Chapter 12

Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּedabּe֨r mireya֤m ve'aharon֙ bּemoshshe֔h 'al-'od֛ot ha'ishshּa֥h hakּushshi֖yt 'ashshe֣r laqa֑ch kּiֽy-'ishshּa֥h kushshi֖yt laqaֽch׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Miriam and Aaron began to speak against Moses because of the Cushite woman he had married.

וַתְּדַבֵּ֨ר מִרְיָ֤ם וְאַהֲרֹן֙ בְּמֹשֶׁ֔ה עַל־אֹד֛וֹת הָאִשָּׁ֥ה הַכֻּשִׁ֖ית אֲשֶׁ֣ר לָקָ֑ח כִּֽי־אִשָּׁ֥ה כֻשִׁ֖ית לָקָֽח׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo'mer֗u hara֤q 'ake-bּemoshsheh֙ dּibּe֣r yehva֔h halo֖ gּam-bּa֣nu dibּe֑r vayּishshema֖ yehvaֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)They said, "Has the LORD spoken only through Moses? Hasn't he also spoken through us?" And the LORD heard them.

וַיֹּאמְר֗וּ הֲרַ֤ק אַךְ־בְּמֹשֶׁה֙ דִּבֶּ֣ר יְהוָ֔ה הֲלֹ֖א גַּם־בָּ֣נוּ דִבֵּ֑ר וַיִּשְׁמַ֖ע יְהוָֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): veha'i֥yshsh moshshe֖h 'nv 'ana֣yv me'o֑d mikּol֙ haֽ'ada֔m 'ashshe֖r 'al-pּene֥y ha'adamaֽh׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)(Now Moses was a very humble man, more humble than anyone else on the face of the earth.)

וְהָאִ֥ישׁ מֹשֶׁ֖ה ענו עָנָ֣יו מְאֹ֑ד מִכֹּל֙ הָֽאָדָ֔ם אֲשֶׁ֖ר עַל־פְּנֵ֥י הָאֲדָמָֽה׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֨'mer yehva֜h pּite'o֗m 'el-moshshe֤h ve'eֽl-'aharon֙ ve'el-mireya֔m tze'֥u shshelashshetּeke֖m 'el-'o֣hel mo'e֑d vayּetze'֖u shshelashshetּaֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Suddenly the LORD said to Moses, Aaron, and Miriam, "Come out to the Tent of Meeting, all three of you." So the three of them went out.

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר יְהוָ֜ה פִּתְאֹ֗ם אֶל־מֹשֶׁ֤ה וְאֶֽל־אַהֲרֹן֙ וְאֶל־מִרְיָ֔ם צְא֥וּ שְׁלָשְׁתְּכֶ֖ם אֶל־אֹ֣הֶל מוֹעֵ֑ד וַיֵּצְא֖וּ שְׁלָשְׁתָּֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּe֤red yehvah֙ bּe'amּ֣ud 'ana֔n vaֽyּa'amo֖d pּe֣tach ha'o֑hel vayּiqera'֙ 'aharo֣n umireya֔m vayּetze'֖u shsheneyheֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Then the LORD came down in a pillar of cloud and stood at the entrance to the Tent. He called Aaron and Miriam, and both of them stepped forward.

וַיֵּ֤רֶד יְהוָה֙ בְּעַמּ֣וּד עָנָ֔ן וַֽיַּעֲמֹ֖ד פֶּ֣תַח הָאֹ֑הֶל וַיִּקְרָא֙ אַהֲרֹ֣ן וּמִרְיָ֔ם וַיֵּצְא֖וּ שְׁנֵיהֶֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֖'mer shshime'u-na֣ debara֑y 'im-yiֽheyeh֙ nebi֣y'ake֔m yehva֗h bּamּare'ah֙ 'ela֣yv 'etevadּa֔ bּachal֖om 'adabּer-bּֽo׃

Edified Edition (EDE)He said, "Listen to my words: 'When there is a prophet among you, I, the LORD, reveal myself to them in visions; I speak to them in dreams.

וַיֹּ֖אמֶר שִׁמְעוּ־נָ֣א דְבָרָ֑י אִם־יִֽהְיֶה֙ נְבִ֣יאֲכֶ֔ם יְהוָ֗ה בַּמַּרְאָה֙ אֵלָ֣יו אֶתְוַדָּ֔ע בַּחֲל֖וֹם אֲדַבֶּר־בּֽוֹ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): lo'-ke֖n 'abedּi֣y moshshe֑h bּekal-bּeyti֖y ne'ema֥n hֽu'׃

Edified Edition (EDE)But this is not true of my servant Moses; he is faithful in all my house.

לֹא־כֵ֖ן עַבְדִּ֣י מֹשֶׁ֑ה בְּכָל־בֵּיתִ֖י נֶאֱמָ֥ן הֽוּא׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): pּe֣h 'el-pּe֞h 'adabּer-bּ֗o umare'eh֙ velo֣ bechiydo֔t utemuna֥t yehva֖h yabּi֑yt umadּ֨u'a֙ lo֣ yere'te֔m ledabּe֖r bּe'abedּi֥y bemoshsheֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)With him I speak face to face, clearly and not in riddles; he sees the form of the LORD. Why then were you not afraid to speak against my servant Moses?' "

פֶּ֣ה אֶל־פֶּ֞ה אֲדַבֶּר־בּ֗וֹ וּמַרְאֶה֙ וְלֹ֣א בְחִידֹ֔ת וּתְמֻנַ֥ת יְהוָ֖ה יַבִּ֑יט וּמַדּ֨וּעַ֙ לֹ֣א יְרֵאתֶ֔ם לְדַבֵּ֖ר בְּעַבְדִּ֥י בְמֹשֶֽׁה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiֽchar 'a֧p yehva֛h bּa֖m vayּelaֽke׃

Edified Edition (EDE)The anger of the LORD burned against them, and he left them.

וַיִּֽחַר אַ֧ף יְהוָ֛ה בָּ֖ם וַיֵּלַֽךְ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vehe'ana֗n sa֚r me'a֣l ha'o֔hel vehinּe֥h mireya֖m metzora֣'at kּashshּa֑leg vayּi֧pen 'aharo֛n 'el-mireya֖m vehinּe֥h metzoraֽ'at׃

Edified Edition (EDE)When the cloud lifted from above the Tent, Miriam’s skin was suddenly white as snow with a contagious disease. Aaron turned toward her and saw that she had the disease.

וְהֶעָנָ֗ן סָ֚ר מֵעַ֣ל הָאֹ֔הֶל וְהִנֵּ֥ה מִרְיָ֖ם מְצֹרַ֣עַת כַּשָּׁ֑לֶג וַיִּ֧פֶן אַהֲרֹ֛ן אֶל־מִרְיָ֖ם וְהִנֵּ֥ה מְצֹרָֽעַת׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֥'mer 'aharo֖n 'el-moshshe֑h bּi֣y 'adoni֔y 'al-na֨ tashshe֤t 'ale֨ynu֙ chatּa֔'t 'ashshe֥r no'a֖lenu va'ashshe֥r chataֽ'nu׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Aaron said to Moses, "Please, my lord, do not hold against us the sin we have so foolishly committed.

וַיֹּ֥אמֶר אַהֲרֹ֖ן אֶל־מֹשֶׁ֑ה בִּ֣י אֲדֹנִ֔י אַל־נָ֨א תָשֵׁ֤ת עָלֵ֨ינוּ֙ חַטָּ֔את אֲשֶׁ֥ר נוֹאַ֖לְנוּ וַאֲשֶׁ֥ר חָטָֽאנוּ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): al-na֥ tehi֖y kּamּe֑t 'ashshe֤r bּetze'to֙ mere֣chem 'imּ֔o vayּe'ake֖l chatzi֥y beshsarֽo׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Do not let her be like a stillborn infant whose flesh is half eaten away when it comes from its mother’s womb."

אַל־נָ֥א תְהִ֖י כַּמֵּ֑ת אֲשֶׁ֤ר בְּצֵאתוֹ֙ מֵרֶ֣חֶם אִמּ֔וֹ וַיֵּאָכֵ֖ל חֲצִ֥י בְשָׂרֽוֹ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּitze'a֣q moshshe֔h 'el-yehva֖h le'mo֑r 'e֕l na֛ repa֥ na֖ laֽhּ׃p

Edified Edition (EDE)So Moses cried out to the LORD, "Please, God, heal her!"

וַיִּצְעַ֣ק מֹשֶׁ֔ה אֶל־יְהוָ֖ה לֵאמֹ֑ר אֵ֕ל נָ֛א רְפָ֥א נָ֖א לָֽהּ׃פ

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֨'mer yehva֜h 'el-moshshe֗h ve'abi֨yha֙ yaro֤q yaraq֙ bּepane֔yha halo֥ tikּale֖m shshibe'a֣t yami֑ym tּisּage֞r shshibe'a֤t yamiym֙ mich֣utz laֽmּachane֔h ve'acha֖r tּe'aseֽp׃

Edified Edition (EDE)The LORD replied to Moses, "If her father had spit in her face, would she not have been in disgrace for seven days? Confine her outside the camp for seven days; after that, she can be brought back."

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר יְהוָ֜ה אֶל־מֹשֶׁ֗ה וְאָבִ֨יהָ֙ יָרֹ֤ק יָרַק֙ בְּפָנֶ֔יהָ הֲלֹ֥א תִכָּלֵ֖ם שִׁבְעַ֣ת יָמִ֑ים תִּסָּגֵ֞ר שִׁבְעַ֤ת יָמִים֙ מִח֣וּץ לַֽמַּחֲנֶ֔ה וְאַחַ֖ר תֵּאָסֵֽף׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּisּage֥r mireya֛m mich֥utz laֽmּachane֖h shshibe'a֣t yami֑ym veha'am֙ lo֣ nasa֔ 'ad-he'ase֖p mireyaֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)So Miriam was confined outside the camp for seven days, and the people did not move on until she was brought back.

וַתִּסָּגֵ֥ר מִרְיָ֛ם מִח֥וּץ לַֽמַּחֲנֶ֖ה שִׁבְעַ֣ת יָמִ֑ים וְהָעָם֙ לֹ֣א נָסַ֔ע עַד־הֵאָסֵ֖ף מִרְיָֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'acha֛r nase'֥u ha'a֖m mechatzer֑ot vaֽyּachan֖u bּemidebּa֥r pּa'raֽn׃p

Edified Edition (EDE)After that, the people left Hazeroth and encamped in the wilderness of Paran.

וְאַחַ֛ר נָסְע֥וּ הָעָ֖ם מֵחֲצֵר֑וֹת וַֽיַּחֲנ֖וּ בְּמִדְבַּ֥ר פָּארָֽן׃פ
