽl-'aharo֖n ve'el-bּana֑yv ve'eֽl-kּal-bּene֖y yishsera'eֽl׃p

Edified Edition (EDE)So Moses spoke this to Aaron and his sons and to all the Israelites.

וַיְדַבֵּ֣ר מֹשֶׁ֔ה אֶֽל־אַהֲרֹ֖ן וְאֶל־בָּנָ֑יו וְאֶֽל־כָּל־בְּנֵ֖י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃פ
