Chapter 5
1
Phonetic (Hebrew): vene֣peshsh kּiֽy-techeta֗ veshshaֽme'ah֙ q֣ol 'ala֔h veh֣u 'e֔d '֥o ra'a֖h '֣o yada֑ 'im-l֥o yagּi֖yd venashsa֥ 'avonֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)‘If anyone sins because they do not speak up after hearing a public call to testify about something they have seen or learned, they will be held responsible.

וְנֶ֣פֶשׁ כִּֽי־תֶחֱטָ֗א וְשָֽׁמְעָה֙ ק֣וֹל אָלָ֔ה וְה֣וּא עֵ֔ד א֥וֹ רָאָ֖ה א֣וֹ יָדָ֑ע אִם־ל֥וֹא יַגִּ֖יד וְנָשָׂ֥א עֲוֺנֽוֹ׃

2
Phonetic (Hebrew): ֣o ne֗peshsh 'ashshe֣r tּigּa'֮ bּekal-dּaba֣r tame'֒ 'o֩ benibela֨t chayּa֜h teme'a֗h '֤o bּenibelat֙ bּehema֣h teme'a֔h '֕o bּenibela֖t shshe֣retz tame֑ vene'ela֣m mimּe֔nּu veh֥u tame֖ ve'ashsheֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)‘If anyone touches something ceremonially unclean, whether the carcass of an unclean wild animal, livestock, or a small crawling creature, even if they are unaware of it, they become unclean and guilty.

א֣וֹ נֶ֗פֶשׁ אֲשֶׁ֣ר תִּגַּע֮ בְּכָל־דָּבָ֣ר טָמֵא֒ אוֹ֩ בְנִבְלַ֨ת חַיָּ֜ה טְמֵאָ֗ה א֤וֹ בְּנִבְלַת֙ בְּהֵמָ֣ה טְמֵאָ֔ה א֕וֹ בְּנִבְלַ֖ת שֶׁ֣רֶץ טָמֵ֑א וְנֶעְלַ֣ם מִמֶּ֔נּוּ וְה֥וּא טָמֵ֖א וְאָשֵֽׁם׃

3
Phonetic (Hebrew): ֣o ki֤y yigּa'֙ bּetume'a֣t 'ada֔m lekol֙ tume'at֔o 'ashshe֥r yitema֖ bּa֑hּ vene'ela֣m mimּe֔nּu veh֥u yada֖ ve'ashsheֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)‘Or if they touch human uncleanness, anything that would make a person unclean, even if they are unaware of it, they are guilty when they realize what has happened.

א֣וֹ כִ֤י יִגַּע֙ בְּטֻמְאַ֣ת אָדָ֔ם לְכֹל֙ טֻמְאָת֔וֹ אֲשֶׁ֥ר יִטְמָ֖א בָּ֑הּ וְנֶעְלַ֣ם מִמֶּ֔נּוּ וְה֥וּא יָדַ֖ע וְאָשֵֽׁם׃

4
Phonetic (Hebrew): ֣o ne֡peshsh kּi֣y tishshּaba'֩ lebatּe֨ bishsepata֜yim lehara֣ ׀ '֣o leheyti֗yb le֠kol 'ashshe֨r yebatּe֧ ha'ada֛m bּishshebu'a֖h vene'ela֣m mimּe֑nּu vehu'-yada֥ ve'ashshe֖m le'acha֥t me'eֽlּeh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)‘Or if anyone thoughtlessly takes an oath to do anything, whether good or evil, in any matter one might swear about, even if they are unaware of it, they are guilty when they realize it.

א֣וֹ נֶ֡פֶשׁ כִּ֣י תִשָּׁבַע֩ לְבַטֵּ֨א בִשְׂפָתַ֜יִם לְהָרַ֣ע ׀ א֣וֹ לְהֵיטִ֗יב לְ֠כֹל אֲשֶׁ֨ר יְבַטֵּ֧א הָאָדָ֛ם בִּשְׁבֻעָ֖ה וְנֶעְלַ֣ם מִמֶּ֑נּוּ וְהוּא־יָדַ֥ע וְאָשֵׁ֖ם לְאַחַ֥ת מֵאֵֽלֶּה׃

5
Phonetic (Hebrew): vehaya֥h kiֽy-ye'eshsha֖m le'acha֣t me'e֑lּeh vehi֨tevadּa֔h 'ashshe֥r chata֖ 'aleֽyha׃
Edified Edition (EDE)‘When anyone becomes aware that they are guilty in any of these ways, they must confess the sin they have committed.

וְהָיָ֥ה כִֽי־יֶאְשַׁ֖ם לְאַחַ֣ת מֵאֵ֑לֶּה וְהִ֨תְוַדָּ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר חָטָ֖א עָלֶֽיהָ׃

6
Phonetic (Hebrew): vehebi֣y 'et-'ashsham֣o layhva֡h 'a֣l chatּa'to֩ 'ashshe֨r chata֜ neqeba֨h min-hatzּo֥'n kּishsebּa֛h 'ֽo-shse'iyra֥t 'izּi֖ym lechatּa֑'t vekipּe֥r 'ala֛yv hakּohe֖n mechatּa'tֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)As a penalty for the sin they have committed, they must bring to the LORD a female lamb or goat from the flock as a guilt offering [1]; and the priest shall make atonement for them for their sin.

וְהֵבִ֣יא אֶת־אֲשָׁמ֣וֹ לַיהוָ֡ה עַ֣ל חַטָּאתוֹ֩ אֲשֶׁ֨ר חָטָ֜א נְקֵבָ֨ה מִן־הַצֹּ֥אן כִּשְׂבָּ֛ה אֽוֹ־שְׂעִירַ֥ת עִזִּ֖ים לְחַטָּ֑את וְכִפֶּ֥ר עָלָ֛יו הַכֹּהֵ֖ן מֵחַטָּאתֽוֹ׃

7
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'im-lo֨ tagּi֣y yado֮ dּe֣y shseh֒ vehebi֨y 'et-'ashsham֜o 'ashshe֣r chata֗ shshetּe֥y tori֛ym 'ֽo-shshene֥y beneֽy-yona֖h laֽyhva֑h 'echa֥d lechatּa֖'t ve'echa֥d le'olaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)‘If they cannot afford a lamb, they must bring two turtledoves or two young pigeons to the LORD as a penalty for their sin, one for a sin offering and the other for a burnt offering.

וְאִם־לֹ֨א תַגִּ֣יע יָדוֹ֮ דֵּ֣י שֶׂה֒ וְהֵבִ֨יא אֶת־אֲשָׁמ֜וֹ אֲשֶׁ֣ר חָטָ֗א שְׁתֵּ֥י תֹרִ֛ים אֽוֹ־שְׁנֵ֥י בְנֵֽי־יוֹנָ֖ה לַֽיהוָ֑ה אֶחָ֥ד לְחַטָּ֖את וְאֶחָ֥ד לְעֹלָֽה׃

8
Phonetic (Hebrew): vehebi֤y 'otam֙ 'el-hakּohe֔n vehiqeri֛yb 'et-'ashshe֥r lachatּa֖'t ri'shshona֑h umala֧q 'et-ro'shsh֛o mimּ֥ul 'arepּ֖o velo֥ yabedּiֽyl׃
Edified Edition (EDE)They are to bring them to the priest, who shall first offer the one for the sin offering. He is to wring its head from its neck, without severing it completely.

וְהֵבִ֤יא אֹתָם֙ אֶל־הַכֹּהֵ֔ן וְהִקְרִ֛יב אֶת־אֲשֶׁ֥ר לַחַטָּ֖את רִאשׁוֹנָ֑ה וּמָלַ֧ק אֶת־רֹאשׁ֛וֹ מִמּ֥וּל עָרְפּ֖וֹ וְלֹ֥א יַבְדִּֽיל׃

9
Phonetic (Hebrew): vehizּa֞h midּa֤m hachatּa't֙ 'al-qi֣yr hamּizebּe֔cha vehanּishshe'a֣r bּadּa֔m yimּatze֖h 'el-yes֣od hamּizebּe֑cha chatּa֖'t hֽu'׃
Edified Edition (EDE)He shall sprinkle some of the blood of the sin offering against the side of the altar; the rest of the blood must be drained out at the base of the altar. It is a sin offering.

וְהִזָּ֞ה מִדַּ֤ם הַחַטָּאת֙ עַל־קִ֣יר הַמִּזְבֵּ֔חַ וְהַנִּשְׁאָ֣ר בַּדָּ֔ם יִמָּצֵ֖ה אֶל־יְס֣וֹד הַמִּזְבֵּ֑חַ חַטָּ֖את הֽוּא׃

10
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'et-hashshּeni֛y ya'ashse֥h 'ola֖h kּamּishshepּa֑t vekipּe֨r 'ala֧yv hakּohe֛n mechatּa't֥o 'ashsher-chata֖ venisela֥ch lֽo׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)The priest shall then offer the second bird as a burnt offering in the prescribed way and make atonement for them for the sin they have committed, and they will be forgiven.

וְאֶת־הַשֵּׁנִ֛י יַעֲשֶׂ֥ה עֹלָ֖ה כַּמִּשְׁפָּ֑ט וְכִפֶּ֨ר עָלָ֧יו הַכֹּהֵ֛ן מֵחַטָּאת֥וֹ אֲשֶׁר־חָטָ֖א וְנִסְלַ֥ח לֽוֹ׃ס

11
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'im-lo'֩ tashsּi֨yg yad֜o lishshetּe֣y tori֗ym 'o֮ lishshene֣y beney-yonah֒ vehebi֨y 'et-qarebּan֜o 'ashshe֣r chata֗ 'ashsiyri֧t ha'epa֛h so֖let lechatּa֑'t lo'-yashsi֨ym 'ale֜yha shshe֗men velo'-yitּe֤n 'ale֨yha֙ lebona֔h kּi֥y chatּa֖'t hiֽy'׃
Edified Edition (EDE)‘If, however, they cannot afford two turtledoves or two young pigeons, they are to bring as an offering for their sin a tenth of an ephah of fine flour for a sin offering. They must not put olive oil or frankincense on it, because it is a sin offering.

וְאִם־לֹא֩ תַשִּׂ֨יג יָד֜וֹ לִשְׁתֵּ֣י תֹרִ֗ים אוֹ֮ לִשְׁנֵ֣י בְנֵי־יוֹנָה֒ וְהֵבִ֨יא אֶת־קָרְבָּנ֜וֹ אֲשֶׁ֣ר חָטָ֗א עֲשִׂירִ֧ת הָאֵפָ֛ה סֹ֖לֶת לְחַטָּ֑את לֹא־יָשִׂ֨ים עָלֶ֜יהָ שֶׁ֗מֶן וְלֹא־יִתֵּ֤ן עָלֶ֨יהָ֙ לְבֹנָ֔ה כִּ֥י חַטָּ֖את הִֽיא׃

12
Phonetic (Hebrew): vehebiy'ahּ֮ 'el-hakּohen֒ veqama֣tz hakּohe֣n ׀ mi֠mּenּah mel֨o qumetz֜o 'et-'azekּaratah֙ vehiqeti֣yr hamּizebּe֔chah 'a֖l 'ishshּe֣y yehva֑h chatּa֖'t hiֽv'׃
Edified Edition (EDE)They shall bring it to the priest, who shall take a handful of it as a memorial portion and burn it on the altar on top of the offerings made by fire to the LORD. It is a sin offering.

וֶהֱבִיאָהּ֮ אֶל־הַכֹּהֵן֒ וְקָמַ֣ץ הַכֹּהֵ֣ן ׀ מִ֠מֶּנָּה מְל֨וֹא קֻמְצ֜וֹ אֶת־אַזְכָּרָתָה֙ וְהִקְטִ֣יר הַמִּזְבֵּ֔חָה עַ֖ל אִשֵּׁ֣י יְהוָ֑ה חַטָּ֖את הִֽוא׃

13
Phonetic (Hebrew): vekipּer֩ 'ala֨yv hakּohe֜n 'al-chatּa't֧o 'ashsher-chata֛ meֽ'acha֥t me'e֖lּeh venisela֣ch l֑o vehayeta֥h lakּohe֖n kּamּinechaֽh׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)In this way, the priest will make atonement for them for any of these sins they have committed, and they will be forgiven. The rest of the offering will belong to the priest, as with the grain offering.’

וְכִפֶּר֩ עָלָ֨יו הַכֹּהֵ֜ן עַל־חַטָּאת֧וֹ אֲשֶׁר־חָטָ֛א מֵֽאַחַ֥ת מֵאֵ֖לֶּה וְנִסְלַ֣ח ל֑וֹ וְהָיְתָ֥ה לַכֹּהֵ֖ן כַּמִּנְחָֽה׃ס

14
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayedabּe֥r yehva֖h 'el-moshshe֥h lּe'moֽr׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The LORD spoke to Moses, saying,

וַיְדַבֵּ֥ר יְהוָ֖ה אֶל־מֹשֶׁ֥ה לֵּאמֹֽר׃

15
Phonetic (Hebrew): ne֚peshsh kּiֽy-time'o֣l ma֔'al vechaֽte'ah֙ bּishshegaga֔h miqּadeshshe֖y yehva֑h vehebiy'֩ 'et-'ashsham֨o laֽyhva֜h 'a֧yil tּami֣ym min-hatzּo֗'n bּe'erekּeka֛ kּeֽsep-shsheqali֥ym bּeshsheֽqel-haqּo֖deshsh le'ashshaֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"When anyone is unfaithful to the LORD by sinning unintentionally in regard to any of the LORD’s holy things, they are to bring to the LORD as a penalty a ram from the flock, one without defect and of the proper value in silver, according to the sanctuary shekel. It is a guilt offering.

נֶ֚פֶשׁ כִּֽי־תִמְעֹ֣ל מַ֔עַל וְחָֽטְאָה֙ בִּשְׁגָגָ֔ה מִקָּדְשֵׁ֖י יְהוָ֑ה וְהֵבִיא֩ אֶת־אֲשָׁמ֨וֹ לַֽיהוָ֜ה אַ֧יִל תָּמִ֣ים מִן־הַצֹּ֗אן בְּעֶרְכְּךָ֛ כֶּֽסֶף־שְׁקָלִ֥ים בְּשֶֽׁקֶל־הַקֹּ֖דֶשׁ לְאָשָֽׁם׃

16
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'e֣t 'ashsher֩ chata֨ min-haqּo֜deshsh yeshshalּe֗m ve'et-chamiֽyshshito֙ yose֣p 'ala֔yv venata֥n 'ot֖o lakּohe֑n vehakּohe֗n yekapּe֥r 'ala֛yv bּe'e֥yl ha'ashsha֖m venisela֥ch lֽo׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)They must make restitution for what they have failed to do regarding the holy things, add a fifth of the value to it and give it all to the priest. The priest will make atonement for them with the ram as a guilt offering, and they will be forgiven.

וְאֵ֣ת אֲשֶׁר֩ חָטָ֨א מִן־הַקֹּ֜דֶשׁ יְשַׁלֵּ֗ם וְאֶת־חֲמִֽישִׁתוֹ֙ יוֹסֵ֣ף עָלָ֔יו וְנָתַ֥ן אֹת֖וֹ לַכֹּהֵ֑ן וְהַכֹּהֵ֗ן יְכַפֵּ֥ר עָלָ֛יו בְּאֵ֥יל הָאָשָׁ֖ם וְנִסְלַ֥ח לֽוֹ׃פ

17
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'im-ne֨peshsh֙ kּi֣y teֽcheta֔ ve'aֽshseta֗h 'achat֙ mikּal-mitzevo֣t yehva֔h 'ashshe֖r lo֣ te'ashse֑ynah veloֽ'-yada֥ ve'ashshe֖m venashsa֥ 'avonֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"If anyone sins and does what is forbidden in any of the LORD’s commands, even if they do not know it, they are guilty and will be held responsible.

וְאִם־נֶ֨פֶשׁ֙ כִּ֣י תֶֽחֱטָ֔א וְעָֽשְׂתָ֗ה אַחַת֙ מִכָּל־מִצְוֺ֣ת יְהוָ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֖ר לֹ֣א תֵעָשֶׂ֑ינָה וְלֹֽא־יָדַ֥ע וְאָשֵׁ֖ם וְנָשָׂ֥א עֲוֺנֽוֹ׃

18
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve֠hebiy 'a֣yil tּami֧ym min-hatzּo֛'n bּe'erekּeka֥ le'ashsha֖m 'el-hakּohe֑n vekipּer֩ 'ala֨yv hakּohe֜n 'a֣l shshigegat֧o 'ashsher-shshaga֛g veh֥u loֽ'-yada֖ venisela֥ch lֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)They are to bring to the priest a ram from the flock, one without defect and of the proper value, as a guilt offering. In this way, the priest will make atonement for them for the error they committed unintentionally, and they will be forgiven.

וְ֠הֵבִיא אַ֣יִל תָּמִ֧ים מִן־הַצֹּ֛אן בְּעֶרְכְּךָ֥ לְאָשָׁ֖ם אֶל־הַכֹּהֵ֑ן וְכִפֶּר֩ עָלָ֨יו הַכֹּהֵ֜ן עַ֣ל שִׁגְגָת֧וֹ אֲשֶׁר־שָׁגָ֛ג וְה֥וּא לֹֽא־יָדַ֖ע וְנִסְלַ֥ח לֽוֹ׃

19
Phonetic (Hebrew): ashsha֖m h֑u 'ashsho֥m 'ashsha֖m layhvaֽh׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)It is a guilt offering; they have been guilty of wrongdoing against the LORD."

אָשָׁ֖ם ה֑וּא אָשֹׁ֥ם אָשַׁ֖ם לַיהוָֽה׃פ

20

וַיְדַבֵּ֥ר יְהוָ֖ה אֶל־מֹשֶׁ֥ה לֵּאמֹֽר׃

21

נֶ֚פֶשׁ כִּ֣י תֶחֱטָ֔א וּמָעֲלָ֥ה מַ֖עַל בַּיהוָ֑ה וְכִחֵ֨שׁ בַּעֲמִית֜וֹ בְּפִקָּד֗וֹן אֽוֹ־בִתְשׂ֤וּמֶת יָד֙ א֣וֹ בְגָזֵ֔ל א֖וֹ עָשַׁ֥ק אֶת־עֲמִיתֽוֹ׃

22

אֽוֹ־מָצָ֧א אֲבֵדָ֛ה וְכִ֥חֶשׁ בָּ֖הּ וְנִשְׁבַּ֣ע עַל־שָׁ֑קֶר עַל־אַחַ֗ת מִכֹּ֛ל אֲשֶׁר־יַעֲשֶׂ֥ה הָאָדָ֖ם לַחֲטֹ֥א בָהֵֽנָּה׃

23

וְהָיָה֮ כִּֽי־יֶחֱטָ֣א וְאָשֵׁם֒ וְהֵשִׁ֨יב אֶת־הַגְּזֵלָ֜ה אֲשֶׁ֣ר גָּזָ֗ל א֤וֹ אֶת־הָעֹ֨שֶׁק֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר עָשָׁ֔ק א֚וֹ אֶת־הַפִּקָּד֔וֹן אֲשֶׁ֥ר הָפְקַ֖ד אִתּ֑וֹ א֥וֹ אֶת־הָאֲבֵדָ֖ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר מָצָֽא׃

24

א֠וֹ מִכֹּ֞ל אֲשֶׁר־יִשָּׁבַ֣ע עָלָיו֮ לַשֶּׁקֶר֒ וְשִׁלַּ֤ם אֹתוֹ֙ בְּרֹאשׁ֔וֹ וַחֲמִשִׁתָ֖יו יֹסֵ֣ף עָלָ֑יו לַאֲשֶׁ֨ר ה֥וּא ל֛וֹ יִתְּנֶ֖נּוּ בְּי֥וֹם אַשְׁמָתֽוֹ׃

25

וְאֶת־אֲשָׁמ֥וֹ יָבִ֖יא לַיהוָ֑ה אַ֣יִל תָּמִ֧ים מִן־הַצֹּ֛אן בְּעֶרְכְּךָ֥ לְאָשָׁ֖ם אֶל־הַכֹּהֵֽן׃

26

וְכִפֶּ֨ר עָלָ֧יו הַכֹּהֵ֛ן לִפְנֵ֥י יְהוָ֖ה וְנִסְלַ֣ח ל֑וֹ עַל־אַחַ֛ת מִכֹּ֥ל אֲשֶֽׁר־יַעֲשֶׂ֖ה לְאַשְׁמָ֥ה בָֽהּ׃פ
