Chapter 7

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehi֗y kּa'ashshe֤r nibenetah֙ hachoma֔h va'a'ami֖yd hadּelat֑ot vayּipּaֽqed֛u hashshּo'ari֥ym vehameshshoreri֖ym vehaleviyּiֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)After the wall had been rebuilt and I had set the doors in place, the gatekeepers, the singers and the Levites were appointed.

וַיְהִ֗י כַּאֲשֶׁ֤ר נִבְנְתָה֙ הַחוֹמָ֔ה וָאַעֲמִ֖יד הַדְּלָת֑וֹת וַיִּפָּֽקְד֛וּ הַשּׁוֹעֲרִ֥ים וְהַמְשֹׁרְרִ֖ים וְהַלְוִיִּֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): va'atzaue֞h 'et-chana֣niy 'achi֗y ve'et-chananeya֛h shsa֥r habּiyra֖h 'al-yerushshala֑im kּiy-hu'֙ kּe'i֣yshsh 'eme֔t veyare֥ 'et-ha'elohi֖ym merabּiֽym׃

Edified Edition (EDE)I put in charge of Jerusalem my brother Hanani, along with Hananiah the commander of the citadel, because he was a man of integrity and feared God more than most people do.

וָאֲצַוֶּ֞ה אֶת־חֲנָ֣נִי אָחִ֗י וְאֶת־חֲנַנְיָ֛ה שַׂ֥ר הַבִּירָ֖ה עַל־יְרוּשָׁלִָ֑ם כִּי־הוּא֙ כְּאִ֣ישׁ אֱמֶ֔ת וְיָרֵ֥א אֶת־הָאֱלֹהִ֖ים מֵרַבִּֽים׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vy'mr va'oma֣r lahe֗m lo֣ yipּaֽtech֞u shsha'are֤y yerushshalai֨m֙ 'ad-cho֣m hashshּe֔meshsh ve'a֨d he֥m 'omedi֛ym yagi֥ypu hadּelat֖ot ve'echo֑zu veha'ame֗yd mishshemerot֙ yoshshebe֣y yerushshalai֔m 'i֚yshsh bּemishshemar֔o ve'i֖yshsh ne֥ged bּeytֽo׃

Edified Edition (EDE)I said to them, "The gates of Jerusalem are not to be opened until the sun is hot. While the gatekeepers are still on duty, have them shut the doors and bar them. Also appoint residents of Jerusalem as guards, some at their posts and some near their own houses."

ויאמר וָאֹמַ֣ר לָהֶ֗ם לֹ֣א יִפָּֽתְח֞וּ שַׁעֲרֵ֤י יְרוּשָׁלִַ֨ם֙ עַד־חֹ֣ם הַשֶּׁ֔מֶשׁ וְעַ֨ד הֵ֥ם עֹמְדִ֛ים יָגִ֥יפוּ הַדְּלָת֖וֹת וֶאֱחֹ֑זוּ וְהַעֲמֵ֗יד מִשְׁמְרוֹת֙ יֹשְׁבֵ֣י יְרוּשָׁלִַ֔ם אִ֚ישׁ בְּמִשְׁמָר֔וֹ וְאִ֖ישׁ נֶ֥גֶד בֵּיתֽוֹ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): veha'i֞yr rachaba֤t yada֨yim֙ ugedola֔h veha'a֥m me'a֖t bּetoka֑hּ ve'e֥yn bּatּi֖ym bּenuyiֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Now the city was large and spacious, but there were few people in it, and the houses had not yet been rebuilt.

וְהָעִ֞יר רַחֲבַ֤ת יָדַ֨יִם֙ וּגְדוֹלָ֔ה וְהָעָ֥ם מְעַ֖ט בְּתוֹכָ֑הּ וְאֵ֥ין בָּתִּ֖ים בְּנוּיִֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּitּe֤n 'elohay֙ 'el-libּi֔y va'eqebּetza֞h 'et-hachori֧ym ve'et-hasּegani֛ym ve'et-ha'a֖m lehiteyache֑shs vaֽ'emetza֗ se֤per hayּa֨chashs֙ ha'oli֣ym bּari'shshona֔h va'emetza֖ kּat֥ub bּֽo׃p

Edified Edition (EDE)So my God put it into my heart to assemble the nobles, the officials and the common people for registration by families. I found the genealogical record of those who had been the first to return. This is what I found written there:

וַיִּתֵּ֤ן אֱלֹהַי֙ אֶל־לִבִּ֔י וָאֶקְבְּצָ֞ה אֶת־הַחֹרִ֧ים וְאֶת־הַסְּגָנִ֛ים וְאֶת־הָעָ֖ם לְהִתְיַחֵ֑שׂ וָֽאֶמְצָ֗א סֵ֤פֶר הַיַּ֨חַשׂ֙ הָעוֹלִ֣ים בָּרִאשׁוֹנָ֔ה וָאֶמְצָ֖א כָּת֥וּב בּֽוֹ׃פ

Phonetic (Hebrew): e֣lּeh ׀ bּene֣y hamּediyna֗h ha'oliym֙ mishshּebi֣y hagּola֔h 'ashshe֣r hegela֔h nebukadenetzּa֖r me֣leke bּabe֑l vayּashsh֧ubu liֽyrushshala֛im veliyhuda֖h 'i֥yshsh le'iyrֽo׃

Edified Edition (EDE)These are the people of the province who came up from the captivity of the exiles whom Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon had taken captive (they returned to Jerusalem and Judah, each to his own town,

אֵ֣לֶּה ׀ בְּנֵ֣י הַמְּדִינָ֗ה הָעֹלִים֙ מִשְּׁבִ֣י הַגּוֹלָ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֣ר הֶגְלָ֔ה נְבוּכַדְנֶצַּ֖ר מֶ֣לֶךְ בָּבֶ֑ל וַיָּשׁ֧וּבוּ לִֽירוּשָׁלִַ֛ם וְלִיהוּדָ֖ה אִ֥ישׁ לְעִירֽוֹ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): habּa'i֣ym 'im-zerubּabe֗l yeshsh֡u'a nechemeya֡h 'a֠zareyah raֽ'ameya֨h nachama֜niy maredּoka֥y bּileshsha֛n misepּe֥ret bּigeva֖y nech֣um bּa'ana֑h misepּa֕r 'aneshshe֖y 'a֥m yishsera'eֽl׃s

כָּל־הַ֨נְּתִינִ֔ים וּבְנֵ֖י עַבְדֵ֣י שְׁלֹמֹ֑ה שְׁלֹ֥שׁ מֵא֖וֹת תִּשְׁעִ֥ים וּשְׁנָֽיִם׃פ

Edified Edition (EDE)The following came up from the towns of Tel Melah, Tel Harsha, Kerub, Addon and Immer, but they could not prove that their families were descended from Israel:

בְּנֵי־דְלָיָ֥ה בְנֵֽי־טוֹבִיָּ֖ה בְּנֵ֣י נְקוֹדָ֑א שֵׁ֥שׁ מֵא֖וֹת וְאַרְבָּעִ֥ים וּשְׁנָֽיִם׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): umin-hakּo֣hani֔ym bּene֥y chobayּa֖h bּene֣y haqּ֑otz bּene֣y barezilּa֗y 'ashshe֣r la֠qach mibּen֞ot bּarezilּa֤y hagּile'adiy֙ 'ishshּa֔h vayּiqּare֖ 'al-shshemaֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)And from among the priests: the descendants of Hobaiah, Hakkoz and Barzillai (a man who had married a daughter of Barzillai the Gileadite and was called by that name).

וּמִן־הַכֹּ֣הֲנִ֔ים בְּנֵ֥י חֳבַיָּ֖ה בְּנֵ֣י הַקּ֑וֹץ בְּנֵ֣י בַרְזִלַּ֗י אֲשֶׁ֣ר לָ֠קַח מִבְּנ֞וֹת בַּרְזִלַּ֤י הַגִּלְעָדִי֙ אִשָּׁ֔ה וַיִּקָּרֵ֖א עַל־שְׁמָֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): e֗lּeh bּiqeshsh֧u ketaba֛m hamּiteyacheshsi֖ym velo֣ nimetza֑ vayegoֽ'al֖u min-hakּehunּaֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)These searched for their family records, but they could not find them and so were excluded from the priesthood as unclean.

אֵ֗לֶּה בִּקְשׁ֧וּ כְתָבָ֛ם הַמִּתְיַחְשִׂ֖ים וְלֹ֣א נִמְצָ֑א וַיְגֹֽאֲל֖וּ מִן־הַכְּהֻנָּֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֤'mer hatּireshsha֨ta'֙ lahe֔m 'ashshe֥r lo'-yo'kel֖u miqּo֣deshsh haqּodashshi֑ym 'a֛d 'amo֥d hakּohe֖n le'uri֥ym vetumּiֽym׃

Edified Edition (EDE)The governor ordered them not to eat any of the most sacred food until there was a priest ministering with the Urim and Thummim.

Edified Edition (EDE)435 camels and 6,720 donkeys.

וּמִקְצָת֙ רָאשֵׁ֣י הָֽאָב֔וֹת נָתְנ֖וּ לַמְּלָאכָ֑ה הַתִּרְשָׁ֜תָא נָתַ֣ן לָאוֹצָ֗ר זָהָ֞ב דַּרְכְּמֹנִ֥ים אֶ֨לֶף֙ מִזְרָק֣וֹת חֲמִשִּׁ֔ים כָּתְנוֹת֙ כֹּֽהֲנִ֔ים שְׁלֹשִׁ֖ים וַחֲמֵ֥שׁ מֵאֽוֹת׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): umeֽra'shshe֣y haֽ'ab֗ot naֽtenu֙ le'otza֣r hamּela'ka֔h zaha֕b dּarekּemoni֖ym shshetּe֣y ribּ֑ot veke֕sep mani֖ym 'alepּa֥yim uma'taֽyim׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Some of the heads of the families contributed to the work. The governor gave to the treasury 1,000 gold drachmas, 50 bowls and 530 garments for priests.

וּמֵֽרָאשֵׁ֣י הָֽאָב֗וֹת נָֽתְנוּ֙ לְאוֹצַ֣ר הַמְּלָאכָ֔ה זָהָ֕ב דַּרְכְּמוֹנִ֖ים שְׁתֵּ֣י רִבּ֑וֹת וְכֶ֕סֶף מָנִ֖ים אַלְפַּ֥יִם וּמָאתָֽיִם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): va'ashshe֣r natenu֮ shshe'eri֣yt ha'am֒ zaha֗b dּarekּemoniym֙ shshetּe֣y ribּ֔o veke֖sep mani֣ym 'alepּa֑yim vekateno֥t kּoֽhani֖ym shshishshּi֥ym veshshibe'aֽh׃p

Edified Edition (EDE)Some of the heads of the families gave to the treasury for the work 20,000 gold drachmas and 2,200 minas of silver.

וַאֲשֶׁ֣ר נָתְנוּ֮ שְׁאֵרִ֣ית הָעָם֒ זָהָ֗ב דַּרְכְּמוֹנִים֙ שְׁתֵּ֣י רִבּ֔וֹא וְכֶ֖סֶף מָנִ֣ים אַלְפָּ֑יִם וְכָתְנֹ֥ת כֹּֽהֲנִ֖ים שִׁשִּׁ֥ים וְשִׁבְעָֽה׃פ

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּeshsheb֣u hakּohani֣ym vehaleviyּi֡m vehashshּo'ariym֩ vehameshshoreri֨ym umin-ha'a֧m vehanּetiyni֛ym vekal-yishsera'e֖l bּe'areyhe֑m vayּigּa'֙ hacho֣deshsh hashshּebiy'i֔y ubene֥y yishsera'e֖l bּe'areyheֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)The rest of the people gave 20,000 gold drachmas, 2,000 minas of silver and 67 garments for priests.

וַיֵּשְׁב֣וּ הַכֹּהֲנִ֣ים וְהַלְוִיִּ֡ם וְהַשּׁוֹעֲרִים֩ וְהַמְשֹׁרְרִ֨ים וּמִן־הָעָ֧ם וְהַנְּתִינִ֛ים וְכָל־יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל בְּעָרֵיהֶ֑ם וַיִּגַּע֙ הַחֹ֣דֶשׁ הַשְּׁבִיעִ֔י וּבְנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל בְּעָרֵיהֶֽם׃
