Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּishsּa'֙ kּal-ha֣'eda֔h vaֽyּitּen֖u 'et-qola֑m vayּibekּ֥u ha'a֖m bּalּa֥yelah hahֽu'׃
Edified Edition (EDE)That night all the members of the community raised their voices and wept aloud.

וַתִּשָּׂא֙ כָּל־הָ֣עֵדָ֔ה וַֽיִּתְּנ֖וּ אֶת־קוֹלָ֑ם וַיִּבְכּ֥וּ הָעָ֖ם בַּלַּ֥יְלָה הַהֽוּא׃

2
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּilּo֨nu֙ 'al-moshshe֣h ve'aֽl-'aharo֔n kּo֖l bּene֣y yishsera'e֑l vaֽyּo'mer֨u 'alehe֜m kּal-ha'eda֗h lu-ma֨tenu֙ bּe'e֣retz mitzera֔yim '֛o bּamּidebּa֥r hazּe֖h lu-maֽtenu׃
Edified Edition (EDE)All the Israelites grumbled against Moses and Aaron, and the whole assembly said to them, "If only we had died in Egypt! Or in this wilderness!

וַיִּלֹּ֨נוּ֙ עַל־מֹשֶׁ֣ה וְעַֽל־אַהֲרֹ֔ן כֹּ֖ל בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וַֽיֹּאמְר֨וּ אֲלֵהֶ֜ם כָּל־הָעֵדָ֗ה לוּ־מַ֨תְנוּ֙ בְּאֶ֣רֶץ מִצְרַ֔יִם א֛וֹ בַּמִּדְבָּ֥ר הַזֶּ֖ה לוּ־מָֽתְנוּ׃

3
Phonetic (Hebrew): velama֣h ye֠hvah mebi֨y 'ota֜nu 'el-ha'a֤retz hazּo't֙ linepּo֣l bּache֔reb nashshe֥ynu vetapּe֖nu yihey֣u laba֑z hal֧o t֦ob la֖nu shsh֥ub mitzeraֽyemah׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Why is the LORD bringing us to this land only to let us fall by the sword? Our wives and children will be taken as plunder. Wouldn't it be better for us to go back to Egypt?"

וְלָמָ֣ה יְ֠הוָה מֵבִ֨יא אֹתָ֜נוּ אֶל־הָאָ֤רֶץ הַזֹּאת֙ לִנְפֹּ֣ל בַּחֶ֔רֶב נָשֵׁ֥ינוּ וְטַפֵּ֖נוּ יִהְי֣וּ לָבַ֑ז הֲל֧וֹא ט֦וֹב לָ֖נוּ שׁ֥וּב מִצְרָֽיְמָה׃

4
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo'mer֖u 'i֣yshsh 'el-'achi֑yv nitּena֥h ro֖'shsh venashsh֥ubah mitzeraֽyemah׃
Edified Edition (EDE)And they said to each other, "We should choose a leader and go back to Egypt."

וַיֹּאמְר֖וּ אִ֣ישׁ אֶל־אָחִ֑יו נִתְּנָ֥ה רֹ֖אשׁ וְנָשׁ֥וּבָה מִצְרָֽיְמָה׃

5
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּipּo֥l moshshe֛h ve'aharo֖n 'al-pּeneyhe֑m lipene֕y kּal-qeha֥l 'ada֖t bּene֥y yishsera'eֽl׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then Moses and Aaron fell facedown in front of the whole Israelite assembly gathered there.

וַיִּפֹּ֥ל מֹשֶׁ֛ה וְאַהֲרֹ֖ן עַל־פְּנֵיהֶ֑ם לִפְנֵ֕י כָּל־קְהַ֥ל עֲדַ֖ת בְּנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

6
Phonetic (Hebrew): viyhoshshu֣'a bּin-n֗un vekaleb֙ bּen-yepunּe֔h min-hatּari֖ym 'et-ha'a֑retz qare'֖u bּigedeyheֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh, who were among those who had explored the land, tore their clothes

וִיהוֹשֻׁ֣עַ בִּן־נ֗וּן וְכָלֵב֙ בֶּן־יְפֻנֶּ֔ה מִן־הַתָּרִ֖ים אֶת־הָאָ֑רֶץ קָרְע֖וּ בִּגְדֵיהֶֽם׃

7
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֣'mer֔u 'el-kּal-'ada֥t bּeneֽy-yishsera'e֖l le'mo֑r ha'a֗retz 'ashshe֨r 'aba֤renu bahּ֙ lat֣ur 'ota֔hּ toba֥h ha'a֖retz me'o֥d me'oֽd׃
Edified Edition (EDE)and said to the entire Israelite assembly, "The land we passed through and explored is exceedingly good.

וַיֹּ֣אמְר֔וּ אֶל־כָּל־עֲדַ֥ת בְּנֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל לֵאמֹ֑ר הָאָ֗רֶץ אֲשֶׁ֨ר עָבַ֤רְנוּ בָהּ֙ לָת֣וּר אֹתָ֔הּ טוֹבָ֥ה הָאָ֖רֶץ מְאֹ֥ד מְאֹֽד׃

8
Phonetic (Hebrew): im-chape֥tz bּa֨nu֙ yehva֔h vehebi֤y 'ota֨nu֙ 'el-ha'a֣retz hazּo֔'t unetana֖hּ la֑nu 'e֕retz 'ashsher-hi֛v zaba֥t chala֖b udebaֽshsh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)If the LORD is pleased with us, he will lead us into that land, a land flowing with milk and honey, and will give it to us.

אִם־חָפֵ֥ץ בָּ֨נוּ֙ יְהוָ֔ה וְהֵבִ֤יא אֹתָ֨נוּ֙ אֶל־הָאָ֣רֶץ הַזֹּ֔את וּנְתָנָ֖הּ לָ֑נוּ אֶ֕רֶץ אֲשֶׁר־הִ֛וא זָבַ֥ת חָלָ֖ב וּדְבָֽשׁ׃

9
Phonetic (Hebrew): a֣ke bּaֽyhvah֮ 'al-tּimerodu֒ ve'atּe֗m 'al-tּiֽyre'u֙ 'et-'a֣m ha'a֔retz kּi֥y lacheme֖nu he֑m sa֣r tzilּa֧m me'aleyhe֛m vaֽyhva֥h 'itּa֖nu 'al-tּiyra'uֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Only do not rebel against the LORD. And do not be afraid of the people of the land, because we will devour them. Their protection is gone, but the LORD is with us. Do not be afraid of them."

אַ֣ךְ בַּֽיהוָה֮ אַל־תִּמְרֹדוּ֒ וְאַתֶּ֗ם אַל־תִּֽירְאוּ֙ אֶת־עַ֣ם הָאָ֔רֶץ כִּ֥י לַחְמֵ֖נוּ הֵ֑ם סָ֣ר צִלָּ֧ם מֵעֲלֵיהֶ֛ם וַֽיהוָ֥ה אִתָּ֖נוּ אַל־תִּירָאֻֽם׃

10
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּoֽ'meru֙ kּal-ha֣'eda֔h liregּ֥om 'ota֖m bּa'abani֑ym ukeb֣od yehva֗h nire'ah֙ bּe'o֣hel mo'e֔d 'eֽl-kּal-bּene֖y yishsera'eֽl׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)But the whole assembly talked about stoning them. Then the glory of the LORD appeared at the Tent of Meeting to all the Israelites.

וַיֹּֽאמְרוּ֙ כָּל־הָ֣עֵדָ֔ה לִרְגּ֥וֹם אֹתָ֖ם בָּאֲבָנִ֑ים וּכְב֣וֹד יְהוָ֗ה נִרְאָה֙ בְּאֹ֣הֶל מוֹעֵ֔ד אֶֽל־כָּל־בְּנֵ֖י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃פ

11
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֤'mer yehvah֙ 'el-moshshe֔h 'ad-'a֥nah yena'atzu֖niy ha'a֣m hazּe֑h ve'ad-'a֨nah֙ lo'-ya'ami֣ynu bi֔y bּekol֙ haֽ'ot֔ot 'ashshe֥r 'ashsi֖ytiy bּeqirebּֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The LORD said to Moses, "How long will these people treat me with contempt? How long will they refuse to believe in me, in spite of all the signs I have performed among them?

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר יְהוָה֙ אֶל־מֹשֶׁ֔ה עַד־אָ֥נָה יְנַאֲצֻ֖נִי הָעָ֣ם הַזֶּ֑ה וְעַד־אָ֨נָה֙ לֹא־יַאֲמִ֣ינוּ בִ֔י בְּכֹל֙ הָֽאֹת֔וֹת אֲשֶׁ֥ר עָשִׂ֖יתִי בְּקִרְבּֽוֹ׃

12
Phonetic (Hebrew): akּe֥nּu badּe֖ber ve'orishshe֑nּu ve'eֽ'eshseh֙ 'oֽteka֔ legoy-gּad֥ol ve'atz֖um mimּeֽnּu׃
Edified Edition (EDE)I will strike them with a plague and destroy them, but I will make you into a nation greater and stronger than they."

אַכֶּ֥נּוּ בַדֶּ֖בֶר וְאוֹרִשֶׁ֑נּוּ וְאֶֽעֱשֶׂה֙ אֹֽתְךָ֔ לְגוֹי־גָּד֥וֹל וְעָצ֖וּם מִמֶּֽנּוּ׃

13
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֥'mer moshshe֖h 'el-yehva֑h veshshame'֣u mitzera֔yim kּiֽy-he'eli֧yta bekochaka֛ 'et-ha'a֥m hazּe֖h miqּirebּֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Moses said to the LORD, "Then the Egyptians will hear about it! By your power you brought these people up from among them.

וַיֹּ֥אמֶר מֹשֶׁ֖ה אֶל־יְהוָ֑ה וְשָׁמְע֣וּ מִצְרַ֔יִם כִּֽי־הֶעֱלִ֧יתָ בְכֹחֲךָ֛ אֶת־הָעָ֥ם הַזֶּ֖ה מִקִּרְבּֽוֹ׃

14
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'amer֗u 'el-yoshsheb֮ ha'a֣retz hazּo't֒ shshaֽme'u֙ kּiֽy-'atּa֣h yehva֔h bּeqe֖reb ha'a֣m hazּe֑h 'ashsher-'a֨yin bּe'a֜yin nire'a֣h ׀ 'atּa֣h yehva֗h va'anaֽneka֙ 'ome֣d 'alehe֔m ube'amּu֣d 'ana֗n 'atּa֨h hole֤ke lipeneyhem֙ yoma֔m ube'amּ֥ud 'e֖shsh laֽyelah׃
Edified Edition (EDE)And they will tell the inhabitants of this land about it. They have already heard that you, the LORD, are with these people and that you, the LORD, have been seen face to face, that your cloud stays over them, and that you go before them in a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night.

וְאָמְר֗וּ אֶל־יוֹשֵׁב֮ הָאָ֣רֶץ הַזֹּאת֒ שָֽׁמְעוּ֙ כִּֽי־אַתָּ֣ה יְהוָ֔ה בְּקֶ֖רֶב הָעָ֣ם הַזֶּ֑ה אֲשֶׁר־עַ֨יִן בְּעַ֜יִן נִרְאָ֣ה ׀ אַתָּ֣ה יְהוָ֗ה וַעֲנָֽנְךָ֙ עֹמֵ֣ד עֲלֵהֶ֔ם וּבְעַמֻּ֣ד עָנָ֗ן אַתָּ֨ה הֹלֵ֤ךְ לִפְנֵיהֶם֙ יוֹמָ֔ם וּבְעַמּ֥וּד אֵ֖שׁ לָֽיְלָה׃

15
Phonetic (Hebrew): vehematּa֛h 'et-ha'a֥m hazּe֖h kּe'i֣yshsh 'echa֑d ve'aֽmeru֙ hagּoyi֔m 'ashsher-shshame'֥u 'eֽt-shshime'aka֖ le'moֽr׃
Edified Edition (EDE)If you put all these people to death, the nations who have heard this report about you will say,

וְהֵמַתָּ֛ה אֶת־הָעָ֥ם הַזֶּ֖ה כְּאִ֣ישׁ אֶחָ֑ד וְאָֽמְרוּ֙ הַגּוֹיִ֔ם אֲשֶׁר־שָׁמְע֥וּ אֶֽת־שִׁמְעֲךָ֖ לֵאמֹֽר׃

16
Phonetic (Hebrew): mibּiletּi֞y yeko֣let yehva֗h lehabiy'֙ 'et-ha'a֣m hazּe֔h 'el-ha'a֖retz 'ashsher-nishshebּa֣ lahe֑m vayּishshechate֖m bּamּidebּaֽr׃
Edified Edition (EDE)'the LORD was not able to bring these people into the land he promised them on oath, so he slaughtered them in the wilderness.'

מִבִּלְתִּ֞י יְכֹ֣לֶת יְהוָ֗ה לְהָבִיא֙ אֶת־הָעָ֣ם הַזֶּ֔ה אֶל־הָאָ֖רֶץ אֲשֶׁר־נִשְׁבַּ֣ע לָהֶ֑ם וַיִּשְׁחָטֵ֖ם בַּמִּדְבָּֽר׃

17
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'atּa֕h yigedּal-na֖ kּo֣cha 'adona֑y kּa'ashshe֥r dּibּa֖retּa le'moֽr׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"Now may the Lord’s strength be displayed, just as you have declared:

וְעַתָּ֕ה יִגְדַּל־נָ֖א כֹּ֣חַ אֲדֹנָ֑י כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר דִּבַּ֖רְתָּ לֵאמֹֽר׃

18
Phonetic (Hebrew): yehva֗h 'e֤reke 'apּa֨yim֙ verab-che֔sed noshse֥ 'avo֖n vapa֑shsha venaqּeh֙ lo֣ yenaqּe֔h pּoqe֞d 'avo֤n 'abot֙ 'al-bּani֔ym 'al-shshilּeshshi֖ym ve'al-ribּe'iֽym׃
Edified Edition (EDE)'the LORD is slow to anger, abounding in love and forgiving sin and rebellion. Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished; he punishes the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation.'

יְהוָ֗ה אֶ֤רֶךְ אַפַּ֨יִם֙ וְרַב־חֶ֔סֶד נֹשֵׂ֥א עָוֺ֖ן וָפָ֑שַׁע וְנַקֵּה֙ לֹ֣א יְנַקֶּ֔ה פֹּקֵ֞ד עֲוֺ֤ן אָבוֹת֙ עַל־בָּנִ֔ים עַל־שִׁלֵּשִׁ֖ים וְעַל־רִבֵּעִֽים׃

19
Phonetic (Hebrew): selaֽch-na֗ la'avo֛n ha'a֥m hazּe֖h kּego֣del chasedּe֑ka veka'ashshe֤r nashsa֨'tah֙ la'a֣m hazּe֔h mimּitzera֖yim ve'ad-heֽnּah׃
Edified Edition (EDE)In accordance with your great love, forgive the sin of these people, just as you have pardoned them from the time they left Egypt until now."

סְלַֽח־נָ֗א לַעֲוֺ֛ן הָעָ֥ם הַזֶּ֖ה כְּגֹ֣דֶל חַסְדֶּ֑ךָ וְכַאֲשֶׁ֤ר נָשָׂ֨אתָה֙ לָעָ֣ם הַזֶּ֔ה מִמִּצְרַ֖יִם וְעַד־הֵֽנָּה׃

20
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֣'mer yehva֔h sala֖chetּiy kּidebareֽka׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The LORD replied, "I have forgiven them, as you asked.

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר יְהוָ֔ה סָלַ֖חְתִּי כִּדְבָרֶֽךָ׃

21
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'ula֖m chay-'a֑niy veyimּale֥ kebod-yehva֖h 'et-kּal-ha'aֽretz׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Nevertheless, as surely as I live and as surely as the glory of the LORD fills the whole earth,

וְאוּלָ֖ם חַי־אָ֑נִי וְיִמָּלֵ֥א כְבוֹד־יְהוָ֖ה אֶת־כָּל־הָאָֽרֶץ׃

22
Phonetic (Hebrew): kּi֣y kal-ha'anashshi֗ym haro'i֤ym 'et-kּebodiy֙ ve'et-'o֣tota֔y 'ashsher-'ashsi֥ytiy bemitzera֖yim ubamּidebּa֑r vayenasּ֣u 'oti֗y ze֚h 'e֣shser pּe'ami֔ym velo֥ shshame'֖u bּeqoliֽy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)not one of those who saw my glory and the signs I performed in Egypt and in the wilderness but who disobeyed me and tested me ten times,

כִּ֣י כָל־הָאֲנָשִׁ֗ים הָרֹאִ֤ים אֶת־כְּבֹדִי֙ וְאֶת־אֹ֣תֹתַ֔י אֲשֶׁר־עָשִׂ֥יתִי בְמִצְרַ֖יִם וּבַמִּדְבָּ֑ר וַיְנַסּ֣וּ אֹתִ֗י זֶ֚ה עֶ֣שֶׂר פְּעָמִ֔ים וְלֹ֥א שָׁמְע֖וּ בְּקוֹלִֽי׃

23
Phonetic (Hebrew): im-yire'u֙ 'et-ha'a֔retz 'ashshe֥r nishshebּa֖'etּiy la'abota֑m vekal-mena'atza֖y lo֥ yire'ֽuha׃
Edified Edition (EDE)not one of them will ever see the land I promised on oath to their ancestors. No one who has treated me with contempt will ever see it.

אִם־יִרְאוּ֙ אֶת־הָאָ֔רֶץ אֲשֶׁ֥ר נִשְׁבַּ֖עְתִּי לַאֲבֹתָ֑ם וְכָל־מְנַאֲצַ֖י לֹ֥א יִרְאֽוּהָ׃

24
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'abedּi֣y kale֗b 'e֣qeb haֽyeta֞h r֤ucha 'ache֨ret֙ 'imּ֔o vayemalּe֖ 'achara֑y vahabiֽy'oti֗yv 'el-ha'a֨retz֙ 'ashsher-bּa֣ shsha֔mּah vezare'֖o yorishsheֽnּah׃
Edified Edition (EDE)But because my servant Caleb has a different spirit and follows me wholeheartedly, I will bring him into the land he went to, and his descendants will inherit it.

וְעַבְדִּ֣י כָלֵ֗ב עֵ֣קֶב הָֽיְתָ֞ה ר֤וּחַ אַחֶ֨רֶת֙ עִמּ֔וֹ וַיְמַלֵּ֖א אַחֲרָ֑י וַהֲבִֽיאֹתִ֗יו אֶל־הָאָ֨רֶץ֙ אֲשֶׁר־בָּ֣א שָׁ֔מָּה וְזַרְע֖וֹ יוֹרִשֶֽׁנָּה׃

25
Phonetic (Hebrew): vehaֽ'amaleqi֥y vehaֽkּena'ani֖y yoshshe֣b bּa'e֑meq macha֗r pּen֨u use'֥u lake֛m hamּidebּa֖r dּe֥reke yam-sֽup׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)Since the Amalekites and the Canaanites are living in the valleys, turn back tomorrow and set out toward the desert along the route to the Red Sea."

וְהָֽעֲמָלֵקִ֥י וְהַֽכְּנַעֲנִ֖י יוֹשֵׁ֣ב בָּעֵ֑מֶק מָחָ֗ר פְּנ֨וּ וּסְע֥וּ לָכֶ֛ם הַמִּדְבָּ֖ר דֶּ֥רֶךְ יַם־סֽוּף׃פ

26
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayedabּe֣r yehva֔h 'el-moshshe֥h ve'eֽl-'aharo֖n le'moֽr׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The LORD said to Moses and Aaron:

וַיְדַבֵּ֣ר יְהוָ֔ה אֶל־מֹשֶׁ֥ה וְאֶֽל־אַהֲרֹ֖ן לֵאמֹֽר׃

27
Phonetic (Hebrew): ad-mata֗y la'eda֤h haֽra'ah֙ hazּo֔'t 'ashshe֛r he֥mּah malּiyni֖ym 'ala֑y 'et-tּelunּ֞ot bּene֣y yishsera'e֗l 'ashshe֨r he֧mּah malּiyni֛ym 'ala֖y shshamaֽ'etּiy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"How long will this wicked community grumble against me? I have heard the complaints of these grumbling Israelites.

עַד־מָתַ֗י לָעֵדָ֤ה הָֽרָעָה֙ הַזֹּ֔את אֲשֶׁ֛ר הֵ֥מָּה מַלִּינִ֖ים עָלָ֑י אֶת־תְּלֻנּ֞וֹת בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל אֲשֶׁ֨ר הֵ֧מָּה מַלִּינִ֛ים עָלַ֖י שָׁמָֽעְתִּי׃

28
Phonetic (Hebrew): emo֣r 'alehe֗m chay-'a֨niy֙ ne'um-yehva֔h 'im-lo֕ kּa'ashshe֥r dּibּaretּe֖m bּe'azena֑y kּe֖n 'eֽ'eshse֥h lakeֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)So tell them, 'As surely as I live, declares the LORD, I will do to you the very things I heard you say:

אֱמֹ֣ר אֲלֵהֶ֗ם חַי־אָ֨נִי֙ נְאֻם־יְהוָ֔ה אִם־לֹ֕א כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר דִּבַּרְתֶּ֖ם בְּאָזְנָ֑י כֵּ֖ן אֶֽעֱשֶׂ֥ה לָכֶֽם׃

29
Phonetic (Hebrew): bּamּidebּa֣r ha֠zּeh yipּel֨u pigereyke֜m vekal-pּequdeykem֙ lekal-misepּareke֔m mibּe֛n 'eshseri֥ym shshana֖h vama֑'elah 'ashshe֥r haliֽynote֖m 'alaֽy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)In this wilderness your bodies will fall, every one of you twenty years old or older who was counted in the census and who has grumbled against me.

בַּמִּדְבָּ֣ר הַ֠זֶּה יִפְּל֨וּ פִגְרֵיכֶ֜ם וְכָל־פְּקֻדֵיכֶם֙ לְכָל־מִסְפַּרְכֶ֔ם מִבֶּ֛ן עֶשְׂרִ֥ים שָׁנָ֖ה וָמָ֑עְלָה אֲשֶׁ֥ר הֲלִֽינֹתֶ֖ם עָלָֽי׃

30
Phonetic (Hebrew): im-'atּem֙ tּabo֣'u 'el-ha'a֔retz 'ashshe֤r nashsa֨'tiy֙ 'et-yadi֔y leshshakּe֥n 'eteke֖m bּa֑hּ kּi֚y 'im-kּale֣b bּen-yepunּe֔h viyhoshshu֖'a bּin-nֽun׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Not one of you will enter the land I swore with uplifted hand to make your home, except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.

אִם־אַתֶּם֙ תָּבֹ֣אוּ אֶל־הָאָ֔רֶץ אֲשֶׁ֤ר נָשָׂ֨אתִי֙ אֶת־יָדִ֔י לְשַׁכֵּ֥ן אֶתְכֶ֖ם בָּ֑הּ כִּ֚י אִם־כָּלֵ֣ב בֶּן־יְפֻנֶּ֔ה וִיהוֹשֻׁ֖עַ בִּן־נֽוּן׃

31
Phonetic (Hebrew): veta֨pּeke֔m 'ashshe֥r 'amaretּe֖m laba֣z yiheye֑h vehebey'ti֣y 'ota֔m veyaֽde'u֙ 'et-ha'a֔retz 'ashshe֥r me'asetּe֖m bּaֽhּ׃
Edified Edition (EDE)As for your children that you said would be taken as plunder, I will bring them in to enjoy the land you have rejected.

וְטַ֨פְּכֶ֔ם אֲשֶׁ֥ר אֲמַרְתֶּ֖ם לָבַ֣ז יִהְיֶ֑ה וְהֵבֵיאתִ֣י אֹתָ֔ם וְיָֽדְעוּ֙ אֶת־הָאָ֔רֶץ אֲשֶׁ֥ר מְאַסְתֶּ֖ם בָּֽהּ׃

32
Phonetic (Hebrew): upigereyke֖m 'atּe֑m yipּel֖u bּamּidebּa֥r hazּeֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)But as for you, your bodies will fall in this wilderness.

וּפִגְרֵיכֶ֖ם אַתֶּ֑ם יִפְּל֖וּ בַּמִּדְבָּ֥ר הַזֶּֽה׃

33
Phonetic (Hebrew): u֠beneykem yihey֨u ro'i֤ym bּamּidebּar֙ 'arebּa'i֣ym shshana֔h venashse'֖u 'et-zenuteyke֑m 'ad-tּo֥m pּigereyke֖m bּamּidebּaֽr׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Your children will be shepherds here for forty years, suffering for your unfaithfulness, until the last of your bodies lies in the wilderness.

וּ֠בְנֵיכֶם יִהְי֨וּ רֹעִ֤ים בַּמִּדְבָּר֙ אַרְבָּעִ֣ים שָׁנָ֔ה וְנָשְׂא֖וּ אֶת־זְנוּתֵיכֶ֑ם עַד־תֹּ֥ם פִּגְרֵיכֶ֖ם בַּמִּדְבָּֽר׃

34
Phonetic (Hebrew): bּemisepּa֨r hayּami֜ym 'ashsher-tּaretּe֣m 'et-ha'aretz֮ 'arebּa'i֣ym yom֒ y֣om lashshּana֞h y֣om lashshּana֗h tּishse'u֙ 'et-'avono֣teyke֔m 'arebּa'i֖ym shshana֑h viֽyda'etּe֖m 'et-tּenu'atiֽy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)For forty years, one year for each of the forty days you explored the land, you will suffer for your sins and know what it is like to have me against you.'

בְּמִסְפַּ֨ר הַיָּמִ֜ים אֲשֶׁר־תַּרְתֶּ֣ם אֶת־הָאָרֶץ֮ אַרְבָּעִ֣ים יוֹם֒ י֣וֹם לַשָּׁנָ֞ה י֣וֹם לַשָּׁנָ֗ה תִּשְׂאוּ֙ אֶת־עֲוֺנֹ֣תֵיכֶ֔ם אַרְבָּעִ֖ים שָׁנָ֑ה וִֽידַעְתֶּ֖ם אֶת־תְּנוּאָתִֽי׃

35
Phonetic (Hebrew): ani֣y yehvah֮ dּibּaretּiy֒ 'im-lo֣ ׀ zo֣'t 'ֽe'eshse֗h lekal-ha'eda֤h haֽra'ah֙ hazּo֔'t hanּo'adi֖ym 'ala֑y bּamּidebּa֥r hazּe֛h yitּa֖mּu veshsha֥m yamuֽtu׃
Edified Edition (EDE)I, the LORD, have spoken, and I will surely do these things to this whole wicked community, which has banded together against me. They will meet their end in this wilderness; here they will die."

אֲנִ֣י יְהוָה֮ דִּבַּרְתִּי֒ אִם־לֹ֣א ׀ זֹ֣את אֶֽעֱשֶׂ֗ה לְכָל־הָעֵדָ֤ה הָֽרָעָה֙ הַזֹּ֔את הַנּוֹעָדִ֖ים עָלָ֑י בַּמִּדְבָּ֥ר הַזֶּ֛ה יִתַּ֖מּוּ וְשָׁ֥ם יָמֻֽתוּ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): veha֣'anashshi֔ym 'ashsher-shshala֥ch moshshe֖h lat֣ur 'et-ha'a֑retz vayּashshu֗bu vylvnv vayּalּi֤ynu 'alayv֙ 'et-kּal-ha֣'eda֔h lehotzi֥y dibּa֖h 'al-ha'aֽretz׃
Edified Edition (EDE)So the men Moses had sent to explore the land, who returned and made the whole community grumble against him by spreading a bad report about it,

וְהָ֣אֲנָשִׁ֔ים אֲשֶׁר־שָׁלַ֥ח מֹשֶׁ֖ה לָת֣וּר אֶת־הָאָ֑רֶץ וַיָּשֻׁ֗בוּ וילונו וַיַּלִּ֤ינוּ עָלָיו֙ אֶת־כָּל־הָ֣עֵדָ֔ה לְהוֹצִ֥יא דִבָּ֖ה עַל־הָאָֽרֶץ׃

37
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּamu֨tu֙ haֽ'anashshi֔ym motzi'e֥y dibּat-ha'a֖retz ra'a֑h bּamּagּepa֖h lipene֥y yehvaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)these men who were responsible for spreading the bad report about the land were struck down and died of a plague before the LORD.

וַיָּמֻ֨תוּ֙ הָֽאֲנָשִׁ֔ים מוֹצִאֵ֥י דִבַּת־הָאָ֖רֶץ רָעָ֑ה בַּמַּגֵּפָ֖ה לִפְנֵ֥י יְהוָֽה׃

38
Phonetic (Hebrew): viyhoshshu֣'a bּin-n֔un vekale֖b bּen-yepunּe֑h chayu֙ min-ha'anashshi֣ym hahe֔m haֽholeki֖ym lat֥ur 'et-ha'aֽretz׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Of the men who went to explore the land, only Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh survived.

וִיהוֹשֻׁ֣עַ בִּן־נ֔וּן וְכָלֵ֖ב בֶּן־יְפֻנֶּ֑ה חָיוּ֙ מִן־הָאֲנָשִׁ֣ים הָהֵ֔ם הַֽהֹלְכִ֖ים לָת֥וּר אֶת־הָאָֽרֶץ׃

39
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayedabּe֤r moshsheh֙ 'et-hadּebari֣ym ha'e֔lּeh 'eֽl-kּal-bּene֖y yishsera'e֑l vayּiֽte'abּel֥u ha'a֖m me'oֽd׃
Edified Edition (EDE)When Moses reported this to all the Israelites, they mourned bitterly.

וַיְדַבֵּ֤ר מֹשֶׁה֙ אֶת־הַדְּבָרִ֣ים הָאֵ֔לֶּה אֶֽל־כָּל־בְּנֵ֖י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וַיִּֽתְאַבְּל֥וּ הָעָ֖ם מְאֹֽד׃

40
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּashshekּi֣mu babּo֔qer vayּaֽ'al֥u 'el-ro'shsh-haha֖r le'mo֑r hinּe֗nּu ve'ali֛ynu 'el-hamּaq֛om 'ashsher-'ama֥r yehva֖h kּi֥y chataֽ'nu׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Early the next morning they set out for the highest point in the hill country, saying, "Now we are here! We will go up to the place the LORD promised. Surely we have sinned!"

וַיַּשְׁכִּ֣מוּ בַבֹּ֔קֶר וַיַּֽעֲל֥וּ אֶל־רֹאשׁ־הָהָ֖ר לֵאמֹ֑ר הִנֶּ֗נּוּ וְעָלִ֛ינוּ אֶל־הַמָּק֛וֹם אֲשֶׁר־אָמַ֥ר יְהוָ֖ה כִּ֥י חָטָֽאנוּ׃

41
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֣'mer moshshe֔h la֥mּah zּe֛h 'atּe֥m 'oberi֖ym 'et-pּi֣y yehva֑h vehi֖v lo֥ titzelaֽch׃
Edified Edition (EDE)But Moses said, "Why are you disobeying the LORD's command? This will not succeed!

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר מֹשֶׁ֔ה לָ֥מָּה זֶּ֛ה אַתֶּ֥ם עֹבְרִ֖ים אֶת־פִּ֣י יְהוָ֑ה וְהִ֖וא לֹ֥א תִצְלָֽח׃

42
Phonetic (Hebrew): aֽl-tּa'al֔u kּi֛y 'e֥yn yehva֖h bּeqirebּeke֑m velo'֙ tּinּa֣gep֔u lipene֖y 'oyebeykeֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Do not go up, because the LORD is not with you. You will be defeated by your enemies,

אַֽל־תַּעֲל֔וּ כִּ֛י אֵ֥ין יְהוָ֖ה בְּקִרְבְּכֶ֑ם וְלֹא֙ תִּנָּ֣גְפ֔וּ לִפְנֵ֖י אֹיְבֵיכֶֽם׃

43
Phonetic (Hebrew): kּiy֩ ha'amaleqi֨y vehakּena'ani֥y shsham֙ lipeneyke֔m unepaletּe֖m bּecha֑reb kּiֽy-'al-kּe֤n shshabetּem֙ me'achare֣y yehva֔h velo'-yiheye֥h yehva֖h 'imּakeֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)for the Amalekites and the Canaanites will face you there. Because you have turned away from the LORD, he will not be with you and you will fall by the sword."

כִּי֩ הָעֲמָלֵקִ֨י וְהַכְּנַעֲנִ֥י שָׁם֙ לִפְנֵיכֶ֔ם וּנְפַלְתֶּ֖ם בֶּחָ֑רֶב כִּֽי־עַל־כֵּ֤ן שַׁבְתֶּם֙ מֵאַחֲרֵ֣י יְהוָ֔ה וְלֹא־יִהְיֶ֥ה יְהוָ֖ה עִמָּכֶֽם׃

44
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa'epּi֕lu la'al֖ot 'el-ro֣'shsh haha֑r va'ar֤on bּeriyt-yehvah֙ umoshshe֔h lo'-ma֖shshu miqּe֥reb haֽmּachaneֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Nevertheless, in their presumption they went up toward the highest point in the hill country, though neither Moses nor the Ark of the LORD’s Covenant moved from the camp.

וַיַּעְפִּ֕לוּ לַעֲל֖וֹת אֶל־רֹ֣אשׁ הָהָ֑ר וַאֲר֤וֹן בְּרִית־יְהוָה֙ וּמֹשֶׁ֔ה לֹא־מָ֖שׁוּ מִקֶּ֥רֶב הַֽמַּחֲנֶֽה׃

45
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּe֤red ha'amaleqiy֙ vehaֽkּena'ani֔y hayּoshshe֖b bּaha֣r hah֑u vayּakּ֥um vaֽyּakּet֖um 'ad-haֽcharemaֽh׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)Then the Amalekites and the Canaanites who lived in that hill country came down and attacked them and beat them down all the way to Hormah.

וַיֵּ֤רֶד הָעֲמָלֵקִי֙ וְהַֽכְּנַעֲנִ֔י הַיֹּשֵׁ֖ב בָּהָ֣ר הַה֑וּא וַיַּכּ֥וּם וַֽיַּכְּת֖וּם עַד־הַֽחָרְמָֽה׃פ
