Chapter 27

Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּiqera֜benah bּen֣ot tzelapecha֗d bּen-che֤per bּen-gּile'ad֙ bּen-maki֣yr bּen-menashshּe֔h lemishshepּecho֖t menashshּe֣h ben-yose֑p ve'e֨lּeh֙ shshem֣ot bּenota֔yv machela֣h no'a֔h vechagela֥h umilekּa֖h vetiretzaֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)The daughters of Zelophehad son of Hepher, the son of Gilead, the son of Makir, the son of Manasseh, belonged to the clans of Manasseh son of Joseph. Their names were Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milkah and Tirzah. They approached

וַתִּקְרַ֜בְנָה בְּנ֣וֹת צְלָפְחָ֗ד בֶּן־חֵ֤פֶר בֶּן־גִּלְעָד֙ בֶּן־מָכִ֣יר בֶּן־מְנַשֶּׁ֔ה לְמִשְׁפְּחֹ֖ת מְנַשֶּׁ֣ה בֶן־יוֹסֵ֑ף וְאֵ֨לֶּה֙ שְׁמ֣וֹת בְּנֹתָ֔יו מַחְלָ֣ה נֹעָ֔ה וְחָגְלָ֥ה וּמִלְכָּ֖ה וְתִרְצָֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vaֽtּa'amo֜denah lipene֣y moshshe֗h velipeney֙ 'ele'aza֣r hakּohe֔n velipene֥y hanּeshsiy'i֖m vekal-ha'eda֑h pּe֥tach 'oֽhel-mo'e֖d le'moֽr׃

Edified Edition (EDE)the entrance to the Tent of Meeting and stood before Moses, Eleazar the priest, the leaders and the whole assembly, and said,

וַֽתַּעֲמֹ֜דְנָה לִפְנֵ֣י מֹשֶׁ֗ה וְלִפְנֵי֙ אֶלְעָזָ֣ר הַכֹּהֵ֔ן וְלִפְנֵ֥י הַנְּשִׂיאִ֖ם וְכָל־הָעֵדָ֑ה פֶּ֥תַח אֹֽהֶל־מוֹעֵ֖ד לֵאמֹֽר׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): abiynu֮ me֣t bּamּidebּar֒ veh֨u lo'-haya֜h bּet֣oke ha'eda֗h hanּo'adi֛ym 'al-yehva֖h bּa'adat-qo֑rach kּiֽy-bechete'֣o me֔t ubani֖ym lo'-ha֥yu lֽo׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"Our father died in the wilderness. He was not among Korah’s followers, who banded together against the LORD, but he died for his own sin and left no sons.

אָבִינוּ֮ מֵ֣ת בַּמִּדְבָּר֒ וְה֨וּא לֹא־הָיָ֜ה בְּת֣וֹךְ הָעֵדָ֗ה הַנּוֹעָדִ֛ים עַל־יְהוָ֖ה בַּעֲדַת־קֹ֑רַח כִּֽי־בְחֶטְא֣וֹ מֵ֔ת וּבָנִ֖ים לֹא־הָ֥יוּ לֽוֹ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): la֣mּah yigּara֤ shshem-'abi֨ynu֙ mitּ֣oke mishshepּachetּ֔o kּi֛y 'e֥yn l֖o bּe֑n tּenah-lּa֣nu 'achuzּa֔h bּet֖oke 'ache֥y 'abiֽynu׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Why should our father’s name disappear from his clan because he had no son? Give us property among our father’s relatives."

לָ֣מָּה יִגָּרַ֤ע שֵׁם־אָבִ֨ינוּ֙ מִתּ֣וֹךְ מִשְׁפַּחְתּ֔וֹ כִּ֛י אֵ֥ין ל֖וֹ בֵּ֑ן תְּנָה־לָּ֣נוּ אֲחֻזָּ֔ה בְּת֖וֹךְ אֲחֵ֥י אָבִֽינוּ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּaqere֥b moshshe֛h 'et-mishshepּata֖<seg type="x-large">n<seg> lipene֥y yehvaֽh׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)So Moses brought their case before the LORD,

וַיַּקְרֵ֥ב מֹשֶׁ֛ה אֶת־מִשְׁפָּטָ֖<seg type="x-large">ן<seg> לִפְנֵ֥י יְהוָֽה׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֥'mer yehva֖h 'el-moshshe֥h lּe'moֽr׃

Edified Edition (EDE)and the LORD said to him,

וַיֹּ֥אמֶר יְהוָ֖ה אֶל־מֹשֶׁ֥ה לֵּאמֹֽר׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): kּe֗n bּen֣ot tzelapechad֮ dּoberot֒ nato֨n tּitּe֤n lahem֙ 'achuzּa֣t nachala֔h bּet֖oke 'ache֣y 'abiyhe֑m vehaֽ'abaretּa֛ 'et-nachala֥t 'abiyhe֖n laheֽn׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"What Zelophehad’s daughters are saying is right. You must certainly give them property as an inheritance among their father’s relatives and give them their father’s inheritance.

כֵּ֗ן בְּנ֣וֹת צְלָפְחָד֮ דֹּבְרֹת֒ נָתֹ֨ן תִּתֵּ֤ן לָהֶם֙ אֲחֻזַּ֣ת נַחֲלָ֔ה בְּת֖וֹךְ אֲחֵ֣י אֲבִיהֶ֑ם וְהַֽעֲבַרְתָּ֛ אֶת־נַחֲלַ֥ת אֲבִיהֶ֖ן לָהֶֽן׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'el-bּene֥y yishsera'e֖l tּedabּe֣r le'mo֑r 'i֣yshsh kּiֽy-yam֗ut uben֙ 'e֣yn l֔o vehaֽ'abaretּe֥m 'et-nachalat֖o lebitּֽo׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"Say to the Israelites, 'If a man dies and leaves no son, give his inheritance to his daughter.

וְאֶל־בְּנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל תְּדַבֵּ֣ר לֵאמֹ֑ר אִ֣ישׁ כִּֽי־יָמ֗וּת וּבֵן֙ אֵ֣ין ל֔וֹ וְהַֽעֲבַרְתֶּ֥ם אֶת־נַחֲלָת֖וֹ לְבִתּֽוֹ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'im-'e֥yn l֖o bּa֑t unetatּe֥m 'et-nachalat֖o le'echayv׃

Edified Edition (EDE)If he has no daughter, give his inheritance to his brothers.

וְאִם־אֵ֥ין ל֖וֹ בַּ֑ת וּנְתַתֶּ֥ם אֶת־נַחֲלָת֖וֹ לְאֶחָיו׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'im-'e֥yn l֖o 'achi֑ym unetatּe֥m 'et-nachalat֖o la'ache֥y 'abiֽyv׃

Edified Edition (EDE)If he has no brothers, give his inheritance to his father’s brothers.

וְאִם־אֵ֥ין ל֖וֹ אַחִ֑ים וּנְתַתֶּ֥ם אֶת־נַחֲלָת֖וֹ לַאֲחֵ֥י אָבִֽיו׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'im-'e֣yn 'achiym֮ le'abiyv֒ unetatּe֣m 'et-nachalat֗o lishshe'er֞o haqּaro֥b 'ela֛yv mimּishshepּachetּ֖o veyara֣shsh 'ota֑hּ veֽha֨yeta֜h libene֤y yishsera'el֙ lechuqּa֣t mishshepּa֔t kּa'ashshe֛r tziua֥h yehva֖h 'et-moshsheֽh׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)If his father had no brothers, give his inheritance to the nearest relative in his clan, that he may possess it. This is to have the force of law for the Israelites, as the LORD commanded Moses.' "

וְאִם־אֵ֣ין אַחִים֮ לְאָבִיו֒ וּנְתַתֶּ֣ם אֶת־נַחֲלָת֗וֹ לִשְׁאֵר֞וֹ הַקָּרֹ֥ב אֵלָ֛יו מִמִּשְׁפַּחְתּ֖וֹ וְיָרַ֣שׁ אֹתָ֑הּ וְֽהָ֨יְתָ֜ה לִבְנֵ֤י יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ לְחֻקַּ֣ת מִשְׁפָּ֔ט כַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר צִוָּ֥ה יְהוָ֖ה אֶת־מֹשֶֽׁה׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֤'mer yehvah֙ 'el-moshshe֔h 'ale֛h 'el-ha֥r ha'abari֖ym hazּe֑h ure'eh֙ 'et-ha'a֔retz 'ashshe֥r nata֖tּiy libene֥y yishsera'eֽl׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Then the LORD said to Moses, "Go up this mountain in the Abarim range and see the land I have given the Israelites.

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר יְהוָה֙ אֶל־מֹשֶׁ֔ה עֲלֵ֛ה אֶל־הַ֥ר הָעֲבָרִ֖ים הַזֶּ֑ה וּרְאֵה֙ אֶת־הָאָ֔רֶץ אֲשֶׁ֥ר נָתַ֖תִּי לִבְנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vera'i֣ytah 'ota֔hּ vene'esapetּa֥ 'el-'amּe֖yka gּam-'a֑tּah kּa'ashshe֥r ne'esa֖p 'aharo֥n 'achiֽyka׃

Edified Edition (EDE)After you have seen it, you too will be gathered to your people, as your brother Aaron was,

וְרָאִ֣יתָה אֹתָ֔הּ וְנֶאֱסַפְתָּ֥ אֶל־עַמֶּ֖יךָ גַּם־אָ֑תָּה כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר נֶאֱסַ֖ף אַהֲרֹ֥ן אָחִֽיךָ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): kּa'ashsher֩ meriyte֨m pּi֜y bּemidebּar-tzi֗n bּimeriybat֙ hֽa'eda֔h lehaqedּiyshshe֥niy bamּa֖yim le'eyneyhe֑m he֛m meֽy-meriyba֥t qade֖shsh midebּar-tziֽn׃p

Edified Edition (EDE)for when the community rebelled at the waters in the Desert of Zin, both of you disobeyed my command to honour me as holy before their eyes." (These were the waters of Meribah Kadesh, in the Desert of Zin.)

כַּאֲשֶׁר֩ מְרִיתֶ֨ם פִּ֜י בְּמִדְבַּר־צִ֗ן בִּמְרִיבַת֙ הָֽעֵדָ֔ה לְהַקְדִּישֵׁ֥נִי בַמַּ֖יִם לְעֵינֵיהֶ֑ם הֵ֛ם מֵֽי־מְרִיבַ֥ת קָדֵ֖שׁ מִדְבַּר־צִֽן׃פ

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayedabּe֣r moshshe֔h 'el-yehva֖h le'moֽr׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Moses said to the LORD,

וַיְדַבֵּ֣ר מֹשֶׁ֔ה אֶל־יְהוָ֖ה לֵאמֹֽר׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): yipeqo֣d yehva֔h 'elohe֥y harucho֖t lekal-bּashsa֑r 'i֖yshsh 'al-ha'edaֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"May the LORD, the God who gives breath to all living things, appoint someone over this community

יִפְקֹ֣ד יְהוָ֔ה אֱלֹהֵ֥י הָרוּחֹ֖ת לְכָל־בָּשָׂ֑ר אִ֖ישׁ עַל־הָעֵדָֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ashsher-yetze֣ lipeneyhe֗m va'ashshe֤r yabo'֙ lipeneyhe֔m va'ashshe֥r yotziy'e֖m va'ashshe֣r yebiy'e֑m velo֤ tiheyeh֙ 'ada֣t yehva֔h kּatzּo֕'n 'ashshe֥r 'eyn-lahe֖m ro'eֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)to go out and come in before them, one who will lead them out and bring them in, so the LORD’s people will not be like sheep without a shepherd."

אֲשֶׁר־יֵצֵ֣א לִפְנֵיהֶ֗ם וַאֲשֶׁ֤ר יָבֹא֙ לִפְנֵיהֶ֔ם וַאֲשֶׁ֥ר יוֹצִיאֵ֖ם וַאֲשֶׁ֣ר יְבִיאֵ֑ם וְלֹ֤א תִהְיֶה֙ עֲדַ֣ת יְהוָ֔ה כַּצֹּ֕אן אֲשֶׁ֥ר אֵין־לָהֶ֖ם רֹעֶֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֨'mer yehva֜h 'el-moshshe֗h qach-leka֙ 'et-yehoshshu֣'a bּin-n֔un 'i֖yshsh 'ashsher-r֣ucha bּ֑o vesamaketּa֥ 'et-yadeka֖ 'alaֽyv׃

Edified Edition (EDE)So the LORD said to Moses, "Take Joshua son of Nun, a man in whom is the spirit of leadership, and lay your hand on him.

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר יְהוָ֜ה אֶל־מֹשֶׁ֗ה קַח־לְךָ֙ אֶת־יְהוֹשֻׁ֣עַ בִּן־נ֔וּן אִ֖ישׁ אֲשֶׁר־ר֣וּחַ בּ֑וֹ וְסָמַכְתָּ֥ אֶת־יָדְךָ֖ עָלָֽיו׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vehֽa'amadetּa֣ 'ot֗o lipeney֙ 'ele'aza֣r hakּohe֔n velipene֖y kּal-ha'eda֑h vetziuiyta֥h 'ot֖o le'eyneyheֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Have him stand before Eleazar the priest and the entire assembly and commission him in their presence.

וְהַֽעֲמַדְתָּ֣ אֹת֗וֹ לִפְנֵי֙ אֶלְעָזָ֣ר הַכֹּהֵ֔ן וְלִפְנֵ֖י כָּל־הָעֵדָ֑ה וְצִוִּיתָ֥ה אֹת֖וֹ לְעֵינֵיהֶֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): venatatּa֥h mehֽodeka֖ 'ala֑yv lema֣'an yishsheme'֔u kּal-'ada֖t bּene֥y yishsera'eֽl׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Give him some of your authority so the whole Israelite community will obey him.

וְנָתַתָּ֥ה מֵהֽוֹדְךָ֖ עָלָ֑יו לְמַ֣עַן יִשְׁמְע֔וּ כָּל־עֲדַ֖ת בְּנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): velipene֨y 'ele'aza֤r hakּohen֙ ya'amo֔d veshsha֥'al l֛o bּemishshepּa֥t ha'uri֖ym lipene֣y yehva֑h 'al-pּi֨yv yetze'֜u ve'al-pּi֣yv yabo֗'u h֛u vekal-bּeney-yishsera'e֥l 'itּ֖o vekal-ha'edaֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)He is to stand before Eleazar the priest, who will obtain decisions for him by inquiring of the Urim before the LORD. At his command he and the entire community of the Israelites will go out, and at his command they will come in."

וְלִפְנֵ֨י אֶלְעָזָ֤ר הַכֹּהֵן֙ יַעֲמֹ֔ד וְשָׁ֥אַל ל֛וֹ בְּמִשְׁפַּ֥ט הָאוּרִ֖ים לִפְנֵ֣י יְהוָ֑ה עַל־פִּ֨יו יֵצְא֜וּ וְעַל־פִּ֣יו יָבֹ֗אוּ ה֛וּא וְכָל־בְּנֵי־יִשְׂרָאֵ֥ל אִתּ֖וֹ וְכָל־הָעֵדָֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֣'ashs moshshe֔h kּa'ashshe֛r tziua֥h yehva֖h 'ot֑o vayּiqּa֣ch 'et-yehoshshu֗'a vayּaֽ'amide֨hu֙ lipeney֙ 'ele'aza֣r hakּohe֔n velipene֖y kּal-ha'edaֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Moses did as the LORD commanded him. He took Joshua and had him stand before Eleazar the priest and the whole assembly.

וַיַּ֣עַשׂ מֹשֶׁ֔ה כַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר צִוָּ֥ה יְהוָ֖ה אֹת֑וֹ וַיִּקַּ֣ח אֶת־יְהוֹשֻׁ֗עַ וַיַּֽעֲמִדֵ֨הוּ֙ לִפְנֵי֙ אֶלְעָזָ֣ר הַכֹּהֵ֔ן וְלִפְנֵ֖י כָּל־הָעֵדָֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּisemo֧ke 'et-yada֛yv 'ala֖yv vayetzaue֑hu kּa'ashshe֛r dּibּe֥r yehva֖h bּeyad-moshsheֽh׃p

Edified Edition (EDE)Then he laid his hands on him and commissioned him, as the LORD instructed through Moses.

וַיִּסְמֹ֧ךְ אֶת־יָדָ֛יו עָלָ֖יו וַיְצַוֵּ֑הוּ כַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר דִּבֶּ֥ר יְהוָ֖ה בְּיַד־מֹשֶֽׁה׃פ
