Chapter 3

Phonetic (Hebrew): h֖oy 'i֣yr dּami֑ym kּulּa֗hּ kּa֤chashsh pּe֨req֙ mele'a֔h lo֥ yami֖yshsh taֽrep׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Woe to the bloody city! it is all full of lies and robbery; the prey departs not;

ה֖וֹי עִ֣יר דָּמִ֑ים כֻּלָּ֗הּ כַּ֤חַשׁ פֶּ֨רֶק֙ מְלֵאָ֔ה לֹ֥א יָמִ֖ישׁ טָֽרֶף׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): q֣ol shsh֔ot veq֖ol ra֣'ashsh 'opa֑n ves֣us dּohe֔r umerekּaba֖h meraqּedaֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)The noise of a whip, and the noise of the rattling of the wheels, and of the pransing horses, and of the jumping chariots.

ק֣וֹל שׁ֔וֹט וְק֖וֹל רַ֣עַשׁ אוֹפָ֑ן וְס֣וּס דֹּהֵ֔ר וּמֶרְכָּבָ֖ה מְרַקֵּדָֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): pּara֣shsh ma'ale֗h vela֤hab che֨reb֙ ubera֣q chani֔yt vero֥b chala֖l veko֣bed pּa֑ger ve'e֥yn qe֨tzeh֙ lagּeviyּa֔h ykshlv vekashshel֖u bּigeviyּataֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)The horseman lifts up both the bright sword and the glittering spear: and there is a multitude of slain, and a great number of carcases; and there is none end of their corpses; they stumble upon their corpses:

פָּרָ֣שׁ מַעֲלֶ֗ה וְלַ֤הַב חֶ֨רֶב֙ וּבְרַ֣ק חֲנִ֔ית וְרֹ֥ב חָלָ֖ל וְכֹ֣בֶד פָּ֑גֶר וְאֵ֥ין קֵ֨צֶה֙ לַגְּוִיָּ֔ה יכשלו וְכָשְׁל֖וּ בִּגְוִיָּתָֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): merob֙ zenune֣y zona֔h t֥obat che֖n bּa'ala֣t kּeshshapi֑ym hamּoke֤ret gּoyim֙ bּizenune֔yha umishshepּach֖ot bּikeshshapeֽyha׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Because of the multitude of the whoredoms of the wellfavoured harlot, the mistress of witchcrafts, that sells nations through her whoredoms, and families through her witchcrafts.

מֵרֹב֙ זְנוּנֵ֣י זוֹנָ֔ה ט֥וֹבַת חֵ֖ן בַּעֲלַ֣ת כְּשָׁפִ֑ים הַמֹּכֶ֤רֶת גּוֹיִם֙ בִּזְנוּנֶ֔יהָ וּמִשְׁפָּח֖וֹת בִּכְשָׁפֶֽיהָ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): hineni֣y 'ela֗yike ne'um֙ yehva֣h tzeba'֔ot vegilּeyti֥y shshula֖yike 'al-pּana֑yike vehare'eyti֤y goyim֙ ma'ere֔ke umamelak֖ot qeloneֽke׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Behold, I am against you, says the LORD of hosts; and I will discover your skirts upon your face, and I will show the nations your nakedness, and the kingdoms your shame.

הִנְנִ֣י אֵלַ֗יִךְ נְאֻם֙ יְהוָ֣ה צְבָא֔וֹת וְגִלֵּיתִ֥י שׁוּלַ֖יִךְ עַל־פָּנָ֑יִךְ וְהַרְאֵיתִ֤י גוֹיִם֙ מַעְרֵ֔ךְ וּמַמְלָכ֖וֹת קְלוֹנֵֽךְ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vehishshelaketּi֥y 'ala֛yike shshiqּutzi֖ym venibּaletּi֑yke veshsametּi֖yke kּeroֽ'iy׃

Edified Edition (EDE)And I will cast abominable filth upon you, and make you vile, and will set you as a gazingstock.

וְהִשְׁלַכְתִּ֥י עָלַ֛יִךְ שִׁקֻּצִ֖ים וְנִבַּלְתִּ֑יךְ וְשַׂמְתִּ֖יךְ כְּרֹֽאִי׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vehaya֤h kal-ro'a֨yike֙ yidּ֣od mimּe֔ke ve'amar֙ shshadּeda֣h niֽyneve֔h mi֖y yan֣ud la֑hּ me'a֛yin 'abaqּe֥shsh menachami֖ym laֽke׃

Edified Edition (EDE)And it shall come to pass, that all they that look upon you shall flee from you, and say, "Nineveh is laid waste: who will bemoan her? Where shall I seek comforters for you?"

וְהָיָ֤ה כָל־רֹאַ֨יִךְ֙ יִדּ֣וֹד מִמֵּ֔ךְ וְאָמַר֙ שָׁדְּדָ֣ה נִֽינְוֵ֔ה מִ֖י יָנ֣וּד לָ֑הּ מֵאַ֛יִן אֲבַקֵּ֥שׁ מְנַחֲמִ֖ים לָֽךְ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): hateֽytebiy֙ minּo֣ 'am֔on hayּoֽshshebah֙ bּaye'ori֔ym ma֖yim sabi֣yb la֑hּ 'ashsher-che֣yl ya֔m miyּa֖m chomataֽhּ׃

Edified Edition (EDE)are you better than populous No, that was situate among the rivers, that had the waters round about it, whose rampart was the sea, and her wall was from the sea?

הֲתֵֽיטְבִי֙ מִנֹּ֣א אָמ֔וֹן הַיֹּֽשְׁבָה֙ בַּיְאֹרִ֔ים מַ֖יִם סָבִ֣יב לָ֑הּ אֲשֶׁר־חֵ֣יל יָ֔ם מִיָּ֖ם חוֹמָתָֽהּ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): kּ֥ushsh 'atzema֛h umitzera֖yim ve'e֣yn qe֑tzeh pּ֣ut velubi֔ym hay֖u bּe'ezerateֽke׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Ethiopia and Egypt were her strength, and it was infinite; Put and Lubim were your helpers.

כּ֥וּשׁ עָצְמָ֛ה וּמִצְרַ֖יִם וְאֵ֣ין קֵ֑צֶה פּ֣וּט וְלוּבִ֔ים הָי֖וּ בְּעֶזְרָתֵֽךְ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): gּam-hi֗y lagּolah֙ haleka֣h bashshּe֔biy gּa֧m 'olale֛yha yerutּeshsh֖u bּero֣'shsh kּal-chutz֑ot ve'al-nikebּadּe֨yha֙ yadּ֣u gora֔l vekal-gּedole֖yha rutּeq֥u bazּiqּiֽym׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Yet was she carried away, she went into captivity: her young children also were dashed in pieces at the top of all the streets: and they cast lots for her honourable men, and all her great men were bound in chains.

גַּם־הִ֗יא לַגֹּלָה֙ הָלְכָ֣ה בַשֶּׁ֔בִי גַּ֧ם עֹלָלֶ֛יהָ יְרֻטְּשׁ֖וּ בְּרֹ֣אשׁ כָּל־חוּצ֑וֹת וְעַל־נִכְבַּדֶּ֨יהָ֙ יַדּ֣וּ גוֹרָ֔ל וְכָל־גְּדוֹלֶ֖יהָ רֻתְּק֥וּ בַזִּקִּֽים׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): gּam-'a֣tּe tּishshekּeri֔y tּehi֖y naֽ'alama֑h gּam-'a֛tּe tּebaqeshshi֥y ma'֖oz me'oyeֽb׃

Edified Edition (EDE)You also shall be drunken: you shall be hid, you also shall seek strength because of the enemy.

גַּם־אַ֣תְּ תִּשְׁכְּרִ֔י תְּהִ֖י נַֽעֲלָמָ֑ה גַּם־אַ֛תְּ תְּבַקְשִׁ֥י מָע֖וֹז מֵאוֹיֵֽב׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): kּa֨l-mibetzara֔yike tּe'eni֖ym 'im-bּikּuri֑ym 'im-yinּ֕o'u venapel֖u 'al-pּi֥y 'okeֽl׃

Edified Edition (EDE)All your strong holds shall be like fig trees with the firstripe figs: if they be shaken, they shall even fall into the mouth of the eater.

כָּ֨ל־מִבְצָרַ֔יִךְ תְּאֵנִ֖ים עִם־בִּכּוּרִ֑ים אִם־יִנּ֕וֹעוּ וְנָפְל֖וּ עַל־פִּ֥י אוֹכֵֽל׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): hinּe֨h 'amּe֤ke nashshiym֙ bּeqirebּe֔ke le'o֣yeba֔yike pּat֥ocha nipetּech֖u shsha'are֣y 'aretze֑ke 'akela֥h 'e֖shsh bּeriychaֽyik׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Behold, your people in the midst of you are women: the gates of your land shall be set wide open to your enemies: the fire shall devour your bars.

הִנֵּ֨ה עַמֵּ֤ךְ נָשִׁים֙ בְּקִרְבֵּ֔ךְ לְאֹ֣יְבַ֔יִךְ פָּת֥וֹחַ נִפְתְּח֖וּ שַׁעֲרֵ֣י אַרְצֵ֑ךְ אָכְלָ֥ה אֵ֖שׁ בְּרִיחָֽיִך׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): me֤y matzor֙ shshaֽ'abiy-la֔ke chazּeqi֖y mibetzara֑yike bּo֧'iy batּi֛yt verimesi֥y bacho֖mer hachazi֥yqiy malebּeֽn׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Draw you waters for the siege, fortify your strong holds: go into clay, and tread the morter, make strong the brickkiln.

מֵ֤י מָצוֹר֙ שַֽׁאֲבִי־לָ֔ךְ חַזְּקִ֖י מִבְצָרָ֑יִךְ בֹּ֧אִי בַטִּ֛יט וְרִמְסִ֥י בַחֹ֖מֶר הַחֲזִ֥יקִי מַלְבֵּֽן׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): shsha֚m tּo'kele֣ke 'e֔shsh tּakeriyte֣ke che֔reb tּo'kele֖ke kּayּa֑leq hitekּabּe֣d kּayּe֔leq hiֽtekּabּedi֖y kּa'arebּeֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)There shall the fire devour you; the sword shall cut you off, it shall eat you up like the cankerworm: make yourself many as the cankerworm, make yourself many as the locusts.

שָׁ֚ם תֹּאכְלֵ֣ךְ אֵ֔שׁ תַּכְרִיתֵ֣ךְ חֶ֔רֶב תֹּאכְלֵ֖ךְ כַּיָּ֑לֶק הִתְכַּבֵּ֣ד כַּיֶּ֔לֶק הִֽתְכַּבְּדִ֖י כָּאַרְבֶּֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): hirebּeyt֙ roֽkela֔yike mikּokebe֖y hashshּama֑yim ye֥leq pּashsha֖t vayּa'oֽp׃

Edified Edition (EDE)You hast multiplied your merchants above the stars of heaven: the cankerworm spoils, and fles away.

הִרְבֵּית֙ רֹֽכְלַ֔יִךְ מִכּוֹכְבֵ֖י הַשָּׁמָ֑יִם יֶ֥לֶק פָּשַׁ֖ט וַיָּעֹֽף׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): minּezara֨yike֙ kּaֽ'arebּe֔h vetapesera֖yike kּeg֣ob gּoba֑y haֽchoni֤ym bּagּederot֙ bּey֣om qara֔h shshe֤meshsh zaֽrechah֙ venoda֔d veloֽ'-noda֥ meqom֖o 'ayּaֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Your crowned are as the locusts, and your captains as the great grasshoppers, which camp in the hedges in the cold day, but when the sun arises they flee away, and their place is not known where they are.

מִנְּזָרַ֨יִךְ֙ כָּֽאַרְבֶּ֔ה וְטַפְסְרַ֖יִךְ כְּג֣וֹב גֹּבָ֑י הַֽחוֹנִ֤ים בַּגְּדֵרוֹת֙ בְּי֣וֹם קָרָ֔ה שֶׁ֤מֶשׁ זָֽרְחָה֙ וְנוֹדַ֔ד וְלֹֽא־נוֹדַ֥ע מְקוֹמ֖וֹ אַיָּֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): nam֤u ro'e֨yka֙ me֣leke 'ashshּ֔ur yishshekּen֖u 'adּiyre֑yka napo֧shshu 'amּeka֛ 'al-hehari֖ym ve'e֥yn meqabּeֽtz׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Your shepherds slumber, O king of Assyria: your nobles shall dwell in the dust: your people is scattered upon the mountains, and no man gathers them.

נָמ֤וּ רֹעֶ֨יךָ֙ מֶ֣לֶךְ אַשּׁ֔וּר יִשְׁכְּנ֖וּ אַדִּירֶ֑יךָ נָפֹ֧שׁוּ עַמְּךָ֛ עַל־הֶהָרִ֖ים וְאֵ֥ין מְקַבֵּֽץ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): eyn-kּeha֣h leshshibere֔ka nachela֖h makּate֑ka kּo֣l ׀ shshome'e֣y shshime'aka֗ tּa֤qe'u kap֙ 'ale֔yka kּi֗y 'al-mi֛y loֽ'-'abera֥h ra'ateka֖ tּamiֽyd׃

Edified Edition (EDE)There is no healing of your bruise; your wound is grievous: all that hear the bruit of you shall clap the hands over you: for upon whom has not your wickedness passed continually?

אֵין־כֵּהָ֣ה לְשִׁבְרֶ֔ךָ נַחְלָ֖ה מַכָּתֶ֑ךָ כֹּ֣ל ׀ שֹׁמְעֵ֣י שִׁמְעֲךָ֗ תָּ֤קְעוּ כַף֙ עָלֶ֔יךָ כִּ֗י עַל־מִ֛י לֹֽא־עָבְרָ֥ה רָעָתְךָ֖ תָּמִֽיד׃
