Chapter 16

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiqּa֣ch qo֔rach bּen-yitzeha֥r bּen-qeha֖t bּen-levi֑y vedata֨n va'abiyra֜m bּene֧y 'eliy'a֛b ve'֥on bּen-pּe֖let bּene֥y re'ubeֽn׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Korah [1] son of Izhar, the son of Kohath, the son of Levi, and certain Reubenites—Dathan and Abiram, sons of Eliab, and On son of Peleth—became insolent

וַיִּקַּ֣ח קֹ֔רַח בֶּן־יִצְהָ֥ר בֶּן־קְהָ֖ת בֶּן־לֵוִ֑י וְדָתָ֨ן וַאֲבִירָ֜ם בְּנֵ֧י אֱלִיאָ֛ב וְא֥וֹן בֶּן־פֶּ֖לֶת בְּנֵ֥י רְאוּבֵֽן׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּaqu֨mu֙ lipene֣y moshshe֔h va'anashshi֥ym mibּeneֽy-yishsera'e֖l chamishshּi֣ym uma'ta֑yim neshsiy'e֥y 'eda֛h qeri'e֥y mo'e֖d 'aneshshey-shsheֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)and rose up against Moses. With them were 250 Israelite men, well-known community leaders who had been appointed members of the council.

וַיָּקֻ֨מוּ֙ לִפְנֵ֣י מֹשֶׁ֔ה וַאֲנָשִׁ֥ים מִבְּנֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל חֲמִשִּׁ֣ים וּמָאתָ֑יִם נְשִׂיאֵ֥י עֵדָ֛ה קְרִאֵ֥י מוֹעֵ֖ד אַנְשֵׁי־שֵֽׁם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiֽqּahal֞u 'al-moshshe֣h ve'aֽl-'aharo֗n vayּo'mer֣u 'alehem֮ rab-lakem֒ kּi֤y kal-haֽ'edah֙ kּulּa֣m qedoshshi֔ym ubetoka֖m yehva֑h umadּ֥u'a tּiֽtenashsּe'֖u 'al-qeha֥l yehvaֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)They gathered as a group against Moses and Aaron and said to them, "You have gone too far! The whole community is holy, every one of them, and the LORD is among them. Why then do you set yourselves above the LORD’s assembly?"

וַיִּֽקָּהֲל֞וּ עַל־מֹשֶׁ֣ה וְעַֽל־אַהֲרֹ֗ן וַיֹּאמְר֣וּ אֲלֵהֶם֮ רַב־לָכֶם֒ כִּ֤י כָל־הָֽעֵדָה֙ כֻּלָּ֣ם קְדֹשִׁ֔ים וּבְתוֹכָ֖ם יְהוָ֑ה וּמַדּ֥וּעַ תִּֽתְנַשְּׂא֖וּ עַל־קְהַ֥ל יְהוָֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּishshema֣ moshshe֔h vayּipּo֖l 'al-pּanaֽyv׃

Edified Edition (EDE)When Moses heard this, he fell facedown.

וַיִּשְׁמַ֣ע מֹשֶׁ֔ה וַיִּפֹּ֖ל עַל־פָּנָֽיו׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayedabּe֨r 'el-qo֜rach ve'eֽl-kּal-'adato֮ le'mor֒ bּo֠qer veyoda֨ yehva֧h 'et-'ashsher-l֛o ve'et-haqּad֖oshsh vehiqeri֣yb 'ela֑yv ve'e֛t 'ashshe֥r yibechar-bּ֖o yaqeri֥yb 'elaֽyv׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Then he said to Korah and all his followers: "In the morning the LORD will show who belongs to him and who is holy, and he will have that person come near him. The man he chooses he will cause to come near him.

וַיְדַבֵּ֨ר אֶל־קֹ֜רַח וְאֶֽל־כָּל־עֲדָתוֹ֮ לֵאמֹר֒ בֹּ֠קֶר וְיֹדַ֨ע יְהוָ֧ה אֶת־אֲשֶׁר־ל֛וֹ וְאֶת־הַקָּד֖וֹשׁ וְהִקְרִ֣יב אֵלָ֑יו וְאֵ֛ת אֲשֶׁ֥ר יִבְחַר־בּ֖וֹ יַקְרִ֥יב אֵלָֽיו׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): zo֖'t 'ashs֑u qechu-lake֣m machetּ֔ot qo֖rach vekal-'adatֽo׃

Edified Edition (EDE)You, Korah, and all your followers are to do this: Take censers

זֹ֖את עֲשׂ֑וּ קְחוּ־לָכֶ֣ם מַחְתּ֔וֹת קֹ֖רַח וְכָל־עֲדָתֽוֹ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): uten֣u bahe֣n ׀ 'e֡shsh veshsiymu֩ 'aleyhe֨n qeto֜ret lipene֤y yehvah֙ macha֔r vehaya֗h ha'i֛yshsh 'ashsher-yibecha֥r yehva֖h h֣u haqּad֑oshsh rab-lake֖m bּene֥y leviֽy׃

Edified Edition (EDE)and tomorrow put burning coals and incense in them before the LORD. The man the LORD chooses will be the one who is holy. You Levites have gone too far!"

וּתְנ֣וּ בָהֵ֣ן ׀ אֵ֡שׁ וְשִׂימוּ֩ עֲלֵיהֶ֨ן קְטֹ֜רֶת לִפְנֵ֤י יְהוָה֙ מָחָ֔ר וְהָיָ֗ה הָאִ֛ישׁ אֲשֶׁר־יִבְחַ֥ר יְהוָ֖ה ה֣וּא הַקָּד֑וֹשׁ רַב־לָכֶ֖ם בְּנֵ֥י לֵוִֽי׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֥'mer moshshe֖h 'el-qo֑rach shshime'u-na֖ bּene֥y leviֽy׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Moses also said to Korah, "Now listen, you Levites!"

וַיֹּ֥אמֶר מֹשֶׁ֖ה אֶל־קֹ֑רַח שִׁמְעוּ־נָ֖א בְּנֵ֥י לֵוִֽי׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): hame'a֣t mikּe֗m kּiֽy-hibedּiyl֩ 'elohe֨y yishsera'e֤l 'etekem֙ me'ada֣t yishsera'e֔l lehaqeri֥yb 'eteke֖m 'ela֑yv la'abo֗d 'et-'abodat֙ mishshekּa֣n yehva֔h vela'amo֛d lipene֥y ha'eda֖h leshsharetaֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Is it not enough for you that the God of Israel has separated you from the rest of the Israelite community and brought you near himself to do the work at the LORD’s Tabernacle and to stand before the community and minister to them?

הַמְעַ֣ט מִכֶּ֗ם כִּֽי־הִבְדִּיל֩ אֱלֹהֵ֨י יִשְׂרָאֵ֤ל אֶתְכֶם֙ מֵעֲדַ֣ת יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל לְהַקְרִ֥יב אֶתְכֶ֖ם אֵלָ֑יו לַעֲבֹ֗ד אֶת־עֲבֹדַת֙ מִשְׁכַּ֣ן יְהוָ֔ה וְלַעֲמֹ֛ד לִפְנֵ֥י הָעֵדָ֖ה לְשָׁרְתָֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּaqereb֙ 'oֽteka֔ ve'et-kּal-'ache֥yka beney-levi֖y 'itּa֑ke ubiqּashshetּe֖m gּam-kּehunּaֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)He has brought you and all your fellow Levites near himself, but now you are trying to get the priesthood too.

וַיַּקְרֵב֙ אֹֽתְךָ֔ וְאֶת־כָּל־אַחֶ֥יךָ בְנֵי־לֵוִ֖י אִתָּ֑ךְ וּבִקַּשְׁתֶּ֖ם גַּם־כְּהֻנָּֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): lake֗n 'atּah֙ vekal-'ada֣teka֔ hanּo'adi֖ym 'al-yehva֑h ve'aharo֣n mah-h֔u kּi֥y tlvnv talּi֖ynu 'alaֽyv׃

Edified Edition (EDE)It is against the LORD that you and all your followers have banded together. Who is Aaron that you should grumble against him?"

לָכֵ֗ן אַתָּה֙ וְכָל־עֲדָ֣תְךָ֔ הַנֹּעָדִ֖ים עַל־יְהוָ֑ה וְאַהֲרֹ֣ן מַה־ה֔וּא כִּ֥י תלונו תַלִּ֖ינוּ עָלָֽיו׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּishshela֣ch moshshe֔h liqero֛ ledata֥n vela'abiyra֖m bּene֣y 'eliy'a֑b vayּo'mer֖u lo֥ na'aleֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Then Moses summoned Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab. But they said, "We will not come!"

וַיִּשְׁלַ֣ח מֹשֶׁ֔ה לִקְרֹ֛א לְדָתָ֥ן וְלַאֲבִירָ֖ם בְּנֵ֣י אֱלִיאָ֑ב וַיֹּאמְר֖וּ לֹ֥א נַעֲלֶֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): hame'a֗t kּi֤y heֽ'eliyta֨nu֙ me'e֨retz zaba֤t chalab֙ udeba֔shsh lahamiyte֖nu bּamּidebּa֑r kּiֽy-tishsetּare֥r 'ale֖ynu gּam-hishsetּareֽr׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Is it not enough that you have brought us up out of a land flowing with milk and honey to kill us in the wilderness? And now you also want to lord it over us!

הַמְעַ֗ט כִּ֤י הֶֽעֱלִיתָ֨נוּ֙ מֵאֶ֨רֶץ זָבַ֤ת חָלָב֙ וּדְבַ֔שׁ לַהֲמִיתֵ֖נוּ בַּמִּדְבָּ֑ר כִּֽי־תִשְׂתָּרֵ֥ר עָלֵ֖ינוּ גַּם־הִשְׂתָּרֵֽר׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): a֡p lo֣ 'el-'eretz֩ zaba֨t chala֤b udebashsh֙ habi֣y'ota֔nu vatּi֨tּen-la֔nu nachala֖t shsade֣h vaka֑rem ha'eyne֞y ha'anashshi֥ym hahe֛m tּenaqּe֖r lo֥ na'aleֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Moreover, you haven't brought us into a land flowing with milk and honey or given us an inheritance of fields and vineyards. Do you think you can blind these men? We will not come!"

אַ֡ף לֹ֣א אֶל־אֶרֶץ֩ זָבַ֨ת חָלָ֤ב וּדְבַשׁ֙ הֲבִ֣יאֹתָ֔נוּ וַתִּ֨תֶּן־לָ֔נוּ נַחֲלַ֖ת שָׂדֶ֣ה וָכָ֑רֶם הַעֵינֵ֞י הָאֲנָשִׁ֥ים הָהֵ֛ם תְּנַקֵּ֖ר לֹ֥א נַעֲלֶֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּi֤char lemoshsheh֙ me'o֔d vayּo֨'mer֙ 'el-yehva֔h 'al-tּe֖pen 'el-minechata֑m lo֠ cham֨or 'echa֤d mehem֙ nashsa֔'tiy velo֥ hare'o֖tiy 'et-'acha֥d meheֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Then Moses became very angry and said to the LORD, "Do not accept their offering. I have not taken so much as a donkey from them, nor have I wronged any of them."

וַיִּ֤חַר לְמֹשֶׁה֙ מְאֹ֔ד וַיֹּ֨אמֶר֙ אֶל־יְהוָ֔ה אַל־תֵּ֖פֶן אֶל־מִנְחָתָ֑ם לֹ֠א חֲמ֨וֹר אֶחָ֤ד מֵהֶם֙ נָשָׂ֔אתִי וְלֹ֥א הֲרֵעֹ֖תִי אֶת־אַחַ֥ד מֵהֶֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֤'mer moshsheh֙ 'el-qo֔rach 'atּah֙ vekal-'ada֣teka֔ hey֖u lipene֣y yehva֑h 'atּa֥h vahe֛m ve'aharo֖n machaֽr׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Moses said to Korah, "You and all your followers are to appear before the LORD tomorrow, you and they and Aaron.

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר מֹשֶׁה֙ אֶל־קֹ֔רַח אַתָּה֙ וְכָל־עֲדָ֣תְךָ֔ הֱי֖וּ לִפְנֵ֣י יְהוָ֑ה אַתָּ֥ה וָהֵ֛ם וְאַהֲרֹ֖ן מָחָֽר׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): uqech֣u ׀ 'i֣yshsh machetּat֗o unetatּe֤m 'aleyhem֙ qeto֔ret vehiqerabetּe֞m lipene֤y yehvah֙ 'i֣yshsh machetּat֔o chamishshּi֥ym uma'ta֖yim machetּo֑t ve'atּa֥h ve'aharo֖n 'i֥yshsh machetּatֽo׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Each man is to take his censer and put incense in it, 250 censers in all, and present it before the LORD. You and Aaron are to present your censers too."

וּקְח֣וּ ׀ אִ֣ישׁ מַחְתָּת֗וֹ וּנְתַתֶּ֤ם עֲלֵיהֶם֙ קְטֹ֔רֶת וְהִקְרַבְתֶּ֞ם לִפְנֵ֤י יְהוָה֙ אִ֣ישׁ מַחְתָּת֔וֹ חֲמִשִּׁ֥ים וּמָאתַ֖יִם מַחְתֹּ֑ת וְאַתָּ֥ה וְאַהֲרֹ֖ן אִ֥ישׁ מַחְתָּתֽוֹ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiqech֞u 'i֣yshsh machetּat֗o vayּitּen֤u 'aleyhem֙ 'e֔shsh vayּashsi֥ymu 'aleyhe֖m qeto֑ret vaֽyּa'amed֗u pּe֛tach 'o֥hel mo'e֖d umoshshe֥h ve'aharoֽn׃

Edified Edition (EDE)So each man took his censer, put burning coals and incense in it, and stood with Moses and Aaron at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting.

וַיִּקְח֞וּ אִ֣ישׁ מַחְתָּת֗וֹ וַיִּתְּנ֤וּ עֲלֵיהֶם֙ אֵ֔שׁ וַיָּשִׂ֥ימוּ עֲלֵיהֶ֖ם קְטֹ֑רֶת וַֽיַּעַמְד֗וּ פֶּ֛תַח אֹ֥הֶל מוֹעֵ֖ד וּמֹשֶׁ֥ה וְאַהֲרֹֽן׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּaqehe֨l 'aleyhe֥m qo֨rach֙ 'et-kּal-ha֣'eda֔h 'el-pּe֖tach 'o֣hel mo'e֑d vayּera֥ kebod-yehva֖h 'el-kּal-ha'edaֽh׃p

Edified Edition (EDE)When Korah had gathered all his followers in opposition to them at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting, the glory of the LORD appeared to the entire assembly.

וַיַּקְהֵ֨ל עֲלֵיהֶ֥ם קֹ֨רַח֙ אֶת־כָּל־הָ֣עֵדָ֔ה אֶל־פֶּ֖תַח אֹ֣הֶל מוֹעֵ֑ד וַיֵּרָ֥א כְבוֹד־יְהוָ֖ה אֶל־כָּל־הָעֵדָֽה׃פ

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayedabּe֣r yehva֔h 'el-moshshe֥h ve'eֽl-'aharo֖n le'moֽr׃

Edified Edition (EDE)The LORD said to Moses and Aaron,

וַיְדַבֵּ֣ר יְהוָ֔ה אֶל־מֹשֶׁ֥ה וְאֶֽל־אַהֲרֹ֖ן לֵאמֹֽר׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): hibּa֣del֔u mitּ֖oke ha'eda֣h hazּo֑'t va'akalּe֥h 'ota֖m kּeraֽga'׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"Separate yourselves from this assembly so I can put an end to them at once."

הִבָּ֣דְל֔וּ מִתּ֖וֹךְ הָעֵדָ֣ה הַזֹּ֑את וַאַכַלֶּ֥ה אֹתָ֖ם כְּרָֽגַע׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּipּel֤u 'al-pּeneyhem֙ vayּo֣'mer֔u 'e֕l 'elohe֥y harucho֖t lekal-bּashsa֑r ha'i֤yshsh 'echad֙ yecheta֔ ve'a֥l kּal-ha'eda֖h tּiqetzoֽp׃p

Edified Edition (EDE)But Moses and Aaron fell facedown and cried out, "O God, the God who gives breath to all living things, will you be angry with the entire assembly when only one man sins?"

וַיִּפְּל֤וּ עַל־פְּנֵיהֶם֙ וַיֹּ֣אמְר֔וּ אֵ֕ל אֱלֹהֵ֥י הָרוּחֹ֖ת לְכָל־בָּשָׂ֑ר הָאִ֤ישׁ אֶחָד֙ יֶחֱטָ֔א וְעַ֥ל כָּל־הָעֵדָ֖ה תִּקְצֹֽף׃פ

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayedabּe֥r yehva֖h 'el-moshshe֥h lּe'moֽr׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Then the LORD said to Moses,

וַיְדַבֵּ֥ר יְהוָ֖ה אֶל־מֹשֶׁ֥ה לֵּאמֹֽר׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): dּabּe֥r 'el-ha'eda֖h le'mo֑r heֽ'alu֙ misּabi֔yb lemishshekּan-qo֖rach dּata֥n va'abiyraֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"Say to the assembly, 'Move away from the tents of Korah, Dathan and Abiram.' "

דַּבֵּ֥ר אֶל־הָעֵדָ֖ה לֵאמֹ֑ר הֵֽעָלוּ֙ מִסָּבִ֔יב לְמִשְׁכַּן־קֹ֖רַח דָּתָ֥ן וַאֲבִירָֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֣qam moshshe֔h vayּe֖leke 'el-dּata֣n va'abiyra֑m vayּelek֥u 'achara֖yv ziqene֥y yishsera'eֽl׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Moses got up and went to Dathan and Abiram, and the elders of Israel followed him.

וַיָּ֣קָם מֹשֶׁ֔ה וַיֵּ֖לֶךְ אֶל־דָּתָ֣ן וַאֲבִירָ֑ם וַיֵּלְכ֥וּ אַחֲרָ֖יו זִקְנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayedabּe֨r 'el-ha'eda֜h le'mo֗r s֣uru na֡ me'al֩ 'ahole֨y ha'anashshi֤ym haֽreshsha'iym֙ ha'e֔lּeh ve'aֽl-tּigּe'֖u bּekal-'ashshe֣r lahe֑m pּen-tּisּap֖u bּekal-chatּo'taֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)He warned the assembly, "Move back from the tents of these wicked men! Do not touch anything belonging to them, or you will be swept away because of all their sins."

וַיְדַבֵּ֨ר אֶל־הָעֵדָ֜ה לֵאמֹ֗ר ס֣וּרוּ נָ֡א מֵעַל֩ אָהֳלֵ֨י הָאֲנָשִׁ֤ים הָֽרְשָׁעִים֙ הָאֵ֔לֶּה וְאַֽל־תִּגְּע֖וּ בְּכָל־אֲשֶׁ֣ר לָהֶ֑ם פֶּן־תִּסָּפ֖וּ בְּכָל־חַטֹּאתָֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּe'al֗u me'a֧l mishshekּan-qo֛rech dּata֥n va'abiyra֖m misּabi֑yb vedata֨n va'abiyra֜m yatze'֣u nitzּabi֗ym pּe֚tach 'ֽaholeyhe֔m uneshsheyhe֥m ubeneyhe֖m vetapּaֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)So they moved away from the tents of Korah, Dathan and Abiram. Dathan and Abiram had come out and were standing with their wives, children and little ones at the entrances to their tents.

וַיֵּעָל֗וּ מֵעַ֧ל מִשְׁכַּן־קֹ֛רֶח דָּתָ֥ן וַאֲבִירָ֖ם מִסָּבִ֑יב וְדָתָ֨ן וַאֲבִירָ֜ם יָצְא֣וּ נִצָּבִ֗ים פֶּ֚תַח אָֽהֳלֵיהֶ֔ם וּנְשֵׁיהֶ֥ם וּבְנֵיהֶ֖ם וְטַפָּֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo'mer֮ moshsheh֒ bּezo't֙ tּeֽde'֔un kּiֽy-yehva֣h shshelacha֔niy la'ashs֕ot 'e֥t kּal-haֽmּa'ashsi֖ym ha'e֑lּeh kּiy-lo֖ milּibּiֽy׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Then Moses said, "This is how you will know that the LORD has sent me to do all these things and that it was not my own idea:

וַיֹּאמֶר֮ מֹשֶׁה֒ בְּזֹאת֙ תֵּֽדְע֔וּן כִּֽי־יְהוָ֣ה שְׁלָחַ֔נִי לַעֲשׂ֕וֹת אֵ֥ת כָּל־הַֽמַּעֲשִׂ֖ים הָאֵ֑לֶּה כִּי־לֹ֖א מִלִּבִּֽי׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): im-kּem֤ot kּal-haֽ'adam֙ yemut֣un 'e֔lּeh upequdּat֙ kּal-ha֣'ada֔m yipּaqe֖d 'aleyhe֑m lo֥ yehva֖h shshelachaֽniy׃

Edified Edition (EDE)If these men die a natural death and suffer only what normally happens to people, then the LORD has not sent me.

אִם־כְּמ֤וֹת כָּל־הָֽאָדָם֙ יְמֻת֣וּן אֵ֔לֶּה וּפְקֻדַּת֙ כָּל־הָ֣אָדָ֔ם יִפָּקֵ֖ד עֲלֵיהֶ֑ם לֹ֥א יְהוָ֖ה שְׁלָחָֽנִי׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'im-bּeriy'a֞h yibera֣ yehva֗h upatzeta֨h ha'adama֤h 'et-pּi֨yha֙ ubale'a֤h 'otam֙ ve'et-kּal-'ashshe֣r lahe֔m veyared֥u chayּi֖ym shshe'o֑lah viֽyda'etּe֕m kּi֧y niֽ'atz֛u ha'anashshi֥ym ha'e֖lּeh 'et-yehvaֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)But if the LORD brings about something totally new, and the earth opens its mouth and swallows them, with everything that belongs to them, and they go down alive into the realm of the dead, then you will know that these men have treated the LORD with contempt."

וְאִם־בְּרִיאָ֞ה יִבְרָ֣א יְהוָ֗ה וּפָצְתָ֨ה הָאֲדָמָ֤ה אֶת־פִּ֨יהָ֙ וּבָלְעָ֤ה אֹתָם֙ וְאֶת־כָּל־אֲשֶׁ֣ר לָהֶ֔ם וְיָרְד֥וּ חַיִּ֖ים שְׁאֹ֑לָה וִֽידַעְתֶּ֕ם כִּ֧י נִֽאֲצ֛וּ הָאֲנָשִׁ֥ים הָאֵ֖לֶּה אֶת־יְהוָֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehiy֙ kּekalּot֔o ledabּe֕r 'e֥t kּal-hadּebari֖ym ha'e֑lּeh vatּibּaqa֥ ha'adama֖h 'ashshe֥r tּachetּeyheֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)As soon as he finished saying all this, the ground under them split apart

וַיְהִי֙ כְּכַלֹּת֔וֹ לְדַבֵּ֕ר אֵ֥ת כָּל־הַדְּבָרִ֖ים הָאֵ֑לֶּה וַתִּבָּקַ֥ע הָאֲדָמָ֖ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר תַּחְתֵּיהֶֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּipetּa֤ch ha'a֨retz֙ 'et-pּi֔yha vatּibela֥ 'ota֖m ve'et-bּatּeyhe֑m ve'e֤t kּal-ha'adam֙ 'ashshe֣r leqo֔rach ve'e֖t kּal-harakֽushsh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them and their households, and all those associated with Korah, together with their possessions.

וַתִּפְתַּ֤ח הָאָ֨רֶץ֙ אֶת־פִּ֔יהָ וַתִּבְלַ֥ע אֹתָ֖ם וְאֶת־בָּתֵּיהֶ֑ם וְאֵ֤ת כָּל־הָאָדָם֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר לְקֹ֔רַח וְאֵ֖ת כָּל־הָרֲכֽוּשׁ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּe֨red֜u he֣m vekal-'ashshe֥r lahe֛m chayּi֖ym shshe'o֑lah vatּeka֤s 'aleyhem֙ ha'a֔retz vayּo'bed֖u mitּ֥oke haqּahaֽl׃

Edified Edition (EDE)They went down alive into the realm of the dead, with everything they owned; the earth closed over them, and they perished and were gone from the community.

וַיֵּ֨רְד֜וּ הֵ֣ם וְכָל־אֲשֶׁ֥ר לָהֶ֛ם חַיִּ֖ים שְׁאֹ֑לָה וַתְּכַ֤ס עֲלֵיהֶם֙ הָאָ֔רֶץ וַיֹּאבְד֖וּ מִתּ֥וֹךְ הַקָּהָֽל׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vekal-yishsera'e֗l 'ashshe֛r sebiyboteyhe֖m na֣su leqola֑m kּi֣y 'aֽmer֔u pּen-tּibela'e֖nu ha'aֽretz׃

Edified Edition (EDE)At their cries, all the Israelites around them fled, shouting, "The earth is going to swallow us too!"

וְכָל־יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל אֲשֶׁ֛ר סְבִיבֹתֵיהֶ֖ם נָ֣סוּ לְקֹלָ֑ם כִּ֣י אָֽמְר֔וּ פֶּן־תִּבְלָעֵ֖נוּ הָאָֽרֶץ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'e֥shsh yatze'a֖h me'e֣t yehva֑h vatּo֗'kal 'e֣t hachamishshּi֤ym uma'ta֨yim֙ 'i֔yshsh maqeriybe֖y haqּetoֽret׃p

Edified Edition (EDE)And fire came out from the LORD and consumed the 250 men who were offering the incense.

וְאֵ֥שׁ יָצְאָ֖ה מֵאֵ֣ת יְהוָ֑ה וַתֹּ֗אכַל אֵ֣ת הַחֲמִשִּׁ֤ים וּמָאתַ֨יִם֙ אִ֔ישׁ מַקְרִיבֵ֖י הַקְּטֹֽרֶת׃פ
