Nehemiah

Chapter 9
1
Phonetic (Hebrew): ubeyom֩ 'eshseri֨ym ve'arebּa'a֜h lacho֣deshsh hazּe֗h ne'esep֤u beneֽy-yishsera'el֙ bּetz֣om ubeshsaqּi֔ym va'adama֖h 'aleyheֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)On the twenty-fourth day of the same month, the Israelites gathered together, fasting and wearing sackcloth and putting dust on their heads.

וּבְיוֹם֩ עֶשְׂרִ֨ים וְאַרְבָּעָ֜ה לַחֹ֣דֶשׁ הַזֶּ֗ה נֶאֶסְפ֤וּ בְנֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ בְּצ֣וֹם וּבְשַׂקִּ֔ים וַאֲדָמָ֖ה עֲלֵיהֶֽם׃

2
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּibּaֽdelu֙ ze֣ra yishsera'e֔l mikּo֖l bּene֣y neka֑r vayּa'amed֗u vayּitevadּu֙ 'al-chatּo֣'teyhe֔m va'avon֖ot 'aboteyheֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Those of Israelite descent had separated themselves from all foreigners. They stood in their places and confessed their sins and the iniquities of their ancestors.

וַיִּבָּֽדְלוּ֙ זֶ֣רַע יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל מִכֹּ֖ל בְּנֵ֣י נֵכָ֑ר וַיַּעַמְד֗וּ וַיִּתְוַדּוּ֙ עַל־חַטֹּ֣אתֵיהֶ֔ם וַעֲוֺנ֖וֹת אֲבֹתֵיהֶֽם׃

3
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּaq֨umu֙ 'al-'ameda֔m vaֽyּiqere'֗u bּese֨per tּora֧t yehva֛h 'eloheyhe֖m rebi'i֣yt hayּ֑om urebi'iyt֙ mitevadּi֣ym umiֽshshetּachavi֔ym layhva֖h 'eloheyheֽm׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)They stood where they were and read from the Book of the Law of the LORD their God for a quarter of the day, and spent another quarter in confession and in worshipping the LORD their God.

וַיָּק֨וּמוּ֙ עַל־עָמְדָ֔ם וַֽיִּקְרְא֗וּ בְּסֵ֨פֶר תּוֹרַ֧ת יְהוָ֛ה אֱלֹהֵיהֶ֖ם רְבִעִ֣ית הַיּ֑וֹם וּרְבִעִית֙ מִתְוַדִּ֣ים וּמִֽשְׁתַּחֲוִ֔ים לַיהוָ֖ה אֱלֹהֵיהֶֽם׃פ

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֜qam 'aֽl-maֽ'ale֣h haleviyּi֗m yeshsh֨u'a ubani֜y qademiy'e֧l shshebaneya֛h bּunּi֥y shsherebeya֖h bּani֣y kena֑niy vaֽyּize'aqu֙ bּeq֣ol gּad֔ol 'el-yehva֖h 'eloheyheֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Standing on the stairs were the Levites, Jeshua, Bani, Kadmiel, Shebaniah, Bunni, Sherebiah, Bani and Kenani, who called out with loud voices to the LORD their God.

וַיָּ֜קָם עַֽל־מַֽעֲלֵ֣ה הַלְוִיִּ֗ם יֵשׁ֨וּעַ וּבָנִ֜י קַדְמִיאֵ֧ל שְׁבַנְיָ֛ה בֻּנִּ֥י שֵׁרֵבְיָ֖ה בָּנִ֣י כְנָ֑נִי וַֽיִּזְעֲקוּ֙ בְּק֣וֹל גָּד֔וֹל אֶל־יְהוָ֖ה אֱלֹהֵיהֶֽם׃

5
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo'mer֣u haleviyּi֡m yeshsh֣u'a ve֠qademiy'el bּani֨y chashshabeneya֜h shshereֽbeya֤h hֽodiyּah֙ shshebaneya֣h petaֽcheya֔h q֗umu bּaraku֙ 'et-yehva֣h 'eloֽheyke֔m min-ha'ola֖m 'ad-ha'ola֑m viybaֽreku֙ shshe֣m kּebode֔ka umeroma֥m 'al-kּal-bּeraka֖h utehilּaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then the Levites (Jeshua, Kadmiel, Bani, Hashabneiah, Sherebiah, Hodiah, Shebaniah and Pethahiah) said: "Stand up and bless [1] the LORD your God, who is from everlasting to everlasting. Blessed be your glorious name, and may it be exalted above all blessing and praise."

וַיֹּאמְר֣וּ הַלְוִיִּ֡ם יֵשׁ֣וּעַ וְ֠קַדְמִיאֵל בָּנִ֨י חֲשַׁבְנְיָ֜ה שֵׁרֵֽבְיָ֤ה הֽוֹדִיָּה֙ שְׁבַנְיָ֣ה פְתַֽחְיָ֔ה ק֗וּמוּ בָּרֲכוּ֙ אֶת־יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹֽהֵיכֶ֔ם מִן־הָעוֹלָ֖ם עַד־הָעוֹלָ֑ם וִיבָֽרְכוּ֙ שֵׁ֣ם כְּבוֹדֶ֔ךָ וּמְרוֹמַ֥ם עַל־כָּל־בְּרָכָ֖ה וּתְהִלָּֽה׃

6
Phonetic (Hebrew): atּah-h֣u yehvah֮ lebadּeka֒ 't 'atּa֣h 'ashsi֡yta 'eֽt-hashshּamayim֩ shsheme֨y hashshּama֜yim vekal-tzeba'a֗m ha'a֜retz vekal-'ashshe֤r 'ale֨yha֙ hayּamּiym֙ vekal-'ashshe֣r bּahe֔m ve'atּa֖h mechayּe֣h 'et-kּulּa֑m utzeba֥ hashshּama֖yim leka֥ mishshetּachaviֽym׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"You alone are the LORD. You made the heavens, even the highest heavens, and all their starry host, the earth and all that is on it, the seas and all that is in them. You give life to everything, and the multitudes of heaven worship you.

אַתָּה־ה֣וּא יְהוָה֮ לְבַדֶּךָ֒ את אַתָּ֣ה עָשִׂ֡יתָ אֶֽת־הַשָּׁמַיִם֩ שְׁמֵ֨י הַשָּׁמַ֜יִם וְכָל־צְבָאָ֗ם הָאָ֜רֶץ וְכָל־אֲשֶׁ֤ר עָלֶ֨יהָ֙ הַיַּמִּים֙ וְכָל־אֲשֶׁ֣ר בָּהֶ֔ם וְאַתָּ֖ה מְחַיֶּ֣ה אֶת־כֻּלָּ֑ם וּצְבָ֥א הַשָּׁמַ֖יִם לְךָ֥ מִשְׁתַּחֲוִֽים׃

7
Phonetic (Hebrew): atּah-hu'֙ yehva֣h ha'elohi֔ym 'ashshe֤r bּacha֨retּa֙ bּe'abera֔m vehotze't֖o me'֣ur kּashsedּi֑ym veshsa֥metּa shshּem֖o 'aberahaֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"You are the LORD God, who chose Abram and brought him out of Ur of the Chaldeans and named him Abraham.

אַתָּה־הוּא֙ יְהוָ֣ה הָאֱלֹהִ֔ים אֲשֶׁ֤ר בָּחַ֨רְתָּ֙ בְּאַבְרָ֔ם וְהוֹצֵאת֖וֹ מֵא֣וּר כַּשְׂדִּ֑ים וְשַׂ֥מְתָּ שְּׁמ֖וֹ אַבְרָהָֽם׃

8
Phonetic (Hebrew): umatza֣'ta 'et-lebabo֮ ne'ema֣n lepaneyka֒ vekar֨ot 'imּ֜o habּeri֗yt late֡t 'et-'eretz֩ hakּena'ani֨y hachitּi֜y ha'emori֧y vehapּerizּi֛y vehayebusi֥y vehagּiregּashshi֖y late֣t lezare'֑o vatּa֨qem֙ 'et-dּebare֔yka kּi֥y tzadּi֖yq 'aֽtּah׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"You found his heart faithful to you, and you made a covenant with him to give to his descendants the land of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Jebusites and Girgashites. You have kept your promise because you are righteous.

וּמָצָ֣אתָ אֶת־לְבָבוֹ֮ נֶאֱמָ֣ן לְפָנֶיךָ֒ וְכָר֨וֹת עִמּ֜וֹ הַבְּרִ֗ית לָתֵ֡ת אֶת־אֶרֶץ֩ הַכְּנַעֲנִ֨י הַחִתִּ֜י הָאֱמֹרִ֧י וְהַפְּרִזִּ֛י וְהַיְבוּסִ֥י וְהַגִּרְגָּשִׁ֖י לָתֵ֣ת לְזַרְע֑וֹ וַתָּ֨קֶם֙ אֶת־דְּבָרֶ֔יךָ כִּ֥י צַדִּ֖יק אָֽתָּה׃

9
Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּe֛re 'et-'oni֥y 'abote֖ynu bּemitzera֑yim ve'et-za'aqata֥m shshama֖'etּa 'al-yam-sֽup׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"You saw the suffering of our ancestors in Egypt; you heard their cry at the Red Sea.

וַתֵּ֛רֶא אֶת־עֳנִ֥י אֲבֹתֵ֖ינוּ בְּמִצְרָ֑יִם וְאֶת־זַעֲקָתָ֥ם שָׁמַ֖עְתָּ עַל־יַם־סֽוּף׃

10
Phonetic (Hebrew): va֠tּitּen 'oto֨t umoֽpeti֜ym bּepare'o֤h ubekal-'abadayv֙ ubekal-'a֣m 'aretz֔o kּi֣y yada֔'etּa kּi֥y hezi֖ydu 'aleyhe֑m vatּaֽ'ashs-leka֥ shshe֖m kּehayּ֥om hazּeֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"You sent signs and wonders against Pharaoh, against all his officials and all the people of his land, for you knew how arrogantly the Egyptians treated them. You made a name for yourself, which remains to this day.

וַ֠תִּתֵּן אֹתֹ֨ת וּמֹֽפְתִ֜ים בְּפַרְעֹ֤ה וּבְכָל־עֲבָדָיו֙ וּבְכָל־עַ֣ם אַרְצ֔וֹ כִּ֣י יָדַ֔עְתָּ כִּ֥י הֵזִ֖ידוּ עֲלֵיהֶ֑ם וַתַּֽעַשׂ־לְךָ֥ שֵׁ֖ם כְּהַיּ֥וֹם הַזֶּֽה׃

11
Phonetic (Hebrew): vehayּam֙ bּaqa֣'etּa lipeneyhe֔m vayּaֽ'aber֥u betoke-hayּa֖m bּayּabּashsha֑h veֽ'et-ro֨depeyhe֜m hishshela֧ketּa bimetzolo֛t kּemo-'e֖ben bּema֥yim 'azּiֽym׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"You divided the sea before them, so that they passed through it on dry ground, but you hurled their pursuers into the depths, like a stone into mighty waters.

וְהַיָּם֙ בָּקַ֣עְתָּ לִפְנֵיהֶ֔ם וַיַּֽעַבְר֥וּ בְתוֹךְ־הַיָּ֖ם בַּיַּבָּשָׁ֑ה וְֽאֶת־רֹ֨דְפֵיהֶ֜ם הִשְׁלַ֧כְתָּ בִמְצוֹלֹ֛ת כְּמוֹ־אֶ֖בֶן בְּמַ֥יִם עַזִּֽים׃

12
Phonetic (Hebrew): ube'amּ֣ud 'ana֔n hinechiyta֖m yoma֑m ube'amּ֥ud 'eshsh֙ la֔yelah leha'i֣yr lahe֔m 'et-hadּe֖reke 'ashshe֥r yeֽleku-baֽhּ׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"By day you led them with a pillar of cloud, and by night with a pillar of fire to give them light on the way they were to take.

וּבְעַמּ֣וּד עָנָ֔ן הִנְחִיתָ֖ם יוֹמָ֑ם וּבְעַמּ֥וּד אֵשׁ֙ לַ֔יְלָה לְהָאִ֣יר לָהֶ֔ם אֶת־הַדֶּ֖רֶךְ אֲשֶׁ֥ר יֵֽלְכוּ־בָֽהּ׃

13
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'a֤l har-siynay֙ yara֔detּa vedabּe֥r 'imּahe֖m mishshּama֑yim vatּitּe֨n lahe֜m mishshepּati֤ym yeshshariym֙ vetor֣ot 'eme֔t chuqּi֥ym umitzevo֖t tobiֽym׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"You came down on Mount Sinai; you spoke to them from heaven. You gave them regulations and laws that are just and right, and decrees and commands that are good.

וְעַ֤ל הַר־סִינַי֙ יָרַ֔דְתָּ וְדַבֵּ֥ר עִמָּהֶ֖ם מִשָּׁמָ֑יִם וַתִּתֵּ֨ן לָהֶ֜ם מִשְׁפָּטִ֤ים יְשָׁרִים֙ וְתוֹר֣וֹת אֱמֶ֔ת חֻקִּ֥ים וּמִצְוֺ֖ת טוֹבִֽים׃

14
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'et-shshabּa֥t qadeshsheka֖ hoda֣'ata lahe֑m umitzev֤ot vechuqּiym֙ vetora֔h tziui֣yta lahe֔m bּeya֖d moshshe֥h 'abedּeֽka׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"You made known to them your holy Sabbath and gave them commands, decrees and laws through your servant Moses.

וְאֶת־שַׁבַּ֥ת קָדְשְׁךָ֖ הוֹדַ֣עַתָ לָהֶ֑ם וּמִצְו֤וֹת וְחֻקִּים֙ וְתוֹרָ֔ה צִוִּ֣יתָ לָהֶ֔ם בְּיַ֖ד מֹשֶׁ֥ה עַבְדֶּֽךָ׃

15
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve֠lechem mishshּama֜yim nata֤tּah lahem֙ lire'aba֔m uma֗yim misּe֛la hotze֥'ta lahe֖m litzema'a֑m vatּo֣'mer lahe֗m labo'֙ lare֣shshet 'et-ha'a֔retz 'ashsher-nashsa֥'ta 'et-yadeka֖ late֥t laheֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"In their hunger you gave them bread from heaven and in their thirst you brought them water from the rock; you told them to go in and take possession of the land you had sworn with uplifted hand to give them.

וְ֠לֶחֶם מִשָּׁמַ֜יִם נָתַ֤תָּה לָהֶם֙ לִרְעָבָ֔ם וּמַ֗יִם מִסֶּ֛לַע הוֹצֵ֥אתָ לָהֶ֖ם לִצְמָאָ֑ם וַתֹּ֣אמֶר לָהֶ֗ם לָבוֹא֙ לָרֶ֣שֶׁת אֶת־הָאָ֔רֶץ אֲשֶׁר־נָשָׂ֥אתָ אֶת־יָדְךָ֖ לָתֵ֥ת לָהֶֽם׃

16
Phonetic (Hebrew): vehe֥m va'abote֖ynu hezi֑ydu vayּaqeshshu֙ 'et-'arepּa֔m velo֥ shshame'֖u 'el-mitzevoteֽyka׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"But they, our ancestors, became arrogant and stiff-necked, and they did not obey your commands.

וְהֵ֥ם וַאֲבֹתֵ֖ינוּ הֵזִ֑ידוּ וַיַּקְשׁוּ֙ אֶת־עָרְפָּ֔ם וְלֹ֥א שָׁמְע֖וּ אֶל־מִצְוֺתֶֽיךָ׃

17
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayema'an֣u lishshemo֗'a velo'-zaker֤u nipele'ote֨yka֙ 'ashshe֣r 'ashsi֣yta 'imּahe֔m vayּaqeshshu֙ 'et-'arepּa֔m vayּitּenu-ro֛'shsh lashsh֥ub le'abeduta֖m bּemireya֑m ve'atּah֩ 'el֨ohּa seliych֜ot chanּ֧un verach֛um 'eֽreke-'apּa֥yim verab-vchsd che֖sed velo֥ 'azabetּaֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"They refused to listen and failed to remember the miracles you performed among them. They became stiff-necked and in their rebellion appointed a leader in order to return to their slavery. But you are a forgiving God, gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love. Therefore you did not desert them,

וַיְמָאֲנ֣וּ לִשְׁמֹ֗עַ וְלֹא־זָכְר֤וּ נִפְלְאֹתֶ֨יךָ֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר עָשִׂ֣יתָ עִמָּהֶ֔ם וַיַּקְשׁוּ֙ אֶת־עָרְפָּ֔ם וַיִּתְּנוּ־רֹ֛אשׁ לָשׁ֥וּב לְעַבְדֻתָ֖ם בְּמִרְיָ֑ם וְאַתָּה֩ אֱל֨וֹהַּ סְלִיח֜וֹת חַנּ֧וּן וְרַח֛וּם אֶֽרֶךְ־אַפַּ֥יִם וְרַב־וחסד חֶ֖סֶד וְלֹ֥א עֲזַבְתָּֽם׃

18
Phonetic (Hebrew): a֗p kּiֽy-'ashs֤u lahem֙ 'e֣gel masּeka֔h vayּo֣'mer֔u ze֣h 'elohe֔yka 'ashshe֥r he'eleka֖ mimּitzera֑yim vֽayּa'ashs֔u ne'atz֖ot gּedolֽot׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"even when they cast for themselves an image of a calf and said, 'This is your god, who brought you up out of Egypt,' or when they committed awful blasphemies.

אַ֗ף כִּֽי־עָשׂ֤וּ לָהֶם֙ עֵ֣גֶל מַסֵּכָ֔ה וַיֹּ֣אמְר֔וּ זֶ֣ה אֱלֹהֶ֔יךָ אֲשֶׁ֥ר הֶעֶלְךָ֖ מִמִּצְרָ֑יִם וַֽיַּעֲשׂ֔וּ נֶאָצ֖וֹת גְּדֹלֽוֹת׃

19
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'atּah֙ bּerachame֣yka haֽrabּi֔ym lo֥ 'azabetּa֖m bּamּidebּa֑r 'et-'amּ֣ud he֠'anan lo'-sa֨r me'aleyhe֤m bּeyomam֙ lehanechota֣m bּehadּe֔reke ve'et-'amּ֨ud ha'e֤shsh bּela֨yelah֙ leha'i֣yr lahe֔m ve'et-hadּe֖reke 'ashshe֥r yeֽleku-baֽhּ׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"Because of your great compassion you did not abandon them in the wilderness. By day the pillar of cloud did not fail to guide them on their path, nor the pillar of fire by night to shine on the way they were to take.

וְאַתָּה֙ בְּרַחֲמֶ֣יךָ הָֽרַבִּ֔ים לֹ֥א עֲזַבְתָּ֖ם בַּמִּדְבָּ֑ר אֶת־עַמּ֣וּד הֶ֠עָנָן לֹא־סָ֨ר מֵעֲלֵיהֶ֤ם בְּיוֹמָם֙ לְהַנְחֹתָ֣ם בְּהַדֶּ֔רֶךְ וְאֶת־עַמּ֨וּד הָאֵ֤שׁ בְּלַ֨יְלָה֙ לְהָאִ֣יר לָהֶ֔ם וְאֶת־הַדֶּ֖רֶךְ אֲשֶׁ֥ר יֵֽלְכוּ־בָֽהּ׃

20
Phonetic (Hebrew): veruchaka֨ hatּoba֔h nata֖tּa lehashsekּiyla֑m umaneka֙ lo'-mana֣'etּa mipּiyhe֔m uma֛yim nata֥tּah lahe֖m litzema'aֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"You gave your good Spirit to instruct them. You did not withhold your manna from their mouths, and you gave them water for their thirst.

וְרוּחֲךָ֨ הַטּוֹבָ֔ה נָתַ֖תָּ לְהַשְׂכִּילָ֑ם וּמַנְךָ֙ לֹא־מָנַ֣עְתָּ מִפִּיהֶ֔ם וּמַ֛יִם נָתַ֥תָּה לָהֶ֖ם לִצְמָאָֽם׃

21
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'arebּa'i֥ym shshana֛h kּilekּaletּa֥m bּamּidebּa֖r lo֣ chase֑ru shsalemoֽteyhem֙ lo֣ bal֔u verageleyhe֖m lo֥ batzeֽqu׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"For forty years you sustained them in the wilderness; they lacked nothing, their clothes did not wear out nor did their feet become swollen.

וְאַרְבָּעִ֥ים שָׁנָ֛ה כִּלְכַּלְתָּ֥ם בַּמִּדְבָּ֖ר לֹ֣א חָסֵ֑רוּ שַׂלְמֹֽתֵיהֶם֙ לֹ֣א בָל֔וּ וְרַגְלֵיהֶ֖ם לֹ֥א בָצֵֽקוּ׃

22
Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּitּe֨n lahe֤m mamelakot֙ va'amami֔ym vaֽtּacheleqe֖m lepe'a֑h vayּiֽyreshsh֞u 'et-'e֣retz siych֗on ve'et-'e֨retz֙ me֣leke cheshshebּ֔on ve'et-'e֖retz '֥og meֽleke-habּashshaֽn׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"You gave them kingdoms and nations, allotting to them even the remote frontiers. They took over the country of Sihon king of Heshbon and the country of Og king of Bashan.

וַתִּתֵּ֨ן לָהֶ֤ם מַמְלָכוֹת֙ וַעֲמָמִ֔ים וַֽתַּחְלְקֵ֖ם לְפֵאָ֑ה וַיִּֽירְשׁ֞וּ אֶת־אֶ֣רֶץ סִיח֗וֹן וְאֶת־אֶ֨רֶץ֙ מֶ֣לֶךְ חֶשְׁבּ֔וֹן וְאֶת־אֶ֖רֶץ ע֥וֹג מֶֽלֶךְ־הַבָּשָֽׁן׃

23
Phonetic (Hebrew): ubeneyhe֣m hirebּi֔yta kּekokebe֖y hashshּama֑yim vatּebiy'em֙ 'el-ha'a֔retz 'ashsher-'ama֥retּa la'aboteyhe֖m lab֥o laraֽshshet׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"You made their descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky, and you brought them into the land that you told their ancestors to enter and possess.

וּבְנֵיהֶ֣ם הִרְבִּ֔יתָ כְּכֹכְבֵ֖י הַשָּׁמָ֑יִם וַתְּבִיאֵם֙ אֶל־הָאָ֔רֶץ אֲשֶׁר־אָמַ֥רְתָּ לַאֲבֹתֵיהֶ֖ם לָב֥וֹא לָרָֽשֶׁת׃

24

Edified Edition (EDE)"Their descendants went in and took possession of the land. You subdued before them the Canaanites, who lived in the land; you handed the Canaanites over to them, along with their kings and the peoples of the land, to deal with them as they pleased.

וַיָּבֹ֤אוּ הַבָּנִים֙ וַיִּֽירְשׁ֣וּ אֶת־הָאָ֔רֶץ וַתַּכְנַ֨ע לִפְנֵיהֶ֜ם אֶת־יֹשְׁבֵ֤י הָאָ֨רֶץ֙ הַכְּנַ֣עֲנִ֔ים וַֽתִּתְּנֵ֖ם בְּיָדָ֑ם וְאֶת־מַלְכֵיהֶם֙ וְאֶת־עַֽמְמֵ֣י הָאָ֔רֶץ לַעֲשׂ֥וֹת בָּהֶ֖ם כִּרְצוֹנָֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vaֽyּilekּed֞u 'ari֣ym bּetzurot֮ va'adama֣h shshemenah֒ vayּiֽyreshsh֡u bּatּi֣ym meleֽ'iym-kּal-t֠ub bּor֨ot chatzubi֜ym kּerami֧ym vezeyti֛ym ve'e֥tz ma'aka֖l laro֑b vayּo'kel֤u vaֽyּishsebּe'u֙ vayּashshemi֔ynu vayּiֽte'adּen֖u bּetubeka֥ hagּadֽol׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"They captured fortified cities and fertile land; they took possession of houses filled with all kinds of good things, wells already dug, vineyards, olive groves and fruit trees in abundance. They ate to the full and were well-nourished; they revelled in your great goodness.

וַֽיִּלְכְּד֞וּ עָרִ֣ים בְּצֻרוֹת֮ וַאֲדָמָ֣ה שְׁמֵנָה֒ וַיִּֽירְשׁ֡וּ בָּתִּ֣ים מְלֵֽאִים־כָּל־ט֠וּב בֹּר֨וֹת חֲצוּבִ֜ים כְּרָמִ֧ים וְזֵיתִ֛ים וְעֵ֥ץ מַאֲכָ֖ל לָרֹ֑ב וַיֹּאכְל֤וּ וַֽיִּשְׂבְּעוּ֙ וַיַּשְׁמִ֔ינוּ וַיִּֽתְעַדְּנ֖וּ בְּטוּבְךָ֥ הַגָּדֽוֹל׃

26
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּamer֨u vaֽyּimered֜u bּa֗ke vayּashsheli֤ku 'et-tּoraֽteka֙ 'achare֣y gaua֔m ve'et-nebiy'e֣yka hara֔gu 'ashsher-he'i֥ydu ba֖m lahashshiyba֣m 'ele֑yka vֽayּa'ashs֔u ne'atz֖ot gּedoloֽt׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"But they were disobedient and rebelled against you; they turned their backs on your law. They killed your prophets, who had warned them in order to turn them back to you; they committed awful blasphemies.

וַיַּמְר֨וּ וַֽיִּמְרְד֜וּ בָּ֗ךְ וַיַּשְׁלִ֤כוּ אֶת־תּוֹרָֽתְךָ֙ אַחֲרֵ֣י גַוָּ֔ם וְאֶת־נְבִיאֶ֣יךָ הָרָ֔גוּ אֲשֶׁר־הֵעִ֥ידוּ בָ֖ם לַהֲשִׁיבָ֣ם אֵלֶ֑יךָ וַֽיַּעֲשׂ֔וּ נֶאָצ֖וֹת גְּדוֹלֹֽת׃

27
Phonetic (Hebrew): vaֽtּitּenem֙ bּeya֣d tzaֽreyhe֔m vayּatze֖ru lahe֑m ube'e֤t tzaֽratam֙ yitze'aq֣u 'ele֔yka ve'atּah֙ mishshּama֣yim tּishshema֔ uֽkerachame֣yka haֽrabּi֗ym tּitּe֤n lahem֙ mֽoshshiy'i֔ym veyoshshiy'֖um miyּa֥d tzareyheֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"So you delivered them into the hands of their enemies, who oppressed them. But when they were oppressed they cried out to you. From heaven you heard them, and in your great compassion you gave them deliverers, who rescued them from the hand of their enemies.

וַֽתִּתְּנֵם֙ בְּיַ֣ד צָֽרֵיהֶ֔ם וַיָּצֵ֖רוּ לָהֶ֑ם וּבְעֵ֤ת צָֽרָתָם֙ יִצְעֲק֣וּ אֵלֶ֔יךָ וְאַתָּה֙ מִשָּׁמַ֣יִם תִּשְׁמָ֔ע וּֽכְרַחֲמֶ֣יךָ הָֽרַבִּ֗ים תִּתֵּ֤ן לָהֶם֙ מֽוֹשִׁיעִ֔ים וְיוֹשִׁיע֖וּם מִיַּ֥ד צָרֵיהֶֽם׃

28
Phonetic (Hebrew): uken֣ocha lahe֔m yashsh֕ubu la'ashs֥ot ra֖ lepane֑yka vatּaֽ'azebe֞m bּeya֤d 'oֽyebeyhem֙ vayּiredּ֣u bahe֔m vayּashsh֨ubu֙ vayּize'aq֔uka ve'atּa֞h mishshּama֧yim tּishshema֛ vetatzּiyle֥m kּeֽrachame֖yka rabּ֥ot 'itּiֽym׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"But as soon as they were at rest, they again did what was evil in your sight. Then you abandoned them to the hand of their enemies so that they ruled over them. And when they cried out to you again, you heard from heaven, and in your compassion you delivered them time after time.

וּכְנ֣וֹחַ לָהֶ֔ם יָשׁ֕וּבוּ לַעֲשׂ֥וֹת רַ֖ע לְפָנֶ֑יךָ וַתַּֽעַזְבֵ֞ם בְּיַ֤ד אֹֽיְבֵיהֶם֙ וַיִּרְדּ֣וּ בָהֶ֔ם וַיָּשׁ֨וּבוּ֙ וַיִּזְעָק֔וּךָ וְאַתָּ֞ה מִשָּׁמַ֧יִם תִּשְׁמַ֛ע וְתַצִּילֵ֥ם כְּֽרַחֲמֶ֖יךָ רַבּ֥וֹת עִתִּֽים׃

29
Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּa֨'ad bּahe֜m lahashshiyba֣m 'el-tּorate֗ka vehe֨mּah hezi֜ydu velo'-shshame'֤u lemitzevote֨yka֙ ubemishshepּate֣yka chaֽte'u-ba֔m 'ashsher-ya'ashse֥h 'ada֖m vechaya֣h bahe֑m vayּitּen֤u katep֙ sore֔ret ve'arepּa֥m hiqeshsh֖u velo֥ shshameֽ'u׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"You warned them in order to turn them back to your law, but they became arrogant and disobeyed your commands. They sinned against your ordinances, of which you said, 'The person who obeys them will live by them.' Stubbornly they turned their backs on you, became stiff-necked and refused to listen.

וַתָּ֨עַד בָּהֶ֜ם לַהֲשִׁיבָ֣ם אֶל־תּוֹרָתֶ֗ךָ וְהֵ֨מָּה הֵזִ֜ידוּ וְלֹא־שָׁמְע֤וּ לְמִצְוֺתֶ֨יךָ֙ וּבְמִשְׁפָּטֶ֣יךָ חָֽטְאוּ־בָ֔ם אֲשֶׁר־יַעֲשֶׂ֥ה אָדָ֖ם וְחָיָ֣ה בָהֶ֑ם וַיִּתְּנ֤וּ כָתֵף֙ סוֹרֶ֔רֶת וְעָרְפָּ֥ם הִקְשׁ֖וּ וְלֹ֥א שָׁמֵֽעוּ׃

30
Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּimeshsho֤ke 'aleyhem֙ shshani֣ym rabּ֔ot vatּa֨'ad bּa֧m bּeruchaka֛ bּeyad-nebiy'e֖yka velo֣ he'ezi֑ynu vaֽtּitּene֔m bּeya֖d 'amּe֥y ha'aratzoֽt׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"For many years you were patient with them. By your Spirit you warned them through your prophets. Yet they paid no attention, so you gave them into the hands of the neighbouring peoples.

וַתִּמְשֹׁ֤ךְ עֲלֵיהֶם֙ שָׁנִ֣ים רַבּ֔וֹת וַתָּ֨עַד בָּ֧ם בְּרוּחֲךָ֛ בְּיַד־נְבִיאֶ֖יךָ וְלֹ֣א הֶאֱזִ֑ינוּ וַֽתִּתְּנֵ֔ם בְּיַ֖ד עַמֵּ֥י הָאֲרָצֹֽת׃

31
Phonetic (Hebrew): uֽberachame֧yka harabּi֛ym loֽ'-'ashsiyta֥m kּala֖h velo֣ 'azabetּa֑m kּi֛y 'eֽl-chanּ֥un verach֖um 'aֽtּah׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"But in your great mercy you did not put an end to them or abandon them, for you are a gracious and merciful God.

וּֽבְרַחֲמֶ֧יךָ הָרַבִּ֛ים לֹֽא־עֲשִׂיתָ֥ם כָּלָ֖ה וְלֹ֣א עֲזַבְתָּ֑ם כִּ֛י אֵֽל־חַנּ֥וּן וְרַח֖וּם אָֽתָּה׃

32
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'atּa֣h 'e֠loheynu ha'e֨l hagּad֜ol hagּibּ֣or vehanּora'֮ shshome֣r habּeri֣yt vehachesed֒ 'al-yime'a֣t lepane֡yka 'e֣t kּal-hatּela'a֣h 'ֽashsher-me֠tza'atenu limelake֨ynu leshsare֧ynu ulekohane֛ynu velinebiy'e֥nu vela'abote֖ynu ulekal-'amּe֑ka miymey֙ maleke֣y 'ashshּ֔ur 'a֖d hayּ֥om hazּeֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"Now therefore, our God, the great God, mighty and awesome, who keeps his covenant of love, do not let all this hardship seem trifling in your eyes, the hardship that has come on us, on our kings and leaders, on our priests and prophets, on our ancestors and all your people, from the days of the kings of Assyria until today.

וְעַתָּ֣ה אֱ֠לֹהֵינוּ הָאֵ֨ל הַגָּד֜וֹל הַגִּבּ֣וֹר וְהַנּוֹרָא֮ שׁוֹמֵ֣ר הַבְּרִ֣ית וְהַחֶסֶד֒ אַל־יִמְעַ֣ט לְפָנֶ֡יךָ אֵ֣ת כָּל־הַתְּלָאָ֣ה אֲֽשֶׁר־מְ֠צָאַתְנוּ לִמְלָכֵ֨ינוּ לְשָׂרֵ֧ינוּ וּלְכֹהֲנֵ֛ינוּ וְלִנְבִיאֵ֥נוּ וְלַאֲבֹתֵ֖ינוּ וּלְכָל־עַמֶּ֑ךָ מִימֵי֙ מַלְכֵ֣י אַשּׁ֔וּר עַ֖ד הַיּ֥וֹם הַזֶּֽה׃

33
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'atּa֣h tzadּi֔yq 'a֖l kּal-habּa֣ 'ale֑ynu kּiֽy-'eme֥t 'ashsi֖yta va'ana֥chenu hireshshaֽ'enu׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"In all that has happened to us, you have been righteous; you have acted faithfully, while we did wrong.

וְאַתָּ֣ה צַדִּ֔יק עַ֖ל כָּל־הַבָּ֣א עָלֵ֑ינוּ כִּֽי־אֱמֶ֥ת עָשִׂ֖יתָ וַאֲנַ֥חְנוּ הִרְשָֽׁעְנוּ׃

34
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'et-melake֤ynu shsare֨ynu֙ kּohane֣ynu va'abote֔ynu lo֥ 'ashs֖u tּorate֑ka velo֤ hiqeshshi֨ybu֙ 'el-mitzevote֔yka ule'e֣devote֔yka 'ashshe֥r ha'iydo֖ta bּaheֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"Our kings, our leaders, our priests and our ancestors did not follow your law; they did not pay attention to your commands or the warnings you gave them.

וְאֶת־מְלָכֵ֤ינוּ שָׂרֵ֨ינוּ֙ כֹּהֲנֵ֣ינוּ וַאֲבֹתֵ֔ינוּ לֹ֥א עָשׂ֖וּ תּוֹרָתֶ֑ךָ וְלֹ֤א הִקְשִׁ֨יבוּ֙ אֶל־מִצְוֺתֶ֔יךָ וּלְעֵ֣דְוֺתֶ֔יךָ אֲשֶׁ֥ר הַעִידֹ֖תָ בָּהֶֽם׃

35
Phonetic (Hebrew): vehe֣m bּemalekutam֩ ubetubeka֨ hara֜b 'ashsher-nata֣tּa lahe֗m ube'e֨retz harechaba֧h vehashshּemena֛h 'ashsher-nata֥tּa lipeneyhe֖m lo֣ 'abad֑uka veֽlo'-shsha֔bu mimּaֽ'aleleyhe֖m hara'iֽym׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"Even while they were in their kingdom, enjoying your great goodness to them in the spacious and fertile land you gave them, they did not serve you or turn from their evil ways.

וְהֵ֣ם בְּמַלְכוּתָם֩ וּבְטוּבְךָ֨ הָרָ֜ב אֲשֶׁר־נָתַ֣תָּ לָהֶ֗ם וּבְאֶ֨רֶץ הָרְחָבָ֧ה וְהַשְּׁמֵנָ֛ה אֲשֶׁר־נָתַ֥תָּ לִפְנֵיהֶ֖ם לֹ֣א עֲבָד֑וּךָ וְֽלֹא־שָׁ֔בוּ מִמַּֽעַלְלֵיהֶ֖ם הָרָעִֽים׃

36
Phonetic (Hebrew): hinּe֛h 'ana֥chenu hayּ֖om 'abadi֑ym veha'a֜retz 'ashsher-nata֣tּah la'abote֗ynu le'eko֤l 'et-pּireyahּ֙ ve'et-tuba֔hּ hinּe֛h 'ana֥chenu 'abadi֖ym 'aleֽyha׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"But see, we are slaves today, slaves in the land you gave our ancestors so they could eat its fruit and the other good things it produces.

הִנֵּ֛ה אֲנַ֥חְנוּ הַיּ֖וֹם עֲבָדִ֑ים וְהָאָ֜רֶץ אֲשֶׁר־נָתַ֣תָּה לַאֲבֹתֵ֗ינוּ לֶאֱכֹ֤ל אֶת־פִּרְיָהּ֙ וְאֶת־טוּבָ֔הּ הִנֵּ֛ה אֲנַ֥חְנוּ עֲבָדִ֖ים עָלֶֽיהָ׃

37
Phonetic (Hebrew): utebu'ata֣hּ marebּa֗h lamּelaki֛ym 'ashsher-nata֥tּah 'ale֖ynu bּechatּo'vte֑ynu ve'a֣l gּe֠viyּoteynu moshsheli֤ym ubibehemetּe֨nu֙ kּiretzona֔m ubetzara֥h gedola֖h 'anaֽchenu׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)"Because of our sins, its abundant harvest goes to the kings you have placed over us. They rule over our bodies and our livestock as they please. We are in great distress.

וּתְבוּאָתָ֣הּ מַרְבָּ֗ה לַמְּלָכִ֛ים אֲשֶׁר־נָתַ֥תָּה עָלֵ֖ינוּ בְּחַטֹּאותֵ֑ינוּ וְעַ֣ל גְּ֠וִיֹּתֵינוּ מֹשְׁלִ֤ים וּבִבְהֶמְתֵּ֨נוּ֙ כִּרְצוֹנָ֔ם וּבְצָרָ֥ה גְדוֹלָ֖ה אֲנָֽחְנוּ׃פ
