Chapter 36

Phonetic (Hebrew): vaֽyּiqereb֞u ra'shshe֣y haֽ'ab֗ot lemishshepּa֤chat bּeneֽy-gile'ad֙ bּen-maki֣yr bּen-menashshּe֔h miֽmּishshepּecho֖t bּene֣y yose֑p vaֽyedabּer֞u lipene֤y moshsheh֙ velipene֣y hanּeshsi'i֔ym ra'shshe֥y 'ab֖ot libene֥y yishsera'eֽl׃

Edified Edition (EDE)The family heads of the clan of Gilead son of Makir, the son of Manasseh, who were from the clans of the descendants of Joseph, came and spoke before Moses and the leaders, the heads of the Israelite families.

וַֽיִּקְרְב֞וּ רָאשֵׁ֣י הָֽאָב֗וֹת לְמִשְׁפַּ֤חַת בְּנֵֽי־גִלְעָד֙ בֶּן־מָכִ֣יר בֶּן־מְנַשֶּׁ֔ה מִֽמִּשְׁפְּחֹ֖ת בְּנֵ֣י יוֹסֵ֑ף וַֽיְדַבְּר֞וּ לִפְנֵ֤י מֹשֶׁה֙ וְלִפְנֵ֣י הַנְּשִׂאִ֔ים רָאשֵׁ֥י אָב֖וֹת לִבְנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo'mer֗u 'et-'adoniy֙ tziua֣h yehva֔h late֨t 'et-ha'a֧retz bּenachala֛h bּegora֖l libene֣y yishsera'e֑l vaֽ'doniy֙ tzua֣h baֽyhva֔h late֗t 'eֽt-nachala֛t tzelapecha֥d 'achi֖ynu libenotaֽyv׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"When the LORD commanded my lord to give the land as an inheritance to the Israelites by lot, he ordered you to give the inheritance of our brother Zelophehad to his daughters.

וַיֹּאמְר֗וּ אֶת־אֲדֹנִי֙ צִוָּ֣ה יְהוָ֔ה לָתֵ֨ת אֶת־הָאָ֧רֶץ בְּנַחֲלָ֛ה בְּגוֹרָ֖ל לִבְנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וַֽאדֹנִי֙ צֻוָּ֣ה בַֽיהוָ֔ה לָתֵ֗ת אֶֽת־נַחֲלַ֛ת צְלָפְחָ֥ד אָחִ֖ינוּ לִבְנֹתָֽיו׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve֠hayu le'echa֞d mibּene֨y shshibete֥y beneֽy-yishsera'el֮ lenashshiym֒ venigere'a֤h nachalatan֙ minּachala֣t 'abote֔ynu venosa֕p 'a֚l nachala֣t hamּatּe֔h 'ashshe֥r tּiheye֖ynah lahe֑m umigּora֥l nachalate֖nu yigּareֽ'a׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Now suppose they marry men from other Israelite tribes; then their inheritance will be taken from our ancestral inheritance and added to that of the tribe they marry into. And so part of the inheritance allotted to us will be taken away.

וְ֠הָיוּ לְאֶחָ֞ד מִבְּנֵ֨י שִׁבְטֵ֥י בְנֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵל֮ לְנָשִׁים֒ וְנִגְרְעָ֤ה נַחֲלָתָן֙ מִנַּחֲלַ֣ת אֲבֹתֵ֔ינוּ וְנוֹסַ֕ף עַ֚ל נַחֲלַ֣ת הַמַּטֶּ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר תִּהְיֶ֖ינָה לָהֶ֑ם וּמִגֹּרַ֥ל נַחֲלָתֵ֖נוּ יִגָּרֵֽעַ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'im-yiheye֣h hayּobel֮ libene֣y yishsera'el֒ venֽosepah֙ nachalata֔n 'a֚l nachala֣t hamּatּe֔h 'ashshe֥r tּiheye֖ynah lahe֑m umiֽnּachalat֙ matּe֣h 'abote֔ynu yigּara֖ nachalataֽn׃

Edified Edition (EDE)When the Year of Jubilee for the Israelites comes, their inheritance will be added to that of the tribe into which they marry, and their property will be taken from the inheritance of our ancestral tribe."

וְאִם־יִהְיֶ֣ה הַיֹּבֵל֮ לִבְנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵל֒ וְנֽוֹסְפָה֙ נַחֲלָתָ֔ן עַ֚ל נַחֲלַ֣ת הַמַּטֶּ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר תִּהְיֶ֖ינָה לָהֶ֑ם וּמִֽנַּחֲלַת֙ מַטֵּ֣ה אֲבֹתֵ֔ינוּ יִגָּרַ֖ע נַחֲלָתָֽן׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayetza֤v moshsheh֙ 'et-bּene֣y yishsera'e֔l 'al-pּi֥y yehva֖h le'mo֑r kּe֛n matּe֥h beneֽy-yose֖p dּoberiֽym׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Then at the LORD’s command Moses gave this order to the Israelites: "What the tribe of the descendants of Joseph is saying is right.

וַיְצַ֤ו מֹשֶׁה֙ אֶת־בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל עַל־פִּ֥י יְהוָ֖ה לֵאמֹ֑ר כֵּ֛ן מַטֵּ֥ה בְנֵֽי־יוֹסֵ֖ף דֹּבְרִֽים׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ze֣h hadּaba֞r 'ashsher-tziua֣h yehva֗h liben֤ot tzelapechad֙ le'mo֔r latּ֥ob bּe'eyneyhe֖m tּiheye֣ynah lenashshi֑ym 'a֗ke lemishshepּa֛chat matּe֥h 'abiyhe֖m tּiheye֥ynah lenashshiֽym׃

Edified Edition (EDE)This is what the LORD commands for Zelophehad’s daughters: They may marry anyone they please as long as they marry within their own ancestral tribal clan.

זֶ֣ה הַדָּבָ֞ר אֲשֶׁר־צִוָּ֣ה יְהוָ֗ה לִבְנ֤וֹת צְלָפְחָד֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר לַטּ֥וֹב בְּעֵינֵיהֶ֖ם תִּהְיֶ֣ינָה לְנָשִׁ֑ים אַ֗ךְ לְמִשְׁפַּ֛חַת מַטֵּ֥ה אֲבִיהֶ֖ם תִּהְיֶ֥ינָה לְנָשִֽׁים׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): veloֽ'-tisּo֤b nachalah֙ libene֣y yishsera'e֔l mimּatּe֖h 'el-matּe֑h kּi֣y 'i֗yshsh bּenachalat֙ matּe֣h 'abota֔yv yidebּeq֖u bּene֥y yishsera'eֽl׃

Edified Edition (EDE)No inheritance in Israel is to pass from tribe to tribe, for every Israelite shall keep the tribal inheritance of their ancestors.

וְלֹֽא־תִסֹּ֤ב נַחֲלָה֙ לִבְנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל מִמַּטֶּ֖ה אֶל־מַטֶּ֑ה כִּ֣י אִ֗ישׁ בְּנַחֲלַת֙ מַטֵּ֣ה אֲבֹתָ֔יו יִדְבְּק֖וּ בְּנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vekal-bּa֞t yore֣shshet nachala֗h mimּatּot֮ bּene֣y yishsera'el֒ le'echa֗d mimּishshepּa֛chat matּe֥h 'abi֖yha tּiheye֣h le'ishshּa֑h lema֗'an yiֽyreshshu֙ bּene֣y yishsera'e֔l 'i֖yshsh nachala֥t 'abotaֽyv׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Every daughter who inherits land in any Israelite tribe must marry someone in her ancestral tribal clan, so that every Israelite will possess the inheritance of their ancestors.

וְכָל־בַּ֞ת יֹרֶ֣שֶׁת נַחֲלָ֗ה מִמַּטּוֹת֮ בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵל֒ לְאֶחָ֗ד מִמִּשְׁפַּ֛חַת מַטֵּ֥ה אָבִ֖יהָ תִּהְיֶ֣ה לְאִשָּׁ֑ה לְמַ֗עַן יִֽירְשׁוּ֙ בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל אִ֖ישׁ נַחֲלַ֥ת אֲבֹתָֽיו׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): veloֽ'-tisּo֧b nachala֛h mimּatּe֖h lematּe֣h 'ache֑r kּiy-'iyshsh֙ bּena֣chalat֔o yidebּeq֕u matּ֖ot bּene֥y yishsera'eֽl׃

Edified Edition (EDE)No inheritance may pass from one tribe to another, for every Israelite tribe is to keep its own land."

וְלֹֽא־תִסֹּ֧ב נַחֲלָ֛ה מִמַּטֶּ֖ה לְמַטֶּ֣ה אַחֵ֑ר כִּי־אִישׁ֙ בְּנַ֣חֲלָת֔וֹ יִדְבְּק֕וּ מַטּ֖וֹת בְּנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): kּa'ashshe֛r tziua֥h yehva֖h 'et-moshshe֑h kּe֥n 'ashs֖u bּen֥ot tzelapechaֽd׃

Edified Edition (EDE)So Zelophehad’s daughters did as the LORD commanded Moses.

כַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר צִוָּ֥ה יְהוָ֖ה אֶת־מֹשֶׁ֑ה כֵּ֥ן עָשׂ֖וּ בְּנ֥וֹת צְלָפְחָֽד׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּiheye֜ynah machela֣h tiretza֗h vechagela֧h umilekּa֛h veno'a֖h bּen֣ot tzelapecha֑d libene֥y dodeyhe֖n lenashshiֽym׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Zelophehad’s daughters, Mahlah, Tirzah, Hoglah, Milkah and Noah, married their cousins on their father’s side.

וַתִּהְיֶ֜ינָה מַחְלָ֣ה תִרְצָ֗ה וְחָגְלָ֧ה וּמִלְכָּ֛ה וְנֹעָ֖ה בְּנ֣וֹת צְלָפְחָ֑ד לִבְנֵ֥י דֹדֵיהֶ֖ן לְנָשִֽׁים׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): miֽmּishshepּecho֛t bּeneֽy-menashshּe֥h ben-yose֖p hay֣u lenashshi֑ym vatּehiy֙ nachalata֔n 'al-matּe֖h mishshepּa֥chat 'abiyheֽn׃

Edified Edition (EDE)They married within the clans of the descendants of Manasseh son of Joseph, and their inheritance remained in their father’s clan and tribe.

מִֽמִּשְׁפְּחֹ֛ת בְּנֵֽי־מְנַשֶּׁ֥ה בֶן־יוֹסֵ֖ף הָי֣וּ לְנָשִׁ֑ים וַתְּהִי֙ נַחֲלָתָ֔ן עַל־מַטֵּ֖ה מִשְׁפַּ֥חַת אֲבִיהֶֽן׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): e֣lּeh hamּitzevo֞t vehamּishshepּati֗ym 'ashshe֨r tziua֧h yehva֛h bּeyad-moshshe֖h 'el-bּene֣y yishsera'e֑l bּe'aֽrebo֣t mo'a֔b 'a֖l yaredּe֥n yerechֽo׃

Edified Edition (EDE)These are the commands and regulations the LORD gave through Moses to the Israelites on the plains of Moab by the Jordan across from Jericho.

אֵ֣לֶּה הַמִּצְוֺ֞ת וְהַמִּשְׁפָּטִ֗ים אֲשֶׁ֨ר צִוָּ֧ה יְהוָ֛ה בְּיַד־מֹשֶׁ֖ה אֶל־בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל בְּעַֽרְבֹ֣ת מוֹאָ֔ב עַ֖ל יַרְדֵּ֥ן יְרֵחֽוֹ׃
