Chapter 17
1
Phonetic (Hebrew): t֤ob pּa֣t cha֭rebah veshshalevah-ba֑hּ mi֝bּa֗yit male֥ zibechey-riֽyb׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Better is a dry morsel and quietness therewith, than an house full of sacrifices with strife.

ט֤וֹב פַּ֣ת חֲ֭רֵבָה וְשַׁלְוָה־בָ֑הּ מִ֝בַּ֗יִת מָלֵ֥א זִבְחֵי־רִֽיב׃

2
Phonetic (Hebrew): eֽbed-mashsekּi֗yl yi֭meshshol bּebe֣n mebi֑yshsh ubet֥oke 'a֝chi֗ym yachalo֥q nachalaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)A wise servant shall have rule over a son that causes shame, and shall have part of the inheritance among the brothers.

עֶֽבֶד־מַשְׂכִּ֗יל יִ֭מְשֹׁל בְּבֵ֣ן מֵבִ֑ישׁ וּבְת֥וֹךְ אַ֝חִ֗ים יַחֲלֹ֥ק נַחֲלָֽה׃

3
Phonetic (Hebrew): matzere֣p la֭kּesep vek֣ur lazּaha֑b uboche֖n libּ֣ot yehvaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The fining pot is for silver, and the furnace for gold: but the LORD tries the hearts.

מַצְרֵ֣ף לַ֭כֶּסֶף וְכ֣וּר לַזָּהָ֑ב וּבֹחֵ֖ן לִבּ֣וֹת יְהוָֽה׃

4
Phonetic (Hebrew): me֭ra maqeshshi֣yb 'al-shsepat-'a֑ven shshe֥qer me֝ziyn 'al-leshsh֥on hauoֽt׃
Edified Edition (EDE)A wicked doer gives heed to false lips; and a liar gives ear to a naughty tongue.

מֵ֭רַע מַקְשִׁ֣יב עַל־שְׂפַת־אָ֑וֶן שֶׁ֥קֶר מֵ֝זִין עַל־לְשׁ֥וֹן הַוֺּֽת׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): lo'e֣g la֭rashsh chere֣p 'oshse֑hu shsame֥cha le֝'e֗yd lo֣ yinּaqeֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Whoever mocks the poor reproaches his Maker: and he that is glad at calamities shall not be unpunished.

לֹעֵ֣ג לָ֭רָשׁ חֵרֵ֣ף עֹשֵׂ֑הוּ שָׂמֵ֥חַ לְ֝אֵ֗יד לֹ֣א יִנָּקֶֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ate֣ret ze֭qeniym bּene֣y bani֑ym vetipe'e֖ret bּani֣ym 'abotaֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Children's children are the crown of old men; and the glory of children are their fathers.

עֲטֶ֣רֶת זְ֭קֵנִים בְּנֵ֣י בָנִ֑ים וְתִפְאֶ֖רֶת בָּנִ֣ים אֲבוֹתָֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): lo'-na'va֣h lenaba֣l shsepat-ye֑ter 'a֝֗p kּiֽy-lenadi֥yb shsepat-shshaֽqer׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Excellent speech becomes not a fool: much less do lying lips a prince.

לֹא־נָאוָ֣ה לְנָבָ֣ל שְׂפַת־יֶ֑תֶר אַ֝֗ף כִּֽי־לְנָדִ֥יב שְׂפַת־שָֽׁקֶר׃

8
Phonetic (Hebrew): eֽben-che֣n ha֭shshּochad bּe'eyne֣y be'ala֑yv 'eֽl-kּal-'ashshe֖r yipene֣h yashsekּiֽyl׃
Edified Edition (EDE)A gift is as a precious stone in the eyes of him that has it: wherever it turns, it prospers.

אֶֽבֶן־חֵ֣ן הַ֭שֹּׁחַד בְּעֵינֵ֣י בְעָלָ֑יו אֶֽל־כָּל־אֲשֶׁ֖ר יִפְנֶ֣ה יַשְׂכִּֽיל׃

9
Phonetic (Hebrew): meֽkasּeh-pּe֭shsha mebaqּe֣shsh 'ahaba֑h veshshone֥h be֝daba֗r maperi֥yd 'alּֽup׃
Edified Edition (EDE)He that covers a transgression seeks love; but he that repeats a matter separates chief friends.

מְֽכַסֶּה־פֶּ֭שַׁע מְבַקֵּ֣שׁ אַהֲבָ֑ה וְשֹׁנֶ֥ה בְ֝דָבָ֗ר מַפְרִ֥יד אַלּֽוּף׃

10
Phonetic (Hebrew): tּe֣chat gּe'ara֣h bemebi֑yn mehakּ֖ot kּesi֣yl me'aֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)A reproof enters more into a wise man than an hundred stripes into a fool.

תֵּ֣חַת גְּעָרָ֣ה בְמֵבִ֑ין מֵהַכּ֖וֹת כְּסִ֣יל מֵאָֽה׃

11
Phonetic (Hebrew): ake-meri֥y yebaqּeshsh-ra֑ umale'a֥ke 'a֝kezari֗y yeshshulּach-bּֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)An evil man seeks only rebellion: therefore a cruel messenger shall be sent against him.

אַךְ־מְרִ֥י יְבַקֶּשׁ־רָ֑ע וּמַלְאָ֥ךְ אַ֝כְזָרִ֗י יְשֻׁלַּח־בּֽוֹ׃

12
Phonetic (Hebrew): pּag֬oshsh dּo֣b shshakּ֣ul bּe'i֑yshsh ve'al-kּe֝si֗yl bּe'iualetּֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Let a bear robbed of her whelps meet a man, rather than a fool in his folly.

פָּג֬וֹשׁ דֹּ֣ב שַׁכּ֣וּל בְּאִ֑ישׁ וְאַל־כְּ֝סִ֗יל בְּאִוַּלְתּֽוֹ׃

13
Phonetic (Hebrew): meshshi֣yb ra֭'ah tּa֣chat toba֑h lo'-tmysh tam֥ushsh ra֝'a֗h mibּeytֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Whoever rewards evil for good, evil shall not depart from his house.

מֵשִׁ֣יב רָ֭עָה תַּ֣חַת טוֹבָ֑ה לֹא־תמיש תָמ֥וּשׁ רָ֝עָ֗ה מִבֵּיתֽוֹ׃

14
Phonetic (Hebrew): pּ֣oteֽr ma֭yim re'shshi֣yt mad֑on velipene֥y hi֝tegּalּa֗ hari֥yb netֽoshsh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The beginning of strife is as when one lets out water: therefore leave off contention before it be meddled with.

פּ֣וֹטֵֽר מַ֭יִם רֵאשִׁ֣ית מָד֑וֹן וְלִפְנֵ֥י הִ֝תְגַּלַּ֗ע הָרִ֥יב נְטֽוֹשׁ׃

15
Phonetic (Hebrew): matzedּi֣yq ra֭shsha umareshshi֣y'a tzadּi֑yq tּo'aba֥t ye֝hva֗h gּam-shsheneyheֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)He that justifies the wicked, and he that condemns the just, even they both are abomination to the LORD.

מַצְדִּ֣יק רָ֭שָׁע וּמַרְשִׁ֣יעַ צַדִּ֑יק תּוֹעֲבַ֥ת יְ֝הוָ֗ה גַּם־שְׁנֵיהֶֽם׃

16
Phonetic (Hebrew): lamּah-zּe֣h mechi֣yr bּeyad-kּesi֑yl liqen֖ot chakema֣h veleb-'aֽyin׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Why is there a price in the hand of a fool to get wisdom, seeing he has no heart for it?

לָמָּה־זֶּ֣ה מְחִ֣יר בְּיַד־כְּסִ֑יל לִקְנ֖וֹת חָכְמָ֣ה וְלֶב־אָֽיִן׃

17
Phonetic (Hebrew): bּekal-'e֭t 'ohe֣b hare֑'a ve'a֥ch le֝tzara֗h yiualeֽd׃
Edified Edition (EDE)A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.

בְּכָל־עֵ֭ת אֹהֵ֣ב הָרֵ֑עַ וְאָ֥ח לְ֝צָרָ֗ה יִוָּלֵֽד׃

18
Phonetic (Hebrew): ada֣m chasar-le֭b tּoqe֣'a kּa֑p 'ore֥b 'a֝rubּa֗h lipene֥y re'eֽhu׃
Edified Edition (EDE)A man void of understanding strikes hands, and becomes surety in the presence of his friend.

אָדָ֣ם חֲסַר־לֵ֭ב תּוֹקֵ֣עַ כָּ֑ף עֹרֵ֥ב עֲ֝רֻבָּ֗ה לִפְנֵ֥י רֵעֵֽהוּ׃

19
Phonetic (Hebrew): o֣heֽb pּe֭shsha 'ohe֣b matzּa֑h magebּi֥yhּa pּi֝tech֗o mebaqּeshsh-shshaֽber׃
Edified Edition (EDE)He loves transgression that loves strife: and he that exalts his gate seeks destruction.

אֹ֣הֵֽב פֶּ֭שַׁע אֹהֵ֣ב מַצָּ֑ה מַגְבִּ֥יהַּ פִּ֝תְח֗וֹ מְבַקֶּשׁ־שָֽׁבֶר׃

20
Phonetic (Hebrew): iqּeshsh-le֭b lo֣ yimetza'-t֑ob venehepּa֥ke bּi֝leshshon֗o yipּ֥ol bּera'aֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)He that has a perverse heart finds no good: and he that has a perverse tongue falls into mischief.

עִקֶּשׁ־לֵ֭ב לֹ֣א יִמְצָא־ט֑וֹב וְנֶהְפָּ֥ךְ בִּ֝לְשׁוֹנ֗וֹ יִפּ֥וֹל בְּרָעָֽה׃

21
Phonetic (Hebrew): yole֣d kּe֭siyl let֣ugah l֑o veloֽ'-yi֝shsema֗ch 'abi֣y nabaֽl׃
Edified Edition (EDE)He that begets a fool does it to his sorrow: and the father of a fool has no joy.

יֹלֵ֣ד כְּ֭סִיל לְת֣וּגָה ל֑וֹ וְלֹֽא־יִ֝שְׂמַ֗ח אֲבִ֣י נָבָֽל׃

22
Phonetic (Hebrew): le֣b shsa֭mecha yeyti֣b gּeha֑h ver֥ucha ne֝ke'a֗h tּeyabּeshsh-gּaֽrem׃
Edified Edition (EDE)A merry heart does good like a medicine: but a broken spirit dries the bones.

לֵ֣ב שָׂ֭מֵחַ יֵיטִ֣ב גֵּהָ֑ה וְר֥וּחַ נְ֝כֵאָ֗ה תְּיַבֶּשׁ־גָּֽרֶם׃

23
Phonetic (Hebrew): shsho֣chad me֭cheyq rashsha֣ yiqּa֑ch le֝hatּ֗ot 'arech֥ot mishshepּaֽt׃
Edified Edition (EDE)A wicked man takes a gift out of the bosom to pervert the ways of judgement.

שֹׁ֣חַד מֵ֭חֵיק רָשָׁ֣ע יִקָּ֑ח לְ֝הַטּ֗וֹת אָרְח֥וֹת מִשְׁפָּֽט׃

24
Phonetic (Hebrew): et-pּene֣y mebi֣yn chakema֑h ve'eyne֥y ke֝si֗yl bּiqetzeh-'aֽretz׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Wisdom is before him that has understanding; but the eyes of a fool are in the ends of the earth.

אֶת־פְּנֵ֣י מֵבִ֣ין חָכְמָ֑ה וְעֵינֵ֥י כְ֝סִ֗יל בִּקְצֵה־אָֽרֶץ׃

25
Phonetic (Hebrew): kּa֣'as le֭'abiyv bּe֣n kּesi֑yl u֝me֗mer leyoladetּֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)A foolish son is a grief to his father, and bitterness to her that bare him.

כַּ֣עַס לְ֭אָבִיו בֵּ֣ן כְּסִ֑יל וּ֝מֶ֗מֶר לְיוֹלַדְתּֽוֹ׃

26
Phonetic (Hebrew): gּa֤m 'an֣oshsh latzּadּi֣yq lo'-t֑ob lehakּ֖ot nediybi֣ym 'al-yoֽshsher׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Also to punish the just is not good, nor to strike princes for equity.

גַּ֤ם עֲנ֣וֹשׁ לַצַּדִּ֣יק לֹא־ט֑וֹב לְהַכּ֖וֹת נְדִיבִ֣ים עַל־יֹֽשֶׁר׃

27
Phonetic (Hebrew): choshse֣ke 'a֭marayv yode֣'a dּa֑'at vqr yeqar-r֝֗ucha 'i֣yshsh tּebunaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)He that has knowledge spares his words: and a man of understanding is of an excellent spirit.

חוֹשֵׂ֣ךְ אֲ֭מָרָיו יוֹדֵ֣עַ דָּ֑עַת וקר יְקַר־ר֝֗וּחַ אִ֣ישׁ תְּבוּנָֽה׃

28
Phonetic (Hebrew): gּa֤m 'evi֣yl ma֭chariyshsh chaka֣m yechashshe֑b 'ote֖m shsepata֣yv nabֽon׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Even a fool, when he holds his peace, is counted wise: and he that shuts his lips is esteemed a man of understanding.

גַּ֤ם אֱוִ֣יל מַ֭חֲרִישׁ חָכָ֣ם יֵחָשֵׁ֑ב אֹטֵ֖ם שְׂפָתָ֣יו נָבֽוֹן׃
