Chapter 2

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'atּa֗h 'aleyke֛m hamּitzeva֥h hazּo֖'t hakּohaniֽym׃

Edified Edition (EDE)And now, O you priests, this commandment is for you.

וְעַתָּ֗ה אֲלֵיכֶ֛ם הַמִּצְוָ֥ה הַזֹּ֖את הַכֹּהֲנִֽים׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): im-lo֣ tishsheme'֡u ve'im-lo'֩ tashsi֨ymu 'al-le֜b late֧t kּab֣od lishshemi֗y 'amar֙ yehva֣h tzeba'֔ot veshshilּachetּi֤y bakem֙ 'et-hamּe'era֔h ve'aroti֖y 'et-bּirekֽoteyke֑m vegam֙ 'aroti֔yha kּi֥y 'eyneke֖m shsami֥ym 'al-leֽb׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"If you will not hear, and if you will not lay it to heart, to give glory to My name," says the LORD of hosts, "I will even send a curse upon you, and I will curse your blessings: yes, I have cursed them already, because you do not lay it to heart."

אִם־לֹ֣א תִשְׁמְע֡וּ וְאִם־לֹא֩ תָשִׂ֨ימוּ עַל־לֵ֜ב לָתֵ֧ת כָּב֣וֹד לִשְׁמִ֗י אָמַר֙ יְהוָ֣ה צְבָא֔וֹת וְשִׁלַּחְתִּ֤י בָכֶם֙ אֶת־הַמְּאֵרָ֔ה וְאָרוֹתִ֖י אֶת־בִּרְכֽוֹתֵיכֶ֑ם וְגַם֙ אָרוֹתִ֔יהָ כִּ֥י אֵינְכֶ֖ם שָׂמִ֥ים עַל־לֵֽב׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): hineni֨y go'e֤r lakem֙ 'et-hazּe֔ra vezeri֤ytiy pe֨reshsh֙ 'al-pּeneyke֔m pּe֖reshsh chagּeyke֑m venashsa֥ 'eteke֖m 'elaֽyv׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"Behold, I will corrupt your seed, and spread dung upon your faces, even the dung of your solemn feasts; and one shall take you away with it."

הִנְנִ֨י גֹעֵ֤ר לָכֶם֙ אֶת־הַזֶּ֔רַע וְזֵרִ֤יתִי פֶ֨רֶשׁ֙ עַל־פְּנֵיכֶ֔ם פֶּ֖רֶשׁ חַגֵּיכֶ֑ם וְנָשָׂ֥א אֶתְכֶ֖ם אֵלָֽיו׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): viֽyda'etּe֕m kּi֚y shshilּa֣chetּiy 'aleyke֔m 'e֖t hamּitzeva֣h hazּo֑'t liֽhey֤ot bּeriytiy֙ 'et-levi֔y 'ama֖r yehva֥h tzeba'ֽot׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"And you shall know that I have sent this commandment to you, that My covenant might be with Levi," says the LORD of hosts.

וִֽידַעְתֶּ֕ם כִּ֚י שִׁלַּ֣חְתִּי אֲלֵיכֶ֔ם אֵ֖ת הַמִּצְוָ֣ה הַזֹּ֑את לִֽהְי֤וֹת בְּרִיתִי֙ אֶת־לֵוִ֔י אָמַ֖ר יְהוָ֥ה צְבָאֽוֹת׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): bּeriyti֣y ׀ hayeta֣h 'itּ֗o haֽchayּiym֙ veha֨shshּal֔om va'etּeneֽm-l֥o mora֖ vayּiֽyra'e֑niy umipּene֥y shshemi֖y nicha֥t hֽu'׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"My covenant was with him of life and peace; and I gave them to him for the fear wherewith he feared Me, and was afraid before My name."

בְּרִיתִ֣י ׀ הָיְתָ֣ה אִתּ֗וֹ הַֽחַיִּים֙ וְהַ֨שָּׁל֔וֹם וָאֶתְּנֵֽם־ל֥וֹ מוֹרָ֖א וַיִּֽירָאֵ֑נִי וּמִפְּנֵ֥י שְׁמִ֖י נִחַ֥ת הֽוּא׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): tּora֤t 'emet֙ hayeta֣h bּepi֔yhu ve'avela֖h lo'-nimetza֣ bishsepata֑yv bּeshshal֤om ubemiyshshor֙ hala֣ke 'itּi֔y verabּi֖ym heshshi֥yb me'avoֽn׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"The law of truth was in his mouth, and iniquity was not found in his lips: he walked with Me in peace and equity, and did turn many away from iniquity."

תּוֹרַ֤ת אֱמֶת֙ הָיְתָ֣ה בְּפִ֔יהוּ וְעַוְלָ֖ה לֹא־נִמְצָ֣א בִשְׂפָתָ֑יו בְּשָׁל֤וֹם וּבְמִישׁוֹר֙ הָלַ֣ךְ אִתִּ֔י וְרַבִּ֖ים הֵשִׁ֥יב מֵעָוֺֽן׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): kּiֽy-shsipete֤y kohen֙ yishshemeru-da֔'at vetora֖h yebaqeshsh֣u mipּi֑yhu kּi֛y male'a֥ke yehvaֽh-tzeba'֖ot hֽu'׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"For the priest's lips should keep knowledge, and they should seek the law at his mouth: for he is the messenger of the LORD of hosts."

כִּֽי־שִׂפְתֵ֤י כֹהֵן֙ יִשְׁמְרוּ־דַ֔עַת וְתוֹרָ֖ה יְבַקְשׁ֣וּ מִפִּ֑יהוּ כִּ֛י מַלְאַ֥ךְ יְהוָֽה־צְבָא֖וֹת הֽוּא׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'atּem֙ saretּe֣m min-hadּe֔reke hikeshshaletּe֥m rabּi֖ym bּatּora֑h shshiֽchatּem֙ bּeri֣yt halּevi֔y 'ama֖r yehva֥h tzeba'ֽot׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"But you are departed out of the way; you have caused many to stumble at the law; you have corrupted the covenant of Levi," says the LORD of hosts.

וְאַתֶּם֙ סַרְתֶּ֣ם מִן־הַדֶּ֔רֶךְ הִכְשַׁלְתֶּ֥ם רַבִּ֖ים בַּתּוֹרָ֑ה שִֽׁחַתֶּם֙ בְּרִ֣ית הַלֵּוִ֔י אָמַ֖ר יְהוָ֥ה צְבָאֽוֹת׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vegam-'ani֞y nata֧tּiy 'eteke֛m nibezi֥ym ushshepali֖ym lekal-ha'a֑m kּepi֗y 'ashshe֤r 'eֽynekem֙ shshomeri֣ym 'et-dּeraka֔y venoshse'i֥ym pּani֖ym bּatּoraֽh׃p

Edified Edition (EDE)"Therefore have I also made you contemptible and base before all the people, according as you have not kept My ways, but have been partial in the law."

וְגַם־אֲנִ֞י נָתַ֧תִּי אֶתְכֶ֛ם נִבְזִ֥ים וּשְׁפָלִ֖ים לְכָל־הָעָ֑ם כְּפִ֗י אֲשֶׁ֤ר אֵֽינְכֶם֙ שֹׁמְרִ֣ים אֶת־דְּרָכַ֔י וְנֹשְׂאִ֥ים פָּנִ֖ים בַּתּוֹרָֽה׃פ

Phonetic (Hebrew): hal֨o 'a֤b 'echad֙ lekulּa֔nu hal֛o 'e֥l 'eֽcha֖d bּera'a֑nu madּ֗u'a nibegּad֙ 'i֣yshsh bּe'achi֔yv lechalּe֖l bּeri֥yt 'aboteֽynu׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Have we not all one father? has not one God created us? why do we deal treacherously every man against his brother, by profaning the covenant of our fathers?

הֲל֨וֹא אָ֤ב אֶחָד֙ לְכֻלָּ֔נוּ הֲל֛וֹא אֵ֥ל אֶֽחָ֖ד בְּרָאָ֑נוּ מַדּ֗וּעַ נִבְגַּד֙ אִ֣ישׁ בְּאָחִ֔יו לְחַלֵּ֖ל בְּרִ֥ית אֲבֹתֵֽינוּ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): bּageda֣h yehuda֔h veto'eba֛h ne'eshseta֥h beyishsera'e֖l ubiyrֽushshala֑im kּi֣y ׀ chilּe֣l yehuda֗h qo֤deshsh yehvah֙ 'ashshe֣r 'ahe֔b uba'a֖l bּat-'e֥l nekaֽr׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Judah has dealt treacherously, and an abomination is committed in Israel and in Jerusalem; for Judah has profaned the holiness of the LORD which He loved, and has married the daughter of a strange god.

בָּגְדָ֣ה יְהוּדָ֔ה וְתוֹעֵבָ֛ה נֶעֶשְׂתָ֥ה בְיִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל וּבִירֽוּשָׁלִָ֑ם כִּ֣י ׀ חִלֵּ֣ל יְהוּדָ֗ה קֹ֤דֶשׁ יְהוָה֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר אָהֵ֔ב וּבָעַ֖ל בַּת־אֵ֥ל נֵכָֽר׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): yakere֨t yehva֜h la'i֨yshsh 'ashshe֤r ya'ashse֨nּah֙ 'e֣r ve'one֔h me'ahole֖y yaֽ'aqo֑b umagּi֣yshsh minecha֔h laֽyhva֖h tzeba'ֽot׃p

Edified Edition (EDE)The LORD will cut off the man that does this, the master and the scholar, out of the tabernacles of Jacob, and him that offers an offering to the LORD of hosts.

יַכְרֵ֨ת יְהוָ֜ה לָאִ֨ישׁ אֲשֶׁ֤ר יַעֲשֶׂ֨נָּה֙ עֵ֣ר וְעֹנֶ֔ה מֵאָהֳלֵ֖י יַֽעֲקֹ֑ב וּמַגִּ֣ישׁ מִנְחָ֔ה לַֽיהוָ֖ה צְבָאֽוֹת׃פ

Phonetic (Hebrew): vezo't֙ shsheni֣yt tּaֽ'ashs֔u kּasּ֤ot dּime'ah֙ 'et-mizebּa֣ch yehva֔h bּeki֖y vaֽ'anaqa֑h me'e֣yn '֗od pּenot֙ 'el-hamּinecha֔h velaqa֥chat ratz֖on miyּedekeֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)And this have you done again, covering the altar of the LORD with tears, with weeping, and with crying out, insomuch that He regards not the offering any more, or receivs it with good will at your hand.

וְזֹאת֙ שֵׁנִ֣ית תַּֽעֲשׂ֔וּ כַּסּ֤וֹת דִּמְעָה֙ אֶת־מִזְבַּ֣ח יְהוָ֔ה בְּכִ֖י וַֽאֲנָקָ֑ה מֵאֵ֣ין ע֗וֹד פְּנוֹת֙ אֶל־הַמִּנְחָ֔ה וְלָקַ֥חַת רָצ֖וֹן מִיֶּדְכֶֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): va'amaretּe֖m 'al-ma֑h 'a֡l kּiy-yehvah֩ he'i֨yd bּeyneka֜ ube֣yn ׀ 'e֣shshet ne'ure֗yka 'ashshe֤r 'atּah֙ bּaga֣detּah bּa֔hּ vehi֥y chaberetּeka֖ ve'e֥shshet bּeriyteֽka׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Yet you say, "Wherefore?" Because the LORD has been witness between you and the wife of your youth, against whom you hast dealt treacherously: yet is she your companion, and the wife of your covenant.

וַאֲמַרְתֶּ֖ם עַל־מָ֑ה עַ֡ל כִּי־יְהוָה֩ הֵעִ֨יד בֵּינְךָ֜ וּבֵ֣ין ׀ אֵ֣שֶׁת נְעוּרֶ֗יךָ אֲשֶׁ֤ר אַתָּה֙ בָּגַ֣דְתָּה בָּ֔הּ וְהִ֥יא חֲבֶרְתְּךָ֖ וְאֵ֥שֶׁת בְּרִיתֶֽךָ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): velo'-'echa֣d 'ashsa֗h ushshe'a֥r r֨ucha֙ l֔o umah֙ haֽ'echa֔d mebaqּe֖shsh ze֣ra 'elohi֑ym venishshemaretּem֙ bּer֣uchake֔m ube'e֥shshet ne'ure֖yka 'al-yibegּoֽd׃

Edified Edition (EDE)And did not He make one? Yet had He the residue of the spirit. And wherefore one? That He might seek a godly seed. Therefore take heed to your spirit, and let none deal treacherously against the wife of his youth.

וְלֹא־אֶחָ֣ד עָשָׂ֗ה וּשְׁאָ֥ר ר֨וּחַ֙ ל֔וֹ וּמָה֙ הָֽאֶחָ֔ד מְבַקֵּ֖שׁ זֶ֣רַע אֱלֹהִ֑ים וְנִשְׁמַרְתֶּם֙ בְּר֣וּחֲכֶ֔ם וּבְאֵ֥שֶׁת נְעוּרֶ֖יךָ אַל־יִבְגֹּֽד׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): kּiֽy-shsane֣ shshalּa֗ch 'ama֤r yehvah֙ 'elohe֣y yishsera'e֔l vekisּa֤h chamas֙ 'al-lebushsh֔o 'ama֖r yehva֣h tzeba'֑ot venishshemaretּe֥m bּeruchake֖m velo֥ tibegּoֽdu׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)"For the LORD, the God of Israel, says that He hats putting away: for one covers violence with his garment," says the LORD of hosts: "therefore take heed to your spirit, that you deal not treacherously."

כִּֽי־שָׂנֵ֣א שַׁלַּ֗ח אָמַ֤ר יְהוָה֙ אֱלֹהֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל וְכִסָּ֤ה חָמָס֙ עַל־לְבוּשׁ֔וֹ אָמַ֖ר יְהוָ֣ה צְבָא֑וֹת וְנִשְׁמַרְתֶּ֥ם בְּרוּחֲכֶ֖ם וְלֹ֥א תִבְגֹּֽדוּ׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): hoga'etּe֤m yehvah֙ bּedibereyke֔m va'amaretּe֖m bּamּa֣h hoga֑'enu bּe'emareke֗m kּal-'o֨shseh ra֜ t֣ob ׀ bּe'eyne֣y yehva֗h ubahem֙ h֣u chape֔tz '֥o 'ayּe֖h 'elohe֥y hamּishshepּaֽt׃

Edified Edition (EDE)You have wearied the LORD with your words. Yet you say, "Wherein have we wearied Him?" When you say, "Every one that does evil is good in the sight of the LORD, and He delights in them;" or, "Where is the God of judgement?"

הוֹגַעְתֶּ֤ם יְהוָה֙ בְּדִבְרֵיכֶ֔ם וַאֲמַרְתֶּ֖ם בַּמָּ֣ה הוֹגָ֑עְנוּ בֶּאֱמָרְכֶ֗ם כָּל־עֹ֨שֵׂה רָ֜ע ט֣וֹב ׀ בְּעֵינֵ֣י יְהוָ֗ה וּבָהֶם֙ ה֣וּא חָפֵ֔ץ א֥וֹ אַיֵּ֖ה אֱלֹהֵ֥י הַמִּשְׁפָּֽט׃
