Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּabo֣'u beneֽy-yi֠shsera'el kּal-ha֨'eda֤h midebּar-tzin֙ bּacho֣deshsh haֽri'shsh֔on vayּe֥shsheb ha'a֖m bּeqade֑shsh vatּa֤mat shsham֙ mireya֔m vatּiqּabe֖r shshaֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)In the first month, the entire Israelite community arrived at the Desert of Zin and stayed at Kadesh. There Miriam died and was buried.

וַיָּבֹ֣אוּ בְנֵֽי־יִ֠שְׂרָאֵל כָּל־הָ֨עֵדָ֤ה מִדְבַּר־צִן֙ בַּחֹ֣דֶשׁ הָֽרִאשׁ֔וֹן וַיֵּ֥שֶׁב הָעָ֖ם בְּקָדֵ֑שׁ וַתָּ֤מָת שָׁם֙ מִרְיָ֔ם וַתִּקָּבֵ֖ר שָֽׁם׃

2
Phonetic (Hebrew): velo'-ha֥yah ma֖yim la'eda֑h vayּiqּa֣hal֔u 'al-moshshe֖h ve'aֽl-'aharoֽn׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Now there was no water for the community, and the people gathered in opposition to Moses and Aaron.

וְלֹא־הָ֥יָה מַ֖יִם לָעֵדָ֑ה וַיִּקָּ֣הֲל֔וּ עַל־מֹשֶׁ֖ה וְעַֽל־אַהֲרֹֽן׃

3
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֥reb ha'a֖m 'im-moshshe֑h vayּo'mer֣u le'mo֔r vel֥u gava֛'enu bּigeva֥ 'ache֖ynu lipene֥y yehvaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)They quarrelled with Moses and said, "If only we had died when our brothers fell dead before the LORD!"

וַיָּ֥רֶב הָעָ֖ם עִם־מֹשֶׁ֑ה וַיֹּאמְר֣וּ לֵאמֹ֔ר וְל֥וּ גָוַ֛עְנוּ בִּגְוַ֥ע אַחֵ֖ינוּ לִפְנֵ֥י יְהוָֽה׃

4
Phonetic (Hebrew): velama֤h habe'tem֙ 'et-qeha֣l yehva֔h 'el-hamּidebּa֖r hazּe֑h lam֣ut shsha֔m 'ana֖chenu ube'iyreֽnu׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Why did you bring the LORD’s community into this wilderness, that we and our livestock should die here?

וְלָמָ֤ה הֲבֵאתֶם֙ אֶת־קְהַ֣ל יְהוָ֔ה אֶל־הַמִּדְבָּ֖ר הַזֶּ֑ה לָמ֣וּת שָׁ֔ם אֲנַ֖חְנוּ וּבְעִירֵֽנוּ׃

5
Phonetic (Hebrew): velama֤h heֽ'eliytu֨nu֙ mimּitzera֔yim lehabi֣y 'ota֔nu 'el-hamּaq֥om hara֖ hazּe֑h lo֣ ׀ meq֣om ze֗ra ute'ena֤h vege֨pen֙ verimּ֔on uma֥yim 'a֖yin lishshetּֽot׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Why did you make us come up out of Egypt to this terrible place? It has no grain or figs, grapevines or pomegranates. And there is no water to drink!"

וְלָמָ֤ה הֶֽעֱלִיתֻ֨נוּ֙ מִמִּצְרַ֔יִם לְהָבִ֣יא אֹתָ֔נוּ אֶל־הַמָּק֥וֹם הָרָ֖ע הַזֶּ֑ה לֹ֣א ׀ מְק֣וֹם זֶ֗רַע וּתְאֵנָ֤ה וְגֶ֨פֶן֙ וְרִמּ֔וֹן וּמַ֥יִם אַ֖יִן לִשְׁתּֽוֹת׃

6
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּabo'֩ moshshe֨h ve'aharo֜n mipּene֣y haqּaha֗l 'el-pּe֨tach֙ 'o֣hel mo'e֔d vaֽyּipּel֖u 'al-pּeneyhe֑m vayּera֥ kebod-yehva֖h 'aleyheֽm׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)Moses and Aaron went from the assembly to the entrance to the Tent of Meeting and fell facedown, and the glory of the LORD appeared to them.

וַיָּבֹא֩ מֹשֶׁ֨ה וְאַהֲרֹ֜ן מִפְּנֵ֣י הַקָּהָ֗ל אֶל־פֶּ֨תַח֙ אֹ֣הֶל מוֹעֵ֔ד וַֽיִּפְּל֖וּ עַל־פְּנֵיהֶ֑ם וַיֵּרָ֥א כְבוֹד־יְהוָ֖ה אֲלֵיהֶֽם׃פ

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayedabּe֥r yehva֖h 'el-moshshe֥h lּe'moֽr׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The LORD said to Moses,

וַיְדַבֵּ֥ר יְהוָ֖ה אֶל־מֹשֶׁ֥ה לֵּאמֹֽר׃

8
Phonetic (Hebrew): qa֣ch 'et-hamּatּe֗h vehaqehe֤l 'et-ha'edah֙ 'atּah֙ ve'aharo֣n 'achi֔yka vedibּaretּe֧m 'el-hasּe֛la le'eyneyhe֖m venata֣n meyma֑yv vehotze'ta֨ lahe֥m ma֨yim֙ min-hasּe֔la vehishsheqiyta֥ 'et-ha'eda֖h ve'et-bּe'iyraֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"Take the staff, and you and your brother Aaron gather the assembly together. Speak to that rock before their eyes and it will pour out its water. You will bring water out of the rock for the community so they and their livestock can drink."

קַ֣ח אֶת־הַמַּטֶּ֗ה וְהַקְהֵ֤ל אֶת־הָעֵדָה֙ אַתָּה֙ וְאַהֲרֹ֣ן אָחִ֔יךָ וְדִבַּרְתֶּ֧ם אֶל־הַסֶּ֛לַע לְעֵינֵיהֶ֖ם וְנָתַ֣ן מֵימָ֑יו וְהוֹצֵאתָ֨ לָהֶ֥ם מַ֨יִם֙ מִן־הַסֶּ֔לַע וְהִשְׁקִיתָ֥ אֶת־הָעֵדָ֖ה וְאֶת־בְּעִירָֽם׃

9
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiqּa֥ch moshshe֛h 'et-hamּatּe֖h milּipene֣y yehva֑h kּa'ashshe֖r tziuaֽhu׃
Edified Edition (EDE)So Moses took the staff from the LORD’s presence, just as he commanded him.

וַיִּקַּ֥ח מֹשֶׁ֛ה אֶת־הַמַּטֶּ֖ה מִלִּפְנֵ֣י יְהוָ֑ה כַּאֲשֶׁ֖ר צִוָּֽהוּ׃

10
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּaqehi֜lu moshshe֧h ve'aharo֛n 'et-haqּaha֖l 'el-pּene֣y hasּa֑la vayּo֣'mer lahe֗m shshime'u-na'֙ hamּori֔ym hamin-hasּe֣la hazּe֔h notzi֥y lake֖m maֽyim׃
Edified Edition (EDE)He and Aaron gathered the assembly together in front of the rock and Moses said to them, "Listen, you rebels, must we bring you water out of this rock?"

וַיַּקְהִ֜לוּ מֹשֶׁ֧ה וְאַהֲרֹ֛ן אֶת־הַקָּהָ֖ל אֶל־פְּנֵ֣י הַסָּ֑לַע וַיֹּ֣אמֶר לָהֶ֗ם שִׁמְעוּ־נָא֙ הַמֹּרִ֔ים הֲמִן־הַסֶּ֣לַע הַזֶּ֔ה נוֹצִ֥יא לָכֶ֖ם מָֽיִם׃

11
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֨rem moshshe֜h 'et-yad֗o vayּa֧ke 'et-hasּe֛la bּematּe֖hu pּa'ama֑yim vayּetze'u֙ ma֣yim rabּi֔ym vatּe֥shshetּe ha'eda֖h ube'iyraֽm׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)Then Moses raised his arm and struck the rock twice with his staff. Water gushed out, and the community and their livestock drank.

וַיָּ֨רֶם מֹשֶׁ֜ה אֶת־יָד֗וֹ וַיַּ֧ךְ אֶת־הַסֶּ֛לַע בְּמַטֵּ֖הוּ פַּעֲמָ֑יִם וַיֵּצְאוּ֙ מַ֣יִם רַבִּ֔ים וַתֵּ֥שְׁתְּ הָעֵדָ֖ה וּבְעִירָֽם׃ס

12
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֣'mer yehvah֮ 'el-moshshe֣h ve'eֽl-'aharon֒ ya֚'an lo'-he'emanetּe֣m bּi֔y leha֨qedּiyshshe֔niy le'eyne֖y bּene֣y yishsera'e֑l lake֗n lo֤ tabi֨y'u֙ 'et-haqּaha֣l hazּe֔h 'el-ha'a֖retz 'ashsher-nata֥tּiy laheֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)But the LORD said to Moses and Aaron, "Because you did not trust in me enough to honour me as holy in the sight of the Israelites, you will not bring this community into the land I give them."

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר יְהוָה֮ אֶל־מֹשֶׁ֣ה וְאֶֽל־אַהֲרֹן֒ יַ֚עַן לֹא־הֶאֱמַנְתֶּ֣ם בִּ֔י לְהַ֨קְדִּישֵׁ֔נִי לְעֵינֵ֖י בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל לָכֵ֗ן לֹ֤א תָבִ֨יאוּ֙ אֶת־הַקָּהָ֣ל הַזֶּ֔ה אֶל־הָאָ֖רֶץ אֲשֶׁר־נָתַ֥תִּי לָהֶֽם׃

13
Phonetic (Hebrew): he֚mּah me֣y meriyba֔h 'ashsher-rab֥u beneֽy-yishsera'e֖l 'et-yehva֑h vayּiqּade֖shsh bּaֽm׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)These were the waters of Meribah, where the Israelites quarrelled with the LORD and where he was proved holy among them.

הֵ֚מָּה מֵ֣י מְרִיבָ֔ה אֲשֶׁר־רָב֥וּ בְנֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל אֶת־יְהוָ֑ה וַיִּקָּדֵ֖שׁ בָּֽם׃ס

14
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּishshela֨ch moshshe֧h male'aki֛ym miqּade֖shsh 'el-me֣leke 'ed֑om kּo֤h 'amar֙ 'achi֣yka yishsera'e֔l 'atּa֣h yada֔'etּa 'e֥t kּal-hatּela'a֖h 'ashshe֥r metza'aֽtenu׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Moses sent messengers from Kadesh to the king of Edom, saying: "This is what your brother Israel says: You know about all the hardships that have come upon us.

וַיִּשְׁלַ֨ח מֹשֶׁ֧ה מַלְאָכִ֛ים מִקָּדֵ֖שׁ אֶל־מֶ֣לֶךְ אֱד֑וֹם כֹּ֤ה אָמַר֙ אָחִ֣יךָ יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל אַתָּ֣ה יָדַ֔עְתָּ אֵ֥ת כָּל־הַתְּלָאָ֖ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר מְצָאָֽתְנוּ׃

15
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּered֤u 'abote֨ynu֙ mitzera֔yemah vanּe֥shsheb bּemitzera֖yim yami֣ym rabּi֑ym vayּare֥'u la֛nu mitzera֖yim vela'aboteֽynu׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Our ancestors went down into Egypt, and we lived there many years. The Egyptians mistreated us and our ancestors,

וַיֵּרְד֤וּ אֲבֹתֵ֨ינוּ֙ מִצְרַ֔יְמָה וַנֵּ֥שֶׁב בְּמִצְרַ֖יִם יָמִ֣ים רַבִּ֑ים וַיָּרֵ֥עוּ לָ֛נוּ מִצְרַ֖יִם וְלַאֲבֹתֵֽינוּ׃

16
Phonetic (Hebrew): vanּitze'a֤q 'el-yehvah֙ vayּishshema֣ qole֔nu vayּishshela֣ch male'a֔ke vayּotzi'e֖nu mimּitzera֑yim vehinּeh֙ 'ana֣chenu beqade֔shsh 'i֖yr qetze֥h gebuleֽka׃
Edified Edition (EDE)but when we cried out to the LORD, he heard our voice and sent an angel and brought us out of Egypt. Now we are here at Kadesh, a town on the edge of your territory.

וַנִּצְעַ֤ק אֶל־יְהוָה֙ וַיִּשְׁמַ֣ע קֹלֵ֔נוּ וַיִּשְׁלַ֣ח מַלְאָ֔ךְ וַיֹּצִאֵ֖נוּ מִמִּצְרָ֑יִם וְהִנֵּה֙ אֲנַ֣חְנוּ בְקָדֵ֔שׁ עִ֖יר קְצֵ֥ה גְבוּלֶֽךָ׃

17
Phonetic (Hebrew): na'ebּerah-nּa֣ be'aretze֗ka lo֤ na'abor֙ bּeshsade֣h ubeke֔rem velo֥ nishshetּe֖h me֣y be'e֑r dּe֧reke hamּe֣leke nele֗ke lo֤ nitּeh֙ yami֣yn ushsemo֔'vl 'a֥d 'ashsheֽr-na'abo֖r gּebuleֽka׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Please let us pass through your country. We will not go through any field or vineyard, or drink water from any well. We will keep to the King’s Highway and not turn to the right or to the left until we have passed through your territory."

נַעְבְּרָה־נָּ֣א בְאַרְצֶ֗ךָ לֹ֤א נַעֲבֹר֙ בְּשָׂדֶ֣ה וּבְכֶ֔רֶם וְלֹ֥א נִשְׁתֶּ֖ה מֵ֣י בְאֵ֑ר דֶּ֧רֶךְ הַמֶּ֣לֶךְ נֵלֵ֗ךְ לֹ֤א נִטֶּה֙ יָמִ֣ין וּשְׂמֹ֔אול עַ֥ד אֲשֶֽׁר־נַעֲבֹ֖ר גְּבוּלֶֽךָ׃

18
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֤'mer 'elayv֙ 'ed֔om lo֥ ta'abo֖r bּi֑y pּen-bּache֖reb 'etze֥ liqera'teֽka׃
Edified Edition (EDE)But Edom answered: "You may not pass through here; if you try, we will march out and attack you with the sword."

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֵלָיו֙ אֱד֔וֹם לֹ֥א תַעֲבֹ֖ר בִּ֑י פֶּן־בַּחֶ֖רֶב אֵצֵ֥א לִקְרָאתֶֽךָ׃

19
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo'mer֨u 'ela֥yv bּeneֽy-yishsera'e֘l bּaֽmesilּa֣h na'aleh֒ ve'im-meyme֤yka nishshetּeh֙ 'ani֣y umiqena֔y venatatּi֖y mikera֑m ra֥q 'eyn-dּaba֖r bּeragela֥y 'eֽ'eboֽrah׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The Israelites replied: "We will stay on the main road; if we or our livestock drink any of your water, we will pay for it. We only want to pass through on foot, nothing else."

וַיֹּאמְר֨וּ אֵלָ֥יו בְּנֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵ֘ל בַּֽמְסִלָּ֣ה נַעֲלֶה֒ וְאִם־מֵימֶ֤יךָ נִשְׁתֶּה֙ אֲנִ֣י וּמִקְנַ֔י וְנָתַתִּ֖י מִכְרָ֑ם רַ֥ק אֵין־דָּבָ֖ר בְּרַגְלַ֥י אֶֽעֱבֹֽרָה׃

20
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֖'mer lo֣ ta'abo֑r vayּetze֤ 'edom֙ liqera't֔o bּe'a֥m kּabe֖d ubeya֥d chazaqaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Again they answered: "You may not pass through." Then Edom came out against them with a large and powerful army.

וַיֹּ֖אמֶר לֹ֣א תַעֲבֹ֑ר וַיֵּצֵ֤א אֱדוֹם֙ לִקְרָאת֔וֹ בְּעַ֥ם כָּבֵ֖ד וּבְיָ֥ד חֲזָקָֽה׃

21
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayema'e֣n ׀ 'ed֗om neton֙ 'et-yishsera'e֔l 'abo֖r bּigebul֑o vayּe֥t yishsera'e֖l me'alaֽyv׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)Since Edom refused to let them go through their territory, Israel turned away from them.

וַיְמָאֵ֣ן ׀ אֱד֗וֹם נְתֹן֙ אֶת־יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל עֲבֹ֖ר בִּגְבֻל֑וֹ וַיֵּ֥ט יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל מֵעָלָֽיו׃פ

22
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּise'֖u miqּade֑shsh vayּabo֧'u beneֽy-yishsera'e֛l kּal-ha'eda֖h ho֥r hahaֽr׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The whole Israelite community set out from Kadesh and came to Mount Hor.

וַיִּסְע֖וּ מִקָּדֵ֑שׁ וַיָּבֹ֧אוּ בְנֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל כָּל־הָעֵדָ֖ה הֹ֥ר הָהָֽר׃

23
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֧'mer yehva֛h 'el-moshshe֥h ve'eֽl-'aharo֖n bּeho֣r haha֑r 'al-gּeb֥ul 'eֽretz-'ed֖om le'moֽr׃
Edified Edition (EDE)At Mount Hor, near the border of Edom, the LORD said to Moses and Aaron,

וַיֹּ֧אמֶר יְהוָ֛ה אֶל־מֹשֶׁ֥ה וְאֶֽל־אַהֲרֹ֖ן בְּהֹ֣ר הָהָ֑ר עַל־גְּב֥וּל אֶֽרֶץ־אֱד֖וֹם לֵאמֹֽר׃

24
Phonetic (Hebrew): ye'ase֤p 'aharon֙ 'el-'amּa֔yv kּi֣y lo֤ yabo'֙ 'el-ha'a֔retz 'ashshe֥r nata֖tּiy libene֣y yishsera'e֑l 'a֛l 'ashsher-meriyte֥m 'et-pּi֖y leme֥y meriybaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"Aaron will be gathered to his people. He will not enter the land I give the Israelites, because both of you rebelled against my command at the waters of Meribah.

יֵאָסֵ֤ף אַהֲרֹן֙ אֶל־עַמָּ֔יו כִּ֣י לֹ֤א יָבֹא֙ אֶל־הָאָ֔רֶץ אֲשֶׁ֥ר נָתַ֖תִּי לִבְנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל עַ֛ל אֲשֶׁר־מְרִיתֶ֥ם אֶת־פִּ֖י לְמֵ֥י מְרִיבָֽה׃

25
Phonetic (Hebrew): qa֚ch 'eֽt-'aharo֔n ve'et-'ele'aza֖r bּen֑o veha֥'al 'ota֖m ho֥r hahaֽr׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Get Aaron and his son Eleazar and take them up Mount Hor.

קַ֚ח אֶֽת־אַהֲרֹ֔ן וְאֶת־אֶלְעָזָ֖ר בְּנ֑וֹ וְהַ֥עַל אֹתָ֖ם הֹ֥ר הָהָֽר׃

26
Phonetic (Hebrew): vehapeshshe֤t 'eֽt-'aharon֙ 'et-bּegada֔yv vehilebּashshetּa֖m 'et-'ele'aza֣r bּen֑o ve'aharo֥n ye'ase֖p ume֥t shshaֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Remove Aaron’s garments and put them on his son Eleazar, for Aaron will be gathered to his people; he will die there."

וְהַפְשֵׁ֤ט אֶֽת־אַהֲרֹן֙ אֶת־בְּגָדָ֔יו וְהִלְבַּשְׁתָּ֖ם אֶת־אֶלְעָזָ֣ר בְּנ֑וֹ וְאַהֲרֹ֥ן יֵאָסֵ֖ף וּמֵ֥ת שָֽׁם׃

27
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֣'ashs moshshe֔h kּa'ashshe֖r tziua֣h yehva֑h vֽayּa'alu֙ 'el-ho֣r haha֔r le'eyne֖y kּal-ha'edaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Moses did as the LORD commanded: They went up Mount Hor in the sight of the whole community.

וַיַּ֣עַשׂ מֹשֶׁ֔ה כַּאֲשֶׁ֖ר צִוָּ֣ה יְהוָ֑ה וַֽיַּעֲלוּ֙ אֶל־הֹ֣ר הָהָ֔ר לְעֵינֵ֖י כָּל־הָעֵדָֽה׃

28
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּapeshshet֩ moshshe֨h 'eֽt-'aharo֜n 'et-bּegada֗yv vayּalebּe֤shsh 'otam֙ 'et-'ele'aza֣r bּen֔o vayּa֧mat 'aharo֛n shsha֖m bּero֣'shsh haha֑r vayּe֧red moshshe֛h ve'ele'aza֖r min-hahaֽr׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Moses removed Aaron’s garments and put them on his son Eleazar. And Aaron died there on top of the mountain. Then Moses and Eleazar came down from the mountain,

וַיַּפְשֵׁט֩ מֹשֶׁ֨ה אֶֽת־אַהֲרֹ֜ן אֶת־בְּגָדָ֗יו וַיַּלְבֵּ֤שׁ אֹתָם֙ אֶת־אֶלְעָזָ֣ר בְּנ֔וֹ וַיָּ֧מָת אַהֲרֹ֛ן שָׁ֖ם בְּרֹ֣אשׁ הָהָ֑ר וַיֵּ֧רֶד מֹשֶׁ֛ה וְאֶלְעָזָ֖ר מִן־הָהָֽר׃

29
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּire'u֙ kּal-ha֣'eda֔h kּi֥y gava֖ 'aharo֑n vayּibekּ֤u 'eֽt-'aharon֙ shsheloshshi֣ym y֔om kּo֖l bּe֥yt yishsera'eֽl׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)and when the whole community learned that Aaron had died, all Israel mourned for him for thirty days.

וַיִּרְאוּ֙ כָּל־הָ֣עֵדָ֔ה כִּ֥י גָוַ֖ע אַהֲרֹ֑ן וַיִּבְכּ֤וּ אֶֽת־אַהֲרֹן֙ שְׁלֹשִׁ֣ים י֔וֹם כֹּ֖ל בֵּ֥ית יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ס
