Chapter 25

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּe֥shsheb yishsera'e֖l bּashshּitּi֑ym vayּa֣chel ha'a֔m lizen֖ot 'el-bּen֥ot mo'aֽb׃

Edified Edition (EDE)While Israel was staying in Shittim, the men began to indulge in sexual immorality with Moabite women,

וַיֵּ֥שֶׁב יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל בַּשִּׁטִּ֑ים וַיָּ֣חֶל הָעָ֔ם לִזְנ֖וֹת אֶל־בְּנ֥וֹת מוֹאָֽב׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּiqere֣'na la'a֔m lezibeche֖y 'eloheyhe֑n vayּo֣'kal ha'a֔m vayּiֽshshetּachau֖u leֽ'loheyheֽn׃

Edified Edition (EDE)who invited them to the sacrifices to their gods. The people ate the sacrificial meal and bowed down before these gods.

וַתִּקְרֶ֣אןָ לָעָ֔ם לְזִבְחֵ֖י אֱלֹהֵיהֶ֑ן וַיֹּ֣אכַל הָעָ֔ם וַיִּֽשְׁתַּחֲוּ֖וּ לֵֽאלֹהֵיהֶֽן׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּitzּa֥med yishsera'e֖l leba֣'al pּe'֑or vayּiֽchar-'a֥p yehva֖h bּeyishsera'eֽl׃

Edified Edition (EDE)So Israel yoked themselves to the Baal of Peor. And the LORD’s anger burned against them.

וַיִּצָּ֥מֶד יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל לְבַ֣עַל פְּע֑וֹר וַיִּֽחַר־אַ֥ף יְהוָ֖ה בְּיִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֨'mer yehva֜h 'el-moshshe֗h qa֚ch 'et-kּal-ra'shshe֣y ha'a֔m vehoqa֥ 'ota֛m layhva֖h ne֣ged hashshּa֑meshsh veyashsho֛b char֥on 'ap-yehva֖h miyּishsera'eֽl׃

Edified Edition (EDE)The LORD said to Moses, "Take all the leaders of these people, kill them and expose them in broad daylight before the LORD, so that the LORD’s fierce anger may turn away from Israel."

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר יְהוָ֜ה אֶל־מֹשֶׁ֗ה קַ֚ח אֶת־כָּל־רָאשֵׁ֣י הָעָ֔ם וְהוֹקַ֥ע אוֹתָ֛ם לַיהוָ֖ה נֶ֣גֶד הַשָּׁ֑מֶשׁ וְיָשֹׁ֛ב חֲר֥וֹן אַף־יְהוָ֖ה מִיִּשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֣'mer moshshe֔h 'el-shshopete֖y yishsera'e֑l hiregu֙ 'i֣yshsh 'anashsha֔yv hanּitzemadi֖ym leba֥'al pּe'ֽor׃

Edified Edition (EDE)So Moses said to Israel’s judges, "Each of you must put to death those of your people who have yoked themselves to the Baal of Peor."

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר מֹשֶׁ֔ה אֶל־שֹׁפְטֵ֖י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל הִרְגוּ֙ אִ֣ישׁ אֲנָשָׁ֔יו הַנִּצְמָדִ֖ים לְבַ֥עַל פְּעֽוֹר׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vehinּe֡h 'iyshsh֩ mibּene֨y yishsera'e֜l bּa֗ vayּaqere֤b 'el-'echayv֙ 'et-hamּideyani֔yt le'eyne֣y moshshe֔h ule'eyne֖y kּal-'ada֣t bּeney-yishsera'e֑l vehe֣mּah boki֔ym pּe֖tach 'o֥hel mo'eֽd׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Then an Israelite man brought into the camp a Midianite woman right before the eyes of Moses and the whole assembly of Israel while they were weeping at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting.

וְהִנֵּ֡ה אִישׁ֩ מִבְּנֵ֨י יִשְׂרָאֵ֜ל בָּ֗א וַיַּקְרֵ֤ב אֶל־אֶחָיו֙ אֶת־הַמִּדְיָנִ֔ית לְעֵינֵ֣י מֹשֶׁ֔ה וּלְעֵינֵ֖י כָּל־עֲדַ֣ת בְּנֵי־יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וְהֵ֣מָּה בֹכִ֔ים פֶּ֖תַח אֹ֥הֶל מוֹעֵֽד׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֗re pּiֽynechas֙ bּen-'ele'aza֔r bּeֽn-'aharo֖n hakּohe֑n vayּa֨qam֙ mitּ֣oke haֽ'eda֔h vayּiqּa֥ch ro֖mach bּeyadֽo׃

Edified Edition (EDE)When Phinehas son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, the priest, saw this, he left the assembly, took a spear in his hand

וַיַּ֗רְא פִּֽינְחָס֙ בֶּן־אֶלְעָזָ֔ר בֶּֽן־אַהֲרֹ֖ן הַכֹּהֵ֑ן וַיָּ֨קָם֙ מִתּ֣וֹךְ הָֽעֵדָ֔ה וַיִּקַּ֥ח רֹ֖מַח בְּיָדֽוֹ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): va֠yּabo 'acha֨r 'iֽyshsh-yishsera'e֜l 'el-haqּubּa֗h vayּideqor֙ 'et-shsheneyhe֔m 'e֚t 'i֣yshsh yishsera'e֔l ve'et-ha'ishshּa֖h 'el-qobata֑hּ vatּeֽ'atzar֙ hamּagּepa֔h me'a֖l bּene֥y yishsera'eֽl׃

Edified Edition (EDE)and followed the Israelite into the tent. He drove the spear through both of them, through the Israelite man and into the woman’s body. Then the plague against the Israelites was stopped;

וַ֠יָּבֹא אַחַ֨ר אִֽישׁ־יִשְׂרָאֵ֜ל אֶל־הַקֻּבָּ֗ה וַיִּדְקֹר֙ אֶת־שְׁנֵיהֶ֔ם אֵ֚ת אִ֣ישׁ יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל וְאֶת־הָאִשָּׁ֖ה אֶל־קֳבָתָ֑הּ וַתֵּֽעָצַר֙ הַמַּגֵּפָ֔ה מֵעַ֖ל בְּנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּihey֕u hamּeti֖ym bּamּagּepa֑h 'arebּa'a֥h ve'eshseri֖ym 'aֽlep׃p

Edified Edition (EDE)but those who died in the plague numbered 24,000.

וַיִּהְי֕וּ הַמֵּתִ֖ים בַּמַּגֵּפָ֑ה אַרְבָּעָ֥ה וְעֶשְׂרִ֖ים אָֽלֶף׃פ

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayedabּe֥r yehva֖h 'el-moshshe֥h lּe'moֽr׃

Edified Edition (EDE)The LORD said to Moses,

וַיְדַבֵּ֥ר יְהוָ֖ה אֶל־מֹשֶׁ֥ה לֵּאמֹֽר׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): pּiֽynecha֨s bּen-'ele'aza֜r bּen-'aharo֣n hakּohe֗n heshshi֤yb 'et-chamatiy֙ me'a֣l bּeneֽy-yishsera'e֔l bּeqane'֥o 'et-qine'ati֖y bּetoka֑m velo'-kilּi֥ytiy 'et-bּeneֽy-yishsera'e֖l bּeqine'atiֽy׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"Phinehas son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, the priest, has turned my anger away from the Israelites. Since he was as zealous for my honour among them as I am, I did not put an end to them in my zeal.

פִּֽינְחָ֨ס בֶּן־אֶלְעָזָ֜ר בֶּן־אַהֲרֹ֣ן הַכֹּהֵ֗ן הֵשִׁ֤יב אֶת־חֲמָתִי֙ מֵעַ֣ל בְּנֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל בְּקַנְא֥וֹ אֶת־קִנְאָתִ֖י בְּתוֹכָ֑ם וְלֹא־כִלִּ֥יתִי אֶת־בְּנֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל בְּקִנְאָתִֽי׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): lake֖n 'emo֑r hineni֨y note֥n l֛o 'et-bּeriyti֖y shshalֽom׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Therefore tell him I am making my covenant of peace with him.

לָכֵ֖ן אֱמֹ֑ר הִנְנִ֨י נֹתֵ֥ן ל֛וֹ אֶת־בְּרִיתִ֖י שָׁלֽוֹם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): veha֤yetah lּo֙ ulezare'֣o 'achara֔yv bּeri֖yt kּehunּa֣t 'ola֑m tּa֗chat 'ashshe֤r qinּe'֙ leֽ'loha֔yv vayekapּe֖r 'al-bּene֥y yishsera'eֽl׃

Edified Edition (EDE)He and his descendants will have a covenant of a lasting priesthood, because he was zealous for the honour of his God and made atonement for the Israelites."

וְהָ֤יְתָה לּוֹ֙ וּלְזַרְע֣וֹ אַחֲרָ֔יו בְּרִ֖ית כְּהֻנַּ֣ת עוֹלָ֑ם תַּ֗חַת אֲשֶׁ֤ר קִנֵּא֙ לֵֽאלֹהָ֔יו וַיְכַפֵּ֖ר עַל־בְּנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): veshshem֩ 'i֨yshsh yishsera'e֜l hamּukּe֗h 'ashshe֤r hukּah֙ 'et-hamּideyani֔yt zimeri֖y bּen-sal֑u neshsi֥y beֽyt-'a֖b lashshּime'oniֽy׃

Edified Edition (EDE)The name of the Israelite who was killed with the Midianite woman was Zimri son of Salu, the leader of a Simeonite family.

וְשֵׁם֩ אִ֨ישׁ יִשְׂרָאֵ֜ל הַמֻּכֶּ֗ה אֲשֶׁ֤ר הֻכָּה֙ אֶת־הַמִּדְיָנִ֔ית זִמְרִ֖י בֶּן־סָל֑וּא נְשִׂ֥יא בֵֽית־אָ֖ב לַשִּׁמְעֹנִֽי׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): veshshe֨m haֽ'ishshּa֧h hamּukּa֛h hamּideyani֖yt kּazebּi֣y bat-tz֑ur ro֣'shsh 'umּ֥ot bּeֽyt-'a֛b bּemideya֖n hֽu'׃p

Edified Edition (EDE)And the name of the Midianite woman who was put to death was Kozbi daughter of Zur, a tribal chief of a Midianite family.

וְשֵׁ֨ם הָֽאִשָּׁ֧ה הַמֻּכָּ֛ה הַמִּדְיָנִ֖ית כָּזְבִּ֣י בַת־צ֑וּר רֹ֣אשׁ אֻמּ֥וֹת בֵּֽית־אָ֛ב בְּמִדְיָ֖ן הֽוּא׃פ

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayedabּe֥r yehva֖h 'el-moshshe֥h lּe'moֽr׃

Edified Edition (EDE)The LORD said to Moses,

וַיְדַבֵּ֥ר יְהוָ֖ה אֶל־מֹשֶׁ֥ה לֵּאמֹֽר׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): tzar֖or 'et-hamּideyani֑ym vehikּiyte֖m 'otaֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"Treat the Midianites as enemies and kill them.

צָר֖וֹר אֶת־הַמִּדְיָנִ֑ים וְהִכִּיתֶ֖ם אוֹתָֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): kּi֣y tzoreri֥ym hem֙ lake֔m bּenikeleyhe֛m 'ashsher-nikּel֥u lake֖m 'al-dּebar-pּe'֑or ve'al-dּeba֞r kּazebּi֨y bat-neshsi֤y mideyan֙ 'achota֔m hamּukּa֥h beyom-hamּagּepa֖h 'al-dּebar-pּe'ֽor׃

Edified Edition (EDE)They treated you as enemies when they deceived you in the Peor incident involving their sister Kozbi, the daughter of a Midianite leader, the woman who was killed when the plague came as a result of the Peor incident."

כִּ֣י צֹרְרִ֥ים הֵם֙ לָכֶ֔ם בְּנִכְלֵיהֶ֛ם אֲשֶׁר־נִכְּל֥וּ לָכֶ֖ם עַל־דְּבַר־פְּע֑וֹר וְעַל־דְּבַ֞ר כָּזְבִּ֨י בַת־נְשִׂ֤יא מִדְיָן֙ אֲחֹתָ֔ם הַמֻּכָּ֥ה בְיוֹם־הַמַּגֵּפָ֖ה עַל־דְּבַר־פְּעֽוֹר׃

וַיְהִ֖י אַחֲרֵ֣י הַמַּגֵּפָ֑ה פ
