Chapter 25
1
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayedabּe֤r yehvah֙ 'el-moshshe֔h bּeha֥r siyna֖y le'moֽr׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The LORD said to Moses at Mount Sinai,

וַיְדַבֵּ֤ר יְהוָה֙ אֶל־מֹשֶׁ֔ה בְּהַ֥ר סִינַ֖י לֵאמֹֽר׃

2
Phonetic (Hebrew): dּabּe֞r 'el-bּene֤y yishsera'el֙ ve'amaretּa֣ 'alehe֔m kּi֤y tabo֨'u֙ 'el-ha'a֔retz 'ashshe֥r 'ani֖y note֣n lake֑m veshshabeta֣h ha'a֔retz shshabּa֖t layhvaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"Speak to the Israelites and say to them: ‘When you enter the land I am going to give you, the land itself must observe a sabbath to the LORD.

דַּבֵּ֞ר אֶל־בְּנֵ֤י יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ וְאָמַרְתָּ֣ אֲלֵהֶ֔ם כִּ֤י תָבֹ֨אוּ֙ אֶל־הָאָ֔רֶץ אֲשֶׁ֥ר אֲנִ֖י נֹתֵ֣ן לָכֶ֑ם וְשָׁבְתָ֣ה הָאָ֔רֶץ שַׁבָּ֖ת לַיהוָֽה׃

3
Phonetic (Hebrew): shshe֤shsh shshaniym֙ tּizera֣ shsade֔ka veshshe֥shsh shshani֖ym tּizemo֣r kּareme֑ka ve'asapetּa֖ 'et-tּebu'ataֽhּ׃
Edified Edition (EDE)For six years sow your fields, and for six years prune your vineyards and gather their crops.

שֵׁ֤שׁ שָׁנִים֙ תִּזְרַ֣ע שָׂדֶ֔ךָ וְשֵׁ֥שׁ שָׁנִ֖ים תִּזְמֹ֣ר כַּרְמֶ֑ךָ וְאָסַפְתָּ֖ אֶת־תְּבוּאָתָֽהּ׃

4
Phonetic (Hebrew): ubashshּana֣h hashshּebiy'i֗t shshabּa֤t shshabּaton֙ yiheye֣h la'a֔retz shshabּa֖t layhva֑h shsaֽdeka֙ lo֣ tizera֔ vekaremeka֖ lo֥ tizemoֽr׃
Edified Edition (EDE)But in the seventh year the land is to have a year of sabbath rest, a sabbath to the LORD. Do not sow your fields or prune your vineyards.

וּבַשָּׁנָ֣ה הַשְּׁבִיעִ֗ת שַׁבַּ֤ת שַׁבָּתוֹן֙ יִהְיֶ֣ה לָאָ֔רֶץ שַׁבָּ֖ת לַיהוָ֑ה שָֽׂדְךָ֙ לֹ֣א תִזְרָ֔ע וְכַרְמְךָ֖ לֹ֥א תִזְמֹֽר׃

5
Phonetic (Hebrew): e֣t sepi֤ycha qetziֽyreka֙ lo֣ tiqetz֔or ve'et-'inּebe֥y neziyre֖ka lo֣ tibetzo֑r shshena֥t shshabּat֖on yiheye֥h la'aֽretz׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Do not reap what grows of itself or harvest the grapes of your untended vines. The land is to have a year of rest.

אֵ֣ת סְפִ֤יחַ קְצִֽירְךָ֙ לֹ֣א תִקְצ֔וֹר וְאֶת־עִנְּבֵ֥י נְזִירֶ֖ךָ לֹ֣א תִבְצֹ֑ר שְׁנַ֥ת שַׁבָּת֖וֹן יִהְיֶ֥ה לָאָֽרֶץ׃

6
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve֠hayetah shshabּa֨t ha'a֤retz lakem֙ le'akela֔h leka֖ ule'abedּeka֣ vela'amate֑ka velishsekiֽyreka֙ uletoshsha֣beka֔ hagּari֖ym 'imּaֽke׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Whatever the land yields during the sabbath year will be food for you, for yourself, your male and female servants, and the hired worker and temporary resident who live among you,

וְ֠הָיְתָה שַׁבַּ֨ת הָאָ֤רֶץ לָכֶם֙ לְאָכְלָ֔ה לְךָ֖ וּלְעַבְדְּךָ֣ וְלַאֲמָתֶ֑ךָ וְלִשְׂכִֽירְךָ֙ וּלְתוֹשָׁ֣בְךָ֔ הַגָּרִ֖ים עִמָּֽךְ׃

7
Phonetic (Hebrew): veli֨behemetּeka֔ velaֽchayּa֖h 'ashshe֣r bּe'aretze֑ka tּiheye֥h kal-tּebu'ata֖hּ le'ekoֽl׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)as well as for your livestock and the wild animals in your land. Whatever the land produces may be eaten.

וְלִ֨בְהֶמְתְּךָ֔ וְלַֽחַיָּ֖ה אֲשֶׁ֣ר בְּאַרְצֶ֑ךָ תִּהְיֶ֥ה כָל־תְּבוּאָתָ֖הּ לֶאֱכֹֽל׃ס

8
Phonetic (Hebrew): vesaparetּa֣ leka֗ shshe֚ba shshabּeto֣t shshani֔ym shshe֥ba shshani֖ym shshe֣ba pּe'ami֑ym vehay֣u leka֗ yemey֙ shshe֚ba shshabּeto֣t hashshּani֔ym tּe֥shsha ve'arebּa'i֖ym shshanaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)“‘Count off seven sabbath years, seven times seven years, so that the seven sabbath years amount to a period of forty-nine years.

וְסָפַרְתָּ֣ לְךָ֗ שֶׁ֚בַע שַׁבְּתֹ֣ת שָׁנִ֔ים שֶׁ֥בַע שָׁנִ֖ים שֶׁ֣בַע פְּעָמִ֑ים וְהָי֣וּ לְךָ֗ יְמֵי֙ שֶׁ֚בַע שַׁבְּתֹ֣ת הַשָּׁנִ֔ים תֵּ֥שַׁע וְאַרְבָּעִ֖ים שָׁנָֽה׃

9
Phonetic (Hebrew): vehֽa'abaretּa֞ shshopa֤r tּeru'ah֙ bּacho֣deshsh hashshּebi'i֔y bּe'ashs֖or lacho֑deshsh bּeyom֙ hakּipּuri֔ym tּa'abi֥yru shshopa֖r bּekal-'aretzekeֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then have the trumpet sounded everywhere on the tenth day of the seventh month; on the Day of Atonement sound the trumpet throughout your land.

וְהַֽעֲבַרְתָּ֞ שׁוֹפַ֤ר תְּרוּעָה֙ בַּחֹ֣דֶשׁ הַשְּׁבִעִ֔י בֶּעָשׂ֖וֹר לַחֹ֑דֶשׁ בְּיוֹם֙ הַכִּפֻּרִ֔ים תַּעֲבִ֥ירוּ שׁוֹפָ֖ר בְּכָל־אַרְצְכֶֽם׃

10
Phonetic (Hebrew): veqidּashshetּe֗m 'e֣t shshena֤t hachamishshּiym֙ shshana֔h uqera'te֥m dּer֛or bּa'a֖retz lekal-yoshshebe֑yha yobe֥l hiv'֙ tּiheye֣h lake֔m veshshabetּe֗m 'i֚yshsh 'el-'achuzּat֔o ve'i֥yshsh 'el-mishshepּachetּ֖o tּashshuֽbu׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Consecrate the fiftieth year and proclaim liberty throughout the land to all its inhabitants. It shall be a jubilee [1] for you; each of you is to return to your family property and to your own clan.

וְקִדַּשְׁתֶּ֗ם אֵ֣ת שְׁנַ֤ת הַחֲמִשִּׁים֙ שָׁנָ֔ה וּקְרָאתֶ֥ם דְּר֛וֹר בָּאָ֖רֶץ לְכָל־יֹשְׁבֶ֑יהָ יוֹבֵ֥ל הִוא֙ תִּהְיֶ֣ה לָכֶ֔ם וְשַׁבְתֶּ֗ם אִ֚ישׁ אֶל־אֲחֻזָּת֔וֹ וְאִ֥ישׁ אֶל־מִשְׁפַּחְתּ֖וֹ תָּשֻֽׁבוּ׃

11
Phonetic (Hebrew): yobe֣l hi֗v shshena֛t hachamishshּi֥ym shshana֖h tּiheye֣h lake֑m lo֣ tizera֔'u velo֤ tiqetzeru֙ 'et-sepiyche֔yha velo֥ tibetzer֖u 'et-nezireֽyha׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The fiftieth year shall be a jubilee for you; do not sow and do not reap what grows of itself or harvest the untended vines.

יוֹבֵ֣ל הִ֗וא שְׁנַ֛ת הַחֲמִשִּׁ֥ים שָׁנָ֖ה תִּהְיֶ֣ה לָכֶ֑ם לֹ֣א תִזְרָ֔עוּ וְלֹ֤א תִקְצְרוּ֙ אֶת־סְפִיחֶ֔יהָ וְלֹ֥א תִבְצְר֖וּ אֶת־נְזִרֶֽיהָ׃

12
Phonetic (Hebrew): kּi֚y yobe֣l hi֔v qo֖deshsh tּiheye֣h lake֑m min-ha֨shsּade֔h tּo'kel֖u 'et-tּebu'ataֽhּ׃
Edified Edition (EDE)For it is a jubilee and is to be holy for you; eat only what is taken directly from the fields.

כִּ֚י יוֹבֵ֣ל הִ֔וא קֹ֖דֶשׁ תִּהְיֶ֣ה לָכֶ֑ם מִן־הַ֨שָּׂדֶ֔ה תֹּאכְל֖וּ אֶת־תְּבוּאָתָֽהּ׃

13
Phonetic (Hebrew): bּishshena֥t hayּobe֖l hazּo֑'t tּashshu֕bu 'i֖yshsh 'el-'achuzּatֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)“‘In this Year of Jubilee everyone is to return to their own property.

בִּשְׁנַ֥ת הַיּוֹבֵ֖ל הַזֹּ֑את תָּשֻׁ֕בוּ אִ֖ישׁ אֶל־אֲחֻזָּתֽוֹ׃

14
Phonetic (Hebrew): vekiֽy-timekּer֤u mimekּar֙ la'amiyte֔ka '֥o qano֖h miyּa֣d 'amiyte֑ka 'al-tּon֖u 'i֥yshsh 'et-'achiֽyv׃
Edified Edition (EDE)“‘If you sell land to any of your own people or buy land from them, do not take advantage of each other.

וְכִֽי־תִמְכְּר֤וּ מִמְכָּר֙ לַעֲמִיתֶ֔ךָ א֥וֹ קָנֹ֖ה מִיַּ֣ד עֲמִיתֶ֑ךָ אַל־תּוֹנ֖וּ אִ֥ישׁ אֶת־אָחִֽיו׃

15
Phonetic (Hebrew): bּemisepּa֤r shshaniym֙ 'acha֣r hayּobe֔l tּiqene֖h me'e֣t 'amiyte֑ka bּemisepּa֥r shsheneֽy-tebu'o֖t yimekּar-laֽke׃
Edified Edition (EDE)You are to buy from your own people on the basis of the number of years since the Jubilee. And they are to sell to you on the basis of the number of years left for harvesting crops.

בְּמִסְפַּ֤ר שָׁנִים֙ אַחַ֣ר הַיּוֹבֵ֔ל תִּקְנֶ֖ה מֵאֵ֣ת עֲמִיתֶ֑ךָ בְּמִסְפַּ֥ר שְׁנֵֽי־תְבוּאֹ֖ת יִמְכָּר־לָֽךְ׃

16
Phonetic (Hebrew): lepi֣y ׀ ro֣b hashshּani֗ym tּarebּeh֙ miqenat֔o ulepiy֙ me'o֣t hashshּani֔ym tּame'i֖yt miqenat֑o kּi֚y misepּa֣r tּebu'o֔t h֥u moke֖r laֽke׃
Edified Edition (EDE)When the years are many, you are to increase the price, and when the years are few, you are to decrease the price, because what is really being sold to you is the number of crops.

לְפִ֣י ׀ רֹ֣ב הַשָּׁנִ֗ים תַּרְבֶּה֙ מִקְנָת֔וֹ וּלְפִי֙ מְעֹ֣ט הַשָּׁנִ֔ים תַּמְעִ֖יט מִקְנָת֑וֹ כִּ֚י מִסְפַּ֣ר תְּבוּאֹ֔ת ה֥וּא מֹכֵ֖ר לָֽךְ׃

17
Phonetic (Hebrew): velo֤ tonu֙ 'i֣yshsh 'et-'amiyt֔o veyare֖'ta meֽ'elohe֑yka kּi֛y 'ani֥y yehova֖h 'eloheykeֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Do not take advantage of each other, but fear your God. I am the LORD your God.

וְלֹ֤א תוֹנוּ֙ אִ֣ישׁ אֶת־עֲמִית֔וֹ וְיָרֵ֖אתָ מֵֽאֱלֹהֶ֑יךָ כִּ֛י אֲנִ֥י יְהֹוָ֖ה אֱלֹהֵיכֶֽם׃

18
Phonetic (Hebrew): va'ashsiytem֙ 'et-chuqּota֔y ve'et-mishshepּata֥y tּishshemer֖u va'ashsiyte֣m 'ota֑m viֽyshshabetּe֥m 'al-ha'a֖retz labeֽtach׃
Edified Edition (EDE)“‘Follow my decrees and be careful to obey my laws, and you will live safely in the land.

וַעֲשִׂיתֶם֙ אֶת־חֻקֹּתַ֔י וְאֶת־מִשְׁפָּטַ֥י תִּשְׁמְר֖וּ וַעֲשִׂיתֶ֣ם אֹתָ֑ם וִֽישַׁבְתֶּ֥ם עַל־הָאָ֖רֶץ לָבֶֽטַח׃

19
Phonetic (Hebrew): venatena֤h ha'a֨retz֙ pּireya֔hּ va'akaletּe֖m lashso֑ba viֽyshshabetּe֥m labe֖tach 'aleֽyha׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then the land will yield its fruit, and you will eat your fill and live there in safety.

וְנָתְנָ֤ה הָאָ֨רֶץ֙ פִּרְיָ֔הּ וַאֲכַלְתֶּ֖ם לָשֹׂ֑בַע וִֽישַׁבְתֶּ֥ם לָבֶ֖טַח עָלֶֽיהָ׃

20
Phonetic (Hebrew): veki֣y to'mer֔u mah-nּo'ka֤֖l bּashshּana֣h hashshּebiy'i֑t he֚n lo֣ nizera֔ velo֥ ne'eso֖p 'et-tּebu'ateֽnu׃
Edified Edition (EDE)You may ask, “What will we eat in the seventh year if we do not plant or harvest our crops?”

וְכִ֣י תֹאמְר֔וּ מַה־נֹּאכַ֤֖ל בַּשָּׁנָ֣ה הַשְּׁבִיעִ֑ת הֵ֚ן לֹ֣א נִזְרָ֔ע וְלֹ֥א נֶאֱסֹ֖ף אֶת־תְּבוּאָתֵֽנוּ׃

21
Phonetic (Hebrew): vetziui֤ytiy 'et-bּirekatiy֙ lake֔m bּashshּana֖h hashshּishshּi֑yt ve'ashsat֙ 'et-hatּebu'a֔h lishshelo֖shsh hashshּaniֽym׃
Edified Edition (EDE)I will send you such a blessing in the sixth year that the land will yield enough for three years.

וְצִוִּ֤יתִי אֶת־בִּרְכָתִי֙ לָכֶ֔ם בַּשָּׁנָ֖ה הַשִּׁשִּׁ֑ית וְעָשָׂת֙ אֶת־הַתְּבוּאָ֔ה לִשְׁלֹ֖שׁ הַשָּׁנִֽים׃

22
Phonetic (Hebrew): uzera'etּe֗m 'e֚t hashshּana֣h hashshּemiyni֔t va'akaletּe֖m min-hatּebu'a֣h yashsha֑n 'a֣d ׀ hashshּana֣h hatּeshshiy'i֗t 'ad-bּo'֙ tּeb֣u'ata֔hּ tּo'kel֖u yashshaֽn׃
Edified Edition (EDE)While you plant during the eighth year, you will eat from the old crop and will continue to eat from it until the harvest of the ninth year comes in.

וּזְרַעְתֶּ֗ם אֵ֚ת הַשָּׁנָ֣ה הַשְּׁמִינִ֔ת וַאֲכַלְתֶּ֖ם מִן־הַתְּבוּאָ֣ה יָשָׁ֑ן עַ֣ד ׀ הַשָּׁנָ֣ה הַתְּשִׁיעִ֗ת עַד־בּוֹא֙ תְּב֣וּאָתָ֔הּ תֹּאכְל֖וּ יָשָֽׁן׃

23
Phonetic (Hebrew): veha'a֗retz lo֤ timּaker֙ litzemitu֔t kּiy-li֖y ha'a֑retz kּiֽy-geri֧ym vetoshshabi֛ym 'atּe֖m 'imּadiֽy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)“‘The land must not be sold permanently, because the land is mine and you reside in my land as foreigners and strangers.

וְהָאָ֗רֶץ לֹ֤א תִמָּכֵר֙ לִצְמִתֻ֔ת כִּי־לִ֖י הָאָ֑רֶץ כִּֽי־גֵרִ֧ים וְתוֹשָׁבִ֛ים אַתֶּ֖ם עִמָּדִֽי׃

24
Phonetic (Hebrew): ubeko֖l 'e֣retz 'achuzּateke֑m gּe'ulּa֖h tּitּen֥u la'aֽretz׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)“‘Throughout the land that you hold as a possession, you must provide for the redemption of the land.

וּבְכֹ֖ל אֶ֣רֶץ אֲחֻזַּתְכֶ֑ם גְּאֻלָּ֖ה תִּתְּנ֥וּ לָאָֽרֶץ׃ס

25
Phonetic (Hebrew): kּiֽy-yam֣uke 'achi֔yka umaka֖r me'achuzּat֑o uba֤ goֽ'alo֙ haqּaro֣b 'ela֔yv vega'a֕l 'e֖t mimekּa֥r 'achiֽyv׃
Edified Edition (EDE)“‘If one of your fellow Israelites becomes poor and sells some of their property, their nearest relative is to come and redeem what they have sold.

כִּֽי־יָמ֣וּךְ אָחִ֔יךָ וּמָכַ֖ר מֵאֲחֻזָּת֑וֹ וּבָ֤א גֹֽאֲלוֹ֙ הַקָּרֹ֣ב אֵלָ֔יו וְגָאַ֕ל אֵ֖ת מִמְכַּ֥ר אָחִֽיו׃

26
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'i֕yshsh kּi֛y lo֥ yiֽheyeh-lּ֖o gּo'e֑l vehishsּi֣ygah yad֔o umatza֖ kּede֥y ge'ulּatֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)If, however, there is no one to redeem it for them but later they prosper and acquire sufficient means to redeem it themselves,

וְאִ֕ישׁ כִּ֛י לֹ֥א יִֽהְיֶה־לּ֖וֹ גֹּאֵ֑ל וְהִשִּׂ֣יגָה יָד֔וֹ וּמָצָ֖א כְּדֵ֥י גְאֻלָּתֽוֹ׃

27
Phonetic (Hebrew): vechishshּab֙ 'et-shshene֣y mimekּar֔o veheshshiyb֙ 'et-ha֣'ode֔p la'i֖yshsh 'ashshe֣r maֽkar-l֑o veshsha֖b la'achuzּatֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)they are to determine the value for the years since they sold it and refund the balance to the person to whom they sold it; they can then go back to their own property.

וְחִשַּׁב֙ אֶת־שְׁנֵ֣י מִמְכָּר֔וֹ וְהֵשִׁיב֙ אֶת־הָ֣עֹדֵ֔ף לָאִ֖ישׁ אֲשֶׁ֣ר מָֽכַר־ל֑וֹ וְשָׁ֖ב לַאֲחֻזָּתֽוֹ׃

28
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'i֨m loֽ'-mֽatze'a֜h yad֗o dּey֮ hashshi֣yb lo֒ vehaya֣h mimekּar֗o bּeyad֙ haqּone֣h 'ot֔o 'a֖d shshena֣t hayּobe֑l veyatza'֙ bּayּobe֔l veshsha֖b la'achuzּatֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)But if they do not acquire the means to pay, what was sold will remain in the possession of the buyer until the Year of Jubilee. It will be returned in the Jubilee, and they can then go back to their property.

וְאִ֨ם לֹֽא־מָֽצְאָ֜ה יָד֗וֹ דֵּי֮ הָשִׁ֣יב לוֹ֒ וְהָיָ֣ה מִמְכָּר֗וֹ בְּיַד֙ הַקֹּנֶ֣ה אֹת֔וֹ עַ֖ד שְׁנַ֣ת הַיּוֹבֵ֑ל וְיָצָא֙ בַּיֹּבֵ֔ל וְשָׁ֖ב לַאֲחֻזָּתֽוֹ׃

29
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'i֗yshsh kּiֽy-yimekּo֤r bּeyt-moshshab֙ 'i֣yr choma֔h vehayetah֙ gּe'ulּat֔o 'ad-tּo֖m shshena֣t mimekּar֑o yami֖ym tּiheye֥h ge'ulּatֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)“‘If anyone sells a house in a walled city, they retain the right of redemption a full year after its sale. During that time they may redeem it.

וְאִ֗ישׁ כִּֽי־יִמְכֹּ֤ר בֵּית־מוֹשַׁב֙ עִ֣יר חוֹמָ֔ה וְהָיְתָה֙ גְּאֻלָּת֔וֹ עַד־תֹּ֖ם שְׁנַ֣ת מִמְכָּר֑וֹ יָמִ֖ים תִּהְיֶ֥ה גְאֻלָּתֽוֹ׃

30
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'i֣m loֽ'-yigּa'e֗l 'ad-melo֣'t lo֮ shshana֣h temiymah֒ ve֠qam habּa֨yit 'ashsher-bּa'i֜yr 'ashsher-l l֣o choma֗h latzּemiytu֛t laqּone֥h 'ot֖o ledorota֑yv lo֥ yetze֖ bּayּobeֽl׃
Edified Edition (EDE)If it is not redeemed by the time a full year has passed, it will belong permanently to the buyer and their descendants. It will not be released in the Jubilee.

וְאִ֣ם לֹֽא־יִגָּאֵ֗ל עַד־מְלֹ֣את לוֹ֮ שָׁנָ֣ה תְמִימָה֒ וְ֠קָם הַבַּ֨יִת אֲשֶׁר־בָּעִ֜יר אֲשֶׁר־לא ל֣וֹ חֹמָ֗ה לַצְּמִיתֻ֛ת לַקֹּנֶ֥ה אֹת֖וֹ לְדֹרֹתָ֑יו לֹ֥א יֵצֵ֖א בַּיֹּבֵֽל׃

31
Phonetic (Hebrew): ubatּe֣y hachatzeri֗ym 'ashshe֨r 'eyn-lahe֤m chomah֙ sabi֔yb 'al-shsede֥h ha'a֖retz yechashshe֑b gּe'ulּah֙ tּiheyeh-lּ֔o ubayּobe֖l yetzeֽ'׃
Edified Edition (EDE)But houses in villages without walls around them will be treated like open fields. They can be redeemed, and they must be released in the Jubilee.

וּבָתֵּ֣י הַחֲצֵרִ֗ים אֲשֶׁ֨ר אֵין־לָהֶ֤ם חֹמָה֙ סָבִ֔יב עַל־שְׂדֵ֥ה הָאָ֖רֶץ יֵחָשֵׁ֑ב גְּאֻלָּה֙ תִּהְיֶה־לּ֔וֹ וּבַיֹּבֵ֖ל יֵצֵֽא׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'arey֙ haleviyּi֔m bּatּe֖y 'are֣y 'achuzּata֑m gּe'ulּa֥t 'ola֖m tּiheye֥h laleviyּiֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)“‘The Levites always have the right to redeem their houses in the Levitical towns, which are their possession.

וְעָרֵי֙ הַלְוִיִּ֔ם בָּתֵּ֖י עָרֵ֣י אֲחֻזָּתָ֑ם גְּאֻלַּ֥ת עוֹלָ֖ם תִּהְיֶ֥ה לַלְוִיִּֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): va'ashshe֤r yige'al֙ min-haleviyּi֔m veyatza֧ mimekּar-bּa֛yit ve'i֥yr 'achuzּat֖o bּayּobe֑l kּi֣y batּe֞y 'are֣y haleviyּi֗m hi֚v 'achuzּata֔m bּet֖oke bּene֥y yishsera'eֽl׃
Edified Edition (EDE)If the property of a Levite is not redeemed, the house he sold in the town he possesses must still be released in the Jubilee, because the houses in the towns of the Levites are their possession among the Israelites.

וַאֲשֶׁ֤ר יִגְאַל֙ מִן־הַלְוִיִּ֔ם וְיָצָ֧א מִמְכַּר־בַּ֛יִת וְעִ֥יר אֲחֻזָּת֖וֹ בַּיֹּבֵ֑ל כִּ֣י בָתֵּ֞י עָרֵ֣י הַלְוִיִּ֗ם הִ֚וא אֲחֻזָּתָ֔ם בְּת֖וֹךְ בְּנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): uֽshsede֛h migera֥shsh 'areyhe֖m lo֣ yimּake֑r kּiֽy-'achuzּa֥t 'ola֛m h֖u laheֽm׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)But the pasture-lands belonging to their towns must not be sold; they are their permanent possession.

וּֽשְׂדֵ֛ה מִגְרַ֥שׁ עָרֵיהֶ֖ם לֹ֣א יִמָּכֵ֑ר כִּֽי־אֲחֻזַּ֥ת עוֹלָ֛ם ה֖וּא לָהֶֽם׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): vekiֽy-yam֣uke 'achi֔yka uma֥tah yad֖o 'imּa֑ke veheֽcheza֣qetּa bּ֔o gּe֧r vetoshsha֛b vacha֖y 'imּaֽke׃
Edified Edition (EDE)“‘If any of your fellow Israelites become poor and are unable to support themselves among you, help them as you would a foreigner or stranger, so they can continue to live among you.

וְכִֽי־יָמ֣וּךְ אָחִ֔יךָ וּמָ֥טָה יָד֖וֹ עִמָּ֑ךְ וְהֶֽחֱזַ֣קְתָּ בּ֔וֹ גֵּ֧ר וְתוֹשָׁ֛ב וָחַ֖י עִמָּֽךְ׃

36
Phonetic (Hebrew): al-tּiqּa֤ch meֽ'itּo֙ ne֣shsheke vetarebּi֔yt veyare֖'ta mֽe'elohe֑yka veche֥y 'achi֖yka 'imּaֽke׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Do not take interest or any profit from them, but fear your God, so that they may continue to live among you.

אַל־תִּקַּ֤ח מֵֽאִתּוֹ֙ נֶ֣שֶׁךְ וְתַרְבִּ֔ית וְיָרֵ֖אתָ מֵֽאֱלֹהֶ֑יךָ וְחֵ֥י אָחִ֖יךָ עִמָּֽךְ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): e֨t-kּasepּeka֔ loֽ'-titּe֥n l֖o bּene֑shsheke ubemarebּi֖yt lo'-titּe֥n 'akeleֽka׃
Edified Edition (EDE)You must not lend them money at interest or sell them food at a profit.

אֶ֨ת־כַּסְפְּךָ֔ לֹֽא־תִתֵּ֥ן ל֖וֹ בְּנֶ֑שֶׁךְ וּבְמַרְבִּ֖ית לֹא־תִתֵּ֥ן אָכְלֶֽךָ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ani֗y yehvah֙ 'elo֣heyke֔m 'ashsher-hotze֥'tiy 'eteke֖m me'e֣retz mitzera֑yim late֤t lakem֙ 'et-'e֣retz kּena֔'an lihey֥ot lake֖m le'lohiֽym׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt to give you the land of Canaan and to be your God.

אֲנִ֗י יְהוָה֙ אֱלֹ֣הֵיכֶ֔ם אֲשֶׁר־הוֹצֵ֥אתִי אֶתְכֶ֖ם מֵאֶ֣רֶץ מִצְרָ֑יִם לָתֵ֤ת לָכֶם֙ אֶת־אֶ֣רֶץ כְּנַ֔עַן לִהְי֥וֹת לָכֶ֖ם לֵאלֹהִֽים׃ס

Edified Edition (EDE)“‘If any of your fellow Israelites become poor and sell themselves to you, do not make them work as slaves.

וְכִֽי־יָמ֥וּךְ אָחִ֛יךָ עִמָּ֖ךְ וְנִמְכַּר־לָ֑ךְ לֹא־תַעֲבֹ֥ד בּ֖וֹ עֲבֹ֥דַת עָֽבֶד׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): kּeshsaki֥yr kּetoshsha֖b yiheye֣h 'imּa֑ke 'ad-shshena֥t hayּobe֖l ya'abo֥d 'imּaֽke׃
Edified Edition (EDE)They are to be treated as hired workers or temporary residents among you; they are to work for you until the Year of Jubilee.

כְּשָׂכִ֥יר כְּתוֹשָׁ֖ב יִהְיֶ֣ה עִמָּ֑ךְ עַד־שְׁנַ֥ת הַיֹּבֵ֖ל יַעֲבֹ֥ד עִמָּֽךְ׃

41
Phonetic (Hebrew): veyatza'֙ meֽ'imּa֔ke h֖u ubana֣yv 'imּ֑o veshshab֙ 'el-mishshepּachetּ֔o ve'el-'achuzּa֥t 'abota֖yv yashshֽub׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then they and their children are to be released, and they will go back to their own clans and to the property of their ancestors.

וְיָצָא֙ מֵֽעִמָּ֔ךְ ה֖וּא וּבָנָ֣יו עִמּ֑וֹ וְשָׁב֙ אֶל־מִשְׁפַּחְתּ֔וֹ וְאֶל־אֲחֻזַּ֥ת אֲבֹתָ֖יו יָשֽׁוּב׃

42
Phonetic (Hebrew): kּiֽy-'abada֣y he֔m 'ashsher-hotze֥'tiy 'ota֖m me'e֣retz mitzera֑yim lo֥ yimּaker֖u mimekּe֥ret 'aֽbed׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Because the Israelites are my servants, whom I brought out of Egypt, they must not be sold as slaves.

כִּֽי־עֲבָדַ֣י הֵ֔ם אֲשֶׁר־הוֹצֵ֥אתִי אֹתָ֖ם מֵאֶ֣רֶץ מִצְרָ֑יִם לֹ֥א יִמָּכְר֖וּ מִמְכֶּ֥רֶת עָֽבֶד׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): lo'-tiredּe֥h b֖o bּepa֑reke veyare֖'ta me'eloheֽyka׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Do not rule over them ruthlessly, but fear your God.

לֹא־תִרְדֶּ֥ה ב֖וֹ בְּפָ֑רֶךְ וְיָרֵ֖אתָ מֵאֱלֹהֶֽיךָ׃

44
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'abedּeka֥ va'amateka֖ 'ashshe֣r yiheyu-la֑ke me'e֣t hagּoyi֗m 'ashsher֙ sebiybo֣teyke֔m mehe֥m tּiqen֖u 'e֥bed ve'amaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)“‘Your male and female slaves are to come from the nations around you; from them you may buy slaves.

וְעַבְדְּךָ֥ וַאֲמָתְךָ֖ אֲשֶׁ֣ר יִהְיוּ־לָ֑ךְ מֵאֵ֣ת הַגּוֹיִ֗ם אֲשֶׁר֙ סְבִיבֹ֣תֵיכֶ֔ם מֵהֶ֥ם תִּקְנ֖וּ עֶ֥בֶד וְאָמָֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve֠gam mibּene֨y hatּoshshabi֜ym hagּari֤ym 'imּakem֙ mehe֣m tּiqen֔u umimּishshepּachetּam֙ 'ashshe֣r 'imּake֔m 'ashshe֥r holi֖ydu bּe'aretzeke֑m vehay֥u lake֖m lֽa'achuzּaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)You may also buy some of the temporary residents living among you and members of their clans born in your country, and they will become your property.

וְ֠גַם מִבְּנֵ֨י הַתּוֹשָׁבִ֜ים הַגָּרִ֤ים עִמָּכֶם֙ מֵהֶ֣ם תִּקְנ֔וּ וּמִמִּשְׁפַּחְתָּם֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר עִמָּכֶ֔ם אֲשֶׁ֥ר הוֹלִ֖ידוּ בְּאַרְצְכֶ֑ם וְהָי֥וּ לָכֶ֖ם לַֽאֲחֻזָּֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vehitenachaletּe֨m 'ota֜m libeneyke֤m 'achareykem֙ lare֣shshet 'achuzּa֔h le'ola֖m bּahe֣m tּa'abo֑du ube'a֨cheyke֤m bּeneֽy-yishsera'el֙ 'i֣yshsh bּe'achi֔yv lo'-tiredּe֥h b֖o bּepaֽreke׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)You can bequeath them to your children as inherited property and can make them slaves for life, but you must not rule over your fellow Israelites ruthlessly.

וְהִתְנַחֲלְתֶּ֨ם אֹתָ֜ם לִבְנֵיכֶ֤ם אַחֲרֵיכֶם֙ לָרֶ֣שֶׁת אֲחֻזָּ֔ה לְעֹלָ֖ם בָּהֶ֣ם תַּעֲבֹ֑דוּ וּבְאַ֨חֵיכֶ֤ם בְּנֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ אִ֣ישׁ בְּאָחִ֔יו לֹא־תִרְדֶּ֥ה ב֖וֹ בְּפָֽרֶךְ׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): veki֣y tashsּi֗yg ya֣d gּe֤r vetoshshab֙ 'imּa֔ke uma֥ke 'achi֖yka 'imּ֑o venimekּa֗r lege֤r tּoshshab֙ 'imּa֔ke '֥o le'e֖qer mishshepּa֥chat gּeֽr׃
Edified Edition (EDE)“‘If a foreigner residing among you becomes rich and a fellow Israelite becomes poor and sells himself to the foreigner or to a member of the foreigner’s clan,

וְכִ֣י תַשִּׂ֗יג יַ֣ד גֵּ֤ר וְתוֹשָׁב֙ עִמָּ֔ךְ וּמָ֥ךְ אָחִ֖יךָ עִמּ֑וֹ וְנִמְכַּ֗ר לְגֵ֤ר תּוֹשָׁב֙ עִמָּ֔ךְ א֥וֹ לְעֵ֖קֶר מִשְׁפַּ֥חַת גֵּֽר׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): achare֣y nimekּa֔r gּe'ulּa֖h tּiheyeh-lּ֑o 'echa֥d me'echa֖yv yige'aleֽnּu׃
Edified Edition (EDE)he retains the right of redemption after he has sold himself. One of his relatives may redeem him:

אַחֲרֵ֣י נִמְכַּ֔ר גְּאֻלָּ֖ה תִּהְיֶה־לּ֑וֹ אֶחָ֥ד מֵאֶחָ֖יו יִגְאָלֶֽנּוּ׃

49
Phonetic (Hebrew): o-dod֞o '֤o ben-dּodo֙ yige'ale֔nּu 'ֽo-mishshּe'e֧r bּeshsar֛o mimּishshepּachetּ֖o yige'ale֑nּu 'ֽo-hishsּi֥ygah yad֖o venige'aֽl׃
Edified Edition (EDE)An uncle or a cousin or any close relative in his clan may redeem him. Or if he prospers, he may redeem himself.

אוֹ־דֹד֞וֹ א֤וֹ בֶן־דֹּדוֹ֙ יִגְאָלֶ֔נּוּ אֽוֹ־מִשְּׁאֵ֧ר בְּשָׂר֛וֹ מִמִּשְׁפַּחְתּ֖וֹ יִגְאָלֶ֑נּוּ אֽוֹ־הִשִּׂ֥יגָה יָד֖וֹ וְנִגְאָֽל׃

50
Phonetic (Hebrew): vechishshּab֙ 'im-qone֔hu mishshּenat֙ himּa֣kero l֔o 'a֖d shshena֣t hayּobe֑l vehaya֞h kּe֤sep mimekּaro֙ bּemisepּa֣r shshani֔ym kּiyme֥y shsaki֖yr yiheye֥h 'imּֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)He and his buyer are to count the time from the year he sold himself up to the Year of Jubilee. The price for his release is to be based on the rate paid to a hired worker for that number of years.

וְחִשַּׁב֙ עִם־קֹנֵ֔הוּ מִשְּׁנַת֙ הִמָּ֣כְרוֹ ל֔וֹ עַ֖ד שְׁנַ֣ת הַיֹּבֵ֑ל וְהָיָ֞ה כֶּ֤סֶף מִמְכָּרוֹ֙ בְּמִסְפַּ֣ר שָׁנִ֔ים כִּימֵ֥י שָׂכִ֖יר יִהְיֶ֥ה עִמּֽוֹ׃

51
Phonetic (Hebrew): im-'֥od rabּ֖ot bּashshּani֑ym lepiyhen֙ yashshi֣yb gּe'ulּat֔o mikּe֖sep miqenatֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)If many years remain, he must pay for his redemption a larger share of the price paid for him.

אִם־ע֥וֹד רַבּ֖וֹת בַּשָּׁנִ֑ים לְפִיהֶן֙ יָשִׁ֣יב גְּאֻלָּת֔וֹ מִכֶּ֖סֶף מִקְנָתֽוֹ׃

52
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'im-me'a֞t nishshe'a֧r bּashshּani֛ym 'ad-shshena֥t hayּobe֖l vechishshּab-l֑o kּepi֣y shshana֔yv yashshi֖yb 'et-gּe'ulּatֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)If only a few years remain until the Year of Jubilee, he is to compute that and pay for his redemption accordingly.

וְאִם־מְעַ֞ט נִשְׁאַ֧ר בַּשָּׁנִ֛ים עַד־שְׁנַ֥ת הַיֹּבֵ֖ל וְחִשַּׁב־ל֑וֹ כְּפִ֣י שָׁנָ֔יו יָשִׁ֖יב אֶת־גְּאֻלָּתֽוֹ׃

53
Phonetic (Hebrew): kּishseki֥yr shshana֛h bּeshshana֖h yiheye֣h 'imּ֑o loֽ'-yiredּe֥nּֽu bּepe֖reke le'eyneֽyka׃
Edified Edition (EDE)He is to be treated as a worker hired from year to year; you must see to it that his buyer does not rule over him ruthlessly.

כִּשְׂכִ֥יר שָׁנָ֛ה בְּשָׁנָ֖ה יִהְיֶ֣ה עִמּ֑וֹ לֹֽא־יִרְדֶּ֥נּֽוּ בְּפֶ֖רֶךְ לְעֵינֶֽיךָ׃

54
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'im-lo֥ yigּa'e֖l bּe'e֑lּeh veyatza'֙ bּishshena֣t hayּobe֔l h֖u ubana֥yv 'imּֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)“‘Even if he is not redeemed in any of these ways, he and his children are to be released in the Year of Jubilee.

וְאִם־לֹ֥א יִגָּאֵ֖ל בְּאֵ֑לֶּה וְיָצָא֙ בִּשְׁנַ֣ת הַיֹּבֵ֔ל ה֖וּא וּבָנָ֥יו עִמּֽוֹ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): kּiֽy-li֤y beneֽy-yishsera'el֙ 'abadi֔ym 'abada֣y he֔m 'ashsher-hotze֥'tiy 'ota֖m me'e֣retz mitzera֑yim 'ani֖y yehva֥h 'eloheykeֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)for the Israelites belong to me as servants. They are my servants, whom I brought out of Egypt. I am the LORD your God."

כִּֽי־לִ֤י בְנֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ עֲבָדִ֔ים עֲבָדַ֣י הֵ֔ם אֲשֶׁר־הוֹצֵ֥אתִי אוֹתָ֖ם מֵאֶ֣רֶץ מִצְרָ֑יִם אֲנִ֖י יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֵיכֶֽם׃
