Chapter 12

Edified Edition (EDE)These were the priests and Levites who returned with Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel and with Jeshua: Seraiah, Jeremiah, Ezra,

וְאֵ֨לֶּה֙ הַכֹּהֲנִ֣ים וְהַלְוִיִּ֔ם אֲשֶׁ֥ר עָל֛וּ עִם־זְרֻבָּבֶ֥ל בֶּן־שְׁאַלְתִּיאֵ֖ל וְיֵשׁ֑וּעַ שְׂרָיָ֥ה יִרְמְיָ֖ה עֶזְרָֽא׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Shemaiah, Joiarib, Jedaiah,

שְׁמַֽעְיָ֥ה וְיוֹיָרִ֖יב יְדַֽעְיָֽה׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Sallu, Amok, Hilkiah and Jedaiah. These were the leaders of the priests and their associates in the days of Jeshua.

סַלּ֣וּ עָמ֔וֹק חִלְקִיָּ֖ה יְדַֽעְיָ֑ה אֵ֣לֶּה רָאשֵׁ֧י הַכֹּהֲנִ֛ים וַאֲחֵיהֶ֖ם בִּימֵ֥י יֵשֽׁוּעַ׃פ

Phonetic (Hebrew): vehaleviyּi֗m yeshsh֧u'a bּinּ֛uy qademiy'e֥l shsherebeya֖h yehuda֣h matּaneya֑h 'aֽl-huyּed֖ot h֥u ve'echaֽyv׃

Edified Edition (EDE)The Levites were Jeshua, Binnui, Kadmiel, Sherebiah, Judah, and also Mattaniah, who, together with his associates, was in charge of the songs of thanksgiving.

וְהַלְוִיִּ֗ם יֵשׁ֧וּעַ בִּנּ֛וּי קַדְמִיאֵ֥ל שֵׁרֵבְיָ֖ה יְהוּדָ֣ה מַתַּנְיָ֑ה עַֽל־הֻיְּד֖וֹת ה֥וּא וְאֶחָֽיו׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ubaqebּuֽqeya֨h v'nv ve'unּi֧y 'acheyhe֛m lenegedּa֖m lemishshemarֽot׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Bakbukiah and Unni, their associates, stood opposite them in the services.

וּבַקְבֻּֽקְיָ֨ה וענו וְעֻנִּ֧י אֲחֵיהֶ֛ם לְנֶגְדָּ֖ם לְמִשְׁמָרֽוֹת׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): veyeshsh֖u'a holi֣yd 'et-yֽoyaqi֑ym veyֽoyaqiym֙ holi֣yd 'et-'eleyashshi֔yb ve'eleyashshi֖yb 'et-yoyadaֽ'׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Jeshua was the father of Joiakim, Joiakim the father of Eliashib, Eliashib the father of Joiada,

וְיֵשׁ֖וּעַ הוֹלִ֣יד אֶת־יֽוֹיָקִ֑ים וְיֽוֹיָקִים֙ הוֹלִ֣יד אֶת־אֶלְיָשִׁ֔יב וְאֶלְיָשִׁ֖יב אֶת־יוֹיָדָֽע׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): veyoyada'֙ holi֣yd 'et-yonata֔n veyonata֖n holi֥yd 'et-yadּֽu'a׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Joiada the father of Jonathan, and Jonathan the father of Jaddua.

וְיוֹיָדָע֙ הוֹלִ֣יד אֶת־יוֹנָתָ֔ן וְיוֹנָתָ֖ן הוֹלִ֥יד אֶת־יַדּֽוּעַ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ubiymey֙ yֽoyaqi֔ym hay֥u kohani֖ym ra'shshe֣y ha'ab֑ot lishseraya֣h meraya֔h leyiremeya֖h chananeyaֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)In the days of Joiakim, these were the heads of the priestly families: of Seraiah’s family, Meraiah; of Jeremiah’s, Hananiah;

וּבִימֵי֙ יֽוֹיָקִ֔ים הָי֥וּ כֹהֲנִ֖ים רָאשֵׁ֣י הָאָב֑וֹת לִשְׂרָיָ֣ה מְרָיָ֔ה לְיִרְמְיָ֖ה חֲנַנְיָֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): le'ezera֣ meshshulּa֔m la'amareya֖h yehochanaֽn׃

Edified Edition (EDE)of Ezra’s, Meshullam; of Amariah’s, Jehohanan;

לְעֶזְרָ֣א מְשֻׁלָּ֔ם לַאֲמַרְיָ֖ה יְהוֹחָנָֽן׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): lmlvky limeli֨yku֙ yֽonata֔n lishshebaneya֖h yoseֽp׃

Edified Edition (EDE)of Malluch’s, Jonathan; of Shecaniah’s, Joseph;

למלוכי לִמְלִ֨יכוּ֙ יֽוֹנָתָ֔ן לִשְׁבַנְיָ֖ה יוֹסֵֽף׃

Edified Edition (EDE)of Harim’s, Adna; of Meremoth’s, Helkai;

לְחָרִ֣ם עַדְנָ֔א לִמְרָי֖וֹת חֶלְקָֽי׃

Edified Edition (EDE)of Abijah’s, Zicri; of Miniamin’s and of Moadiah’s, Piltai;

לַאֲבִיָּ֖ה זִכְרִ֑י לְמִ֨נְיָמִ֔ין לְמוֹעַדְיָ֖ה פִּלְטָֽי׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): lebilegּa֣h shshamּ֔u'a liֽshshema'eya֖h yehonataֽn׃

Edified Edition (EDE)of Bilgah’s, Shammua; of Shemaiah’s, Jehonathan;

לְבִלְגָּ֣ה שַׁמּ֔וּעַ לִֽשְׁמַעְיָ֖ה יְהוֹנָתָֽן׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): uleyoyari֣yb matּena֔y liֽydaֽ'eya֖h 'uzּiֽy׃

Edified Edition (EDE)of Joiarib’s, Mattenai; of Jedaiah’s, Uzzi;

וּלְיוֹיָרִ֣יב מַתְּנַ֔י לִֽידַֽעְיָ֖ה עֻזִּֽי׃

Edified Edition (EDE)of Sallu’s, Kallai; of Amok’s, Eber;

לְסַלַּ֥י קַלָּ֖י לְעָמ֥וֹק עֵֽבֶר׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): lechileqiyּa֣h chashshabeya֔h liֽydaֽ'eya֖h netane'eֽl׃

Edified Edition (EDE)of Hilkiah’s, Hashabiah; of Jedaiah’s, Nethanel.

לְחִלְקִיָּ֣ה חֲשַׁבְיָ֔ה לִֽידַֽעְיָ֖ה נְתַנְאֵֽל׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): haleviyּim֩ bּiyme֨y 'eleyashshi֜yb yoyada֤ veyochanan֙ veyadּ֔u'a kּetubi֖ym ra'shshe֣y 'ab֑ot vehakּo֣hani֔ym 'al-malek֖ut dּareya֥veshsh hapּaֽresiֽy׃p

Edified Edition (EDE)The family heads of the Levites in the days of Eliashib, Joiada, Johanan and Jaddua, as well as those of the priests, were recorded during the reign of Darius the Persian.

הַלְוִיִּם֩ בִּימֵ֨י אֶלְיָשִׁ֜יב יוֹיָדָ֤ע וְיוֹחָנָן֙ וְיַדּ֔וּעַ כְּתוּבִ֖ים רָאשֵׁ֣י אָב֑וֹת וְהַכֹּ֣הֲנִ֔ים עַל־מַלְכ֖וּת דָּרְיָ֥וֶשׁ הַפָּֽרְסִֽי׃פ

Phonetic (Hebrew): bּene֤y leviy֙ ra'shshe֣y haֽ'ab֔ot kּetubi֕ym 'al-se֖per dּibere֣y hayּami֑ym ve'ad-yeme֖y yֽochana֥n bּen-'eleyashshiֽyb׃

Edified Edition (EDE)The family heads among the descendants of Levi up to the time of Johanan son of Eliashib were recorded in the book of the annals.

בְּנֵ֤י לֵוִי֙ רָאשֵׁ֣י הָֽאָב֔וֹת כְּתוּבִ֕ים עַל־סֵ֖פֶר דִּבְרֵ֣י הַיָּמִ֑ים וְעַד־יְמֵ֖י יֽוֹחָנָ֥ן בֶּן־אֶלְיָשִֽׁיב׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vera'shshe֣y ha֠leviyּim chashshabeya֨h shsheֽrebeya֜h veyeshsh֤u'a bּen-qademiy'el֙ va'acheyhe֣m lenegedּa֔m lehalּe֣l lehod֔ot bּemitzeva֖t dּavi֣yd 'iyshsh-ha'elohi֑ym mishshema֖r le'umּa֥t mishshemaֽr׃

Edified Edition (EDE)And the leaders of the Levites were Hashabiah, Sherebiah, Jeshua son of Kadmiel, and their associates, who stood opposite them to give praise and thanksgiving, one group responding to another, as prescribed by David the man of God.

וְרָאשֵׁ֣י הַ֠לְוִיִּם חֲשַׁבְיָ֨ה שֵֽׁרֵבְיָ֜ה וְיֵשׁ֤וּעַ בֶּן־קַדְמִיאֵל֙ וַאֲחֵיהֶ֣ם לְנֶגְדָּ֔ם לְהַלֵּ֣ל לְהוֹד֔וֹת בְּמִצְוַ֖ת דָּוִ֣יד אִישׁ־הָאֱלֹהִ֑ים מִשְׁמָ֖ר לְעֻמַּ֥ת מִשְׁמָֽר׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): matּaneya֧h ubaqebּuֽqeya֛h 'obadeya֥h meshshulּa֖m talem֣on 'aqּ֑ub shshomeri֤ym shshֽo'ariym֙ mishshema֔r bּa'asupּe֖y hashshּe'ariֽym׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Mattaniah, Bakbukiah, Obadiah, Meshullam, Talmon and Akkub were gatekeepers who guarded the storerooms at the gates.

מַתַּנְיָ֧ה וּבַקְבֻּֽקְיָ֛ה עֹבַדְיָ֥ה מְשֻׁלָּ֖ם טַלְמ֣וֹן עַקּ֑וּב שֹׁמְרִ֤ים שֽׁוֹעֲרִים֙ מִשְׁמָ֔ר בַּאֲסֻפֵּ֖י הַשְּׁעָרִֽים׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): e֕lּeh bּiyme֛y yoyaqi֥ym bּen-yeshsh֖u'a bּen-yotzada֑q ubiymey֙ nechemeya֣h hapּecha֔h ve'ezera֥ hakּohe֖n hasּopeֽr׃p

Edified Edition (EDE)They served in the days of Joiakim son of Jeshua, the son of Jozadak, and in the days of Nehemiah the governor and Ezra the priest and scribe.

אֵ֕לֶּה בִּימֵ֛י יוֹיָקִ֥ים בֶּן־יֵשׁ֖וּעַ בֶּן־יוֹצָדָ֑ק וּבִימֵי֙ נְחֶמְיָ֣ה הַפֶּחָ֔ה וְעֶזְרָ֥א הַכֹּהֵ֖ן הַסּוֹפֵֽר׃פ

Phonetic (Hebrew): ubachanukּa֞t choma֣t yerushshalai֗m bּiqeshsh֤u 'et-haleviyּim֙ mikּal-meq֣omota֔m lahabiy'a֖m liֽyrushshala֑im la'ashso֨t chanukּa֤h veshsimechah֙ ubetod֣ot ubeshshi֔yr metziletּa֖yim nebali֥ym ubekinּorֽot׃

Edified Edition (EDE)At the dedication of the wall of Jerusalem, the Levites were sought out from where they lived and were brought to Jerusalem to celebrate joyfully the dedication with songs of thanksgiving and with the music of cymbals, harps and lyres.

וּבַחֲנֻכַּ֞ת חוֹמַ֣ת יְרוּשָׁלִַ֗ם בִּקְשׁ֤וּ אֶת־הַלְוִיִּם֙ מִכָּל־מְק֣וֹמֹתָ֔ם לַהֲבִיאָ֖ם לִֽירוּשָׁלִָ֑ם לַעֲשֹׂ֨ת חֲנֻכָּ֤ה וְשִׂמְחָה֙ וּבְתוֹד֣וֹת וּבְשִׁ֔יר מְצִלְתַּ֖יִם נְבָלִ֥ים וּבְכִנֹּרֽוֹת׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּe'a֣sep֔u bּene֖y hameshshoreri֑ym umin-hakּikּar֙ sebiyb֣ot yerushshalai֔m umin-chatzere֖y netopatiֽy׃

Edified Edition (EDE)The singers also were brought together from the region around Jerusalem, from the villages of the Netophathites,

וַיֵּאָ֣סְפ֔וּ בְּנֵ֖י הַמְשֹׁרְרִ֑ים וּמִן־הַכִּכָּר֙ סְבִיב֣וֹת יְרוּשָׁלִַ֔ם וּמִן־חַצְרֵ֖י נְטֹפָתִֽי׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): umibּeyt֙ hagּilegּa֔l umishsּed֥ot gּe֖ba ve'azema֑vet kּi֣y chatzeri֗ym bּan֤u lahem֙ hameshsho֣rari֔ym sebiyb֖ot yerushshalaiֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)from Beth Gilgal, and from the area of Geba and AzmavS, for the singers had built villages for themselves around Jerusalem.

וּמִבֵּית֙ הַגִּלְגָּ֔ל וּמִשְּׂד֥וֹת גֶּ֖בַע וְעַזְמָ֑וֶת כִּ֣י חֲצֵרִ֗ים בָּנ֤וּ לָהֶם֙ הַמְשֹׁ֣רֲרִ֔ים סְבִיב֖וֹת יְרוּשָׁלִָֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiֽtּahar֔u hakּohani֖ym vehaleviyּi֑m vaֽyetaharu֙ 'et-ha'a֔m ve'et-hashshּe'ari֖ym ve'eֽt-hachomaֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)When the priests and Levites had purified themselves ceremonially, they purified the people, the gates and the wall.

וַיִּֽטַּהֲר֔וּ הַכֹּהֲנִ֖ים וְהַלְוִיִּ֑ם וַֽיְטַהֲרוּ֙ אֶת־הָעָ֔ם וְאֶת־הַשְּׁעָרִ֖ים וְאֶֽת־הַחוֹמָֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): va'a'aleh֙ 'et-shsare֣y yehuda֔h me'a֖l lachoma֑h va'a'ami֡ydah shshetּe֣y todot֩ gּedolo֨t vetahaluko֤t layּamiyn֙ me'a֣l lachoma֔h leshsha֖'ar ha'ashshepּoֽt׃

Edified Edition (EDE)I had the leaders of Judah go up on top of the wall. I also appointed two large choirs to give thanks. One was to proceed on top of the wall to the right, toward the Dung Gate.

וָאַעֲלֶה֙ אֶת־שָׂרֵ֣י יְהוּדָ֔ה מֵעַ֖ל לַחוֹמָ֑ה וָאַעֲמִ֡ידָה שְׁתֵּ֣י תוֹדֹת֩ גְּדוֹלֹ֨ת וְתַהֲלֻכֹ֤ת לַיָּמִין֙ מֵעַ֣ל לַחוֹמָ֔ה לְשַׁ֖עַר הָאַשְׁפֹּֽת׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּe֤leke 'achareyhem֙ hoshsha֣'eya֔h vachatzi֖y shsare֥y yehudaֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Hoshaiah and half the leaders of Judah followed them,

וַיֵּ֤לֶךְ אַחֲרֵיהֶם֙ הוֹשַׁ֣עְיָ֔ה וַחֲצִ֖י שָׂרֵ֥י יְהוּדָֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): va'azareya֥h 'ezera֖ umeshshulּaֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)along with Azariah, Ezra, Meshullam,

וַעֲזַרְיָ֥ה עֶזְרָ֖א וּמְשֻׁלָּֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): yehudah֙ ubineyami֔n uֽshshemaֽ'eya֖h veyiremeyaֽh׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)Judah, Benjamin, Shemaiah, Jeremiah,

יְהוּדָה֙ וּבִנְיָמִ֔ן וּֽשְׁמַֽעְיָ֖ה וְיִרְמְיָֽה׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): umibּene֥y hakּohani֖ym bּachatzotzer֑ot zekareya֨h ben-yֽonata֜n bּen-shshemaֽ'eya֗h bּen-matּaneyah֙ bּen-mi֣ykaya֔h bּen-zakּ֖ur bּen-'asaֽp׃

Edified Edition (EDE)and some priests with trumpets, and also Zechariah son of Jonathan, the son of Shemaiah, the son of Mattaniah, the son of Micaiah, the son of Zaccur, the son of Asaph,

וּמִבְּנֵ֥י הַכֹּהֲנִ֖ים בַּחֲצֹצְר֑וֹת זְכַרְיָ֨ה בֶן־יֽוֹנָתָ֜ן בֶּן־שְׁמַֽעְיָ֗ה בֶּן־מַתַּנְיָה֙ בֶּן־מִ֣יכָיָ֔ה בֶּן־זַכּ֖וּר בֶּן־אָסָֽף׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): veֽ'echa֡yv shsheֽma'eya֡h va'azare'e֡l miֽlala֡y gּiֽlala֡y ma'a֞y netane'e֤l viֽyhudah֙ chana֔niy bּikeley-shshi֥yr dּavi֖yd 'i֣yshsh ha'elohi֑ym ve'ezera֥ hasּope֖r lipeneyheֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)and his associates, Shemaiah, Azarel, Milalai, Gilalai, Maai, Nethanel, Judah and Hanani, with musical instruments prescribed by David the man of God. Ezra the scribe led the procession.

וְֽאֶחָ֡יו שְֽׁמַעְיָ֡ה וַעֲזַרְאֵ֡ל מִֽלֲלַ֡י גִּֽלֲלַ֡י מָעַ֞י נְתַנְאֵ֤ל וִֽיהוּדָה֙ חֲנָ֔נִי בִּכְלֵי־שִׁ֥יר דָּוִ֖יד אִ֣ישׁ הָאֱלֹהִ֑ים וְעֶזְרָ֥א הַסּוֹפֵ֖ר לִפְנֵיהֶֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'al֩ shsha֨'ar ha'a֜yin venegedּa֗m 'alu֙ 'aֽl-ma'alot֙ 'i֣yr dּavi֔yd bּaֽmּa'ale֖h lachoma֑h me'al֙ lebe֣yt dּavi֔yd ve'a֛d shsha֥'ar hamּa֖yim mizeraֽch׃

Edified Edition (EDE)At the Fountain Gate they continued directly up the steps of the City of David on the ascent to the wall and passed above the house of David to the Water Gate on the east.

וְעַל֩ שַׁ֨עַר הָעַ֜יִן וְנֶגְדָּ֗ם עָלוּ֙ עַֽל־מַעֲלוֹת֙ עִ֣יר דָּוִ֔יד בַּֽמַּעֲלֶ֖ה לַחוֹמָ֑ה מֵעַל֙ לְבֵ֣ית דָּוִ֔יד וְעַ֛ד שַׁ֥עַר הַמַּ֖יִם מִזְרָֽח׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vehatּoda֧h hashshּeni֛yt hahole֥ket lem֖o'l va'ani֣y 'achare֑yha vachatzi֨y ha'a֜m me'a֣l lehachoma֗h me'al֙ lemigedּa֣l hatּanּuri֔ym ve'a֖d hachoma֥h harechabaֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)The second choir proceeded to the left. I followed them on top of the wall, together with half the people, past the Tower of the Ovens to the Broad Wall,

וְהַתּוֹדָ֧ה הַשֵּׁנִ֛ית הַהוֹלֶ֥כֶת לְמ֖וֹאל וַאֲנִ֣י אַחֲרֶ֑יהָ וַחֲצִ֨י הָעָ֜ם מֵעַ֣ל לְהַחוֹמָ֗ה מֵעַל֙ לְמִגְדַּ֣ל הַתַּנּוּרִ֔ים וְעַ֖ד הַחוֹמָ֥ה הָרְחָבָֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ume'a֣l leshshaֽ'ar-'e֠perayim ve'al-shsha֨'ar hayeshshana֜h ve'al-shsha֣'ar hadּagi֗ym umigedּa֤l chanane'el֙ umigedּa֣l hamּe'a֔h ve'a֖d shsha֣'ar hatzּo֑'n ve'a֣med֔u bּeshsha֖'ar hamּatּaraֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)over the Gate of Ephraim, the Jeshanah Gate, the Fish Gate, the Tower of Hananel and the Tower of the Hundred, as far as the Sheep Gate. At the Gate of the Guard they stopped.

וּמֵעַ֣ל לְשַֽׁעַר־אֶ֠פְרַיִם וְעַל־שַׁ֨עַר הַיְשָׁנָ֜ה וְעַל־שַׁ֣עַר הַדָּגִ֗ים וּמִגְדַּ֤ל חֲנַנְאֵל֙ וּמִגְדַּ֣ל הַמֵּאָ֔ה וְעַ֖ד שַׁ֣עַר הַצֹּ֑אן וְעָ֣מְד֔וּ בְּשַׁ֖עַר הַמַּטָּרָֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vaֽtּa'amo֛denah shshetּe֥y hatּodo֖t bּebe֣yt ha'elohi֑ym va'ani֕y vachatzi֥y hasּegani֖ym 'imּiֽy׃

Edified Edition (EDE)The two choirs that gave thanks then took their places in the house of God; so did I, together with half the officials,

וַֽתַּעֲמֹ֛דְנָה שְׁתֵּ֥י הַתּוֹדֹ֖ת בְּבֵ֣ית הָאֱלֹהִ֑ים וַאֲנִ֕י וַחֲצִ֥י הַסְּגָנִ֖ים עִמִּֽי׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vehakּohani֡ym 'eleyaqi֡ym ma'ashseya֡h mi֠neyamiyn miykaya֧h 'eleyo'eyna֛y zekareya֥h chananeya֖h bּachatzotzerֽot׃

Edified Edition (EDE)as well as the priests, Eliakim, Maaseiah, Miniamin, Micaiah, Elioenai, Zechariah and Hananiah with their trumpets,

וְהַכֹּהֲנִ֡ים אֶלְיָקִ֡ים מַעֲשֵׂיָ֡ה מִ֠נְיָמִין מִיכָיָ֧ה אֶלְיוֹעֵינַ֛י זְכַרְיָ֥ה חֲנַנְיָ֖ה בַּחֲצֹצְרֽוֹת׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): uma'ashseya֨h uֽshshemaֽ'eya֜h ve'ele'aza֧r ve'uzּi֛y viֽyhochana֥n umalekּiyּa֖h ve'eyla֣m va'a֑zer vayּashshemi֨y'u֙ hameshsho֣reri֔ym veyiֽzeracheya֖h hapּaqiֽyd׃

Edified Edition (EDE)and also Maaseiah, Shemaiah, Eleazar, Uzzi, Jehohanan, Malkijah, Elam and Ezer. The choirs sang under the direction of Jezrahiah.

וּמַעֲשֵׂיָ֨ה וּֽשְׁמַֽעְיָ֜ה וְאֶלְעָזָ֧ר וְעֻזִּ֛י וִֽיהוֹחָנָ֥ן וּמַלְכִּיָּ֖ה וְעֵילָ֣ם וָעָ֑זֶר וַיַּשְׁמִ֨יעוּ֙ הַמְשֹׁ֣רְרִ֔ים וְיִֽזְרַחְיָ֖ה הַפָּקִֽיד׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּizebּech֣u bayּom-ha֠hu zebachi֨ym gּedoli֜ym vayּishsema֗chu kּi֤y ha'elohiym֙ shsimּecham֙ shsimecha֣h gedola֔h vega֧m hanּashshi֛ym vehayeladi֖ym shsame֑chu vatּishshּama֛ shsimecha֥t yerushshala֖im merachֽoq׃

Edified Edition (EDE)And on that day they offered great sacrifices, rejoicing because God had given them great joy. The women and children also rejoiced. The sound of rejoicing in Jerusalem could be heard far away.

וַיִּזְבְּח֣וּ בַיּוֹם־הַ֠הוּא זְבָחִ֨ים גְּדוֹלִ֜ים וַיִּשְׂמָ֗חוּ כִּ֤י הָאֱלֹהִים֙ שִׂמְּחָם֙ שִׂמְחָ֣ה גְדוֹלָ֔ה וְגַ֧ם הַנָּשִׁ֛ים וְהַיְלָדִ֖ים שָׂמֵ֑חוּ וַתִּשָּׁמַ֛ע שִׂמְחַ֥ת יְרוּשָׁלִַ֖ם מֵרָחֽוֹק׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּipּaqed֣u bayּom֩ hah֨u 'anashshi֜ym 'al-hanּeshshak֗ot la'֨otzar֥ot latּerumot֮ lare'shshi֣yt velamּaֽ'ashserot֒ liken֨os bּahe֜m lishsede֤y he'ariym֙ mena'֣ot hatּora֔h lakּohani֖ym velaleviyּi֑m kּi֚y shsimecha֣t yehuda֔h 'al-hakּohani֥ym ve'al-haleviyּi֖m ha'omediֽym׃

Edified Edition (EDE)At that time men were appointed to be in charge of the storerooms for the contributions, firstfruits and tithes. From the fields around the towns they were to bring into the storerooms the portions required by the Law for the priests and the Levites, for Judah was pleased with the ministering priests and Levites.

וַיִּפָּקְד֣וּ בַיּוֹם֩ הַה֨וּא אֲנָשִׁ֜ים עַל־הַנְּשָׁכ֗וֹת לָא֨וֹצָר֥וֹת לַתְּרוּמוֹת֮ לָרֵאשִׁ֣ית וְלַמַּֽעַשְׂרוֹת֒ לִכְנ֨וֹס בָּהֶ֜ם לִשְׂדֵ֤י הֶעָרִים֙ מְנָא֣וֹת הַתּוֹרָ֔ה לַכֹּהֲנִ֖ים וְלַלְוִיִּ֑ם כִּ֚י שִׂמְחַ֣ת יְהוּדָ֔ה עַל־הַכֹּהֲנִ֥ים וְעַל־הַלְוִיִּ֖ם הָעֹמְדִֽים׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vaֽyּishshemer֞u mishsheme֤ret 'eloֽheyhem֙ umishsheme֣ret haֽtּahora֔h vehameshshoreri֖ym vehashshּo'ari֑ym kּemitzeva֥t dּavi֖yd shshelomo֥h benֽo׃

Edified Edition (EDE)They performed the service of their God and the service of purification, as did the singers and gatekeepers, in accordance with the commands of David and his son Solomon.

וַֽיִּשְׁמְר֞וּ מִשְׁמֶ֤רֶת אֱלֹֽהֵיהֶם֙ וּמִשְׁמֶ֣רֶת הַֽטָּהֳרָ֔ה וְהַמְשֹׁרְרִ֖ים וְהַשֹּׁעֲרִ֑ים כְּמִצְוַ֥ת דָּוִ֖יד שְׁלֹמֹ֥ה בְנֽוֹ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): kּiֽy-biyme֥y davi֛yd ve'asa֖p miqּe֑dem r'sh ra'shshey֙ hameshsho֣reri֔ym veshshiyr-tּehilּa֥h vehod֖ot leֽ'lohiֽym׃

Edified Edition (EDE)For long ago, in the days of David and Asaph, there had been directors for the singers and for the songs of praise and thanksgiving to God.

כִּֽי־בִימֵ֥י דָוִ֛יד וְאָסָ֖ף מִקֶּ֑דֶם ראש רָאשֵׁי֙ הַמְשֹׁ֣רְרִ֔ים וְשִׁיר־תְּהִלָּ֥ה וְהֹד֖וֹת לֵֽאלֹהִֽים׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vekal-yishsera'el֩ bּiyme֨y zerubּabe֜l ubiyme֣y nechemeya֗h noֽteni֛ym menay֛ot hameshshoreri֥ym vehashshּo'ari֖ym dּebar-y֣om bּeyom֑o umaqedּishshiym֙ laleviyּi֔m vehaleviyּi֔m maqedּishshi֖ym libene֥y 'aharoֽn׃p

Edified Edition (EDE)So in the days of Zerubbabel and of Nehemiah, all Israel contributed the daily portions for the singers and gatekeepers. They also set aside the portion for the other Levites, and the Levites set aside the portion for the descendants of Aaron.

וְכָל־יִשְׂרָאֵל֩ בִּימֵ֨י זְרֻבָּבֶ֜ל וּבִימֵ֣י נְחֶמְיָ֗ה נֹֽתְנִ֛ים מְנָי֛וֹת הַמְשֹׁרְרִ֥ים וְהַשֹּׁעֲרִ֖ים דְּבַר־י֣וֹם בְּיוֹמ֑וֹ וּמַקְדִּשִׁים֙ לַלְוִיִּ֔ם וְהַלְוִיִּ֔ם מַקְדִּשִׁ֖ים לִבְנֵ֥י אַהֲרֹֽן׃פ
