Phonetic (Hebrew): vayedabּe֥r yehva֖h 'el-moshshe֥h lּe'moֽr׃

Edified Edition (EDE)The LORD said to Moses,

וַיְדַבֵּ֥ר יְהוָ֖ה אֶל־מֹשֶׁ֥ה לֵּאמֹֽר׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): neqo֗m niqemat֙ bּene֣y yishsera'e֔l me'e֖t hamּideyani֑ym 'acha֖r tּe'ase֥p 'el-'amּeֽyka׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"Take vengeance on the Midianites for the Israelites. After that, you will be gathered to your people."

נְקֹ֗ם נִקְמַת֙ בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל מֵאֵ֖ת הַמִּדְיָנִ֑ים אַחַ֖ר תֵּאָסֵ֥ף אֶל־עַמֶּֽיךָ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayedabּe֤r moshsheh֙ 'el-ha'a֣m le'mo֔r hechaletz֧u me'itּeke֛m 'anashshi֖ym latzּaba֑ veyiheyu֙ 'al-mideya֔n late֥t niqemat-yehva֖h bּemideyaֽn׃

Edified Edition (EDE)So Moses said to the people, "Arm some of your men to go to war against the Midianites and to carry out the LORD’s vengeance on them.

וַיְדַבֵּ֤ר מֹשֶׁה֙ אֶל־הָעָ֣ם לֵאמֹ֔ר הֵחָלְצ֧וּ מֵאִתְּכֶ֛ם אֲנָשִׁ֖ים לַצָּבָ֑א וְיִהְיוּ֙ עַל־מִדְיָ֔ן לָתֵ֥ת נִקְמַת־יְהוָ֖ה בְּמִדְיָֽן׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): e֚lep lamּatּe֔h 'e֖lep lamּatּe֑h lekol֙ matּ֣ot yishsera'e֔l tּishshelech֖u latzּabaֽ'׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Send into battle a thousand men from each of the tribes of Israel."

אֶ֚לֶף לַמַּטֶּ֔ה אֶ֖לֶף לַמַּטֶּ֑ה לְכֹל֙ מַטּ֣וֹת יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל תִּשְׁלְח֖וּ לַצָּבָֽא׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּimּֽaseru֙ me'alepe֣y yishsera'e֔l 'e֖lep lamּatּe֑h shsheneym-'ashsa֥r 'e֖lep chalutze֥y tzabaֽ'׃

Edified Edition (EDE)So twelve thousand men armed for battle, a thousand from each tribe, were supplied from the clans of Israel.

וַיִּמָּֽסְרוּ֙ מֵאַלְפֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל אֶ֖לֶף לַמַּטֶּ֑ה שְׁנֵים־עָשָׂ֥ר אֶ֖לֶף חֲלוּצֵ֥י צָבָֽא׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּishshela֨ch 'ota֥m moshshe֛h 'e֥lep lamּatּe֖h latzּaba֑ 'o֠tam ve'et-pּi֨ynecha֜s bּen-'ele'aza֤r hakּohen֙ latzּaba֔ ukele֥y haqּo֛deshsh vachatzotzer֥ot hatּeru'a֖h bּeyadֽo׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Moses sent them into battle, a thousand from each tribe, together with Phinehas son of Eleazar, the priest, who took with him articles from the sanctuary and the trumpets for signalling.

וַיִּשְׁלַ֨ח אֹתָ֥ם מֹשֶׁ֛ה אֶ֥לֶף לַמַּטֶּ֖ה לַצָּבָ֑א אֹ֠תָם וְאֶת־פִּ֨ינְחָ֜ס בֶּן־אֶלְעָזָ֤ר הַכֹּהֵן֙ לַצָּבָ֔א וּכְלֵ֥י הַקֹּ֛דֶשׁ וַחֲצֹצְר֥וֹת הַתְּרוּעָ֖ה בְּיָדֽוֹ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vaֽyּitzebּe'u֙ 'al-mideya֔n kּa'ashshe֛r tziua֥h yehva֖h 'et-moshshe֑h vayּaֽhareg֖u kּal-zakaֽr׃

Edified Edition (EDE)They fought against Midian, as the LORD commanded Moses, and killed every man.

וַֽיִּצְבְּאוּ֙ עַל־מִדְיָ֔ן כַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר צִוָּ֥ה יְהוָ֖ה אֶת־מֹשֶׁ֑ה וַיַּֽהַרְג֖וּ כָּל־זָכָֽר׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'et-maleke֨y mideya֜n hareg֣u 'al-chaleleyhe֗m 'et-'evi֤y ve'et-re֨qem֙ ve'et-tz֤ur ve'et-chur֙ ve'et-re֔ba chame֖shshet maleke֣y mideya֑n ve'et֙ bּile'a֣m bּen-bּe'֔or hareg֖u bּechaֽreb׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Among their victims were Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur and Reba, the five kings of Midian. They also killed Balaam son of Beor with the sword.

וְאֶת־מַלְכֵ֨י מִדְיָ֜ן הָרְג֣וּ עַל־חַלְלֵיהֶ֗ם אֶת־אֱוִ֤י וְאֶת־רֶ֨קֶם֙ וְאֶת־צ֤וּר וְאֶת־חוּר֙ וְאֶת־רֶ֔בַע חֲמֵ֖שֶׁת מַלְכֵ֣י מִדְיָ֑ן וְאֵת֙ בִּלְעָ֣ם בֶּן־בְּע֔וֹר הָרְג֖וּ בֶּחָֽרֶב׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּishshebּ֧u beney-yishsera'e֛l 'et-neshshe֥y mideya֖n ve'et-tapּa֑m ve'e֨t kּal-bּehemetּa֧m ve'et-kּal-miqenehe֛m ve'et-kּal-cheyla֖m bּazaֽzu׃

Edified Edition (EDE)The Israelites captured the Midianite women and children and took all the Midianite herds, flocks and goods as plunder.

וַיִּשְׁבּ֧וּ בְנֵי־יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל אֶת־נְשֵׁ֥י מִדְיָ֖ן וְאֶת־טַפָּ֑ם וְאֵ֨ת כָּל־בְּהֶמְתָּ֧ם וְאֶת־כָּל־מִקְנֵהֶ֛ם וְאֶת־כָּל־חֵילָ֖ם בָּזָֽזוּ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'e֤t kּal-'areyhem֙ bּem֣oshshebota֔m ve'e֖t kּal-tiֽyrota֑m shsarep֖u bּa'eֽshsh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)They burned all the towns where the Midianites had settled, as well as all their encampments.

וְאֵ֤ת כָּל־עָרֵיהֶם֙ בְּמ֣וֹשְׁבֹתָ֔ם וְאֵ֖ת כָּל־טִֽירֹתָ֑ם שָׂרְפ֖וּ בָּאֵֽשׁ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiqechu֙ 'et-kּal-hashshּala֔l ve'e֖t kּal-hamּaleq֑ocha bּa'ada֖m ubabּehemaֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)They took all the plunder and spoils, including the people and animals,

וַיִּקְחוּ֙ אֶת־כָּל־הַשָּׁלָ֔ל וְאֵ֖ת כָּל־הַמַּלְק֑וֹחַ בָּאָדָ֖ם וּבַבְּהֵמָֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּabi֡'u 'el-moshsheh֩ ve'el-'ele'aza֨r hakּohe֜n ve'el-'ada֣t bּeneֽy-yishsera'e֗l 'et-hashshּebi֧y ve'et-hamּaleq֛ocha ve'et-hashshּala֖l 'el-haֽmּachane֑h 'el-'aֽrebo֣t mo'a֔b 'ashshe֖r 'al-yaredּe֥n yerechֽo׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)and brought the captives, spoils and plunder to Moses and Eleazar the priest and the Israelite assembly at their camp on the plains of Moab, by the Jordan across from Jericho.

וַיָּבִ֡אוּ אֶל־מֹשֶׁה֩ וְאֶל־אֶלְעָזָ֨ר הַכֹּהֵ֜ן וְאֶל־עֲדַ֣ת בְּנֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל אֶת־הַשְּׁבִ֧י וְאֶת־הַמַּלְק֛וֹחַ וְאֶת־הַשָּׁלָ֖ל אֶל־הַֽמַּחֲנֶ֑ה אֶל־עַֽרְבֹ֣ת מוֹאָ֔ב אֲשֶׁ֖ר עַל־יַרְדֵּ֥ן יְרֵחֽוֹ׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּe֨tze'֜u moshshe֨h ve'ele'aza֧r hakּohe֛n vekal-neshsiy'e֥y ha'eda֖h liqera'ta֑m 'el-mich֖utz laֽmּachaneֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Moses, Eleazar the priest and all the leaders of the community went outside the camp to meet them.

וַיֵּ֨צְא֜וּ מֹשֶׁ֨ה וְאֶלְעָזָ֧ר הַכֹּהֵ֛ן וְכָל־נְשִׂיאֵ֥י הָעֵדָ֖ה לִקְרָאתָ֑ם אֶל־מִח֖וּץ לַֽמַּחֲנֶֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiqetzo֣p moshshe֔h 'a֖l pּequde֣y hecha֑yil shsare֤y ha'alapiym֙ veshsare֣y hamּe'֔ot habּa'i֖ym mitzּeba֥ hamּilechamaֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Moses was angry with the officers of the army, the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds, who returned from the battle.

וַיִּקְצֹ֣ף מֹשֶׁ֔ה עַ֖ל פְּקוּדֵ֣י הֶחָ֑יִל שָׂרֵ֤י הָאֲלָפִים֙ וְשָׂרֵ֣י הַמֵּא֔וֹת הַבָּאִ֖ים מִצְּבָ֥א הַמִּלְחָמָֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֥'mer 'aleyhe֖m moshshe֑h haֽchiyּiyte֖m kּal-neqebaֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"Have you allowed all the women to live?" he asked them.

וַיֹּ֥אמֶר אֲלֵיהֶ֖ם מֹשֶׁ֑ה הַֽחִיִּיתֶ֖ם כָּל־נְקֵבָֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): he֣n he֜nּah hay֨u libene֤y yishsera'el֙ bּideba֣r bּile'a֔m limesar-ma֥'al bּayhva֖h 'al-dּebar-pּe'֑or vatּehi֥y hamּagּepa֖h bּa'ada֥t yehvaֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"They were the ones who followed Balaam’s advice and enticed the Israelites to be unfaithful to the LORD in the Peor incident, so that a plague struck the LORD’s people.

הֵ֣ן הֵ֜נָּה הָי֨וּ לִבְנֵ֤י יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ בִּדְבַ֣ר בִּלְעָ֔ם לִמְסָר־מַ֥עַל בַּיהוָ֖ה עַל־דְּבַר־פְּע֑וֹר וַתְּהִ֥י הַמַּגֵּפָ֖ה בַּעֲדַ֥ת יְהוָֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'atּa֕h hireg֥u kal-zaka֖r bּatּa֑p vekal-'ishshּa֗h yoda֥'at 'i֛yshsh lemishshekּa֥b zaka֖r haroֽgu׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"Now kill all the boys. And kill every woman who has slept with a man,

וְעַתָּ֕ה הִרְג֥וּ כָל־זָכָ֖ר בַּטָּ֑ף וְכָל־אִשָּׁ֗ה יֹדַ֥עַת אִ֛ישׁ לְמִשְׁכַּ֥ב זָכָ֖ר הֲרֹֽגוּ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vekol֙ hatּa֣p bּanּashshi֔ym 'ashshe֥r lo'-yade'֖u mishshekּa֣b zaka֑r hachay֖u lakeֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)but save for yourselves every girl who has never slept with a man.

וְכֹל֙ הַטַּ֣ף בַּנָּשִׁ֔ים אֲשֶׁ֥ר לֹא־יָדְע֖וּ מִשְׁכַּ֣ב זָכָ֑ר הַחֲי֖וּ לָכֶֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'atּe֗m chan֛u mich֥utz laֽmּachane֖h shshibe'a֣t yami֑ym kּol֩ hore֨g ne֜peshsh veko֣l ׀ noge֣'a bּeֽchala֗l tּiֽtechatּe'֞u bּayּ֤om hashshּeliyshshiy֙ ubayּ֣om hashshּebiy'i֔y 'atּe֖m ushshebiykeֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"Anyone who has killed someone or touched someone who was killed must stay outside the camp seven days. On the third and seventh days you must purify yourselves and your captives.

וְאַתֶּ֗ם חֲנ֛וּ מִח֥וּץ לַֽמַּחֲנֶ֖ה שִׁבְעַ֣ת יָמִ֑ים כֹּל֩ הֹרֵ֨ג נֶ֜פֶשׁ וְכֹ֣ל ׀ נֹגֵ֣עַ בֶּֽחָלָ֗ל תִּֽתְחַטְּא֞וּ בַּיּ֤וֹם הַשְּׁלִישִׁי֙ וּבַיּ֣וֹם הַשְּׁבִיעִ֔י אַתֶּ֖ם וּשְׁבִיכֶֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vekal-bּe֧ged vekal-kּeliy-'֛or vekal-ma'ashse֥h 'izּi֖ym vekal-kּeliy-'e֑tz tּitechatּaֽ'u׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)Purify every garment as well as everything made of leather, goat hair or wood."

וְכָל־בֶּ֧גֶד וְכָל־כְּלִי־ע֛וֹר וְכָל־מַעֲשֵׂ֥ה עִזִּ֖ים וְכָל־כְּלִי־עֵ֑ץ תִּתְחַטָּֽאוּ׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֨'mer 'ele'aza֤r hakּohen֙ 'el-'aneshshe֣y hatzּaba֔ habּa'i֖ym lamּilechama֑h zo֚'t chuqּa֣t hatּora֔h 'ashsher-tziua֥h yehva֖h 'et-moshsheֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Then Eleazar the priest said to the soldiers who had gone into battle, "This is the legal requirement that the LORD gave Moses:

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר אֶלְעָזָ֤ר הַכֹּהֵן֙ אֶל־אַנְשֵׁ֣י הַצָּבָ֔א הַבָּאִ֖ים לַמִּלְחָמָ֑ה זֹ֚את חֻקַּ֣ת הַתּוֹרָ֔ה אֲשֶׁר־צִוָּ֥ה יְהוָ֖ה אֶת־מֹשֶֽׁה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): a֥ke 'et-hazּaha֖b ve'et-hakּa֑sep 'eֽt-hanּecho֨shshet֙ 'et-habּareze֔l 'eֽt-habּedi֖yl ve'et-ha'opaֽret׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Gold, silver, bronze, iron, tin, lead

אַ֥ךְ אֶת־הַזָּהָ֖ב וְאֶת־הַכָּ֑סֶף אֶֽת־הַנְּחֹ֨שֶׁת֙ אֶת־הַבַּרְזֶ֔ל אֶֽת־הַבְּדִ֖יל וְאֶת־הָעֹפָֽרֶת׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): kּal-dּaba֞r 'ashsher-yabo֣ ba'e֗shsh tּa'abi֤yru ba'eshsh֙ vetahe֔r 'a֕ke bּeme֥y nidּa֖h yitechatּa֑ veko֨l 'ashshe֧r loֽ'-yabo֛ bּa'e֖shsh tּa'abi֥yru bamּaֽyim׃

Edified Edition (EDE)and anything else that can withstand fire must be put through the fire, and then it will be clean. But it must also be purified with the water of cleansing. And whatever cannot withstand fire must be put through that water.

כָּל־דָּבָ֞ר אֲשֶׁר־יָבֹ֣א בָאֵ֗שׁ תַּעֲבִ֤ירוּ בָאֵשׁ֙ וְטָהֵ֔ר אַ֕ךְ בְּמֵ֥י נִדָּ֖ה יִתְחַטָּ֑א וְכֹ֨ל אֲשֶׁ֧ר לֹֽא־יָבֹ֛א בָּאֵ֖שׁ תַּעֲבִ֥ירוּ בַמָּֽיִם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vekibּasetּe֧m bּigedeyke֛m bּayּ֥om hashshּebiy'i֖y uteharetּe֑m ve'acha֖r tּabo֥'u 'el-haֽmּachaneֽh׃p

Edified Edition (EDE)On the seventh day wash your clothes and you will be clean. Then you may come into the camp."

וְכִבַּסְתֶּ֧ם בִּגְדֵיכֶ֛ם בַּיּ֥וֹם הַשְּׁבִיעִ֖י וּטְהַרְתֶּ֑ם וְאַחַ֖ר תָּבֹ֥אוּ אֶל־הַֽמַּחֲנֶֽה׃פ

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֥'mer yehva֖h 'el-moshshe֥h lּe'moֽr׃

Edified Edition (EDE)The LORD said to Moses,

וַיֹּ֥אמֶר יְהוָ֖ה אֶל־מֹשֶׁ֥ה לֵּאמֹֽר׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): shsa֗ 'e֣t ro֤'shsh maleq֨ocha֙ hashshּebi֔y bּa'ada֖m ubabּehema֑h 'atּah֙ ve'ele'aza֣r hakּohe֔n vera'shshe֖y 'ab֥ot ha'edaֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"You and Eleazar the priest and the family heads of the community are to count all the people and animals that were captured.

שָׂ֗א אֵ֣ת רֹ֤אשׁ מַלְק֨וֹחַ֙ הַשְּׁבִ֔י בָּאָדָ֖ם וּבַבְּהֵמָ֑ה אַתָּה֙ וְאֶלְעָזָ֣ר הַכֹּהֵ֔ן וְרָאשֵׁ֖י אֲב֥וֹת הָעֵדָֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vechatzi֨yta֙ 'et-hamּaleq֔ocha bּe֚yn tּopeshse֣y hamּilechama֔h hayּotze'i֖ym latzּaba֑ ube֖yn kּal-ha'edaֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Divide the spoils equally between the soldiers who took part in the battle and the rest of the community.

וְחָצִ֨יתָ֙ אֶת־הַמַּלְק֔וֹחַ בֵּ֚ין תֹּפְשֵׂ֣י הַמִּלְחָמָ֔ה הַיֹּצְאִ֖ים לַצָּבָ֑א וּבֵ֖ין כָּל־הָעֵדָֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vaharemota֨ me֜kes laֽyhva֗h me'e֞t 'aneshshe֤y hamּilechamah֙ hayּotze'i֣ym latzּaba֔ 'echa֣d ne֔peshsh mechame֖shsh hamּe'֑ot min-ha'adam֙ umin-habּaqa֔r umin-hachamori֖ym umin-hatzּoֽ'n׃

Edified Edition (EDE)From the share belonging to the soldiers who fought in the battle, set aside as tribute for the LORD one out of every five hundred, whether people, cattle, donkeys or sheep.

וַהֲרֵמֹתָ֨ מֶ֜כֶס לַֽיהוָ֗ה מֵאֵ֞ת אַנְשֵׁ֤י הַמִּלְחָמָה֙ הַיֹּצְאִ֣ים לַצָּבָ֔א אֶחָ֣ד נֶ֔פֶשׁ מֵחֲמֵ֖שׁ הַמֵּא֑וֹת מִן־הָאָדָם֙ וּמִן־הַבָּקָ֔ר וּמִן־הַחֲמֹרִ֖ים וּמִן־הַצֹּֽאן׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): mimּaֽchatziyta֖m tּiqּa֑chu venatatּa֛h le'ele'aza֥r hakּohe֖n tּeruma֥t yehvaֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Take this tribute from their half share and give it to Eleazar the priest as the LORD’s part.

מִמַּֽחֲצִיתָ֖ם תִּקָּ֑חוּ וְנָתַתָּ֛ה לְאֶלְעָזָ֥ר הַכֹּהֵ֖ן תְּרוּמַ֥ת יְהוָֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): umimּachatzi֨t bּeneֽy-yishsera'e֜l tּiqּa֣ch ׀ 'echa֣d ׀ 'achu֣z min-hachamishshּi֗ym min-ha'ada֧m min-habּaqa֛r min-hachamori֥ym umin-hatzּo֖'n mikּal-habּehema֑h venatatּa֤h 'otam֙ laleviyּi֔m shshomere֕y mishsheme֖ret mishshekּa֥n yehvaֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)From the Israelites’ half, select one out of every fifty, whether people, cattle, donkeys, sheep or other animals. Give them to the Levites, who are responsible for the care of the LORD’s tabernacle."

וּמִמַּחֲצִ֨ת בְּנֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵ֜ל תִּקַּ֣ח ׀ אֶחָ֣ד ׀ אָחֻ֣ז מִן־הַחֲמִשִּׁ֗ים מִן־הָאָדָ֧ם מִן־הַבָּקָ֛ר מִן־הַחֲמֹרִ֥ים וּמִן־הַצֹּ֖אן מִכָּל־הַבְּהֵמָ֑ה וְנָתַתָּ֤ה אֹתָם֙ לַלְוִיִּ֔ם שֹׁמְרֵ֕י מִשְׁמֶ֖רֶת מִשְׁכַּ֥ן יְהוָֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֣'ashs moshshe֔h ve'ele'aza֖r hakּohe֑n kּa'ashshe֛r tziua֥h yehva֖h 'et-moshsheֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)So Moses and Eleazar the priest did as the LORD commanded Moses.

וַיַּ֣עַשׂ מֹשֶׁ֔ה וְאֶלְעָזָ֖ר הַכֹּהֵ֑ן כַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר צִוָּ֥ה יְהוָ֖ה אֶת־מֹשֶֽׁה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehiy֙ hamּaleq֔ocha ye֣ter habּa֔z 'ashshe֥r bּazez֖u 'a֣m hatzּaba֑ tzo֗'n shsheshsh-me'֥ot 'e֛lep veshshibe'i֥ym 'e֖lep vachameֽshshet-'alapiֽym׃

Edified Edition (EDE)The plunder remaining from the spoils that the soldiers took was 675,000 sheep,

וַיְהִי֙ הַמַּלְק֔וֹחַ יֶ֣תֶר הַבָּ֔ז אֲשֶׁ֥ר בָּזְז֖וּ עַ֣ם הַצָּבָ֑א צֹ֗אן שֵׁשׁ־מֵא֥וֹת אֶ֛לֶף וְשִׁבְעִ֥ים אֶ֖לֶף וַחֲמֵֽשֶׁת־אֲלָפִֽים׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ubaqa֕r shshena֥yim veshshibe'i֖ym 'aֽlep׃

Edified Edition (EDE)72,000 cattle,

וּבָקָ֕ר שְׁנַ֥יִם וְשִׁבְעִ֖ים אָֽלֶף׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vachamori֕ym 'echa֥d veshshishshּi֖ym 'aֽlep׃

וְנֶ֣פֶשׁ אָדָ֔ם מִן־הַ֨נָּשִׁ֔ים אֲשֶׁ֥ר לֹֽא־יָדְע֖וּ מִשְׁכַּ֣ב זָכָ֑ר כָּל־נֶ֕פֶשׁ שְׁנַ֥יִם וּשְׁלֹשִׁ֖ים אָֽלֶף׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּehiy֙ haֽmּechetza֔h che֕leq hayּotze'i֖ym bּatzּaba֑ misepּa֣r hatzּo֗'n shsheloshsh-me'֥ot 'e֨lep֙ ushsheloshshi֣ym 'e֔lep veshshibe'a֥t 'alapi֖ym vachame֥shsh me'ֽot׃

Edified Edition (EDE)The half share of those who fought in the battle was: 337,500 sheep,

וַתְּהִי֙ הַֽמֶּחֱצָ֔ה חֵ֕לֶק הַיֹּצְאִ֖ים בַּצָּבָ֑א מִסְפַּ֣ר הַצֹּ֗אן שְׁלֹשׁ־מֵא֥וֹת אֶ֨לֶף֙ וּשְׁלֹשִׁ֣ים אֶ֔לֶף וְשִׁבְעַ֥ת אֲלָפִ֖ים וַחֲמֵ֥שׁ מֵאֽוֹת׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehi֛y hamּe֥kes laֽyhva֖h min-hatzּo֑'n shshe֥shsh me'֖ot chame֥shsh veshshibe'iֽym׃

וַיְהִ֛י הַמֶּ֥כֶס לַֽיהוָ֖ה מִן־הַצֹּ֑אן שֵׁ֥שׁ מֵא֖וֹת חָמֵ֥שׁ וְשִׁבְעִֽים׃

וְהַ֨בָּקָ֔ר שִׁשָּׁ֥ה וּשְׁלֹשִׁ֖ים אָ֑לֶף וּמִכְסָ֥ם לַיהוָ֖ה שְׁנַ֥יִם וְשִׁבְעִֽים׃

וַיִּתֵּ֣ן מֹשֶׁ֗ה אֶת־מֶ֨כֶס֙ תְּרוּמַ֣ת יְהוָ֔ה לְאֶלְעָזָ֖ר הַכֹּהֵ֑ן כַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר צִוָּ֥ה יְהוָ֖ה אֶת־מֹשֶֽׁה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): umiֽmּachatzi֖yt bּene֣y yishsera'e֑l 'ashsher֙ chatza֣h moshshe֔h min-ha'anashshi֖ym hatzּobe'iֽym׃

Edified Edition (EDE)16,000 women,

וּמִֽמַּחֲצִ֖ית בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל אֲשֶׁר֙ חָצָ֣ה מֹשֶׁ֔ה מִן־הָאֲנָשִׁ֖ים הַצֹּבְאִֽים׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּehi֛y mechetza֥t ha'eda֖h min-hatzּo֑'n shsheloshsh-me'֥ot 'e֨lep֙ ushsheloshshi֣ym 'e֔lep shshibe'a֥t 'alapi֖ym vachame֥shsh me'ֽot׃

Edified Edition (EDE)of whom the tribute for the LORD was 32.

וַתְּהִ֛י מֶחֱצַ֥ת הָעֵדָ֖ה מִן־הַצֹּ֑אן שְׁלֹשׁ־מֵא֥וֹת אֶ֨לֶף֙ וּשְׁלֹשִׁ֣ים אֶ֔לֶף שִׁבְעַ֥ת אֲלָפִ֖ים וַחֲמֵ֥שׁ מֵאֽוֹת׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ubaqa֕r shshishshּa֥h ushsheloshshi֖ym 'aֽlep׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Moses gave the tribute to Eleazar the priest as the LORD’s part, as the LORD commanded Moses.

וּבָקָ֕ר שִׁשָּׁ֥ה וּשְׁלֹשִׁ֖ים אָֽלֶף׃

Edified Edition (EDE)The half share belonging to the Israelites, which Moses set aside from that of the men who fought, was:

Edified Edition (EDE)36,000 cattle,

וַיִּקַּ֨ח מֹשֶׁ֜ה מִמַּחֲצִ֣ת בְּנֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל אֶת־הָֽאָחֻז֙ אֶחָ֣ד מִן־הַחֲמִשִּׁ֔ים מִן־הָאָדָ֖ם וּמִן־הַבְּהֵמָ֑ה וַיִּתֵּ֨ן אֹתָ֜ם לַלְוִיִּ֗ם שֹֽׁמְרֵי֙ מִשְׁמֶ֨רֶת֙ מִשְׁכַּ֣ן יְהוָ֔ה כַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר צִוָּ֥ה יְהוָ֖ה אֶת־מֹשֶֽׁה׃

וַֽיִּקְרְבוּ֙ אֶל־מֹשֶׁ֔ה הַפְּקֻדִ֕ים אֲשֶׁ֖ר לְאַלְפֵ֣י הַצָּבָ֑א שָׂרֵ֥י הָאֲלָפִ֖ים וְשָׂרֵ֥י הַמֵּאֽוֹת׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּoֽ'meru֙ 'el-moshshe֔h 'abade֣yka naֽshse'֗u 'et-ro֛'shsh 'aneshshe֥y hamּilechama֖h 'ashshe֣r bּeyade֑nu velo'-nipeqa֥d mimּe֖nּu 'iֽyshsh׃

וַיֹּֽאמְרוּ֙ אֶל־מֹשֶׁ֔ה עֲבָדֶ֣יךָ נָֽשְׂא֗וּ אֶת־רֹ֛אשׁ אַנְשֵׁ֥י הַמִּלְחָמָ֖ה אֲשֶׁ֣ר בְּיָדֵ֑נוּ וְלֹא־נִפְקַ֥ד מִמֶּ֖נּוּ אִֽישׁ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vanּaqere֞b 'et-qarebּa֣n yehva֗h 'iyshsh֩ 'ashshe֨r matza֤ keliֽy-zahab֙ 'etze'ada֣h vetzami֔yd tabּa֖'at 'agi֣yl vekuma֑z lekapּe֥r 'al-napeshshote֖ynu lipene֥y yehvaֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)From the Israelites’ half, Moses selected one out of every fifty people and animals, as the LORD commanded him, and gave them to the Levites, who were responsible for the care of the LORD’s tabernacle.

וַנַּקְרֵ֞ב אֶת־קָרְבַּ֣ן יְהוָ֗ה אִישׁ֩ אֲשֶׁ֨ר מָצָ֤א כְלִֽי־זָהָב֙ אֶצְעָדָ֣ה וְצָמִ֔יד טַבַּ֖עַת עָגִ֣יל וְכוּמָ֑ז לְכַפֵּ֥ר עַל־נַפְשֹׁתֵ֖ינוּ לִפְנֵ֥י יְהוָֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiqּa֨ch moshshe֜h ve'ele'aza֧r hakּohe֛n 'et-hazּaha֖b meֽ'itּa֑m kּo֖l kּeli֥y ma'ashseֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Then the officers who were over the units of the army, the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds, went to Moses

וַיִּקַּ֨ח מֹשֶׁ֜ה וְאֶלְעָזָ֧ר הַכֹּהֵ֛ן אֶת־הַזָּהָ֖ב מֵֽאִתָּ֑ם כֹּ֖ל כְּלִ֥י מַעֲשֶֽׂה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehi֣y ׀ kּal-zeha֣b hatּeruma֗h 'ashshe֤r heri֨ymu֙ laֽyhva֔h shshishshּa֨h 'ashsa֥r 'e֛lep shsheba'-me'֥ot vachamishshּi֖ym shsha֑qel me'et֙ shsare֣y hֽa'alapi֔ym ume'e֖t shsare֥y hamּe'ֽot׃

Edified Edition (EDE)and said to him, "Your servants have counted the soldiers under our command, and not one is missing.

וַיְהִ֣י ׀ כָּל־זְהַ֣ב הַתְּרוּמָ֗ה אֲשֶׁ֤ר הֵרִ֨ימוּ֙ לַֽיהוָ֔ה שִׁשָּׁ֨ה עָשָׂ֥ר אֶ֛לֶף שְׁבַע־מֵא֥וֹת וַחֲמִשִּׁ֖ים שָׁ֑קֶל מֵאֵת֙ שָׂרֵ֣י הָֽאֲלָפִ֔ים וּמֵאֵ֖ת שָׂרֵ֥י הַמֵּאֽוֹת׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): aneshshey֙ hatzּaba֔ bּazez֖u 'i֥yshsh lֽo׃

Edified Edition (EDE)So we have brought as an offering to the LORD the gold articles each of us acquired, armlets, bracelets, signet rings, earrings and necklaces, to make atonement for ourselves before the LORD."

אַנְשֵׁי֙ הַצָּבָ֔א בָּזְז֖וּ אִ֥ישׁ לֽוֹ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiqּa֨ch moshshe֜h ve'ele'aza֤r hakּohen֙ 'et-hazּaha֔b me'e֛t shsare֥y ha'alapi֖ym vehamּe'֑ot vayּabi֤'u 'oto֙ 'el-'o֣hel mo'e֔d zikּar֥on libeneֽy-yishsera'e֖l lipene֥y yehvaֽh׃p

Edified Edition (EDE)Moses and Eleazar the priest accepted from them the gold, all the crafted articles. They presented it as a gift to the LORD, weighing 16,750 shekels, brought into the Tent of Meeting as a memorial for the Israelites before the LORD.

וַיִּקַּ֨ח מֹשֶׁ֜ה וְאֶלְעָזָ֤ר הַכֹּהֵן֙ אֶת־הַזָּהָ֔ב מֵאֵ֛ת שָׂרֵ֥י הָאֲלָפִ֖ים וְהַמֵּא֑וֹת וַיָּבִ֤אוּ אֹתוֹ֙ אֶל־אֹ֣הֶל מוֹעֵ֔ד זִכָּר֥וֹן לִבְנֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל לִפְנֵ֥י יְהוָֽה׃פ
